He was still mildly pissed that his wife "made" him come to the grocery. To think he could be finishing his modeling, a glass of porto at his lips. God… He just wanted to go into his basement, turn on some music, he already had a Leonard Cohen cd ready on the radio, and finish polishing his boat before painting it. He was lost in his thoughts when something purple caught his eyes. It took him less than a second to recognize his two employees. What were they doing shopping there? And together? He remembered suddenly that Flynn lived in this part of town, too.
That explained why there. But what were they doing together, that he couldn't explain. He knew for a fact that they were not involved in any undercover operation. So the only explanation … No. He could not believe that Raydor, rulebook Raydor, could be involved with one of her subordinates. He saw her move closer to the other man and lean against his body. Flynn opened one of his arms, welcoming her against him. « Ok, floor done, butter done, milk too. What's left? » She was looking over his shoulder, probably to their grocery list.
« MMmmh, I saw some butternut squash near the entrance. We could do a gratin, that would change. And we need some ginger for your tea. » Answered the man, caressing her back absentmindedly.
« Ok but with some diced ham in. I need a break from tofu and so does Rusty. » She laughed, looking into his eyes, their noses near touching.
« You got yourself a deal. » He moved a little bit away from her, just enough to reach into her leather bag and pull out a fishnet reusable bag. « I'm going to get the veggies. Go and get your chocolate, you're running out. »
It was the fluidity of their exchange that surprised him. Nothing was forced, nothing was awkward. They moved in symbiosis. She coming closer to the cart to put down some items, him going toward her. He heard them talk about making pizza from scratch the next day. It held so much familiarity it caught him off guard.
Maybe it was the fact that he knew both of them since they were rookies. A very newly wed Raydor and a playful Flynn. They were both married back then, just not together. They all knew her husband, as shitty as he was and it was difficult to picture her with anyone else. He saw her evolve too. Gone was the smiling young woman he knew so long ago. She had become cold, calculating, it made her a fantastic captain but it was hard to imagine her able to share the intimacy required by being a mother or a wife.
But here she was. Smiling, flirting, carefree. She looked younger like that, a lot more like the rookie he used to know.
