At Eliza's shout, Alex kicked the door open, and they burst inside.
Martha Washington was sat in a chair with a guard standing over her, pointing a gun at her head. While Washington was sat at a desk with two more armed guards standing over him and another in front of him.
At the same time Alex and Eliza burst into the room, so did Jefferson and Maddison. Martha's guard spun around to point his gun at Jefferson and Maddison and one of the guards with Washington pointed his at Eliza and Alex.
The guard aiming at Eliza and Alex smiled when he saw their musket, "You aren't going to shoot me," he said to Eliza,
Eliza raised her eyebrow "Won't I?"
"Of course not, you're just a woman."
Eliza pulled the trigger and shot the guy straight in the chest. He went down with a thud. Both of the other armed guards turned their guns on Eliza and Alex. Eliza lunged to the left, dragging Alex with her, as the two men fired.
Jefferson turned and fired at the guard by Martha, hitting him in the head.
Maddison dived forward, knocking Martha off her chair and to the ground, "Keep down," he said.
Washington used the chaos to lunge at the guy next to him. He grabbed the guard's gun and tried to wrestle it out of his hand.
Eliza sat up from her pile on the floor, "Alex," she cried, offering him the end of the gun.
Alex grabbed hold of it and aimed it at the last guy. The two of them fired and the guard went down.
Washington and his guard were still in a wrestling match over the guard's gun. Washington slammed his elbow into the side of the guard's head, and he cried out in pain. This was enough for him to loosen his grip on the gun and Washington wrenched it out of his hand. He raised it and, without hesitation, shot the guard.
Everything was silent for a moment, then Maddison called out "Is everyone Ok?"
Everyone called their affirmation as they got to their feet.
Washington rushed over to Martha and started checking her over,
"I'm fine," Martha said, "George, I promise, I'm fine."
Eliza walked over to the nearest guard and riffled through his pockets. She pulled out a set of keys and tried them on Alex's manacles. To her surprise, they sprung open and fell away from his wrists, "Ah-ha!" she cried.
Alex took the keys and freed Eliza's wrists, before looking around at the bodies in the office,
"Sir, do you know what's going on?"
"He wanted me to name his son my heir," Washington said, nodding at the one of the guys,
"What?" Eliza cried,
"Those papers were to make it official,"
Alex walked over to the desk and looked over the documents, "I, President George Washington, name Erik William Jenkins as my sole heir, upon my death he will receive…" Alex trailed off, "I don't know if this would even hold up," he said, "A good enough lawyer could definitely dismantle this,"
"I don't think that's the most pressing issue right now," Eliza said,
Washington nodded his agreement, "His son, Erik, is here, he left the room just before you showed up,"
Alex straightened up, "What are your orders General?"
"Schuyler, what have we got in terms of weapons?" Washington asked,
"Two pistols and…four muskets,"
"Ok, Hamilton, Schuyler, you two each take a musket. Jefferson, Maddison, you two take the pistols. Hamilton, get Martha to safety, and see if you can find any other hostages. Take Maddison with you,"
"Yes Sir,"
"Schuyler, Jefferson, with me, we'll go look for Erik,"
"Yes Sir," Eliza replied.
Alex, Eliza, and Washington each grabbed a musket and turned to leave the office,
"Hang on!" Jefferson cried, and everyone turned to look at him, "She has been acting weird since all this started" he said, pointing at Eliza, "And now you're treating her like a solider," Jefferson shook his head and looked straight at Eliza, "Who are you? Because you are not just Hamilton's wife,"
"I really am just Eliza Hamilton, wife and mother," she said, but Maddison shook his head,
"No, you've been making plans and taking charge all evening," he cried,
"So, what? I'm not allowed to have opinions on what we should do?"
"You just shot a guy without blinking!" Jefferson cried,
"We saw you strangle a guy!" Maddison added,
Eliza glanced helplessly at Washington,
"Tell them," Washington said,
"I told you the truth, I really am just Eliza Hamilton, but I used to be Lieutenant Colonel Schuyler, a spy for the continental army,"
Jefferson and Maddison's mouths fell open, "You're a spy‽" Jefferson gasped,
"No, I used to be a spy,"
Maddison turned to Alex, "Did you know?"
Alex threw his arms up, "Of course I knew!"
"Schuyler's work was invaluable," Washington interrupted, "but it is still highly classified. Her identity is still a secret and cannot leave this room. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes Sir," Jefferson and Maddison said.
"If nobody had any more objections, let's go."
They all filed at of the room and split into two groups. Alex, Maddison and Martha made towards the exit, while Eliza, Washington and Jefferson made their way through the building, looking for any sign of Erik Jenkins.
They made their way towards the main chamber. As they approached, they heard the sound of footsteps from inside the room. Washington nodded at the door. The three of them crept over and Washington took hold of the handle. They raised their guns and burst in.
A guy who could only be Erik was pacing at the front of the room. He froze when he saw the three of them, but it didn't last long,
"You!" He shouted at Washington, pulling out his own gun, "What have you done to my father?"
Eliza and Jefferson crept away from Washington. They started to weave between the seats in the room, trying to make their way down to Jenkins.
"He's dead," Washington replied,
"No! You're lying!"
Washington shook his head, "I'm sorry son,"
Erik cocked his gun, "Then I'll make his last wish come true. I'll kill you and secure our family legacy!"
"No!" Eliza cried, "No!"
Erik turned to look at her, but he didn't take his gun off Washington,
"You don't want to do that," Eliza said, as gently as she could manage,
"Why not?"
Eliza slowly placed her gun on the ground by her feet and raised her hands, in what she hoped was a calming motion, "Your father wanted the best for you right? That was his last wish?"
"My father wanted me to be President!" Jenkins growled,
"Right. And why did he want that?"
"He said I could change the world. That I'd be much better at it than he is," Jenkins jabbed his gun in Washington's direction.
"Ok, so that was his way of trying to give you the best life, right? Killing us, that's not respecting your fathers final wish,"
Jenkins spun around so he was fully facing Eliza, in the process taking his gun off Washington and pointing it at her, "You don't know my father!" he snapped,
"No," Eliza agreed, "But I know he was the mastermind behind this mission. You don't have to do this, it's not too late for you to walk away and live a happy normal life,"
"How can I live a happy normal life without my father‽" Erik shouted.
Eliza heard the door behind her open and she glanced around to see Alex and Maddison run in.
"I know it feels like this is your only option right now, but it isn't-"
"Yes, it is!"
"No, think about your father and what he wanted for you,"
"He wanted this!" Jenkins pulled the trigger of his gun, firing directly at Eliza.
Eliza shut her eyes, but no pain came. There was a shout, and a thud and Eliza opened her eyes just in time to see Alex collapse onto the ground in front of her. Eliza heard the sound of somebody else firing their gun from behind her, and Jenkins falling to the floor; but she couldn't take her eyes off the blood spreading from Alex's stomach. She dropped to her knees in front of Alex and gathered up her skirts and pressed them into Alex's wound, to try and stem the bleeding.
Alex gasped in pain, "Eliza," he said weakly,
"No, no, no, no. Don't talk. Save your energy,"
"Maddison, go get a doctor," Washington shouted. Eliza could hear him running over to her position.
"Now we're even," Alex said, reaching out to take hold of Eliza's hand,
"What?"
"I took a bullet for you, I returned the favour,"
Eliza squeezed Alex's hand. Tears were rolling down her face, "That wasn't a favour I ever wanted returning."
Alex's eyes fluttered shut, just as Maddison hurried back in with a doctor,
"Alex?" Eliza cried, "Alex!" She felt Washington take hold of her arm and gently pull her away from Alex,
"Come on, Eliza, let the doctor take Alex,"
"No! I can't leave him,"
"Come on, we'll meet them at the hospital."
Eliza reluctantly got to her feet and took a few steps away from her husband.
The doctor knelt down and scooped Alex up.
Washington turned to Jefferson, "I'm going to take Eliza to the hospital, are you good to clear up here?"
Jefferson nodded, "I'll take care of everything."
Washington used his grip on Eliza's arm to lead her out of the room and after Alex.
