Ever Realm Chronicles - a Sofia the First fanfic
Chapter 30: Secrets Revealed
June 29, 1882
It was a Thursday afternoon at Ornburgh Castle. In Candice's study, Candice looked at two-year-old Princess Carol who was taking a nap on Candice's couch. Carol had been born a little over two years ago (April 14th of 1880) and was Everett and Candice's natural child. Sitting on the couch, keeping a watchful eye on Carol, was twelve-year-old Rachel. Candice smiled at the touching scene. Candice had two precious daughters who were her pride and joy.
Candice turned her attention back to what she had been doing - writing in her diary. Her diary was magically enchanted so that nobody but her could read its contents. As she wrote in her diary, Candice thought back to past events.
Queen Candice's Personal Diary: June 29, 1882.
Rachel, Holly, Ying, Cassie, and Kendra are all twelve-years-old now. Their training with Scarlett went well, and now the five of them are being trained by Chrysta to be Protectors. Their training comes at just the right time since the Witch Revolutionary Front (WRF) is still a threat, and we adult Protectors of the Ever Realm could eventually use all the help we can get.
Meanwhile, onto another subject. A few days ago, Rachel and Kendra discovered mine and Lucinda's secret life as Voyagers.
June 26, 1882
The school year was over, and summer vacation was just starting. At Ornburgh Castle, Rachel had invited Kendra over for the day. Holly, Ying, and Cassie were busy with things going on in their castles but would be over later in the day. Meanwhile, Rachel and Kendra were walking in an out-of-the-way hallway. As they walked, they noticed Candice and Lucinda appear in the distance out of thin air.
"We have company," Lucinda whispered to Candice as she motioned to Kendra and Rachel.
"Let's play it by ear," Candice suggested.
"Okay," Lucinda agreed.
"Mom," Rachel greeted Candice.
"Mom," Kendra greeted Lucinda.
"Rachel," Candice smiled.
"Kendra," Lucinda also smiled, a bit nervous.
"Mom?" Rachel asked Candice. "How did you and Queen Lucinda apparate without any magical-looking effect?"
"Yes, how did you?" Kendra also asked, curious.
"Well, we knew we'd have to tell them someday," Candice pointed out to Lucinda.
"Yes, we did," Lucinda agreed.
"Tell us what?" Rachel wanted to know.
"Let's go to my study," Candice suggested. "We can talk in private there."
"Okay," Kendra nervously acknowledged, not sure what was going on.
Candice, Lucinda, Rachel, and Kendra walked to Candice's study. As they stepped inside, Candice closed the door to the study. Everybody then sat down.
"Okay, here we go," Candice announced as she and Lucinda pulled out their silver Omnis. "These are what we used to appear out of thin air."
"Those?" Kendra scoffed. "Those are just pocket watches of some kind."
"I can assure you, Kendra, that they are not pocket watches," Lucinda started. "I take it the two of you know about time turners?"
"Yes," Kendra and Rachel acknowledged.
"We've heard about them," Rachel started. "But we've never seen one. The ones that are around are closely guarded."
"Are your watches time turners?" Kendra asked Lucinda and Candice, curious.
"No," Candice answered. "They are much more advanced than time turners."
"Then what are they?" Rachel wanted to know.
"Each is called an Omnitron, or Omni for short," Lucinda explained. "Candice and I belong to a special organization whose members travel through time."
"Our job is to keep the past, present, and future on track," Candice added. "If something goes wrong in the past, present, or future, we set things right ... restore things to the way they should be."
"Sounds like an important job," Rachel noted.
"It is," Candice agreed. "It's also a secret job. The public doesn't know about us or our organization. It's better that way."
"I can see why," Rachel said in understanding. "People tend to be scared of things they don't understand. Better to operate in secret."
"Exactly," Lucinda smiled as a knock came at the door. Lucinda and Candice quickly put away their Omnis.
"Enter," Candice called out.
The door opened and in walked Chrysta.
"Hello, ladies," Chrysta greeted as she shut the door behind her. "Now that Rachel and Kendra know about your time-traveling jobs, Commissioner Spencer wants the four of you to meet her in her office. A formal meet and greet as it were."
"Wait!" Kendra exclaimed. "You're ... one of them?"
"I should say so," Chrysta winked. "I'm the first-ever fairy Voyager!"
"Voyager?" Rachel asked.
"We're called Voyagers," Candice explained. "We should get going. Commissioner Spencer will be waiting for us."
"I'll meet the four of you there," Chrysta announced as she opened the cover of her Omni, adjusted some dials, and pressed a button on her Omni. In a few moments, Chrysta disappeared into thin air.
"I'm never going to get used to that," Rachel remarked.
"Neither am I," Kendra agreed.
"Don't worry," Candice said in a reassuring voice to Rachel and Kendra. "The two of you will get used to it before you know it. Rachel, come and wrap your arm around mine."
"Kendra, you do the same with me," Lucinda gently directed.
As Rachel and Kendra took Candice and Lucinda's arms, Candice and Lucinda pulled out their Omnis, opened the covers on their Omnis, and adjusted some dials.
"Don't let go of our arms," Lucinda said to Kendra and Rachel.
Candice and Lucinda each pressed a button on their Omnis, and the four soon disappeared into thin air.
Voyager Command
At Voyager Command, a man and a woman in their twenties stood waiting at a Voyager arrival point. In a few moments, a female computer voice made an announcement - "Incoming Voyagers. Incoming Voyagers."
"Oh, this is exciting, Alexander," the woman said to the man. "Candice and Lucinda's daughters are making their first step in their future as Voyagers."
"I've been looking forward to this, Blossom," Alexander agreed. "We've both seen the future, and their futures are bright ones."
At that moment, Candice, Rachel, Lucinda, and Kendra appeared out of thin air.
"Wow!" Kendra exclaimed, impressed.
"What was that?!" Rachel asked, excited and impressed.
"A time vortex," Lucinda explained as Alexander and Blossom walked over.
Rachel and Kendra looked at Alexander and Blossom. Alexander and Blossom were white skinned with both having brown hair. Blossom wore glasses.
"Hello," Alexander greeted Rachel and Kendra. "I'm Alexander Armsworth, and this is my wife, Blossom."
"A pleasure to meet you, ladies," Blossom smiled at Rachel and Kendra.
"If you'll follow us, Commissioner Spencer wants to meet with the four of you," Alexander said to Candice, Lucinda, Rachel, and Kendra.
Alexander and Blossom led Candice, Lucinda, Rachel, and Kendra away from the Voyager arrival point. In a few moments, the six were in an outside area. As they walked, Rachel and Kendra looked around in awe. Buildings there were in a futuristic art-deco style. People walking on sidewalks were dressed in clothing from a variety of time periods. It was all quite new to Rachel and Kendra.
"It's a lot to take in at first," Blossom smiled at Rachel and Kendra. "You'll eventually get used to it."
In a few minutes, the group arrived at a large building. A few moments later, the group arrived at Commissioner Spencer's office. Alexander then knocked on the door.
"Enter," a woman's voice responded.
Alexander opened the door as he, Blossom, Candice, Lucinda, Rachel, and Kendra walked in. "Your guests as requested, Commissioner," Alexander announced to Commissioner Spencer.
"Ah, good," Commissioner Spencer acknowledged, pleased.
Candice and Commissioner Spencer nodded at each other. The two were old friends. Candice then thought back to when the two had first met. Candice and Dorrie back then had been around the same age Rachel and Kendra were now.
Flashback:
Dorrie and Candice were temporarily working at King Magnus' castle helping with King Magnus' upcoming marriage. Dorrie and Candice walked up to the door of the sitting room in King Magnus' castle. Candice then knocked on the door.
"Come in," a woman's voice invited.
Candice opened the door, and she and Dorrie wheeled a tea cart into the sitting room. Candice then closed the door and stood next to Dorrie. A woman was sitting at a table going over some papers and had her back to Dorrie and Candice.
"The tea and cookies for your meeting with Miss Keever, ma'am," Dorrie announced.
The woman rose from the table and turned to face Dorrie and Candice. Immediately, Dorrie and Candice recognized the woman for who she really was. Dorrie and Candice curtsied, then bowed their heads in respect. For a few moments, the two found themselves frozen in place, awestruck.
"Come on, girl!" Dorrie thought to herself. "You're acting like a flipping idiot! This is royalty. You've met royalty before."
"You can do this," Candice thought to herself. "Never mind that Dorrie and I are standing before a legend."
"Ma'am," Dorrie managed to address the woman. "It is an honor to be standing in the presence of ... Diana, Princess of Wales."
"A great honor, ma'am," Candice added.
"I was wondering when I would meet Violet's daughters," Diana smiled at Dorrie and Candice.
"You know us, ma'am?" Dorrie asked Diana, taken off guard.
"Yes," Diana happily responded. "The two of you are very well known in Voyager society. People there are watching the two of you with great interest, and are looking forward to the day when you become Voyagers in your own right."
At that moment, a maid walked into the sitting room.
"Begging you're pardon, Ma'am," the maid said to Diana, "Miss Keever will be a little while longer. There are some last-minute adjustments to her wedding gown."
"I understand," Diana acknowledged as she turned toward Dorrie and Candice. "These two fine young ladies have been keeping me company. I'll spend some more time with them as I wait for Miss Keever."
"Then I'll leave the three of you to your conversation," the maid said as she left the room, and closed the door behind her.
"Ma'am," Dorrie said to Diana, "If it's not too bold of me, how are you alive? I mean, you died in that car accident in Paris in 1997."
"The criminal Voyager Drake visited me a day before that happened," Diana recounted. "He seemed like a fine person at first. Suddenly, he grabbed my arm, took out his Omni, and transported us a few days into the future."
Dorrie and Candice gasped at the account.
"All of a sudden, Drake was strutting around all proud as a peacock," Diana continued. "He was boasting about how he had changed history by preventing my death. Then, a security team arrived from Voyager Command. Drake managed to escape, and I was taken to Voyager Command while some Voyagers were sent to correct the timeline. Needless to say, the timeline was corrected, and my death officially took place as far as history was concerned. But, as you know now, I didn't die. And, I couldn't be sent back to my time. So, Voyager Command offered me a chance at a new life - a life as a specialty Voyager dealing in royal history."
"Wow!" Dorrie and Candice exclaimed in awe.
End of flashback, and back to the present.
"It's good to see you again, Commissioner," Candice greeted.
"And it's good to see you again, Candice," Commissioner Spencer smiled. "I thought we were on a first-name basis."
"Sorry, Commissioner ... I mean, Diana," Candice apologized. "Old habits die hard. I always go back to my maid days when I addressed those above me by their titles."
"Of course," Diana remembered as she turned to Rachel and Kendra. "I've been expecting the two of you. You're right on schedule."
"On schedule?" Kendra asked, puzzled.
"You'll find in Voyager society that theirs a timeline for everything ... including the arrival of potential recruits," a woman's voice came from the entrance to Diana's office. Rachel and Kendra turned around to see standing there ... Miss Gayle Lovegood, former headmistress of Hexley Hall. Gayle had retired as headmistress two years ago. Standing next to Gayle was her cat (Wilfred) and her dog (Ronin).
"You're ... a Voyager?" Rachel and Kendra asked Gayle, surprised.
"I've been a Voyager for several years," Gayle revealed. "When I retired from Hexley, I took up residence here at Voyager Command. Naturally, I brought Wilfred and Ronin with me."
"Nice to see you again, Wilfred, and Ronin," Rachel smiled as Kendra walked over and gently petted Wilfred and Ronin.
"The report you wanted, Commissioner," Gayle announced as she handed a computer pad to Diana.
"Thank you, Gayle," Diana acknowledged as she took the pad. "I imagine it was interesting seeing the Wright Brothers make their first airplane flight at Kitty Hawk."
"It was," Gayle smiled.
"Airplane?" Kendra asked, not knowing the term.
"Like a flying carriage ... without the flying horses," Gayle explained. "Powered by its own power source instead of horses."
"Sounds like something I'd like to see," Kendra remarked, impressed.
"Looks like we might have a historical observer in the making," Diana said of Kendra.
"Historical observer?" Kendra wanted to know.
"Somebody who goes back and forth in time observing major historical events," Lucinda answered. "Historical observers watch such events and report about them in detail for the Voyager Archives. A very important job and Gayle is one of the best."
As Rachel watched Lucinda and Kendra, Rachel's attention turned to Wilfred and Ronin who were talking to each other. Thanks to Rachel's Amulet of Delphtor, she could understand what Wilfred and Ronin were saying.
"You're doing a good job sitting here," Wilfred praised Ronin. "As a treat, after we're done here, we'll go to the dog park. You can have a good run there while I relax."
"Thank you, Wilfred," Ronin smiled. "You're a good big brother."
"My pleasure, Ronin," Wilfred smiled back. "You're a good little brother."
At that moment, a woman walked in who looked somewhat like Chrysta ... if Chrysta was human.
"Sorry I'm late, Commissioner," the woman apologized. "I had to make a quick stop in 1891. I was alerted by the Watch Center that American financier Russell Sage was about to be blown up by an explosion in his office. I managed to get him out of there just in time. Got a green light, which means the timeline is on track there."
"Nicely done, Chrysta," Diana praised.
"Chrysta?" Rachel asked, taken off guard.
"Oh, yeah," the woman acknowledged. "I forgot I'm still in human form. I'm able to change my appearance thanks to a small device implanted in me called a Transformation Manipulator. I should change back now."
The woman concentrated, and in a few moments changed back into Chrysta as a fairy.
"Amazing!" Rachel exclaimed, impressed.
"Oh, it's nothing, really," Chrysta smiled. "Just good old Voyager tech."
"Chrysta is one of our best field agents," Diana explained. "You see, field agents travel to different time periods and if there is a problem, they correct the situation. Sometimes, a field agent comes across a situation on their own, and other times a field agent is dispatched to a time period by the Watch Center which keeps an eye on all time periods."
"Sounds like an important job," Rachel remarked. "Sounds like something I might like to do sometime."
"Looks like we might have somebody interested in joining us, Commissioner," Chrysta winked at Diana.
"Two people interested in joining you," Kendra spoke up. "I like the idea of historical observers."
"If, of course, we might someday be selected," Rachel added, hopeful.
"Candice, Lucinda," Diana started. "Your daughters seem to have taken an instant interest in joining our ranks. What do you have to say about this?"
"I had always hoped that one day Rachel might follow in my footsteps," Candice acknowledged.
"And I had always hoped that Kendra would one day follow in my footsteps," Lucinda added.
"Well, then, let's sit down and discuss this," Diana suggested.
"Blossom and I will make sure you're not disturbed," Alexander said as he and Blossom walked out of Diana's office.
"And I have a report to make out," Chrysta added as she left Diana's office.
After the meeting
Candice, Rachel, Lucinda, and Kendra walked out of the building housing Voyager Command. As they walked, the four had a conversation.
"So, everything is set, then," Lucinda commented. "Kendra and Rachel will travel with us in an unofficial capacity, learning along the way."
"It's the way Dorrie and I started," Candice revealed.
"Aunt Dorrie is a Voyager, too?!" Rachel asked, taken off guard.
"Oh, yes," Candice smiled. "Along with your father, Uncle Frederick, Aunt Bethany, Aunt Louise, and Grandmother Violet."
"We have Voyagers on our side of the family, too," Lucinda revealed to Kendra. "Aunt Sofia, Aunt Amber, Aunt Hikari, Uncle James, Grandfather Roland, and Grandmother Miranda."
"Oh my!" Rachel and Kendra exclaimed in awe.
"We'd better be getting home," Candice suggested as she and Lucinda opened up their Omnis and adjusted the dials. "You girls are expecting company."
Rachel held Candice's arm, and Kendra held Lucinda's arm. Candice and Lucinda each pressed a button on their Omnis, and the four disappeared into thin air. In a few moments, after traveling through a time vortex, the four found themselves back at Ornburgh Castle.
"There we go," Lucinda smiled. "Back in Ornburgh, and only a few moments after we left."
"Now remember, girls," Candice started, "what you've learned has to remain a secret."
"On my honor," Rachel promised.
"On my honor," Kendra also promised.
"Good," Lucinda acknowledged, pleased.
Rachel and Kendra spent the next few hours in the Ornburgh Castle library reading. Afterward, they went to the castle courtyard where Holly, Ying, and Cassie arrived via flying carriages. After exchanging pleasantries, the five walked to a small training field located within the castle walls.
"Chrysta should be here soon," Rachel announced.
"Actually, I'm here right now," Chrysta grinned as she walked up from nowhere.
"Where did you come from?" Holly asked, not having seen Chrysta arrive.
"Magic, Holly," Chrysta happily answered.
Rachel and Kendra smiled at each other, theorizing how Chrysta had actually arrived - by Omni.
"Everybody ready for some Protector training?" Chrysta asked.
Rachel, Kendra, Holly, Ying, and Cassie all cheered "Yes!"
"Then let's get started," Chrysta suggested.
As Chrysta started that afternoon's training, Candice and Lucinda watched from a distance.
"A new generation of Protectors is taking shape," Candice noticed proudly.
"Indeed," Lucinda smiled in agreement. "The Ever Realm's future is in safe hands."
Queen Candice's Personal Diary: June 29, 1882 (Continued).
So, Rachel and Kendra now know that Lucinda and I are Voyagers. Now that Rachel knows, I felt it was time to introduce her to another secret.
June 27, 1882
It was a Tuesday morning at Ornburgh Castle, and Candice walked Rachel down to the basement area of the castle.
"Mom?" Rachel inquired. "You said you had something to show me. But why are we heading to the basement?"
"Because that's where the something is," Candice answered. "Keep in mind this should be considered above top secret."
"I understand, Mom," Rachel acknowledged. "Although, I have to admit you've sparked my curiosity, especially with the above top-secret bit."
"You'll see what I mean once I show you what I want to show you," Candice smiled.
Candice led Rachel through some basement hallways until they came to a door. Candice opened the door and motioned Rachel to follow her. As Rachel entered the room, her eyes saw a tall tan metal box with a door on it.
"Follow me, sweetheart," Candice said in a reassuring voice.
"That isn't going to fit both of us," Rachel pointed out.
"You're in for a surprise," Candice smiled. "Come. By the way, this is called the Tardis."
"Coming," Rachel acknowledged as she and Candice walked into the Tardis and found themselves inside the Tardis control room. The Tardis control room was much like the Tardis control room of the Peter Capaldi Doctor, with the same kind of Tardis console, and two side panels. However, the walls of the Tardis control room were slate blue, with circles on the walls reminiscent of Tardis control rooms seen in classic "Doctor Who". Also, the circles on the walls each emitted a soft white light, gently lighting up the control room. In addition, the Tardis console and the two side panels were also slate blue.
"Now wait a minute," Rachel said, taken off guard, as she quickly stepped out of the Tardis in shock. After walking around the Tardis for a few moments, Rachel stepped back inside, a bit nervous. "You do realize this thing is bigger on the inside than the outside?"
"I know," Candice said in a reassuring voice. "Please don't be afraid. I can explain everything."
"Okay," Rachel acknowledged, still a bit nervous.
"As I said, this is called the Tardis," Candice started. "It can travel anywhere in space and time. It was built by an extraterrestrial race known as the Time Lords."
"Extraterrestrial?" Rachel asked, not familiar with the term.
"Somebody not of this world," Candice answered. "Allow me to explain further."
"Of course, Mom," Rachel agreed.
Candice told Rachel about the Time Lords. Candice then told Rachel about the First Story Keeper, how the First Story Keeper was a renegade Time Lord, and how the First Story Keeper gave his Tardis to Dorrie and Candice when he advanced to such a physical and spiritual level that he could simply use his mind to travel without the need for a Tardis.
As Rachel listened to Candice, one thought went through Rachel's mind - life from this point forward was going to become far more interesting, even more interesting than finding out about the existence of Voyagers.
(End of Chapter 30).
Behind the scenes
In this installment of "Behind the Scenes", we'll look at Princess Carol, Everett and Candice's natural-born daughter, and Rachel's younger sister.
Princess Carol's full name is Carol Violet Beckenbauer. Carol was named after an Ornburgh queen of the past. Everett and Candice, when picking a middle name for Carol, decided upon Violet (in honor of Candice's adoptive mother).
Princess Carol has white skin and sandy blonde hair. Carol will eventually develop Candice's White Malificent abilities. It will also be discovered that Carol has superior intelligence.
As Carol grows older, her and Rachel's bond will grow stronger. Rachel will teach Carol how to cook, and Rachel will also prepare Carol as she starts school at Royal Prep, Hexley Hall, and the Wendarby Institute. When Carol comes of age, Rachel will prepare Carol for a Voyager career. The two sisters will be very close, one could say as close as Elsa and Anna from "Frozen".
Author's notes
Alexander and Blossom are grown-up versions of Alexander and Blossom from the 1978 Disney-made-for-tv movie "Child of Glass".
Apparate and time turners are from "Harry Potter".
Drake, Omni, Voyager, and Voyager Command are from the "Voyagers!" TV series.
Gayle Lovegood is originally from my stories "Dorrie", "Dorrie: Book Two", and "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia", and is an ancestor of Luna Lovegood from "Harry Potter".
Having Wilfred and Ronin appear in this chapter was based on a suggestion by MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury. Meanwhile, I added to the suggestion by having Gayle Lovegood as a Voyager.
Hikari is an alternate universe version of Hikari from "Digimon: Digital Monsters". Having Hikari appear in this story was the idea of Shaddowridder221. I decided to use Hikari's original Japanese name of Hikari to avoid confusion with Princess Kari from "Sofia the First".
Ronin is a character created by MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury and is used in my stories with the permission of MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury.
Tardis and Time Lords are from "Doctor Who".
The First Story Keeper was first revealed to be a renegade Time Lord in Chapter 20 of my story 'Once Upon a Time in Enchancia".
The flashback with Dorrie, Candice, and Diana is from Chapter 49 of my story "Dorrie".
The Kingdom of Ornburgh is where Prince Frederick came from in "Sofia the First". The kingdom was never given a name in "Sofia the First", so I named it Ornburgh.
The Scarlett Warrior (A.K.A. Scarlett) (A.K.A. Queen Scarlett) (A.K.A. Queen Scarlett Katherine Felchenerow) is a character created by Jake H Voronkov and is used in my stories with permission from Jake H Voronkov.
