He flew across the blue yonder, not as a bird or a plane, but as the superhuman "Devoted" Devan Preston. Now, Devan wasn't Superman, but he was kinda like him, except there was a difference between them.
Devan Preston was born on Earth, and he'd been an inhabitant of the planet from day one, he wasn't an alien from a doomed far-away planet. His hero path still started when he gained his powers, from flight to super strength, and he didn't gain them by any alien means in the slightest.
Today, just like every other day when he answered the call of hero's duty, Devoted Devan had just delivered deviant criminals to justice, and the police had the rest of their work cut out for them. He flew over the city, his cape flapping in the wind, heading home to his family.
Without having to worry about supervillains such as Hypno Joe, Devoted Devan's days had never been happier and simpler; His family was safe, and his son was happy with Gru's daughter Margo, and things between Devan and his wife, Susan, were nothing short of great. There was so much in the world to be satisfied with.
Devan flew over the hills, and soared above the streets of the neighborhood where he'd been living in for the past few years. His house was a block away from the establishment that was Gru's home, which technically once served as his evil lair. The blue-caped superhero made his descent, eager to settle in for the rest of the day...
...only to wind up finding someone waiting for him.
Now, Devoted Devan hadn't seen someone like him before, but never did he think he'd find some mustached guy in a white outfit with a red cape, and an 'O' symbol on the front of the costume. For a second, he was ready to assume he was looking at a wannabe Devoted Devan cosplayer, then he saw the guy was floating above the ground.
"Who. The heck. Are you?" Devan asked, "Is this some sort of super joke?"
"You know, we aren't that different, you and I..." The man remarked, "We're both alike, in terms of having the ability to fly, and you're obviously the tough type. Hopefully, I'm not rubbing you the wrong way by 'greeting you', Devoted Devan."
"Are you a superhero?" Devan asked, "You look superhero-y to me, you got the cape, and build of a superhero. If I were to assume, you're probably a new guy looking for a house to stay in, we could help you find one if you're up for buying a house. What's the 'O' meant to symbolize, and you haven't told me your name?"
The man chuckled. "My name is Nolan, Nolan Grayson, but some people just call me, Omni Man. And I'm not moving into the neighborhood, I didn't plan on doing that, I'm not even supposed to be in this world. However, you can thank a dimensional displacement anomaly for this, and I wanted a look at what you're made of."
Devan raised an eyebrow. "What kind of name is Omni-Man?" He inquired, "And I did not expect to find out that you're from another universe."
"Neither did I think you're an inhabitant from Earth with no 'secret alien origin'..." Omni-Man floated towards Devan, "...Your wife told me much about that, while we were talking. And you have a nice son, by the way, I have a son back home too, even though your kid doesn't have any powers."
"Rewind a little." Devan held up his hand, "Are you an alien? You mentioned me not having a secret alien origin as if you have one, kinda like that Superman guy."
"I'm a Viltrumite from Viltrum, and Viltrum is a mighty empire that spans vast stretches of the cosmos, and I am one of the Viltrumite Empire's fiercest warriors. I was sent to Earth to prepare it for conquest, but things shifted when I met a woman, and had my son Mark. And yet, I never thought I'd end up in this world, but here I am, having met your family and talking to you."
"It sounds like you're the evil super type if you're fighting for an empire that enslaves planets. Did you hurt my family?"
Omni-Man's face was blank, he looked down, then he looked up at Devan. "Your wife is okay, she's safe inside the house, I did my best to make sure she doesn't get in the way. Don't assume I harmed her, I'm not the guy who goes and hurts someone's wife. Your son, I can assure you, will be alright."
"What did you do to Alex?" Devan demanded.
"Nice name for a kid. He may not be my son, but that boy of yours was a... tough talker, shall we say?"
"What. Did. You. Do?"
Omni-Man smiled weakly. "He's in a basement... alive and well. Of course, how else was I going to find a way to make you face me, show me your strength? He may have been roughed up a little, probably spots a black eye, but I wasn't that rough..."
The Viltrumite held up a photo, showing it to Devan. Devan froze, seeing the image of his son, looking dusty with a bruise on his face and a small trace of blood in his nose region. Devan glared at Omni-Man, disgusted by what was even happening, nobody hurt his boy, and he was not going to let that fly.
Letting out a roar of fury, Devan lunged, and grabbed Omni-Man by the neck. He threw him into the air, and flew towards him, ready to confront the not-so mysterious superman from another dimension. Omni-Man did a flip in mid-air, locked eyes with the oncoming Devan, and flew towards him with outstretched red gloved fists.
It was rare for Devan to attack his foes with fury, but what Omni-Man was doing to Alex was awful, and he wasn't going to stand for it. At least this Viltrumite didn't hurt Devan's wife, but hurting his son was the big no-no here.
Devan ducked downward as he got closer to his opponent, avoiding a hard hook as it came his way. The blue cape-wearing super human maneuvered around, and attacked Omni-Man, striking him beneath the jaw. His attack dazed the mustached alien, and Omni-Man grunted, then he shook his head, and launched himself at Devan.
The brown-haired caped crusader grunted as Omni-Man barreled into him, bruising his back by a slight margin. He grimaced, and closed his eyes while holding back a yell as his foe streaked across the sky, taking Devan for the ride.
His cape suddenly flew over his head, and he felt himself spinning in the sky. Omni-Man's hold on him was absent, he'd released him, but Devan knew this fight wasn't over yet. He threw the cape off his face, restoring his vision, and wheeled around to confront the opposing superman again. His fist made contact with Omni-Man's face, knocking him back a few feet across the air.
"I didn't even feel the blow..." Omni-Man remarked.
"Don't think of it as a warm up, pal." Devan retorted, "No one hurts my son, even if it was just a bruise to the face and a slightly bloody nose."
"What happened to Alex could have been worse, especially since we Viltrumites are stronger than any human, and we can be more brutal than just bruised faces or partially-bloody noses. You're lucky I didn't aim to subject him to something far horrific..."
SLAM!
Devan punched Omni-Man in the mouth, making him splutter, before he could even finish his sentence. And he went all-in, knocking the Viltrumite around, and striking his every opening whenever he found one. Omni-Man fought back, trying to block Devan's strikes, and made an attempt to punch the devoted superhero out of the sky.
It felt like Devan's strength had increased by maximum, he was going to town, and letting this otherworldly powerhouse have it. He was going to incapacitate that Omni-Man, and then, he was going to tend to his son.
Now, their fight was occurring within the airspace of the city. Devan grabbed Omni-Man, and flew him towards one of the buildings. He punched him in the jaw, then he slammed him in the torso, and he increased speed before pinning Omni-Man against the side of a building. He glared at him, half-steaming, and half-irked.
"You have to be crazy, intruding in the neighborhood, and bruising my son while putting him in a basement just so you can have a match with Devoted Devan." Devan told him, he pointed to his head, "Think, Nolan! Why can't you go back to your universe, and pick a fight with someone else? All you're doing is messing with a hero just to be a troublemaking villain, and you messed with the wrong hero."
Omni-Man lowered his head with a sad smile. "I suppose I owe you an apology, and a surrender, Devan..." He said, "Rest assured, your son is still alive, and he is in the basement in a winery not far from here. Your wife, as I have told you, is also still alive. She is asleep after I... bonked her on the head, before I took Alex. Looks like I made a grave error in underestimating you..."
Just then, a vibrant multi-colored light flashed behind Omni-Man, and Devan released his hold on him, watching with surprise as a portal appeared, and the being he'd faced vanished through the newly-formed rift in time-and-space.
Omni-Man waved slowly, and Devan caught a glimpse of a twinkle in his eyes before the superhuman alien warrior vanished from the world completely.
Hopefully, he was heading back to his universe, and Devan could not begin to think of the possibility of Omni-Man winding up in another universe that wasn't his own, and giving that world's superhero more trouble. If there was one think to be thankful for, it was that Omni-Man hadn't shown his true full strength.
Now, it was time for Devan to look after his family. He smiled, taking a moment to relax, and then, he flew off to the champagne store, where Omni-Man had placed Alex in the basement. When that was taken care of, it would be time to relax at home after a day of hero duty...
The End
