The nightfall was quiet around the village. A reflection of the unfortunate event upheld tonight. A large group walked in unison towards the same path; a somber veil shrouded their demeanors.
Even though Meteria usually spent her entire stay in the village mostly secluded in her house. A precaution with her pregnancy as her illness deteriorated her health as time passed. But on the rare occasion where she left the comfort zone; being accompanied by someone of course (Mostly her sister.); she left a good impression on the peasants.
Her kind and pure nature mesmerized those who interacted with the young woman. Always being polite and considerate, patient and playful with the children, sporting a smile whatever may happen. All in all being the person she always was, she became known around the settlement as a delicate and gentle snowflake. One that made her way into the heart of those she conversed with, touching them with her pure soul.
So it was no surprise the entire village mourned her tragic passing. Even those that had short interactions with the woman grieved her death, going as well to pay their respects.
Reaching a clearing at the top of the hill some distance away from the village proper, their sights were greeted by a wooden structure. A pyre; an old cremation custom that Zeus and Hera implemented in their Familias. Since their foundation, it was the norm whenever a child of either of them ascended to heaven, and today was no exception.
The structure consisted of wooden logs, organized in a square format. They mounted on top of one another, serving as fuel for the ritual. On top of it layed Meteria´s body, suspended just above the logs by a quadruped structure made of robust sticks. Her lifeless form was enveloped by a white cloth, only her head was left exposed. In her closed eyes, two coins were placed, one for each eye. A token for Charon, Hades boatman.
It was more out of tradition than anything else, seeing as Hera already guaranteed that her child's soul reached the heavens safely on her passing.
Around the pyre stood her family, a somber air permeated between them as none uttered a word. They silently awaited the arrival of the folk that sought to honor her image. Little by little, the villagers gathered around the funeral structure. After the last person settled themselves Zeus lit the torch in his hand, passing it to his spouse. She will do the honors and start the cremation; Meteria was her favorite child after all.
The god looked at the Incarnation of Talent. Her mismatched eyes were slit, gazing intently at the corpse of her sister. In her current state of mind, he doubted she would protest her goddess to be the one to do the ritual. Zeus had not missed how the elf stood beside her with Bell in his arms; stealing concerned glances at the last member of Hera´s Familia.
A deafening silence filled the ambience as Hera walked towards the pyre. The crunch of dirt under her steps was the only sound that was heard as she approached the wooden structure. Her movements ceased beside the improvised altar. She seemed to hesitate for a few seconds, giving her beloved child one last goodbye. Hera´s heart ached seeing her lifeless form; she stood in place, her limbs as heavy as adamantine.
After half a minute of internal conflict, she snapped herself out of it. Meteria wouldn't want me to be like this, oh my precious child…
'Goodbye Meteria…''
With newfound resolve, the goddess started to set the base of the pyre alight. Trailing around the log structure, she lit it up whole. The oil used as fuel quickly spread the fire, growing in size by the seconds. Soon, the flames catched up to the woman's body, engulfing it in his orange light. Everyone watched with quiet respect as the body slowly burned.
'Ashes to ashes', Zeus reflected solemnly, seeing Hera trying to keep her sadness at bay. And doing a good job at it, as tears streamed down her cheeks freely, although the ghost of a smile adorned her lips as she thought about the memories she shared with her child. Alfia still remained with her stoic expression, not demonstrating any emotion. She looked like a statue with her arms crossed, a very menacing statue.
Luke was torn between paying it´s respects to Meteria and worrying about her sister. He didn't like it one bit how tense and stiff she was; it was subtle but he heard the sound of the bones in her hands cracking from how much she was clenching them.
He felt a presence beside him. Looking at who it was, the form of his hulking teacher filled his vision. The man placed a hand on his shoulder, giving a reassuring squeeze. The adventurer´s gaze was comforting and supportive; they shared a knowing look between them before focusing back on the funeral.
As an hour had passed, the peasants were slowly starting to head back to their homes, having already paid their respects. By the next hour only a handful had remained, including the kind village elder. At the time the flames dwindled and Meteria became ashes in the wind, the ambers being the single vestige of the cremation that took place; only the deceased family remained.
The deities started to make their way home once the ritual was complete. Not speaking a word, as none was needed. The Master and Apprentice duo soon followed after them; yet a single person kept her feet firmly in place. A fact that didn't escape the elf as he stopped in his tracks, awaiting for Alfia´s move. Upon seeing she wasn't going to come, his gaze fell on his tutor who was patiently observing his actions. Zald gave the kid a resolute nod before gently taking the baby from him, turning his back and heading the path towards the shack.
Being left alone with the grieving woman; Luke calmly walked beside her, placing his hands in his trousers pockets and waited silently.
Darkness filled her mind. A dark abyss with no end, obscuring all the light and engulfing her world in shadows. She felt numb staring straight ahead, seeing the ashes of her dear sister.
Why?
Why did her sister have to leave her alone?
The person she valued above everyone else, anyone else, even herself in this gods forsaken world. Her stealing her sister's talent and vitality in their birth wasn´t enough for fate it seemed.
No
She had to watch as her sister´s life was mown day after day by their accursed disease; unable to do anything for her besides being there for her. She never forgave herself for dooming her sister to a life of frailty, never being able to freely walk and explore the world, chase her dreams.
No
Instead, Meteria had to spend her days sheltered, always under care because of her weak body. Meanwhile, she had become the strongest mage of Orario and one of the mightiest adventurers, only bested by her former captain and Zeus counterpart; although not by much despite the level disparity.
Truly, fate had not been kind to her.
Then, there was that man. The filthy, cowardly supporter that defielied her sister. The bastard that laid his dirty hands on Meteria, impregnating her and ultimately resulting in her death; she really should have just killed him when he and Zeus were caught spying on Meteria and herself.
Her sister always defended him whenever she brought him into the conversation, saying he was a good man that would do her no harm. Upon her insistence, Alfia ultimately let it be just water under the bridge, sparing his life in the process. Although, if she had knowledge about what he did afterwards… The Silence would bring down the whole Zeus Familia in her wrath.
To make matters worse; her son, Bell, inherited his father's eyes. Those disgusting red irises, that would always remember her of that bastard.
Meteria, her beloved sister, who despite everything she bore through her life, still had a pure heart. Always being the naíve and kind woman who saw good in everyone, even in the worthless scum that plagued society. A treasure that Alfia guarded close to her heart. Her sole purpose and motivation to keep going.
Gone.
As an emotional turmoil plagued her mind, a figure approached her.
''Lady Alfia…'' Luke said calmly. No response; she didn't even seem to register his presence, her gaze fixated straight ahead. Yet, her look was distant, unfocused. The concern for her state was clear on the kid's face.
''Mr. Zald brought us dinner… you need to eat something .'' He stood directly in front of her line of sight. The elf kept staring at her, looking for a reaction. A few moments later, her gaze became more clear, finally noticing him.
''I´m not hungry.'' She said coldly. Luke gave her a stern look. ''You haven't eaten a single thing all day. It's not good for your health; here take it!'' He extended the bowl to her. Her whole demeanor was cold as she eyed him.
''Why are you here?'' She asked. The boy kept a serious face.
''I thought it was common sense to worry about those you love!'' He answered dryly. A sharp glare later, and he was a stuttering mess trying to phrase himself better.
''I-I mean… I don't want to leave you like this.'' He said honestly.
The air was tense. Alfia's cold stare never left his face. Even though he was intimidated by her posture and knew first hand how badly she could react, he was not going to back down on this. He promised her he wouldn't…
Half a minute passed before the woman broke the staredown. She turned her back on him and started to walk away.
''W-Wait, where are you going!?'' Alfia didn´t stop; walking away as she addressed him.
''That's none of your concern, child.'' Her dismissive reply reached his pointy ears. He strolled after her, carrying their dinner.
''Of course it is!'' Alfia slowed her steps until she stopped. ''Why?'' Her plain voice was barely audible; carrying a subtle troubled tone. ''Why do you care so much?'' She added; the boy's lips curled up in a small smile.
''Because… She cared.''
His words made her freeze. Her emotions threatening to leak out upon her sister´s mention.
''Meteria asked me before she passed away… She told me how much you clinged to her; how you placed her above everything else.'' The silver-haired woman flinched at his serene words; and how they struck true.
''She asked me to be there for you in her stead, to support you through all of this. I made a promise to her that day, and i don´t go back on my word!'' He proclaimed resolutely.
The sounds of the nocturnal fauna permeated throughout the forest as a pregnant silence was instilled between them. No sound came from the two; standing idly on the clearing, being illuminated by the moonlight.
''I just want you to know you are not alone. We´ll still be here for you; no matter what happens… There's also Bell of course…'' She turned towards him; her eyes were watery with tears that fought to leak out.
''I guess I don't need to tell you that she'd liked you raised him, don´t i?'' He said light heartedly. Alfia looked to the side, scoffing at the idea.
''As if I made the cut to play the mother role. Besides… I can´t take that away from her; Meteria is his mother not me. I´ve taken enough from her…'' She mumbled the last part under her breath.
''I disagree, you may have your quirks; but I know you would easily be up to the challenge. You aren't the Demon of Talent for nothing! ''
Alfia cleared her mind for a moment and looked at the rascal that wouldn't leave her to her own devices. Could she really do it? Should she do it?
She can't replace her sister as his mother; how could she forgive herself if she did? Substitute her, take a role that she sought with all her heart once she discovered she was pregnant. No, she couldn't stand the thought of robbing Meteria of that.
''You know, Lady Meteria said something about this. 'Alfia doesn´t need to be his mother, but rather I want her to be his mom!'. I didn't get it at first, but as we conversed it suddenly dawned on me. She wanted you to be his mother-figure. Lady Meteria is and always will be his mother, but she wanted you to be his mom in her stead… I don´t know if i explained it well—''
His tirade was put to a halt as he heard a choked sob. He looked towards the woman as she wiped her eyes; a small smile adorned her face.
''Oh, Meteria… You truly were too pure for this world.'' As she recomposed herself, the boy looked at her with hopeful eyes.
''You´ll still live with us then?'' He asked weakly. Alfia took a moment to register his question; once she did, a small laugh left her lips.
''Hahahaha, I thought you were brighter than this child… Of course I will remain with you lot. Where else would I go? Besides, I also have a promise to uphold.'' He cringed a little at his insecure question. Yeah, it was no brainer if you thought about it.
He smiled warmly at the reassurance of the promise she made to his parents. Luke walked up to her, extending a bowl with her food.
''Will you eat dinner with me them?'' Alfia shook her head slightly. Really, this boy…
She took the offered bowl, his features brightening up as she did. The pair settled themselves atop a slope, sitting comfortably in the grass. The elf tried to maintain the light mood with small talk as they ate.
In the distance, a scarred man observed the scene in amusement. He was watching in case Alfia did something harsh, but it seems it was unnecessary. The kid had really breached the fortress around the woman's heart. He didn't miss how she was smiling as they conversed, her previous grief and anger being forgotten for the moment; being replaced by a jovial mood as the boy reached out for her.
Zald turned his back and headed home; smiling as he thought about how their future would turn out.
5 years later
''Nii-san, nii-san! Can i go see you training today?'' An energetic 5 year old clutched the teenager´s legs, stopping him at the door. The elf looked down at the mop of white hair clinging on him, he smiled warmly at the child.
''Oh, that depends on your mom's approval. Did you ask her for permission?'' Bell looked up at him, pouting.
''She never lets me go! Mom always says 'It's not a place for children!', it 's not fair. I'll behave I promise!'' Luke made a playful thinking pose.
''Please, please!'' Bell pleaded with puppy eyes. He inherited even that from his mother it seemed. The elf nodded.
''Ok, I'll lend you a hand on this one. We´ll talk with her about it, and I will try to convince her this time. Here climb up!'' He picked up the small boy, placing him on top of his shoulders, giving a piggyback ride.
''Grandma we are leaving!'' He shouted from the door. Hera peaked her head from the kitchen, a frown evident on her face.
''How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that? Do i look old enough to be your grandparent!?''
A smug expression rose up to his face.
''You got a point, you don´t look that old. Although, technically you do—'' He sidestepped a ladle spoon aimed at his head. Bell squeaked at the force of the throw as the spoon embedded itself on the door.
''Oi, be careful! You could have hurt the little one.'' Luke chastised her as he took the ladle off the door. He walked up to the goddess, handing the utensil to her.
''Urgh– Fine… I´m sorry! Just stop referring to me as an old woman.'' The elf chuckled at her antics. Hera may be hard to deal with sometimes, but she really cared for everyone in her family.
''And where do you think you are taking my little boy, humm?'' As Luke opened his mouth to answer; Bell beat him to it.
''I´m going to see nii-san training!'' The boy exclaimed excitedly.
''Not so fast, we still have to talk with Lady Alfia about it. You know i can't do anything if she denies it.'' Bell sagged, losing his enthusiasm.
''Oi, cheer up! I got your back on this one, don´t worry.'' Luke reassured him. The boy's face lit up again, nodding energetically. Hera cleared her throat, gaining their attention.
''I don't recall having authorized him either!'' The elf rolled his eyes.
''Even you, grandma!?'' He said teasingly. Hera growled furiously at him, ready to bark a response.
''You know he's only being curious. Zeus has been filling his head with tales about the Age of Heroes, as well as the 'great adventurers of Orario who delve in the dungeon in search of glory, wealth and women'. Luke continued, avoiding another tirade from the goddess. He quoted the perverted god on the last part; while Bell's eyes shone upon the mention of heroes.
''And the closest thing he has to the stories is Zald, Alfia and I. Come on, let him indulge in his fantasy for a bit!'' He reasoned with her; while Bell made a cute begging gesture with his hands.
'Curse you and your cuteness child!' Hera thought, shaking her head, exasperated.
''Okay, he may go, but you better be careful with him. If he comes back hurt in any way, you will suffer the consequences!'' She stated menacingly. Luke blanched a bit at the near death threat, but nodded nevertheless.
''Fine then, we should get going. Oh, what do we say when someone accepts your request Bell?'' The boy looked confused for a moment, until his eyes widened in understanding.
''Thank you, grandma!'' Bell said innocently. Hera screamed frustratingly as the elf quickly made his way out with the boy on his back, all while laughing at Bell´s naivety.
The warm, bright light of the morning sun bathed the duo as they walked through the village. They greeted and waved at the villagers who were currently initiating their morning routines. At the far end of the settlement, the level 7 pair awaited them.
''Took you long enough—... Why did you bring Bell along?'' Alfia inquired, a subtle angered tone could be heard in her voice.
''He's been adamant on watching my training session today. So, i've brought him,to seek your clearance first!'' The woman´s closed eyes opened in a sharp glare.
''And what made you think I would allow it?'' She said in a plain tone. The elf looked at her with a poker face. Alfia could be a piece of work sometimes. He opened his mouth to respond, but the boy beat him to it again.
"Please Mom! I'll behave, I swear!''
Sixth Sense kicked in, signaling the upcoming blow. Luke was fast enough to step back, so instead of the punch hitting the poor boy's head, it struck him instead. He clutched the top of his head with one hand, while holding Bell steady with the other.
''Did you really just tried to hit him!? Are you out of your mind?'' The elf asked indignantly. Bell looked scared at how close he was to getting hit.
''But of course I did! I have already lectured him to call me step-mother; it's only a adequate punishment for his transgression.'' Alfia answered nonchalantly, not seeing anything wrong with her logic. Luke´s eye twitched at her attitude.
''Not if I have anything to say about it, and I do! He's 5 years old, you can't go around hitting him for the smallest of things, you are a level 7 for heaven's sake!''
''Don´t try to teach me how to educate him, child. I´m his parent, not you!'' Alfia rebutted stubbornly. The teenager sighed at her inflexibility, deciding to drop the subject for now.
''Fine, fine, you got a point. But getting back on track, why can't he tag along? We can keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't hurt himself, so I don't see any problem!'' Bell made his effective puppy eyes to help his brother with his argument.
''I can't take that risk, your training can get quite hectic at times. One small mistake and he can be injured badly, and that's out of the question!'' The elf shook his head at her overprotectiveness.
Really, she cared for this boy more than anything else, sometimes it bordered on insanity! He found it ironic how she didn´t hesitate to hurt the same boy for some minor transgression, but was paranoid about him injuring himself during their session.
''I´m sorry Bell, but it looks like today is not your day.'' Luke said, looking at the downtrodden kid. As he turned, going to take Bell back home; Zald stepped up.
''Hold on for a moment. Today´s training will be carried out by Alfia, and while you´re at that I can look after the little one.'' The duo looked hopefully at the man. Alfia sent an annoyed glare his way.
''Don´t give me that look lady, you are aware that I'm more than capable of protecting him from any adversity.'' She clicked her tongue, he gave her a fair point.
''Please Lady Alfia, he never saw you fighting. Bell´s excited to see how strong and amazing an adventurer can be!'' Luke pleaded again, with Bell nodding all the way. The Silence was pensive, looking between the two rascals and her fellow adventurer. She sighed in resignation.
''You may come, but you must do as we say, understood?'' Bell had stars in his eyes as nodded. Alfia pointed at the hulking man.
''And you! If he ends up hurting himself in any way, you are going to regret not dying to the dragon!'' Zald scoffed at her death threat; as if he was afraid of it; but nodded anyway.
''The same goes to you little elf, for entertaining this idea!'' Luke gulped a lump in his throat, aware that she´d meant it.
''Thank you, Uncle Zald!'' The little rabbit brought their attention away from promises of death. The child's sincere happiness made a small smile appear on the man's face.
After the matter was settled, they headed towards the training grounds. Five years ago, the chosen place, distant from the village, was composed of a large grass field surrounded by trees. If you compared how the clearing looks now to what it once was, the difference would be abysmal.
The flat and smooth grass that covered the soil gave place to a rocky and barren ground, with only a small fraction of vegetation remaining. All along the clearing one could see the aftermath of their spars. Craters, cracks in the soil and even scorch marks; results of their intense daily training. Even the surrounding trees feel victims to their attacks.
After 5 years of hellish battles with two level 7 adventures; whose always ended with the elf being beaten to an inch of his life; he reached level 3.
From what Zald and Alfia told him, it was incredibly rare for someone to reach that level outside of Orario. According to them, the dungeon was a crucial factor that increased excelia that their falna needed to up their stats and levels. Most monsters in the surface palled in comparison to their dungeon counterparts, so it difficulted the grinding process of anyone that tried to become stronger.
He couldn't hope to achieve this feat without their help. Facing off two absurdly stronger opponents daily proved to be an adequate substitute to dungeon delving as his stats stacked consistently throughout the years.
Zeus said that his progress rate and length was absurd when compared to most, jokingly saying 'it's befitting of The Incarnation of Talent to have a disciple that mirrored herself'.
Before each level up, he managed to make his stats reach S´s in all categories. It was an extremely hard feat, one so difficult that most wouldn't achieve it no matter how hard they trained, or how many monsters they killed.
A falna liberates one soul's true potential, and if you have already reached said potential/limit, then it would require a humongous effort and time and risk to even add a couple of points to your stats. That's why most never grinded to this extreme, as it was essentially a pipe dream to most and thus the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. So most leveled up as soon as they reached their limits and met the requirements or simply stagnates on the current level
He was undoubtedly blessed with his latent potential, but he sure as hell worked his ass to stack those points. Endurance for example, was the status that he progressed slower when compared to the others; despite getting beaten to near death…
Every. single. day.
Nevertheless he goes beyond, having faith in his growth and in his masters. And through sweat, tears, blood and sheer fucking will, he was able to stack S's on Endurance as well, remedying his shortcoming.
What baffled Zeus even more; and everyone for that matter, was his SS stats on Agility and Dexterity; courtesy of his Speedrunner skill that boosted those specific stats growth and apparently let him break past the normal S limit. Something that only Alfia had been able to do, with her SS in magic.
Speaking of leveling up, he still had nightmares about what he did to be able to do it. You see, to level up one needed a special kind of excelia, one that was acquired doing feats that were recognized by the gods and goddesses. Normally it would be facing off a strong monster or surviving one in his case.
Because of the monster problem, the best alternative they found was him fighting against them while they actually tried…
He never saw death so up close as the time to level up came. For the first time he saw a glimpse of their true strength, an overwhelming force that sent shivers to his very soul. What shocked him even more, was that not only they displayed just a fraction of their power, but they were also extremely weakened by their conditions if compared to their primes.
He could only imagine the absolute nightmare it would be and the hopelessness one would feel when facing the level 7 pair without their crippling illnesses.
At his first level up, he faced off against Zald, with the next that would bring him to his current level would be carried out by Alfia. Both confrontations could be summarized as a battle for survival, battles that he barely made it out alive.
Nevertheless, his survival was enough of an accomplishment for the level ups, and he came out without missing any limbs; that was a win in his book.
Amidst the harsh training and near death experiences he filled his third magic slot. Shinra Tensei, a gravity defying spell that created a repulsive force around him. He could narrow that repulsive force to a certain direction only or all around him.
It was an extremely useful magic that didn't require a chant, with both offensive and defensive capabilities. The strength and range of the shockwave was determined by how much mind he put into it, with some really destructive results if he used most of it in a single repulsion.
From what Alfia told him, filling up all the magic slots was a rare feat, one that was only accomplished by the strongest mages in Orario´s history, her included. She attributed it to a mix of his training, latent natural talent and his elf heritage; know for their high magical potential.
He was brought out of his thoughts as they arrived at the battle scarred clearing.
''Bell. Stay with Zald and listen to him at all times, you'll suffer the due consequences later if you don´t, understood?'' Alfia warned before the session started. Bell nodded as Luke sat him besides the man.
The woman and the elf walked to the middle of the rocky ground, preparing themselves for the spar. Once they got into position, the elf launched himself at her, cracking the soil at his feet. He unsheathed Star Platinum, going for a wide swing aimed at her head.
Alfia diverted his attack to the side with her bare hands. He used his momentum, spinning mid-air and bringing his foot towards her head in a downwards arc. The Demon of Talent easily blocked his kick, grabbing his ankle and throwing him in the opposite direction.
Luke graciously maneuvered his body and planted his sword in the dirt to stop his momentum; stopping 20 meters away from his opponent.
''Deus Tonitrui'' Lightning enveloped his form as he dashed towards his foe again; leaving a small crate where he once stood.
He launched a flurry of fast attacks, combining his swordsmanship and hand-to-hand to try and land a hit. Alfia nimbly evaded the onslaught, even blocking and redirecting some of his swings and stabs with only her index finger.
Luke broke off from his offensive, gaining some distance from her. The lightning increased as he unsheathed Nightingale as well, going all out while dual-wielding.
''Shinra Tensei'' a shockwave headed towards Alfia as the elf started another offensive. His repulsive force destroyed anything in its path, be it rocks or grass. The Silence retaliated with her Satanas Verion sending blocks of sound against his spell. A gale washed over the whole clearing as the two invisible spells met. The two battled for dominance for a few moments, but the elf´s spell ultimately succumbed.
Luke was unfazed by it, having already jumped over the clash, heading straight towards the woman.
In the sidelines, Bell's hair flowed wildly at the spelling clash, his eyes were glued in awe at the two combatants as he struggled to keep track of their movements.
'This is what adventurers look like?' He thought, amazed as he recalled his grandpa's stories about them. His fascination was soon replaced by panic as Luke was sent flying after being hit by Alfia´s sound spell.
He began to run towards him, but a large arm was placed in front of him. He looked questioning at Zald who looked unconcerned at the elf.
''Wait.'' He said in a plain tone. Bell didn't get what he meant until he looked at Luke who was slowly standing up. Blood leaked from his orifices, including his eyes as he struggled to balance himself.
His saving grace was that he launched his spell right after launched hers, otherwise he would be mostly likely out of the fight already. After getting a hold of his senses again, he began another relentless assault.
All the while, the small impressionable boy watched, mesmerized by Luke´s resilience.
''That's the world of an adventurer kid. A true adventurer always seeks to improve himself, not only for his benefit, but to protect what or who he keeps close to his heart— His dreams and goals, his loved ones, whatever it may be…'' Zald commented, gaining the boy's attention.
''A true adventurer… Insn´t that the same as a hero though?'' Zald kept his stoic expression as took his eyes off from the fight and focused on the boy beside him.
''Maybe… What do you consider a true hero?'' Bell's eyes shone as he jumped in excitement.
''A hero is someone that saves the day. The person that defeats the monster, saves the girl and protect the weak!'' He said, imagining the heroes of old that his grandpa always told him about. The man nodded at his definition.
''You see, whatever one may be; a hero or an adventurer, even both. One must always strive to be stronger. A hero can't defeat his foe and save someone if he's not strong enough; his path would be meaningless if he can't do anything!'' Bell looked wide-eyed at the adventure´s wisdom.
He 's right! You need to turn your lip service into reality if you want to be a hero; otherwise they´d be only empty words. If I want to be a hero I need to grow stronger as well!
Bell held a goofy grin at his newfound motivation. One that quickly turned into a wince as a loud crack reached his ears. Luke was sent flying, knocked out with a direct haymaker to the jaw.
The boy palled a bit thinking about someday having to pass through this kind of thing to become stronger.
''Are you sure you aren't hurt nii-san?'' The rubbelite-eyed boy asked atop the elf's head. Despite having his wounds healed, his clothes were in tatters. Holes, cuts and even dried blood on them gave the impression that he should be gravely wounded.
''Don´t worry Bell. Lady Alfia´s healing is the only thing that made sure I stayed alive throughout all these years of training. I´m good as new!'' He assured the boy, soothing his worries.
The sun was past halfway of its path of being perpendicular with the ground, signaling it was time to head back home to prepare lunch. Mostly for Zald´s strict paladar, where he was adamant that he would be responsible for every meal that was made.
'' You were amazing nii-san! You looked just like the heroes of tales grandpa likes to tell. I want to be as strong as they are!'' Bell exclaimed energetically.
''Well then, you have a lot of work to do If you really want to be like them. Starting with your food, you need to eat plenty so you grow to be a strong man in the future!'' The elf entertained the kid, while Alfia looked sideways at their interaction.
Ever since her sister passed away, the elf had taken upon himself to help raise her son. While Hera, her and even that scoundrel Zeus, were more than capable to uphold this task, he stubbornly insisted on taking part as well.
These past 5 years he wholeheartedly assisted on anything he could. Feeding, cleaning and even playing with Meteria´s child. As time passed, a strong fraternal bond was slowly developing between the two. It was evident whenever one saw their interactions nowadays; the two treated each other as brothers.
For all of Alfia´s coldness, seeing the relationship between the two warmed her heart; although she would never admit it out loud.
''That's not a problem! Uncle Zald´s food is delicious!'' Bell's energetic response took her out of her thoughts. Luke nodded. ''It sure is! To this day i'm still baffled that Mr. Zald is such a good cook…'' The man hummed beside the two youngsters.
''One must know his way around the kitchen if he desires quality meals. While my stomach may digest anything i eat, it doesn't mean i don't crave for tasteful food, much to the contrary! '' Zald explained. Luke eyed the man with a pensive face. He owed much of what he learned to this day to this man, and he wasn't talking only about combat.
The bulky adventurer was unquestionably a great chef, making the most varied and exotic dishes the elf had seen; all whose taste was worthy of being served in the most renowned restaurants in the world. One would never suspect that such a gruff, rough looking adventurer; a experienced and mighty warrior of immense power; excelled in such a menial activity such as cooking.
Luke made a habit of assisting Zald whenever he prepared the meals alongside Hera. After some time the man offered to teach him his cuisine, an offer that he honestly couldn't refuse. At each lesson in the kitchen, Luke noted that the man was just as good of a teacher in cooking as he was in the battle.
While he was still not on Zald´s level of cooking, he came really close. So much that the man himself recognized his worth in the kitchen, approving his dishes even with his picky taste for food.
Everyone else also saw his improvement and applauded his dishes. Especially his deities, with Hera commenting that he would make a great husband. Zeus, in all his pervertness, pointed out that he could use his cooking as a hook to attract many beautiful women; although being scolded by his spouse afterwards.
Luke facepalmed mentally, remembering that occasion. That old man was a hopeless womanizer and degenerate; there was no saving it!
He had lost count of how many times Alfia had almost killed him from trying to peek or grope her. He even started spouting his lecherous ways to the young, impressionable mind of little Bell.
However, once Alfia and Hera found out when the kid questioned them about Zeus 'lessons', the god paid dearly for it. That day he came really close to going back to heaven, had it not been for his and Zald interference.
''Can I help with lunch today?'' Bell inquired, gaining their attention. Before any of the two responsible for the meal could have a say, Alfia spoke up.
''Aren't you forgetting anything young man?'' She said in a condescending tone. The boy looked confused for a second, until he remembered what she was referring to.
''Oh, that 's right. I still have my lessons to do!'' Alfia hummed in confirmation. She took the boy´s education and behavior very seriously. The woman was inflexible when it came to good manners, punishing the boy harshly whenever he disobeyed or had a bad conduct on her view. The last thing she wanted was for her surrogate son to become a punk!
Alfia would also tutor him on various scholar topics, seeking to educate him on the vast world out there, so he wasn't oblivious of when and why certain events happened, culminating in Bell understanding why things worked out the way they did in the world.
Her lessons were rigorous and challenging. Luke himself still felt overwhelmed by her teaching whenever he participated in her classes.
But he had to agree that her method was efficient and captivating. Drawing their utmost attention as she explained various topics like history, geography. races, etc. She even had knowledge on some pretty advanced math and physics topics, thanks to her love for reading and fast learning.
All the information that the woman possessed was astonishing. He doubted that many people of her age could be as knowledgeable as she was; even the experienced, older ones would have some difficulty rivaling her.
Guess she wasn't known as the Incarnation of Talent for nothing, huh?
''What will you be teaching today?'' Luke asked, walking besides the woman.
''Orario and its foundation… The events that led to the city being built atop the dungeon and how it revolved around it to this day.'' Alfia answered in her usual bored tone. The elf hummed in thought.
Orario, the dungeon city... He already knew pretty much all that transpired in the Ancient Times before it came to be. How the heroes rallied all the races behind them, pushing back the evils that sprawled from The Great Hole that was now known as the dungeon.
For a long time, monsters plagued the lower world, killing and destroying anything that lived. Even with the combined might of the various races, it was becoming a losing war. It was an era of darkness that lasted for as long as time was known… Until; with the help of spirits; the heroes came to be and brought with them much needed hope for the world.
Many epic tales were born from that time. Such as the Knights of Fianna, a group of pallums that were immortalized for clearing a path so the unified armies of the different races could reach The Great Hole, fending off the horde of abominations that sprawled from it.
Or the tale of Albert, the mercenary king who led a group of warriors from various races, from High-Elf to dwarf, humans and beast people to amazonesses and a spirit, including the amazon Empress herself in their ranks. His greatest feat was forcing the Black Dragon to flee from Orario after he injured his eye, making the beast known for the name it has today. Unfortunately, he died in the process.
Luke found it curious that the version that Zeus told was different from any other version he had read. He stated that Albert´s last name was Waldstein and that the hero had a daughter before he died.
That time came to be known as the Age of Heroes, lasting until the first god descended from heaven to assist them in their conflict. Ultimately resulting in the sealing of the hole the monsters crawled from, isolating that malevolent force in the depths of Orario, turning it into the dungeon it was today and the dawn of the Age of The Gods; one that lasted to this very day.
"Haven't you already given him this 'class'?'' He added. Alfia opened her eyes slightly, looking at him sideways.
''Indeed, but someone convinced me of letting him see the training, instead of reviewing the subject at hand! And so i must recapitulate it with him.'' The woman answered in a passive-aggressive manner. The elf looked at the landscape, purposely ignoring her indirect jab.
''I'll make up for it, don´t worry mom!'' Bell said innocently as the elf instinctively strained his muscles. He narrowly saved the boy from getting punched on top of his head.
''Will you cut that out already, he's your son for heaven's sake!'' Luke barked at her.
Alfia swiped at him again, the elf threw his ride towards Zald as he dodged by the neck of his hair again. The man effortlessly caught the kid by the back of his shirt.
''You don't have a say in how I should reprimand him, I already warned you once . He's under my responsibility, child!'' She lunged at the elf again.
Zald watched in amusement as the two got at it again, waiting for them to finish their antics . The kid sat on his back now as he looked annoyed at the two fighting.
''Why do you have a bandage on your head? Did Alfia took the training too far again?'' Hera questioned the heterochromatic elf as she cut meat on the wood counter.
''Not exactly… She just refuses to heal me. This is her punishment for me sticking my nose when Bell called her his mother— Even if she is, in fact, his mother.'' He clarified, as he steamed one of the pots on the stove.
Behind the two, the only executive member of Zeus Familia left worked like a professional chef, seasoning and smearing the already cut meat, while keeping an eye on the boiling vegetables.
''Figures… I've yet to meet one who's more stubborn and hard headed than her. You can´t really please that insufferable brat.'' The goddess commented as Luke chuckled.
The two women hated each other´s gut, barely tolerating one another's presence. But, for all the lousy disagreements they had, the two were actually quite similar. Both were a piece of work to deal with their confrontational and headstrong personas. And also,on the good side, deep down were both softies and compassionate as they cherished those close to them.
Ironic. They had so much in common yet detested each other, despite one mirroring the other in their traits. Honestly, these two were an enigma to the elf. Nonetheless, he wouldn't trade them for nothing in the world.
''Changing topics— Where's the old man?'' Luke questioned as he put the lid back on the pot, letting its contents cook for now.
''He's supposed to be coming back with the hunting party. Although he´s taking more than usual…'' Hera pointed out while handing the rest of the sliced meat to the hulking chef in the back.
The front door creaked as it was pushed open. A pair of footsteps could be heard coming from the entrance. Alfia and Bell were the first to see the newcomers as they sat in the restroom, currently revisiting the boy´s lessons.
The old degenerate god came into view in the corridor, but that was expected. What caught their attention was the man that stood beside him. Or rather, the god that came along with him. The onyx-haired deity, on the contrary of both Zeus and Hera, didn't hide his divine aura, making him easily recognizable as a god.
He had jet black hair with two cadet gray locks and gray eyes. His clothing consisted of a brown buttoned up jacket with a white shirt underneath, black trousers and a blue cape\cloak. His whole demeanor was relaxed and laid back; a friendly smile adorned his face.
''Hey, hey people. How's your day been?'' The unknown deity greeted them. Bell was surprised, being the first time he felt a god's presence. Meanwhile, Alfia gaze was cautious and analyzing.
''And who are you supposed to be?'' The woman questioned coldly. The god placed a hand on his head.
''Oh, where are my manners… I´m Eren, pleased to meet you!'' He presented himself, making a curving gesture.
''He has come to us with an interesting proposal, one that we better should discuss after lunch!'' Zeus spoke up besides him. The woman noted the pervert´s subdued tone, but didn´t comment on it.
Another pair of footsteps was heard, this time coming from the kitchen. Hera and Luke headed to the restroom to meet the newcomer, as Zald took upon himself to make the final touches of their meal.
Hera's eyes widened in shock as she recognized the deity besides her husband. The god that presided over evil. The descendant of Chaos itself.
Erebus. The Absolute Malevolence.
What was this crazy, evil fanatic doing here!
''You! What in the tarnation are you doing here!?'' The goddess demanded pointing at Erebus. He seemed unfazed by her aggressiveness.
''Oh my, there's no need for agitation. I´ve come here with an offer you might be interested in.'' He responded politely as Hera looked skeptical.
''Don't fret honey, he has good intentions.'' Her husband spoke in an uncharacteristic serious tone. The goddess still wasn't convinced as she glared at the chaos deity. After a few moments she clicked her tongue and gestured towards the sofa.
''Make yourself comfortable, lunch will be served soon…'' Hera said annoyed as she headed back to the kitchen, not wanting to deal with the creep, lonely god.
Luke observed the stranger deity, wondering why a god would come to their remote village, far away from anything of real importance. The only reason he could think was that it either involved his deities or their children, maybe both…
''Do you want some water or anything, Lord…'' He trailed off, not having catched the god's name. Said god perked up at the question.
''Eren. Also, drop the Lord thing, no need for you for the offering but no, i´m fine.'' The god maintained his upbeat attitude while he took a seat.
An icy silence permeated in the room as they kept stealing glances at one another awkwardly. The exception being the curious boy that sat beside Alfia.
'' You are really a god… It's the first time I've seen one. I´ve only heard about the various deities around the world from the tales my grandpa told me! Oh, I´m Bell Cranel by the way.'' Bell said in awe. Eren gave Zeus a knowing look before smiling at the kid.
''100% a god in flesh and bone. I assume a deity strolling around these parts is a rare occurrence, huh?'' Bell nodded excitedly.
''Our village is very isolated, so whoever of great prestige such as a god passes through here, it's a big thing!'' Eren laughed while discreetly looking sideways at the other deity in the room.
''Yeah, I figured as much. It's a shame though, that my visit will only be brief, would have liked to see how things worked so deep in the mountains!'' Bell perked up at the last part.
''Wait! You´ll be leaving so soon?'' He asked in a mix of surprise and disappointment. Eren nodded.
''Unfortunately, i´m due to leave in two days after we discuss my offer.'' The kid's disappointment gave place to curiosity as he registered the god's words.
''Offer…What kind of offer?'' The god shook his head. ''Sorry, but that's only between the adults.'' Bell pouted in annoyance but dropped the matter, he knew that prying on adult subjects was rude.
Eren continued to strike in small talks, speaking of various mundane topics. He even told a fake story about how he met Zeus and Hera and became acquainted. It was evident to the elf that Zeus had asked him to not disclose his and Hera´s godhood to Bell, who merely saw them as a couple of ordinary humans.
Eren was a peculiar figure, being very friendly, mannered and generally approachable. A rare trait among the gods and goddesses, whose arrogance, indifference with mortal lives and obnoxious attitude, was the norm amongst them, at least to a certain degree. In short, he seemed like a good person.
But…
Luke couldn't shake off that feeling that there was more to it. Something beneath that friendly face…something dark.
The elf did not sense any ill intentions coming from him, besides, Zeus apparently was an old friend of his. That he didn't doubt. His god may be a degenerate but was he no fool; time and time again he had proved his wisdom and trustworthiness in serious matters. Lecherous ways apart, Luke would proudly adhere to all his ideals and advice.
If his God trusted Eren so would he; or at least give him the benefit of the doubt.
Even then, the sensation that something lurked behind the deities' actions, still remained. A sentiment shared by Alfia, who kept a keen eye on the newcomer. The woman wouldn't hesitate to send him back to heaven if he tried to harm her family in any way, afterlife consequences be damned!
Time ticked away, as did their conversations; and in a couple of minutes the mood was more light and carefree as Luke and Alfia gradually joined in the talking; despite the latter's greater suspiciousness.
As they engaged in jolly small talk for more than half an hour, their food was ready. The hulking adventurer came from the kitchen, sporting casual clothing with a yellow apron on top.
''Lunch is ready…'' He said in his monotonous, gruff voice.
Eren placed a hand on his mouth while he curved himself, stilling a laugh upon seeing the mighty Glutton, the renowned level 7 that one-shotted the Behemoth, acting like a house-husband. Not in a million years would he have imagined he would catch the proud warrior like this!
Zald kept a straight face, looking at the deity as if he was mentally challenged while he laughed like a buffoon.
''Thank you for the meal, it was delicious! I sincerely would have never pegged Zald as such a great cook…'' Eren commented as he sat cross legged on a chair. At his front, stood a small wooden table, and across it on a couch, were the two adventurers that were the reason he came all this way.
At the side, Zeus and Hera made themselves comfortable on the remaining couch; the latter wore an impatient face. The King of Olympus was unusually quiet and serious. Something that wasn't missed by the other three since he came home with Eren or rather… Erebus, the chaos god.
After the meal was eaten and the kitchen and restroom were properly cleaned; a task that the evil god helped in good faith; they would discuss the matter at hand. His proposition, that is.
Zeus quietly asked Luke to go outside and entertain Bell while they would have a private conversation. The elf complied, giving them the opportunity to speak openly without any repercussions.
''Thanks for the compliment… But I think we should focus on the main point of this conversation.'' Zald said with his arms crossed. The god nodded, while gesturing to himself.
''Well then… First I must introduce myself properly. My real name is Erebus, the one that presides over evil. I´ve come here with a proposal you might be interested in!'' Hera growled irritated at the god.
''And what would someone like you have that's worthy of our time?'' The goddess questioned with a mocking tone.
Hera despised the evil gods the likes of him since her time in heaven. Gods that enjoyed others suffering, who praised and spread chaos and death to the world, bringing pain and suffering to innocent people. As the goddess of family and childbirth, Hera hated every single one of those maniacs. Including the one visiting her home.
While she never interacted much with Erebus as he was usually isolated from other deities, she knew of his ideals. How he sought 'Absolute Evil' and wanted to guarantee that everyone cowered against it.
She didn't let herself be fooled by his friendly attitude.
''Oh, but I have… I'm sure that it would be quite tempting to your last children !'' He answered calmly, not even a bit affected by Hera´s aggressiveness. The two adventurers narrowed their eyes at the god.
''You see, my ultimate goal is to be seen as 'Absolute Malevolence'. A being that represents all that's evil in the world— the archenemy of justice, and cement the hatred and fear that everyone should feel about true evil!'' Hera looked ready to lash at him, only containing herself after Zeus whispered something to her, a completely serious aura surrounded his persona.
''While I seek to show what evil is to this world, I can´t ignore what´s about to come. The Promised Time and Maquia are near… And the last of the Three Great Quests is still unfinished. While I uphold the idea of evil, I don't want to see the destruction of the Lower World. After all, what purpose would it have if no one is alive to see it?'' He had everyone's full attention now. Even Hera looked intrigued at where he was getting at.
''That being said, I formulated a plan that might put a stop to the world's end. Unfortunately, your Familias failed in the subjugation of the One Eyed Black Dragon, despite your amazing past feats and unmatched prowess. A power vacuum surged in Orario because of your downfall, one that my Evilus colleagues are thriving on at this moment. Loki and Freya Familias might have stood up as the new strongest in the city, but they palled in comparison with you guys!'' Erebus looked directly at the two level 7´s.
''They don't stand a chance against what's to come, and that's where my plan comes in. Alfia, Zald, I want you two to serve as stepping stones to the current generation of adventurers in Orario. Give your fleeing lives in a battle that would push the current generation beyond their current limits, turning them into suitable warriors and give a glimmer of hope to the world! '' The two were caught off guard by the unexpected request.
''As it currently stands, even Evilus is giving the city's strongest a big headache, plaguing the city since you left, with even the strongest Familias working together with the Guild, been unsuccessful in tearing the group out of the city.'' He gestured towards the two.
''The only way to prepare them for the Black Dragon and Maquia it is by breaking them out of their shell, giving them a challenge were they would be forced to grow stronger to overcome or die trying!'' Alfia looked at him with narrowed eyes.
''What makes you think we would accept this plan of yours?'' She said in a plain tone. Erebus had a sly smile on his face.
''I know of your conditions… You guys will probably live only a couple of years longer with the illnesses plaguing your bodies. That is if you treat them…'' Both adventurers became downtrodden at his statement.
He was right. Their conditions only worsened as time passed by, no matter what they tried, nothing seemed to remedy Zald´s poisoning and Alfia´s sickness.
Zald´s body was being more and more consumed by the beast´s poison, his flesh becoming purple and rotten while slowly killing him from the inside. Alfia was inflicted with progressively longer and harsher symptoms, coughing and vomiting large amounts of blood and becoming bedridden for days until her body recovered.
It came without a say that their strength was also diminishing as their conditions worsened.
''Our group has the means to prolong your lifespan for a few more years until my plan is put into action. Herbs from the Black Desert as well as branches from an elven sacred tree. Those two are hard to obtain, especially the latter, but we have our ways… So, what do you say?'' He opened his arms in an exaggerated gesture.
Silence had fallen on the room. Both adventurers wore troubled expressions as they pondered his offer. Hera's anger gave place to confusion.
''Why would someone like you care if the world ended or not!? Besides, wouldn't you be strengthening those that oppose you as well?'' She questioned pointing a finger at Erebus who shrugged his shoulders in response.
''As I said, my ideals have no meaning if there´s no one alive to see them… Nonetheless, I don't despise those that uphold justice and order, on the contrary I respect them. Justice is an idea that must be fought for and reached, just like mine. Evil and Justice are necessary to balance each other; so I don't mind if my plan ends up in my demise. I would be seen as the ''Absolute Malevolencel'' by then and that's enough for me, if i can prepare them for the looming dangers that creep in the horizon, that´s a plus…'' He finished with a small smile.
Hera was puzzled by his logic. He was a lunatic and took pride in that, but on the other side, he planned to help the world while accomplishing his malevolent goals. To her, he was a walking contradiction, one that she was having a hard time understanding.
A whole minute passed in a tense quietness before a gruff voice broke it.
''I´m in.'' Zald´s booming voice reverberated through the room. Alfia was taken back with his sudden response, while Hera was also perplexed with how fast he agreed.
''W-What? Why though!?'' The Silence said confused beside the man.
''He´s right… We don't have much time left on this world, even with the known treatments, we can only prolong the inevitable for a few more years at best. That's why I agree with him.'' His gaze switched between his family and the evil god.
''If I can help prevent the catastrophes that are to come then i´ll gladly join you. I don´t care if I will be remembered as a villain and an enemy of Orario, my image forever disgraced in history. If I die satisfied that's all that matters in the end.'' He stated calmly. Alfia gritted her teeth.
''I didn´t even said if i agree or not!'' Zald looked determined at her.
''I don't plan on you joining me… You can still live the rest of your days here if you want, I´m more than enough to challenge the city. You have your surrogate son and the elf to take care off, there's no need for you to come as well.'' Alfia´s expression was indescribable as her mouth looked hung open, surprised at his consideration for her.
''Why aren't you saying anything you old pervert!? Are you gonna let one of your last children throw his life away without your say in the matter?'' She questioned after organizing her thoughts.
Zeus had been quiet throughout the whole ordeal, not even once saying his opinion on Zald's decision . A serene expression fell on the god's face
''Ever since I created my Familia I never interfered with my children´s decision. Whatever path they decided to trail, I supported them through all of it. Even now… If he wants to die being a wall that Orario must overcome, then I won´t stop him!'' He declared sincerely. Hera clicked her tongue beside him.
''He may be a hopeless pervert but he's undeniably a good leader. His Familia always sought free choice amongst their ranks… Even if I don't fully agree on it… Honestly, there's nothing I can say to stop even you whether you decide to go or not, as you would do as you pleased as always.'' The goddess pointed out. Alfia rolled her eyes, but didn´t protest, knowing it was true.
A new silence settled itself amongst them as they awaited Alfia´s response. Zald sighed as he placed a hand on her shoulder.
''I know you want to raise the kid. You don't have to come if that's what you desire… Don't feel forced, because you aren't.'' He tried to sooth her worries and help her follow her heart on the matter.
Zald himself cared deeply for the two boys and wanted the best for them. That was one of the main reasons he accepted the proposition. If he could give his life to make a better world to those he loved, then he would die happily. But he knew he was more than enough to take on the entirety of Orario, thus Alfia´s presence was unnecessary and gave her the option to stay with her family.
Even if Alfia wasn't a member of his Familia, Zald still cared deeply for her. They shared many battles together, and even with her difficult persona, they had learned to respect each other. After everything that transpired since their defeat , he felt a sense of responsibility over the young woman and both Familias failure . He knew were her feelings resided and was willing to bear all this burden for her and everyone's sake.
After another minute passed without response, the chaos god spoke up.
''You don't need to answer immediately, i´ll stay in the village for two days. You can think this through and give me a answer till then!'' Erebus butted in as he tried to lighten the mood. As no response came from anyone the god sagged dejectedly and bowed.
''Well… I guess i´ll take my leave then, thanks for the hospitality. See ya!'' He walked towards the entrance, his footsteps echoing in the wooden floor until he left.
A pregnant silence filled the place once the door closed. While Zeus and Zald were calm and collected about the situation, Hera and Alfia were troubled by different reasons. The goddess was still trying to grasp the logic behind Erebus intentions, while Alfia had her mind full with her new dilemma. To stay beside those she loves, or sacrifice herself in a last effort to save the world from destruction…
Luke slowly pried his eyes open. His body felt like lead as he tried to sit up, every movement made him grit his teeth as the injuries throbbed painfully around his body. His clothes were in shambles, almost as ruined as his body was from the wounds, blood flowed freely from his numerous cuts as he tried to move. As he managed to sit straight he looked around him.
His training was brutal and destructive, that was nothing new. But this…
The ground was littered with giant craters, most were larger than a big house. The soil seemed unstable with how cracked and broken down it was, the surrounding trees were either cut down from direct blows or have fallen from the shockwaves of the fighting. It was certainly one of the most intense fights he ever fought, on par with the ones he was able to level up with.
A shadow was cast upon him, blocking the evening light as a hulking figure stood upon him. He forced himself to stand up, his body screaming at him through all of it. His legs gave out and he dropped on his butt, a pained welp escaped his mouth.
As he tried to stand again, he saw an extending hand right on his face. He looked up and saw his master with a rare genuine and proud smile.
''After the last blow I'm surprised you are even conscious. You have come a long way kid…'' The elf let out a pained chuckle as he took his hand, dragging him off the dirt.
''What did you expect? I´m being trained by The Glutton himself, the mighty Predator. It was obvious I would progress… one way or another.'' He said the last part in a low tone as he held his dislocated shoulder. A suppressed pained cry echoed in the destroyed clearing as he put his shoulder in the socket. He moved it to see if it was okay as the man spoke up.
''Don't sell yourself short, you are talented and determined, kid. You have grown as much as you did because of your sheer will; many would break under this kind of training for so long. You would have been a great adventurer in our Familia…'' His words carried nothing but honesty. Luke chuckled at the compliment.
''Thanks, but I'm only doing all this to protect everyone and uphold my promise…'' The elf´s eyes seemed distant for a few moments before he focused on the man again.
''Why didn't Lady Alfia accompanied us today?'' The fourteen-years old elf questioned his teacher.
Ever since they had their private chat with that god, Eren, everyone has been acting strange, especially Alfia.
Hera seemed troubled by something, always being distracted while doing something around the house. She avoided his question once Luke approached her about her behavior. Zeus was more quiet than usual, more serious. More than once the elf had seen his god with a distant gaze, deep in thought about something.
Then there was the man beside him. Zald normally had a stoic attitude, never really showing his emotions for most things. But Luke saw how he stared at everyone at the dinner table yesterday, a small smile on his face as everyone spent a lovely meal together. His eyes shone with an unknown resolve.
Alfia was the most odd amongst them. The calm and composed woman, who would only lose her calm when something specifically bothering to her happened, looked distressed throughout the entire day. She was way more clingy to Bell than usual, despite the fact that she regularly used the kid as a body pillow at night.
He also noted how she spent most of the day with Bell and him; he wouldn't have given much thought if not for how thoughtful and worried she looked. She was dismissive whenever he questioned her about it, even going as far as giving him a lump on the head for being too insistent.
''She wanted to spend the day with her son today, that's the reason for her absence.'' Zald clarified, as the elf pried further.
''What was the deal that this Eren god offered? Everyone is acting strange since them.'' The man was quiet for a few seconds, gazing at his pupil with a strange look.
''Today, is the day your training ends… At least with me, that is.'' Zald stated calmly, while Luke's eyes widened in shock.
''W-What!? Why though? T-This is so sudden!'' The teenager questioned, taken back with the out of nowhere declaration.
''That god has a plan to help stop the monster that was the cause of our downfall. If it's successful, the world might have a glimmer of hope of defeating the Black Dragon. It's worth the effort if it guarantees the world and everyone´s safety… I know you are aware of my current condition, I won't be around for much longer anyway….'' The elf gained a depressed look in his eyes.
He knew of it. How the poison in his body was reaching a critical point soon, the dark-purplish, rotten tone of the skin in his upper torso that he tried to hide from prying eyes was enough proof. He hated to admit it, but Zald was dying… And there was nothing they could do about it.
The same goes to Alfia, whose sickness was becoming worse and worse. Reaching a point where some days he would have to help her; despite her protest; for days as she was forced on top of a bed, her body unable to move as she coughed a concerning amount of blood.
''Alfia still hasn't said if she will participate or not. Primarily because her assistance is not required on this task… I´m more than enough.'' The man said the last part in a low, dark voice.
Luke was perplexed with the situation, lost in thought trying to grasp everything that was said. Half a minute passed in silence before the man continued.
''My guidance to you ends here today, take everything that you have learned and experienced to heart, you are my last disciple, be honored by that title. You were one of my best students; I´m proud of you, kid… Your parents would be proud… ''
Tears pricked at the corner of the elf's mismatched eyes. He wiped them with his arm before they spilled out, giving the man a grin.
''Thank you , for everything…'' Luke extended his right hand. Zald grasped his forearm in a warrior´s handshake as the elf did the same.
At that moment, the apprentice and master shared all their emotions in a single gesture, as no more words were needed to be spoken between them. After a few seconds, they broke contact.
''As this is the last time we´ll probably see each other, can we go for another round?... Our last round…''
Zald couldn't hold the grin that creeped up to his face. Really, this kid…
Luke´s response came in the form of Zald´s great sword and his impenetrable guard being raised, ready for battle. A grin also appeared on his face as he got into position, drawing Star Platinum from its scabbard.
''Thank you, master…''
Luke said under his breath as he launched himself with everything he got at his teacher, for what he thought would be their last time clashing swords…
The orange hue of the late evening light washed over the beautiful flowery field, creating a majestic and stunning ambience amidst the colorful blanket that coated the clearing. At the center of the field, a lone tree sat there isolated. In its base, a mother caressed her son as he slept peacefully on her lap.
The soothing breeze kissed their skins, blowing her long-silky hair slightly as her gloved fingers trailed through her son´s snow-white locks.
Alfia looked fondly at his sleeping face. He was Meteria spitting image with his pure white hair, plump cheeks and small button nose. soft cute features that were so like her sister. She enjoyed seeing him sleeping without a worry in the world, imagining her sister in his place when they were only little children trying to survive in this cruel world.
Her bliss was shattered once he stirred awake and opened his eyes. Those red eyes, courtesy of that despicable, cowardly man…
If the bastard had not sacrificed himself trying to save his friends, she would have probably killed him anyway afterwards. Her hatred for him diminished over time but didn't vanish fully, as she reluctantly accepted that he was the man that her sister loved, even giving her the child that she and Alfia herself cherished. Even though a part of Alfia still blamed him for indirectly killing her with the pregnancy, another part knew that the real cause of Meteria´s demise was her love for Bell and that accursed sickness.
Alfia also had to give it to him though, for once in his pathetic life that weakling supporter didn't run away from danger. Going instead, head on against the dragon in a hopeless attempt of buying time for his fleeing comrades…
Foolish bastard…
''Mom…'' Bell said half-asleep. The woman clenched her fist, ready to punish him but stopped herself as she saw him looking up at her with teary eyes.
Tears started streaming down his face as he looked around confused. Alfia grabbed his face gently and made him face her while wiping his tears.
''What's wrong, you had a bad dream ?'' She asked calmly. Bell focused and seemed to recognize her and where they were.
"N-No, I-I saw a woman… a white haired woman just like me." Alfia's eyes opened slightly, listening intently at his words.
"She had blue eyes, and had a warm smile on her face when she saw me… I-I never met that woman before, but… I feel like I know her…" He said in a low voice. Alfia was trembling. Bell snapped out of his thoughts as something wet hit his forehead.
He looked up and saw the trails of tears that stained Alfia's cheeks as her lips curled up in a genuine smile. He eyed her with surprise, as she rarely broke her stoic and composed demeanor.
''Mom?'' He asked worried. The woman chuckled dryly as she shook her head.
''No… She is your mother, not me.''
His words died on his throat, his mouth hung open as looked at her in shock. Alfia continued to caress his hair, while wiping her tears.
''I don't know how, but the woman you saw in your dream was your mother…'' She said in a slightly trembling voice. Bell´s mind was still trying to understand what was happening and how as he no words came out of his mouth.
A couple of minutes passed, with the only sound being heard was that of the blowing wind in the flowery field and the swaying branches of the tree behind them. No one uttered a word, too engrossed in their own minds.
My mother… Was that really her? He had never seen her, as she had died after giving birth to him. He only heard about her from what the others told him; although he never dug too deep into it, only hearing bits here and there since he was little.
''We should head back home, the sun will go down soon…'' Alfia broke the silence as she stood up, helping the child to his feet as well. She offered her hand to him before they followed down the trail, Bell shook his head clearing his thoughts before taking her hand with a smile.
The walk back home was filled with a pleasant quietness, the sound of the wildlife and the crunch of their footsteps filling the ambience. Bell´s previous thoughts came back in full force as he walked holding his mom's hand. After some minutes of pondering, he spoke up.
''What was my mother like?'' He asked innocently. Alfia paused mid-step, having already steeled herself for that exact question.
''She had the purest soul in this world…'' She stated in a serene tone. Bell listened diligently, eager to hear about his mother from Alfia´s point of view.
''She cared deeply for everyone, even those that didn't deserve it; always believing that there was good inside everyone. She smiled despite her frail condition, and tried to lift everyone up, teaching them to see things from a good perspective… She was an angel. Fiercely believing in the prospect of living her life to its fullest despite depending on others, always thanking everyone and never cowering against the difficulties of life. '' Alfia spoke from her heart, unafraid to show her emotions.
''Although, she became a furious monster whenever one would eat one of her beloved sweets. Our old goddess Hera, and I had to beg on our knees for mercy once we unintentionally ate a cake that was being saved for her. I legitimately feared for my life that day… It's surprising that you didn't inherit her passion for sweets, she would be quite shocked to know you don't like them.'' Bell stroked his chin in thought.
''I heard once from nii-san that my name was because of you, how?'' Alfia smiled at him.
''Meteria wanted to name her child with something that resembled me, so she settled on your name, Bell, a name that would fit both genders. She based the name on the noise one my spells produce, resembling a bell playing… She used to play what-ifs, creating the most ridiculous scenarios. One day she asked me what I would name a child of mine, despite my claims that I wasn't interested in having one, she insisted that I actually love children. I said it would hypothetically be name Bell and so she took my suggestion and named you.'' Bell eyed her with newfound interest, hearing her story.
''You are so like her. Your white hair, your face, even your cheery personality and noble heart. Only your eyes differ from her… I want to gorge them out whenever I see them, they remind me so much of your despicable father!'' Her tone became dark at the end, making the boy flinch in fear. Alfia laughed at his reaction.
''I'm kidding, I would never do that. Although I do dislike them!'' His curiosity spiked as they started walking again.
''W-What about my father?'' He asked in a meekly voice, fearing her reaction. Her expression turned sour.
''Sigh… He was a coward. A huge pervert that liked to go alongside his degenerate god, Zeus, on lecherous actions against the opposite gender. One time I almost killed him when I caught him spying on me and your mother… He was a weak supporter who fled whenever things went south. I never knew what your mother saw in that man… At the very least he died with dignity, trying to save his friends from the Black Dragon.''
Bell looked disappointed at her statement. His father wasn´t the noble man he imagined him to be…
Silence fell between the two as they continued down the dirt road. Alfia kept stealing glances at her surrogate son.
Erebus' offer still weighed on her mind. Zald had a fair point, they wouldn't live for much longer, not at the rate their conditions deteriorated. The chaos god plan was a death sentence to them, they would burn their reputation to the ground, being seen as nothing more than enemies of Orario and the world. But… They might bring forth the next hero to face off against the dangers that loomed in the horizon.
She wasn't needed in this endeavor. Zald was a formidable warrior and was enough of a challenge to force Orario´s adventurers to grow stronger. She could live the rest of her days besides her son, Luke and even the annoying deities. A peaceful life, besides those she loved. She wanted nothing more than that, and when her time came, she would have died fulfilled and satisfied, surrounded by her family.
But…
What if he failed. What if it wasn't enough, the last hero never came to be, then what? Her selfish decision to stay with them would be for naught as the world crumbled. She would be powerless to save them, and they would be doomed to perish against the Black Dragon and Maquia. She would lose everything.
She didn't know what to do. She couldn't leave her son, he would never forgive her. She would never forgive herself… her sister wouldn't forgive her.
''Hey, there´s uncle Zald— Wait… Nii-san!'' Bell dragged her out of her dilemma as he pointed down the road. Zald stood tall in the middle of the path, carrying an unconscious elf on his back. Bell dashed towards them, while Alfia trailed behind in a calm pace.
''Uncle Zald, what happened! Is he alright!?'' The boy asked worriedly as he pointed at Luke´s unconscious form. The man nodded.
''He's only unconscious, don't worry he´ll be fine.'' He dismissed the kid´s worries. Alfia approached them, a frown present on her face.
''Did you really have to take it so far, you knew I wouldn't be there to heal him!'' She approached the unconscious elf, taking him and placing him gently on the ground; starting to heal his injuries.
''He wanted to go all out for one last time before I leave…'' Zald responded honestly. Bell perked up.
''Leave? What are you talking about uncle?'' He questioned, confused and a little concerned with the implications. Zald had a strange look before he responded.
''I´ll be leaving tomorrow morning on an important quest, one that can prevent the great evils from destroying the Lower World.'' He stated plainly. The boy gasped, shocked at the information.
''Quest? H-How, why?'' A small smile appeared on the man's face.
''I´ll help bring forth the next hero that will be strong enough to save this world. I´m sorry kid, but this will probably be our last time together.''
Bell didn't know how to respond, too engrossed in the sudden news. Uncle Zald was going on a mission, but why? What is happening?
As Bell was immersed in his mind, the man spoke up again.
''Alfia will stay with you… She was offered to come as well, but her assistance is not necessary. I'm more than qualified for it.'' The kid´s eye shot open, as panic took over him.
''Not you guys can´t go! You can´t…'' He said fearfully, dreading the idea of them leaving. Alfia stood up, having finished healing the elf. Her dilemma appears in the form of a pained expression on her face.
''I´m not sure whether to stay or not… Don´t get me wrong Bell, I would love to be alongside you, but… This quest´s success is vital to the survival of the whole world and everyone that lives in it… including you. So if I stay and Zald fails, then all would be lost and even I wouldn't be able to protect you or anyone else…'' Her voice was breaking, forcing herself to be truthful with Bell.
The air was heavy, a thick fog of sorrow and regret enveloped them as they awaited with bated breath for the next words. A minute passed before the silence was lifted.
''I´ll be your hero!'' Bell proclaimed, catching both adventurers off guard. The fear and uncertainty in his eyes were shunned by his newfound resolve.
''If I become the hero the world needs, then you don't need to go! I´ll be the hero you need, I swear!'' Pure resolve leaked out of his voice as he placed a fist on his chest.
Alfia's eyes were wide open in awe at his words.
This child… He really was like Meteria.
Her gaze switched from Bell, to the unconscious elf on the ground. A genuine smile crept onto her lips as she made her decision.
If these two could live their lives happily and chase their dreams without worrying about those world ending dangers, then she would die with a satisfied smile on her face.
''I´m touched by your resolve Bell, but we still have to try it… I´m going to join Zald on his journey, and I promise, i´ll create a world where you won´t need to pick up a sword!'' Bell shook his head as tears fell down at his feet.
''No matter, I will become a hero… That's my vow to you, mom!'' Alfia felt something warm in her chest, a pleasant feeling that she didn't dislike. For once, she wasn't mad at him seeing her as his mother.
A heavy hand landed on the kid´s shoulder. Bell looked up at his uncle, who sported a sly smile on his face.
''I'm counting on you kid. Whatever future awaits us, I want to see where your determination can take you… If that's the goal you've set for yourself, then chase it with all your might, no matter what others may say, prove them wrong and reach for the stars!'' Bell´s lips quivered at the encouraging words. He embraced the man´s leg tightly as he cried openly.
Zald patted his head, trying to soothe him. The whole moment lasted for a minute before Bell broke the embrace, a new, warm smile was present on the boy´s face. Alfia walked up to him, crouching on his level.
''We will see about that… Once we meet again, i´ll want to see you hailed as a great hero, one that will bring peace and security to the world, and inspire others while bringing a smile to their faces. A great hero that will write his name alongside the legends of the past and even surpass them… Be a hero, my son…'' She kissed his forehead, giving him the tightest and warmest hug she ever gave to him.
As the wholesome display of affection happened, a black haired elf jolted up awake. He looked around clueless, trying to situate himself and saw the crying, hugging pair.
"Okay… What did I miss?'' He asked dryly, breaking the touching moment between mother and son. His Sixth Sense flared once he saw Alfia looking at him over Bell's shoulder with murder in her mismatched eyes.
Zald facepalmed in the sidelines, shaking his head at Luke´s lack of tact by not reading the mood properly.
The elf never saw the blow coming as his world faded into black again.
''You got everything?'' Zeus asked, looking towards the three big backpacks Zald carried on his back. The man carried all their belongings without breaking a sweat.
''Yes… Although most of it is from a certain someone." He said, looking sideways at the emotional woman currently embracing her son. Zeus and Luke chuckled heartily.
''Are you sure you don't want to level up before you go? I'm sure you would get results in your task.'' The god inquired in a low voice, careful so Bell didn´t eavesdrop. Zald shook his head.
''No, i´m afraid if i do it would do more harm than good for them…'' The man was vague on purpose, trying to hide the quest details from the elf´s perceptive mind. Nevertheless, Zeus got the message. A level 8 might be a wall too big for Orario to overcome.
''On that same note… I'm surprised you are able to level up. Even after I updated your status after the battle with the Behemoth, you weren't able to gain a new level. Guess a quiet life in the mountains was all you needed after all!'' Zeus whispered between them, as the man shook his head in annoyance.
This was unheard off. Besides training Luke, he didn't fight any worthwhile foe to justify a level up. The falna system was a complex matter, as it was directly linked to one's soul, being affected by the user's emotions, ambitions and experiences. So, it may seem outlandish, but Zeus may be right on this one. Perhaps, his time living amongst them or training the boy…
Or maybe… Because he was marching to his death for their sake…
''You know I wouldn't hesitate to accompany you master… Why you can´t take me alongside you?'' Luke said in a serene voice, gaining their attention.
''We failed once, as such we should be the ones to fix our own mess… I won´t let you burden yourself with our failures. Besides, you still have them look after, don´t you?'' Luke shook his head, approaching the man.
''Your pride will be the end of you, you know that?… I´ll miss you.'' He extended his hand to his master. Zald clutched the hand with a smile.
''Don´t forget what we talked about yesterday. One´s end goal should be to die without regrets, got it?'' The elf nodded, taking his teachings to the heart.
''Goodbye old friend… I wish you good fortune on your journey.'' Zeus said, shaking hands with his child one last time.
''You take care, old man. Maybe one day we´ll share a drink one more time.'' Zald pondered as his god laughed.
''You can count me in. Even if we only meet in heaven, I´ll still hold it up for you… Preferably surrounded by beautiful women!'' The perverted god said, laughing loudly. He stopped once he felt an enormous killing intent. Zeus looked behind him fearfully. He was met with his worst nightmare.
Hera´s yandere mode.
Luke and Zald ignored his pleas for help as they walked towards the duo near the carriage, leaving him to his demise.
Bell seemed more calm as he clinged on Alfia´s leg, slowly coming to terms with their departure. Luke approached the boy, crouching down next to him.
''How are you faring, big guy?'' He flashed a warm smile to the boy, trying to soothe him. Bell let out a weak sob as he wiped his eyes.
''I'm fine, but… I wanted to go too…'' Bell said dejectedly. The elf patted his head
''That makes two of us… but it seems fate doesn't want it this way. But worry not, our grandparents and I, will stay with you no matter what!'' A mischievous smile appeared on his face.
''On the bright side, your mother won't be here to punch us anymore!'' He said playfully. Cold sweat dropped from his forehead as he felt her murderous glare besides Bell. He quickly apologized for his tomfoolery.
''I´m jesting, we love you Lady Alfia, even if you pack quite a punch…'' His playfulness disappeared completely as he embraced the woman.
''Thank you…for everything.'' Alfia was taken back from the sudden embrace but eventually returned it.
''You take care of them for me, you hear? And try to not get involved in trouble, I won't be around to heal you anymore… You have grown so much, your parents would be proud of you, Luke.'' She said in a motherly voice, embracing him tighter.
''We should get movin—'' Erebus was cut off. ''I wouldn't do that if I was you.'' Zald said seriously as he loaded the bags in the carriage. The god saw the sharp glare she sent his way. He made a hasty escape towards the driver seat, avoiding her ire… for now.
As they broke the embrace, their attention gathered on the approaching form of Hera, pulling her husband by the ear.
''I already apologized, can´t you let me go?'' Zeus pleaded as Hera twisted his ear.
''You never learn you old pervert, next time you'll regret being born!'' She released him, turning towards Alfia.
''Still the same crazy old hag… At least I won't have to tolerate your presence anymore.'' Alfia said in a plain tone. Hera barred her teeth ready to explode, but she contained herself, taking deep breaths before calming down.
''I don't want our last memories together to be another huge argument…'' She extended her hand, her lips curled in a small smile.
'' You may not like me, but I always cared deeply for you and your sister… Take care, my child.'' Alfia dropped her hostility as she clasped her hand.
''Good grief, I never thought I would see you being so kind to me. It looks more like a fever dream… Goodbye, Hera.'' She said sincerely, as they shook hands for the first and last time.
Zeus approached the mage, a defusing smile on his face as he clutched his injured ear.
''You take care my dear, i´ve always…'' He trailed off, sagging dejectedly once Alfia ignored him completely, picking up Bell in her arms.
''You´ll behave and listen to your grandparents, okay? I don't want to see you grow up to be an unmannered punk… You remember your promise right? I want to see that happen one day, and I'm sure your mother would too… Make us proud! Goodbye my son, take care.'' She said, pouring her heart out. Alfia pecked his cheek, giving Bell one last embrace before her departure.
Bell nodded as the waterworks opened again between them. The heartwarming moment lasted for a minute before they reluctantly let go.
''So long, you degenerate!'' Alfia said her goodbye to Zeus, as he brightened up by not being left out. She started making her way to the carriage, Zald already awaited at the backside. The man helped her up, as they readied to depart on their last endeavor.
''Thank you guys for the hospitality, see you around!'' Erebus said as he took the reins. The carriage moved at a steady pace, slowly getting further and further away.
Bell sat on top of Luke´s head as the two waved at the two adventurers, who waved back through the carriage back opening. Soon enough, they disappeared down the road. Tears dropped on the elf´s hair. He sighed, grabbing Bell´s hand.
''They are like heroes, you know? All those tales always begin with the hero going on an arduous path to help people and defeat evil, and in all of them, the heroes have to leave their loved ones behind. Choosing to fight for their safety, instead of being with them… So your mother and Zald are just like those cool heroes aren't they!?''
Bell looked wide-eyed at the elf he saw as his older brother. He was right! They were being heroes in their own right, just like his mother promised she would create a better world, the great heroes of the stories he liked fought for their loved ones.
Bell cleaned his face, as he showed his brother a big grin, one that he immediately returned.
''Hey, what about we go and play a little with the other children in the village? I heard that the girls like to pursue the 'cute rabbit kid' around… I'm grateful that I´m faster than them, or else my ears would pay the price!'' He said playful, reaping a laugh out of the boy as they walked towards the village.
The deities watched from the sidelines, satisfied smiles on their faces as the elf distracted the kid from adult troubles. The two were really like siblings, finding solace and support on each other.
The couple made their way back home, still thinking about their children´s last effort to bring forth salvation to the Lower World.
AN: Here´s another chapter for you guys, thanks for taking your time to read it!
I´ll try to maintain each chapter on an average of 12k to 15k words; mostly because that's where I find the balance between not too short and not too long. I won´t set up an update schedule, because life's a bitch and things will surely go south if I do. The best I can promise you guys is at least one chapter per month.
Pairings will be the following, but aren´t immutable, as I like to keep my options open.
