Yui POV
Lunch time, some break time for the students, and some time for me to get a moment to myself before class starts again.
"I know Nezu said teaching was going to be a bit difficult, but this is out of my league…"
This "offer" Nezu proposed to me the other day is more like some sort of punishment. I don't how, but it feels like that. Four kids is one thing, but 25? That's a bit much for me to handle.
"Excuse me, Mrs. Akatani?" I heard my name being called and turned around to see what could be one of the UA staff. "You're looking for the teacher's lounge, right? I'll show you where it is if that's what you're wondering."
"Yes, please and thank you." I said, sounding relieved while a bit tired. "You're one of the UA teachers, right?"
"Yes, I'm Nemuri Kayama, also known as the R-Rated Hero: Midnight." She introduced herself to me.
I think I heard about her before. Her costume really sells the R-Rated theme with her name.
"So, you're substituting for Shota while he's recovering?" Kayama asked.
"Hm? Oh, Aizawa. Yes, until he recovers from his injuries, I'll be 1A's homeroom teacher."
"I see. I take it 1A is giving you a hard time?" She said jokingly.
"Eh, not really. They kinda actually act very well behaved, some of them at least. It's just so many kids and I've never done teaching before."
"You'll get the hang of it soon." She says and patted my shoulder.
We arrived at the teachers lounge and I was immediately greeted by the other school staff.
"Heyo! We got a special star here with us today!" Present Mic said in his DJ enthusiastic tone.
"Uh… hey, everyone." I introduced myself nervously. I figured I'd still be well known today, yet I'm still nervous as ever like in high school.
"Mrs. Akatani, it's a pleasure to have you here." Vlad, 1B's homeroom teacher, introduced himself to me. "We appreciate the help with saving 1A back at USJ."
"Oh, I didn't really do much other than saving my son and some of his classmates, so…"
"Don't worry about it. It's the least you could do for our students." Vlad said as he and the other staff bowed in respect to me.
"Oh, wow, uh… thanks." I tried to get my words out, but they came out as stutters instead.
"Okay, let's give her some space, people." Kayama said. "Mrs. Akatani is a substitute until Aizawa gets better. So remember to treat her with respect like we do here with the other UA staff."
The staff agreed and we continued with our lunch.
"Thank you, Ms. Midnight. I guess I'm still not used to all this recognition, even with my status." I said, feeling a little embarrassed.
"It's okay, really. Plus, you don't really have to use my hero name, since I don't really use yours."
"I guess so. I don't really use my own hero often as much, so I guess it's fair… Kayama..?"
We just sat there in silence as we gave weird looks to each other.
"Eh… you'll get used to it." She said trying to make it less weird.
"Maybe… So the Sports Festival is coming up." I said, trying to change the subject.
"Heck yeah it is!" Mic shouted as he came out of nowhere and sat between us. "And this year is interesting for the first years, especially for the hero course."
"I reckon that. A lot more students manage to pass the entrance exam this year." Said Snipe.
"I noticed that. Is there a reason why 1A has more students than 1B?" I asked.
"Oh, that? Well, because of the amount of students that managed to pass the entrance exam this year, Nezu set up some games for Aizawa and Vlad, and the loser would get more students." Kayama explained to me.
"And I won, triumphantly!" Vlad stood up with pride and with a big smug on his face. "Aizawa should've put more effort if wanted just one extra student."
"Truthfully, it was more about the loser getting the 25 students, and Aizawa lost since Nezu kept that part a secret from them." Kayama whispered to me.
Oh, that really explains a lot. That does sound like something Nezu would do too.
"Enough about our homeroom hero course teachers." Mic said, bringing the conversation back to the sports festival. "Looking at our roster here, a 1A student might come out on top. Maybe 1B even if they give their all."
"Oh trust me, Mic. My 1B students will most certainly give it their all during the festival. And they'll show how inferior 1A is compared to them!"
Vlad seems very pumped about the sports festival, mostly for how his class would perform during it.
"1B's not the only class." Power Loader then spoke up. "All the other first year courses are going to be after 1A during the festival."
"They are? Why?" I asked.
"It's most likely because of the USJ incident. The other classes probably are only after them just for jealousy or something." Kayama explained.
"I figured it was that. Not the first time this happened." I said with a sigh. "This happened when me and Kyojirou first came here, just so other students could get a chance to fight either of us. I'm kinda nervous about how Ryoichi and Kari will do during this."
"Those twins of yours are pretty good fighters." Present Mic said. "So they shouldn't have any problem with it."
"Oh, I'm not worried about that, it's just… well…"
Third Person POV
"You're not gonna train with us?" Kendo asked, sounding slightly shocked.
"Nope. Gonna do my own training for this." Said Kari.
"Not even gonna help us with strats against 1A?" Setsuna asked.
"Nope." Kari said as the girls were slightly upset. "I would join you guys, but I got my own things going on."
"I'm guessing it deals with your brother?"
Kari grinned and cracked her knuckles. "You know it! And he's probably already thinking on how to beat me, so I'm gonna train hard to beat him!" She said with full confidence of herself.
"Heh, I like this one's guts." Kamakiri said.
"Spooky…" Yanagi commented
That confidence was then cut short when there were noises coming outside the classroom.
"The hell?" Kari wondered what was going on.
A bunch of students were outside their classroom, but they weren't for the 1B students. She looked over and saw they were all in front of 1A's classroom.
"What's everyone doing in front of 1A?" Kari asked.
"Beats me." Setsuna joined her to see what's going on.
"Hey! I'm coming for you!" Tetsutetsu shouted from the crowd.
Kari wondered who he was shouting at. It was then Bakugo came out from the crowd, ignoring what Tetsutetsu was shouting and walked away. While walking, he noticed Kari staring at him and he stared back briefly before leaving.
"Jeez, wonder what he did to tick everyone off." Setsuna wondered.
"Knowing him, just some insults while talking down on them. But…" Kari trailed off. "He seems serious about this too."
"And you got all that just from staring at each other?"
"Eh?"
"I- nevermind."
Later in the day, Kari met up with her brother and Momo as they were waiting for their mom before they head home and she was getting caught up on what went down with Bakugo earlier.
"Oh, so that explains a lot earlier." Said Kari.
"Yeah. Just had to make everyone go against us." Said Ryoichi as he was slightly annoyed.
"He's always like that, isn't he?" Asked Momo.
"Considering we grew up in the same neighborhood…"
"And went to the same school…"
"Yes. Yes he is." The twins said in sync with each other.
"But, let's not worry about him. We got some training to do." Said Ryoichi.
"You're right. The sports festival is important for us, so it's best if we do our hardest during the time we have." Said Momo. "Say, maybe we can-"
"Actually, Momo…" Ryoichi interrupted her. "I was kinda thinking… maybe if we can train on our own?"
It got quiet and Momo looked a bit stunned to hear that. She looked at him with a confused look.
"Huh?"
"I've been thinking, and it might sound a bit selfish coming from me, but maybe we should do our own training?" Ryoichi suggested the idea to her. "I know it sounds odd coming from me in a way, but since the festival is something important for us.."
"So you're saying we should do our own training by ourselves so we can show off for this." Kari finished his thoughts for him.
"Oh, um, that's… fine." Momo said as she felt a bit hurt and tried to hide it. Ryoichi noticed this and tried to make her feel better.
"B-but we can still study together! If that's what you want to do."
"No, no, it's okay. It's just going to be odd doing this on our own in a way, you know?"
"I guess…" Ryoichi while scratching his head.
The silence was making things more weird between them as they didn't say a word to each other.
The silence broke when Momo's ride arrived, signaling her to go home.
"Well, here's my ride. I'll see you two tomorrow, and good luck with the training." Momo said with a small smile.
"Good luck with yours." Ryoichi said in return.
Momo got into her ride and went home. With the twins, Ryoichi had a small look of disappointment on his face and Kari noticed this.
"You okay bro?" Kari asked him.
"I'm fine. I just thought maybe if we train by ourselves, we wouldn't get in each other's way, y'know?" Ryoichi explained what he meant earlier.
"That's fair. Besides, it wouldn't be a fair fight for us if we're spying on each other during training." Kari said in a joking tone.
Ryoichi slowly looked at his sister with an unamused look. "Now why would I do that?"
"Cause you're a little sneaky snake and would try to use that as an advantage to win against me. Isn't that right?" Kari said with a teasing smug look.
"Me? Being a sneaky snake? Last I checked, that was you."
"Wanna bet?"
"Oh do I?"
The twins were in each other's faces now as they glared at each other while they had grins. While this was happening, Yui just arrived to take them home and saw them in their standoff.
"This year's sports festival is going to be interesting." Yui thought to herself.
For the next few weeks, the students have training for the sports festival. Either they've been training on their own, or train with others, everyone's giving their all so they can do well during the festival. The twins were training hard as Yui had them train separately from each other and made sure neither of them slacked off.
"You'll see, I'm going to win!" Both Ryoichi and Kari were thinking while motivating themselves.
With Momo, she's been studying and practicing her quirk along with her Bukijutsu skills. Although, while training, she didn't feel right in her mind at the moment. She stopped for a moment to have some self thinking to herself.
"What's wrong with me? I should be fine with Bukijutsu, but I feel like I progressed backwards." She thought to herself as she felt upset.
"Momo, dear. Don't you think you deserve a break now? I made some tea for you." Momo's mother called her and brought some tea with her.
"Oh, thank you, mother. I need some to calm my mind." Momo stopped training for a moment and sat down to drink some tea with her mother.
"You seem really tense for the sports festival. It must be important for you to train this hard."
"It is. It's where we get to show ourselves to other pro heroes when we get picked for internships.
"Hm, I see. But, if you don't mind me asking, why not train with Ryoichi? You two usually do stuff like this together." Her mother asked.
Momo got a bit flustered and maintained her composure for a bit. "Normally, we would, but Ryoichi came up with the idea to train by ourselves." She explained.
"Ah, so that way each of you can show how far you've come during the festival."
"That is the idea, yes."
"That actually makes sense. Though I have noticed you seem to be distracted by something while training. Is there something on your mind?"
"I'm just… nervous about how I'll do during the festival." Momo said, trying to avoid the subject.
"Are you sure? You know you can tell me anything if anything's wrong."
Momo wanted to tell her mother how she really felt, but she wanted to show how well she can do on her own. Who does she want to prove it to? She doesn't know herself, but it is what's driving her to do her best during the festival.
"I'm fine, really. There's nothing to worry about."
"If that's what you think, I'll leave you to your training. Just remember to not be too hard on yourself and we're here if you need any help."
"Thank you, mom. I'll do my best." Momo said before Yumi left her alone to continue her training.
While training, Momo has been thinking back on her mother's words. She didn't mind getting some help while training. With all that has happened recently during school, mostly with the USJ incident, she wanted to improve her skills so she'll be ready in case something like that happens again.
But that wasn't the only thing. Ever since she reunited with Ryoichi and Kari, she had this feeling of self doubt whenever she notices the skill gap between her and them.
"Those twins, they really are amazing. Especially Ryoichi." Momo said with a small blush. "But, they have been improving their skills by a lot so quickly, it feels like I'm falling behind." Momo felt a bit frustrated and some self doubt when that came to mind. Though, he didn't let that get to her head and remained focused.
"I shouldn't let that hold me back. I'll use my training now to catch up with them." She told herself as she pumped herself up.
Momo continues training her skills and her quirk for the following weeks. She was determined to do her best, but some self doubt was slowly growing over her. It shouldn't be anything too bothersome for her, right?
