So, something I noticed is that this website does not save the characters I was using to represent dreams... So, going forward, I will be using ... before a sequence. Sorry if it has caused any confusion. Regardless, I hope you enjoy this fluffy chapter. -EG

Chapter 8
Royman moved as quickly as his bulk could manage, down the stairs to the audience chamber. He was blocked by a black-robed person whose gauntleted head was held out. Royman knew this individual served Ouranos, so he wasn't too annoyed at being stopped.
"State your purpose, guild head." The voice from the robed individual seemed to echo out of the hood, his elven ears twitched in annoyance at the sound.
Royman had to take a moment to gather his breath, people called him an 'Elf Pig' and the fact he was wheezing didn't do anything to dissuade that nickname he had.
Having caught his breath, he glared at the robed figure. "I request to speak to Lord Ouranos." He huffed, his elven pride flaring.
The hood tipped forward as if nodding and began to make his way further into the chamber. Royman took one step and the robed individual stopped and spoke in a cold voice. "You should know that you are not allowed to enter Lord Ouranos' domain unless he allows it. I wouldn't take another step if you know what's good for you."
Royman's pudgy face began to turn a shade of scarlet, but he didn't say anything, nor did he move. "Good." The echoing voice spoke, turning, and continued to travel further into the sanctuary.
X
Fels sighed, he hated dealing with Royman, he already knew what he was going to complain about this time. He silently walked up to the bottom step of the sky god's throne. "Lord Ouranos, Royman is requesting an audience."
Ouranos sighed, "Fine let's get this over with. I can already assume what he wants." Ouranos was a patient god, but even he had his limits, and how Royman questioned and challenged every independent action he took pricked at him.
A minute later the overweight elf practically stormed into the audience hall, his face appeared respectful, but Ouranos could tell by the way he walked that it was only for show.
"Lord Ouranos." Royman gave a small but polite bow.
Ouranos' deep voice echoed through the hall, "What is it this time Mardeel?"
Royman flinched however slightly at the power of the sky god's voice. "Lord Ouranos…" He hesitated which caused Ouranos' eyes to narrow fractionally. "Why did you decide to pardon that criminal? I have received a dozen complaints in the first five hours after you had the notice posted."
'So that's it. It increases the work he has to do.' Ouranos wanted to sigh, but he wouldn't show this mortal any sign of weakness. "Is that really only your problem? That the amount of work has increased by a tiny portion. If that's the case, perhaps you have grown too complacent in your position as guild head. Don't forget, while nobody in the guild has my divine blessing, I am still the God of the guild."
Royman paled at the not-so-subtle threat, "Lord Ouranos… No, that's not the problem." When Royman didn't immediately explain, Ouranos tapped a single finger down on his stone throne. Royman hastily continued, "What am I going to tell all the Familia's and businesses that the Gale Wind had destroyed? They are wanting answers."
Ouranos shook his head in disappointment, "Really? I put the reasons on the notice I posted. Things have changed, the dungeon is changing even the very air we breathe has changed over the last several years. Gale's strength will be needed eventually, did you know that over the last five years, they have saved thousands of people?" Ouranos explained as he tapped his finger again.
"Now this discussion is over and my decision stands. Unless you have something else to complain about, you are dismissed." Ouranos stated with finality. He watched the pitiful elven pride flare up in Royman by being dismissed so casually.
But Royman couldn't argue so instead, he gave a stiff bow and made his exit. "Fels, I want you to keep an eye on him. Also, bring Hermes to me, I have much to discuss with him."
"Of course, Lord Ouranos. I'll be off then." Fels spoke and took his leave to his familiars' location.
X
Royman was furious at the treatment he had received, He was an elf, he was the head of the guild, and he deserved respect. These thoughts ran through his mind as he entered his office seeing the stack of papers. He wanted to do nothing more than to burn them all in the fireplace, but he couldn't. The act would be to defile his reputation and position as Guild Head.
He glanced at the top page, one that had been subject to review. A white-haired human's picture stood clipped to the paper of a level-up summary document. It was the document that journeyed the level up from three to four.
The clock on the wall said it was past five pm, he sighed "Where did the day go?" He questioned himself. He knew the advisor of the white-haired human would be leaving for the day soon.
He sat at his desk with a heave of effort and rang a bell for his assistant. After a minute, the door opened showing a brown-haired cheinthrope in a guild vest. "You called Royman Sir?"
He crossed his fingers in front of his face, placed his elbows on his desk, and sighed, "Yes. Can you bring Ms. Tulle here at her earliest convenience?
X
Dinner that night was a relatively uneventful affair, the food was amazing thanks to Mikoto and Haruhime's hard work. Being the first thing that Bell had eaten all day, he ate almost everything that had been placed in front of him.
The others ate what would be an appropriate amount for them, the entire time Ryu didn't look at Bell. The couple of times she did she would begin to blush again. Something had happened, and everyone knew. Hestia throughout the night grew more agitated each time Ryu would blush.
The rest of the Familia ranged from slightly annoyed to proud that something had happened. Welf especially was proud, he had a constant smile on his face the entire night. He was glad that Bell had taken some sort of action, considering that Ryu was an elf, it might have been a small action, but it was still a step forward.
Haruhime was also happy, but that happiness was tinged with sadness. She knew she probably would never get the chance, not that she thought she deserved one.
Mikoto was rather indifferent, although she knew how Haruhime felt. So that made her feel a bit sympathetic toward her childhood friend, but she wouldn't push Bell or Haruhime.
Lili was annoyed, she had been around Bell the longest, Hestia was the exception, and he had either completely ignored her advances or shot them down. She knew he saw her as a little sister, despite her being older than Bell.
Hestia's fury could be felt physically, her twin tails seemed to be fluttering around of their own accord. She knew that Bell would never entertain the idea of being in a relationship with a goddess, she had tried and was brutally shot down.
After an hour of the Familia sitting, eating, and chatting Bell began to doze off. His exhaustion from the day and lack of sleep seemed to be at its climax. But he dared not to fall asleep, at least not in front of everyone; he didn't want them all to see him have another nightmare.
Hestia's voice echoed out over the table, "Thank you both for another great meal! Now you all should get some rest, Bell, Ryu can you both stay here with me?"
Every member including Bell looked at one another before eventually the other members stood and made their exits. It was starting to get late; it was already 9 at night.
Hestia glared at her captain the moment everyone had left and closed the thick sturdy doors. "Bell… what do you have to say for yourself?"
Bell looked back at his goddess in confusion, "What do you mean Goddess?"
Hestia stomped until she stood less than a foot away from him. "What did you do to that poor elf?!" she shouted in a whisper, making sure the other members couldn't hear if they had decided to eavesdrop.
When Bell didn't answer immediately, she turned to Ryu who was blushing, "What did he do to you?" Hestia demanded.
Ryu looked at the goddess and her hero, then she smiled sweetly even as the blush faded slightly on her face. "He k…kiss… kissed me."
Bell's jaw dropped open and was about to speak, but Hestia spoke first "You did What!"
Bell looked at Ryu and said "Did you really have to be so misleading? You made it sound so much worse when you said it like that." He then looked at Hestia, "All I did was place a quick kiss on her forehead."
Hestia's tails began to float about her head again. "Did you now? Ryu, leave us." The goddess demanded and Ryu gladly obliged, standing and making her exit.
Making a quick escape Ryu entered her room and began to get changed, and she waited, sitting on her bed as time passed.
X
Bell had been exhausted before, but now he felt like he was going to pass out. His body didn't want to lift his feet more than a fraction of an inch. Hestia had chewed him out for over an hour, criticizing him and banning him from doing such actions again.
He sighed in relief as he finally got close to his door, he turned the knob and entered the dark room. "Come on you can do this Bell." He whispered to himself and collapsed onto his bed.
A minute later, when his mind was starting to shut down, he heard the slightest creaking sound as his door opened. His mind tried to shift back awake but was too far gone. All he could see was the faintest sign of green-blonde hair, a rough loose shirt, and pointed ears.
"R…yu" he managed, feeling the last grasp on reality fading.
In a calming soft voice, Ryu spoke, "Sleep, my hero. I'll watch over you during the night."
X
Ryu watched as Bell finally faded into the void of sleep. She had a blush on her face, she was still embarrassed by how Bell had so publicly kissed her forehead. True, her retaliatory teasing over the events as Hestia questioned her might have gone too far. She would openly admit the fact.
But now the blush was focused on the words she had whispered, each word was true. But to actually tell him he was her hero was a different story. It took a few minutes of Ryu just watching Bell sleep, for her to build up the confidence to act again.
Just like before she maneuvered herself in Bell's bed, careful not to wake him. This time however it felt much more intimate as it was on an actual bed, but she ignored her trepidation and embraced her hero so he would hopefully get a restful sleep.
It didn't take long for his sleep to turn peaceful, she breathed a silent sigh and tried to focus on sleeping herself.
It wasn't a very successful attempt; it took over an hour for her eyes to begin to feel heavy. As the clock struck midnight, she finally passed into the realm of dreams.
X
...
"No Bell, you need to focus more on the feel of magic. Think of it like a great pond, just out of reach but easily accessible if you could but take another step." A voice he recognized but vaguely, echoed over the village he had lived in for his entire life.
He could feel the impatience of a child who didn't know any better build as he began to pout. "This is impossible!" He complained.
The voice grew closer as a hand slapped him over the back of the head, "No, it's not. You have my sister's blood in you. She was able to do this easily."
His child features began to tear up at the sudden pain as his head snapped around to see a young woman, with long white-silver hair. "Aunty I cannot do it. I just don't have that gift." Bell rubbed the back of his head, trying to ease the pain. He knew she hadn't hit him hard; he had seen her knock down a tree in a single blow when the cabin needed firewood.
The woman tsked in annoyance, "Probably your father's effect." He noticed that her eyes were slightly cracked open, he never saw them open before. He could see two different colors. But they snapped back shut as she began to cough.
It took about a minute for her coughing to stop. When she pulled her hand away there was a hint of red and a frown on her face. As she whispered, "So soon?" She then glanced over at Bell. "That's going to have to be the end of the session, go play with the other children."
With that statement, she stood straight and strong, her dark gray and black dress fluttering as she moved towards the cabin. Worry tainted his mind at that moment, he wanted to follow her back to the cabin, but he would never again disobey her orders. So reluctantly he turned his back to the cabin and began moving towards the village.
...
Bell inhaled deeply, as his mind snapped back to reality. The inhale of air brought the faded scent of ground pine needles. It was a sharp and unexpected scent, but he didn't mind it, it helped his mind shift back quicker.
He could feel a slight weight across his chest, as he was laying on his back. The faintest of morning light filtering in through the blinds gave just enough illumination to see what the weight was.
He could see the top of a green-blonde head of hair holding onto his chest, the scarred skin sat just underneath his thin shirt. "Ryu…" he whispered,
Then like a hurricane, he remembered but faintly the last moments before he fell asleep. "Hero…" he whispered, "Maybe a false one. I've been saved more than I have saved."
His heart rate began to rise, he moved his one arm that wasn't pinned under Ryu and stroked her hair. It was extremely soft, almost unnaturally so. He was careful not to touch her ears as he knew that would probably be a terrible idea given the situation, they were in.
So, he contented himself by lying and trying to relax as his hand was combing her hair just as she had done to him.
His mind raced, as it tried to save bits of information but like all dreams, they began to fade as time passed. "Dream? No, that felt… too real, almost like a long-forgotten memory. Who was that?" But the details were becoming foggy.
The only facts he could remember were Aunt and the drop of red on her hand.
.
.
.
Half an hour passed as Bell continued to stroke Ryu's hair. It was a strange sensation that filled him, it was relaxing to do something so simple while letting his mind wander over the night's dreams.
He noticed Ryu begin to stir, but he didn't stop until he felt Ryu flinch. He pulled his hand away, "Morning Ryu. How'd you sleep?"
She jumped into a sitting position, glanced around, and remembered where she was. She couldn't help the slight tinge of pink on her ears, but she nodded, "I slept pretty well actually. More importantly, how'd you sleep?"
Bell smiled reassuringly, "Pretty good, although I did have a strange dream."
Ryu looked into his eyes, "What type of dream?" Her heart rate jumped a few digits as she waited.
Bell sat for a moment, trying to decide how to explain. "I say it was a dream because I was asleep, but it felt different. I've been awake for half an hour, but I can still vaguely remember chunks, but when I try to focus on remembering two things. Aunty and a bit of blood on her hand."
He closed his eyes and focused harder, there was a fragment of something that felt just out of reach. Like having the word on the tip of your tongue. "I… I believe she was trying to teach me something, but I can't… remember." He gave a defeated sigh, "It's gone. It felt more like a mostly forgotten memory than a dream."
Ryu watched him and listened, "So do you think you might actually have family out there still alive?"
Bell shook his head, "No… I don't think so. I can't explain it, but I feel like I just know."
He looked at the closed blinds, "Well looks like we should start getting ready for the morning." Bell looked at Ryu, "Despite you being mean last night, I appreciate the help."
Ryu bobbed her head, her ears twitching slightly. "I… I only wish I could do more. But for now, it is what it is." With that statement, she moved out of the bed and gave Bell a quick glance, almost of longing, before cracking open the door and looking around. She then quickly darted out of the door and closed the door.
Bell sighed; he could feel the discomfort at the loss of warmth. The little flame grew a bit brighter, and without him realizing it he wished she would've stayed.
.
.
.
Bell entered the dining hall, feeling refreshed from a good night's sleep. He glanced and saw Mikoto and Haruhime moving around in the kitchen, so he made his way over to them. "Anything I can help with?" He asked, causing Haruhime to nearly drop the potatoes she was holding.
Haruhime turned quickly, her tail puffed out, "Please don't startle me like that." She then glanced at him over, noticing the lack of exhaustion on his face and his eyes seemed more focused. "Looks like you got a good night's sleep."
Bell nodded and smiled slightly. "I did at that. So, is there anything I can help with?"
Haruhime thought for a second then glanced at Mikoto who was observing the pair. "Here, why don't you skin these and chop them into squares." She handed the potatoes over and turned to gather more supplies for breakfast.
"I can do that." He responded before going over to the kitchen counter and got to work.
As such he helped prepare all the ingredients for breakfast, but when it came to the actual cooking, he left it to the two of them, and made his exit to see Ryu already sitting at the table staring off into space.
Deciding to get started with the day's plans he sat across from Ryu, the slight scraping of the wooden leg drew her attention, and as Bell sat, he spoke. "So, what's the plan today, we need to get some supplies for traveling. What do you want to start with?"
Ryu blinked a few times, "Right, well almost any food we get either won't last long enough or we'll have to pack so much that it would be cumbersome. So, it will be foraging or hunting."
Bell placed his hand on his chin, "I'm not great at hunting, but if it's anything like tracking a monster it should be doable. As for foraging." He just shrugged, "I have no experience nor the knowledge about what's actually edible, although, with the Abnormal Resistance developmental ability, I doubt food poisoning would be much of a problem."
Ryu thought for a moment, "Not worth testing that theory, although considering you managed Syr's lunches you would probably be immune to such things." She said with a light chuckle and Bell couldn't help the involuntary grimace at the reminder.
But Ryu continued, "I would rather avoid using blades to hunt, it would be… messy. So, I would recommend getting a cheap bow for hunting."
Bell waved his hand, "That's not a problem. We have one of acceptable quality." He glanced over towards the kitchen, leaned in, and began to whisper. "Truth be told, we had Haruhime try a bunch of different weapon types so she could more easily defend herself. No real luck in that department."
He leaned back into the chair, "I suggest we stop and get a couple of potions just for an emergency."
Ryu nodded in agreement, "That's a good idea." She paused for a second before continuing, "I was debating on whether we should get a tent or not. It would be nice to have if it rains but considering the time of year that's… unlikely. Plus, I think it would be nice to sleep under the stars. What do you think?"
Bell thought for a second before nodding, "The weather has been nice. But I think we should get one just in case. If it does rain, I would rather not get soaked."
.
.
.
They continued to rattle off suggestions and potential items they would need to get, and even as time passed the rest of the Familia entered the dining hall for breakfast. Welf was the first to enter the room.
Welf seeing the two talking could only smirk. "Well, looks like the two of you have a plan for today. That's good, anything I can help with before you head out?"
Bell nodded in confirmation, "Yes actually, would you be able to look over that bow we got for Haruhime? Make sure it's structurally sound, we were planning on taking it with us."
"Of course, I'll take a look later today. I'll probably need to strengthen the limbs if one of you two is going to use it. It was built for a level 1." Welf spoke as he took a seat in his normal place and began to think about how best to reinforce the bow without ruining it.
.
.
.
Breakfast was a delicious mix of rice, a soup that had a subtle flavor, an omelet with potato chunks, various steamed vegetables, and a small side salad. With both of them working on it, it only took forty-five minutes to finish seven sets.
Very little was said over breakfast, just small talk and compliments given to the chefs. Eventually, all the plates were cleared, and Bell gathered all the dishes and got busy washing and cleaning them.
Ryu watched for a moment remembering when Syr had tricked Bell into doing the dishes at the Hostess, after a minute Ryu offered to help by drying and placing the dishes where they belonged.
They worked in silence for a short period until Bell began to speak, "There's something bothering me. Lately, I feel like almost everything I've been working for has been… well worthless, or I could be doing so much more. The insistence to push myself to the breaking point, to learn everything I have just to end up like a… well like a scared rabbit that jumps at the shifting shadows." Bell confessed a thought that had been bothering him for a couple of weeks.
"This feeling had only been growing since I had been stuck at the hospital. Sure, I don't regret the things I've done. Helping the Xenos, helping you has made it seem like it's been worth the effort." Bell claimed the last dirty bowl and began to scrub away the muck. He noticed a slight crack in the bowl and grimaced at it.
He handed it over to Ryu, "Go ahead and throw it away, it has a crack. I'll let Lili know to order some more."
She glanced down at the bowl, letting Bell's words sink in and ponder at them. She went to do as he suggested but hesitated, she noticed the crack was only on the outer coating of the material.
She placed it gently on the counter and looked over at Bell. "I think this bowl is fine, it might have a small crack but in reality, it's just a small chip and that is fixable."
Her mind shifted in thought, 'I… I feel like Bells trying to throw away a slightly damaged possession. I could compare it to him, damaged but not broken.' Those thoughts crossed her mind, but she couldn't find the words to vocalize her thoughts.
After a moment, Bell looked at the bowl and nodded. "I suppose you're right. Although…" he paused and sighed. "Never mind, sorry for voicing pointless worries. Let's finish here and head into the city."
Bell turned and unstopped the water letting it easily flow out of the sink. He took a step away and Ryu instinctively grabbed the edge of his shirt. "Bell, nothing you've done has been worthless or a waste of time. Have you made mistakes? Of course, everyone makes mistakes, I've made so many I lost count. But every mistake, every missed opportunity is a new potential. You helped me see that, now it's your turn."
Bell froze at Ryu's words, he stood there for a minute not saying anything. Until eventually he found his voice, "I… know and you're right. I've been thinking about everything in such a negative light…" He paused as the pent-up emotions began to fill him. Emotions he hadn't even realized he was holding deep within his heart and soul.
He sat on the ground to prevent himself from collapsing at the intense flood, the regret, the self-loathing and the crushing weight of his failures became overpowering for a moment. But that single moment was enough for the wall to begin crumbling bit by bit. As each tear formed another self-placed brick fell away.
Ryu was silent for a moment, truthfully, she didn't even expect her words to affect him. She sat on the floor next to him and much like he had done for her, she held her arms open and let him embrace her. There were no awkward feelings in her heart, she just held him tightly and whispered a single phrase, "Heroes, true heroes, are not perfect people. Hero's make mistakes and rely on others when they fall. You are worthy of the title Hero in my books. If you don't believe so, at least trust in my judgment."
.
.
.
Ten minutes passed and Bell was feeling dizzy from the released emotions. Eventually, he managed to calm himself enough to look at Ryu. "Ryu I… no," On slightly shaky legs he stood tall. He gave a reluctant smile, "We have… work to do."
Helping Ryu stand, he shifted uncomfortably. "Are you alright Bell?" She asked gently even as a thought crossed her mind. 'What was he wanting to say? He cut off his words before he finished.'
Bell shifted his head in uncertainty, "Not really, I do feel a bit better, but I'm a bit dizzy at the moment." Even as he spoke his body began to tilt to the side.
Ryu had to catch him to prevent him from falling over, "You should rest here. I can go get what we need."
Bell shook his head, which only made the dizziness worse. "N… no, give me a minute to see if it passes. It wouldn't be fair to have you do everything." He leaned heavily on both Ryu and the lip of the sink. As he looked in the sink, he noticed that everything was tilting slowly to the left. Then after he blinked it would tilt right.
Ryu sighed, "You know you're stubborn right?" She spoke in a mixture of serious and joking exasperation.
Bell chuckled lightly, "The main reason I'm alive now."
Even as he spoke, he could see the tilting slowly lessening. "The room is tilting less. Just give me a bit."
She sighed but reluctantly agreed, "If you wish. Here, sit back down and keep your eyes closed. It should help at least a little." Bell obeyed and with Ryu's help managed to get into a sitting position with his back against the wall.
They waited in silence; it only took two minutes for almost all the dizziness to calm and for the room to no longer tilt. He still felt lightheaded, but that was manageable. "Alright, I should be good now." He whispered and forced his body to stand again, despite the weariness in his heart.
Ryu looked at him suspiciously, he wasn't leaning to one side and his voice was steady, but his eyes looked slightly unfocused. "Very well, but I'm gonna keep an eye on you."
"I… I would appreciate that." He forced his leg to take a step then a few more. The task became easier with each success, so he moved with Ryu trailing lightly behind him.
.
.
.
Bell looked at the clear sky, "Right, I think the Blue Pharmacy should be our first stop."
Ryu nodded, "Makes sense, potions are light."
It only took a couple of minutes with their enhanced bodies, the structure was a small building, fortunately, there were no customers inside when the bell went off.
Bell glanced around the shop, debating exactly what to get when he noticed Naaza jumping slightly, 'Must have been dozing while behind the count, and the bell went off.'
Naaza's eyes latched onto Bell, and she smiled, although that smile only grew when Ryu entered right behind him. "Bell! How are you doing? It's been a while since you were last here. What can I help you with?"
Both of them noticed that Naaza's tail was swishing happily, "We are going to be heading out of the city for a while and wanted to pick up a couple of potions… just in case."
Naaza's ears shifted only slightly, "Very well there is always the usual assortment available. Do you mind if I ask what you'll be out there for?"
Ryu shook her head slightly, "A getaway and to meet someone that had left the city years ago." Ryu answered slightly evasively.
That only caused a new small grin to spread across her face, "I understand a lover's vacation. Well despite the situation we have potions that could help with that as well. You know stamina potions and whatnot."
Both Bell and Ryu blushed heavily in unison at the obvious insinuation. Almost in unison, they shook their heads in the negative, "No… nothing like that!" Ryu nearly shouted.
"Tha… that's right, just your normal potions please," Bell muttered almost immediately after Ryu.
Naaza shook her head, "Sure sure I'm just teasing. Here take this." She reached under the counter and pulled out a small chest that she opened revealing a dozen ruby red vials.
Bell looked at the potions dubiously, "How much?" He wasn't an expert, but they looked like high quality.
Naaza shook her head in the negative. "Nothing, free of charge. It's a thank you to the Hestia Familia."
Bell raised an eyebrow, "For what?"
"I suppose Goddess Hestia didn't tell you. But a thank you for helping both Daphne and Cassandra to level." Naze snapped the lid shut and pushed the small chest forward.
She could see Bell was going to argue and insist on paying at least something for them. "No arguing, but if you insist on paying in some manner then keep on having them enter the dungeon with you when you go on expeditions."
Bell smirked slightly, "So that was your aim then? Very well, tell them both I said congratulations."
Naaza pouted slightly but nodded her head. "I can do that."
Bell took the chest, looked at Ryu then towards Naaza, "Well we need to get going. Thank you for these."
"Of course, come again anytime," Naaza spoke with a wolf-like grin on her face. "Just remember to stop by if you even need those stamina potions."
They both hastily exited red-faced, Bell handed two over to Ryu for her to keep safe. He placed two in his leg pouch, "Well that was interesting."
"I agree, she basically bribed you with potions," Ryu noted, as she placed the two vials in the pouch at her waist.
"I know, but that's her way of working. Plus, it's not like it's a bad deal." Bell spoke, shifting the chest into his good hand.
Ryu glanced at the sky to gauge the time, "Well, I suppose next would be the general supplies."
The pair moved down the main street towards some of the hundreds of shops for all needs, Bell felt like he was being watched the entire time but couldn't spot the location. So, he assumed it was because of an emotionally drained state.
X
Hestia sat in her office chair with every member of the Familia gathered. Now that Bell was out of the manor, she had gathered everyone into a meeting. "Right, first thing first. As most of you already know, Bell is going to be traveling outside the city walls with Ryu again. The main purpose is to get in contact with Astraea, to allow Ryu to officially join our Familia."
Haruhime spoke after the statement was made, "How long will they be gone?"
Hestia sighed but spoke all the same. "About a month give or take. It's what they guessed based on where Astraea is located."
Lili frowned at the news, "So long? Really?" Without Bell, they wouldn't be able to make much progress in the dungeon.
"Yes, and as much as it pains me. I think it's probably good for him to be out of the city for a while. We have to remember, despite everything that's happened he has only been an adventurer for a handful of months." Hestia voiced, "Truth be told I was against it at first, but after hearing Ryu's reasoning I had to agree."
When Hestia didn't elaborate Lili spoke, "And what reasons would those be?"
Hestia sighed, "Bell is clearly traumatized by whatever happened during the expedition. Something that he cannot easily recover from. She believes that giving him the time away from the dungeon and the city will help him process that and thinks he might be willing to discuss what happened afterward."
Hestia paused but confessed something that crossed her mind. "When I had updated his status after the expedition, I could see glimpses of events. I could see the terror, the blood, the pain. But no actual details, then there is all the scarring the events left. It's not good, I doubt any of you have seen it but I have the signs of cuts, burns, punctures."
Hestia was trembling trying her best to prevent her tears from showing, Welf scratched his cheek, "Damn, if that's true then I would agree even more than I already did. I already thought he needed a chance to have a break with how hard he's been working. But still…" his words cut off as he wondered what happened.
The room was silent for a minute as everyone processed the new information. Eventually, Hestia had to break the silence, "I know it's not a great time to say this. But I was hoping to plan a miniature expedition while they were gone with the sole purpose of collecting money. With the fine, our coffers are basically empty, plus Ryu suggested we rent out the Hostess as he might feel more comfortable there as he's been going there since he started adventuring, and that won't be cheap." She didn't even want to let everyone know how much that it would cost.
Everyone nodded although Lili was upset at what would be another expensive expenditure. "Very well. Will we invite others for the expedition or just be a Familia affair?" Mikoto asked simply, she had wanted to work with her old Familia again.
"I think we should send the invitation out," Hestia muttered looking over at her children.
.
.
.
They spent half an hour discussing the different plans they would need to make as well as the logistics of the whole expedition. As it wasn't a guild-ordered expedition they would have much more freedom with it.
After they came to an agreement on how to proceed, Hestia spoke. "One last thing before this meeting is dismissed." she hesitated but pulled out Bell's most recent update sheet. "You all might see some improved growth from now on."
She placed the sheet on the edge of her desk facing out towards the Familia, everybody had a similar reaction. Shock, the fact that not only Bell but anyone close to him can grow fast as well. They would guess it wouldn't be as fast as Bell, maybe fifty percent of Bell's growth. But even that is at least five times faster than normal.
"For now, the same order stands… although I… I'm planning on letting him know the truth soon." Hestia ordered and turned away from everyone. She faced the plaque that was the Familia emblem, "Right this meeting is officially dismissed."
Hestia collapsed into her chair watching her children leave the room, "Bell…" she whispered and looked out the single window that sat in the room. "Soon…"

Ryu sighed in a silent breath as she sat the bag she had been carrying onto the ground and took a seat on a park bench. It wasn't a massive weight but holding them for over an hour was starting to grow tiresome, and although she didn't show it her leg was starting to burn a bit from the effort.
She glanced at Bell, who was holding just as much if not more. "Come on, sit and relax a bit. We'll be on the move again soon and for much longer."
Bell sighed and sat to Ryu's right, "I know… I just want to be on the move already, I've never been good at waiting with anticipation."
Ryu noticed his left thumb twitch slightly, "Do you want to make a final check-in with Amid? I believe their Familia home is close by."
Bell tucked his hand into his waist and leaned forward slightly, "No. I've already been cleared by her, so it wouldn't do much good." He sighed in defeat. "It is getting better. I can feel it. I guess it probably won't be much longer until I can use it properly again."
Ryu poked his left elbow, "Do you at least want me to continue healing it? Even if it won't actually do much to help, it might prevent further damage."
Bell nodded, "I would appreciate it, so long as you aren't too exhausted."
Ryu chuckled quietly, "Fair enough, although I doubt, I'll get that exhausted from walking." She bumped her shoulder with him just enjoying the moment of the both of them being alone with each other. To her surprise, Bell blushed slightly.

Time passed, as the pair enjoyed the silence. They had been lucky that the small park they were sitting in had not a single other visitor the entire time they sat around.
There was what sounded like a clicking sound that drew their attention, they glanced at the magic stone light post as it shifted to reveal a softly glowing stone.
Bell looked around as several others in the immediate area began to do the same, it bathed the park in a soft ethereal blue glow. "Have we really been here that long?" Bell asked, mostly to himself.
As Bell was slightly taller than Ryu, she decided to quietly lean and place her head against the curve of his shoulder. "It does appear to be so." She hadn't even realized how much time had passed.
Ryu felt a soft pressure on the top of her head, Bell had tilted his head to the side and had it resting atop hers. "Let's just wait here for a little longer. It's… too peaceful to leave yet." Bell whispered gazing out over the park.
Ryu gave a silent agreement, as she watched the park. But instinctively her eyes flickered over to the many dark alleys, she silently cursed herself for her habit. 'Those times are over. You're not the killer you used to be.'
She didn't know if Bell had somehow noticed her internal rebuking or acting on instinct, but she felt her hand be squeezed tightly by another hand. She blushed lightly but didn't pull away.

An hour passed, and they eventually agreed that being out any later would be pointless and reckless. As they walked away Bell took one last glance out over the park, it didn't have any structures to play on, but for only the briefest of seconds, he swore he could see a white-haired elf running around silently laughing. But as he blinked, the child was gone as if it never existed.
Ryu noticed Bell had stopped moving and turned to face him, "You alright?" As she turned, she could've sworn she heard the slightest hint of a child laughing in unbridled joy and excitement.
"Yeah… just thought I saw something." He shook his head to clear his thoughts, "But it was nothing. Let's head home before they send out a search party." He lightly joked trying to clear the atmosphere.
Ryu nodded, "That's a smart idea. Do you mind if I ask what you thought you saw?" She got moving again, seeing Bell turning. She wanted to continue to hold his hand, but both sets of hands were full of supplies.
Bell thought as he began moving, "I… I thought I saw a white-haired elf laughing and running."
Ryu's mind snapped to attention, even as she walked. "That's strange." She whispered but didn't falter.
"I agree, it felt almost like watching a long-lost memory. But that would be impossible." Bell said with certainty.
Ryu nodded, "I would normally agree." She paused but decided to finish her thought. "I could have sworn I heard the sound of a child's laugh."
Bell stopped, before taking another step, "That's… kinda disconcerting." He said that, but he could feel that it had felt correct and right, like a fulfilled promise.
"You're right… Let's head back." Ryu whispered but she was lost in thought at the significance of them both witnessing separate parts of a whole image.

Bell watched the final lingering effects of the sun fade as they entered the Hearth Manor, judging by the time he guessed it was just about time for dinner. "Let's place all this stuff into my room. I'm guessing dinner is almost ready."
Ryu nodded in agreement, so in quick action, they left everything in Bell's room and entered the dining hall. "Welcome back," Hestia muttered as she watched Haruhime and Mikoto bringing plates out from the kitchen.
Haruhime smiled at the both of them as she saw them, "Welcome back, you're just in time."
They watched as slowly a feast was brought out, "So… so much food." Ryu whispered, not only that there were many different types. Most were from the far east, but some were local.
.
.
.
The food was devoured by the Familia, everyone was stuffed with food by the end of it. "Death by food. Now that's a decent way to go out." Welf muttered leaning back heavily in his chair.
This caused a few chuckles, and after a few minutes of silence, Bell stood. "Thank you very much for the food. But I think it's time for me to make my exit. Have to get ready for bed."
With that statement, he made his way out of the dining hall and towards his room where he got a spare set of clothes to change into. He left and entered the onsen, being careful of which side he entered. He stripped, cleaned his body, and lowered himself into the hot water letting out a quiet groan in relief.
.
.
.
Twenty minutes passed and he sat alone in the hot water, not that he minded. Having the peace and quiet relaxing waters helped seep away his weariness and ease the dull aches that had formed across his body, especially his hand. After carrying all the supplies, he had his hand was straining, but he would live, and the pain was only temporary. Without any conscious thought as his body began to relax, his mind began to work inward to question what he wanted.
...
As he closed his eyes there were three versions of him. The indistinct gray version that was his true body, the others were a gray mixed with a portion of another color, one golden and one green.
The pure gray body shifted around looking between the two colorful bodies as they formed a perfect triangle. It whispered a simple question, one with no easy answer. "What is it that I want?"
The two colors responded in unison, but with completely different answers, "To grow stronger." The golden one said. "To be a hero." The green one said.
Both answers were correct, so he asked pushing the golden one's answer. "Why would I want to grow stronger?"
Again, they answered in unison, "To defeat the monsters, to be worthy of that which is stronger than yourself." The golden one responded.
"The ability to protect those that you love and that love you." The green one responded.
"Is it right to choose to protect those even when I don't think I'll survive?" The gray one voiced on instinct, and for the first time, they didn't respond in unison.
The golden one tilted its head, "No. Your survival is the most important, the ability to defy the destiny that monsters have laid out for you." It responded immediately.
The green one waited to find the right words but eventually started as the golden one was halfway through speaking. "You already have, and there is nothing wrong with that. People will be sad without you, but it's your nature to save others."
The gray took a single step closer to the green but continued to speak. "Would you support my wishes and the wishes of those I care about?"
Again, they spoke in unison, "Yes, but when It comes to those monsters… I make no promises. Yet you already knew that before you decided to help them." The golden one spoke.
The green one spoke quickly, "Yes, have I not already done that? Even now, I am planning on helping with every wish you have, even your allies and those 'monsters' that you've befriended."
The gray took another step and the distance between the core and the green shrunk rapidly but it didn't close entirely. So, it asked another question, one that could be the deciding factor. "Why should I choose you?" The two responded in unison again.
The golden one answered, "Because it's what you wanted from the start. Your one desire, the one thing that has pushed you to such extremes."
The green one answered, "Because it's the one that you've grown to want after surviving. Your desires cannot be quantified by a single moment or action. You have pushed yourself to the extremes and for that, you have my respect."
The decision had been made; he had made his choice as he reached out to the green shape it shone brightly. Even as the golden grew darker a blackness began to consume it. Right before the gray touched the green, he could see the hint of sky-blue and elongated ears.
...
"Wake up." Bell heard and he was shaken. The sudden movement jarred Bell's mind causing him to become startled.
He looked around and saw Welf standing in front of him, "You finally awake? I thought I was about to have to carry you out of the water."
Bell shook his head to clear the fog, but mentally and literally. "Sorry, I didn't realize that…" he was speaking, but he could tell something had changed in him. Something that he had already been building up.
"How long have you been in here?" Welf demanded, shaking Bell's thoughts back to the current conversation.
Bell thought for a moment, "If I had fallen asleep then I can't be sure, but I got in about ten minutes after dinner."
Welf slapped his forehead, "No wonder you probably passed out from overexposure to heat. Dinner was almost two hours ago."
Bell's already pale face went another shade lighter in his realization. "I was lost in thought trying to make a decision and I had passed out." Without any prompting, he covered himself and stood. "I got to finish getting ready for tomorrow."
As Bell bolted out of the bath, got changed, and ran up to his room where their supplies were stored.

Welf raised an eyebrow, as he bolted off. "Make a decision? Well, I think things are going to get interesting if that's the case. But that's for my future self, for now." He lowered himself completely into the water, and sighed in contempt, "I really got to thank Mikoto for this later." he muttered and closed his eyes.

Bell was debating on how to split the supplies between the two of them, and he swung his door wide and saw Ryu placing a second pack down to the ground. "Ry… Ryu you didn't have to do that alone." He was very aware of his damp skin still heated from the water.
Ryu eyed him for a second, "Well you were gone so long that I thought I might as well." She could see the moisture seeping through his clothes.
Bell took a step forward, "Sorry… I accidentally fell asleep in the bath. I was… so lost in thought. The… heat must have gotten to me."
Ryu nodded, "I understand, well at least you can't adjust the weights of the bags." She sighed, seeing him flinch slightly. 'That's exactly what he was planning on doing wasn't it.' She thought and she already knew the answer.
Bell sighed and nodded reluctantly. "Yes, that was the plan."
Ryu walked over and patted his head, "Just remembered you're still more injured than I am."
"Maybe, but it's only my hand. It's your leg that's injured. That makes a bigger difference when traveling." Bell rebutted, pointing out the obvious.
Ryu nodded, "True, but I was able to run for a good distance on it without needing to stop. Not to mention I was carrying Talvi. So just walking with weight on my back won't be a problem."
Bell doubted it but acquiesced. "Alright, point taken. I will choose to believe you."
"Good, now are there any last-minute things you want to do before we leave in the morning? It's late but many shops are still open." Ryu questioned, already knowing that they didn't really need anything else.
Bell thought for a second, "No, but if you give me a chance to dry off and change into dry clothing, would you come with me to the roof?"
Ryu grew the slightest bit blushed but nodded. "Yes, I can do that."
.
.
.
Ten minutes later, Bell stood next to Ryu on the roof of the Hearth Manor. The night air was refreshing and had only the slightest chill to it, but that didn't matter when they glanced up to the sky. The stars shone with a renewed brilliance, "They seem brighter than normal." Ryu whispered, not wanting to break the atmosphere.
Bell nodded and sat down, while Ryu followed suit. "I agree, how much do you know about the stars? I don't know much, just the ones that are tied to heroes of legend."
Ryu thought about it, she could probably guess at a few scraps of knowledge and information. "Same, but even less than you. It's kind of embarrassing to think that I had lived in the 'Stardust Gardens' when Astraea Familia was still… around."
Bell wrapped an arm around Ryu as they continued to stare off into the stars. She blushed but leaned into him even as the unwelcome memories flashed in her mind.
.
.
.
They sat in silence for an unknown period of time, just enjoying the cool touch of the air, the dazzling stars, and the warmth they had shared. "Earlier you said you were lost in thought, what were you thinking about?"
Bell stiffened and blushed slightly, "I was trying to make a decision, one that I already knew the answer for." He was purposely evasive, and Ryu knew it, but she didn't push him. She didn't want to break the calm mood that had settled between them.
.
.
.
Eventually, as the night grew deep, they entered into the same bed to sleep, Ryu couldn't help thinking about how strange of a reality she was living. Sleeping in the same bed as her hero, embracing each other all night, the thought made her ears burn with electric fire, but she managed to control herself.
The more it happened, the harder it was for Ryu to control herself. She wanted to release all the built-up emotions about Bell, she wanted to confess and lay everything out, but she couldn't, not yet. The night passed quickly, with her mind eventually drifting to sleep with the warmth from her heart and her back guiding her dreams.
...
"Love and trust are the foundations for a healthy relationship," Alise spoke with certainty, despite having no experience herself and honestly little interest in the subject, well as much as Ryu knew.
A hearty chuckle came from Kaguya, "Really where did this come from all of a sudden?"
Alise gave her brightest smile and pointed at Ryu who had been sitting in a small chair, "Lion! You know why!"
Ryu jumped at the sudden accusation, "What? What are you t… talking about Alise?" She stuttered out.
Kaguya's grin only widened, "For once I agree. Do you really think our useless elf could be in a relationship with her ideals?" As she crossed her arms.
Alise nodded with absolute certainty, "You already know how she embraces that human every night. How they trust each other without any doubt. You have seen the longing on her face, and that he isn't unresponsive." Alise turned to face Ryu again who was burning brighter and brighter with every word that leaked out of her best friend's mouth.
For once Kaguya's confidence faltered slightly, "You're not wrong, but has he taken any actions that would suggest his feelings?"
Ryu couldn't handle the conversation anymore, "Stop it both if you! This is a ridiculous conversation." Her long blonde hair shifted rapidly as she shook her head.
Alise smiled and shook her head, "Lion… you need to learn eventually." She turned to face her vice-captain. "Kaguya, while he hasn't acted, I believe that's because he is afraid. Afraid to push and rush. Remember how he kissed her, while it was only on the forehead, it was a first step."
Ryu's embarrassment exploded with the force of a volcano, her face and ears turned a cherry red and she fled the room and ran towards the front door of her Familia home. To her horror, she could hear the voices laughing and showing more examples as they ran after her.
She threw the front door open with enough force to tear the door from its frame, standing just outside was the all too familiar white-haired hero. She ended up slamming straight into him, causing a chuckle from her Familia members.
Alise was the first to speak up, as she gave Bell a massive thumbs up "Go easy the first time."
Kaguya cut in with her crude nature, "Or not. You never know."
Ryu couldn't handle the insinuations and the embarrassment anymore as she passed out.
...
Ryu's face burned, and her heart felt like it had been shocked. The warmth that was at her back almost felt unbearable but at the same time, it was so comforting.
Ryu avoided looking at any one specific spot for too long, "What was that dream?"
Bell squeezed her tighter causing Ryu to blush even further, the dream was already slowly fading but she could remember the emotions clearly.
It was early morning judging by the faintest shred of light leaking through the window. She shivered at fading last words, from… who she couldn't remember. The swell of embarrassment almost made her pass out, but she forced the emotion down knowing instinctively that it probably wouldn't be a good idea to pass out feeling the way she was.
Ryu felt well rested, despite it having only been a couple of hours. She couldn't… didn't want to leave the warmth, so she contented herself to wait until morning had properly arrived.
.
.
.
The bags were on, as the pair and Welf stood by the main entrance of the Hearth Manor. "Well… I suppose it would be best to get moving before the sun moves much further." Ryu commented, hefting the pack again.
"Bell… Ryu… both of you stay safe and return here in one piece." Hestia spoke with tears in her eyes.
The rest of the Familia aside from Welf gave their goodbyes and safe travels. "Come with me real quick. I have a couple of things for you on the road." Welf commented, slapping Bell on his back.
Bell blanched remember, "R… Right, I remember."
They departed the main building and entered the forge; Bell placed his pack at the door and traveled further into the back room. With the mannequin standing proudly with the armor donned. Welf chuckled again at seeing Bell's pale and embarrassed face.
Welf shouted towards the entrance to Ryu who had waited outside, "Why don't you enter and help him into his new armor?" The voice echoed off the stone walls causing Ryu to jump slightly.
Ryu sighed lightly, placed her pack next to Bells, and entered, catching a glimpse of the armor for the first time. The colors, while not prominent, were sharp and stood out in a bright Blue and a darker green. She blushed at the obvious insinuation, "Was that necessary?" She whispered but moved closer and helped by grabbing the torso portion and slipping it into Bell.
Welf chuckled as he helped by taking the vambraces and slipping them on and was especially careful when tightening the left one.
The process only took a minute, it was much faster than watching Bell do it himself, despite his grumbling. They took a step back and looked Bell over, "A good fit." Ryu commented, still embarrassed by the color choices.
"One last thing." Welf muttered, before opening the 'Completed Projects' drawer and withdrew a dagger with a pale blue sheath with obvious lighting designs on a small cross guard and pommel and the bow that had been reinforced with killer ant carapace. He handed them to Bell, "Remember only use this in an emergency. It's one of the new designs, so it will use your mind to power it."
Bell could tell he was reluctant to give the newest piece of terrible and beautiful work, "Welf… you have my word."
He slipped it into the larger pouch that was attached to his hip, that way he would have to actively focus on getting it and kept hold of the bow. Welf nodded and spoke solemnly "Good." He paused before chuckling to lighten the mood. "Now get out into the world, you two love birds." He sounded like a proud father ushering his child out.
They both blushed but remained silent. For a moment, "Thanks Welf. We'll be back soon. Keep the others safe while we're gone." Bell muttered, giving the smith a brief hug.
Welf's wolfish grin softened into a genuine one, "I'll do what I can."
With that all done the pair departed making their way to the North Gate. Bell swore that he had caught glimpses of black shadows leaping between buildings as they traversed the main road. But he never could get a solid look at the shapes.
There was a surprisingly small line at the gate to leave, Bell and Ryu had their passes in their hands ready for inspection. Despite the short line it still took over thirty minutes to be last in line, 'Finally.' Ryu thought, as the voice called "Next." a gruff voice echoed out. She glanced up and could see the Ganesha Familia emblem emblazoned on the armor of the one checking for passes.
Bell walked up calmly, while Ryu followed slightly hesitantly. Many adventures of Ganesha Familia remember who she was and what she had done. Bell held out his pass and after a second Ryu held out hers.
Ryu noticed how the checker glanced over the passes and noted the name, "Bell Cranel, also known as Rabbit's Foot." He muttered, nodded, and handed it back after pulling a stamp and pressing it onto the pass.
He glanced at the second pass, "Ryu Lion…" She could see his eyes narrow, and light up in recognition. The adventurer glanced at Ryu.
In a low voice, a voice that was just loud enough for Ryu and the Ganesha adventurer to hear, Bell spoke, "Is there a problem sir?"
After a moment, a long pause. He stamped Ryu's pass and spoke loudly. "Next." As the pair passed both heard him mutter in a whisper, "Murderer."
Ryu ignored the comment, she had expected it. She watched Bell stop and turn towards the man, before Bell could say anything she grabbed his arm and pulled with her full strength. He resisted for a moment, it felt like it was trying to uproot a great oak, but eventually, after an eternal second Bell let himself be pulled.
After they got two dozen paces away from the city, Bell whispered. "Why, why did you stop me from saying anything? You don't deserve to be called that."
The notion warmed her heart, but she shook her head, "I appreciate the thought Bell, but I do deserve it. I might have been absolved of the crimes, but it doesn't mean I didn't commit them. Besides, do we have time to get into an argument and probably have to wait until Lord Ganesha arrives to force his divine word?"
Ryu without thought clasped his hand in hers, "Thank you for getting angry, but this is a fact I knew would come up and I've prepared for it. So please."
Bell slumped slightly, "I…" he sighed, "You're right." He glanced out towards the clear blue sky, "Let… let's get moving."
With that, the pair began their long march North. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and the sun wasn't extremely hot this morning.

SSJ3 Kyuubi Gohan: Hmmm... Maybe, we'll have to see.
pix25: Bad Freya... Sit.
Blazeburn006: We both know Ryu need to calm down. XD. That was one of my goals, to have at least some interactions between the characters. I remember that in the original they had like 2 conversations. Only Haruhime had multiple conversations with Ryu. Which I admit is continuing, just because I find the dynamic interesting. Taxes Suck, and its currently tax season... so it fits strangely despite my typing this chapter months ago. Again, that is something that I want to do, have them interact more in general. Like the Bowl scene in this one. I was debating whether to keep it or not. But I found it heartwarming so it stayed. Eina is a smart cookie.
