Six months passed silently passed.
My magic lessons were going nicely, I could now use advanced water spells.
My magecraft research was proceeding smoothly as well. I sometimes wished my magic progress would be as quick as my magecraft. Magecraft was second nature to me-I had more than forty years of experience, after all.
I'm currently working on the teleportation spell I mentioned a while ago.
My mystic code's progress was going far too slow-it'll take another six months to finish it.
That aside, my eyes felt...off lately. They itched when I looked at the night sky. Was it because I stayed up past midnight to work on my magecraft? I don't think so-this itchiness wasn't fatigue. Another thing was that my ice spells had become more powerful than normal, and my eyes burned when I cast them. I had already examined myself years ago and found out my eyes mutated. They contained magic circuits of their own. I had a pair of mystic eyes, but I didn't know what they did. No matter how hard I tried to activate them, they never seemed to do anything. The best effect I got was a slight itch and a burning sensation. My eyes have been acting up lately, maybe they finally developed enough for me to use them? Time will tell, I guess.
...
A few weeks later, I became miserable.
The itch in my eyes had escalated so much that I rarely stopped rubbing them. When I looked at water, it felt like my eyes were on fire. I couldn't bare it any longer, I had to tell my parents. I approached Zenith when she was cooking dinner.
"Mother?"
Zenith looked up from the vegetable she was peeling, "Yes?"
"My eyes don't feel right."
My mother overreacted, yelling at my father to call a doctor, and began casting detoxification spells on me. When the doctor came and looked me over, he couldn't find any problems with my eyes. The only thing wrong was the redness from my scratching. Roxy examined me as well, but she couldn't find anything either. The doctor just told my parents to give me some herbs that benefited the eyes and it should go away. Obviously, no matter what herbs they gave me, my eyes continued to itch.
I began to feel a swelling sensation building up in my eyes, as if they were going to pop out of their sockets. It was like a dam holding back tons of water, ready to crack and break at any time.
My parents were worried out of their minds, even stopping their nighttime activities. Zenith and Roxy constantly cast detoxification spells on me, but it wasn't much help. If anything, it was making me feel worse.
...
The dam burst.
It happened when Roxy was telling me about Demon Eyes, the Mystic Eyes of this world. How ironic.
"Demon Eyes refer to special eyes that have abilities associated with them. It is unknown how many types there are." Roxy said.
I simply nodded. It was hard to concentrate on anything with my eyes acting up.
"The most common kind is the 'Magic Power Eye,' which allows the user to see the direct flow of mana."
"So it's like the Superds' third eye?" I asked.
"Yes, kind of like that," Roxy answered. "You can get Demon Eyes in a variety of ways, a blessed child could be born with one, but it's more commonly known that one can be bestowed a demon eye by the great demon emperor."
"Oh, who's the great demon emperor?" I asked.
"Her name is-"
"What?!"
I had to cut Roxy off. Forgive me, sensei.
I felt the dam burst. The pressure that had been building in my eyes released itself. It felt like my eyes were being burned by lava. I squeezed my eyes shut as tightly as I could, holding my head in my hands.
"Rudy?!" I heard Roxy's alarmed yelp, "Uh-uh. Don't go anywhere. I'll go get Mrs. Zenith."
Very funny, Roxy, my eyes are being roasted alive here. I suddenly realized something. I felt this way before. This felt like my magic circuits activating, but much more painful. Were my mystic eyes going out of control? I was rolling around in agony as my parents rushed into my room.
"Rudy?!" Zenith was first. "What happened?" She picked me up and attempted to cast a detoxification spell.
"Gah!" That made the pain worse.
Zenith seemed to have noticed my scream as she stopped casting her spell. I felt Zenith pass me over to someone else to carry, must be Paul, Roxy was too short to hold me in her arms. Suddenly, I felt the strong urge to open my eyes, so I did. As I opened them, the first thing I saw was my palms. I noticed frost creeping up my fingers. They abruptly felt cold and numb. I quickly removed my palms from my face, they were covered with a thin layer of ice. I looked at my cup on the desk. The rune "Isa" flashed, and the water in the cup froze instantly, the cup itself was also covered in frost. In the corner of my eye, I noticed my mother looking at the cup with a shocked expression. I didn't dare look her way. Even an idiot could have figured it out now. My eyes froze everything they looked at. I tried as hard as I could not to look away from the frozen cup, but the frost kept expanding. It was creeping onto the table now. I began to panic. How do I stop these stupid eyes?! I don't want to recreate Frozen!
"Rudy!" Roxy's voice cut off my internal panic, "Control your mana! Stop feeding it to your eyes."
What? That wasn't going to help me. My eyes had magic circuits of their own. In other words, they had their own Mana pools! How am I supposed to stop feeding Mana to them?! Wait. People can't manipulate Mana when they are unconscious. With that in mind, I summoned a simple stone bullet and shot myself in the head. The last thing I heard was my mother yelling something at my father, and I slipped into unconsciousness.
...
When I woke up, I had some kind of cloth wrapped around my eyes. I guessed my parents did this to prevent me from freezing anything. I slowly sat up in bed and heard some shuffling-presumably, my parents had noticed I'd woken up.
"Rudy! You're awake?" I heard Paul's voice coming from my right.
I nodded my head. Why did my eyes still hurt? I felt someone embrace me; from her scent, I could tell it was Zenith.
"Don't you ever scare me like that again." Her voice was shaky like she was scared out of her mind.
I would be too if I had just witnessed my own child freeze something with just a glance and then proceed to knock himself out with a hunk of rock.
"Rudy? How do you feel now?" Roxy's asked.
It seemed all three of them were in this tiny cramped room. I just hope they didn't discover the silkworks under my bed.
"I guess I'm alright. My eyes still hurt, though." The pressure in my eyes was gone, but they still stung.
"You just had a Demon Eye activate. Though I never heard of someone experiencing extreme pain in the prosses. It shouldn't hurt if you are born with one." Roxy muttered.
I sighed. I'm just that unlucky, huh? Well, I can't have this blindfold on me for the rest of my life. I reached up to take the blindfold off.
"Gah!" The light was blinding. It felt like staring into the sun.
"Rudy!" The three people in the room all screamed at once.
'Jinx.' I mused in my head.
"I'm fine!" I waved my arms around to emphasize my point, "The light caught me off guard, that's all!"
My left eye seemed just fine, but my right eye seemed extremely sensitive for some reason. I grabbed the blindfold and put it over my right eye, I'll have to let it slowly adjust to the light. I looked around the room-Paul looked like he didn't know what to do, Zenith had tears in her eyes and looked paler than a ghost, and Roxy looked ready to faint at any moment. I shifted and stood up, with the protests of my parents and teacher, and stretched. Everything was fine-besides my delicate right eye, I felt normal.
"I think you should rest a bit more, son. Who knows what effects that eye of yours could have." Paul told me.
"Yes, Demon Eyes are hard to control. It could be dangerous." Zenith said.
Roxy was in the corner of the room, muttering to herself. My parents didn't seem to believe me, I sighed in exasperation. Parents were worrywarts, no matter which universe you went to. My previous mother didn't let me touch mystic codes for a week after I accidentally blew one up.
"See? I'm-" I took off the blindfold, but as soon as my right eye opened, I felt a pulse of Mana, and the blindfold was immediately covered with a thick layer of ice. I quickly closed my right eye and used fired magic to melt and dry it before covering my eye once more. My parents looked even more panicked now, and Roxy had straight up fainted. I rubbed the bridge of my nose. This eye was going to be a pain.
...
It took me a whole week to master this stupid eye.
Roxy said it was incredible to master one so quickly at my age. Maybe it was because I was born with it? One interesting thing to note was that both my eyes turned blue when I used my Demon Eye, and my right eye's pupil would be replaced by a dark purple snowflake. I could still see out of it, though. The eye seemed to have the passive effect of better vision when it was cold out.
My eyes, unlike normal human eyes, generated heat on their own so they wouldn't freeze when activated. That was why I felt like my eyes were being roasted. Now that I've gotten the hang of this eye, it was pretty convenient to have a single-action spell ready and waiting for me to unleash it. Most people wouldn't think I could freeze their feet to the ground by just looking at them.
"Are you sure you're alright now, Rudy?" My father was sure I was fine, but my mother still worried about me having this eye.
"Yes, mom. I'm sure. I know how to use this eye now." I understand where she was coming from. I might freeze someone solid if I wasn't careful.
"Just be careful, okay?" Zenith said as she ruffled my hair.
It was nice having people who cared about you. I spent half of my past life living like a solitary mole.
...
One week later, my eyes started acting up again.
The swelling sensation and itching returned. Luckily, there wasn't any burning this time. I ran to tell my parents as soon as I felt something wrong. They overreacted even more than the first time. I was panicking a little as well-my eyes already activated, so why were they activating again? My parents forbade me from going out and put me in my room. They were afraid my eyes would go out of control again. I didn't blame them; the first time was far too scary. I continued to have classroom-style lessons with Roxy, though. And my parents would drop in and check on us once in a while, mainly to see if I had frozen Roxy solid. With how much time I stare at her, she would probably be the first thing I froze if my eyes acted up.
...
...
I heard my parents talking to Roxy one night. They'd been extremely worried ever since my eyes started acting up. I was scared as well-what if next time I froze someone? I leaned against the wall to listen to their conversation. I know it's rude, but I was curious, okay?
"-Are you sure he's going to be fine?" Zenith asked.
"I don't know," Roxy replied, "There is no known case of someone being born with an eye that freezes everything it looks at. I didn't even know there was a Demon Eye that could do that."
"What are we going to do about this?" Paul asked, "Rudy's just a child. Can he really control that eye?"
"Yes." Roxy sounded so sure about that, "People born with Demon Eyes can usually control them. It shouldn't cause any problems. The best thing to do is cover the eye with an eye patch until he gains full control."
That sounded reasonable, but wouldn't I just freeze the eye patch?
"If he has some control, why is his eye acting up again?" Zenith asked.
"It's probably because he can't control it completely yet, it should stop after a few months," Roxy said.
I sighed. I didn't know much about the Mystic Eyes of this world. Why were they called "Demon Eyes" anyway? I wasn't a demon, but I still had one. I'll have to try and make a mystic eye killer, I wasn't keen on waiting a few months.
"Huh?" Why was my room brighter all of a sudden? And why was the light green?
I looked around the room, but I found no light source. Then I noticed it was my left eye emitting the green light. Green? What did green have to do with ice? My eyes turned blue when activated. The green light suddenly got brighter, and my eyes felt like they were being pulled out of their sockets.
"What the hell?!"
Why? Why activate again? I thought I had control over these damn eyes! I heard footsteps coming this way, and, soon after, the creaking of the door to my bedroom. Three pairs of footsteps ran into my room.
"What's wrong?"
"Huh?"
"What happened?"
I heard a female gasp as I clutched my face in my hands.
"His eyes are going out of control again!" Roxy yelled.
"What do we do?!" Paul asked.
"There isn't much we can do. There isn't a magical implement that can suppress Demon Eyes." Crap. I'll have to invent one myself. "We can only wait until the eye settles down." Roxy continued. "The best thing is to cover his eyes."
I heard Zenith tell Lilia to get a blindfold and some warm water. Then she picked me up and placed me in her lap. "It's okay, Rudy. Everything's fine. Calm down. Everything's fine." She kept whispering reassuring words into my ear.
I was thankful, but it didn't help the pain. I suddenly had the strong urge to open my eyes again. I didn't want to-I didn't have the blindfold yet-what if I froze Zenith? But the urge was too strong, I quickly turned my face away from her and opened my eyes. A literal magic circle appeared in front of my left eye, it flashed gold before vanishing. The pain suddenly vanished, and I thought it was finally over. I relaxed in my mother's arms, breathing heavily as I got my senses together. What was that? I didn't freeze anything-that was good-but what was that magic circle?
"Uhh...Zenith? Roxy?" Paul's stammered, "You might want to come to see this."
My mother lifted me and carried me in her arms as she walked to the window where Paul was standing flabbergasted.
"What is that?!" He asked.
I heard Roxy gasp beside me and I saw my mom's eyes widen. I looked out the window as well, and I didn't expect what I saw. A magic circle-made of purple stars and golden lines-was floating in the sky. It looked identical to the one that appeared in front of my left eye. My eyes flashed green, and the circle in the sky shattered. A second later, lights began streaking across the sky. A small meteor shower lit up the dark expanse of the night. My parents watched the shower with their mouths hanging open, and was Roxy foaming at the mouth? I sighed. This was "great." I had an eye that froze everything and one that summoned meteors. How did this make any sense?! What do ice and meteors have in common?!
...
After that stunt, my parents put me in my room and observed me until they were sure everything was fine. Why did I feel like a lab rat? At least my eyes felt completely fine now. I spent the time cooped up in my room to experiment with my left eye. It seemed the meteors I summoned with this eye were far too small to actually impact the earth, they all burned up in the atmosphere. It was a sight to behold when activated, but it had no actual combat use. I guess you could have a more romantic date with your girlfriend if you summoned a meteor shower, but it'll probably get stale after a while.
Both my eyes turned green when this power activated, and my left eye had white dots swirling in the iris that looked like a galaxy, with the pupil being the black hole at the center. After this activation, I was sure my eyes were fine, but my parents still kept a close eye on me. They gave me a white eye patch to cover my right eye. It was the more dangerous eye since it could freeze anything, living beings included. My left eye just summoned some lights in the sky, so it was harmless when activated. I was finally allowed to go back to my normal routine. I missed practicing spells and working on my cloak in the dead of night. I even missed the stupid training regimen Paul had me do.
...
...
Another month passed. My eyes had settled down. I now had some control of both of them. They still acted up sometimes, though, so I couldn't take off the eye patch just yet. My parents and Roxy visibly let out a breath of relief when I told them that. My eyes had some interesting features. For example, they only worked when both of them were active. I tried covering one of my eyes and activating my ice powers, but all I got were a few snowflakes. Though the effect was much more prominent when I used my right eye, rather than my left. The same thing happened when I used my meteor summoning ability. When I only used my right eye, I couldn't even summon one shooting star-the magic circle appeared, but nothing happened, but I could call forth a single meteor with my left.
To sum up, both my eyes had the frost and meteor summoning ability, though my left eye was more in-tune with meteor summoning, and my right was better at freezing things solid. When activated, they support each other, increasing the power and effect.
I also wondered what would happen if both my powers were to activate at the same time. My eyes activated when the magic circuits inside them were turned on-that's how Mystic Eyes work-but the circuits inside my eyes were... connected. For example, if I wanted to freeze something solid, I'd send a command to my eyes telling them to activate. Since I want to freeze something, the eye dominant in that-my right-would receive the signal. Its magic circuits would activate, attempting to freeze everything I looked at, but it wouldn't have enough Od to do so. So it would will my other eye's circuits to activate, using the Od they generated to complete the spell. The same thing happens with the meteor summoning.
To use both powers at once, I'll need to flood my eyes' magic circuits with Od at the same time. It took a long time to figure out how to do that-about three weeks-but the results were promising. When both powers activated, they summoned a comet to slam onto the face of the Earth. It wasn't a comet, per se, more like a hunk of frozen gas and dust the size of my fist, but isn't that what comets were? They were just hunks of ice that got too near the sun.
After a bit of thought, I figured out why this hunk of ice could reach the Earth's surface while the meteoroids couldn't. My left eye summoned the ice chunk and controlled where it landed, and my right eye constantly coated it with more ice so it wouldn't burn up. I didn't know how my right eye could freeze something it couldn't see, but maybe it was just a function of my Mystic Eyes. Who knows, maybe they were meant to be used this way instead of being a miniature refrigerator or a useless light show.
Meteoroids enter the atmosphere at speeds typically of 12-40 km/s relative to the Earth, much fast than his stone bullets. I'll need to train my accuracy with these comets-if I could hit someone with one, it would be an instant win. Or is it kill? Maybe I shouldn't hit people with things below -220 degrees Celcius going at 40 kilometers per second.
...
...
Another few months went by.
My magic lessons were proceeding apace. I could now use advanced magic from all different branches of magic.
All without incantations, of course.
Compared to ordinary training, advanced magic was like picking one's nose. By which I mean there were a lot of ranged attacks and they felt pretty awkward to use. What was I going to do with the ability to make it rain over a large area? But then I remembered how, after a prolonged drought, Roxy had made it rain over the wheat field, to the great joy of the villagers. I'd been at home at the time, so this was all stuff I'd heard from Paul.
Evidently, Roxy had handled multiple requests from the townsfolk and had been solving their problems. If I was some perverted shut-in in my past life, this would probably be where I start imagining how Roxy dealt with their problems in an overly dramatic, loli-ish way. But I wasn't.
"I knew you were the sort of person who liked helping people, Miss Roxy!" I said.
"It's not exactly that. I'm doing this to earn money on the side."
"You get paid for doing stuff like that?"
"Of course."
My first instinct was to write her off as greedy, but the townspeople seemed to accept her terms. They'd never had anyone who could do that sort of thing for them before, and they deeply appreciated Roxy for it. I guess this was what they called "give and take." I'd been thinking about this the wrong way.
The idea of helping someone out in a bind without asking for anything in return was a very Japanese one. It was customary to get compensated for that sort of thing. It just made sense. Granted, I did live like a mole in my past life, so I didn't help anyone. Hahahahahaha...
...
...
A few weeks later, my parents discovered my secret.
It had been a good and productive few weeks. My magecraft studies were going nicely; I strengthened the bounded field around our house; and made a few discoveries with runes. My mystic code was almost finished-I already finished the cloak, all that was left was to enchant it, draw some magic circles onto it, and decorate it a little. I'm still wearing the white eye patch my parents gave me. My eyes still act up once in a while.
Nothing was going wrong so far, I guess that's why I let my guard down.
...
As I said before, I made a few discoveries with runes.
I tried carving them with Mana rather than Od, and it worked. But carving them with Mana took a lot more time-about three or four times longer than usual, and the results were half as effective. It seemed the "waste" energy in Mana prevented runes from showing their true potential. I guess this was why all druids were wiped out-runes were weak in combat in this world. Or maybe I was wrong about the runes of this world being the same as the ones I know. Maybe their shape was different. I still practiced carving them with Mana, though-just in case I make some discovery.
I sighed, "Why do I force myself to do meaningless things..." I muttered as I added the rune "Sowilo" to a rune chain carved on a wood plank. The chain proceeded to glow with a light similar to sunlight.
I sighed once more. When I carved rune chains with Mana, the effects produced were different. This chain was supposed to light the wood on fire, not make it into a magical flashlight! Why!? Why was carving runes with Mana such a pain?! I took a deep breath. It's fine. I'll figure things out eventually. This is a parallel world, so things would differ from my old world. I snapped my fingers, and the rune chain vanished. I looked out the window-it was becoming dark. I guess I spent longer than I realized carving runes onto wood boards. I picked up the wooden board, what if I replace the "Sowilo" with "Kaunaz" this time?
"Rudy! It's time for our-"
"Ah!"
I was so focused on runecraft I forgot Roxy's lesson starts soon. Forgive me, sensei. I was startled, so I reflexively swiped my hand in the air. I was naturally good at casting runes, and I just spent the last hour casting chain after chain, so my memory was refreshed. With all those factors combined, I accidentally cast an ice-based rune chain. The runes appeared as soon as my hand swiped the air. They glowed icy blue for a moment before shooting ten icicles at my blue-haired teacher, who barely had any time to use the books she was carrying to defend herself. The icicles impacted the book but were too blunt to do any real damage. As Roxy lowered the book she held to her face, we both looked at the floating symbols in the air, obviously carved by yours truly. There was only one thing that entered my mind.
"F*CK!"
...
"So you saw these symbols in your dreams?" Roxy asked.
I nodded.
"And you just happened to draw them in a specific pattern that produces icicles despite the chances?" I nodded again, not meeting Roxy's eyes.
This was the lie I came up with: I just happened to see some weird symbols in my dream and decided to carve them randomly, accidentally getting the icicle effect. Roxy looked like she didn't believe me. But to her, what other explanation could there be? She certainly didn't know I was a magus from another world.
Roxy sighed. "Great. I have a druid for a student," She muttered. "What's next? Will he suddenly start teleporting?"
"Umm...are those symbols runes, Miss Roxy?" I asked. It's better to play dumb.
"Yes, Rudy, they are. I don't know why you can see them in your dreams, but they are runes."
"Is it bad that I can see them?"
"No, it's just unusual. That's all." Roxy said, "We'll have to talk to your parents about this. Come on."
And Roxy dragged me to my parents' room. I knew they weren't going to scold me-it was just an accident. I'll just apologize to Roxy and it'll be all good. After a bit of debating, shouting, and me casting a few runes, my parents and Roxy decided these runes weren't harmful. It was best to let me practice and discover more secrets. I am literally the last person on this planet that can cast them, so it wouldn't be right to limit my growth. That aside, Roxy also asked if I could show her some runes so she could cast them herself. Being the gentlemen I am, obviously complied with a maiden's wish.
...
...
One day, out of the blue, I decided to ask Roxy, "Would it be better if I called you 'Master' instead of just 'Miss'?"
Roxy scrunched up her face awkwardly.
"No, probably best not to. I'm sure you'll easily surpass me soon enough."
I had enough talent to be better than Roxy? It was enough to make me blush.
"After all, it'd be weird to call someone whose powers were inferior to yours 'Master,'" Roxy added.
"I don't think it's weird."
"Well, it'd be weird for me. I'd never outlive the shame of having someone who's clearly better than me referring to me as 'Master.'"
Ah. Was that what this was all about, then?
"Are you saying that because you got stronger than your own master, Miss Roxy?"
"Listen, Rudy. A master is someone who says they have nothing else they can teach you, but still butts in with their advice on each thing you do."
"You wouldn't do that, though, Miss Roxy."
"I might."
"Even if you did, I'd be honored."
Roxy always looked pretty satisfied with herself whenever she advised me on things; I probably had quite the grin on my face when plying her with compliments.
"Oh, no. If I became that resentful of my own student's talents, there's no telling what I might blurt out."
"Like what sort of things?"
"Stuff like how I'm just a filthy demon, or how you're just some country hick."
Wow. Did Roxy seriously just say that to me? I felt sort of bad for her. Being discriminated against wasn't great, after all. But I guess that's what you get when there's a hierarchy in your relationship with someone.
"It'll be fine," I said. "Just act like you're better than me!"
"I'm not going to act all haughty and superior just because I'm older! I'm just not comfortable having a master-student relationship with such an imbalance of talent!"
She shot me down real quick, huh? It looked like my bond with my master had taken a turn for the worse. In my mind, I decided that I'd still think of her as my master regardless. After all, she was a girl who still had some traces of youth and could properly teach me whatever I couldn't by reading.
….
So, what do you all think? Not bad, I hope. I apologize if there are any mistakes. I am only a thirteen-year-old.
Anyways, Please like, share, follow, and comment.
As always, good luck with your game of life.
