Man its been awhile since I checked in on Out of Time.

Oh wow...I last updated this in 2017. I doubt anyone who even read the story is still on this site. But I needed to take a break from the Remastered out of place.

Shit looking at this story is almost like a time capsule.

I mean shit, its weird to think I used to praise Ronald Reagan a lot in this story, Now I can't stand the guy because hes the reason we can't have any submachine guns made after 1986.

Well, here we go

After the group had gotten back from the barbecue place. Nala had decided to go to bed early because of the massive amount of food she had eaten. It had been a good day. She got along with her grumpy Grandpa Jem. And she got to eat nothing but delicious smoked meats all day. But now she was in her room getting ready to go to bed. But she noticed that the thing that was bothering her the most was that she couldn't get comfortable. She kept tossing and turning almost like she was choke full of energy. But in reality she just couldn't get comfortable enough to go off to dreamland.

Realizing she wasn't going to have any lucky getting back to sleep, she started to look around her bedroom. It was temporary since she wasn't even supposed to come through the portal. But she absolutely loved it. But surprisingly she hadn't actually paid attention to it much. The room was old, that much was for sure. Full of bookshelves filled with books about war and survival. But the thing that caught her eye was a chest underneath her bed. it was an old army footlocker that had an old combination lock on it.

She was curious. It looked like it had been thrown under the bed years ago. It was covered in a thick layer of dust showing that it hadn't been opened or even touched in years. She brushed her hand against it, a thick layer of dust coating her hand almost like a thick grey paint. She took a look at the old padlock. This would usually be the end of it. After all, she didn't know the combination, so it was pretty much useless.

But she had read somewhere that old padlocks could be unlocked if you listened to the sounds the lock made as you twisted the knob. Now for a human that was incredibly difficult. But for a faunus with superior hearing? Nala decided to give it a shot.

She put her ear up to the lock as she twisted it around until she heard a slightly different click than before.

And then she tried to pull it.

And nothing happened.

She felt a bit of disappointment as she realized she wasn't going to get the foot locker open that easily. So she pushed it back under the bed from where it came. She was hoping that little trick would help. But she also remembered that she heard about that trick in old black and white films her mother watched. So maybe she was just being a stupid kid thinking that the technology wouldn't have changed.

She shrugged her shoulders. As curious as she was, she wasn't about to be brought down by that. So she laid down in bed and attempted to go to sleep.

She heard a click.

She looked under the bed and the lock had somehow popped off.

She had no idea how, maybe she had unlocked it and it just needed to loosen up? No, that didn't make any sense either. But she decided not to look a gift horse in the mouth and pulled the foot locker out again. She slowly opened the top as she took a look inside.

At first it was nothing but a bunch of folders with paperwork in them. Mostly medical paperwork that didn't interest her as well as military records that she put aside. What she wanted to see was if there was any hidden treasures like in the movies.

Instead she found old photos featuring a young soldier. She squinted her eyes as she looked at him.

"Is that...Granpda Jem?" She asked as she noticed it looked like her Grandfather just younger and without his beard.

She turned the photos over to look at the date.

July 4th, 2030 in the Restablished USSR

She didn't recognize the country, she had only been in this world for so long, so she didn't know what was so significant about the name.

She continued to look through the photos.

They all seemed to be photos of her grandfather during his time in service. But the weird thing was she could have sworn her mother told her that he had only been in for so many years. But the dates of the photos were contradicting that statement. Whay kind of secrets was he hiding.

She put the photos aside as she found an old beat up OCP uniform with sewn on ranks and skill badges. She saw three badges in total, one that looked like a helicopter, one that looked like a parachute, and one that looked like a rifle surrounded by a laurel leaf. She didn't know what they meant. But she thought they looked bad ass.

But the real kicker was when she found the diary.

July 31st, 2030

If you had told me years ago that there would be another conflict in Eastern Europe. I would have laughed in your face and just told you to be more specific. But I never thought it would end up like this. I had been wanting to get out when they stop lossed me. And now here I am. It almost feels like I've gone back in time. Sometimes the enemy kills hundreds of us, and sometimes we kill hundreds of them. Everyday feels exactly the same. Who would have thought that trench warfare would have made a comeback in the 21st century. The longer I stay here the more I fail to see the point.

Nala put the diary down. This suddenly didn't seem like a fun treasure hunt anymore. And she put everything back in the foot locker.

What kind of things had her grandfather been through?

Okay, if you actually made it to the end of this story and you ACTUALLY were an OG reader, congrats. I'm genuinelly shocked.

But I would like to point out that despite Jem being somewhat of a self insert. His military record is FAR different than mine.

My contract was spent trying not to die of boredom and wishing I could deploy.

Jems however will be detailed for story purposes because he is based off of Uncle Hub.

However, I'm not sure how I'm going to continue this story after seven years. So bear with me.
