This is a crossover story I have put on hiatus for a long time. I'm a little nervous to start it now as it is an origin story about my original character. I incorporated many series into this fan work, so see if you can identify them.
All characters and content of this work belongs to their respective owners, I own nothing other than my Original Character and the plot of this story.
I have heard a legend of two swords since I was a little girl. My adoptive mother told me the story numerous times, and it stuck to me for years, well into my early adulthood.
The story goes that an undead pirate acquired one of these swords many centuries ago and used it to slaughter numerous innocent people over a short period of time; this event triggered what became the first incident of what would be known as an "Evil Seed". He nearly succeeded, but thankfully was put to an end by a holy warrior and a ninja, who destroyed one of the two halves of the sword, killed the pirate, and averted the first "Evil Seed". The world thought this near- apocalyptic event would never happen again.
But they were wrong…
Years later, a second "Evil Seed" was triggered when a young knight found the surviving half of the sword and was possessed shortly after he began wielding the blade; this transformed him into a dark, misanthropic entity known by some as "the Azure Knight" or infamously "the Nightmare".
Like his predecessor before him, he also sought out mass murder of innocent victims to steal their souls and obtain limitless god-like powers, and he did so with the help of some henchmen: a golem, a lizard man, and an alchemist. They were fortunately ended when two fighters, one a shaolin monk, and another, a member of the Chinese Imperial guard, put a stop to his plans, using the second, more revered of the two legendary swords to slay the evil knight after he transformed into his true form. Afterwards, they trapped the two swords into another dimension in the hopes that the good sword would prevent its evil counterpart from escaping back to the real world, preventing the second "Evil Seed".
But that was short-lived too…
The evil sword (as well as its good counterpart) escaped its astral prison, and managed to return to Earth, this time manifesting again as a more powerful, and more ruthless version of this "Nightmare", triggering the third "Evil Seed". The knight that had been the unwilling host of the sword had since freed himself from its manipulation and decided to put an end to the evil entity and its sword for good…by destroying it.
The tragic knight gathered an army of supporters, and together they battled the "Nightmare's" army of possessed individuals. From what I heard the battle was very intense, and for a long time, the two leaders fought with no clear winner, that was until the two of them performed a finishing strike against each other simultaneously. For a moment, it wasn't clear who won, until suddenly the evil "Nightmare" dropped to the ground, dead from the knight's strike, whereas the knight himself was unharmed. He then proceeded to destroy the evil sword, saving billions of lives across the world in doing so.
I always got excited whenever my mother told me the story every time, as I would proceed to ask her afterwards if I might be like those heroes one day. My mother always chuckle, clearly flattered by my enthusiasm for being a good samaritan or a philanthropic hero, but she would always tell me that these stories were just legends past down overtime, leaving the historical accuracy of the events debatable at best and fantastical at worst…
But that would all change shortly after my 18th birthday…
A young lady was busy studying a window with a clear, night sky in front of her.
"Such an amazing view," she said aloud, "Very surreal yet fantastic at the same time."
The young woman had fair, slightly tanned skin and very long, blonde hair that reached just beyond her hips, which she kept down. She had bright green eyes, and wore emerald green eyeshadow and pink lipstick. She had a slender figure, and her outfit consisted of a green, spaghetti-strap dress with a white skirt reaching all the way down to the floor, and a pair of emerald green high-heeled sandals.
She was trying to finish a painting for her final project for her high school art assignment. She had completed the class so far with flying colors and was on track to completing her senior year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
"Just a little more to go…and…there! Perfect," she said confidently. "Now to just turn this in tomorrow morning."
The woman went to bed that night, believing that tomorrow would bring a promising day ahead.
The next morning, the woman walked to her class with her painting in hand, covered in a tarp, which she planned on uncovering when it was her turn to present her work in class. Upon entering, she took her seat as class was about to begin.
"You all won't believe the painting I made," one student said aloud.
"I can't wait to show mine," another piped up.
"I just wished I spent more time on mine," a less than pleased student pouted, "I just hope the teacher gives me a decent grade."
"What about you Calla?" one girl asked, "How do you feel about your project?"
The young woman looked at her classmate.
"I spent much of last night perfecting the final touches on the work." Calla said somewhat nervously, "I admit I did procrastinate, but hopefully all that hard work would be worth it in the end."
"I'm sure you'll be fine," her friend assured her, "I bet it will be wonderful."
Calla smiled at her friend, just as the bell rang and class began.
As the class progressed and soon enough it was Calla's turn to present her final project. She walked up to the front of the classroom with her project in toll.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I present you my masterpiece."
Calla then removed the cover from her canvas. After a moment of studying the work, everyone including the art teacher gasped in astonishment.
"Wow Calla, your work is amazing!" her teacher commended her.
"Thanks Mrs. McKinnon" she replied, "I call this work "Cosmic Dream.""
The class applauded, before Mrs. McKinnon began motioned her to continue.
"The I combined aspects of the Surrealism movement from the first half of the 20th century with elements of the Fantasy and Science Fiction Genres that I took from some popular works," Calla explained to her class, "I added some unique references to pop culture such as the planet Saturn and its beautiful rings, a UFO that I created based on descriptions of eyewitnesses from the Hudson Valley Incident back in the 1980s, and a space station that I created to resemble elements of the Cosmic Observatory from one of my favorite video games: Super Mario Galaxy."
"Wow, you really did your studying," Mrs. McKinnon told Calla, before the class erupted in another round of applause. Calla blushed from all the attention she was getting. "I can certainly say you succeeded in this assignment."
Calla smiled at her teacher, whom she considered a close friend of hers for her entire high school experience, before returning to her seat.
The rest of the class continued with more students giving presentations, some good and some bad, but before she knew it, Calla's final day of Art Class ended. As she was leaving, her teacher motioned her to her desk.
"Calla, normally I'm not supposed to tell this to my students ahead of time, but your painting was by far the best in the class. If you would like, would you mind if I display this on the glass gallery outside in the hallway?"
Calla's face lit up, "I would love that, thanks Mrs. McKinnon."
Mrs. McKinnon returned with a smile, "You know Calla, you always seem to impress me all these years, someday I believe you will be a great person who will change the world."
Calla's eyes began to tear up, "I'm really going to miss you Mrs. McKinnon, I'll never forget you."
Calla shared a hug with her teacher before she left the classroom. As she was walking to her next class, she noticed a large group of students were gathered in front of a television screen in the large atrium at the front of the school. Her face turn from one of satisfaction to one of concern. She walked up to the group and was wondering what everyone was so preoccupied watching. When she read the headline in the banner, her heart suddenly stopped.
"Breaking News: Mass killer loose in Emerald Valley"
She and the students surrounding her couldn't believe it, that was the same city she and her school was in.
"The unknown suspect has already taken the lives of countless civilians and law enforcement, and national guard and has brought about an unstoppable path of destruction along his path," a reporter atop a helicopter was broadcasting, "Preliminary reports suggest that the suspect is wearing some sort of dark blue-violet colored suit of armor and is carrying some sort of large red sword."
Suddenly one of the students recognized the location where the incident was unfolding.
"Wait a minute, that looks like the area just outside the sch-"
Suddenly, a large explosion sounded from the main entrance of the school, causing the group of students including Calla, to fall because of the aftershock. The wall then crumbled, and a cloud of dust formed, silhouetting the atrium. As Calla got back up to her feet, she suddenly heard several of the surrounding students screaming in terror, as the sounds of the school's fire alarms sounded simultaneously. She then heard close combat near her as several student's voices going silent, begging an unknown perpetrator for mercy, she became scared, as the school had literally become a warzone in a mere seconds. One person's safety suddenly came to her mind: Mrs. McKinnon.
Calla tried to make her way to the art class by memory, trying her best to navigate the cloud of dust. After seemingly fighting her way through fleeing students, she found herself in front of a recognizable door, it was Mrs. McKinnon's classroom. Calla tried to open the door, but she found it be obstructed by something heavy on the other side, she push harder, as the door finally gave way as she entered the classroom.
"Mrs. McKinnon! It's Calla, can you hear me?" she called out, "We need to get out of here!"
After trying to such for her teacher for quite some time, Calla became worried, as she began fearing the worse. As she began to exit the room, she heard a sinister voice approaching in her direction.
"Aww, you're all suffering," the voice laughed evilly, "How it soothes me with power!"
Suddenly, a strange sinister figure appeared in front of the doorway, Calla became scared, knowing this individual standing before her was hostile.
"Hehehe, my blade sensed your presence," the figure remarked arrogantly, "The Nightmare will devour your soul, just like the rest of you pitiful humans!"
Suddenly, the figure rushed in her direction, attempting to kill her. Calla dived to the side, narrowly dodging an untimely demise. The figure then turned to her direction and tried to grab her, but Calla lunged in the direction of the doorway, but as she tried to regain her footing, the figure released a powerful shockwave, causing Calla to fall and making avalanche of rubble to fall in front of the doorway, blocking it entirely.
Calla was now trapped, she tried her best to shuffle back from the figure, but upon hitting the pile of rubble, she became scared, well-aware that she was doomed into becoming one of these villain's many victims.
"You shall make a fine sacrifice for Soul Edge!" the figure laughed evilly.
The figure then raised the sword into the air as it began to glow an eerie reddish hue. Calla closed her eyes, preparing to accept her fate, but suddenly, a bright white glow surrounded the room, blinding the villain standing in front of her.
"Leave her alone!" a calming female voice cried out.
"Gaah! You dare interrupt my sacrifice?" The evil figure said.
"Now's your chance my child! Make your way towards my voice." The unknown woman cried out.
Calla was unsure what was happening, but believing that this voice was an ally, she quickly got to her feet and ran in the direction that the voice. Was coming from.
The evil voice piped up once more,
"Don't think this is over, I'll make sure you die suffering like the rest of you humans the next chance we meet!" the evil voice ranted.
Calla suddenly heard the figure's voice distorting away from her, as she was unsure what happened.
After what felt like a few moments of silence, the light suddenly faded, causing her to go black.
Upon awakening, Calla found herself in an unfamiliar location. Upon studying her surroundings, she found herself in a futuristic environment, it look like she was on some sort of space station, but it was more open, in one direction, she could see what appeared to be the planet Earth looming large and bright in the near distance. All around the vicinity of the location were strange dancing stars, almost as though they were alive. Strangely, she felt a sense of safety and familiarity about this place like she had seen it before somewhere.
"Glad you made it here safely." A familiar voiced said behind her.
Calla turned around and her eyes lit up, standing right before her was her close friend and teacher Mrs. McKinnon.
"Mrs. McKinnon, is it really you?" Calla asked in astonishment.
Mrs. McKinnon chuckled, "It sure is, but Mrs. McKinnon isn't my real name."
"Wait, what do you mean?" Calla asked in confusion.
"I…" suddenly Mrs. McKinnon raised her arms out as a bright light surrounded her body, twinkling for a moment before another figure appeared in front of her, one that was all too familiar with Calla thanks to the video games she had played "am Rosalina, protector of the cosmos."
Calla gasped in confusion, "B-but I thought you were…um…fictional."
Mrs. McKinnon, or rather Rosalina giggled once more "It's a little secret I like to keep hidden."
"So, wait, if you're real, then does that mean- "
Suddenly, several of the dancing stars began to swarm around Calla in a playful manner; Calla realized that these weren't stars, but rather Lumas, Rosalina's adopted children.
"Indeed they are my child." Rosalina replied.
But just as Calla was amazed at how someone whom she knew as nothing more than fiction as in fact very real, a question still haunted her mind.
"So, wait who was that person that attack me at the school?"
Rosalina's smile then turned to a concerned frown.
"That my dear, was Nightmare, an evil entity that has wreaked havoc on your planet on and off for centuries. The weapon he was carrying is a powerful demonic sword called Soul Edge. With that sword, he plans on harvesting the souls of innocents in order to bring about a cataclysm on your world."
Calla gulped, relieved that she had narrowing escaped a grizzly fate.
"But what about the rest of the students, my friends, my mom and dad?" Calla questioned, fearing something bad had happened.
Rosalina gave a saddened look, "I'm afraid your parents and friends have all perished, it appears Nightmare and his henchmen had nearly wiped out the entire population of your hometown."
Calla's eyes began to water, trying to hold back tears "No…no no no, this can't be happening!"
Calla began to sob, as Rosalina held out her arms to comfort her with a sympathetic hug, "I know, I didn't want to break the bad news to you, but I can assure you Nightmare's heinous deeds will not go unpunished."
"But how can we stop him?" Calla questioned Rosalina, "We barely made it out alive, he's too powerful for me to face alone."
"Indeed my dear," Rosalina answered, before giving a small smile "But we aren't too late, you need to build an army to counter his goal of universal cataclysm."
Calla wiped away her tears, "Well, what are we waiting for, let's go find these people who can help us stop him."
"Hang on my child," Rosalina stopped her, "Before you can build an army, you need to prepare yourself for the many trials and hazards that await you on your journey to find them; to do that you will need the proper training in combat."
"But who will train me?" Calla asked.
"You're looking at them right now," Rosalina replied, referring to herself, "But before you begin, you will need to settle into this place, I'll show you around."
And with that, Rosalina motioned Calla to follow her around the Cosmic Observatory.
After a lengthy tour, Rosalina showed Calla to her own personal quarters that she had prepared for her. It resembled her bedroom back on Earth, complete with a working Television that ran on magic and her own desk and queen-sized bed.
"Wow, I'm impressed," Calla said, "It feels just like at home."
Rosalina chuckled, "Well, I'm glad you like it, the Lumas and I worked hard to replicate every detail to make you feel right at home."
"Thank you," Calla replied, "It means a lot after what I've just been through."
Rosalina giggled softly, "Well make yourself at home, because first thing tomorrow morning after breakfast, we begin your training."
Calla nodded, as Rosalina left her room, leaving her alone as she adjusted to her new home.
The next morning, after breakfast, Rosalina took Calla took an open courtyard. There she stopped in the middle of the field and turned towards her.
"Today, I'm going to introduce you to the basic principles of battle," she explained to her disciple, "But before we begin, I must ask you something important: are you ready?"
Calla gulped, a little nervous knowing about putting her life at risk by becoming a warrior, but nonetheless willing to stop a universal cataclysm.
"I'm ready."
"Good, now first, you must choose what weapon you wish to use in combat," Rosalina explained.
"I always admired knights with those large two-handed greatswords," Calla answered, "I always wished to learn how to practice fighting using one of those powerful weapons."
"Then a greatsword shall be the weapon you will be trained with during our tutorials."
Rosalina then pulled out a star-shaped wand and twirled it around, suddenly, a greatsword nearly the same height as Calla appeared floating in front of her. Rosalina motioned Calla to reach out and take the sword, which she obliged.
"Now let's begin…"
