A/N: Now, this chapter will look a bit longer if you look at the scrollbar, but it's because I've attached the stat sheet for Ramattra at the bottom. I was originally going to upload it as a separate chapter, when I realized I could just do this instead.
Archer was really strong.
It was a thought that flittered mindlessly through Lena as she watched the red-clad man fight against the Omnic. As Ramattra swung with his staff, the force of which cracked the asphalt below them, Archer matched it with his own blades.
This was the first time she was able to watch Archer fight. The only other time was during the initial attack on the base, and back then, he was just shooting arrows from somewhere else. Granted, those arrows were bigger than her arm, but still.
She knew intellectually that he had to have been strong to do that. That he really was a Heroic Spirit capable of inhuman feats. That he had some magical abilities that she didn't entirely know about.
She thought she knew that.
Archer looked human, certainly. He was sarcastic, was a great cook, and would help her when she needed it. In her head, she saw him as a human that had some skills exclusive to him, just like her with her chronal accelerator.
She was wrong.
She watched Archer slash down with an empty hand, only for that hand to be filled with a slab of rock in the vague shape of a sword. The Null Sector leader tilted to the side, the slab missing him entirely. The people around her almost fell over as the ground shuddered.
Ramattra's arm was covered with silver, as his fist grew to three times its size.
With flexibility that Lena had never seen an Omnic have, Ramattra twisted and launched what would've been a devastating counter blow, only for another sword, as wide as Lena's own torso, to deflect it. The fist was deflected, only for it to project a purple wave.
The wave hit a nearby car, which was summarily vaporized.
"Get down!"
Lena was startled from her entranced observations as Archer shouted at her head. Belatedly, she saw the minigun on Ramattra's shoulder pointed not at the Spirit, but at them. She quickly dove to the side just as it started firing, alongside everyone near her.
Almost everyone, that is.
Two operatives, ones she recognized from training, were gunned down.
A screech of metal on metal, and the bullets stopped. After a moment, the ground rumbled once more from the clash of the two combatants. Lena tentatively peeked around the barrier she found herself, and saw that Archer managed to cut down the minigun.
It didn't last.
Silver flowed from Ramattra once more, this time covering his entire body. With a whirr, the Null Sector leader was suddenly even bigger than before, now towering over Archer.
The man didn't hesitate.
Two curved swords, one black and one white. He jammed them towards the Omnic's joints, just as Ramattra raised both his arms. They struck true, the swords slipping between the shoulders.
They got stuck.
She saw as Archer tried to pull away, only for the swords to fail to move. It was a momentary pause, one that Ramattra took advantage of. Where his last attack was dodged, this one hit Archer straight on. A near deafening thud as Archer was bodily thrown back over ten meters.
Behind him, the ground cratered, asphalt being thrown up from the force of the attack.
Archer stood up. A blow that would've killed and pulped a man, and he just stood up. She could see him wince for a second, before he stretched his neck as if trying to get the kinks out.
"Attacking civilians now, are you? I thought you wanted a duel?" The dark-skinned man talked almost casually, as if he wasn't in the middle of a fight.
"A duel this may be, but I would be remiss if I didn't take advantage of your weakness when it was served on a silver platter." For his part, Ramattra was the same, crossing his arms in apparent ease, "Now, as enjoyable this has been, shall we take this seriously now? This warm-up is stretching on for too long."
Archer didn't say anything in response. Instead, he smirked and snapped his fingers.
The two blades still stuck in Ramattra's shoulder blade suddenly grew massively. Where before their ends were suspended mid-air, now, they reached and impacted the ground. Archer moved.
Lena didn't see him move. She could only think that he did, as in one moment, he was standing a fair distance away. Then, he was next to Ramattra, gripping one sword and lopping off the Omnic's arm. With a dull clang, the appendage fell to the ground.
The Null Sector leader responded with a stomp, a pulse of purple echoing around him, forcing Archer to back off.
"Fascinating." The Omnic regarded the event with inhuman calmness. As if the fact he was down an arm was a mild breeze and not significant in the slightest.
Before she could listen in any further, Lena was pulled down, right into the snarling face of Commander Morrison, "Oxton, what the fuck are you doing?!" Lena blinked, before her head swiveled to the people behind them.
They were all already moving, evacuating into the base. She hadn't even noticed, having been transfixed on the battle right in front of them, "I-"
"Just move!"
A faint click and a whirr. Then more. A slight widening of Morrison's eyes, before he shouted, "Wilhelm, barrier!" As he did so, he dragged Lena to the ground. The cadet took a quick glance upward, and her own eyes widened.
The bigger of the two combatants had picked up his fallen staff, and was now fighting against Archer one handed. At the end of the staff, where there was an orb originally, was a bladed point, making it look more like a spear than staff. Tendrils escaped from it regardless, flowing into vantage points.
Upon which the tendrils coalesced into a dozen or so Bastion miniguns. All of which were aiming at the retreating humans.
They started firing. Reinhardt, thankfully, had put up his barrier, yet Lena doubted even it would hold up to the amount of bullets it was being peppered with.
A gust of air.
Large slabs of metal interposed themselves between the bullets and them. A glance upward, and Lena could make out hilts. Swords. Archer had managed to create the swords and protect them. For a moment. Lena was relieved. They had time to get away, get everyone to safety.
The swords broke.
The miniguns hadn't stopped firing. Instead, they had started firing even faster. What's more, she could feel the impact that every bullet made with the swords. Soon, they carved through, and the bullets were already impacting Reinhardt's barrier even more so.
In response, more swords were dropped.
Dozens first. Then hundreds. As one sword broke, three more came to replace it. Over and over again. Metal flew all over the place, and Lena could feel more than one scratch at her face. Blue light covered the street as the broken swords disappeared.
"Oxton, I said to get the fuck out of here!"
'I can't just leave you here!'
"You can and you will! I can hold this one off, but I can't guarantee that you won't get caught in the collateral if you don't move it!"
Alongside her mental conversation with Archer, Morrison had gotten over his confusion over the swords and had started dragging the both of them towards the base. He handed her over to Reinhardt, who looked at her with a worried expression.
"Close the blast doors!"
The sounds of screeching steel as heavy metal fell over the entrance. The sounds of battle still raged on, the doors not having dulled it in the slightest. In fact, it seemed as though it had only gotten even fiercer.
Morrison quickly left, moving with purpose between the panicking crowd.
Meanwhile, Lena was left with Reinhardt and Genji, the latter having moved towards them with narrowed eyes.
"Oxton, that man. That was Emiya, was it not?"
"Y-Yeah."
"How? Why?" Genji stepped up next to her, glaring at her with red eyes. The crusader placed himself between them with a stern look on his face.
"Now, now, Genji." He held up both his arms in a placating gesture, "As much as everyone wants answers, we can always ask later. Right now, Archer is fighting on our side against that Ravager unit." A grim expression was set on the man's features.
It was moments like these that reminded Lena that for all the joviality that Reinhardt showed, he was a blooded veteran of the Omnic Crisis. He'd seen more things in his life that Lena could begin to imagine. His pragmatism to accept an ally when they needed it was understandable.
This pragmatism must've gotten through to Genji, who gave one last scoff before nodding in acceptance.
The building shook as an explosion came from right outside the blast doors.
"What are we dealing with?" As much as Archer said that he could take care of it, Lena wasn't going to just leave him there. He might be angry at her, furious even, but the man was one of her friends. She wasn't going to do nothing while he was fighting to save their lives.
"An R-7000 unit, also known as a Ravager." Reinhardt spoke in hushed tones, glancing around to see if anyone else was listening, "They were tactical commanders back in the Crisis. I don't know the exact specifics, but they're supposedly smarter than any human out there. If there was a battle that the Omnics won, then chances are, they were led by a Ravager."
"I haven't heard anything like that before." Lena's brow furrowed as she tried to remember anything about the supposed Omnic commanders. She'd read a lot about the Crisis, and not once had she heard about anything resembling a counterpart to Commander Morrison on the Omnic's side.
"They were deemed too important for the public to know. They were made on an individual scale, with another one only being built had one of the others been destroyed. I had thought they had gone extinct after everything. It seems I was wrong."
"Are you sure you should be telling us this then?" It was Genji that spoke, even as he was coiled to strike after a particularly loud bang had hit the metal door.
"We were almost killed by one, you at least deserve to know what it was." Reinhardt shrugged, though Lena could spot him eyeing the door, "Besides, Lena, you have a way to communicate with Archer, I'm guessing?"
"How'd you-"
"You were distracted that entire time we were out there. You were also looking directly at him during that time. I don't particularly know the exact mechanics on how you did it, and I don't particularly care." The German man nodded at her as she stared at him in shock, "If you can contact him, then we can likely form a plan of action to get everyone out."
"A-Alright."
'Archer?'
An explosion.
"I heard."
'You did?'
"Mostly because you couldn't keep your thoughts to yourself. Ask Wilhelm about the Ravager's abilities, Preferably quickly."
"Archer is asking what you know about the Ravager."
"Nanomachines." Reinhardt gave her a grave look as he took the message in stride, "Ravagers use nanomachines to augment their combat abilities. Rapid repair of body parts, increased strength, and everything in between. If Archer has something to disable them, then his chances of beating it go up significantly."
Pausing, Reinhardt gave a thoughtful frown, "Though this Ramattra admittedly goes beyond what I had originally known. None of the Ravagers I had fought in the past were this strong, nor did they have as many nanomachines to work with."
"Lucky me." Archer sarcastically replied as Lena relayed the news, "I'll think of something. For now, focus on the civilians."
"Too many Null Sector troops, and too many civilians. They've got us pinned down hard."
"I can scout ahead, see if there's any openings." The cyborg offered, to which Reinhardt gave his blessing.
"Shouldn't we be clearing this with Commander Morrison first?"
"Normally, yes." Reinhardt gestured to the side, where the Overwatch Commander was shouting orders to a group of Overwatch troopers, "Had you been rank-and-file, you would've been under his direct command."
He placed an arm on Lena's shoulder, "We wanted to announce this once you finished training, but time will not permit us, it seems. As the field leader of the Overwatch Task Force, I welcome you, Cadet Lena Oxton."
A beat. A moment of shock, followed by nervousness and excitement, all tinged with a healthy dose of fear. It was broken at the sound of Archer in her head.
"Congratulations. Now, brace yourselves."
Lena barely had time to warn everyone to hold onto something before Archer's voice echoed through everywhere.
"Caladbolg."
The very earth trembled as it shook apart.
All punctuated by the mad, cybernetic laughter echoing alongside it.
A/N: I want to point out, to people who haven't kept up with Overwatch lore, that Ramattra is a canon character. The lore about the R-7000's/Ravagers were mostly the same, with some differences. After the Crisis, he would eventually find his way into the Shambali, the same place that Zenyatta comes from.
Originally, he was not supposed to be a part of this story, as the original Slipstream was made way before he was introduced. But, well, when he did get introduced, I realized that my plan for the overarching story makes more sense if we include him, so here we are. I have to say, Ramattra does have some great voice lines.
As you can probably tell, this Ramattra is not just an Omnic. He's an Omnic that can fight Servants/Heroic Spirits/Counter Guardians. For that, have his stat sheet, in the form of FGO stats. Not all of these are canon (HP values and Attack values, for example), so take it with a grain of salt.
