The Legacies' Triad

Kate didn't like to feel ungrateful, but even as she sat in Yelena's flat/safehouse in front of the various scanners and radios, waiting for the opportunity to do something each night, she wished that Peter was still part of the group.

She still enjoyed spending time with the older woman, and Yelena could give her some interesting lessons in things like hand-to-hand combat or stealth, but there were still moments when she found herself wishing that Peter was there as well. She might not be as enthusiastic about the kind of things that interested Peter outside of Avengers-related matters, but it was good to have someone to talk to about more casual things. Yelena did her best, but she basically couldn't talk about anything outside of the mission even if she was doing her best to branch out.

Add in how things were basically at a standstill after everything on the ferry, and Kate supposed she was just feeling a bit stuck in a rut at this point. Yelena was doing her best to find more clues that might lead her to this other Black Widow who'd apparently been behind that first attack on Kate, but with the arms dealer having vanished after the confrontation at the ferry it was like all the obvious leads had dried up. Yelena was still going out to search, and Kate spent some time running searches for any further clues, but at this point she felt like they were both just spinning their wheels. They still spent some time training in hand-to-hand combat, and Kate liked to think she was improving, but she knew that she wasn't good enough to help Yelena on her own against a group of people with her experience. The search had become so frustrating that Yelena was actually still in her room despite her usual habit of leaving the safehouse before the sun set, as though she had come to expect that she wouldn't find anything useful tonight.

Neither of them were willing to give up, and Yelena still spent most of her time training (as well as the occasional lesson for Kate), but they both seemed to have come to accept that they weren't going to find anything on their own at this rate. They just needed some kind of fresh break…

The sound of the phone ringing cut through Kate's train of thought, but the shock only increased when the teen reminded herself that basically nobody had this number. It was too late for this to just be a random dial, but Kate wasn't sure what to expect as she picked up the phone.

"Hello?" she said cautiously, a part of her refusing to get her hopes up.

"Kate!" a voice called urgently from the phone.

"Peter?" Kate fought down the urge to grin; judging by Peter's tone, he had some urgent reason for calling her right now. "What's going on?"

"I found the arms dealer guy!" Peter yelled at the other end of the line.

"You what?" Kate said, the pleasure at hearing her friend's voice pushed aside at this more professional point of concern as she automatically shifted the phone to speaker. "How-?"

"His daughter's at my school!" Peter continued, the sound of air rushing past suggesting that he was web-swinging as he spoke. "I'm trying to follow him to… I mean, I'm assuming he's got a base of some sort, but I think he's about to do something big!"

"Like what?" Yelena cut in; Kate tried not to jump too much at the older woman's sudden appearance at her back.

"I'm just guessing, but I… I think they're going after the Avengers tech at Stark Tower!" Peter explained. "I tried to call Mr Hogan about this and he wouldn't let me finish because he was too busy with something else, and he was surrounded by boxes and about to catch a flight, so I'm pretty sure this is the day Stark Enterprises are moving out of the tower-"

"Which would be a good time to intercept and steal what is leaving," Yelena finished for him with a grim nod. "Your idea is sound, Peter Parker."

"OK, so… should we go to Stark Tower and see what we can do while you keep going after the guy behind this?" Kate asked, standing up and heading for the wall where she'd left what was rapidly becoming 'her' bow in her training sessions.

"That's one option, but keep tracking my phone; I'm going to try and intercept this guy before he can head off, but it can't hurt to cover all options," Peter replied.

"We'll be on our-" Kate began before the phone call terminated. Giving the screen a brief glance to confirm that the call had ended, Kate put the phone down and grabbed her bow and a purple bodysuit she'd seen earlier, picking a kind of mask out of another cupboard as she headed for a side-room.

"What are you doing?" Yelena asked, even as she headed over to the cupboard to grab her own weapons.

"Hey, if I'm going out to help Spider-Man and a Black Widow stop an arms dealer, I think I need some kind of cool look in the field," Kate pointed out, glad that she'd already dressed for a training session; all she needed to do was grab a jacket and field quiver instead of just grabbing arrows at random. "And don't think you can stop me coming; Peter was my friend first, you know?"

"…Very well," Yelena said, looking at her with an expression of tentative curiosity that Kate chose not to question right now; all that mattered was that she was being allowed to come along on this rescue. "Natasha left a bike we can use."

When he found Liz's father entering an old industrial park in Brooklyn, Peter wondered if he'd made a mistake about just how quickly this man was going to go off and do whatever he was going to do next. Peter was going to stand by his theory that the man was going after the equipment in Avengers Tower during the upcoming move, but that didn't mean this guy wasn't going somewhere first to pick up his wing-suit or whatever that thing was… or he could just be going to check something else relating to his totally legal business…

Only one way to find out, Peter thought to himself as he focused on the nearest open window. Mr Hogan might not have been interested in taking his call, and Yelena and Kate couldn't get here in time to make a difference, but he had to take a chance and confront this guy. If he was wrong, he could probably apologise, but if he was right, he might be able to stop the man before he brought the suit into the equation. Opening a hatch in the roof that was probably some kind of window, Peter slowly let out a webline to lower himself into the building, which initially struck him as the equivalent of every abandoned warehouse in films and TV shows until he saw the screens on a walkway thing. He wasn't sure how these guys had what looked like cameras focused on Stark Tower, or even the blueprints of what he assumed was the plane being used to ship the tech away from the building, but he had no reason to believe these weren't accurate so he would assume the worst until he knew otherwise.

When he saw the wings on the ground level below the walkway (fortunately with nobody currently wearing them), Peter knew he had the right place. Hearing the sound of some kind of mechanical work going on around a corner, Peter quietly hopped down and walked along the corridor until he came to a larger, emptier room with a workbench at the other end. Liz's father had apparently been working on something, now just wearing a black T-shit and trousers rather than the thick coat Peter was used to seeing the man in the wing-suit wear, which at least gave Peter hope he was in time to stop the man setting off on his next crime spree.

"It's over," Peter said, lowering his voice as he addressed the older man; hopefully the mask and the sheer audacity of the situation would stop the criminal realising where he'd heard Peter before.

"Over?" the older man said, putting down his work to direct a sceptical gaze at the young vigilante as he shrugged on a familiar fur-collared coat. "How do you imagine that?"

"Because I'm here to stop you," Peter pointed out, deciding to jump straight to the metaphorical big gun. "Do you really think your daughter would want this?"

"My dau-?" Liz's father began, but Peter kept an eye on his hands, firing a quick shot of webbing as the man moved along the desk. "Hey!"

"You're not going anywhere," the younger man said with a cool glare under his mask. "We can keep this simple if you turn yourself in now, and I'll put in a good word at the trial."

"Trial?" the man glared at him. "Do you even understand why I'm doing this?"

"Because you wanted to make money," Peter countered.

"For my daughter," the older man countered, before he glared. "And I wouldn't have to do it this way if your boss hadn't ruined my business."

"My boss?" Peter repeated.

"Stark," the man said with a glare of contempt. "I sunk all my money into a contract intended to collect the debris after the Battle of New York, and then he just swept in and stole everything before I got a chance to do anything."

"That's… OK, I get how that sucks, but it's not like Mr Stark did any of that to hurt you on purpose-"

"He never cares about the little people in this situation!" Liz's father yelled at Peter. "It's all about his own profit; Stark just wanted to make sure he was the only one who could profit from that-"

"What, do you think Mr Stark made Loki invade New York just so he could steal the tech afterwards?" Peter countered. "Maybe he was wrong not to keep you in the loop after you did that work, but he was trying to keep people safe-"

"By ruining my life?"

"Says the man creating weapons?"

"Which I wouldn't have to do if Stark had just let me do my original job!"

"You don't get to blame someone else for everything that went wrong in your life when you're selling weapons to criminals," Peter retorted. "Do you even care that people are going to die from your weapons so long as you get money from it?"

"What they do with my tech is not my fault," Liz's father retorted. "Your buddy Stark made his money selling weapons; the rich and powerful sit up there and do whatever they want while we just have to do our best with whatever scraps they leave behind."

"The difference is that Mr Stark at least tried to sell his weapons to who he thought were the right people; do you even care who's buying this equipment?" Peter protested. "You can't just give out this kind of technology to criminals; there's a reason Mr Stark never even properly patented his suits-!"

The sound of something coming in from behind him prompted Peter to jump upwards just as something literally flew below him. Peter vaguely glimpsed what looked like the old man's wing-suit flying under its own power, and wondered if he should be impressed at that particular feature before he decided to focus on staying away from it. With a combination of his webbing and his natural athleticism, Peter was able to jump away from the wings any time they came close to him, even if the suit was moving too fast for him to land a sufficiently strong blow against it.

"I have to admit, you're better than I thought," the old man said as Peter landed on the ground; Peter immediately noticed that he had cut the webbing holding his hand in place while Peter was busy. "Too bad it's not enough."

"What are you talking about?" Peter countered, as the wings settled into a kind of holding pattern around him (Thanks to Yelena for teaching him and Kate those kind of terms). "That thing hasn't even hit me yet!"

"True," the old man observed. "Then again, wasn't really trying to."

Peter only had a moment to realise that the suit's true objectives hadn't been to attack him directly, but instead to target the stone pillars around him, before the wing-suit made a final pass through all four pillars and the building above literally collapsed on top of him. Peter managed to duck down before the rubble could actually hit him, but there were still several terrifying moments as everything shifted around him…

Peter didn't know if he'd actually blacked out or just had some kind of panicked shut-down, but he soon found himself literally held down by a mass of stone and metal. His head and left arm were only just free of everything, and as far as he could tell his other limbs weren't broken, but with all this weight on top of him…

Fighting down the pointless urge to call for help, Peter pulled off his mask to get a better look at what was around him; the goggles were too covered in dust to help him now. If nobody had shown up during his first confrontation with Liz's dad, he had to assume nobody was nearby to help him, so he had to do this by himself. Even if he wanted Kate and Yelena here to provide any sort of back-up, he was the only one of their small group with the physical power necessary to get out of this mess…

You're clearly not ready for this kind of thing

"I can do this…" Peter told himself, glaring down at his reflection in a pool of water as he pushed back against the debris above him. "Come on… come on, Spider-Man… come on, Spider-Man… come on, Spider-Man…!"

How long it took him he wouldn't like to say, and his back was definitely going to be feeling that in the morning, but after some determined pushing, he found himself back on his feet, pushing the rubble aside as he climbed to safety. He almost wished that he could take a moment to rest up and recuperate, but when he looked to the side and saw the wing-suit perched on the side of a billboard in a manner that made Peter think of some kind of mechanical vulture, he knew that he didn't have time for that.

No matter how fast Kate and Yelena moved to join him, he was here now, which meant it was his responsibility to stop this guy… even if firing a web-line to basically lasso a man with wings was probably not the smartest call he'd ever made in his life…

Kate felt as though she had been through more than a few emotional extremes over the last couple of hours, but she couldn't stop the part of herself that was enjoying this latest turn of events. She kept reminding herself that she had to be careful when going into action hunting down arms dealers who were capable of making technology that was enough to make Peter take notice when he'd literally seen the Avengers in action, but at the same time, it was good to feel like she was doing something more active to help her friend.

Plus… OK, a smaller part of her had to admit that she wasn't going to object to the chance to get up close to Yelena as they drove into action. It wasn't as though she could just let herself relax and enjoy the sense of being close to her older friend when they had to worry about Peter, but it wasn't too hard to let her mind drift slightly as the bike drove through the streets. The whole thing was some elaborate high-tech setup that Kate was fairly sure must have been made by Tony Stark at some point; it seemed like the kind of thing he might have made for the 'original' Black Widow (was that the right term?) before the stupid Sokovia Accords caused everything to fall apart. The bike was a bit thicker than a standard motorbike and had some kind of armour around its front, as well as a couple of holes at the front and back that Kate assumed were for some kind of weapon and some kind of booster engine respectively.

Right now, the feature that was most useful to their efforts was a tracking device between the handles that allowed Yelena to focus on tracking Peter's phone while also following their projected route. The bike was actually moving so fast that Kate was fairly sure Yelena's fancy goggles were somehow helping her even keep track of where she was going. Her own goggles might just have some kind of targeting program and new vision settings, but Yelena's larger headset had to have more features. No matter how good Yelena was, Kate had her doubts that any human could react fast enough to steer this thing at the speed they were currently going at, so tech help had to be involved. The route to Stark Tower was relatively straightforward, but in case Peter got back in touch, the bike had been programmed to track Peter's phone based on it being the last number that had called the safehouse.

Kate had no idea how Yelena knew how to drive this thing at such high speeds when Kate had never seen her take it out before, but based on what she'd understood of Yelena's explanation as they were preparing to leave, this particular bike could basically be programmed to 'aim' for a specific target and then automatically take the fastest route to that destination, as well as automatically avoiding any passing civilians. Yelena was mainly sitting at the handles to make the bike look like it was a normal but fast bike, but Kate still found herself freaking out once or twice at how fast they were going. She only just stopped herself reaching back to check the quiver on her back; this thing had originally been designed for the Hawkeye, she had to assume it could cope with these kind of speeds-

She suddenly slammed into Yelena's back as the bike suddenly halted, leaving Kate to sit back and look at the older woman in surprise.

"What is it?" she asked, realising the blonde was looking at the display screen with a tilted head. "Something wrong?"

"Peter Parker's phone is now up in the sky."

"So… he's web-swinging?"

"He is too far up for that to be the explanation," Yelena said, studying the display for a moment before she reached over to adjust the device. As the display shifted to show the dot that represented Peter's phone a considerable distance above the display of New York, Kate winced at the implications of that particular twist. Whatever led to Peter being that far up in the air when he wasn't a natural flyer like Thor or Vision, she had a feeling it wasn't going to be good.

"This… is bad, right?" she looked over at Yelena.

"It is not positive," Yelena affirmed, before Kate noticed the dot beginning to descend towards the ground. "And that is another point of concern."

"If that's… can we track where it's coming down?"

"You think it is necessary?"

"I think that when Peter's fighting a guy with wings and his phone's coming down from that kind of height that fast, we need to be ready for anything," Kate said, reaching up to briefly check her bow was still in place before she turned back to her friend.

"If Stark Tower is the target-"

"Peter wouldn't be that high up on his own and we know the guy behind this can fly; do you really think he'd be anywhere but in the thick of the action at a time like this?"

"That is true," Yelena nodded with a slight smile, only for that smile to fade as she looked back at the display. "And if you are wrong?"

"Peter knows who's behind this now and we can find him later if we have to," Kate said, even as she hoped she wasn't making a mistake. "We might not be able to do much on our own if we get to Stark Tower without Peter and these guys are there already, but if we can help him… well, we know we can do that, right?"

"That is true," Yelena said with a slight smile. "He does better when we are there…"

Her smile faltered as she glanced at the display screen again. "And he appears to be coming down at a rapid rate."

"OK, let's work out where he's coming down and get there fast!" Kate said, taking a grip around Yelena's waist as the bike started again. "Come on; we have to catch up!"

As the dot drew ever closer to the ground while the bike accelerated towards the dot, Kate hoped that whatever Peter was flying on would give him time to make a reasonably smooth landing… and that they'd get there in time to make some kind of difference…

Wincing as he regained consciousness, Peter made a mental note to not try something that extreme again unless he was absolutely sure he had no better options.

OK, so he couldn't imagine being stuck in this kind of scenario ever again, but he'd never imagined that he'd have to stop an invisible plane carrying Avengers tech from being hi-jacked by a man in a wingsuit even once, so who could say what would happen in future? Getting up to the plane had been the hardest part- he couldn't believe that Liz's dad had just never been aware that he'd been carrying a 'passenger' all the way from the ground- but once he'd made contact with the plane, he was relieved to find that his wall-crawling thing was enough to hold him in place even against the wind resistance at this height.

He'd still had to deal with Liz's dad attacking him once he managed to follow the guy inside the plane, and maybe webbing up the propeller hadn't been the best move, but it got the plane moving back down to the ground before he could get away. The crash had been a lot… bigger than he'd expected, and Peter was sure he'd blacked out again for a moment there, but stopping this theft had to count for something…

"Ow," Peter said as he stood up, making a note to find some way to add some kind of padding to this suit. He could take more punishment after that spider-bite than he could have ever been able to cope with before everything happened, but it wasn't like he was Doctor Banner; if he could give himself extra protection, that wouldn't be a bad idea.

Looking around the crash site, Peter had to resist the urge to take his mask off again as he assessed the beach where the plane had come to a halt. There were various small fires around him, and he could see a brightly lit carnival of some sort through the smoke and flames, but so long as innocent people weren't in danger-

The ringing in his ears and his foggy head were suddenly struck by a moment of clarity as Liz's father tore out of the smoke and charged towards him. Peter was fairly sure his earlier training with Yelena was the only reason he was both ready for something like that and fast enough to dodge out of the way of that particular attack, and even then his upward jump was cut short when the wing-suit struck his legs as it passed underneath him.

Shaking his head again after he hit the ground, Peter turned around to see that his opponent had struck a sandbank behind him, even if the older man was already getting to his feet. The suit was sparking in a manner that Peter was fairly sure wasn't a good thing from any kind of machinery, but he didn't doubt that this guy was still capable of doing a lot of damage. As the older man turned back to mount a new attack, Peter tried to snag him with a web-line, but the web-line missed and Peter found himself suddenly pinned to the ground. He screamed in pain as the metal talons on the man's feet tightened their grip before the man himself started to hit him. Peter was just able to focus through the pain and grab the oncoming fist before the next blow struck-

Feeling his enemy begin to pull him up into the sky, Peter only just managed to fire off another web-line as the man in the wing-suit released his grip. The other man cut that web-line and forced Peter to the ground; Peter only just remembered a move Yelena had demonstrated earlier and managed to roll to the side before the other man could actually hit him. The move was a small shift in the grand scheme of things, but it was enough for Peter to kick out at his opponent and force them further apart, allowing him to get to his feet while the older man spread his wings in a defensive manner-

"Hey!" another voice called out. It took Peter a moment to recognise what he had just heard because he didn't expect to hear that voice in this kind of context, but then an arrow struck one of his opponent's wings and Peter knew he was right.

"Ka…estrel!" he began, quickly correcting himself with the reminder that he was facing a man who didn't know his identity and who he definitely didn't want to give any clues regarding Kate Bishop's identity. "How did- Widow?"

He supposed he shouldn't have been totally surprised when he got up and turned around to see Kate and Yelena standing on the edge of the crash-site, just out of range of the burning flames. Kate was wearing a tight purple outfit and Yelena in her familiar white, a bow in Kate's hands and Yelena's guns in hers, high-tech goggles covering the top parts of their heads. Peter only knew it was them because he couldn't think of any other women who'd be getting involved in this situation all of a sudden-

Yelena suddenly raised her arm and fired her gun, but Peter stopped himself flinching even before he realised that she had only shot at the man now standing behind him. The arrow had caused some damage to the wing, but the bullet must have struck some kind of power supply, as the entire suit suddenly seemed to collapse, leaving its former user with nothing but a leather jacket and a few pieces of armour.

"What the-?" the man looked down at himself in confusion before he turned back to the women, realising that Peter had moved over to join them. "Are these chicks with you?"

"White Widow and Kestrel," Peter nodded at Liz's father with a slight smile, hoping the alias he'd impulsively come up with for Kate met with her approval. "Consider us… back-up Avengers."

"You've gotta be kidding me…" the old man glared at the three of them. "This is just- I wasn't even hurting anyone; nobody knew what I was doing-!"

"We knew many things," Yelena said, looking at the man with a satisfied smirk. "And you were hurting many people, even if it was only indirectly."

"Or did you kid yourself that you're not responsible for what people do with your weapons even after you made the things?" Kate said, holding out an arrow and waving it in the old man's direction. "That's like me saying it was the arrow that shot you rather than me; does that make sense?"

The man tensed his shoulders as though he was going to try and attack, but he stopped himself before he could actually make a move. Whatever this guy's issues were with Mr Stark, at least he wasn't desperate enough to try and attack two armed people ready for a fight and another guy with superhuman strength, even if Peter felt like he already needed to get a rest before he did anything more strenuous than walk.

"…I'm going to prison, aren't I?" he said at last, a resigned tone to his voice.

"You were caught stealing Avengers tech by three associates of the team and we have a lot of evidence that you've been doing some pretty shady stuff the last few days at least," Kate said, moving the arrow to her bow as she glared at him. "With all that to think about, do you really think you're getting out of this?"

"But you may receive leniency if you offer us information on another topic," Yelena said, giving the older man a cool smirk as she reached into one of her pockets and walked cautiously towards him, still keeping a gun aimed in his direction even as she held out a photograph in her other hand. "What can you tell us about this woman?"

"What can I-?" Liz's father said, looking at the picture in confusion before his eyes widened in surprise. "Satine?"

"So you know her?" Yelena said, keeping the photograph held up even as she stepped back.

"She… bought a few things from me," the old man acknowledged cautiously. "I knew that wasn't her real name, obviously, but-"

"Where did you regularly meet with her?"

"We… there was an old brownstone in Brooklyn that seemed to be her main base," Liz's father acknowledged. "We only met there a couple of times, but that was always where I went if she wanted a direct delivery instead of a drop-off…"

"Thank you," Yelena said, before she stepped back and swung her leg forward to strike the older man in the head, sending him to the ground, basically pinned down by his damaged equipment.

"Hey!" Kate looked at Yelena in surprise. "I thought you wanted to-?"

"There is only one designated Red Room facility in Brooklyn; that will be where my target is located," Yelena said nonchalantly as she turned and put the photo back in her pocket.

"…You knew they had a place in Brooklyn and you didn't check there already?" Peter asked.

"There are at least five such compounds in New York; if I checked the wrong one first, it would have tipped them off that someone was looking for them," Yelena clarified as she walked back to them.

"And they could have escaped before you could find the right one?" Kate guessed.

"Precisely," Yelena nodded with a smile. "But now that I know the safehouse and they do not know that I know-"

"We can do that tomorrow," Peter said.

"Tomorrow?"

"I'm pretty sure this guy was just a contractor rather than actively working with this Red Room lot, so if he's not in regular contact it's not like they'll know you got a chance to talk with this guy before then, and at this time of night I don't think we'd all be at our best," Peter observed, waving a hand between the three of them. "So… tomorrow?"

"I'm up for that," Kate smiled.

"…Very well," Yelena said, flexing her shoulders as she looked back at the man in the suit. "We should secure this man and get away as soon as possible."

"Yeah, we're not quite ready to deal with the legal issues of this whole mess…" Peter sighed as he turned back to the arms dealer. "I'll web him up and we can get away after leaving a tip with Mr Hogan."

AN: In case anyone is questioning the fine details of how Kate and Yelena could get to Coney Island in time to help Peter stop the Vulture after that crash, I admit that I'm making two key assumptions, but I think they're reasonable in the circumstances.
1. The bike Kate and Yelena are using is an extremely fast bike designed for Natasha by Tony Stark before the Avengers broke up. This bike is therefore capable of far greater speeds than most vehicles, which meant that it reached Coney Island far faster than other means of transport (particularly since it's smaller and able to make more rapid turns than a car).
2. After being caught in close proximity of a crashing plane, it seems reasonable to assume that Peter and the Vulture were unconscious for at least a few minutes from everything they went through at that point. Vulture was mostly protected by whatever extras were in his suit and Peter by his enhanced healing, but neither of them are strong enough that they could go through something like that and be up and at it in the next moment.
With the above in mind, add in that it takes about an hour to get to Coney Island from Grand Central Station (which is close to Stark Tower), I'm assuming Kate and Yelena took about half an hour to get to the crash site at Coney Island, which gives Peter at least that long to regain consciousness after the crash and stop his enemy from escaping.
