Day 14: If I Should Fall Behind – Bruce Springsteen
A/N: The movie referenced is "The Lake House," starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. If you are unfamiliar with the plot and don't mind spoilers, I've put a brief summary at the end.
"Okay, all set," Kurt announced as he walked to the couch from the kitchen, a large bowl of popcorn in one hand and a few napkins in the other. He put everything down on the coffee table and plopped down on the cushion next to Blaine, giggling when the motion jostled Blaine enough to bump their shoulders together lightly. "What did you choose?"
It was movie night, and it was Blaine's turn to pick. They usually selected a movie together, but once a month, one of them got to make the choice alone. So long as it wasn't something the other would really dislike (such as horror for Blaine; sports for Kurt), pretty much anything was fair game.
"I've got it ready to go," Blaine replied, picking up the remote. Kurt looked at the title page on the TV screen and wrinkled his nose.
"Don't be like that," Blaine chided, bringing the bowl of popcorn onto the couch and resting it between them. "You've never even seen it."
"I know, but the concept is just so…melodramatic," Kurt complained.
"Um, since when do you not like melodramatic movies?" Blaine asked incredulously.
Kurt rolled his eyes. "It's different when it's a musical," Kurt said, as if the difference was painfully obvious.
Blaine huffed out a laugh, sat back on the couch and grabbed a handful of popcorn. "Whatever. My choice. You'll just have to put up with romance and drama without singing," he said, clicking the button on the remote to start "The Lake House."
About an hour and a half later, the popcorn bowl was empty and abandoned on the coffee table. There was no room for it on the couch once Blaine and Kurt gravitated toward one another. Their sides were pressed together, with Blaine's arm around Kurt and Kurt's head resting on Blaine's shoulder.
"You waited," Sandra Bullock said on the screen before them.
Without being prompted, Blaine handed a tissue to Kurt, who uttered a quiet, tearful "thank you."
As the credits rolled, the two sat quietly together. After a moment, Kurt wrapped his arm around Blaine's stomach, pulling him closer. "I'd wait for you, you know."
"Hmm?" Blaine hummed, his fingers gently gliding up and down Kurt's arm.
"If I had to – like Keanu. I'd wait." He lifted his head and turned to make eye contact.
Blaine smiled gently. "I'd wait, too. I'll always wait for you." They kissed, soft and slow, for a moment. Kurt paused, pulling back to add, "That said, I get to play Sandra Bullock."
"Deal," Blaine agreed, resuming their kiss.
A/N: Hope you liked the little twist on canon at the end there.
I did it, y'all! It took me a couple of extra days, but I made it! (The irony of the final song prompt being titled "IF I Should Fall Behind" is not lost on me.) Thank you so, so much to each and every person who read, left kudos, or left a comment. We Klaine fanfic readers/authors are a dwindling lot, but the support I have found here is truly incredible. I hope this reopens the door for my creativity so that I can write more often. Thank you to the KCC Library folks for organizing the challenge (and for encouraging me to participate)! Be kind to yourselves, and to one another.
Summary of "The Lake House" (SPOILERS): Sandra Bullock plays Kate, a doctor in 2006 living in a lake house. Keanu Reeves plays Alex, an architect in 2004 who lived in the lake house before Kate. They meet through letters exchanged using the mailbox of the lake house and carry on correspondence for two years. They eventually figure out that they are living in two different years but that they can communicate instantly through the mailbox. Of course, they fall in love via letter. To prevent a tragedy and save Alex's life, Kate begs him to hold off on coming to find her when he reaches 2006 (at which point, she is in 2008). He waits the extra two years, they unite in person at the lake house, and love wins. It's schmaltzy, and people pan it all the time, but I kind of love it.
