As the three walked through the forest a clearing was made visible and Aki, clothes now muddied, ran ahead of the couple. His mouth widened in awe as he looked down and saw the city. Building sprouting from this or that, of all colors stretched through. The city went as far as the eye could see and Aki was amazed at all of it. It was almost the same as his first experience at zaban city, though he couldn't remember it. Reina rushed after him as eager to see the sights as he was. Hazuki stood back, enjoying it as it came.

Neither of the Kobayashi's had seen the city for years. They were forced to leave years ago because of an… issue they had with the police and they hadn't gone back since. They finally felt compelled to go because of Aki but they both had been longing for this for a long time and this was just a worthy enough excuse for them.

They soon grew tired of looking at the view and instead looked towards the way down. It was already quite dangerous due to how steep it was, but now, due to the mud, it was even more dangerous. It was a slippery slope, not a metaphor this time but quite literally a slippery slope. The kobayashi's knew how dangerous it was so neither dared slip down but the 12 year old alongside them didn't hesitate moving just to the right of them as his starting point. He sat down and scooched inch by inch but the couple hadn't noticed before it was already too late.

They watched in horror as Aki slid further and further out of view and his 'yays' and laughs grew less and less audible. "Well might as well go down with him." as hazuki positioned himself into a sitting pose his wife eyed him in disbelief "really, you want to go down there? You're looking to get hurt!" he shot her a blank look "you got a live a little you know? Plus the ride down has to be way more interesting than life at the cabin." Before giving his wife a chance to respond he slid down making note of the trees that had been torn over and the various bushes on his fall down.

Reina felt afraid to go down but realizing that if her husband wasn't at the mountain with her life it would be hard to live and survive in, she decided to go down. "No point in resisting I guess." She made no resistance to the various rocks and bushes in her way, only making sure to get out of the way of the trees that would make her stop completely. In the end, she came down with the most scratches of the three.

As Aki looked around he noticed the fallen over log and made a note that that was a good place to sit while he waited. He wasn't done exploring the forest, however, and decided he would come back here later.

He looked at one tree in particular with a nest on one of the branches and watched as a mother bird flew down and gave food to each of her newly hatched babies. This area, unlike the storm-ridden place he awoke in, was full of luscious grass that you could fall asleep in, and there wasn't a trace of mud to be found anywhere except for where he slid down. It was so green that it matched his overall vibe and he enjoyed it greatly.

He went back to the log he had made a note of earlier and sat on it wanting completely to absorb it all. So he closed his eyes and meditated. The birds chirping began to ring in his ear, and he could feel the wind sweeping all of the leaves. He was a little confused when he began to sense something that should've been out of his reach so he opened his eyes.

There was something white surrounding his hands and as he looked towards the rest of his body, he confirmed it was enclosing the rest of him as well "wha-" but just as he started to question what was happening he heard the yell of Hazuki far to his right "Aki! Where are you?" he decided to get up from his position on the log and look for Hazuki, not minding any of the white stuff encasing him.

Hazuki heard the crunching of a leaf only a few feet away from him he saw that same spiky hair he had come to recognize over the course of a few days. "Hey, aki." Aki waved back and gave him a big smile "Hi, mr. Kobayashi! This place is so green. Have you seen all of it? It's so-" Hazuki pushed his palms towards the boy "calm down. You can tell us all about it later." gon gave him his best pouty face "okay…"

Soon after Aki's mini forest excursion had ended, the boys heard a thud, which they both discerned as being Reina, likely reaching the bottom like they did. The sound of Reina dusting her clothes off wasn't missed by either of the duo and they realized they were getting close. Hazuki spotted her and ran up to her but as soon as he did he was shouted at "WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING?!!!" Aki decided not to proceed towards her. "YOU COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED AND I COULDN'T HAVE SAVED YOU CAUSE I'M ALL OUT OF ENERGY." he knew he couldn't refute her argument, nor could he convince her otherwise so he decided to take the shouting in grace. She crossed her arms and closed her eyes "hmph."

Aki, despite his best interests, walked towards the couple, crunching a leaf and alerting Reina to his presence. She opened one eye to look towards him and shot him an unapproving glance "you're the one most injured out of all of us, Mrs. Kobayashi." she didn't take that standing down and glared down not at her accuser but at her husband "that's because this dumbass rode off before I could ask to ride with him. He knows I'm not good with physical stuff but he still went off on his own anyway!" Aki tried to argue back because he still didn't know better but as he would soon learn you can never convince Mrs. Kobayashi that her argument was wrong. "It's fine. You ended up alright didn't you?" "That's not the point you…" she couldn't come up with a bad word to call him.

She stormed off towards the clearing and left them alone together. "You probably shouldn't argue with her Aki." "why not?" a small smile creeped up on hazuki's face "when we do silly things like that with her, she becomes… really mad and you can't change her mind after that. You just have to go along with it." he whispered this next bit "she never really does anything about it anyway…" Aki, with his good hearing, took that to mean he didn't want Reina to hear, not that he didn't want Aki to hear so he spouted "oh just like me and…. Me and…" he scratched his head. "Sorry, I don't remember." He had gotten off topic and didn't want Aki to further push the topic of his wife so he didn't push for any more information about whoever this other person was.

"Alright, let's catch up with her, she's probably waiting for us." Aki didn't respond "Aki?" he broke out of his train of thought "yeah. Let's go!"

As the city became more clear, the three noted the very obvious trail leading out towards the mountain and Reina silently lamented the fact that they didn't just find the trail and walk along it like normal people

Aki, constantly looking left and right towards the shops was in a trance and the couple were happy to see the city once more as well, even if they were getting weird looks for being so dirty. Most just judged them to be homeless people and moved on and the three were fine with that.

"Let's see if I remember my way around here, yeah?" Aki fell out of his trance and looked back, moving back towards them "you've been here before mr. Kobayashi?" He grinned looking towards Aki "yeah, it used to be my home city." "Why did you leave?" His grin drooped "there was an… incident a while back and… we haven't come back since." aki didn't know what to say so he muttered a little 'oh' and moved back to the shops admiring every little detail.

Soon they arrived upon the location they had come to the city for and motioned Aki over. As he came over and looked towards the building, he frowned. He hadn't been really reading anything on the shop's windows so he didn't notice that everything was in a different language. "What does the sign say?" The couple looked slightly surprised "you.. can't read it?"

"No." Even if he didn't know anything about this world, he was still speaking their language. It came naturally to him after all. But the kobayashi's questioned this, he knew their language but he couldn't read it? That would be strange even if he didn't have amnesia.

They were caught off guard but both of them decided to shrug it off for now and answered his question "that's the police station. We're going here to see if the police station has any information on you." Aki seemed to stare off. "I don't mean to sound rude but… if we don't know my name, how will they figure out anything about me?"

"Even if they can't find anything on you, we can file what happened to you and the police can investigate if there are any similar files out there." Steam began to form out of his ears as he tried to run the idea through his head but he decided to stop thinking about it "let's just go." He speedwalked into the station.

Hazuki looked a bit surprised seeing the receptionist, she looked like the one he knew from years ago but he put memories of that aside to focus on what they were there for. "Hello, we're here to file a police report." The receptionist jumped from her chair and gathered her files from the floor "sorry! I've been out of it lately." Same personality as the one from back then as well

Hazuki was getting chills up his spine but he decided it would be best not to bring it up "so, you said you were here to file a police report?" Reina spoke up, noticing her husband's weird little fright at the receptionist, "yes. We found this kid severely injured outside our house." The receptionist looked Aki up and down "So what happened between now and then and why didn't you report it immediately?" Hazuki spoke up "her quirk allows her to heal injuries. As for why… we live far away from Hosu city and don't have access to a phone so we couldn't make any calls to the police about it." The receptionist began typing something and said "I'll see who's available to write down your file." Hazuki nodded and now they just had to wait.

The receptionist had been aggressively typing something for a while when she stood up from her seat "sorry about that you three. There were literally no cops available and I had to search the whole system to see who was in the area." They gave her awkward smiles "it's okay, we can wait as long as you need us to." She bowed towards us "I got a detective to come over here and write your file but he may give you… attitude so be careful."

The three heard a bell ring and cocked their heads towards the door. A man in a brown trench coat stood across from them. He was tired, his eye bags were showing and the lazy way he walked let everyone know how much energy he had left. "Are these three the ones?" He pointed towards them "yes." She didn't really wanna say more because she knew that when he acted like this, he was often more rude towards her. "Alright, follow me."

He led them towards an office with the tag labeled Tsukauchi and went inside. He held the door open for them and went in after. He sat at his chair on the opposite side of his table and asked them "What are you here for? She didn't really fill me in on the details." Another villain attack maybe? Had to have been a small one though if I wasn't alerted immediately. "We found this kid outside, severely injured. My wife has a healing quirk so all of his injuries were healed but…""but?" He put his pen to his lip. "He doesn't remember much of anything." Amnesia? "You guys suspect his memory loss is because of a villain attack?"

Aki was conflicted "villain attack? What does that mean?" I guess he really doesn't remember anything. It didn't hurt him to respond so he did "A villain attack is pretty self-explanatory, it's when a villain attacks you to obtain something of value." A light bulb popped over Aki's head "I see. I don't remember how it happened but I don't think that's it." "You sure?" "It's just a hunch." Tsukauchi noted this down.

"when you said he didn't remember anything, how much of everything did you mean?" Reina glanced down towards Aki "do you mind leaving the room for a second Aki? just stand outside for now." "Huh. Why?" She tried to give him a big smile "I have some adult things to tell the detective here." "Eh… fine." he looked back one last time before he left and noticed the kobayashi's smiling at him.

"So, what is it you're hiding from him?" She flinched at his quick uptake. "I just have some things I don't want him to hear." He dismissively stared at her "when we found him, he had several broken bones in his arms and legs… he was scratched all over and hazuki said all of the trees around had been broken." Can't have just been a hard fall. But that can't be it. "There's more going on here right?" "Yeah."

"When he woke up, he realized he didn't remember anything and… cried until my husband calmed him down. When observing one of our little fights he said something along the lines of 'just like me and someone else' but he couldn't remember who that someone else was."and? "Me and hazuki realized that this memory couldn't have just come from a fall. His injuries were fatal, sure, but…" tsukauchi wrote something down again "I get what you're saying. We'll flag this as a suspicious case and if we get any information we'll send it to your address."

She rubbed her shoulders "about that…" "huh." She looked everywhere but towards the detective "we live on the mountain." He squeezed his pen a little too hard when he heard that "on the mountain?" "Yeah."

"Look up our file." The detective looked concerned "you'll realize why we live up there when you see it." He scrunched his brows and took out his laptop "what are your names?" "Reina and Haruki kobayashi."

"Oh."

"I'll call some higher ups for you, see if i can get something sorted out." Reina, sitting from the one chair available to her, agreed. "Before we start this process though, we will need some basic information and I need to ask you some questions." "What about?" "I guess I'll start somewhere small. Does he remember what his name is?" She turned her head side to side "no. But, between us, we came up with a name that he liked: Aki." Tsukauchi nodded his head " I guess for a bigger question, I want to ask you if you'd be willing to take care of him?" Hazuki wasn't paying much attention before but his head shot up at tsukauchi's question. Looking at his wife's face, he already knew her answer "of course we would be willing to."

They had a brief discussion over Aki and his future and decided on a couple of things. The Kobayashi's would become his legal guardians and he would take their last name to make things easier for the system.

"About your housing though…"tsukauchi had thought deeply about this "yes?" "We can't get information to you quickly if you're living in the mountains, so what about a housing change?"

Tsukauchi's offer was very generous. He had offered them stay at a relatively decent apartment with rent taken care of, a decent amount of food provided, new clothes because they clearly needed it, and a small sum of cash for other expenses incurred during their stay. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for them and neither could refuse. They looked at each other once, silently agreeing on their course of action and said "We accept!"

Still nothing could come with no strings attached and the kobayashi's suspected this so they asked "are you sure this will be acceptable to your higher ups?" Tsukauchi gave them a small smile "you may not know because you've been gone so long but we now have a program specifically for this occasion. People suspected to be victims of unknown crimes are granted protection from the government. While we investigate, having victims on hand to recount what happened to them is useful in investigations and we can alert them to any changes in their case."

"They don't care that we're living with the victim?" Tsukauchi was quick to answer "for minors, exceptions are made quite easily." Actually- "how old is aki?" They stayed silent "we didn't ask him but he likely doesn't remember." Tsukauchi got up from his chair and grabbed his notebook "let's ask him now then."

Aki was observing the cops at work when he heard footsteps rapidly approaching him. It was the kobayashi's and the detective. He waved cheerfully at them, thankful that they had finally come back because he was getting bored. "Hey!" He stood up to greet them and noticed mrs. Kobayashi made a weird face at him " I know this may be a little abrupt but do you mind if… we become your guardians for a while?" Aki seemed dumbfounded for a second but quickly gave her a response "sure!"

The adults in the room almost keeled over before realizing they still had one more question to ask "you accepted that so easily? I guess now is not the time to ask about that." Aki clasped his hands together "I don't know where i'd go if not for you guys." Hazuki felt his heart warm up for a second but this wasn't the time to be sweet so he pushed that feeling off to the side and asked Aki "I have one more thing to ask you. Do you remember how old you are?" Aki crossed his arms over his chest, collecting his thoughts "I-…" a thought came to him "May 5th is my birthday I think." They gave him another second to think "and it's hazy but, I think I'm 13." Tsukauchi opened his note book and made a reminder to himself to put it onto aki's file when he got back into his office.

"I know you probably are curious why you woke up with no memories so we made a decision to live in the city. The police can tell us more easily if there are any updates than if we lived in the mountains." He kept up his cheery attitude not seeming to care at all what happened to him "I only lived there for a couple of days so I don't mind this! It was probably harder on you guys since you've lived up there for a while." It wasn't at all. We would have gone sooner if we could.

"Alright, enough chatter, it's too early to say now, with having no information on the case but this could take a while." The three of them were curious as to what he had to say so they waited for him to continue "now that we have an estimate on how old Aki is, do you want to get him into a school of some kind next year?" The kobayashi's eyed each other and made a silent decision but they still had to see what Aki wanted out of it "school! Sounds awesome. I want to go" Well that was settled quickly. "I'll have you worked into the system then. I'll make it so you can attend whatever school you want, within reason of course." Aki jumped into the air, his expression filled with delight "yay!!"

"Oh, there's one more thing I need to get you. Hold on" tsukauchi powerwalked somewhere else and brought back with him a set of keys and a phone that had been taken out of the package only a few moments prior. "What are those for?" He handed the items to Reina. "The key is for the apartment I'm going to give you and the phone is for communication between us." "But I thought you needed your higher up's approval for that?" Tsukauchi brought a finger to his lips "I do but that key is for when I run into situations like yours. I'm supposed not to give it out yet so keep it a secret for me will ya?" Reina had a sneaky expression on her face and drew closer to him "will do."

Haruki decided to breach the conversation to ask "what about the phone then? You just have those laying around too?" He made himself shift back into a normal expression "those are phones that were commissioned from the station and have all the information necessary for a cop to have. Everybody related to us gets one and you don't need permission to give them out." Hazuki whistled "y'all thought of everything didn't you?" He appreciated the gesture "yes. Oh getting back on topic, other than updates, the phone has a general map on it so you can locate your apartment. I'll send the location to you soon. Anyway see ya." Aki had to get the last word in though so he said "thanks a lot mr. Detective!" Tsukauchi saluted back "no problem kid."

Author notes:

This is the longest chapter yet lol. I promise they won't be almost 4k words next time.

I wasn't sure on what city to throw Gon into so threw him into the other city in mha I knew about and went with it. There probably isn't a mountain next to hosu but i'm taking some creative liberties here

Gon isn't actually 13 here but I had to make it work if I wanted him to attend U. A. So I made him remember it wrong.

Also, this whole switching perspectives thing might happen until Gon and Killua meet up again. Chapters are going to be pretty long so it shouldn't be too long.

If you got the receptionist reference, your a g.

Also for reference if you are confused aki = gon and shiro = killua. Gon will be exclusively referred to as aki for all chapters moving forward until he gets his memories back. Killua will still be referred to killua in outside narration but will be referred to shiro by other people
