Chapter 15: Being Royal
April 7, 1872
It was a Sunday morning at Enchancia Castle. In Candice's room, Candice woke up with Jenny laying beside her.
"Good morning, Jenny," Candice smiled.
"Good morning, Candice," Jenny smiled back as Creamy jumped up on Candice's bed.
"Good morning, Creamy," Candice greeted.
"Good morning, Candice," Creamy said as he dropped an envelope he had been holding in his mouth. "This was slipped under your door a few minutes ago."
Candice opened the envelope and read a note that was inside.
Dear Princess Candice:
Your presence, along with your sister's presence, is requested in King Roland's study at ten this morning. Please wear a gown and your tiara.
Signed:
Arthur Baileywick, Royal Steward of Enchancia.
"Sounds important," Jenny said as she and Creamy read the letter with Candice.
"Yes," Candice agreed.
"Are changes coming?" Creamy wondered.
"I would think," Candice answered. "Dorrie and I are princesses now. I would think the rules have changed as it were."
"I'm sure everything will work out," Creamy said in a reassuring voice as he gently put his paw on Candice's hand.
At ten that morning, Candice and Dorrie arrived at Roland's study where they were shown in by a male servant.
"Ah, ladies," Roland smiled. "Please sit down. Your mother and I have been discussing your role here at the castle now that the two of you are princesses."
"I see," Dorrie said, hesitant, as she and Candice sat down.
"Not to worry, girls," Violet said in a reassuring voice to her daughters. "We've come to an accommodation on some things. King Roland will explain."
"Let me get straight to the point," Roland started. "Now that the two of you are princesses, it would be beneath your station to be maids."
"But sir," Dorrie responded, "being maids are all Candice and I have known."
"I'm aware of that," Roland gently said. "We don't want to take everything the two of you have known away from you. The two of us have come up with solutions that will allow you to continue in domestic service ... but now in a princess way."
"What has been decided, sir?" Candice asked, curious.
"Until your marriages, you will remain in charge of the Guest Reserve, Candice," Roland answered. "Dorrie will remain as the castle representative to young royals visiting the castle. The two of you will continue to be royal magicians. And the two of you may continue to help out in the kitchen."
"But ..." Dorrie cautiously started.
"The two of you will no longer be official maids," Roland announced. "It wouldn't fit into your new status as princesses. However, you'll still be in domestic service ... now as official greeters when special events take place here at the castle."
"Most kind, sir," Candice acknowledged.
"What about our Protector, intelligence, and Voyager activities?" Dorrie wanted to know.
"The two of you are Protectors no matter what," Roland reassured Dorrie and Candice. "Also, your status with Crimson Force remains unchanged, and your status with Warehouse Ten remains unchanged. As for your status as Voyagers, that remains your personal business."
"Understood, sir," Candice acknowledged.
"Meanwhile, until your marriages, the two of you will remain with Enchancian Intelligence," Roland continued. "Afterward, when you move to Ornburgh, you'll be fast-tracked into Ornburgh Intelligence. King Jonathan has already started the arrangements for that."
"It looks like everything has been decided, then," Dorrie commented.
"We wanted to make this transition as painless as possible," Roland gently said. "The two of you are now princesses. Congratulations. It's a step up the two of you richly deserve."
"Thank you, sir," Dorrie and Candice both said in appreciation.
"You're most welcome," Roland smiled. "And now, onto your first official function as princesses."
"What function would that be, sir?" Dorrie asked.
"An official luncheon to be hosted by the two of you," Roland announced. "You may invite your friends. It is a chance to show yourselves off as princesses. Baileywick will be available to help you out with all the details."
"Then we'll strive to put our best foot forward, sir," Candice pledged.
"I know you and Dorrie will do fine," Roland smiled, pleased. "There's just one more thing."
"And what would that be, sir?" Dorrie wanted to know, curious.
"The two of you, and your mother, will now dine regularly at the royal table," Roland announced. "Consider it a gift for all the years of fine service the three of you have provided."
"We are most honored, King Roland," Violet said on behalf of herself, Dorrie, and Candice. "Thank you."
"You are very welcome," Roland happily acknowledged. "We've covered everything that needs to be covered. I'll see the three of you at lunch today."
Violet, Dorrie, and Candice left Roland's study. As they walked down an empty hallway, Violet looked at Dorrie who had a troubled look on her face.
"What's wrong, Dorrie?" Violet asked, concerned. "Are the arrangements troubling you?"
"It's not that, Mom," Dorrie answered. "I was thinking about Faith's offer to use the Resurrection Gauntlet on us should the worse happen. I'm not quite comfortable with the idea."
"I wouldn't worry about that," Violet said in a reassuring voice. "Princess Faith was expressing a concern. She's to be praised for that. But, she's not a Voyager, so she's unaware of our medical technology. Our medical technology is very advanced. So much so that we can heal injuries that would be otherwise fatal. So, in our case, the Resurrection Gauntlet would be unnecessary."
"Thank you for that, Mom," Dorrie said, grateful.
At that point, Violet had to get back to work. Dorrie and Candice made their way back to their rooms. Upon arriving at the doors to their rooms, they noticed that each door now had a new gold nameplate on it with their title of princess.
"Well, that was fast," Candice remarked.
"Yes," Dorrie agreed. "Well, at least we'll get to keep our rooms."
"I'm glad of that," Candice said, relieved. "I'm quite comfortable in mine."
At that moment, seven-year-old Doc walked up.
"Excuse me, princesses," Doc said as she curtsied. "I was wondering if you could help me?"
"Of course, Doc," Dorrie smiled. "And it's just Dorrie and Candice to you."
"Understood," Doc acknowledged. "I was told that one of Prince James' old toys needs to be fixed, but I can't go to his room without an escort."
"No problem, Doc," Candice happily responded. "I'll take you up."
"Oh, thank you, Candice," Doc said, pleased.
"I think I'll catch up on some reading," Dorrie announced. "Have fun, you two."
James' room
As Candice and Doc walked up to James' room, Candice started a conversation.
"I found out what gift my amulet gave me," Candice revealed.
"What did you get?" Doc wanted to know, excited.
"A copy of your ability to make toys come alive," Candice answered. "Jenny told me about your ability."
"Oh, my!" Doc exclaimed in shock.
"Don't worry," Candice said in a reassuring voice. "Your secret is safe with me."
"Thank you, Candice," Doc acknowledged, grateful.
"If I might ask, how did you get the ability?" Candice wanted to know.
"I got it through my grandmother," Doc explained. "It skips a generation, so instead of my father getting the ability, I got it."
"Has your family always had that ability?" Candice asked, curious.
"It started with my grandmother," Doc started. "She always had a fondness for toys. One day, she was contacted by a good witch who wanted her daughter's doll repaired. The daughter was so pleased with how her doll was repaired that her mother granted my grandmother the gift. The gift included a magic stethoscope. When the gift was passed down to me, the daughter, now a mother herself, presented me with a magic stethoscope of my own. You need the stethoscope to fully use the gift."
"Nice," Candice smiled. "I guess for me, my amulet works like your stethoscope."
Doc nodded her head in agreement. In a few minutes, Candice and Doc reached James' room. Candice knocked on James' door, but there was no response.
"The prince stepped out for a while, Princess Candice," a passing maid revealed.
"Okay," Candice acknowledged. "Doc is here to repair one of Prince James' old toys. I volunteered to escort her here."
"Very good, Princess," the maid acknowledged as she went on her way.
"I'm never going to get used to this princess thing," Candice said to Doc. "There's too much of a working girl in me."
"I'm sure you'll get used to it in time," Doc said in a sympathetic tone of voice.
"I'm sure I will ... eventually," Candice agreed. "Let's go in."
Candice and Doc entered James' room and discovered a toy female knight laying on James' table. With the toy female knight was a note saying that the knight's leg had come off.
"I'll bring her to life so I can reassure her everything will be okay," Doc said as she brought out her magic stethoscope. In a few moments, the female knight came to life. The knight then started crying.
"Hey what's going on?" Doc sang. "Tell me what's wrong. I know there something we can do. It might not be clear but that's why I'm here. Tell me what's bothering you. Got something on your mind. Don't you keep it inside. You're gonna be fine. Hey, tell me what's wrong. What's going on?"
"My leg is off," the female knight sadly answered. "A knight is no good without her leg."
"My name is Doc ... Doc McStuffins," Doc introduced herself. "What's your name?"
"I'm Lady Kayley," the female knight informed Doc. "Prince James named me after one of King Arthur's knights. Can you help me?"
"I'm going to do my best, Lady Kayley," Doc promised as she examined Kayley. "I see the problem. The joint that holds your leg to your body has come loose. I have just the ticket for that."
Doc then brought out a small strip of cloth and some glue from her bag. Doc put some glue on the joint and then wrapped a bit of the cloth around the joint.
"I'm going to pop this back in now," Doc announced to Kayley. Doc then popped the joint into Kayley's body. It was a good fit, and Kayley's leg was once again attached to her body.
"My leg is back!" Kayley exclaimed in happiness. "My leg is back! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
"Whoa! Brilliant!" a male voice came from behind Kayley, Doc, and Candice.
"Did that toy knight just ... talk?" a female voice asked, shocked.
Kayley, Doc, and Candice turned to see James and Sofia standing there.
"Oh, no!" Doc cried out.
"Please don't be afraid," Candice pleaded to James and Sofia. "Doc has a special gift, that's all. She can make toys come alive. Please don't judge her."
"We were taken off guard," Sofia gently said. "It wasn't a judgment."
"Never a judgment," James said in an understanding way. "It's no different than Candice changing into a dragon, or Dorrie changing into a werewolf."
"Wait!" Doc said in disbelief to Candice. "The two of you can change?"
"Surprise," Candice smiled.
"You have a wonderful gift, Doc," James said as he gently put his hand on Doc's shoulder.
"A gift you can be proud of," Sofia happily said.
Suddenly, James' jacket pin and Sofia's amulet glowed for a second, then returned to normal.
"What happened?" James wanted to know.
"Did we get a new gift?" Sofia asked.
"Each of you must have received a copy of Doc's gift, just like my amulet gave me a copy of Doc's gift," Candice answered.
"You have a copy of Doc's gift?" Sofia asked Candice.
"Yes," Candice happily answered. "I've already used it to bring Jenny to life whenever I want."
At that moment, Violet walked into James' room, followed by Lucinda, Amber, Hikari, Dorrie, Abby, King Roland, and Queen Miranda.
"What is going on?" Violet wanted to know. "Just now, my amulet, Dorrie's amulet, Abby's amulet, Princess Lucinda's amulet, Princess Amber's amulet, and Princess Hikari's amulet all glowed at the same time, for no reason."
"Then Scarlett's theory was correct," Candice said to herself.
"What theory?" Violet inquired.
"When two people who have magical amulets and pins get the same gift at the same time, that gift gets passed on to other nearby connected amulets and pins," Candice explained. "It must have happened when Doc's gift was granted to James and Sofia."
"What gift?" Roland asked.
Doc stepped forward and explained what her gift was. Doc then stepped back, worried.
"Why are you afraid, Doc?" Miranda asked with compassion.
"I'm afraid you will all think I'm a freak, ma'am," Doc answered.
"You're no freak," Roland gently said. "You have a wonderful gift. A gift you can be very proud of."
"That's very kind, sir," Doc said, grateful. "Thank you."
"You're very welcome," Roland smiled.
"I should be on my way," Doc suggested. "I'm sure all of you have things to do."
"Actually, Doc," Sofia suggested, "I was wondering if you'd like to come to my room. I have a doll I'd like you to meet."
"I'd be honored, Princess Sofia," Doc smiled.
Meeting Maryanne
Sofia and Doc walked to Sofia's room. Sofia opened the door to her room and showed Doc inside.
"Wow!" Doc said, impressed, upon stepping inside.
"This is just a small inner hallway in front of my room," Sofia explained. "I use this area as an office, now."
Sofia led Doc to another door which Sofia opened. Sofia then led Doc into Sofia's bedroom.
"This is my room," Sofia happily announced.
Sofia's room was pretty much the same it had been when Sofia was a child. The only difference was that the play area was now occupied by two comfy couches facing each other. The area served as a place where Sofia and her closest friends could sit and talk.
"Such a fancy room, Princess," Doc said in awe.
"Just call me Sofia," Sofia smiled. "All my friends do."
"Thank you, Princess ... I mean, Sofia," Doc acknowledged.
"We're going to get along famously," Sofia happily said. "Let's have a seat on a couch."
"Thank you, Sofia," Doc responded as the two sat down.
"Since the two of us are becoming friends, what do you like to be called besides Doc?" Sofia wanted to know.
"My name is Dottie," Doc answered. "Although, most people just call me Doc."
"Then Doc it is," Sofia acknowledged. "Excuse me for a moment."
Sofia walked over to a trunk next to her bed, opened the trunk, and brought out a cloth girl doll with brown hair, wearing a pink dress, and a calico jumper. Sofia then went back to where Doc was sitting and sat back down.
"This is Maryanne," Sofia introduced the doll to Doc. "She came with me when Mom and I moved into the castle when I was a young girl."
"A pleasure to meet you, Maryanne," Doc smiled as she began to touch her magic stethoscope, then stopped. "Since your amulet now allows you to have a copy of my gift, perhaps you'd like to do the honors."
"Thank you," Sofia happily agreed. "How do I use the power?"
"I just touch my magic stethoscope, concentrate, and the toy comes alive," Doc explained. "I would think touching your amulet would do the same thing."
Sofia touched her amulet which started glowing for a few moments. Sofia's amulet then returned to normal.
"Hi, Sofia," a girl's voice came from Sofia's arms. Sofia looked down to see Maryanne ... alive.
"Maryanne?" Sofia asked in joy.
"Yes," Maryanne smiled. "I finally get to talk to you. This is a dream come true."
"It is for me, too," Sofia said in happiness as she hugged Maryanne. "We've come a long way, you and I."
"Indeed we have," Maryanne agreed.
"What the hey!?" Clover asked, shocked, as he hopped up. "Your doll can talk?"
"Yes, Clover," Sofia acknowledged, before turning to Doc. "This is my friend, Clover."
"Nice to meet you, kid," Clover said to Doc, before turning back to Sofia. "Oh yeah, right. She can't understand me."
"I can fix that," Sofia smiled as she gently put Maryanne down and walked over to a dresser in her room. Sofia then pulled out a clear crystal attached to a silver chain. "This will do nicely."
"Do nicely for what, Sofia?" Doc wanted to know.
"You'll see," Sofia happily responded as she brought out a wand and pointed it at the crystal as she recited a spell. Sofia then walked back over to Doc. "Here you go. This is for you."
"Thank you, Sofia," Doc happily acknowledged as she put the crystal around her neck. The crystal glowed for a few moments, then returned to normal. "What just happened, Sofia?"
"The crystal is fully active, now," Sofia explained, before turning to Clover. "Say something to Doc, Clover."
"Um, okay," Clover started. "Hello, kid."
"Your rabbit talked!" Doc exclaimed in awe.
"Your crystal gives you the ability to talk to animals," Sofia revealed. "You gave me a gift. It seemed only fair I give you a gift in return."
"Thank you," Doc said, pleased.
"You're welcome," Sofia smiled.
"So, I guess that makes you one of us now, kid," Clover happily remarked to Doc.
"I guess it does," Doc acknowledged, pleased.
Sofia, Maryanne, Clover, and Doc spent the morning having a pleasant conversation. A wonderful time was had by all.
Something shared
Meanwhile, in Candice's room, Candice and Jenny were happily talking.
"Candice?" Jenny inquired. "May I ask a question?"
"Of course, Jenny," Candice smiled.
"What's that silver watch thing you carry around with you?" Jenny wanted to know as Creamy walked up.
"Perhaps it's time Jenny knew our secret," Creamy suggested.
"Perhaps it is," Candice agreed, before turning back to Jenny. "I'm going to be completely honest with you. The truth is ... it's a time travel device."
"Like a time turner?" Jenny asked. "I heard you and Dorrie talking about the subject once."
"Nothing so simple as a time turner," Candice explained. "My watch device, called an Omni, allows me to travel not only in time, but to also travel to various places around the world."
"Amazing!" Jenny exclaimed in awe.
"If you think that's amazing ..." Creamy started, before stopping himself.
"It's okay," Candice gently said to Creamy. "Jenny might as well know everything."
"Know ... everything?" Jenny asked, puzzled.
"Dorrie and I have more than our Omnis," Candice revealed. "We also have a ship that allows us to travel through time and space."
"So you and Dorrie are both time travelers," Jenny remarked.
"Yes," Candice confirmed. "We belong to an organization of time travelers charged with keeping time on track."
"The two of you are amazing," Jenny praised. "You said your ship allows you to travel through time and space. I understand the time part. But what do you mean by space?"
"The ship, called a Tardis, allows us to travel anywhere off of this planet," Candice explained. "It's something very special. I think you should see it for yourself."
"I'd like that," Jenny happily agreed.
"Creamy," Candice started, "please get into my backpack. Then I'll put my backpack on, hold Jenny under my arm, and then I'll wand us to the Tardis."
Creamy climbed into the backpack. Candice then put the backpack on, held Jenny under her arm, and used her free arm to raise her wand. Candice then waved her wand over her head, and the three disappeared from Candice's room in a puff of smoke. In a few moments, the three appeared in the middle of the Secret Library.
"So, this is the Secret Library?" Jenny asked.
"Yes," Candice answered. "But how did you know?"
"I've heard you and Dorrie talk about it from time to time," Jenny revealed.
"She's got good hearing," Creamy said of Jenny.
"Thank you, Creamy," Jenny smiled, pleased.
"You know, Jenny," Candice started, "just how can you understand what Creamy is saying?"
"We toys can understand both humans and animals," Jenny answered. "It's just something we're gifted with."
"Makes sense," Candice acknowledged as she put Jenny on the floor and helped Creamy out of the backpack. The three then walked into the room where Dorrie and Candice's Tardis was housed. Jenny looked to see a tall tan metal box standing before them. The tall metal box was Dorrie and Candice's Tardis. Candice then opened the door of the Tardis.
"Shall we go in?" Candice suggested to Jenny and Creamy.
"In that cramped thing?" Jenny asked, taken off guard.
"Never judge a book by its cover," Candice gently advised as she, Jenny, and Creamy walked inside.
The Tardis was, of course, bigger on the inside than the outside, thanks to Time Lord Transdimensional Engineering. Jenny looked around the Tardis control room as Candice set some controls on the Tardis console. It was much like the control room of the Peter Capaldi Doctor, with the same kind of Tardis console, and two side panels. However, the walls of Dorrie and Candice's Tardis control room were slate blue, with circles on the walls reminiscent of Tardis control rooms seen in classic "Doctor Who". Also, the circles on the walls each emitted a soft white light, gently lighting up the control room.
"It's bigger on the inside than on the outside," Jenny remarked about the Tardis in awe.
"It is?" Candice joked. "I thought it was just me."
"Oh, Candice," Jenny laughed. "You have such a sense of humor."
"I try," Candice chuckled as she activated a switch on the Tardis console which caused the Tardis door to close.
"What now?" Jenny wondered.
"I said the Tardis could travel through space," Candice responded. "Time to give you a practical demonstration."
Candice activated the controls on the Tardis console, and in a few moments, the Tardis disappeared from the Secret Library.
"There we go," Candice announced. "We've landed. Establishing a force field around the Tardis with a breathable atmosphere."
"Candice?" Creamy wanted to know. "Where have you taken us?"
"Follow me Creamy, Jenny," Candice directed as she walked toward the Tardis door and opened it. "I give you ... the Moon."
"Our Moon?" Jenny wondered.
"The one and only," Candice smiled. "Take a look."
Creamy and Jenny looked in awe at the Moon's surface. In the distance was a blue sphere.
"What is that?" Jenny asked of the sphere.
"That's our Earth," Candice happily answered. "Our home."
"Wow!" Jenny exclaimed in awe.
Jenny, Creamy, and Candice stood looking at the sight for a long while. It was a wonderful way to spend time together.
April 8, 1872
It was a Monday afternoon at Enchancia Castle. Baileywick was taking care of some paperwork in his office when a knock came at his door.
"Come in," Baileywick invited.
The door opened, and in walked Dorrie and Candice.
"Ah, Princesses," Baileywick smiled. "I see you received my invitation to come here."
"Yes, Mr. Baileywick," Dorrie acknowledged.
"Is this about our luncheon?" Candice wanted to know.
"Yes, it is," Baileywick answered. "One of your princess friends has volunteered to help with food ideas. She'll be here at four this afternoon."
"Who?" Dorrie inquired, curious.
"She wants it to be a surprise," Baileywick revealed. "But I can tell you that the two of you will be pleasantly surprised."
At four that afternoon, Dorrie, Candice, Violet, Baileywick, and the Enchancian royal family stood at the top of the stairs leading to the castle. In a few moments, a flying carriage landed in the courtyard of the castle. Baileywick then stepped forward.
"Presenting Princess Dianna of the Kingdom of Yensid," Baileywick announced.
"Dianna!" Dorrie and Candice exclaimed in glee.
"Sorry," Dorrie apologized to Dianna.
"You don't like loud noises," Candice said to Dianna.
"It's okay," Dianna smiled. "It's a happy noise. And I'm happy to be here."
"Welcome, Dianna," Roland greeted as he stepped forward.
"Thank you, King Roland," Dianna acknowledged as she curtsied.
"You, Dorrie, and Candice have details to discuss," Roland warmly said to Dianna. "Our Royal Steward, Baileywick, will show you to a conference room where the three of you may talk."
"Most kind, King Roland," Dianna responded as Baileywick led her, Dorrie, and Candice into the castle.
"Princess Dianna is looking well," Queen Miranda observed to Violet.
"Yes, ma'am," Violet agreed. "Princess Dianna has been doing a fine job of adapting to her autism. She's going to make a fine midwife, along with Dorrie and Candice."
Baileywick led Dianna, Dorrie, and Candice to a conference room. Baileywick then left Dianna, Dorrie, and Candice to settle in.
"Well, here we are, together again," Dianna smiled. "This time, the three of us are together as princesses. Welcome to the club."
"Thank you, Dianna," Dorrie happily said.
"It's good to see you again, Dianna," Candice smiled.
"And it's good to see the two of you," Dianna smiled back. "Let's sit down and get started, shall we?"
"Sounds good," Dorrie agree as the three sat down. "Any ideas?"
"I'm glad you asked," Dianna responded. "I was thinking you could throw a lunch or tea party. You could have little cakes and cookies, cold sandwich fixings, a few hot meal options, and of course, sweets."
"Sounds excellent," Candice approved.
"You've done this kind of thing before, haven't you?" Dorrie asked Dianna, curious.
"Yes," Dianna smiled. "I love planning parties. My sisters and I have also prepared food for parties in the past. Any special sandwiches you and Candice would enjoy?"
"Well, I'm a sucker for peanut butter," Candice revealed.
"And I like chicken spread," Dorrie added.
"Sounds good," Dianna happily acknowledged. "We could also get some ideas from Sofia and Marie's birthday dinner tonight."
"It promises to be a grand affair," Candice commented. "The servants have been busy all day preparing the ballroom."
"Since we're now princesses, we're no longer in service for such things," Dorrie said on behalf of herself and Candice. "But, we were able to help in making Sofia and Marie's cake."
"What are they having?" Dianna wanted to know, curious.
"Sorry, we've been sworn to secrecy," Candice answered. "However, a lover of sweets such as yourself will find it totally acceptable."
"Then I look forward to being pleasantly surprised," Dianna remarked, pleased.
Meanwhile, in King Roland's study, Doc and her mother were having a conversation with Roland.
"I understand your former royal doctor had a Saturday clinic in Dunwiddie?" Doctor Maisha McStuffins asked.
"Yes, that's correct," Roland confirmed. "With his retirement, the Saturday clinic has been suspended for the time being."
"That's something I would like to discuss, sir," Maisha started. "I'd very much like to do the Saturday clinic."
"That's excellent news, Maisha," Roland happily acknowledged. "That takes care of one thing. But there is still another thing to be discussed."
"And what would that be, sir?" Maisha asked, curious.
"Your daughter has an extraordinary gift," Roland praised. "It's a gift that should be used to its full potential."
"I agree, sir," Maisha confirmed. "Now that my mother-in-law has explained what is going on, we're really quite proud of Doc's special abilities."
"The Saturday clinic has a top floor that has gone unused," Roland revealed. "I was thinking that Doc could hold a Saturday toy clinic on that top floor. I'm sure the children from the area would be quite grateful for your daughter's services."
"I'm honored, King Roland," Doc said, grateful. "Thank you."
"You're most welcome, Doc," Roland smiled. "Which leaves one final thing to discuss."
"Which would be?" Maisha wanted to know.
"I'd like to recommend that Doc be tested at Hexley Hall for any further magical abilities she might possess," Roland suggested. "If she's found to have further magical abilities, she could go to Hexley Hall full time as a student. What do you say, Maisha?"
"What do you think, Doc?" Maisha asked.
"I've never really thought about whether or not I might have other magical abilities," Doc admitted. "The idea appeals to me. I'd like to know one way or another."
"Then I guess that's a yes, sir," Maisha happily said to Roland.
"Great!" Roland exclaimed, pleased. "I'll make the arrangements. Meanwhile, I'll see the two of you and your family tonight at my daughter and Marie Perkins' birthday dinner."
"We're all looking forward to it, sir," Maisha happily acknowledged.
That evening
The guests were starting to arrive for Sofia and Marie's birthday dinner. As Dorrie and Candice were acting in their new roles as official greeters, they heard some footsteps coming up behind them.
"Well, well, well," a female voice happily said. "Look at the two of you, now princesses."
Dorrie and Candice turned around to see Duchess Matilda standing there.
"Duchess Tilly," Dorrie and Candice happily greeted as the three hugged.
"It's so good to see the two of you again," Tilly smiled. "By the way, did you get my request?"
"Yes, ma'am," Dorrie acknowledged. "The Knights of Enchancia are coming to the dinner, and we wouldn't dream of not having Hot Dog Bourbon Appetizers."
"Chef Andre is an old hand at making them," Candice added.
"I know Bartleby and the other knights will be delighted," Tilly approved when her eye caught somebody she knew. "Lydia. Over here, dear."
Sofia's biological older sister, Queen Lydia of Lacorinth, quickly walked up.
"Tilly," Lydia smiled as she walked up, before turning to Dorrie and Candice. "Princess Dorrie and Princess Candice. That has a nice ring to it."
"Thank you, ma'am," Dorrie acknowledged, pleased.
"Where's Eezeyal?" Candice asked, referring to Lydia's owl.
"Look up at the top of the wall," Lydia pointed to where Eezeyal was sitting with Dorrie's snowy white owl (Arnan) and Sofia's Mexican Spotted Owl (Hector).
"The three of them are good friends," Dorrie smiled as Lydia and Tilly walked into the castle.
At that moment, a flying carriage pulled by eight Jaguins arrived.
"Heads up," Candice announced. "Our friends from Avalor are here."
"Queen Elena, Princess Isabel, General Francisco, Lady Louisa," Dorrie greeted as she and Candice curtsied.
"There's no need for that," Elena smiled. "We're friends. And congratulations on becoming princesses."
"Thank you, Elena," Candice happily acknowledged.
"We've better be getting inside," Elena suggested.
"I'll be in shortly," eighteen-year-old Isabel responded. "I want to talk to Dorrie and Candice for a few moments."
"We'll see you inside, then," Elena smiled as she, Francisco, and Louisa entered the castle.
"Is the Taco Pie Dip and Tex Mex Soup ready?" Isabel wanted to know. "I know Sofia and Marie enjoy both."
"All ready," Dorrie reported. "Meanwhile, how's your Voyager training going?"
"Lady Di says I'm progressing nicely," Isabel proudly answered. "She says I'll be more than ready to become the new specialty Voyager in charge of maintaining royal history when she becomes Voyager Commissioner."
"I know you'll do well, Isa," Candice happily said.
"Thank you," Isabel said, grateful, as she, Candice, and Dorrie hugged. "And I know the two of you will make great princesses."
In a while, all the guests had arrived and had made their way to the castle ballroom. Dorrie and Candice came in to discover that the guests had broken up into groups and were talking among themselves. The Enchancian royal family were talking to the royal family of Esmeraudia, and the Pearson family. Tilly, Sir Bartleby, and their teenage daughter (Madeline) were talking with the Knights of Enchancia, Miss Honey, and Miss Honey's teenage daughter (Matilda). Lucinda was talking to Lily, Indigo, and Headmistress Lovegood from Hexley Hall. Elena, Francisco, and Louisa were talking to Lydia, King Graham, and their young daughter (Emily). The McStuffins family were talking to Prince Liang and Mrs. Hanshaw, as well as the Starwell family and the Vanoor family. And Amber was talking to Hildegard and Cleo.
In another part of the ballroom, James was talking to Vivian, Zandar, and Hugo. The castle kids (Timothy, Calista, Elizabeth, Kiera, and Catalina) were talking among themselves. Zooey, Desmond, Jun, Jin, Aileen, Nella, and Garrett were talking with each other. And Sofia was talking with Marie, Ruby, Jade, Oona, Isabel, Molly, Becca, and the three headmistresses from Royal Prep.
Elsewhere in the ballroom, Miss Elodie and her daughter (Lisa) were talking to Mrs. Greythorn, Mrs. Greythorn's daughter (Lynn), the Cook family (including Samantha "Sam" Cook), Eric Androcasia (King Roland's royal lawyer), Eric's daughter (Valentina), and Valentina's husband. Other guests were split up into groups across the ballroom.
Dianna was standing with her family and was taking in the scene. While Dianna was nervous around large crowds, she was getting more use to being around large crowds. Talking with Dianna and her family were Scarlett and Faith. Dorrie and Candice decided to walk over and join the conversation.
"Good evening," Candice greeted as she and Dorrie curtsied.
"Dorrie, Candice," Scarlett smiled. "Nice to see you here."
"Being princesses suits you," Faith happily said to Dorrie and Candice.
"Indeed," Dianna's father (King Jake) agreed as Baileywick stepped forward with eighteen-year-old Adair Starwell. Adair was Baileywick's royal steward apprentice.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Baileywick announced. "If everybody will be seated, we'll begin Princess Sofia and Marie Perkins' birthday dinner. Miss Starwell will escort you to the tables."
Everybody followed Adair to the tables and sat down. Sitting next to King Roland and the Enchancian royal family was Prince Liang and Mrs. Hanshaw.
"Congratulations, Helen, on being named Liang's personal advisor," Queen Miranda happily said to Mrs. Hanshaw.
"Thank you, Queen Miranda," Mrs. Hanshaw smiled.
"Helen has been quite helpful since the death of my Emma," Liang praised. "She's been a source of strength for Jade and me and has also had much useful advice on how to run the embassy. I thought it was time that Helen was promoted to personal advisor status."
Jade and Ruby were watching what was going on from where they were sitting with Sofia and Marie.
"Your mom has been promoted to my father's personal advisor," Jade happily whispered to Ruby. "It shouldn't be long now before they become even closer on a public level."
"I wish them nothing but happiness," Ruby whispered back to Jade. "Both of them deserve it so."
"May I offer you some beverages, ladies?" a familiar female voice asked. Ruby and Jade looked up to see eighteen-year-old Abby Murphy standing there.
"Hi, Abby," Ruby smiled. "Could we get some soft drinks, please?"
"Of course," Abby happily answered. "We have orange, grape, mango, and ginger ale."
"An orange drink for me, Abby," Jade requested.
"And I'll have a ginger ale, Abby," Ruby responded.
"Very good," Abby smiled. "I'll be right back with your drinks."
"It was nice that the Hogsmeade Medical College let you attend tonight," Jade said to Ruby.
"I'm ahead on my medical studies, so the school said it was okay," Ruby happily revealed.
In a little while, Sofia and Marie's birthday dinner officially began. To celebrate Sofia's nineteenth birthday and Marie's thirteenth birthday, everybody sang Happy Birthday to Sofia and Marie. Then a wonderful birthday dinner was served. After the dinner, it was time for Sofia and Marie's birthday cake to arrive.
"Ladies and gentlemen," King Roland started as he stood up. "It is time to bring out my daughter and Marie's birthday cake. Princess Dorrie, Princess Candice, and Lady Abby spent a considerable amount of time making the cake. If their past efforts are any indication, we are all in for a very delicious treat."
Dorrie, Candice, and Abby rolled out a large multi-layer cake on a large cart. To everybody's joy, it was a strawberry shortcake cake.
"Oh, my!" Sofia exclaimed in awe as she stood up. "The three of you know how much I love strawberry shortcake, and you've managed to make a cake version of it. This is absolutely wonderful. Thank you."
"Yes, thank you," Marie added, pleased.
"You're very welcome, Sofia, Marie," Dorrie happily acknowledged on behalf of herself, Candice, and Abby.
Everybody had a wonderful time enjoying the cake. Dorrie and Candice walked over to where Dianna was sitting.
"This is such a wonderful cake," Dianna praised.
"Thank you, Dianna," Candice smiled.
"I decided to take a larger piece of cake with fewer strawberries and extra whipped cream," Dianna revealed. "The cake is excellent, and the whipped cream goes well with it. We should have this at your luncheon."
"That's an excellent idea, Dianna," Dorrie agreed.
In a little while, everybody had finished eating their cake and it was now time for Sofia and Marie to open their birthday gifts. Sofia and Marie enjoyed opening each gift and went to great lengths to thank each gift giver. Dorrie and Candice smiled at the happy scene. As Dorrie and Candice stood watching what was going on, they noticed somebody familiar staring out at the ballroom from a hallway.
"Is that who I think it is?" Candice whispered to Dorrie.
"It would appear so," Dorrie whispered back. "We've better see what she wants."
Dorrie and Candice quietly made their way to the hallway where a white woman with curly blond hair was standing.
"River?" Dorrie asked the woman. "What are you doing here?"
"And how did you get here?" Candice wanted to know.
"You forget, I'm River Song," River smiled. "I have my ways."
"Really, how did you get here?" Dorrie asked. "I don't see you wearing a vortex manipulator."
"Well, if you must know, I borrowed ... The Doctor's Tardis," River revealed.
"You borrowed The Doctor's Tardis?" Candice asked in shock.
"He'll never know," River winked. "He's never known in the past."
"There's been more than one time?!" Dorrie exclaimed in shock. "I hope you've never borrowed our Tardis."
"Not to worry," River said in a reassuring voice. "The security protocols that the First Story Keeper and the two of you have set up would make it impossible for a stranger to use your Tardis without your permission."
"Well, it is a Type 44 Mark Three," Candice pointed out. "Advanced enough for such security protocols to be programmed into the system."
"What are you doing here, River?" Dorrie wanted to know, curious.
"I'm here to put you on the scent of another talisman," River answered as she handed a folded piece of paper to Dorrie. "You'll find the coordinates on this paper. And you've best take your Tardis. It's the only way he'll be convinced you're telling the truth."
"Who?" Candice inquired.
"The Doctor," River smiled. "Curly hair, long scarf, long coat, carries a bag of Jelly Babies. You'll know him on sight. I've best be going."
"You could at least give us more information about where we're going and what talisman we're looking for," Candice pointed out.
"Spoilers," River cautioned before disappearing into thin air.
"She must have used the transporter aboard The Doctor's Tardis," Dorrie theorized about River disappearing. "One thing is certain - we're on the hunt for another talisman."
(End of Chapter 15).
Behind the scenes
In this installment of "Behind the scenes", we have some recipes for foods featured in this chapter.
Hot Dog Bourbon Appetizers
(recipe obtained from the Internet)
Ingredients:
1 cup bourbon (Jack Daniels is not recommended)
1 cup ketchup
1 cup brown sugar
4 pounds hot dogs
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
Instructions:
Mix all of the liquids together in a pan, and heat at a medium heat. Cut hot dogs into bite size pieces and place in with the liquids. The longer you let this simmer the better.
Alternative (obtained from Brigade701):
Buy a 48 Oz package of Hillshire Farms Little Smokies and use the entire package of Little Smokies in place of the hot dogs. For this alternative, use 2 cups of bourbon, 2 cups of ketchup, and 2 cups of brown sugar.
Strawberry Shortcake Cake
(recipe obtained from the Internet)
Ingredients (cake):
2½ cups all purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1¾ cups granulated sugar
½ cup vegetable or canola oil
2 large eggs room temperature
2 large egg whites room temperature
2½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract|
½ teaspoon almond extract optional, but highly recommended
⅔ cup sour cream
¾ cup milk preferably whole or 2%, room temperature
Ingredients (filling):
3 cups sliced or diced fresh strawberries divided
2 tablespoons strawberry jam
Additional whole strawberries for garnish, optional
Ingredients (frosting):
8 ounces cream cheese softened to cool room temp
1 cup powdered sugar
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2-1/4 cups heavy whipping cream chilled
Instructions (cake):
Preheat oven to 350°F.
In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt until combined. Set aside.
Using a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (preferred) or a hand mixer, beat sugar, oil, eggs, egg whites, and extracts until combined. Add the sour cream and beat until combined. Add half of the flour mixture, beating until just combined. While still beating, slowly add milk, then the remaining flour mixture. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. Be careful not to overmix it.
Line three 8-inch cake pans with parchment paper and grease the pans. Evenly divide the batter between the three pans. Tap/gently drop the pans on the countertop a couple times to remove any air bubbles.
Bake for 18-22 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If necessary, rotate the pans once during bake time to ensure even browning. Place the pans on a rack to cool completely.
Instructions (filling):
Combine the strawberries and jam and set aside (these will be used for the filling and topping). Note: slice the strawberries for the filling (about 2 ½ cups), and dice the strawberries for the top of the cake (about ½ cup). You can slice or dice, your choice. You'll need about 3 cups total.
Instructions (frosting):
Place the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a large mixing bowl. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer with the whisk attachment, beat the mixture on medium speed until smooth. While the mixer is still whipping, slowly pour the heavy cream down the side of the bowl. Stop and scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl periodically. Increase the speed and continue whipping until the cream can hold a stiff peak.
Assembly:
Place one layer of cake on a platter. Top with one-third of the frosting, then top with about 1 ¼ cups of strawberries. Place another layer of cake on top and repeat. For the third/top of layer of cake, top with remaining whipped cream frosting, then place the remaining strawberries in the center. Decorate the outside with whole strawberries, if desired.
Taco Pie Dip
(recipe obtained from Brigade701)
Ingredients:
1 8 oz package soft cream cheese
1 cup sour cream
1 pkg taco seasoning mix
½ bottle taco sauce (mild)
1 head lettuce finely chopped
1-2 green peppers chopped
2-3 tomatoes diced
Shredded cheddar or Monterey jack cheese
Instructions:
The day before mix first three ingredients with a mixer until smooth. Spread mixture in a decorative pie plate or quiche pan and chill covered in the refrigerator overnight or until ready to serve. When ready to serve pour the taco sauce over the cheese mixture then add a layer of finely chopped lettuce, a layer of chopped peppers, a layer of diced tomatoes and finally top with a layer of shredded sharp cheddar or Monterey jack cheese. Serve with tortilla chips.
Tex-Mex Soup
(recipe obtained from Brigade701)
Ingredients:
1/2 lb. lean ground turkey
1/2 lb. lean ground beef
1 pkg. (1.25 oz) taco seasoning mix
1 pkg (1 oz) ranch salad dressing mix
1 can black beans, drained
1 can northern beans
1 can pinto beans
1 c. frozen corn
1 can chopped tomatoes with chilies
1 can stewed tomatoes
1 c. beef stock
chopped green onions
Instructions:
In a large pot, brown turkey and beef. Drain excess fat. Add seasoning mixes; mix well. Drain and rinse beans and add to meat mixture. Add corn, tomatoes, and beef stock. Bring to a boil and reduce to low to simmer for 15 minutes to blend flavors.
Alternative (obtained from Brigade701):
Use straight ground beef (1 lb.) in place of the ground turkey and ground beef mixture. Replace the 1 can of stewed tomatoes with 1 can of diced tomatoes. Also, slice up some smoked sausage links and serve alongside the soup.

You need the stethoscope to fully use the gift." - this was based on an idea suggested by Mark T.
Having an official luncheon hosted by Dorrie and Candice was based on an idea suggested by Brigade701.
Having Candice like peanut butter was the idea of dbug27.
Having Doc and Sofia meet each other (and having Sofia introduce Doc to Maryanne) was the idea of Mark T.
Having Doc repair James' female toy knight was the idea of MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury.
Having Hot Dog Bourbon Appetizers, Taco Pie Dip, and Tex Mex Soup was the idea of Brigade701.
Having James and Sofia each getting a copy of Doc's gift was based on an idea suggested by MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury.
Having Princess Dianna of Yensid come in to help plan the food for Dorrie and Candice's official luncheon was the idea of dbug27.

Hector is Sofia's Mexican Spotted Owl who first appeared in Chapter 47 of my story "Dorrie: Book 2" as a gift from Princess Isabel of Avalor.
Hikari is an alternate universe version of Hikari from "Digimon: Digital Monsters". Having Hikari appear in this story was the idea of Shaddowridder221. I decided to use Hikari's original Japanese name of Hikari to avoid confusion with Princess Kari from "Sofia the First".
"I decided to take a larger piece of cake with fewer strawberries and extra whipped cream," Dianna revealed. - this was the idea of dbug27.
King Arthur is the same King Arthur from the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
King Jake of Yensid and Princess Dianna of Yensid are characters created by dbug27 and are used in my stories with permission from dbug27. King Jake and Princess Dianna are from dbug27's story "a special princess".
"Lady Di says I'm progressing nicely," Isabel proudly answered. "She says I'll be more than ready to become the new specialty Voyager in charge of maintaining royal history when she becomes Voyager Commissioner." - this is a reference to events seen in Chapter 54 of my story "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia".
Lady Kayley is a character created by MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury and is used here with the permission of MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury. Lady Kayley is based on Kayley from "Quest for Camelot".
Lydia and Eezeyal are from GradGirl2010's stories "My Sister's Keeper", "My Sister's Teacher", and "My Sister's Acceptance", and are used in my stories with the permission of GradGirl2010. Readers of my stories will remember that Lydia (in my stories) is Queen of the Kingdom of Lacorinth (being married to King Graham of Lacorinth), and is also the royal sorceress of Lacorinth.
Madeline is based on Madeline from the "Madeline" book series but adapted for the "Sofia the First" universe.
Maryanne is the doll that Sofia brings to the castle in the "Sofia the First" premiere episode "Once Upon A Princess". Since the doll was never given a name in "Sofia the First", I decided to name the doll Maryanne so she would have a name in my stories.
Miss Honey and her daughter Matilda are inspired by Miss Honey and Matilda from the "Matilda" children's book and movie. Each has been adapted here for the "Sofia the First" universe.
Molly (A.K.A. Princess Molly of Niasia) first appeared in my story "Flashbacks". The Kingdom of Niasia is also originally from my story "Flashbacks". The Kingdom of Niasia is a kingdom I created for the "Sofia the First" universe that is located in the area we know as Niagara Falls. Regarding Niasia's size, using our Niagara Falls area as a reference, the Kingdom of Niasia would include the City of Buffalo and would stretch as far as the City of Toronto.
Nella and Garrett are actually teenage versions of Princess Nella and Sir Garrett from "Nella the Princess Knight".
Omni, Voyager, and Voyagers are from the "Voyagers!" TV series.
Princess Faith (Queen Scarlett's adopted daughter) is an earlier version of Faith seen in the "Torchwood" episodes "Dead Man Walking" and "Fragments".
Regarding Baileywick's first name of Arthur, the DisneyWiki "Sofia the First" area once mentioned that his first name was Arthur, and I decided to go with that.
River Song is from the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi episodes of "Doctor Who".
Tardis is from "Doctor Who".
"The Doctor," River smiled. "Curly hair, long scarf, long coat, carries a bag of Jelly Babies. You'll know him on sight. I've best be going." - this is a reference to the Tom Baker Doctor from "Doctor Who". Bringing the Tom Baker Doctor into "Ever Realm Chronicles" was a suggestion by Mark T.
The Hogsmeade Medical College is from Chapters 1,2, and 12 of "Ever Realm Chronicles" and is something I created for "Ever Realm Chronicles". The Village of Hogsmeade itself is from "Harry Potter".
The Kingdom of Esmeraudia is a kingdom created by Azure Wolf 227 and is used in my stories with permission from Azure Wolf 227.
The Kingdom of Yensid is a kingdom created by dbug27 and is used in this story with permission from dbug27.
The McStuffins family is based on the McStuffins family from "Doc McStuffins" but adapted for the "Sofia the First" universe. Having the McStuffins family appear in "Ever Realm Chronicles" was the idea of MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury (who also suggested that Maisha McStuffins be the new royal doctor). In the interest of transparency, it should be noted that a doctor who appears in dbug27's story "a special princess" is a distant relative of Doc/Dottie.
The Pearson family are characters created by epear96 and are used in my stories with the permission of epear96.
The Resurrection Gauntlet is originally from "Torchwood".
The royal family of Esmeraudia are characters created by Azure Wolf 227 and are used in my stories with the permission of Azure Wolf 227.

"Then Scarlett's theory was correct," Candice said to herself. "What theory?" Violet inquired. "When two people who have magical amulets and pins get the same gift at the same time, that gift gets passed on to other nearby connected amulets and pins," Candice explained. "It must have happened when Doc's gift was granted to James and Sofia." - this was based on an idea by Brigade701.
Time turner is from "Harry Potter".
Vortex Manipulator: a wrist-worn device designed to transport the user through time and space via the Time Vortex. River Song (of "Doctor Who" fame) occasionally used one. Captain Jack Harkness (of "Doctor Who" and "Torchwood" fame) also used one.
Warehouse Ten is from my stories "Dorrie", "Dorrie: Book Two", "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia", "Changes", and "Enchancia Castle". It is a warehouse housing paranormal artifacts that existed before the current Warehouse 13 (as seen in the TV series "Warehouse 13").
"Well, if you must know, I borrowed ... The Doctor's Tardis," River revealed. "You borrowed The Doctor's Tardis?" Candice asked in shock. "He'll never know," River winked. "He's never known in the past." - the fact that River occasionally borrows The Doctor's Tardis was revealed in the "Doctor Who" episode "The Husbands of River Song".
