Chapter 1: A New Home
Clear sunny skies were present one particular Wednesday afternoon in Zootopia. The sidewalks swarmed with pedestrians as usual; varying from giant elephants to cheetahs – all the way to meerkats and gerbils. Regardless of size or species, the city was a place many mammals called home. Unfortunately for some however, this also meant difficulty with traveling due to traffic in certain areas – sometimes backed up to even a mile.
One highway leading into Savannah Central was at a slow crawl due to the amount of vehicles entering and leaving the city. Frustrated drivers began honking their horns and shouting eagerly ready to get to their destination. Some were getting off work while others were heading in. It was quite literally a jungle at this point.
Amongst the sea of vehicles was a black sedan with a right blinker light on attempting to switch lanes. Unfortunately for the passengers, it wasn't looking like anyone was going to let them over anytime soon.
Behind the tinted glass of the vehicle was two mammals – the driver being an ocelot in a purple tee shirt with black leggings. She had dark gray fur with icy blue eyes which were concealed behind a pair of aviator sunglasses. The other mammal – a lykoi ( 'lie-coy' half cat, half wolf) wore an olive green crop top with grey shorts. Although she resembled the other mammal with her blue eyes, there were distinctive traits to her darker fur and facial features that stood out – being that she was a hybrid. She leaned back in her seat scrolling through a playlist on her phone blocking out the world around her. After a minute and a half of no movement forward however, she peered outside briefly. Her attention then shifted to the ocelot in the drivers seat.
"Didn't you say exit 33?" she questioned curiously now removing her left airpod.
"Yes" the mammal in the driver seat replied observing the vehicle to their right.
The lykoi leaned forward peering at one particular sign on the highway. " Well...pretty sure we have a quarter of a mile to make it over 3 lanes" she sighed under her breath.
"I'm aware of that Trinity" Silvia sighed still monitoring the large vehicle beside them. "If this stupid semi would just let me over..."
While Silvia was confident in her driving, being on the highways of the city gave her a bit of anxiety. Back home on the island, traffic was practically nonexistent. Any destination would take no longer than 10 minutes to reach by car there. It was quite the culture shock returning to Zootopia after all of this time.
Trinity now growing impatient began looking for any opportunity to proceed. Traffic was moving now but not fast enough for the young teen. They had been stuck in the car for almost 3 hours at this point.
"I think there's an opening coming up" she spoke up with a bit of excitement pointing a claw at a red SUV. "They look like they're about to exit."
"Likely it will close before we get the chance" Silvia replied dismissively. "This is just great, I told them we'd make it there by 3 but at this rate we'll be lucky to make it before sundown."
Moments later the opening Trinity pointed out indeed disappeared. Taking the place of the red SUV was a white convertible. The young mammal folded her arms now annoyed. Had her mother taken the chance they would've been 2 lanes over by now.
"Jeeze mom, if you drove like this back when you were a cop I doubt even a sloth was worried" she groaned resting her chin on her paw. "Shame you couldn't just put some sirens on and zoom us ou-"
"Shush" Silvia snipped now leaning forward to concentrate. Her grip on the steering wheel tightened. The exit was now in view. If they missed it likely it would add another 30 minutes to their trip. Another opening would need to appear in the next 20 seconds.
Trinity yawned. "Shall I catch a zoober and just meet you there?" she chuckled teasing her mother.
"Quiet."
Suddenly an opening began forming in the next lane over. It was now or never. Silvia hit the gas jerking the steering wheel hard to the right. The car zoomed into the next lane causing a vehicle behind them to honk. Trinity laughed catching a glimpse of the furious tiger behind them in the rear view mirror.
"I think you upset someone.."
"Come on..." Silvia muttered anxiously studying for one final opening. A white truck was all that was blocking them now. Exit 33 was within feet at this point. Trinity reached forward pressing a button by the door handle. Slowly her window began to descend. She began waving her paw at the driver of the white truck beside them in attempt to get his attention.
"What are you doing?" the mother questioned now removing her aviators. "Stop causing a scene."
The driver of the vehicle – an older looking wolf - noticed the young mammal waving after about 10 seconds. Trinity pointed her claw at the exit sign and then made a pleading look. Confused as first, the driver smiled as he understood the situation. Tipping his hat, the truck halted giving them an opening.
Wasting no time, Silvia accelerated into the exit lane breathing a sigh of relief.
The young teen gazed over at her mom with a smug look. Silvia could feel her eyes piercing into the side of her face.
"See how I handled that?" Trinity raised her paw up in hopes of getting a high five. "Up high."
"You are something else child" the ocelot mumbled not taking her eyes of the road. She glanced over seeing her daughter still holding her paw up. Reluctantly she gave in to the high five.
"Just wait until I start driving." Trinity replied eagerly. She turned her attention back to the tall buildings passing outside. The sight of the big city with all of the different walks of life had her in aw. The island they came from didn't have much scenery outside of the ocean.
"It's crazy when you were younger you reminded me of Judy but now; you seem more like Nick" Silvia murmured. The car soon took a turn into a suburban neighborhood. "Also I don't want to hear about you talking back or giving them any sass. I told Judy you'd gladly help out with chores of any kind."
Ignoring her mothers lecture, Trinity gazed at all of the large homes that replaced the buildings they were passing. Never in her life had she seen so many nice houses.
"Sheesh they must be rich" the teen commented. "Also uncle Nick is a fox right?"
"Yes. Haven't I told you this before?"
"Well, I mean if he's my uncle...obviously he must have some connection with my dad right..?" Trinity continued cautiously. Everytime she brought up anything to do with her father her mom would shut it down.
But she was 14 now about to start her first year of highschool. Surely she was old enough to know a bit more about him right?
"Not now Trin" her mother dismissed slowing the car down at a smaller house at the end of the street. "Not the time." She proceeded to turn the car off.
"Yeah it's never the time. Silly me" the young mammal hissed under her breath. "Whatever."
"What was that?"
"Nothing" she muttered opening the door. The teen stepped out making her way to the trunk to get her luggage. Following a popping sound, the trunk slowly ascended revealing 2 large suit cases. She reached for one heaving it with both paws.
'What all did I pack again?' she thought setting the heavy object on the ground. Her mother appeared a moment later.
"Here let me help you" Silvia suggested reaching for the 2nd suitcase.
"Thanks" Trinity replied pulling her suitcase on to the sidewalk. She stopped momentarily examining the house in front of her. It was somewhat smaller compared to the surrounding neighbors. The driveway was occupied with a silver jeep parked just outside the garage. The lawn appeared to be freshly cut with a nice walkway leading to the front porch. A small garden containing vegetables was present off to the side of the house with a white fence.
"A bit different from our home huh?" Silvia chimed setting the suitcase on the side walk. "Looks cozy."
"Yeah. Big change" Trinity murmured unenthusiastic. The young mammal was unsure how she felt about this big move going to live with mammals she'd barely known. Aside from listening in on a few phone conversation and saying hello, she never met Judy in person. She sounded friendly enough, but still.
"Well let's not keep them waiting" Silvia spoke up now making her way towards the walk way. Trinity reluctantly followed closely behind her. Upon arriving to the front door, Silvia rang the doorbell. Both mammals anxiously waiting an answer glanced at one another. After a moment later a voice was heard on the other side.
"Who is it?" A male voice asked.
"Silvia and Trinity" the ocelot announced. The voice didn't sound like Nick. Perhaps they had the wrong address. She looked over checking the house number. Suddenly the door opened revealing a young red fox. Trinity raised an eyebrow in confusion studying him. Silvia on the other paw smiled.
"You must be Jacob" Silvia greeted. "Hello."
The fox gazed at Silvia and then at Trinity. A somewhat nervous smile grew on his face.
"Sup" he spoke finally. He quickly turned around. "Mom they made it!" He shouted.
"Coming!" a female voice called back.
Silvia grew tense in that moment. She hadn't seen Judy in such a long time. Jacob turned around facing the mammals standing in front of him. His gaze shifted towards the two large suitcases behind them.
"Excuse me ladies" he said walking past them. He picked up both suitcases now heaving them inside. "These aren't as heavy as they look."
"What a gentelman" Silvia commented following the fox inside. Trinity however wasn't impressed.
'More like suck up' she thought slowly entering the house after her mom.
The three mammals made it to the living room area. Jacob sat the suitcases by the couch letting out a short breath. He then turned around facing the two guests.
"There ya go ladies" he spoke with a wide grin. "I'm Jacob but my friends call me Jake" he reached a paw out to Silvia.
"It's very nice to meet you Jake" Silvia smiled shaking his paw. "This is my daughter Trinity. I assume your mom told you about her staying with you guys for the school year?"
"Yup" he answered now extending his paw towards the teen. "Trinity? So do your friends call you Trin?" The fox snickered playfully.
"Nope. Just Trinity dude" the lykoi muttered coldly rolling her eyes. 'Weirdo'
Silvia gave her daughter a death glare. "Be nice" she whispered nudging her. The young fox wasn't phased however.
"Alrighty Trin it is" he said confidently making his way past them towards the kitchen. "I think mom should be down any minute so you ladies make yourself at home."
The lykoi glared at the fox and then up at her mother. "I'm going to kill him" Trinity whispered.
"He's just teasing you honey" Silvia quietly assured with a smile. "You're just not used to having a sibling around to do that sort of thing. Besides I call you Trin all of the time.."
"Big difference. Not even close to the same thi-"
Before Trinity could get another word out a small gray bunny came down the stairs. Upon hitting the last step her face lit up with joy at the sight of the two mammals. For a moment she was lost for words.
"SILVIA!" Judy cried running up to embrace the cat.
"Judy!" Silvia gasped returning the hug. "It's so good to finally see you again."
Trinity stood there feeling out of place. She heard about this bunny but hadn't ever met her. This was the one her mom spoke about in the days of being on the police force. Once the hug ended Judy turned her attention to the teen.
"Hello" Judy greeted full of warmth. The bunny had a genuine kindness to her that was un deniable.
"Hi" Trinity answered nervously. "I'm assuming you're aunt Judy?"
The bunny blushed in that moment. She glanced over at her old partner. She wasn't aware of being referred to as an aunt but it didn't bother her.
"That's me" Judy replied cheerfully. "Nice to finally meet you Trinity." Judy went in for a hug unsure of what to expect. Trinity hesitantly hugged her back – mainly because her mother was right there. She wasn't much of a physical touch mammal especially with strangers. Despite the bunny being her aunt, she still didn't know her. The hug lasted roughly 2 seconds.
Silvia began examining pictures on the wall of the living room. One that caught her eye was of Judy and Nick with their son Jacob at a football game. She smirked thinking back on how much her and Nick both despised each other at one point. Thankfully they had squashed everything the last time they saw each other..right?
"So where is the fox these days?" Silvia asked curiously.
"He's upstairs taking a nap" Judy answered taking a seat on the couch. "He's been sick the past few days so now he's a big baby" she giggled.
Trinity became very anxious in that moment. Nick Wilde or 'uncle' Nick. He would surely have much needed answers about her father considering her mother did briefly mention they were brothers. But he's a fox and her dad was a wolf? And his wife is a bunny. Who knows. Regardless she needed to talk to him.
Jacob appeared in the doorway of the kitchen with his paws full of snacks. "Yeah dad has been in a mood lately" he added now making his way upstairs. "Nice to meet you two." The fox disappeared upstairs heading to his room.
Judy and Silvia continued catching up while Trinity was mostly quiet. The two began talking about their time on the police force while leaving out specific details partaining to a certain criminal. Judy than showed them around the house and the garden area. It really was quite the cozy place indeed. Even though Trinity wasn't used to any of this it did have a home feel to it. After about 30 minutes the three mammals found their way back to the living room.
"Well I probably best get going" Silvia spoke softly. "Tell Nick I said hello. I'm sorry I wish I could stay longer but I have a long drive back home."
A frown grew on the bunnies face. "Aw Silvia you should atleast rest before getting back on the road" Judy insisted.
Trinity was quiet. She looked away from her mother towards the floor.
"Trust me the longer I put it off the worse the drive will be" the cat chuckled. She gave her old friend another hug. She then looked over at her daughter who was avoiding eye contact. "Ehem...Can I get a hug please?"
Trinity shifted slightly clearing her throat. "Um, can I talk to you outside for a minute?"
Silvia nodded. The two made their way towards the front door.
"I'll go ahead and bring your luggage to your room Trinity." Judy called out. "You two take your time."
"Oh no you don't have to" Trinity replied quickly turning around. She wasn't used to this sort of hospitality. Honestly the whole thing made her a bit uncomfortable.
"I insist. Go on now" Judy assured pulling on the large suitcases. "Whenever you come back in I'll show you your room."
Trinity hesitantly continued outside after Silvia. As soon as the door shut behind them she scolded her mom.
"So that's the plan huh? Just leave me here with these mammals I've never met?" Trinity whispered aggravated.
"We've been planning this for a year now.." Silvia spoke in surprise. "They are good mammals Trin. I mean they obviously raised their son with manners."
"Are you kidding me? He's a freaking suck up that's going to drive me nuts!" Trinity stomped her foot folding her arms. "Why can't I just go to high school back home?"
"That school barely has 200 kids. Out here you'll have way more diversity. No more bullying about what your bloodline is" the mother assured trying to calm her daughter. "You don't think this is difficult for me too?"
"Uh huh..." Trinity muttered looking down at the ground. "Leaving me like dad eh..I see how it is" she nervously laughed. Although she was trying to play it off as a joke a wave of guilt hit as those words left her mouth.
The mothers eyes widened in shock. "That..was uncalled for..seriously." Silvia stood staring at her for a moment in disbelief.
"It was just a joke" Trinity sighed looking off to the side avoiding her mothers gaze. After a moment of silence lingered she took a deep breath. "Fine...bad joke...sorry."
Silvia stared her daughter for a moment longer before slowly approaching her. "You're the only thing keeping me together in this world..I just..want you to have the best you know?"
"I know.." the teen mumbled looking down in shame. "I'm sorry.."
Silvia embraced her daughter in shortly after.
Trinity while not meaning to hurt her mothers feelings harbored a resentment towards her for always avoiding questions about her father all of her life. The mammal may as well have been a ghost. Not one single picture of him or anything. Pushing these thoughts out of her head she continued holding on to her mom.
"Look just give it a chance for 1 year" Silvia spoke calmly. "Can you do that for me? If you absolutely hate it I'll bring you back home asap."
"What if..I don't make it a whole year?" Trinity slightly laughed forcefully in attempt to lighten the mood. "What if I want you to come pick me up tomorrow?"
Silvia placed her paws on her daughters' shoulders. "Then I best get home so I can be well rested for another long...tedious drive tomorrow" she smiled. "You'll do fine Trinity. Remember you can always call me if you need anything..or just want to talk."
The two mammals hugged again this time for longer.
"Love you mom" the teen muttered closing her eyes. Trinity wasn't one to show emotion as she felt it made her vulnerable, but her mother was truly the only mammal who understood her despite their relationship being hot and cold. She was her best friend. Not having her around wouldn't be a welcome change at all.
"I love you more" Silvia replied softly. "You're the best thing that's ever happened to me."
The young mammal whipped her eyes. "You better text me when you get home or I'm taking the next train there."
"I will, but you better be asleep by then since you have registration for school early in the morning" Silvia replied releasing her daughter. "Can't believe you're already starting high school."
"Ugh..thanks for that reminder" Trinity groaned now taking a step back towards the door. "Drive safe."
The mother began making her way to the parked car.
Silvia turned back with a smile. "I always do" she replied opening the car door.
Trinity watched her mom pull of down the road eventually disappearing behind a corner down the block. It felt surreal thinking that she would be waking up in a new house tomorrow morning. A part of her was nervous but also somewhat anxious.
She then turned facing the door.
"Welcome to Zootopia Trinity.." she mumbled to herself placing a paw on the handle.

And still...most of you new readers are probably asking who this girl is. I know some of you may not be a fan of her yet with how she acted towards Jacob and her mom. But give her time. Flawed characters are usually the most intriguing. A lot of things are to come, and for those who have read the first story welcome back. For those new eyes out there, welcome. Hope you guys like this journey we're about to go on. See you all in Chapter 2.
