Character Questions: Wesley of Latasi
Full name: Wesley of Latasi
Nickname: Wes (Preferred name), Nightmare of Latasi (moniker during the War against the Black Fang), Druid (By the Reed Brothers), Husband (by Rei though they're not married.), Sir Wesley (by Pent and the Etrurian Court)
Occupation: Druid, Scholar, member of Latasi's Magic Council, and member of the True Black Fang
Appearance: Wes has slightly unkempt purple hair, but due to keeping it no longer than his neck, it's rarely acknowledged as a hygiene issue. He wears circular prescription glasses as he's legally blind without them. He has slightly darker than fair skin, is lean, and is tall. Notably has an X-shaped scar on his right cheek due to the Nabata Dessert Massacre.
Age: 26 (though in that time period, 26 might as well be 37)
Mannerisms: Extremely well-spoken, and intelligent. Normally kind and almost always leaves a good impression on strangers. During times of war, he is extremely focused and barring times where he might challenge orders, he follows most of them with little question. During times of peace, he's normally learning all he can about Elder Magic or reading novels.
What does he/she wear?: Black Shaman Robes with blue accents made with his body type in mind. It also came with a hood, though he rarely wore it. When he was promoted and became a Druid, his Robes gained an upgrade as well. The sleeves became tattered as well as the bottom seams. They also became more spacious, no longer suffocating him. There was no hood. Instead, there was a cowl that was separated from the rest of the robes. He never wore it, however. The color scheme remained the same.
Favorite color: Blue
What is he/she good at?: A Magical Prodigy, thanks to his family. Wes sports an S Rank in Elder Magic, a B Rank in Anima Magic, and Staves. Non-Magical skills include being a well-respected cook as he learned while living with his grandmother. Otherwise, they would both starve. Before learning Elder Magic, Wes was trained in ballroom dancing and the Piano, both skills which he retains in case he has to make use of them. Comedically, he also has a sharp taste in romance novels thanks to his late wife Magi, forcing her love of literature on him.
What is he/she bad at?: During the Blazing Campaign, Wes was easily angered and triggered by hearing his dead wife's name. Merely mentioning her was the easiest way to enrage him. Even though he got over her passing during the same campaign, his easily angered nature changed to have a one-track mind when his mind is set on doing something. If it weren't for his friends, Wes would've shut himself in and died a long time ago.
What does he/she want?: To grow powerful enough where he won't feel threatened by his enemies.
What is his/her goal?: To ensure the safety of his family and friends.
What lie does he/she believe?: He doesn't believe he's strong enough to reliably fulfill his personal goals as well as his duties as a part of the Magic Council and the True Black Fang.
What flaw results from the lie?: Wes tends to sneak off and shut himself in to do intense sessions of learning Elder Magic despite being the only Druid in Latasi to have an S Rank. He won't eat or sleep. His friends and family have to ground him in order to prevent Wes from mentally damaging himself.
What truth does he/she learn?: That he's more than powerful enough to do his job and fulfill his personal goals and wishes.
What is his/her background?:
Wesley comes from a long line of Magical Giants. His mother Lea is one of the most powerful Sages in the continent of Elibe, weaker only than Pent and Athos. His father was a renowned and influential Bishop. His Grandmother was Niime, the Mountain Hermit. His destiny was always tied to Magic. It was a matter of which school he was going to have a natural affinity for. In the meantime, Wesley lived and trained like a Noble. Manners, Etiquette, Attitude, Music, and Dancing among the other requirements of a Noble were burned into him as a child.
Then it was revealed he had the Shadowgift, the ability to naturally cast Elder Magic. He held a large pool of Elder Magic on top of it. Niime and Lea were ecstatic. Wes' Father, however, was not. He wanted Wes to gain St. Elimine's blessings and learn Light Magic so he may become his heir. The opposite fact only served to anger his father, and he coldly abandoned his family like they were nothing. Luckily, Wes had to live with his Grandmother, so the costs of living were drastically reduced on all ends. That allowed Lea to thrive without her former husband. As Wes grew older, he learned Elder Magic at a frightening pace. At 17, he moved back to Latasi with his mother as Niime taught him all she felt he needed to know. Everything else he learned was done so alone.
Wes was welcomed back into his mother's life with open arms, though it became clear their family was nowhere near as influential as it was before his father left as he was the one with all the connections. And his return only added to the problem. Luckily, a friend of Wes's mother offered to share his family's riches with them if Wes married his daughter, a Druid named Magi. All parties consented and the two were wed. Magi was a year older than Wes. The pair rarely spoke to one another unless it was absolutely necessary and didn't even consummate the union. But the one conversation Magi decided to initiate to see what her husband was like led the pair to realize they had more common than they initially thought.
The couple fell in love like a normal married couple. After a few years, the people of Latasi forgot that their marriage was arranged. But Magi caught Magicblight a terminal and incurable disease for any Mage. To follow up, Wes' group during the Nabata Desert Excursion was murdered by Paul and Jasmine as a tip-off by Nergal in response to Magi denying his offer to join the Black Fang. The misfortune continued when Magi was killed while he was the sole survivor of the Nabata Desert Massacre. Wes swore vengeance on the movement that killed his wife, becoming the youngest Shaman to reach A Rank in Elder Magic in Latasi's history. Yet he became even more of a shut-in to his friends Luphy and Yuki and his family. Add in a hostile takeover by Magmeal and Wes, Lea, Niime, Yuki, and Luphy were forced to flee Latasi and ask for aid from Eliwood and his band of soldiers, joining them.
A lot of crazy events occurred during that campaign. Wes' imprisonment, convincing members of the Black Fang like The Reed Brothers, and The Blue Crow, Ursula to defect, and his promotion into a Druid among other things. In the end, he gained his vengeance when the man who called the hit on Magi, Nergal was brutally killed by Eliwood, Hector, and Lyndis.
After the war was over, Lea would adopt Kole of Plegia who would become his little sister, Wes and Ursula would both join Latasi's Magic Council and become partners in the Council and the reformed Black Fang with Legault, and The Reed Brothers.
At some point, his near insatiable curiosity would lead to him inventing a new Job and Legendary Artifact. The War Druid, which allows the use of Axes, Staves, and Elder Magic, and the Dusk Lantern is a Levin Sword that was corrupted and contorted by overcharging it with Elder Magic.
And now with his new jobs? Who knows where we'll see or hear of Wesley of Latasi next?
Additional Questions about Wes
- Where does Wes see himself in the grand scheme of things?
As of now, Wes has faded into obscurity and only shows himself if commanded by the Magic Council or by the True Black Fang. It's for the best in his opinion as he's still learning and making discoveries. If the wrong person learns of them, it could spell disaster for him and those around him.
(Clearly understandable there)
- Can anyone actually challenge Wes in magic?
In terms of raw power and potential level of destruction, absolutely not. With enough focus, one spell from Wes can level a small country. He might not be able to move after said feat, but it's possible. In terms of experience, Mai and Okada will obviously give him a challenge. A battle between them would be pretty fierce.
(A matchup I would love to see, almost a melee so to speak)
Established characters in MK? Shang Tsung? Quan Chi? In a magical sense, Wes is miles more powerful than them and arguably on par with Shao Kahn. He laughs at Skarlet's addiction and would find pity in the woman. He'd mock Tanya's excessive anger and how it correlates to her pyromancy. In some cases can nullify it with Fenrir and Gespenst since those flames are more intense. A battle with Ermac will be torture for the construct. So the people who can challenge Wes' magical abilities are a handful. Even in the right scenario, Wes can still overwhelm them.
(I believe every word you said here. The people you listed here can't hope to match Wes' ability)
Editor's Thoughts?
Wes could challenge damn near anyone he so chooses because of his immense power. Even those in other fandoms wouldn't stand a chance against him. Yet, he seems content with where he is now to learn new spells to add to his arsenal.
