Chapter 19: Major Moments (Part Two)
Song in this chapter: "What's going on?" from "Doc McStuffins".
April 15, 1872
At the Satu embassy in Dunwiddie, Liang and Helen were talking to a man - Reverend Williams of the local church in Dunwiddie.
"First of all, I want to congratulate the two of you on your upcoming marriage," Reverend Williams said.
"Thank you, Reverend," Liang happily acknowledged.
"I understand the two of you would like to get married as soon as possible," Reverend Williams noted.
Liang and Helen nodded their heads in agreement as Reverend Williams opened an appointment book he had brought with him.
"I do have an opening on the afternoon of Sunday, May 26th," Reverend Williams announced. "Will that work?"
"That will work perfectly," Liang smiled as he and Helen happily held hands.
"Then we have a date," Reverend Williams smiled back.
As Reverend Williams left, Liang and Helen happily talked to each other.
"I guess this is it, then," Liang smiled.
"This is like living in a dream," Helen smiled back. "A wondrous dream."
"I'll make sure the official announcement is released to the public," Liang announced. "There's going to be much to do before the wedding."
"We'll do it together, Liang," Helen acknowledged.
"As it should be," Liang happily agreed.
May 6, 1872
Personal diary entry of Dorrie Cooper (May 6, 1872).
Preparations are underway for the May 26th wedding of Prince Liang and Helen Hanshaw. Everybody in the Dunwiddie area is excited about the upcoming wedding.
Meanwhile, Candice and I have managed to find and recover two talismans - the Ox Talisman and the Rabbit Talisman. The Ox Talisman was in 2006 at the FSA Strongman World Championships. And the Rabbit Talisman was in 1896 at the Athens Olympics. We were able to use our Omnis to retrieve both talismans, and both are now in the hands of Scarlett.
In other news, we look forward to a relaxing supper here at Enchancia Castle. Princess Dianna of Yensid is visiting and has brought along her boyfriend (Prince Carter of the Kingdom of Farmington). All of us are looking forward to tonight's supper.
Early that evening, Dorrie and Candice were walking with Sofia toward the royal dining room. As they walked, they had a conversation.
"So, guys," Sofia asked. "You know anything about this Prince Carter?"
"Dianna has told us about him," Candice answered. "He's a half-year older than Dianna, and comes from the Kingdom of Farmington."
"A beautiful place from what I've read about it," Dorrie commented. "Farmington has rich farmland, along with beautiful mountains, lakes, and parks."
"Sounds wonderful," Sofia smiled. "What else do you know about Prince Carter?"
"Like Dianna, he has high-functioning autism, but exhibits no intellectual disability," Candice answered. "He attended school at both Royal Prep and Hexley Hall. At Hexley, he was in Kennicot House like Dianna was. He has a male orange and white cat named Joker who was his helper animal at both schools."
"Dianna and Carter met at a dance class at Royal Prep when they were both fourteen," Dorrie added. "They had their first kiss a few months later at the Yensid Valentines Dance. When they were fifteen, Carter asked Dianna to be his girlfriend on her birthday which falls on September 14th."
"That sounds so romantic," Amber happily said as she walked up. "Anything else we should know?"
"Carter wants to be a pediatrician," Candice revealed. "He'll start attending the Hogsmeade Medical College in September."
At that moment, Baileywick walked up. "Royal supper will be served in five minutes, ladies. Please make your way to the royal dining room."
As Dorrie, Candice, Sofia, and Amber walked toward the royal dining room, they continued their conversation.
"What about Prince Joseph who was with Dianna at last October's Prince and Princess Mixer in Niasia?" Sofia wanted to know.
"Joseph and Dianna are just good friends," Candice explained. "The way I understand it, Carter was busy with royal duties and he couldn't attend last October's Prince and Princess Mixer. So, Dianna and Joseph went together as friends. Joseph comes from a kingdom located near Yensid."
As Dorrie, Candice, Sofia, and Amber entered the royal dining room, the rest of the Enchancian royal family was already seated, along with Violet. Also at the table were Dianna and Carter. Carter had white skin with reddish-blond hair and wore glasses. He was also very nicely dressed.
"Ah, good," King Roland smiled. "Now we can get started."
In a few moments, the supper began. As everybody started eating, a pleasant conversation took place.
"I want to thank everybody here for being nice to my Dianna," Carter started. "You've become like a second family to her."
"It's our pleasure, Prince Carter," Roland smiled.
"Dianna is a good friend of our family, and we admire her very much," Queen Miranda happily added.
"You're most kind," Carter gratefully acknowledged.
In another room of the castle, Carter's cat (Joker) was having a meal with Creamy, as well as Luna (Abby's cat) and Maverick (Marie's cat). Like Creamy, Luna, and Maverick, Joker had been treated with a potion to rid him of his cat allergens, which allowed him to be in the same castle as King Roland.
"This is good," Joker commented as he ate a bowl of cut-up chicken.
"Chef Andre knows what we like," Creamy smiled.
"He's very good," Luna added, referring to Andre.
"And we occasionally get scraps when available," Maverick revealed. "Castle life is quite nice."
"It's the same way at my castle," Joker happily pointed out.
"What is Farmington Castle like?" Creamy asked Joker, curious.
"White brick walls, much like your castle," Joker answered. "The inside is quite comfortable. All the comforts one could want."
Meanwhile, in Cinnibar at Scarlett's palace, Faith was sitting at the royal dining table when Scarlett and Skylar walked in.
"I'm really impressed with how fast you're learning," Scarlett smiled as she kissed Skylar's forehead.
"Thank you, Mom," Skylar acknowledged, pleased.
"I take it Skylar's training is going well?" Faith wanted to know.
"Beyond expectations," Scarlett happily reported.
"And I have you to thank," Skylar cheerfully said as she walked over and hugged Faith. "You talked to Mom and got this started."
"You're welcome, my dear sister," Faith happily acknowledged as she returned the hug.
Elsewhere in the Ever Realm, under the water at Merroway Cove, Queen Emmaline was meeting with her daughter (nineteen-year-old Princess Oona).
"Oona, I have something to discuss with you," Emmaline announced.
"What is it, Mother?" Oona asked, curious.
"Prince Liang of Satu will be getting married on May 26th," Emmaline answered. "We'll need to send an emissary to represent Merroway Cove. Since you can use your comb to transform into a human, you're the logical choice to be that emissary."
"Thank you, Mother," Oona accepted. "I heard his wife died a while back, but that's all the news I know."
"He's marrying his assistant, a woman named Helen Hanshaw," Emmaline revealed.
"I know her from my time in Enchancia," Oona smiled. "A good woman."
"High praise, my daughter," Emmaline approved. "You'll make a fine emissary for us at the wedding."
"You bet she will," Cora, Oona's older sister, happily commented.
"We're so proud of you, Oona," Sven the seahorse remarked as he came forward.
Oona smiled in gratitude at Emmaline's, Cora's, and Sven's kind words. As Oona swam off to get ready, Emmaline turned to Cora and Sven.
"I would have gone myself, using the tub carriage," Emmaline explained. "But, I've been preparing Oona to be an emissary to the outside world. And this wedding will be the perfect opportunity for Oona to do so."
Cora and Sven nodded their heads in agreement.
Back at Enchancia Castle, the royal supper had ended and Carter was now in his guest room playing with Joker. As the two played, a knock came at the door.
"Enter," Carter invited.
The door opened, and in walked Dorrie and Candice.
"Carter," Dorrie started, "you've always been kind to Dianna, and we think that you deserve a gift for that."
"I love Dianna," Carter smiled. "My feelings are genuine. A gift for me loving Dianna is unnecessary."
"Well, it is," Candice smiled back as she handed Carter a small box. "Open it."
Carter opened the box and discovered a gold ring.
"Thank you," Carter said, grateful. "It's very handsome."
"It's more than that," Dorrie pointed out. "Candice and I have enchanted it so it gives you the ability to talk to animals."
"Does that mean I could talk to ... Joker?" Carter asked, intrigued.
"Yes," Candice smiled. "Put the ring on your finger."
Carter placed the ring on his finger. The ring glowed for a few moments, then returned to normal.
"Go ahead," Dorrie urged. "Talk to Joker."
"Hey, buddy," Carter smiled at Joker. "Got anything to say?"
"Carter?" Joker asked, unsure. "Carter? Can you understand me?"
"You bet I can, buddy!" Carter happily exclaimed.
"Wow!" Joker exclaimed in amazement. "I can now talk to you!"
"This is so wonderful," Carter said in happiness as he hugged Joker. "Thank you, Dorrie. Thank you, Candice."
"You're very welcome, Carter," Dorrie acknowledged with a smile.
Dorrie and Candice happily watched as Carter and Joker had a pleasant conversation. It was a fine way to end an evening.
May 25, 1872
It was a Saturday afternoon at Enchancia Castle. It was one day until the wedding of Liang and Helen. While the wedding ceremony was to be held at the local church in Dunwiddie, King Roland had volunteered the castle ballroom to be used for the wedding reception. In both the ballroom and the castle kitchen, there was a flurry of activity to get things ready. As Doc walked down a hallway, she noticed Violet talking to Dorrie and Candice.
"I wish there were more we could do," Dorrie wished.
"In our blood, we're working girls," Candice added.
"I know," Violet sympathetically responded. "But the two of you are princesses now."
"Yes, Mom," Dorrie and Candice acknowledged with a sigh.
"Tell you what," Violet smiled. "The two of you are still allowed to work behind the scenes in the kitchen. I'm sure Chef Andre could use some extra help."
"Thank you, Mom," Dorrie happily accepted.
"We're going now," Candice cheerfully added.
As Dorrie and Candice walked to the castle kitchen, Doc raced up to them as the three walked past a sea of servants working on various things.
"I've never seen it so busy here," Doc commented.
"Hi, Doc," Dorrie smiled. "A royal wedding reception doesn't happen every day. Everything has to be just right, and that takes a lot of work."
"We have a technical term for such work," Candice revealed with a wink. "We call it organized chaos."
"May I come along with you to the kitchen?" Doc asked. "I'd like to help if I can."
"We can always use another supply fetching person," Dorrie offered.
"Supply fetching person?" Doc wanted to know.
"A very important job," Candice answered. "A supply fetching person goes to the kitchen pantry and gets things needed by those doing the cooking. Think you're up to it?"
"Count me in," Doc smiled.
The three walked into the kitchen where they were greeted by Chef Andre.
"Ah! Princess Dorrie. Princess Candice. Please tell me you're here to help?" Andre wanted to know.
"We are, Chef," Dorrie answered.
"Good," Andre acknowledged, relieved. "We need help with the wedding cake."
"We'll get right on that, Chef," Candice responded. "Doc here would like to be a supply fetching person."
"Excellent," Andre smiled as he turned to Doc. "Report to your father over at that table. He'll fill you in on what he needs."
As Dorrie and Candice walked over to the wedding cake to help out, Doc walked over to where her father (Marcus McStuffins) was getting ingredients together for Wedding Soup.
"Hi, Dad," Doc smiled. "I've been assigned to be your supply fetching person."
"Excellent!" Marcus happily exclaimed. "We're going to make a good team, you and I. I'm going to need another two sacks of carrots from the pantry. You'll find a cart in there you can use. Can you do that?"
"No problem, Dad," Doc cheerfully answered as she went to the pantry.
May 26, 1872
It was now the afternoon of the wedding. At the Satu embassy in Dunwiddie, Helen was in a private room being helped to get ready by Ruby and Jade.
"I'm as nervous as a schoolgirl," Helen chuckled.
"You look fine, Mom," Ruby smiled.
"You're beautiful, Mom," Jade happily said to Helen. "I hope you don't mind me calling you Mom?"
"It's wonderfully perfect, Jade," Helen smiled. "We're becoming a new family, and I'm very happy to have you as a daughter."
As the three hugged, a knock came at the door. Ruby went and opened the door to find Sofia standing there.
"The carriage is here," Sofia reported.
"Thank you, Sofia," Helen acknowledged. "We'll be down shortly."
Elsewhere in Dunwiddie, inside the local church, the guests were seated as Liang stood with his brother, Prince Soji of Satu.
"You okay, Liang?" Soji wanted to know.
"A bit nervous, Soji, but okay," Liang acknowledged.
"That's to be expected," Soji said in a reassuring voice. "You're getting married, and to a fine woman."
"I just hope I'm not rushing things," Liang thought out loud.
"Emma would want you to go on with your life," Soji gently said. "I know she would approve from the great beyond."
"Thank you, Soji," Liang acknowledged.
In a few minutes, Baileywick appeared before those gathered.
"The bride is here," Baileywick announced. "Start the wedding march."
As the wedding march started, Helen walked in dressed in a beautiful white wedding gown. Walking beside her was King Toshi of Satu. Following Helen and Toshi were Ruby, Jade, Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice who were Helen's bridesmaids.
"She's beautiful," Soji happily whispered to Liang.
In a few moments, Helen, Toshi, and Helen's bridesmaids arrived at the altar. The bridesmaids (Ruby, Jade, Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice) adjusted Helen's wedding dress train, then sat down. Reverend Williams then walked up.
"Who gives away the bride?" Reverend Williams wanted to know.
"I have the happy honor of giving away the bride," Toshi happily announced as he stepped to one side.
"Welcome Friends, Family, and loved ones!" Reverend Williams started. "We are gathered together today in the sight of God and of each other as witnesses to celebrate the marriage of Liang and Helen. We hold Liang and Helen up to each other as a family, and a community of loved ones, to christen this step on their journey toward what we pray will be a long, happy, and healthy life together!"
As everybody gathered looked on, Reverend Williams continued. "Before we begin, let us bow our heads and ask God's blessing for Liang and Helen. Heavenly Father, We ask your blessing upon Liang and upon Helen. We come to you knowing that you have created them for a purpose, and we're confident, oh Lord, that your will for their lives contains some amazing triumphs for them as they walk together in your name. We ask that you bless them and keep them with you, and that you hold us accountable to do the same, Lord. In your Holy name we pray, Amen."
After a few moments, Reverend Williams went on with the ceremony. "Ladies and gentlemen, we hold marriage up as a sacred union between two people who are committed to loving one another and spending the rest of their lives together, faithful to each other, and to their journey together. But we also know as a society that marriage is a serious institution. It requires deep commitment, faith and trust in your spouse, and a lot of patience to make it work. In the days I've known Liang and Helen and in the conversations we've had discussing this ceremony, I've seen those things. I've seen their commitment to one another, their faith and trust, and their patience - and above it all, I've seen the love that these two wonderful people have for each other."
Everybody smiled as Reverend Williams continued. "Now in the book of 1st Corinthians, the Apostle Paul provides us with a beautiful description of the kind of love that a marriage needs. He writes, Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
Reverend Williams then turned to Liang and Helen. "Liang and Helen, I want to urge you to hold to that vision of your love for one another, because even though all of us here are behind you and rooting for you, life throws us challenges, and in the midst of those challenges, it's the kind of love Saint Paul was describing that is going to get you through it. Knowing this, it's time to declare yourselves to one another."
Reverend Williams turned his attention to Liang. "Liang, do you take Helen to be your lawfully wedded wife from this day forward - to have and to hold, in good times and bad, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health; will you love, honor, and cherish her for as long as you both shall live?"
"I will," Liang promised.
Reverend Williams then turned to Helen. "Helen, do you take Liang to be your lawfully wedded husband from this day forward - to have and to hold, in good times and bad, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health; will you love, honor, and cherish him for as long as you both shall live?"
"I will," Helen promised.
As Toshi brought out the wedding rings, Reverend Williams continued the ceremony. "Liang, Helen, it's now time to say your vows. Liang, please repeat after me: Helen, with this ring, I thee wed, and I do promise to love, honor, and cherish you, in good times and bad, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part."
Liang repeated the vow as he placed a ring on Helen's finger.
Reverend Williams then turned to Helen. "Helen, please repeat after me: Liang, with this ring, I thee wed, and I do promise to love, honor, and cherish you, in good times and bad, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part."
Helen repeated the vow as she placed a ring on Liang's finger.
Reverend Williams then faced both Liang and Helen. "Liang, Helen, having proclaimed your love for, and commitment to one another in the sight of Almighty God and these witnesses, it is my pleasure to pronounce you, by the power vested in me by the Kingdom of Enchancia, married! Liang, you may now kiss your bride!"
Liang and Helen embraced as everybody clapped for the happy couple.
Reverend Williams then turned to those attending the ceremony. "Gathered guests, it is my great pleasure to present to you Prince Liang of Satu and Princess Helen of Satu. Following this ceremony, the couple has asked that you meet them for a reception at Enchancia Castle. Thank you so much for joining us today. God bless you all."
An hour later, everybody had gathered in the Enchancia Castle ballroom for the wedding reception. At one point, Scarlett walked up, smiled, and shook Helen's hand before she gave a bow.
"Your Highness," Scarlett greeted.
"Your Highness," Helen returned with a nod.
"Just kidding, Helen," Scarlett smiled. "I know I'm a queen, but if my subjects or people from other kingdoms want to address me that way, that's fine. But I was never one to accept formalities from friends, even as an immortal."
"And that's a lot coming from you," Helen admitted.
"I wish we could party more than you have planned, but we've got to prepare for your daughter's coronation as a new Princess of Satu in a few days," Faith happily announced, walking up.
"Yes," Helen admitted. "I hope Ruby is prepared for this?"
"I'm quite prepared for this," Ruby announced as she walked up. "Jade's been getting me ready, along with Sofia, Lucinda, Amber, Dorrie, and Candice."
"The six best teachers I can think of," Scarlett approved.
As Helen, Ruby, Scarlett, and Faith talked, Dorrie and Candice were talking to Oona in another part of the ballroom.
"I've been hearing about a toy doctor you have here at the castle," Oona remarked.
"Yes," Dorrie admitted. "Her name is Doc. How did you find out about her?"
"I noticed her at the wedding, and somebody was kind enough to tell me about her ability," Oona answered.
"Is there something Doc can do for you?" Candice asked Oona, curious.
"Actually, I have a mermaid toy from my childhood that I carry around with me on trips," Oona explained. "She's seen better days. Her tail is coming loose, and I was wondering if your Doc could fix it?"
"I'm sure Doc can do something," Dorrie said in a reassuring voice.
"We'll talk to Doc after the reception and set something up," Candice promised on behalf of herself and Dorrie.
"Excellent," Oona smiled.
At that moment, Baileywick walked up.
"If everybody will take their seats, a meal will be served in a few minutes," Baileywick announced.
Everybody took their seats and soon the servants were serving the guests. After the meal, it was time to serve the wedding cake. Liang and Helen cut the first piece, then the servants took over cutting pieces of cake for guests. After that, it was time for Liang and Helen's first dance as a married couple. Everybody smiled in happiness as Liang and Helen danced.
That evening
Oona was sitting in the Enchancia Castle sitting room as Dorrie, Candice, and Doc walked in.
"Oona, this is Doc," Dorrie announced.
"A pleasure to meet you, Princess," Doc acknowledged as she curtsied.
"The pleasure is mine," Oona smiled. "Please, sit down."
"I understand you have a toy that needs fixing, Princess," Doc noted as she sat down.
"Yes," Oona confirmed as she took out her cloth mermaid toy. "This is Arista. She's been with me since I was a child. Her tail is coming loose."
"I understand," Doc acknowledged. "You do understand, Princess, that I can make toys come alive?"
"Yes," Oona happily answered. "I've been looking forward to seeing that."
"Then let's get started, shall we?" Doc suggested as she took a mermaid toy out of a bag she had been carrying. Doc's mermaid toy was made out of Parkesine, a rubber-like plastic material that had been invented in the mid-1800s.
"Who is this?" Oona asked, curious.
"This is Melinda," Doc happily answered. "She's one of my toy friends."
Doc waved her hand over her stethoscope, and Melinda came to life.
"Hello, Princess," Melinda greeted. "It's a pleasure to meet you,"
"Oh, my!" Oona exclaimed, impressed. "I'm happy to meet you, Melinda."
"If you'll hand me Arista, Princess, we'll get started," Doc announced.
As Oona handed Arista to Doc, Doc noticed that Arista was made of a waterproof cloth material. Doc waved her hand over her stethoscope, and Arista came to life.
"Oh, my!" Arista exclaimed in awe. "I'm alive. I can talk."
"Arista!" Oona exclaimed in joy as she hugged Arista,
Arista tried to wiggle a bit, but couldn't because her tail was loose.
"Oh, no!" Arista cried out in shock.
Doc looked at Arista and gently started singing. "Hey what's going on? Tell me what's wrong. I know there something we can do. It might not be clear but that's why I'm here. Tell me what's bothering you. Got something on your mind. Don't you keep it inside. You're gonna be fine. Hey, tell me what's wrong. What's going on?"
"I'm having trouble moving," Arista cried. "I can't get my tail to move."
"Let me have a look," Doc suggested as she examined Arista's tail. "Your tail is loose, and is not making proper contact with your upper body."
"Is there anything you can do?" Arista asked, hopeful.
"I'm sure Doc can come up with something, Arista," Oona said in a reassuring voice.
"Yes I can," Doc said in a confident voice as she brought out a bottle of glue from her bag. "This is a special glue designed for underwater use. I'll put some where your tail connects to your upper body."
Doc applied some glue to where Arista's tail connected to her upper body. After a few minutes, Doc instructed Arista to move her tail.
"I can move my tail again!" Arista cheered in happiness. "Thank you."
"You're very welcome, Arista," Doc smiled.
"Doc," Oona said with tears of happiness in her eyes, "you've done Arista and me a very great service. Thank you."
Oona then happily hugged Doc. As Oona hugged Doc, Oona's comb glowed for a few moments, then returned to normal.
"What was that?!" Oona asked in shock.
"Perhaps your comb gave you a gift as a reward for thanking Doc with a hug," Dorrie theorized.
"I have an idea!" Candice announced as she turned to Arista. "Turn toy-like. Like you were before."
"Okay," Arista agreed as she turned stiff as a toy as she had been before.
"Oona," Candice started. "Concentrate, and wish for Arista to be alive again."
Oona concentrated as she looked at Arista. In a few moments, Arista came to life again.
"Did you do that, Oona?" Arista asked, puzzled.
"It would appear I did," Oona answered as she happily hugged Arista. "this means we can talk whenever we want."
"Oh! This is so wonderful," Arista said in glee as she returned the hug.
"Yeah!" Melinda cheered in happiness.
"We'll leave the two of you alone to talk," Dorrie smiled.
As Dorrie, Candice, Doc, and Melinda left the sitting room, they turned back for a moment to see Oona and Arista happily talking to each other. It was a wonderful way to end the evening.
(End of Chapter 19).

Having Oona appear in this chapter was based on a suggestion by Brigade701.
Having Oona wanting to meet Doc was the idea of Mark T.
Having Scarlett and Helen talk with each other was the idea of Jake H Voronkov (who also provided some of the dialog for the scene).
