Killua had been gathering information from what now felt like forever to him. He could almost remember every single cross of his eyes. There were a couple of things that he learned so far from all of his research. The first thing was that heroes were very real in this world. They were admired and every single person aspires to be one. He looked into a lot of incidents surrounding heroes though and it often seemed like lives were sacrificed needlessly? If that was the word anyway. 'Vigilantes', a term meaning those who pursue hero work without being officially recognized by the government, were shunned in a lot of cases. During 'villain attacks' heroes can take a while to get to a scene and those who involve themselves at all are often charged with a crime. It didn't seem particularly fair to him but he had never had a strong sense of justice so it didn't really affect him.

The second thing he learned was that 'quirks' were similar to nen hatsu abilities. These abilities manifest in four ways: the first being called an emitter. It manipulates objects and surroundings and can sometimes conjure up different elements. He came to the realization that this type was similar to manipulators and conjurers. The second category is called mutation. Apparently people that are born with it have permanent alterations to their bodies and they were likely some of the people he saw at first that he thought were chimera ants. The third category is called a transformation quirk. Apparently people with this type of quirk can temporarily mutate their body. So a better version of the other category of quirk. The final category of quirk is not unlike his specialist class. People with this type of quirk can accumulate something and use it later. Kinda like how he had to charge for godspeed. The issues with these abilities was how society reacted to them. Those with mutation quirks were often ostracized from their peers and those whose abilities stood out too much were abandoned by society. That's where the villains come in. The ideology of those who stray from society's path say that the innate nature of hero society is flawed and leaves behind more than it helps. These people are driven to commit harmful acts and that's why heroes exist. He almost got caught up in all the villain crap that he almost forgot about one of the most important things he had to do. Shigeru was going to test his quirk ability so he needed to decide what his ability should be now so it doesn't contradict itself later when he runs tests on him.

The third thing he learned looking up information was about the school Shigeru was attending, U. A. The school is basically a training place for up and coming heroes and several other schools like it are highly sought after as well. This was the biggest one out there though so if he were to join, he would probably make himself stand out far more than necessary. After carefully weighing the consequences, he decided on what his quirk should be : a transformation quirk. Godspeed was nice as an ability, however, it would make him stand out far too much here. So he decided on something more niche, the manipulation of his hands. He could do it with his legs as well but that was a little too much for what was supposed to be a small ability. If he uses godspeed later, for whatever reason, he could just claim he developed an emitter quirk as well.

The last thing he learned there was that time was completely fucked. In this world, the date was set at april 9, 2112, which was most definitely not what the date was when he was in his world. Though it seemed the months and days added up. The year was 1999 when he last checked so this absurd time jump let him know one of two things. Either their history started way earlier than his or his weird dimension jump also made him jump forward in time. He had hoped that since he jumped forward in time there would be a way to jump back in time in order to see Alluka again or whatever got him into this position would find a way to return him to the way he was when he was in, in his universe. He had hoped one of these would be the case and tried to not acknowledge the reality that he may never be able to go back. He taught her some combat but now that he wasn't there to protect her anymore, he now regretted not teaching her anything about it.

He went to sleep yesterday night like a normal kid but spent the night just researching everything. He didn't have a wink of sleep, not that it mattered of course. During the day, haruka spent a lot of time just setting up the computer for him and making other arrangements as well. She could now message him without worry and he had Shigeru's contact on his computer as well. Soon they would come looking for him though so he decided to pretend he had just woken up. The time read 6:57 am.

He had explored around the house when Shigeru and Haruka were asleep and mentally mapped out the whole location. It could come in handy later. For now though, he realized he stinked so he decided to go through their closet. Shigeru was bigger than him but it was better than wearing smelly clothes so he went with it. The way down to the closet was upstairs but he had to go back around through to the dining room to get it so forward he went. When he entered the dining room, however, he saw something of note. It was a pile of clothes with a little note on it. 'You probably don't have a lot of clothing so I went through some of Shigeru's clothing with him and picked out the ones he doesn't use as much. We'll go shopping for your clothes later!'

That was nice of her. He smiled to himself and went to his room to change.

After he had thrown his clothes in the upstairs laundry he decided to head downstairs and wait for them to get up, perusing the few books they had laying around in the process. After laying out his books, he inspected them all and realized he still couldn't read them. The paper he had at the library had been abandoned when Aizawa picked him up so he didn't have that information anymore. So he raced back to his room and wrote down first which symbols he remembered and then went to the internet to find a source that allowed him to hear what each symbol sounded like.

Once he raced back though, he saw a person inspecting the collection he had set out. He made an effort to make his paper wave and his last steps towards the dining room become audible as he approached. The magenta-eyed boy turned his head upon hearing this "did you put these out shiro?" he knew he had to act surprised so he put on his best surprised face and responded "uh. Yeah." he turned the paper so the side he wrote on wouldn't be visible to Shigeru "what for?" He had more than enough time to figure out his cover story so he said it without hesitation "I figured I should probably study textbooks about all the subjects I may be tested on to get into U. A., so I pulled out some books I thought may prove useful. "Shigeru doubted him though because of one of his choices in books "sure you need the 'archaeological structure of the world before quirks' for that?" shit, I didn't expect him to actually read them out like that. Killua was surprised but had perfected his disinterested face perfectly so shigeru couldn't see anything was wrong "not really, but i've got to cover all my bases. It could have some unexpected questions on the test that I won't know how to solve. " Shigeru was suspicious of him but decided to accept his excuse for now "I see."He walked away in silence, going to make his breakfast.

Killua was glad he got away with it but he realized he needed to be more wary from now on. He glanced down at his paper, translating as he went and decided to pick the one titled 'the history of quirks' as it felt most relevant to his current predicament. The first quirk user was born in china and had come out of nowhere from what killua could tell. Doctors thought it was an isolated case at first until several other babies were born that also had strange abilities started appearing. As society began to understand these concepts and the babies with quirks grew up, the world started to become more dangerous. They started abusing their quirks to commit crime and that's when the heroes appeared. They weren't unlike the modern day vigilantes but they were allowed since the authorities had no way to stop the villains. For their heroism, the heroes were recognized by the government and became official heroes. Killua thought it was hypocritical when he saw how vigilantes were treated but he didn't comment on it.

As he was about to read further he heard shigeru's voice shout out to him "food's ready shiro!" He got up and went towards the kitchen. Observing shigeru dishing out some scrambled eggs and toast, he made sure to put an excited smile on his face. "Oh. Thank you a lot!" The magenta-eyed boy smiled "eat up. We're gonna be testing some things after this to see what your quirk is so you'll need the energy." Killua nodded, noting Shigeru writing down a note and sitting down with him in the dining room. Killua pushed the books to the side for him and they began to eat.

"You put out another plate. Is that for your mom?" Shigeru finished his bite and responded "yeah." And he took another of his toast. "Wouldn't it be better to wait for her to wake up and then make food?" Shigeru had no change in expression "she always gets up pretty soon after me so I make food in preparation when I have days off." Killua realized that normally people have actual sleep schedules. "Why do you ask?" Killua defaulted to his normal excuse "the times they let me sleep were always random so the times I wake up at are random as well. I kind of just assumed other people were the same." No reaction was given from the other and neither dared to speak further.

When they finished with their food, they heard steps coming down the stairs. "Mom, food is on the counter." Haruka, still in her pajamas, lazily rubbed her eyes and said "yeah. Thanks." She went to go get coffee and heard Shigeru say "alright let's get going then." Even in her semi-unconscious state she could still hear what he was saying "you're leaving?" "We're going to go test to see what his quirk is?" She groggily looked at him "oh. .Alright. Be careful boys." she waved at him goodbye and watched as the door closed behind them "it is way too early for this shit."

"Quirks come in 4 types, you know them?" The research he did came in handy "yeah so you don't need to explain them to me." the brunette had another suspicion to add to his list but this time he voiced it "did you learn that from the books you looked at?" "yeah. It was a brief skim but I already knew some of it so it wasn't that hard to figure out. "

"Well, we know you aren't a mutation quirk for starters. If you were, you would have something visible on your body to show for it." Killua nodded his head "right."

"So that leaves an emitter quirk, a transformation quirk, and an accumulative quirk." Shigeru started to flex his knowledge of quirks "right. An accumulative quirk can be hard to test for so we'll start with the other two."

"Emitter quirks can take some to activate and realize. I have an emitter quirk and it activated on accident for me but situations vary so we can't try the method I used." killua with his knowledge of how nen worked, figured it was a one size fits all situation so he asked a question "why can't we?" Shigeru thought over how to best explain it in his head and decided to just show him instead.

"Watch what I do." as killua watched on he noticed something was off, the wind was blowing just a bit weird. When suddenly he felt it. A burst of air came flying towards him and stopped just before reaching his face. "That's an emitter quirk. These types of quirks only tend to come out in especially dangerous situations for the user and since you've been inside all the time, you haven't had a situation like that."

This actually isn't bad info. I did get the basics down but having more direct info on how this stuff happens will help me a lot in the long run. "Transformation quirks often happen when you just think that it would be useful to have this or that and then it happens." that's not particularly useful though… "Accumulative quirks are even more difficult to figure out then the other two. Since you store up energy in some way, you may not even realize you have stored it, and won't know how to release it at all."

"As you can tell, figuring out what quirk you have is difficult if it didn't come naturally to you before but I have a sure-fire method of figuring out what your quirk is." Killua was curious now. Maybe he wasn't wrong about it being similar to water divination. "And what's that method?"

"Intense focus." Killua felt like a ton of bricks fell onto his head "Is that it?" Shigeru laughed at him. "Hey what's that for!?" the brunette put a hand over his mouth to stifle his laughter "I was messing with you. It isn't just focus, though there is some truth to that."

"How so?"

"All methods of figuring out what quirk is require intense focus but these require you to focus on specific parts of something in order to activate them. Since you've already seen what an emitter quirk looks like, let's start with that shall we?"

Shigeru had instructed Killua to get into a mediation-like pose and position his hands on his knees. It's pretty similar to how Wing told us to train our ten. Although… "close your eyes and focus on the nature surrounding you. Listen to the birds chirping, the chatter of citizens, anything you can hear." Killua just pretended to focus on the sounds because he knew which 'quirk' he wanted to have and Shigeru seemed to buy his acting. "Now become one with it and make it bend to your will!"

Killua didn't follow any of his advice of course and put on his best face but he had to admit this wouldn't be bad advice at all if he were a normal kid. Shigeru said nothing and waited as Killua faked a sweat "let's stop." and killua started panting. "Did something happen?" he put on a serious expression "nope. You probably don't have an emitter quirk."

"Give me a minute."

"I was gonna suggest that anyway. You're pretty worn out already. I'll go get a drink for you." Killua nodded at him and muttered a thank you.

Now there was the very real issue Killua was facing. This is all way too similar to how nen would function. He needed to carefully look at them because this was all far too suspicious. He couldn't come to any conclusions yet but… "here."

Shigeru approached him with water in hand. He had made sure to put a decent amount of ice into it. "Thank you. Shigeru."

"Drink up cause you're gonna need it."

"So what is this next one?" Shigeru seemed game to explain further so he did. "We're going to be testing for transformative quirks. Accumulative is quite similar to it though so we can do it in succession if necessary."

"What does testing for transformative quirks entail?"

"Transformative quirks are considered manipulations of the body often made by the user so for this one, we're going to have you focus on feeling your entire body."

"Will it be like a second organ that I'll realize was there after I do that?"

Shigeru thought for a second before responding "maybe. I don't know how it works since I don't have a transformation quirk. I would ask my friends with transformation quirks but since we're doing it now it won't matter anyway." Killua nodded, "I guess so."

"Well get back into the same state you were in before." Killua obeyed the set of commands he gave him and they were pretty similar to what he had told him before: "focus strictly on your own body, hell after I tell you what to do, phase me out." Killua opened one eye and said "alright."

"Listen to your heart beating and feel your muscles. Not just feel but understand them. And-" Killua let him prattle on for a little longer and when killua decided it was ready, shigeru saw killua's fingers tense. Killua released his claws and kept his eyes closed for a few moments longer until Shigeru spoke "guess you do have a transformative quirk." Killua pretended to act surprised when he spoke and looked down at his claws, faking an amazed expression.

"Good thing too. Accumulative quirk finding is basically a deeper version of both transformative and emitter quirk finding." Good thing I didn't pick godspeed to be my quirk, that would probably make me stand out too much. "So what does it feel like?" Killua decided it wouldn't be best to lie in this instance "an extension of my body–" he manipulated his nails back into body and out again "that I can manipulate at will."

"Well, I'll let you find your quirk's strength on your own." Killua was surprised, he expected shigeru to want to see what it could do but the brunette waved him goodbye and went inside.

At least I don't have to falsify training it too. This was already difficult to fake.

Haruka spotted her son walking back inside again and asked him "weren't you supposed to be getting shiro to awaken his quirk?"

"He already did it."

"What?! That was quick." shigeru stifled a laugh "I thought so too as well but I realized his quirk must have been ready to burst years ago. If he never got to try anything then he never would have the chance to."

She nodded sipping her coffee "I see. So do you think he'll pass the exam?" the brunette looked thoughtful for a second before saying "it depends on him but I think he'll pass."

She smiled "If he ever needs help with anything, please shigeru." she didn't voice her entire claim but he got what she meant "yeah, I will."

Author's notes:

Ok you know how I said the actual story started a couple of chapters ago? I lied. It actually starts now. Cause y'know they actually get involved with the main plot of mha. Can't believe it took me 7 chapters for this. also If you can't tell this fic will be a slow burn a really fucking slow burn. Next chapter is gon's perspective on getting to mha lmao so it may be actually chapter 10 but idk.
