Sanosuke POV

I stared down at Chizuru, and I saw that her breathing was shallow I thought back to the promise I made to her when she was first attacked. "I'm so sorry Chizuru. I broke my promise," I said while holding her hand the others looked at us with worried faces, Saito was heating the metal rod to cauterize the bullet wound while Matsumoto dug the bullet out. I couldn't help but look away; there was so much blood.

"Sano."

I looked over to Shinpachi. "Yes?"

He had a grim look saying. "We need you to hold her down in case she struggles when we cauterize the wound."

I gently put my hands on her as Saito hands the hot iron rod to Matsumoto. He brings it to the wound and presses down hard, causing Chizuru to jerk upwards in pain with a scream. "Crap, Sano, hold her down!" Shinpachi yells.

"Chizuru, sweetie, I'm so sorry," I say with tears starting to form in my eyes as I hold her to the floor and she screams out in agony. After a few more minutes, she passed out and Matsumoto pulled away. "It's done, she'll be out till morning though." He cleaned up to leave.

"Thank you so much, Matsumoto-sensai. You too, Saito and Shinpachi." I carefully picked Chizuru up and brought her to our room. After changing her clothes, I laid her down in our bed. Then I leaned down and kissed her forehead. "Sweet dreams, Chizuru. I'll be back later"

Common room; Sano POV

As I entered, I looked at everyone before speaking. "I assume Shinpachi told you guys the news." they all nodded, so I continued, "Well, any idea where that bastard went? because I'm going to slowly murder him and send him to hell where he belongs."

Kondo was the one who spoke up, "They disappeared. We sent out two patrol teams and are waiting to hear back from them. In the meantime, calm down. Yelling like this isn't helping."

Kondo telling me to calm down made me more angry. "CALM DOWN?! THAT SON OF A BITCH RAPES MY FIANCE THEN SHOOTS HER AND YOU WANT ME TO CALM DO-" "SANOUSUKE!" I looked at a stern-faced Hijikata. "We know you're upset, but that does not mean you yell at the commander of the Shinsengumi. He is still your superior and he feels guilty enough having Chizuru take a bullet for him. Furthermore, we are all upset; Chizuru is like family to us and we do not like seeing all of these things happen to her. So sit the hell down and calm the fuck down. We'll find this bastard, don't you worry about that, and when we do, you can torture him all you want before we feed him to the furry corps. Understood?"

I do as he says and bow my head toward Kondo. "He's right; I'm sorry all of you." As I lift my head, I continue, "I was just so close to losing her; it's my job to protect her. But that's still no excuse-"

We were interrupted by a soldier knocking. "Excuse me, Commander, captains. I'm sorry, but we couldn't find anything on them after they disappeared."

Kondo spoke, "Thank you, you're dismissed."

After the soldier left, Hijikata spoke. "I suggest we all go to bed."

all of us stood up before everyone left they all gave me words of encouragement. I made my to our room and got into bed next to Chizuru hugging her as gently as possible. "I love you, Chizuru," I said before falling asleep.

The next day; Third person POV

Chizuru wakes up and tries to sit up, but the pain stops her. "Sanosuke, are you up?"

He stirs and looks at her. "Morning sweetie, how are you?"

"I'm in pain, but it's not that bad. Don't worry."

He leans down kissing her passionately she returns it. When they pull away, they're both out of breath. Chizuru looks up at him "What was that for? Not that I'm complaining."

He smiles down at her. "That was some of the love I have for you."

She makes a pouty face. "Just some?"

Sanosuke chuckles. "Yes well, unfortunately, I can't give you all my love until you heal." They stare at each other before they share another kiss until Sanosuke stands up. "You rest, I'll go get your breakfast." "Okay," she says laying back down. Sano's POV I headed to the kitchen to make her food and was surprised to see Souji and Saitou already making food "Good morning you two" they looked over at me and Saito handed me a tray of food at my confused stare Souji said, "we already made both of you a tray we thought you two would want to eat together, also tell her shes a badass for what she pulled last night and that we miss her." Saito nods agreeing with Souji while I smile "Thanks guys you're the best" I take the tray of food to our room setting it down while helping Chizuru sit up As she leans against me for support as we start to eat I speak "So Souji says your a badass for last night and everyone else is worried about you but knows youll get better soon". she laughs a little "good to know but how are you feeling about all this i know your worried about me." i sigh putting my bowl of rice down and look into her eyes "honestly when i heard you scream my heart stopped i thought you were dead, and when your body didn't start healing i got scared and angry all i wanted to do was stay by your side but also chase after the bastard that shot you, I froze not knowing what to do but the others kept me grounded and jumped into action helping me get you to saftey as well as taking care of your wound." she looks away from me "Im so sorry Sanosuke I should have been more careful all I thought was Kondo-san can't heal very well from a bullet but I could and before I knew it my body was moving faster then I could think" i grab her chin pulling her face towards me agian kissing her for a moment before breaking it "Chizuru listen to me im so proud of you for doing what you did so there's no reason to apologize because your always putting others before yourself and I love you for that so please dont ever change even if it does scare me to see you do it somtimes, just know that I will always be there to back you up and we'll fight side by side". she smiled before she kissed me "thank you Sanosuke I love you". "I love you too". we finish eating and I lay her back down watching as she falls asleep, I take our tray back to the kitchen then I head to the common room to meet everyone else as I get there I sit down and Kondo starts speaking "How is she sano" everyone turns to me I sigh "shes doing better than last night and seems fine but I'm still worried, where are we on finding Shiranui and the others?" Hijikata answers me "last night we sent Shimada and Yamazaki to look I also sent word to princess Sen about the attack last night hopfully we'll hear back soon so Shimada Yamazaki what did you find". Shimada spoke next "Sir we managed to track them back to Yamaguchi castle in the Choshu domain but sometime in the night they left the castle and we lost track of them". Kondo nods along "Good work you two that means our next job is to continue protecting the city and keep an eye out for them in case they return" Everyone nods "It sounds like they're running with their tails between their legs I say good riddance" Souji said while grining Heisuke spoke " yeah but i hope they come back so we can kill them" we all looked at heisuke with surprise since he's normally more cheerful "ahem" we turn back to Kondo "well we will keep looking as well as our regular duties everyone gear up and head out" all of us got up to leave and i headed to get my gear so i could start looking for the bastard that started all of this. I checked on Chizuru before I left she was sleeping peacefully, and then I left with my men swearing that I'd find him. A/N so I'm back and I've edited this story so hopefully it is a little better i also rewrote this chapter I have the next chapter planned and will update soon sorry for being gone for so long.
