Chapter 1: May RNGesus Have Mercy

A/N: This is just something of a break from writing my Lord of the Rings fanfic. I needed something to inspire me and give me something else to move to. I WILL be working on said fic after I do a chapter or two of this.

It all started with an explosion for Sam - his death, that is. Some strange creatures were attacking someone else in the area and throwing explosives. There were gunshots and screams everywhere. And then the poor bastard ran right into the store where Sam was hiding. A grenade arced through the air, bounced twice at Sam's feet… and then the world went white.

Sam awoke feeling… nothing. No pain, no discomfort, just existing and floating in The Void. Ah, right, The Void. He called it that because he couldn't see anything, not even himself. And just when he started to wonder if this is what hell was like, a screen appeared in front of him as a voice called out from The Void.

{You died! Congratulations on being chosen as the host for a new version of the gamer system! This one is experimental and has no stats, but rather, for each being you kill, you gain a new power. This is purely RNG, so good luck! Oh, but here are your freebie powers for dying. May RNGesus have mercy on your soul in hell! And good luck!}

Gained:

Solar Armor: The ability to create armor around the user's body from solar energy. Sub-power of Solar Constructs. Variation of Elemental Exoskeleton.

Chemical Interaction: The power to interact with chemicals without causing reactions. (Such as being able to stick one's hand in acid unharmed) Variation of Interaction.

Chi Augmentation: The power to focus one's chi and enhance one's physical capabilities. Sub-power of Chi Manipulation. Variation of Energetic Physical Augmentation.]

After he finished reading some of the details of his new abilities (Links at the bottom), he disappeared in a flash of light, appearing in a dirty alleyway with an odd-looking horned creature looking at him. It has red skin and, in general, seems to look rather like the stereotypical demon from the internet.

Before Sam can really get his bearings and comprehend what is going on and where he is, the creature laughs madly and charges at him with a broken bottle. On instinct, Sam activates b and swings out with a fist.

The creature doesn't live long as it's head explodes on impact with his fist with a rather horrific POP and SQUELCH sound. This causes Sam to freak out, as he didn't really mean to hit the creature that hard. Just hard enough to get it to leave him alone was all.

'Oh God! OW! OH GOD! OW! I just killed someone! I mean, sure, they seemed like they were going to kill me first, but I just killed someone!' As Sam starts to freak out, a PING occurs as a screen appears in his face, breaking him out of his panic attack.

Gained:

Gamer's Mind (nerfed): The user will no longer be panicked or scared and has their emotions muted outside positive ones. (Warning: Strong mental effects like Killing Intent and Spells can still effect user. Gamer's Mind is capable of being overwhelmed by extreme emotion and skills as well.)

Wood Defense: The ability to use wood to defend oneself. Technique of Wood Manipulation. Variation of Plant Defense.]

Instantly, a calm unlike any Sam had ever experienced fell over him, and the panic receded. And while a distant part of him felt this disturbing, the description of the power put that part at ease. So with that, Sam peeked out of the alley, and what he saw shocked him.

A city with a red sky. With all kinds of creatures, much like the one he just killed walking or even flying about. Then he sees the signs. SO MANY SIGNS all saying a variation of "Welcome to Hell." This sends a small surge of panic through him before Gamer's Mind (nerfed) ends that before it can grow with a tidal wave of calm and peace.

"This is hell, huh?" Sam said as he looked around cautiously before he started walking off in a random direction. As he walks around, he starts noticing stares of caution being thrown his way. Sam had yet to realize it, but not only was one of his fists and some of his face splashed with an alarming amount of blood, but he himself had been changed by his trip to hell and his death.

Before Sam could figure out why the demons were staring at HIM of all people with caution and, in some cases, fear, he bumped into someone, causing them to fall over.

"Oh! Sorry, I wasn't particularly paying attention to where I was going." Sam reached out a hand to the admittedly cute (And judging from their features, female) owl creature. Then he noticed his hand were all covered in blood, and he blushed and switched hands.

Octavia had been just minding her business, listening to music, and trying to ignore her bodyguards as best she could on one of the few occasions she was let out of the manor on her own. Then she bumped into someone and was knocked off her feet.

When she had looked up to snap at whatever idiot had knocked into her like that, her voice died in her throat. In front of her was a male Goetia owl about her age with deep purple feathers that end in bright white tips. His plumage is the same deep purple everywhere except his arms, where from the elbows down, his arms are white. Or at least one, as the one he is currently holding out to help her up is covered in blood.

He seemed to realize this as his feathers ruffled a bit, and he blushed as he switched hands. Aaaand she just realized he was waiting to help her up.

Sam waited for a bit, steadily getting more flustered as the girl stared at him for an increasingly awkward time. Finally, she shook her head as her feathers ruffled, and she blushed rather cutely. Then he took his hand and helped her up. "Are you okay?" Sam asked, wanting to make sure he hadn't hurt her in their crash.

"I-I'm fine." She answered with a slight stutter before looking up at him through her lashes. "What is a Goetia Owl doing all alone out here?" She asked as her feathers ruffled when she realized how that could be taken as rude. Thankfully, Sam doesn't seem to really mind, as he answers absent-mindedly. "I am rather lost, honestly."

'What the heck is a Goetia Owl and why does she seem to think I am one?' Sam thought to himself confusedly. "What is your name, by the way?" Sam asked.

"My name is Octavia." She answered, finally giving him a name to put to her face. "And what is your name?" Octavia asked shyly.

"My name is Samuel, but you can call me Sam." Sam said as he smiled, though that really felt weird.

"Well, Sam, you can come back to the Goetia Estate. Father probably won't mind you sticking around until your family comes to get you. You can also use one of our washrooms to get that blood off of you. Mother might throw a fit, but fuck it. We'll burn that bridge when we get to it." Octavia said as she turned to lead the way back to the estate.

Sam followed her, rather eager to get the blood off of his arm and maybe get his orientation back.
