Callie rolled onto her left side, sinking into the bed for a beautiful, fleeting moment. Then the moment fleeted—assuming "fleeted" is even a word. An annoyed huff escaped her as she pondered the irony of her baby's apparent lack of gratitude for the comfort she provided, allowing for a full night's sleep and respite for her ribs. Rolling over once more, she discovered Arizona gazing at her with unnaturally large, doll-like blue eyes, which struck her as somewhat eerie.
"Seriously, babe, can you please refrain from tossing and turning tonight? I can't get any sleep with all your movements, and I have to head to work in a few hours," Arizona sighed, edging closer and resting a hand on Callie's stomach. Only she was permitted such intimacy; the one time and intern had tried to do it, Mark and Arizona made them cry.
Callie sighed, weary of being the 'forest' for some 'mighty oak', or whatever term Mark used to describe their baby. "You know, everyone talks about how great this is—the first kick, and heartbeat, and holding them. But no one mentions how uncomfortable it is to do everything," she ranted, slightly soothed Arizona's gentle strokes over her abdomen.
"You can't sleep on your stomach because you'll like.. Crush the kid. I can't sleep on my back because then it hurts like a bitch in the morning," At these complaints, she heard Arizona laugh quietly, "And if I sleep on my side, she shifts over to my rib and tries to break it. Please, Zona, make it sto-op…" She whined, grabbing Arizona's hand and squeezing it. Arizona hated that nickname from anyone but Callie, absolutely despised it.
Glancing down at her abdomen, Callie tapped her fingers in exasperation. "Come on, I'm already 35 weeks in, and the last five are just for sore winners, right?" Her words were met with a strong kick, prompting a scoff. "Now she's awake."
"Calliope," Arizona softly sighed. "We want the baby to stay put, so don't listen to your mommy's complaints, okay little baby?" She addressed the baby with a smile before returning her gaze to Callie. "They need to stay in there, healthy and strong, even if it means enduring a bit of discomfort. In a few weeks, you'll be wishing to feel those little kicks, and then we'll get to hold them."
The brunette rolled her eyes before wrapping an arm around Arizona. And finally, she fell asleep.
It had been six hours. Six hours that felt like an eternity. Filled with stress, Spanish cursing, and a few quiet conversations. Since it was three weeks early, it wasn't too big of a deal. Mark and Arizona had watched, feeling helpless as Callie seemed to suffer hour after hour. Though neither left her side once. Even through the threats, and bone-crushing grip she held on her girlfriend's hand. Finally, just when she felt she couldn't take any more of it and her body was going to give out, she was going to ask for some drugs (since she had stupidly decided to tough it out, 6 hours earlier. Because how could a tiny six pounds cause so much pain?) A shrill cry pierced through the room.
"It's a girl." Callie beamed and feigned surprise, (though she had already called it) and squeezed Arizona's hand. Mark smiled as he took his spot next to Lucy. "He stole my line!" She mockingly rolled her eyes. "I should've figured though, since you're all doctors. Well, she looks perfect."
Callie looked over at her girlfriend, who was still holding her hand. There were tears in both their eyes. Then, uninvited fear began rolling around Callie's mind and ricocheting around her insides. Maybe this was the last straw for Arizona, watching Mark and I be parents. Too afraid of the answer to think about it much more, with a soft voice, she raised an eyebrow. "Babe, are you alright?"
Arizona nodded and shot her girlfriend a supportive, watery smile. "She's so pretty, Calliope. She really is." She wiped a tear from her eyes before leaning over and kissing her girlfriend on the forehead. "Okay, are you ready to meet your baby?" Lucy smiled a little, handing her the infant.
Then came tears. Lots of them. Happy ones, of course. She was perfect. Ten perfect little fingers, ten adorable little toes, a small dusting of black hair, a cute face, and the undeniable Sloan nose. After a few moments of staring in awe at every little movement and sound the baby made, a nurse came in with a tiny little bassinet. "We just have to take her for some routine tests, but she should be back soon."
Reluctantly, they gave the baby up at the promise of her momentary return. With the distraction of her insanely perfect baby gone, the exhaustion caught up to her and hit her like a truck. Noticing her sudden drop, Mark made his way back to the door. "Well, I think I'm gonna go share the good news. Do you want me to bring the girls now or later? Last I saw they were down in the waiting room."
To be honest, though she felt selfish, all she wanted was sleep. "Just bring them by later, make sure they get something to eat, please. Also, make sure their homework is done." Callie responded weakly.
With a nod and smile, he was on his way out the door. The brunette laid in the hospital bed with her eyes closed for a minute while Arizona stood at the foot of the bed. Sure, she had a horrible set of eye bags, and she had made Arizona's hand hurt like hell, but the blond still stared at her like she was the most beautiful thing she had ever encountered. Repeating the action of kissing her on the forehead, the blond sat back on the couch to let her girlfriend get some well-deserved rest.
"Where are you off to?" Callie said quietly, her eyes fluttering towards open as she fixed her gaze on Arizona. "I'm just right over here, babe," Arizona answered, tucking some hair into a ponytail. "I'm not going anywhere."
"I could sleep a lot better if you were here next to me." She smirked back at Arizona, patting the empty space next to her. "Calliope…" She sighed in a rather disapproving tone. "Arizona…" Callie mocked her in the same airy tone. "Come on, just lay right here next to me for a little bit? Pleaseeee… I need you." She whined, gesturing back to the empty space.
"Alright, fine." Arizona rolled her eyes in disapproval as she climbed into the bed next to Callie. "This is only because I know you won't take no for an answer and you really need to get some rest."
Sighing in content, Callie laid her head on Arizona's chest. "I think it's just because you love me, but okay. Whatever you say." Arizona smiled, stroking her hair softly. "Fine, you win. Now go to sleep." Though no answer came because in the short time she had been wrapped in Arizona's arms, the brunette had fallen asleep.
Around twenty minutes later, the door creaked open. Arizona disentangled herself from Callie as she tried to shush the nurse and sleeping baby girl. Quietly, she padded towards the door where the nurse had parked the little bassinet.
"How were all her tests? Did she do alright?" Arizona asked in a hushed, yet unintentionally concerned voice. "Perfectly, Dr. Robbins. Your little girl is just fine." She let out a breath and stroked some of the little black hairs to the side. Arizona had seen many babies in her time as a doctor. Everyone calls newborns cute, which in her opinion is usually false. But her baby, she was adorable.
"Would you like me to take her back up to the nursery so you can get some more rest?" Arizona looked back at Callie, who was sleeping soundly, then the baby. "I think she'll be okay in here."
The nurse nodded once at the blond before picking up a clipboard and exiting the room. Arizona wheeled the bassinet to the couch and stared down at the little girl, who balled her tiny hands up in fists and swung them. "Woah, there. Coming out swinging?" She chuckled. Then, she opened her big, brown, identical-to-Callie eyes and looked up at Arizona. Cradling her daughter safely in her arms, Arizona leaned back in her seat. She pulled the little bow down on her head and caressed her cheek with the back of her thumb.
"Hey there," She started, her cheeks starting to hurt from the incessant smiling. "This is your mommy speaking. Well, one of them, but we'll figure that out later, right?" Arizona took a beat. "Right. Your name is probably Sofia, but we'll figure that out soon. You have two sisters, and you are the luckiest little girl in the world because they are incredible just like you, and they are so excited to meet you."
The baby looked up at her again, scrunching her face up. Arizona took that as a sign to continue her monologue to her daughter. "I know, having a pretty big age gap with two girls with huge personalities might be strange now, but you'll learn to love it and embrace them for all their crazy things. So we don't have a perfect name yet, but you do kinda look like a Sofia? Do you like it?"
The baby yawned up, and she made a sarcastic shocked face. "Excuse me! I'll take that as a no.. I know I ramble, you'll have to get used to it." Back on the hospital bed, Callie opened her eyes a little. She saw Arizona on the couch, talking to their beautiful baby, which totally melted her heart. She had been worried about how Arizona would take to the actual baby once she got here. Now she knew for certain that Arizona was in, completely in, and they could be a real family.
"You see, little girl, you changed a whole lot. You don't even know it yet. You made us all so happy and excited. Your big sister Addison especially, she will be crazy now that we're sure you're a girl. Even Isabella, who you will realize is totally different than what meets the eye; you think she's all hardened and cool on the outside, but she's just the softest thing on the inside. She won't admit it, but she has been over-the-moon about getting another little minion. You made me realize how much I needed and loved everyone. Especially I love your mama so much, and I think your daddy has grown on me a little too. Don't you dare tell him I said that, we can keep it a secret. I promise to love you and your sisters and your mama forever, okay?" She lifted the baby up and planted a delicate kiss on her nose.
"Are you giving a speech to our newborn?" Callie laughed softly, taking the baby from Arizona.
But Arizona's speech was interrupted by a steady set of knocks at the door. Two heads peeked inside, followed by a pink teddy-bear balloon that floated in. "Fuck," Isabella muttered, grabbing the string before it could fly away. Then, they both saw the little ball in Callie's hands and dropped their backpacks at the door.
"Say hello to- your sister." Callie realized she didn't have a name, so she just smiled. Isabella's jaw practically hit the floor in unison with Addison's "Sister?"
"Mhm." Isabella quickly took the small bundle wrapped in a white hospital blanket from her mom and sat on the couch with Addison. Though she refused to let anyone acknowledge it or photograph her, the teenager had a few tears streaming in thin lines down her face.
She was tiny.
And the most adorable little thing they had ever seen.
And she was squishy.
And their sister.
"She's a she? That's a lot of girls right?" Addison raised an eyebrow, rocking her sister slightly. Callie and Arizona both laughed, Addison was right. That's a lot of girls. "Does she have a name?"
"We were trying to think of some, do you two have any ideas?" Callie sighed, leaning back against the pillow. The two sisters whispered to each other for a moment, before turning back to the two women. "I mean, we already picked Sofia for a girl?" Addison said, looking back down at the tan-skinned baby. "I think she looks like a Sofia." Isabella reiterated.
After some careful discussion, they finally settled on a name: Sofia Noel Torres-Robbins. A perfect name for a perfect baby. It honored Arizona, and the other parents, had Spanish roots that could pass as English, and it fit the actual baby. It checked every box, and then some. Though the last name made Mark a little upset, he didn't care that much in the end.
A/N: this is absolute cute scrap and it kinda sucks.. but i've been going through some personal stuff lately, so this might be as good as it's gonna get for a minute, im being spread pretty thin, but this is my favorite story to write up on.
pls ignore the fact her last name is robbins-torres even though arizona isn't really her legal perent, she'll get rights to sofia soon enough! i wrote it so confusingly, but yeah he's sofia's dad (i just didn't want to make them hook up like in grey's), sorry ig!
P.S. there is a huge chapter overflow with this story because this has already been published on wattpad, so there's really no point in making all of you wait a week for a completed chapter!
