Chapter 8 – Sentinel
The chilly morning air was still and peaceful as the world paused to savor the tranquility of dawn. But soon, a boy in dark blue and orange burst into the clearing, shouting and leaping erratically between trees. However, he tripped on an exposed root and faceplanted with a thud.
"Am I late?" he groaned, pushing himself up and spotting another young ninja. The boy had spiky white hair and wore a half mask covering his face in black. He appeared uninterested as he leaned against the tree. He side-eyed the clumsy boy and replied, "Yes, you're late. They say being a ninja means following rules, you know?"
"There was an elderly woman in need of assistance!" the clumsy boy protested incredulously, narrowing his eyes, "And I think some dirt got in my eye."
The masked boy almost rolled his eyes, "That unsurprisingly sounds like an excuse."
"Easy Kakashi, I'm sure Obito meant well," said a tall man standing near them, smiling vibrantly. Jaw-length yellow bangs were framing either side of his rather handsome face. "You were helping an old lady cross the road?"
"Yeah, I carried her bags and everything!"
But Kakashi remained stern, "Minato Sensei, you're too nice to him. We already established that Shinobi who break the rules are lowlifes, right?"
Before tensions could escalate, their female team member stepped in. She had straight brown hair that fell below her chin in a bob cut that complemented her brown eyes. Purple rectangles marked across both her cheeks, "Guys, this is a team effort. Let's zero down on what we want to accomplish, okay?"
Kakashi softened. "Rin, you are far too forgiving. Today's important, remember?"
"It is?" Obito asked.
"Kakashi made jounin, like me," Minato explained.
Rin's cheeks flushed as she extended a box to him, "I put together a specialized first aid kit for you."
Kakashi took the box and nodded thanks before turning expectantly to Obito, who raised his hands.
"I didn't get you anything!"
Undaunted, Kakashi withdrew his hand. "I expected as much."
"I can't believe you made jounin!" Obito snorted.
"Calm down..."
Their bickering faded as the forest stilled, but tensions lingered beneath the surface.
Kakashi thought he heard crows cawing in the distance as the morning sun brightened. He pushed hard to erase the thought and kept moving forward.
Sunlight danced on Minato's elaborate map as it passed through the trees. The three young ninjas gathered around him, leaning in closer as they fixed their eyes on the complex map.
"Here is the border," Minato began as he traced the thin, winding red line that snaked across the map with his index finger.
"It was the dividing line between two territories: the Fire Country and The Earth Country. Earth has boldly extended its forces beyond this line, launching a swift and daring invasion of Konohagakure. A thousand ninjas from Iwagakure are now reinforcing their front line."
He paused, looking at each of his students, before continuing, "This," he pointed, "is Kannabi Bridge. We share a fragile border with Iwagakure. We should have acted sooner. Their swift progress speaks of a well-coordinated reinforcement system."
Minato let his gaze roam over his Team, "We don't have an army that fights them head-on. We are a highly trained sabotage team. We aim to sneak into enemy territory, destroy the bridge, and cut off their access to reinforcements. As soon as we've finished, we'll be leaving."
Kakashi nodded and blinked, "So it's an infiltration mission?"
"Exactly," Minato confirmed. "While your team destroys the bridge, I will divert their attention from you independently."
Obito nodded, "Last time, we were dealing with a lone enemy. This time, they won't be alone. We need to prepare ourselves."
"Agreed... Let's get going!" Kakashi's command cut through the fresh morning air.
As Kakashi departed, Obito and Rin cautiously proceeded through the dense forest. Each step was muted by the thick layers of decaying foliage, mossy boulders, and scattered branches, creating a soft and gentle carpet underfoot.
The stillness of the air was eerie and unsettling. Obito was unprepared for this assignment; their previous missions had not been as dangerous as this one. He stole a glance at Rin, who was walking alongside him.
He was psyching himself up just for her sake.
Suddenly, an ominous figure popped up from the ground, brandishing a sharp dagger in Obito's direction. The young boy recoiled in shock, unsure of how to react in the face of danger. His only reflex was to shield Rin, who was taken aback as she gasped in surprise.
Fortunately, Minato appeared and swiftly dispatched the attacker, who vanished into a swirling cloud of mist.
As he disappeared, he muttered cryptically to Obito, "Don't let your guard down," causing the boy's eyes to brim with tears, "alright!"
A young ninja was moving on calculated silence at another corner in the woods.
Kakashi spotted an enemy crouched in a tree in front of him. His heart pounded as he charged forward. The air pulsed and crackled around them as jagged strands of lightning danced across the surface of the glowing orb in Kakashi's palm. He rammed the Chidori into the enemy's torso with clenched teeth, and the figure dissolved into shards of shadow.
"A clone," Kakashi muttered. "Never mind. On to the next one!"
Quickly, Kakashi sought out each opponent and pierced them with the Chidori. With each hit, the target went up in smoke. As he gritted his teeth and cut down the eighteenth clone, his instincts told him that the real Shinobi was nearby. Though he was nervous, he was determined. In swift velocity, he stormed at the enemy.
"Don't push your luck, kid!" the Iwa ninja warned.
Just before the Chidori hit, Minato flashed at Kakashi's side and pulled him aside while kicking the enemy ninja—who was sent flying to the ground. But not before the enemy's blade grazed Kakashi's ribs, drawing blood. In a flash, Minato returned the white-haired boy to Obito and Rin, who were waiting.
"The enemy's marked now," Minato said, dropping his bag of provisions. Then he vanished again. Minato reappeared behind the enemy before the bag touched the ground—pressing a razor-sharp kunai against his throat.
The Iwa ninja trembled, eyes wide with fear. "This can't be... you're the Yellow Flash of Konoha! We were ordered to flee on sight..."
In one swift motion, Minato slit his throat. A murder of crows erupted above them, cawing as they took to the sky.
They were now resting because Kakashi was injured, and Rin knelt at his side, tending to his wound.
Minato and Obito sat aside, the sheltering trees casting dancing leaf shadows across their forms as Kakashi hunched over, attempting to disregard the piercing pain as Rin cast a medical jutsu to treat his injuries.
"I know teamwork is important," Obito said, crossing his arms and looking down before facing his Sensei. "But Kakashi continually criticizes me and accuses me of lacking discipline..."
Minato looked at the boy, who was struggling to articulate his thoughts. After contemplating, the yellow-haired jounin decided to alleviate the situation, "Kakashi is the son of the legendary White Fang, Sakumo-san."
Obito's eyes glazed over, recalling the warrior who died defending the village.
"He sees you as lacking because he grew up in the shadow of a genius."
"Oh yeah, the White Fang! Wasn't he that awesome hero who protected the village?"
Minato gave a nod. "A wonderful man. Everyone respected him until that incident..."
"What incident?"
"Perhaps I shouldn't say, but you're Kakashi's teammate..." Minato paused before continuing solemnly.
Obito waited anxiously, glancing at Kakashi, who was still receiving treatment, before turning his attention back to his Sensei.
"Sakumo-san sacrificed a mission to save his Team. The losses devastated the village. All blamed him, including the comrades he saved, and then, he took his own life. Try to understand Kakashi, Obito," Minato urged gently. "He means well."
Obito's stomach churned. He was now able to see Kakashi from a new perspective.
After a while had passed, there was a rigid stillness around the group while Rin attended to Kakashi's wounds.
Kakashi leaned against a tree, his face contorted in pain from the wound. Rin was bandaging it while Obito looked with a disapproving expression on his face. Minato surveyed their surroundings and realized he needed to make a decision.
"Kakashi's wound is serious," Minato said, breaking the silence. "We'll retreat and regroup."
"I'm fine!" Kakashi replied, but his voice betrayed the pain he was trying to hide.
"No, you're not!" Obito said as he blew a noisy breath. "And all because you ignored sensei's warnings and stormed off!"
"I don't need to listen to that," Kakashi muttered, maintaining an even tone, "not from the "Uchiha elite" who was whining in fear back there."
"I got some dust in my eye and started watering, that's all!"
"Do you know the 25th rule of shinobi conduct? The rule says that a ninja mustn't show tears!"
"That's enough, you two!" Minato finally intervened as he glared at Kakashi.
"Kakashi, rules, and regulations are indeed important. But that isn't all. Didn't I teach you? There are times when the situation requires spontaneous reactions against the enemy."
"But Sensei..." Kakashi began to protest, but he was interrupted.
"You too, Obito!" Minato locked eyes with him. "It's impossible for dust to get into your eyes if you wear goggles. If you're going to plead for self-control, don't just do it with words. Act strongly, too. And one more thing..."
Minato's gaze softened as he turned back to Kakashi. "Kakashi... It would be best if you didn't use that jutsu anymore. From what I could see, your attack undoubtedly has power and speed, but you're moving too fast to detect the opponent's counterattack. It's still an imperfect jutsu. Before we part, I want to tell you something. For a ninja, the most important thing is teamwork."
Kakashi's chin dropped to his chest at hearing Minato's words. Obito closed his eyes and pulled in an expansive breath.
In the silence that followed, the three figures seemed to internalize the weight of their Sensei's words.
The mood was tight as the Team roused themselves from their slumber in the early morning. After weighing various options, Minato decided to reiterate a strategic separation plan.
"I will engage the enemy's attention alone to increase our chances of success," he informed his pupils. "While they are distracted, the three of you can infiltrate and destroy the bridge without being detected."
Minato gathered his gear as the sun crept over the hills. His students watched as he readied himself for the unknown dangers ahead.
"Stay vigilant and fulfill your roles," Minato instructed them resolutely.
In a flurry of leaves, their teacher vanished into the morning mist. The pupils stood in silence for a moment, feeling his absence deeply. Finally, Kakashi broke the stillness.
"You heard Sensei, we have a mission to accomplish," he declared, his voice deep and steady, snapping them out of their trance. "Let's proceed with caution and adhere to the plan."
Obito and Rin gave curt nods. The three fledgling ninjas embarked on their journey; their primary objective was to demolish the vital bridge.
After days of trekking through dense forests and across winding rivers, the group drew closer to their goal.
Wildflower-sown grass waved at them as they passed as though welcoming them, and the sound of the rushing river almost drowned out the crunch of a twig breaking from the thicket as they crossed a small, rocky creek.
Kakashi's senses heightened, his ears catching a faint rustling in the hanging bamboo nearby that did not match the natural sounds of the forest. He warned Rin and Obito of possible danger with a subtle hand signal. The genin tensed, guarding up.
Suddenly, the bamboo above exploded as hidden blades severed them. Obito reacted instantly, hands flying through familiar signs. "Katon: Gokakyou No Jutsu!" he yelled, exhaling a flaming inferno that incinerated the falling spears before they hit the water.
On the opposite bank, the bamboo rattled unnaturally. A ninja with a wild afro leaped out, underestimating the inexperienced genin. But Kakashi was ready, his Sensei's unique Kunai in hand.
Steel flashed as Kakashi and the enemy ninja clashed, precariously balancing as they battled across the bamboo stalks. Neither gave ground until finally breaking apart, chests heaving.
Obito was so preoccupied with watching Kakashi that he did not realize Rin was being targeted. Her scream pierced the air. Heart lurching, Obito whirled to see an invisible force snatch a terrified Rin. She thrashed but went limp as the stealth ninja surfaced, clutching her unconscious body.
"We're leaving with this one," the enemy called out mockingly as his partner, the afro man, broke free from the fight with Kakashi and stood on the side, leering.
Obito staggered back, hands clenching into fists. "Damn it!" He started to chase, but Kakashi's sharp voice stopped him.
"Don't pursue them!" Kakashi barred Obito's path, emotionless, despite their teammate's abduction. The Iwa ninjas now had disappeared with Rin.
Obito's eyes welled up with tears as he shook, "How can you abandon Rin when she needs us?"
Kakashi stayed resolute, but doubt flickered in his dark eyes. The mission objective warred with his loyalty. Rin's life hung in the balance.
On the open battlefield, Kakashi and Obito confronted one another with an almost palpable level of tension between them.
"Wait! Damn it! What did you mean?"
"I told you not to go after them," Kakashi replied, his posture rigid.
"Do you understand the implications of what you said?" Obito muttered; he frowned as he clenched his fists tightly.
"Yes...I do." Kakashi took a shaky breath. "You and I will continue this mission."
"And Rin?" Obito's voice rolled over at her name. "What about Rin?!"
"Rin will come later. The enemy wants to keep their cards hidden. They will wait to execute her. Fortunately, Rin is a medical ninja. Even as a prisoner, she'll be treated respectfully if useful to them. The problem arises when the enemy gets wind of our strategy. That would complicate our mission considerably."
Disbelieved, Obito stepped closer, his eyes glowing with anger, "These are just guesses! What if you're wrong? Rin's life is more important than any mission!"
"A ninja must prioritize the mission, even at the expense of comrades. That's the rule," Kakashi replied, his tone distant. "Failure means prolonging the war and costing more lives."
"That's pure speculation! And for that speculation, you'd abandon someone who fought alongside us? Rin saved us both with her medical ninjutsu! Without her, we wouldn't be here!"
"It was Rin's choice to do her duty."
"I don't like you after all," Obito said, a stiff smile forming before frustration emerged again.
"I don't care," Kakashi said casually, his voice sharp. "I'm the captain. You will obey me. We have a chain of command for a reason, Obito. It keeps the Team together and keeps us focused. Your strength isn't in question. I was chosen as captain because of my abilities, my judgment."
"You're the strongest among us, strong enough to save her, right?"
"If you let emotions cloud your judgment, even for a moment, you'll jeopardize the mission. You'll regret it. That's why we have rules, Obito—no attachments."
"Rin cared about you. She gave you that medical kit, sewed in a protective amulet."
"Didn't I tell you, Obito? Useless things only get in the way."
"Useless?"
"Yes, useless," Kakashi reiterated. "A ninja needs tools, not emotions. Emotions are a hindrance."
Obito sighed. "Fine. We've always been like oil and water. I'll rescue Rin myself."
"You don't understand the consequences of breaking rules!"
"I believe your father was a hero!"
Kakashi was taken aback, gasping faintly as his eyes widened at Obito's comment.
"I will be trash anyway, so I break the rules. And if that doesn't make me a true ninja...Then I'll crush this so-called 'ninja'!"
With that, Obito leaped into the trees, heading for Rin.
Obito shifted his weight from foot to foot nervously. He took a deep, shuddering breath to steady his trembling hands.
"I found them...calm down...I can do this," he muttered, voice pitching with uncertainty. He slapped his cheeks a few times, the sharp sound cutting through the buzzing tension.
Kakkō knelt before Rin, studying her face intently as she sat motionless under his genjutsu. Her glazed eyes stared straight ahead at the cave wall, oblivious to her surroundings. His comrade, Taiseki, stood beside them, waiting for the fog in their uncertainty to lift.
The afro-haired man scowled, frustrated that his technique had failed to break her.
"Why hasn't she cracked yet?"
The sound of skin being slapped at the cave entrance made them both look up.
Taiseki smirked, "I'll go take care of it. Keep yourself focused on the genjutsu."
Kakkō nodded, turning his attention back to Rin. Her vacant expression taunted him—whatever secrets hid in her mind, they remained locked away.
Taiseki slipped out, moving stealthily toward the source of the noise. Kakkō tuned out the outside distraction, renewing his efforts to pierce through Rin's mental defenses.
The cunning Taiseki muttered to himself, "Meisaigakure no Jutsu."
The oblivious Obito nodded, taking a deep breath to steady his nerves, and resolved, "All right... Here I go!"
Taiseki, however, made a surprise appearance on the branch, startling Obito. "Go where?"
Obito was shocked; his movements were jerky when Taiseki lunged forward, a deadly Kunai aimed at him. But to his surprise, Kakashi intervened just as the blade could almost reach the Uchiha's skin. His White Chakra Blade met Taiseki's chest instead, resulting in a thin gash across his shirt.
Taiseki collapsed on the branch, blood oozing from the gash Kakashi's blade had torn across his chest. Groggy, the Iwa ninja forced himself up with a grunt. He had underestimated these young Konoha shinobi, but the battle was far from over.
Obito's hands shook so badly that he could barely stand. His throat was tight, and his vision blurred with tears. He finally turned to Kakashi, trembling.
"You came for me?" he whispered. Kakashi's expression remained hard as stone. "As if I'd abandon a crybaby like you."
The insult barely registered with Obito, overwhelmed by gratitude. Kakashi had saved him again, even after all their arguments.
Taiseki studied the young ninja who had wounded him—the distinctive white hair and the White Chakra Blade. Realization dawned in his widening eyes.
"You must be Sakumo…the White Fang," Taiseki rasped. Fear tinged his voice.
Kakashi stepped forward, his expression a mask of ice. His voice was cold and hard as he spoke.
"This blade belonged to my father and is now mine."
Obito watched his teammate with dawning awe. At this moment, Kakashi seemed like every inch his father's son—the image of Konoha's legendary White Fang.
However, relief washed over Taiseki's face. He then made a few hand seals to initiate the camouflage jutsu again, "Then I don't have to worry about you," he growled. His form shimmered out of sight.
Kakashi's brow furrowed, but he retained perfect focus. "He's erased his scent. We'll have to track him by sound and movement."
Obito blinked, peering around anxiously through his goggles. "Where did he go?"
"Obito, behind you!" Kakashi yelled. He rushed to Obito and shielded the goggle-eyed boy. Obito whirled, but he was too slow. As Taiseki reappeared, his Kunai slashed viciously across Kakashi's left eye.
"Kakashi!" Obito shouted, his voice cracking. With trembling hands, he gripped his teammate's shoulder as blood dripped from Kakashi's mutilated eye, pooling on the bark below.
Obito's gaze darted around the branches, legs weak—searching futilely for their invisible foe. Taiseki had melded perfectly into the surroundings again.
"He's good..." Kakashi grunted through clenched teeth. His breaths came in short, pained gasps.
Obito's eyes started to well up with tears. Because of his carelessness, Kakashi had now lost an eye.
"Crying already? I'm not dead yet." Kakashi said drily, trying to soothe Obito.
Obito flinched, the words hitting their mark. His hands curled into fists as memories of Sensei's comments came up in his mind. Was he still just a failure and a fraud?
No. He couldn't fail Kakashi now. As long as he breathed, he would protect his comrade. Uchiha Obito was done being a useless deadweight. The raging storm now had transformed into a tranquil whisper of breeze.
Obito honed his senses. As Taiseki's killing blow came whooshing toward Kakashi's blind side, Obito twisted and met it with his own Kunai.
"Die!" He said coldly, his brows drawn and jaw tightened.
The Kunai sank deep into invisible flesh.
Taiseki's camouflage melted away as he collapsed with a gurgling gasp, eyes wide with shock. Obito and Kakashi locked gazes.
"Wh-Why...? There's no way you can see..." His own choking, blood-gushing fit silenced his incredulous tone. The only response was the magnificent flare of red light in Obito's eyes.
Kakashi recoiled at the sight, "Obito... You...! What is that eye...?"
"This time... I'll protect my comrade!"
"That is…" Kakashi stuttered, astonished. But Obito, with newfound confidence, replied, "Yeah... I guess this is the Sharingan. I can now see the movement and flow of chakra. Are you all right, Kakashi?"
Kakashi nodded, forcing a weak smile, "Yeah. It looks like I lost my left eye, but I have the kit Rin gave me. I can use it for emergency first-aid. We're going to save Rin immediately!"
Rough stone walls with little tree roots were poking through the cracks inside the cave near Kannabi Bridge. Kakashi, left eye now bandaged—and Obito—could hear the whistling of the wind through cracks in the stone inside the cave; some stalagmites were protruding on the cold, dark floor.
A frustrated voice rippled through as Kakkō—observing Rin, commented, "You're surprisingly stubborn."
Now, they both were inside the cave, and the tension heightened as Obito scrutinized the chakra movement inside Rin's body.
"Rin's chakra flow is different from us," the goggle-eyed boy commented.
"She is probably under a genjutsu. They wasted no time trying to gain intel from her," Kakashi observed.
But Kakkō soon realized the two boys—the girl's companions—were now standing behind him. It also meant that Taiseki had been defeated. His disdainful voice hung in the air, "Hmm... you can't count on people these days."
Kakkō stood up and took an offensive stance, raising both his hands, which were equipped with double short blades. He lunged, his swords gleaming, hungry for blood. Obito's Sharingan tracked the strike, allowing him to duck just in time. He fell back, used his hands as leverage, and smashed both legs onto Kakkō's shoulders to impede his movement.
Kakashi seized the opening in the same breath, leaped, and slashed his white chakra blade through Kakkō's right shoulder as his head leveled down. The man fell and was knocked out cold.
The boys rushed to Rin. Kakashi swiftly released the genjutsu that was binding her with a kai.
But their reunion was short-lived.
"You two make a good team," Kakkō sneered, clutching his bleeding shoulder. It looked like it was all an act.
"But you're still just kids." His hands flashed through seals. "And now, you're right where I want you."
Kakkō patted the ground, "Doton: Iwayado Kuzushi!"
The earth rumbled ominously. Stones rained down as Kakkō's jutsu shook the cave foundations.
"Run!" Obito shouted over the escalating din. They scrambled desperately towards the exit. A thunderous crack resounded behind them. Kakashi stumbled and fell. Obito whirled to see a massive boulder breaking free above his friend. He dove, shoving Kakashi clear.
The boulder crashed down, the force reverberating through the cave. Then silence.
Rin's shriek pierced the quiet. "Obito!"
She and Kakashi scrambled to the rubble, frantically clearing stones. Obito lay bloody and crushed beneath the massive boulder. His breathing came in ragged gasps as he whispered, "Are you both...alright?"
Kakashi grasped at the boulder, straining with all his might, but it didn't budge. "Just hang on!" he choked out. But they both knew it was futile.
Tears glistened as they streamed down Kakashi's dirt-smudged face. "This is all my fault," he cried, trembling like the rain. "I should have listened to you. If I decided to save Rin first and foremost, we could have avoided getting into the cave, and none of these would have happened…"
He trailed off as sobs wracked his body. If only he had been a true comrade from the start. If only he had realized rules were not everything.
There were no second chances now.
Rin gripped Obito's hand, desperately working to stem the bleeding despite the hopelessness of it. "We can't lose you, Obito!" she wept.
Obito blinked through the pain, a sudden memory surfacing. "Kakashi...I never got you...a gift," he rasped weakly, his pitch low. "For making jounin..."
Kakashi's head snapped up, eyes wide.
"No matter what everyone says, you'll be a great jounin. I'm giving you...my eye."
His gaze shifted to Rin. "Please...transplant it into Kakashi. I may not be able to get out of this cave, but... I'll become your eye and... see the future...for you…"
Rin nodded, wiping her tears to focus. If it were Obito's last request, she would honor it.
Hideous sorrow ate away in Kakashi's chest; his left vision was restored. But for now, he would ignore it and face the remaining enemy alone. Now, he was standing before the man who debilitated his best friend. In a hole beside him, Rin and a half-crushed Obito were waiting for him. He had to succeed.
"How stubborn... You're still alive, huh? But you're just a kid, after all," he commented, spreading his fists to wield his double blades. As he charged, he saw tears streaming down the boy's face.
"What's a ninja crying for?" he spat. "Come on, crybaby! Let's settle this!"
But even he could notice the resolve in Kakashi's eyes; the boy seemed different and more intimidating this time. A ball of lightning lit up inside his palm—a pulsating field of electric colors casting peculiar shadows inside the stony cave grounds.
"Obito, this is the jutsu you helped me perfect with your eye...I…I will protect Rin!"
The two ninjas soon clashed.
Above them, there was the sound of a squashy surface being punched. A muffled thud rang through the air as a fist collided with it, accompanied by a wet squelching sound. Rin looked up uncomfortably and saw a splatter of thick, viscous red liquid bursting into tiny droplets, which fell onto her and Obito—a rain of blood.
Rin's heart pounded rapidly, and she watched the blood fall onto the Uchiha's face. Then she looked up from inside the hole. From the surface, Kakkō emerged.
Rin's eyes widened, the threat of danger looming with the Iwa nin—but she was also experienced enough to notice the man's dilated, petrified irises.
"Kakashi?" She whispered, and Kakashi emerged from behind Kakkō's corpse—which had a hole where his heart should have been—dripping with blood.
Obito smiled slightly, knowing his best friend had succeeded, and coughed, tasting iron. "Now go...get to safety. More enemies...are coming..."
It turned out that he was correct; the outside assaults from the troops belonging to Iwa were causing the surface that Kakashi was standing on to collapse. He was able to hear the commotion coming from outside. He and Rin had to get out of there as soon as possible, or they would be buried together.
Kakashi put out his hand to grab Rin and pull her out. She peered down at the Uchiha below her as she felt herself hoisted to the surface.
"Obito.." she sobbed, but Obito was smiling, resigned.
Obito was left alone beneath the boulder as the light in the hole began to decrease, gradually closing in on him and enveloping him in darkness as the sound of the falling stones slowly faded away.
'Just when Kakashi and I were starting to get along. I couldn't tell Rin that I...loved her. I wish I could've spent more time with everyone."
The sound of approaching enemies resonated through the caves.
Kakashi's expression darkened as he gripped Rin's shoulders, his eyes focusing on the cave entrance, "You have to go. I promised Obito I'd protect you, no matter what."
His chin lowered to the chest; he turned left to look at Rin, eyes clouded with guilt. "Rin, Obito loved you...in a way I never could. You meant the world to him. So go!"
Rin's eyes filled with fresh tears. "Then, Kakashi! You should know my feelings for you..."
He silenced her confession with a shake of his head, his voice exuding a sense of closure, "I—I tried to abandon you... I'm nothing but scum. Rin, leave!"
With that, Kakashi turned to face the enemies descending upon them. Sensei's Kunai glinted as he prepared to make his stand, granting Rin time to escape.
Kakashi charged, running head-on towards the cave opening, towards the blinding light, to where Obito's eye could see the future…
Kakashi jolted awake, emerging from the nightmare. Moonlight bathed the room in a soft glow, shadows stretching across the walls. He sat up in his bed, slowly becoming aware of his surroundings, but his heart still raced, carrying the remnants of the intense dream.
Exhaling deeply, he rose from his futon, careful not to disturb his sleeping comrades. They had a long day ahead in Iwagakure. As he prepared for the morning, the dark visions of the past still clung to the edges of his mind.
The night air brushed against his sweaty forehead, bringing a cool, calming sensation. His senses began to adjust to the newfound tranquility. His racing heart gradually steadied, and he felt the weight of the dream slowly lifting.
He turned his gaze to the figure in the room, a silhouette amidst the dim light. The girl lay there, her midnight hair splayed across the pillow, her features softened in sleep. Kakashi's eyes lingered on her momentarily, his thoughts a tumultuous sea.
Something from his past had crawled to the surface—something he had once buried in the deepest corner of his mind.
He noticed Kakashi's unmistakable burst of white hair in a second-story window of a humble inn as he turned down an alley. Itachi melted back into the shadows, having found their lair.
Patience and preparation were vital. When the moment came, his strike would be swift and precise. He would keep vigil, for now, waiting for the ideal opportunity to present itself. The hunt was still on.
Later, after a hearty breakfast of steamed rice, miso soup, and grilled fish at the inn's ryokan, they met Kamiya in the Genkan area. Kamiya, almost as tall as Kakashi, had long, spiky red hair, light green eyes, pale skin, and a scar that added a ruggedness to his boyish good looks.
With nods and greetings exchanged, Kamiya led them out of the inn. They walked along narrow, winding streets that clung to the cliffside. A merchant displayed weapons and armor, and children played hide-and-seek while an Iwa Shinobi patrolled nearby.
Approaching the tallest building, they noticed two Tsuchikage guards on a rooftop overseeing the village and two more guarding the Earth tower's entrance. Climbing the winding stairs of the towers, one of Shino's Kikaichuu flew out from the tower's base, scouting through a maze of streets and buildings, flying closer to the towering Earth Kanji sign.
In the distance, rocky mountains lay to the north, a river to the south, and compact, bullet-shaped buildings comprised shops, inns, and housing areas.
The Tsuchikage's office exuded solemnity, illuminated by the soft, flickering glow of candles that cast dancing shadows on the cold, stone walls. Heavy maroon curtains were drawn across arched windows at the room's rear, shrouding it in a muted ambiance.
Seated behind a colossal wooden desk hewn from stone, the Tsuchikage, an older man with a balding, liver-spotted head, awaited their arrival.
Kakashi stepped forward, accompanied by his Team and Kamiya, as they approached the Tsuchikage.
"Thank you for granting us an audience, sir," Kakashi said. The rest of Team Eight stood respectfully behind him._
"Allow me to introduce my Team: Aburame Shino, the tall one; Inuzuka Kiba, with the distinctive face tattoo; and Hyuuga Hinata, recognized by her white eyes. We specialize in tracking missions."
The Tsuchikage, an astute observer, acknowledged their introductions with a nod. "A Hyuuga. As I presumed. They informed me of your delayed arrival yesterday, Kakashi. Care to elucidate?"
"We encountered an adversary in Taki, sir," Kakashi began, his voice steady. "One of our own was ambushed, but we successfully defused the situation."
"So, the hostile ninja was killed?"
"Yes, Hinata eliminated the threat decisively."
The Tsuchikage's eyes gleamed with interest. "This Hyuuga girl? Impressive work. Compact but effective, much like myself. Any information on the deceased ninja?"
"It was a female," Hinata said. "She mentioned wanting to bring me to her superior due to my Kekkei Genkai. She wielded a unique chakra rod as her weapon."
"She coveted your eyes?"
"Yes."
Kakashi interjected, his thoughts focused on their mission. "If I may, Tsuchikage-sama, allow me to explain that our delay was necessary to retreat and attend to Hinata's wounds."
The Tsuchikage contemplated for a moment. "Kamiya-kun, do we have any developments regarding the Kannabi Bridge?"
Kamiya stepped forward, addressing the Tsuchikage.
"Tsuchikage-sama, should we consider repairing the Kannabi Bridge, which links Konoha to Iwa? It was destroyed during the Third Shinobi War, and afterward, no one bothered to rebuild it."
The Tsuchikage nodded thoughtfully. "Repairing and maintaining the Kannabi bridge could strain our resources, taking attention away from more pressing requirements in the surrounding villages and among our armed personnel. I plan to bring this up in a Council meeting. Kamiya-kun, shall we continue?" The Tsuchikage grumbled impatiently. "Give them a concise overview."
Kamiya unfurled a scroll map on the desk, directing their attention to a region near the border of the Land of Earth. "Our intelligence indicates that the Hakumei tomb raiders have taken refuge in this mountain range. Their target is the Shrine of Tenshi." He pointed to the designated area on the map.
"It houses the Denkō no Daiyon Sōshi no Haka, the Tomb of The Fourth Priest Of Legend," he continued, tracing the map's details. "Our sources suggest that the final gemstone needed to summon the Earth God is hidden within. The first three stones have already been plundered from other villages."
Kakashi asked the question that weighed on his mind. "About this informant providing intelligence on Hakumei, can you shed some light on their identity?"
"Our source has been reliable for an extended period, and all information has proven accurate," he replied. "However, we must maintain their anonymity."
"Understood, Kamiya-kun," Kakashi replied with a nod.
Kamiya continued," According to our best estimates, the core of their group is composed of just four people, one of whom goes by the name Shigai. He served as a commander in our military in the past, but he was let go after a few years. This owed to his problems with the peace deal signed by Iwa and other villages. Since then, he has been seen very infrequently. We'll head out to Tenshi Village this late noon; a team of our Shinobi has been stationed there," Kamiya stated, his gaze shifting to the map. "Our source indicates that the raid may commence on an unknown day starting tomorrow. We'll regroup there, and further instructions will be discussed. After this meeting, your Team is free to explore Iwagakure. Meet me at the Tenka Genkan at 5.00 PM."
Kakashi studied the map thoughtfully. "We'll track their movements and prevent them from reaching the shrine." Hinata and Shino nodded in silent agreement.
"See that you do," warned the Tsuchikage, his expression stern. "I'm holding you accountable, Kakashi. Don't fail me."
"You have my word."
The Team sat in a traditional tea garden, surrounded by fragrant blooms and tranquil ponds, a winding stone path leading to their secluded alcove.
Kakashi's mask was pulled down as he savored the tender braised pork belly swimming in his velvety miso broth. "Mmm, the pork is so soft it melts in my mouth," he mumbled through noodles.
Shino took delicate slurps of his rich chicken ramen, nodding in approval at the complex flavors blending in each sip. A rare smile crossed his face.
Kiba noisily slurped up the spicy pork ramen, beads of sweat forming as the heat hit. "Woo, this packs a punch!" he exclaimed, panting as he shoveled in more chashu pork.
Hinata picked at the variety of seafood adorning her luxurious ramen, plucking out plump shrimp and sliced tender squid. "It's almost too beautiful to eat," she whispered.
At their feet, Akamaru chewed contentedly on his massive steak, tail wagging. He gratefully licked Kiba's hand, who snuck him extra meat when no one looked.
The Team continued enjoying their lunch, the only sounds of slurping, chopstick clacking, and appreciative murmurs. For a moment, they were simply five friends delighting in each other's company and Iwa's culinary delights, their mission's gravity forgotten.
"We have four hours before meeting Kamiya-san; we might as well enjoy ourselves, I think," Kiba said, licking his cold, sweet honey lavender ice cream that was starting to melt quickly under the relentless mid-day sun. He savored the floral notes dancing on his tongue as he and the rest of Team Kakashi strolled down the dusty streets of Iwagakure.
The heat from the cloudless blue sky above baked their skin as they passed shuttered shops and emptied market stalls. Kiba's ears twitched at the sporadic shouts of merchants packing their wares early, resigned to the lack of customers on this hot, arid day. Akamaru panted heavily alongside his partner, his pink tongue lolling out of his mouth as they explored more of the unusually deserted street before their meeting.
"Your kind of fun would be playing Dog-opoly, I guess, "Shino said, quietly enjoying his Black Seed Gelato.
Hinata saw a pamphlet on the street; she bent down and took it in her hand, reading its content while Kakashi slurped his Matcha Parfait from a cup with a straw.
"We can play 'crush the bug' if you want to, bro," Kiba retorted.
"Or we can play 'The Labyrinth Challenge,' look," Hinata said. All of them halted and looked from behind her shoulders.
"Prepare to embark on the adventure of a lifetime! The entry fee of 50,000 ryou may seem steep, but it's designed to separate the true thrill-seekers from the rest like no other. And what awaits those brave enough to enter? A treasure trove of prizes that will leave you breathless! Picture yourself clutching a box of Genso Fūin—Rare Elemental Seals, valued at a jaw-dropping 150,000-200,000 ryou, or reveling in the glory of 100,000 ryou in cold, hard cash. But that's not all—gain a VIP Access Pass, unlocking exclusive shops and hidden gems in Iwagakure during your stay. And let's not forget your luxurious Complimentary Hotel Suite, a top-floor haven for your entire visit. And finally, the pièce de résistance – an Exotic Weapons Crate brimming with rare and unique weaponry that will make your heart race. Are you ready to conquer the labyrinth and claim these extraordinary prizes? Don't miss your chance! Flip this pamphlet to a map of our location!"
"Hey, the prizes are interesting. We can give away the hotel prize and make good use of a box of "Rare Elemental Seals'. What do you think, bug boy? Ready for a challenge?"
"Playing 'fetch' is more your speed," Shino droned as he neatly ate his speckled gelato.
"Yeah? And it's more fun than 'following the butterfly','" Kiba fired back, dripping ice cream staining his hands purple.
Hinata frowned at the pamphlet. "A labyrinth full of unfamiliar hazards? The fee is so high, and it seems really risky..."
Kiba waved off her concerns. "With your eyes guiding us, we'll blaze through no problem!"
"You underestimate the complexity of navigating an elaborate maze," Shino countered. "My insects are far better suited to-"
"Will you can it about your weird bugs already?" Kiba interrupted, incensed.
Kakashi silently observed their bickering, paying no mind to his melting parfait. Hinata bit her lip, unsettled by the prospect of the labyrinth's perils. But the boys seemed fired up, competitive spirits igniting as they argued over who was best equipped to tackle the challenge.
Hinata looked anxiously at Kakashi again, seeking his authoritative wisdom. But their Sensei appeared intrigued, his expression inscrutable behind his mask as he eyed the pamphlet's tantalizing prizes. Hinata sighed, outnumbered by their zeal despite her misgivings.
"Let's enter it. We need those elemental seals," Kakashi made a decision.
As the day wore on, the village streets pulsed with the dynamic energy and daily routines of Iwa shinobi as they went about their work and rigorous training, showcasing the foundations of their formidable power.
Itachi remained motionless in the shadows; the only sound was the soft rustle of feathers as the crow shifted on its perch.
"You haven't been tough enough on her," the crow suddenly squawked, its beady eyes fixed on Itachi. "Refraining from utilizing the Mangekyou Sharingan gives the impression that you're not truly committed to ending her life. It seems like you've been stalling for time. Do you genuinely desire to see her dead?"
Itachi remained silent, his face revealing no reaction.
The crow ruffled its feathers impatiently. "You're growing soft," it croaked. "Soft."
"Silence, crow," Itachi finally spoke, his voice a quiet rasp.
The crow let out an indignant caw before taking off in a displeased manner, disappearing into the gloom of the alleyway.
Alone once more, Itachi stared ahead, the crow's words echoing in his mind.
It was true.
He had restrained himself, sparing the Hyuuga girl. Did he make a mistake? Perhaps there was more to it than that? Unexpectedly, a memory flashed: her eyes brought to mind those of someone he had loved and lost.
No, he cautioned himself. Such reminiscences were a luxury forbidden to those on his path. He could not falter again. The girl posed a threat to his greater purpose, an obstacle to be removed without emotion.
Nothing more.
Tomorrow, he would seek her out and complete his task without hesitation or mercy. The crow was correct; he had been too lenient. That ended now.
He vanished into the darkness, leaving no trace of his presence except a solitary black feather drifting slowly to the ground.
The air swirled with smells of hot oil, buttered popcorn, and sickly-sweet cotton candy as Team Kakashi approached the heart of the carnival.
They wove through noisy crowds gathered around games of skill and chance. Barkers called out, enticing people to test their aim, strength, or luck. The team passed food stalls serving crispy fried fare, gooey sweets, and every snack imaginable.
Kiba's nose twitched as he took in the mingling scents. "Check out that two-headed hot dog! Let's grab a bite after we find this labyrinth place."
As they neared the center, a massive tent dominated the landscape. Bold red and black stripes covered the exterior. The muffled announcer's voice within beckoned the brave and courageous.
After the assault of carnival sights and sounds outside, the ominous shadowy maze entrance loomed before them, the announcer's challenges echoing through the space.
As Team Kakashi approached the nondescript building advertised on the pamphlet, they heard a booming voice. "Step right up for the thrilling challenge of a lifetime! Enter the labyrinth if you dare!"
A small crowd was gathered around a broad-shouldered man waving people toward the entrance. "Fortune and glory await our next brave victor!" he announced.
Just then, the doors burst open, and a man came stumbling out, bloody and missing an arm. The crowd gasped as he collapsed with a scream. Medics rushed to his aid.
Kiba and Shino turned to each other, both looking more uncertain. "On second thought, maybe this isn't such a hot idea..." Kiba muttered.
Their Sensei's gaze was transfixed on the gruesome spectacle.
"This labyrinth is dangerous enough to maim and kill. I cannot risk your safety—I will go alone," he said, his expression hardened.
"But I will need your help remotely. Can you three provide support and guidance for me from the outside using your tracking skills?"
The three students nodded solemnly.
"We have to think of a way to communicate. Do you have anything?" Kakashi asked.
The three of them looked at each other before Kiba's face brightened, "We can use the Nag Scroll!"
"Nag Scroll?" Kakashi was perplexed.
"Ugh, this thing?" Kiba replied, holding out a seal of his jacket. "It's the bane of my existence, thanks to my mom. She calls it the 'Messeeji Fūin', but I just think of it as the Nag Scroll. She's always adding more stuff to the grocery list, so I never actually finish shopping.
As soon as I'm about to check out, poof - the scroll glows, and there're five more things she 'suddenly remembers' we need. More milk, extra eggs, some weird herbal supplement she read about. It never ends!
I'm basically the man of the house since my dad's away so much. And that means being at my mom's beck and call as her personal shopper. This scroll is like a leash she keeps me on!
I'll be halfway across town lugging heavy bags back, tired and ready to be done when bam—the scroll ruins it again. More veggies, a different brand of rice, yet another recipe ingredient...
I don't mind helping out. But c'mon, does she really need me to run back for figs and lentils just as I walk in the door? Give a guy a break," he babbled.
Kakashi turned the small scroll over in his hands. "So with this, your team can send me messages?"
Kiba nodded. "Yup, my mom just performs a simple sealing jutsu and speaks her message via a few hand seals to add it to the scroll."
Kakashi raised an eyebrow. "I think your team will be more concise than your mother about grocery needs. Is it secure? I don't want our communications being intercepted."
"Totally safe," Kiba assured. "The seal uses our chakra signatures to lock the messages. No one but you can access them."
Kakashi seemed satisfied. "Good. Have Hinata, Shino, and you perform the sealing jutsu so you can send me messages in real time with any guidance that could help me through the labyrinth. This will be invaluable with me going solo."
"You got it, sensei!" Kiba gave a mock salute. "We'll ensure this scroll becomes a labyrinth walkthrough guide for you!"
When Kakashi emerged from the labyrinth, he staggered briefly before catching himself, while his students applauded him. His muscles trembled from utter exhaustion, and his clothes were tattered and filthy. Dirt and blood smeared his face beneath the matted white hair.
His students' cheers at his return barely registered through the ringing in his ears. The endless hours of lethal traps, illusions, and enemies he had pushed him to the absolute brink, both mentally and physically. Each step was now a monumental effort.
"That was too close Sensei! But we're so glad you made it through," Hinata said. Kiba chuckled, clasping Kakashi's shoulder. "I knew that scroll would pull you through somehow."
Kakashi gave a tired smile. "I couldn't have done it without you three."
"Now you gotta hand me back that scroll, sensei, because if I lose it, my mom will kill me," Kiba said, holding his hand expectantly.
Kakashi raised an eyebrow and pulled the scroll from his vest. "I see why you call it the Nag Scroll—I can imagine how your mom would add messages persistently," he remarked dryly.
He placed the scroll in Kiba's outstretched hand.
Kiba chuckled sheepishly. "Yeah, once she gets going with the grocery lists, there's no stopping her. But hey, at least it helped lead you through, right?" He grinned, tucking the scroll safely away.
"That it did—though I think facing those traps again might've been less taxing than one of your mother's marathon grocery request sessions," Kakashi quipped with a tired smile. Hinata and Shino laughed, equally glad to have their unflappable Sensei back, nag scroll and all.
As planned, they met Kamiya in the Tenka Genkan in the late afternoon light. Silently, he led them through the busy alleys of Iwa, the setting sun casting an orange glow as people headed home. They arrived at a darkened passage hidden behind crates where an iron door was propped slightly ajar.
One by one, they slipped through, closing the door behind them with a faint click. They had made it outside the fortified walls of Iwa undetected.
Stepping into the forest, daylight still filtered through the dense trees. "We can reach Tenshi within the hour if we move swiftly," Kamiya said before leaping into the branches above.
Team Kakashi followed in fluid unison, dappled sunlight guiding their way as they raced from limb to limb. Their footsteps made no sound as they flew through the evening, each moment bringing them closer to the hidden village.
At last, the forest thinned, revealing a settlement nestled in the rolling green hills. Tenshi's weathered gate emerged, marked by a vine-strewn torii, beneath which lights began flickering in the valley below as dusk fell.
They had arrived.
Kamiya unfurled a larger, more detailed map across the table, showing the forested hills and network of tunnels surrounding the Shrine of Tenshi.
"There were three known tunnels leading directly to the shrine," he said, circling them in red ink. "We had lookouts stationed at the entrances here, here, and here."
He pointed to several other marked points. "We also had scout units patrolling these ridgelines that overlooked the surrounding area."
Tracing a finger along the densely forested areas, he continued, "However, undiscovered passageways might have been hidden throughout these hills. The forest provided perfect cover for approaching forces."
Kakashi traced his route. "My Team could sweep through these sectors. Hinata's Byakugan could detect any hidden tunnels or enemy chakra. Kiba and Akamaru could track scents and Shino's insects could also scout."
Kamiya nodded in approval. "Good. My men could cover the known access points while you monitored the wider terrain. If engaged, signal your location with a fire jutsu to alert my units."
Pointing to the shrine, he said, "If Hakumei breached the inner sanctum, retrieving the gemstone had to be our top priority. Capture or eliminate any hostiles, but secure that gem."
"Understood," Kakashi affirmed. "Preventing them from summoning the Earth God was our key objective."
Kamiya rolled up the map. "If we maintained vigilance and coordinated our forces, we could counter any incursion. But don't underestimate these tomb raiders - they are cunning and vicious."
His face became stern. "Stay alert out there. This sacred site must not fall to these merciless thieves."
The Team nodded solemnly, ready to begin their critical mission. As they departed, Kakashi reiterated their roles and sectors. United, they would safeguard the shrine and thwart this ominous threat.
"Your accommodations have been arranged at an inn near the local Tea Garden for the duration of your high-stakes mission here in the village. While focus and vigilance are paramount, I hope you can find some rest and enjoyment during your stay when duties permit," the red-haired Iwa Nin added.
Uchiha Madara strained in his seat in the dimly lit hideout as he heard a slight rustle from the shadows. He watched intently as Black Zetsu's dark form rose from the ground, glowing faint eyes glinting in the gloom.
Their gazes locked in silent understanding—Black Zetsu had returned with news.
"Show me," Madara commanded, hunger flashing in his eyes.
Without a word, Black Zetsu stretched out an arm. Tendrils snaked from its fingers, seeking Madara's temple. Upon contact, vivid and visceral visions poured into Madara's mind—the Hyuuga girl chatting with and embracing her teammates.
"Itachi asked about the Hyuuga before," Madara mused, brows furrowing, eyes focusing on only something he saw.
"He takes an interest in the girl. Enthralling."
The images shifted, focusing now on a masked ninja, his shock of white hair indisputable..
"And Hatake…Kakashi."
Dusk settled over the village, bathing the inn's porch in orange and pink light ribbons. Kakashi lingered as his Team disappeared inside, sensing Kamiya had more to say.
"Before you retire for the evening, Kakashi-san, there's something you should know," Kamiya said, his expression grim.
Kakashi's eye narrowed. "Go on."
"The night guards found their front post companions unconscious—slumped over as though attacked. But the men won't wake, even now." Kamiya shook his head. "Our medics are baffled."
Kakashi pictured the formidable gates, the mighty doors they watched yesterday. What had breached Iwa's defenses undetected?
"No traces left behind?" he asked.
Kamiya watched the dying light cast the porch in deepening shadows. "None yet. But we'll uncover the truth, one way or another. If regular intervention fails, we might use our interrogation team to rouse them," he added, his face reserved, before continuing, "I thought I should tell you about it. I'll see you again tomorrow, Kakashi-san. I'll be in room number one if you need me."
The Iwa Ninja bowed before leaving, to which Kakashi responded with a reciprocal bow of his own.
As Kakashi slid the porch door open, warm light spilled out to push back the night. But darkness still clung to the edges like silent, gathering storms.
As dusk settled over Tenshi Village, an elderly innkeeper struggled to split logs with his axe. His frail arms shook with effort, the blade barely biting into the wood. Sighing wearily, he wiped his brow just as a young traveler approached.
"Pardon me, sir. May I assist with that?" the stranger asked politely.
The innkeeper eyed him—he looked harmless enough with his straw hat obscuring his face. "Ah yes, thank you kindly. These old bones aren't what they used to be."
The man removed his hat, revealing the delicate features and jet-black hair tied in a ponytail. He picked up the axe and spun it in one hand. Channeling his chakra, he brought the blade down. The young man grasped the axe firmly and concentrated his chakra into the blade.
A faint aura of blue energy enveloped the metal as he raised it over a log. With perfect control, he brought the axe down in one clean stroke. The log split cleanly in two, the chakra-infused blade cutting through it like a razor through silk.
The innkeeper watched in fascination as he methodically worked through the piles of logs, his chakra allowing the axe to slice through the wood easily. The once dull and heavy tool moved like a feather in the young man's hands.
Within half an hour, he had chopped and neatly stacked enough firewood to last the inn for two weeks. His chakra control and precision with the axe were masterful. With the final log split, the blue shimmer around the blade faded as he handed the axe back to the grateful innkeeper.
"Marvelous!" he exclaimed. "Please, share some tea. It's the least I can do."
Soon, they were seated together as the innkeeper prepared a fresh pot of hojicha. "We have a full inn tonight, including some important folks," he remarked.
The young man's ears perked up. "Oh? Anyone interesting?"
"A team of ninjas visiting from Iwagakure, led by the famed Copy Ninja. And a girl with white eyes. Peculiar group."
The young man hid his unsurprise. "How fortunate for your establishment," he said evenly, sipping his tea.
The innkeeper nodded. "Yes, but more work for these old bones. Thank the heavens for kind souls like yourself, young man."
He inclined his head politely. "It was my pleasure."
As they finished their tea, the innkeeper showed him to the door. "Please stay if you need lodging. Inns are scarce with all the activity lately."
The young man tipped his hat in thanks. Once outside, a slow smile crossed his face.
A Ryokan staff placed futons on the Tatami mats inside their guest room. Team Kakashi was gathering at a private dining space inside their room.
The server arrived, her silk kimono swishing softly to deliver the first course. Savory aromas of seared steak and chicken skewers filled the air.
Kakashi cleared his throat as Hinata, Shino, and Kiba devoured the appetizers. "While we enjoy this feast, I wanted to present you all with the labyrinth rewards officially."
He unsealed the crates one by one, revealing gleaming weapons, pouches of ryou, and the box of rare elemental seals. "These are now rightfully yours for exemplary performance under pressure today. But have your dinner first. We can discuss which seal goes to who tomorrow.
"Hai," the three of them answered in unison.
Hinata, Shino, and Kiba eyed their lacquered chopsticks, eager to dig into the feast before them. With each succulent bite of the appetizer, complex flavors danced across their tongues—the sweet and salty ponzu, the savory umami of the beef, the smoky char enhancing the chicken. It did not take long for Shino, Kiba, and Akamaru to devour their kaiseki meals, savoring each delectable morsel, before both boys excused themselves.
"You're going to the onsen?" Hinata asked, her voice lilting as both boys approached the fusuma door.
"Nope. Shino's bugs reconned the village while we attended the mission briefing earlier. They found a secluded waterfall not far from here. So, we're going there for a bath instead. I want to ask you to join us, but it'd be inappropriate and unsafe for you to bathe alone without us watching. Sorry, Hinata. We'll return soon, though." Kiba explained.
"Not to worry, Hinata will remain here at the inn with me. The onsen has segregated bathing, so it will be safe for her to bathe there with the other female guests." Kakashi reassured.
"Hai, Kakashi-sensei," the boys chorused before sliding the fusuma shut and heading off.
"Okay, remember, even if a girl your age asks you to go out of the onsen to somewhere else in my name, just ignore her. I won't ask you to go anywhere. I'll just be outside. I'll take my bath when you're done and Shino and Kiba return from the waterfall. "
The young lady appeared embarrassed as if it was too much for her.
"I feel like I've caused you trouble, Kakashi-sensei."
"No, you haven't. This is how it should be when any kunoichi is on my Team. Besides, we should take precautions. Kamiya told me that the Iwa front guards were unconscious—most likely attacked—not long after we entered the gates last dusk. Iwa medic squad is still trying to revive them."
"You think it's Itachi-san?"
"At this point, it could be the crooks from Hakumei too. Or a random ninja. But if it were Itachi, it wouldn't be the first time he did it."
Kakashi couldn't help but notice how her shoulders were hunched like she was trying to look smaller and less visible.
"You look anxious, Hinata. Anything else you wanna tell me about Itachi?"
The girl looked emptily on the surface of the short-legged table; her gaze distant.
"He…he had a girlfriend," she hesitated briefly.
"He did? "
She turned to look at Kakashi and nodded, "An Uchiha girl. "
"So, she was killed in the massacre as well?"
Hinata nodded again, her eyes briefly dropping as she confirmed, "he slit her throat at the river."
Silence fell into the small room when Hinata recounted the event; she looked down at the table again, her tone almost troubled.
"He…loved her. He embraced her after he did it."
"I know that feeling," Kakashi murmured.
"What?"
He briefly glanced elsewhere, realizing he had just opened himself to her.
"You really ought to visit the onsen. Get plenty of rest tonight because tomorrow will be a busy day."
She looked at him, a little confused, before her gaze wavered back to the table.
"Hai."
The milky forest light illuminated the shining dew on leaves. Intermittent sunlight pierced the thick canopy as Rin and Kakashi stepped through the damp, earthy forest.
"Kakashi, I can't return to Konoha," Rin said, trembling.
Kakashi furrowed his brow, "What are you talking about?"
Tears welled in her eyes, "You have to kill me now!" she pleaded.
Kakashi shook his head, bewildered. "What? Rin, what's going on?"
Rin wrung her hands anxiously. "The Hidden Mist is using me. I might end up attacking our home."
"No. I promised Obito I'd protect you," Kakashi said firmly. "We'll get back safely together."
Rin choked back a sob, her voice breaking. "Do it now, please!"
Kakashi's posture stiffened. He tightened his grip on his weapon. "I won't. Stay here. I'll stop them."
He turned to face the shadows of the forest.
All that remained was for him to ram it through the Kiri Ninja's chest.
I will protect you. I will…
"Kakashi…"
Her voice was so soft it was almost a whisper. Her eyes were wide open and glistened with tears, staring into his soul.
Rin? When did you…
Kakashi froze as crimson spread across Rin's chest, the faint scent of burned flesh piercing the air. Blood ran down her lip and dripped in a hole in her chest.
The Chidori was sizzling, chirping frantically, flashing flutteringly on her face. His shrieking Chidori faded, leaving only deafening silence.
The truth slowly dawned on him. Tears stung his eyes, and he blinked them away.
Rin. Why…why couldn't my Sharingan see...
He felt her face blur with each second, and his body felt completely weightless. He dissolved like ice melting under the sun's warmth. He had the sensation of meandering through time and slipping between its folds.
His eyes snapped open, and Kakashi was covered in a cold sweat, shaking, heart pounding, looking around the room.
He got up cautiously, shivering, rubbed his head and eyes, and tried to awaken fully.
He slowly raised himself and sat. With a sigh, Kakashi rose from his futon, careful not to disturb his sleeping comrades.
He quietly made his way to the door, opened it, and stood silently on the porch—the first light was visible in the daybreak sky like embers gently stirring in the shadows. He allowed the frigid dawn air to numb his skin. But nothing could dampen the maelstrom raging within.
Although he made a concerted effort to prevent his conscious mind from recalling the incident, the memories continued to plague his unconscious thoughts. The images poured into his torrent of dreams like a dam would let water out during a flood.
He killed her once, but in his dreams, he killed her a thousand times.
"Rin…" he murmured to the cold air.
