Sutton had been working at the magazine rack for 2 years now, it wasn't a bad job, it gave her something to do and some spending money since everything else was paid off. She also had another income that paid the bills. She didn't mind the job she kind of liked it. It was placed on a busy corner attached to a building with just enough room on the end for a bunch of magazines and newspapers. Most people were always in a hurry when they stopped by to grab their daily newspaper or their weekly magazine. So the normal customer would barely pay her any mind and she liked it. Sutton had worked hard to go unnoticed by most people. It made getting through life easier.

It was one of those warm days that didn't have much of a breeze. What little wind that did occasionally come was of no help. Sutton was thankful she pulled her hair up into a messy bun before leaving the house. The little wisp that hung loose from the bun was damp from sweat. The skirt she wore was one of her favorites, the print was that of the galaxy yet very light and great for this warm weather. The black tank she wore was one of the few shirts that went with the skirt that had some scribble across her chest. Everything breathed in this miserably warm day as she sat in the fold-out chair that was partially covered in shade from the umbrella that was set up.

Sutton looked up from the book she was reading to see one of her regulars approaching. Secretly he was her favorite. He was an older gentleman with graying hair and on most days a 5 o'clock shadow. He always wore loud printed shirts with his shorts and sandals. "See you are staying cool." He smiled at her.

"Trying to at least."

Retrieving a newspaper he read the words on her tank. "Everybody's dead, Dave." He looked up at her confused by the words.

"It's from the British comedy TV show called Red Dwarf." She nervously spoke.

Reaching into his pocket. "I don't know the show but you look good today." He winked at her as he paid.

Sutton blushed profusely at the compliment taking his money. She was too shy to say anything back let alone a thank you as he walked away. And that was how most of their conversations went the 2 years she's been there. He'd sometimes ask about her clothing and yet never said anything mean about the nerdy stuff she wore.

The next day Sutton sat in her chair reading her book. "Nice flowers. From your boyfriend?" The familiar voice said.

Looking up she saw him, closing her book as she got up. "No, it's from one of the regulars, an early birthday present since he and his wife are going out of town tomorrow." She stood up.

"The boyfriend waiting till tomorrow to go all out?"

Shaking her head. "I don't have a boyfriend." She shyly admitted.

Sam's jaw dropped. "You're pretty. You should have a line of men around the corner for you to pick from."

"You're too nice." She blushed. "But I don't have luck with guys."

"That can't be true."

"It is and I can prove it. I've been working here for 2 years and you've been getting a newspaper from me the entire time. You meet a group of friends at Carlitos a few times a week and the few times you've picked up your phone I've caught your name. Your name is Sam by the way. You are one of the few people who comment on my nerdy clothes yet are never mean to me about what I wear. Even for someone like me who's in their 30s. Yet the entire time we have briefly spoken you've never asked for my name."

Sam was at a loss for words, this had never happened to him before. "I don't know what to say."

Handing him the daily newspaper he always got. "It's ok, happens to me all the time. Especially working here where people are usually in a hurry and just want to grab a paper or magazine and go on their way." A few people approached the register to pay for some magazines ending the two's conversation.

Sam took the paper feeling horrible that this entire time, how has he never gotten her name before? It was made worse when she pointed it out to him.

The next day Sutton was picking up some food at Carlitos. Her birthday was one of the few days she requested off, other than that she was always at work. Working most holidays and everything. "There you are! I went to the magazine rack and you weren't there." Sam stood next to her by the bar where she waited.

"I took my birthday off." She softly spoke.

Leaning on the bar. "Big plans?"

"No, just getting some food from here to take back to my place so I can continue my marathon of Mad Men at home."

"That is how you are spending your birthday?"

Thanking the waiter who brought her the food she ordered. "It's what I've always done for my birthday. Binge-watching something or spending the day reading the book I've been excited to read."

"You were that shy girl in school whom everyone either made fun of or forgot about," Sam stated.

"I haven't been in school for years but ya. Thanks for the reminder." Leaving the restaurant.

Sam caught up with her outside of Carlitos. "I'm sorry. Let me make it up to you."

"You don't have to. I've seen you at Carlitos with women. I know you probably have some pretty leggy blonde that you need to get to."

"You have kept me in a good supply of newspaper and fun conversations, despite me never getting your name. At least let me take you out to dinner for your birthday."

"You don't have to, honestly."

Crossing his arms. "I'm taking you out tonight. Every lady deserves to be spoiled on her birthday."

Blushing Sutton grinned. "Ok."

"Fantastic. What's your address so I can pick you up at 7?" Writing it down on the back of her receipt. "Now the only thing to make this moment better is a name," Sam said as he placed the address in his pocket.

"Sutton."

"You mean all this time we've talked I never got that beautiful name till now? There is something seriously wrong with me" Sam grinned seeing her cheeks get red like a tomato.

Sam was going to be at the house any minute as Sutton did one last look over before the mirror. She wore a spaghetti-strapped plum-colored baby doll dress with black tights and black ankle wedge shoes. It was the most dressed up she'd ever been in her life as she tried to suppress her nerves. The entire time Sutton felt this was some mean trick like in Never Been Kissed.

When it was 5 after that feeling of dread grew worse till she heard the doorbell. Taking a deep breath she went to answer it. "You showed up."

"Of course, I would. I'm a man of my word." Looking her up and down. "And I glad I am, you look divine."

Twisting her hands within each other. "Really? I figured when it was 5 after that you decide it wasn't worth it."

Sam saw the worried look she had. "Oh, sweetheart I wouldn't dream of it." Holding the door open for her. "Now, are you ready?" She grabbed her purse off the small table by the door as her response.

Sutton's eyes were wide as the 2 walked into the restaurant. She was completely memorized by the place, slowly doing a circle taking it all in. "Oh. My. Word." Looking over to Sam. "I can't believe you took me to Amara at Paraiso?! I thought I would never in my lifetime ever get a chance to eat here."

"I told you. Every lady deserves to be spoiled for her birthday."

"But I'm just the person who you chat with for a few moments while you get your paper. I figured you were going to take me somewhere like the Sizzler. This is where you take a date that you really, really like."

Sam couldn't help but laugh. "Sizzler! Someone as beautiful as you should never be taken to Sizzler." Going over to the host behind the podium. "Sam Axe."

Sutton felt Sam's hand on the small of her back as he guided her to their table. He pulled out her chair before taking a seat next to her. She was still in awe of where they were. "Here are your menus for tonight." The host placed the menus on the table before them. "Would you like to hear the wine specials?"

"I'm good with a glass of white Zinfandel." Sutton softly spoke.

"No wine for me. I'll take Johnny Walker on the rocks." Sam looked over to the woman next to him. He couldn't believe he never noticed her before. He had talked to her countless number of times yet never once did he take an actual glance at her.

Sutton leaned forward motioning for Sam to lean forward too. "Have I thanked you for this?"

"Numerous times on the drive up here." He laughed. "Why don't you tell me about yourself?"

"I'm not really that interesting. When my grandparents passed away I got their house which I now live in. Then when my parents passed away a few years ago I started renting it out so that money pays for the utilities and stuff for my place. The job at the magazine rack pays for everything else like my necessities and stuff." They thanked the waiter when they brought the drinks and then Sam placed an order for the two of them. "I don't know much about you, like what you do for a living."

Taking a sip of his drink. "I'm in the business of helping those who need it. The people I meet at Carlitos are the group I'm a part of that helps those desperate individuals."

"Now that makes sense why you meet there so often. I couldn't figure out why you guys met up so much. Though when it was slow at the magazine shop and you guys sat outside. I'd have fun making up conversations in my head as you guys spoke."

Glancing over his glass at her. "Really?"

"I know it's weird, I'm weird. I can guarantee by the end of this you'll probably regret taking me to dinner and find somewhere else to get your newspaper." Glancing down to her lap.

"Weird can be fun."

"You are just being nice because it's my birthday and you didn't know my name till this afternoon."

Sam reached out brushing some hair from Sutton's face. "You need to learn to take a compliment."

"It's kind of hard to take them when you are not used to getting them."

Wrapping a strand of her hair around his finger. "So again, I say weird can be fun. You say thank you."

Sutton blushed while softly smiling. "Thank you."

When their food was brought out Sam couldn't help but see how genuinely happy Sutton was. It was like when they first walked into the restaurant. He was used to being with women who were used to being taken to places like this. That he forgot that not everyone has had the luxury of the finer things in life. He found himself enjoying seeing the excitement on her face over these little things he took for granted and wanting to see more.

"What do you think of the food?" Sam asked.

Swallowing the bite that she took. "This is amazing. I've never had duck before."

"Never?"

Shaking her head. "Never, but I'm a fan now."

"We need to get you out more."

Getting some more food on her fork. "I do get out. Just nowhere fancy like this."

Watching her. "I have a feeling that is going to change."

Their waiter walked up to them to check on how things were going. "Would you like a refill on your drinks?"

Sutton shook her head. "I'll take some water please."

"It's your birthday, have as much wine as you like," Sam told her.

"I'm good honestly. I'm not for drinking anyways, one or two is usually it for me."

Sam looked over to the waiter. "I'll take another Johnny Walker." After the drinks were brought out Sam took a few sips before excusing himself to use the restroom. When he returned he found Sutton nervously looking around. "Is everything ok?"

"Yes, it's just when you left to go to the bathroom I got a little nervous that you ditched me."

Sam turned towards her. "You need to hear me when I tell you I'm not like whoever made you this insecure. I'm many things. But ditching a pretty lady at a nice restaurant, especially on her birthday isn't one of them." Sutton went to say something when the waiter showed up with a small chocolate cake with two forks and a candle in the middle. Sam smiled seeing her face light up. "Make a wish."

"Wish for what? All I've ever wanted was someone to do something nice for me for my birthday and you have." Sutton looked over at him.

"Didn't you're parents ever do anything special?"

"My mom would buy a day-old cake and only allowed me to have one friend over. If she and my dad didn't have to work late. Most of the time they'd just forget."

Moving the plate closer to her. "That should have never happened."

"It's ok. It was a long time ago."

"You deserved better."

"Honestly it's fine. It's in the past now." Sutton looked over to the cake before she closed her eyes while taking a breath and blew the candle out.

Grabbing the second fork. "Did you wish for anything?"

"Now if I told you it wouldn't come true." Taking a bite of dessert.

40 minutes later the two were leaving the restaurant. "So I can take it you had fun." Sam opened the car door for her.

"Seriously this is the most fun I've ever had." Climbing into the car. Sam soon joined on the driver's side. "I'm having the best birthday ever."

Sutton invited Sam in when he walked her up to the house. Sam looked around this time when he entered her home. It wasn't what he thought her place would look like, it was more. The place of course looked like that of a single person, it was filled with knickknacks like action figures still in the box and built Lego stuff that he wasn't too familiar with. As he looked around Sam stopped in front of a built-in shelf with handmade dioramas the size of shoe boxes. "I made those. I even sell some on Etsy. They do well on there."

"These are amazing." He eventually found the one Sutton made of Sam and the others sitting outside of Carlitos. There was Sam in one of his many loud shirts sipping on a mojito, Michael with a pair of sunglasses holding a cell phone to his ear, Fi in a beautiful sundress flirting with the waiter, and Jesse chowing down on a burger. There were little people scattered around sitting at other tables, walking up and down the sidewalk. There were even a few cars parked. "Is this me and my friends?"

Chewing on her lip. "Yes, I made it a while back. I do a lot of people-watching at the magazine rack job. It's weird I know."

"Maybe at first but it's amazing. The detail you put into these things is astonishing."

"Thanks. Some of the ones I've made can light up and move too." Sutton went to the one next to the one Sam was looking at and flipped a switch behind the diorama. The stars of the night sky lit up as the lake next to the castle had a tentacle reach up out of the water. Even the windows of the castle lit up "This took me some time to do. Only because it took me a long time to figure out how to connect the wiring for the sky, the giant squid, and the windows in Hogwarts to be all on one thing. So when you turned the switch on it turned everything on. I've been trying to find a way to work with solar panels in the back or something. That way I can have it as battery operated and solar panel so you don't go through so many batteries to have it on or have it plugged in wasting electricity."

Watching the tentacle move up and down a few times. "You have a talent."

"Again, thank you. What I'd like to do one day is sell them at Comic-Con in Orlando. But I'm too scared."

"Why is that?" He turned his attention to her.

Nervously playing with a strand of her hair. "I'm scared that no one will get one and that people will make fun of me about it. I still can't believe that people buy them off Etsy."

"You don't give yourself enough credit." Making his way over to her. "That is a talent and the fact that you can make it light up and or move is a skill." When she shyly looked to her feet Sam reached out with his hand tucking a finger under her chin guiding her face back up again. "You should be proud of that talent." Sam leaned forward laying a soft kiss on Sutton's lips. She pulled away blushing a hand touching her lips. "That was ok? I didn't overstep my boundaries?"

Shaking her head. "You…you didn't. I just never thought I'd go from being unnoticed by you to you taking me out for my birthday, to this. I had just accepted that I was just ever going to have a silly little crush on you and that was it."

"Oh sweetheart there is nothing silly about that." His hands cupped her face when we went back for another kiss.

They eventually moved to the couch Sam's right hand rested on Sutton's thigh while his left was weaved through her hair. Sutton's hands were on Sam's chest as they remained lipped-locked. She felt him reach up behind her to unzip her dress. Once undone he pulled the dress up over her head tossing it aside. Leaving Sutton in her black bra and black leggings. Sam groaned as he drank her in before quickly removing his shirt. Sam then laid Sutton on her back hooking his fingers to her leggings and slowly inching them off of her. Sutton's breath caught in her throat when she saw the lust on Sam's face when he saw her lying there in just her bra and panties after tossing her leggings to the floor. Never taking his eyes off of her he wiggled himself out of his pants leaving him in just his boxers. Sam moved so he was lying next to Sutton cupping her face with one hand he rubbed a thumb across her cheek. "For someone so shy you are so beautiful." He told her as he leaned in to kiss her.

Sam's callus hand ran down Sutton's side against her soft exposed skin stopping on her hip. When his hand dived down her panties, Sam smiled against Sutton's lips when he found how wet she was. He moved on top of her pulling his cock out from the hole in front of his boxers before his hand returned to her panties moving them aside. Sam slowly thrusted his cock into her letting Sutton adjust to him. Sutton's hands snaked up his sides to his back, biting her bottom lip as she felt him bury himself deep in her, holding it for a few moments when he couldn't go any further. Sutton moaned when Sam thrust harder with his next few thrusts, enjoying the feeling of him in her. Hearing her moan was like music to his ears as he picked up his pace. It wasn't long before he felt her tighten around him as Sutton's orgasm ran through her body. Sam was close to himself and kept his rhythm up.

"Harder…..I want you to go harder." Sam went over the edge when he heard her beg for him to go harder. Sutton's hands scratched at his back feeling him thrust once as he unraveled holding himself deep inside of her.

Moving Sam laid on his back as Sutton lay between Sam and the back of the couch her head resting on his chest, an arm across his chest as her leg laid across one of his. One of Sam's arms wrapped around Sutton after pulling the blanket that sat on the back of the couch over them. "Not a bad way to spend your birthday."

Looking up at him. "It's been the best birthday ever. I don't know if it'll ever be topped."

"Is that a challenge?" He smiled down at her.

"Oh, no it wasn't a challenge." Sutton sat up worry written all over her face.

Sam pulled her back down to him. "It's ok, I took it as a good thing." He stroked her head till they both fell asleep.
