Chapter 12: Demonized

Rewritten

Under the sun's warm embrace, roses flourished in the royal gardens, their petals aglow with vibrant colors. Lilypads delicately floated atop a serene pond, tended to by diligent servants. Amid this picturesque scene, two carefree children played and sang, their laughter echoing through the garden. Observing this, one couldn't help but be captivated by the innocence and joy that permeated the air.

It was a day etched into his memory, a day of peace he wished would last forever. Despite knowing it wouldn't last forever, he embraced the moment, savoring every precious second.

"Renner, Zanac!" He called out to the two, making them cease playing catch and walk towards their father. "Come here, you two. Here, take something to eat. You need it." He handed each child a branch laden with succulent berries, carefully cultivated in the royal gardens. The youngsters savored the sweetness, as their faces glew up when eating them.

"Thank you, father." Expressed young Zanac, his mouth filled with berries. Renner ate the berries slowly while watching the wind carry through the roses.

"Your welcome, Zanac." He replied with a warm smile, appreciating his son's polite manners.

He watched until they finished eating, and then they left to play whatever the kids played.

"Father, come play too!" Urged Zanac. "We can play catch, but you'll have to catch us!" A challenge worthy for a king indeed. He stood up from his chair and decided to play their little game.

"Alright, but don't complain if I catch you too quickly." He prepared to catch them, gradually pacing up to their speed. They weren't fast, but he tried to be as fair as possible, not speeding up his tempo to let them escape.

"Come on, father!"

"Can't get us!"

He only smiled at their remarks, bracing himself to catch Zanac first and then Renner, but something felt off. The distance between the two didn't decrease; it even increased. He tried to run as fast as possible, but it changed little. The picture of his children distorted even more until there was nothing but a void before him, the voices of his kids only but an echo.

Yet it was not long dark as he heard a door open, light peeking through to his room. He saw a maid coming in. Seeing him awake, she rushed to him with haste.

"Your Majesty! Are you alright? Are you feeling any better?" She asked, genuinely worried about his well-being. Probably the only maid in the palace who did so with heart.

"Better? Yes, better than before..." He reassured her, his thoughts lingering on the dreamlike experience he had just encountered. Satisfied with his response, the maid retreated, leaving him to ponder the strange reverie.

She walked with a hustle to the next room, where the king's two children patiently waited for his awakening. Zanac glanced out of the window up to the sky, seeking eternal knowledge in the stars. His sister, Princess Renner, sat on a king blue-colored settee, sipping tea.

"Renner, what do you think will happen now? This Ainz sure made quite the introduction." He broke the silence, his sister still drinking the cup clear, waiting for a good moment to respond.

"He seems quite formidable. But why not do as he asks, brother?" She suggested what every person would think the best choice to be. Accept or die. There was no middle ground, no escape, no counteroffer.

Instead of laughing at her proposition to practically give up to one man, he made a thoughtful gesture, considering what would happen if they acted that way. "You could be right. But that move will weaken the royal family even further as if we aren't almost thrown from power right now. The nobles could act at every moment now that we no longer have a strong family member anymore, at least in their eyes. For them, this is but an opportunity as they fail to see the importance of this situation."

"Yet who cares what the nobles think? Until the royal family dies out, we still have the last word. Seeing what a single mage could do to the capital, even they would know to wait until this is all settled." Renner wisely remarked, revealing a shrewd understanding beyond her years.

"I suppose there are two kinds of nobles in this world. Let's see which one will act first, then. But they still follow one goal: power. And I wouldn't be that open about your standing in this, as many would see it as treachery. Keep that in mind." He knew everything could be used against them, so they always had to act extra careful.

"Always, brother. I can assure you not even you know my true intentions." Renner cryptically replied, prompting a raised brow from Zanac.

"Oh, really? And what about your little shiny knight?" The only reaction he could get out of her sister this time was her putting her cup on the table. "Father will not be king for long anymore. Even the lowest peasants know that. That said, if you support my claim to the throne as a fellow royal, I will give you a peaceful plot of land where you will be undisturbed. And yes, you will be able to marry your precious knight and live with him until your death."

He awaited her response, only to see her laugh, still in a civilized matter fit for a princess. "If you manage to do that, I will give you all the support you need, brother." She looked him in the eyes, her lie well hidden by her perfect act. Zanac didn't know Renner was already bought, and such a promise had already been made to her. She would choose the latter if she had to choose her brother or a mysterious mage with powers from legends. Her brother could only smile hearing this, even if his sister didn't mean it.

"So be it." He conceded just as the doors swung open, revealing their father accompanied by Gazef Stronoff, who carefully led the king to his chair. Who would have thought the Warrior Captain to do such a thing instead of opening bandits from their heads down to their torsos.

Both made their required pose, Renner standing up from the divan and Zanac getting away from the window and near a seat. They waited until their father sat down, following his gesture.

"Father, do you feel any better now?" Zanac inquired with a mix of curiosity and concern. He wasn't the kind of man to desire his father's death to become king. He wasn't that wicked. Yet he thought his brother surely wished that way.

"I am indeed. Thank you for asking Zanac. Those teas really helped me get on my feet." Acknowledged the king, shifting the conversation to weightier matters. "But my well-being is of lesser importance than the matter at hand." The atmosphere grew darker as he pulled himself and the two back into reality. "I don't believe I can reign as king any longer. I have neither the strength nor the ability to act any further in this scenario." While not surprised, both Zanac and Renner feigned a semblance of concern for their father's sake.

"I understand you, father. Believe me, I will do everything within my power as the king to keep the kingdom balanced. That I promise to you and our people." His father looks at him, chuckling at his son's response and willingness to bear the burden.

"Zanac, do you believe to be ready now that your brother…disappeared." His heart still fringed at his oldest son, caring for him even if he didn't care for his father.

"Father, I was ready to carry out this duty from the moment I was born, even if I was not the first heir. Maybe I am unprepared and lack the knowledge to act in such a situation, but I will always put the kingdom first. A king does not choose to be ready. He accepts the duty will all that he has instead, leading his people to the best possible outcome." Zanac proclaimed, impressing his father with his resolute stance.

"Zanac, you know, Barbro was deluded, thinking that becoming king would grant him power and might. But you seem to understand that being a king is a give and take, and if you give peace and prosperity to your people, you will receive all the glory you need. With that said, I will abdicate soon and crown you as the next king, knowing well you will lead the kingdom out of its misery. I trust in you, Zanac. And so does the kingdom from now on." The second Prince felt a weight on his shoulder like never before, his father's words accountable for it.

"Thank you, father. I will not fail you." Zanac vowed, bowing respectfully as his father's words lingered in the air.

"Still, everything feels like a dream. That evening, I-I looked outside, and it was hell itself." The king confessed, hands trembling at the memories that haunted him. Even the image of his decapitated son lingered vividly. "Knowing that one man could bring such horror, what else might be in this world?"

"Believe me, father. What happened was nothing but true, straight out of a nightmare if I were to be honest." Renner consoled, her composure unwavering. Even if she didn't care, she had to act like it. "The people are in grave despair, now more than ever."

"I really didn't wish for this to happen. I just did it to shut those nobles up!" He hit the side of his chair with his fist, straining his hand angrily. Gazef almost wanted to interfere but decided against it. "If I knew Ainz Ooal Gown was this powerful, I would never have provoked him, never! He already showed who's in power by bringing those...those creatures here. But he still gave us time." The event was a show of power to make the kingdom see how effortlessly he could put disorder into the hearts of every citizen. He looked to his right, relieved to see Gazef there.

Yet the warrior seemed to clash with himself, guilt overcoming his whole being. "Gazef, what do you think would have happened if I accepted the request of Ainz Ooal Gown?" The king questioned, seeking the insight of his trusted confidant, who looked surprised.

"I… I believe the nobles would've rebelled against your decision, seeing it as a great sign of weakness, given that Your Majesty would give a mighty title to a person no one knows about. But, knowing what happened yesterday, with that move, everything to this point could've been stopped." It was hard for him, first bringing news about a rescuing mage he met in Carne, to now, where the same man acted against the kingdom. "My king, please forgive me for thinking Ainz Ooal Gown to be an honest man, a man who protects the weak and cares for them! But he probably only did so for his entertainment. Seeing how he acted now, I believe that to be a fact. Even if I want to think otherwise. He appeared honest. But I shouldn't have trusted him." Gazef admitted, his sense of guilt discernible.

The king sighed at Gazef's response, knowing that the Warrior Captain did nothing wrong.

"Well, Gazef. This, Ainz, seems more like fate. I had been trying to satisfy the nobles for ages, which now led to my downfall. What a pity. I should have acted against them when I was still young, yet I let them drive me into old age faster than usual." Gazef knew this to be true, but he tried not to advise the king to go against them, acting only when he ordered. "Still, the display was like out of a storybook. The heavens opened, almost like they wanted to punish us for our sins."

"Father, you shouldn't worry any longer." Zanac reassured, recognizing his father's struggle with his own guilt. "And Renner, why don't you call Blue Rose to help the people in need? The streets are by now surely a feast for criminals."

"Already done, brother. It was the first thing I did when I saw what happened." Renner informed, earning a nod of approval from Zanac. Her quick and decisive actions spoke volumes about her intellect, leaving him impressed with the astuteness of his sister.

"Good, now then, let us continue with a walk in the gardens, shall we?"

Thieves fled in haste, pursued by an imposing figure clad in armor and the renowned female-only adventure team of Re-Estize. Some attempted to resist the adventurers but succumbed to their blades in a single stroke. They thought this to be the perfect time to rob, murder, and plunder whatever they could find. Yet never would they have thought to encounter these powerful adventurers on the streets.

After dispatching the last bandit, the group surveyed the area for any lingering threats.

"That was the last bandit." Lakyus reassured.

"So, are we still gonna fight 8 Fingers after this? Because we got our hands quite full with all the pillaging here, boss." Gagaran asked wisely, even though she knew they couldn't be at two places simultaneously. "We probably even have to fight one or two of those monsters."

"I agree. But that's all we can do for now." Evileye answered Gagaran, who lightly punched the undercover vampire.

"Ouch!" Gagaran chuckled at the response, and Evileye, stepping away, nearly collided with Momon emerging from a dark alley.

"They're all dead on my side. But the city doesn't seem to calm down, and thieves won't stop appearing. So what now?" Momon asked, his blades still stained with the blood of the vanquished thieves.

"Your right. But doing this all over again is the best way we can help. Can't do anything else really until everything is back in control." Lakyus acknowledged, uncertain about what the future held. Momon nodded in agreement.

"Back when it happened. These undead, I had heard of them but didn't really see one in person. But they are quite powerful, and in such numbers, they could account for the destruction of an entire city." Evileye told with worry, Lakyus and the bunch not bearing to listen to her speech.

"This Ainz Ooal Gown is probably a master necromancer or has some sort of artifact that allows him to control these abominations. Still, we know so little about him..." Lakyus didn't like it at all. Knowing your enemy was the first step in combat. But here, she didn't even know what Ainz looked like.

"We know that he's no ordinary mage, and he is no fool. This was a coordinated attack, not one out of pure malice. He could easily throw these undead at the kingdom's people, but he gave an ultimatum instead. Thinking that a group like Zurrernorn would just murder everyone with these monsters, I don't believe him to be a part of it, but the possibility still exists." Evileye speculated, oblivious that Ainz himself was present, listening to their thoughts.

'Well, Demiurge did over-exaggerate a little.' Ainz could only think of how Demiurge could have done it without doing such a scene, but if he did it, it was probably a smart move, or he decided to change it because of some new variable.

"A man with such evil intentions shouldn't have that kind of power. It is almost too frightening knowing what he could do to the world." To hear these words personally didn't quite bother Ainz. He knew they would act that way. And this day would be known as The Day of the Flying Dead, never to be forgotten by the generations to come.

"Well, whatever happens, we will find ourselves as the winners. Am I right, girls? And, respectfully, Dark Hero." Gagaran threw into the conservations, trying to slightly lift the mood, but her unrealistic response didn't help.

"Nice for you to have such a positive mind, Gagaran. But we need to be careful from now on, especially if it has to do something with Ainz Ooal Gown." Evileye cautioned, grounding Gagaran's flight of optimism.

"Anyway, I believe we have done enough for the day. I need to report to the Princess, so I can't stay until the evening with you guys." Lakyus declared, sheathing her sword.

"Well, good luck there!" Evileye bid farewell. Momon nodded, and Lakyus returned the gestures before heading towards the palace.

"Well, this made me really hungry, and now I need some CHICKEN!" Gagaran announced, strolling away toward an inn with the two ninja twins following her.

"I'll follow up soon!" Evileye called after the trio, Gagaran waving from behind her head.

Now only Momon and Evileye remained in the alley. The defeated bandits still lay on the ground, either unconscious or lifeless.

"Then I shall return to my inn as well, for the time being," Momon told Evileye, who was pondering her response.

"Sure. Care if I follow you for a bit, please?" She asked, almost pleading with the Dark Knight for it.

"Ehm, if that is what you want. You may do so. I don't mind a little company." Ainz didn't care, really. He just had to go to the inn and into his room.

They walked the streets soundless, with no word said. Evileye tried to think of something to ask Momon, but she didn't want to appear weird.

"So, Momon, from where did you come to the kingdom?" Evileye asked finally, the warrior only turning his visor to her.

"Do you really want to know?" Momon inquired, seizing the opportunity to remember the tale he had made about his past.

"YES! I mean, sure." She corrected herself. Ainz chose to ignore the slip.

"Very well, I'll tell you. I come from a land far, far away where monsters exist in masses, making life quite miserable. Compared to here, it was hell. I had to learn how to survive these harsh lands, and fortunately, I found friends who helped me get stronger. With them, I went on, what good times they were." He seemed to almost drift into his thoughts, forgetting that Evileye only asked a question, which led him to talk about his comrades instead. Evileye also couldn't think of how it was to live where safe havens were out of the question, and monsters were your everyday pig or cow.

"How were they?"

"Mmh?"

"How were your friends, I mean?"

Ainz chuckled a bit, his old self starting to show. "Do you really want to know?" He asked, genuinely wanting to tell someone else about his past friends. He enjoyed it, even if the pain of missing them was greater than anything he could feel.

"Why not?"

"Well then. My friends and I embarked on many adventures, countless, to be precise. We slew many beasts, and their companionship never tired me. We always held together, even when the odds were against us. They were the best friends a man could ask for. Yet that time has ended long ago." His presence suddenly changed, almost too depressing for a man like him. Whatever happened to his friends made him feel miserable, and Evileye began to notice it.

"You know, we had some good times as well, the members of Blue Rose and I. Wholesome, to be honest. But the world seems to change. I can feel it. The good bits seem to be over as everything goes downwards. For the better or worse, I don't really know." She tried to share her thoughts about what he said. She enjoyed the company of Blue Rose, yet knowing she would pass them in age always made her anxious.

"You are right. The world will change." Ainz said, clinging his fists with an uncontrolled rage that was soon put on hold by his suppressor. Why did he have to mention his friends if this topic only brought him grief, even if he couldn't feel it for long? Again, stillness overcame the two until Evileye dared to ask a question again.

"So, what are you going to do after this is all over? Maybe you can stay in the Capital for a little longer. We can go on some quests together, with Blue Rose of course." She asked the Dark Hero, he seemingly gazing into the horizon, still thinking about what he had said before.

"I would gladly do so. But I have duties in E-Rantel that require my presence. And I can't leave my companion alone, as she will surely wait for me there. But I thank you for the offer. Maybe another time." Ainz replied, Evileye punching the air behind him. She really wanted to keep Ainz in the Capital a little longer.

"I suppose you're right..." She said, getting quieter after each word.

They arrived at an inn after all that talk. It really sped up the process. Momon walked towards it, turning around just before he entered. "Goodbye, Evileye. See you tomorrow."

"Sure! Bye then!" She aggressively waved at the Dark Hero, he already having entered the building leaving her all alone outside. She only stood still momentarily until she kicked the ground out of fury.

"Why didn't you say something cool, Evileye?! You just let him leave! And why did I have to mention his friends? He clearly seems to be emotional about them!" She grunted, and seeing that she had gathered some attention to herself, she was quick to teleport to where Gagaran and the twins were.

Back to Momon, Ainz entered his room and closed the door behind him. He was swift to cast many anti-divination spells until he thought it to be safe. He opened up a gate and made his way through it. While walking into it, he simultaneously transformed into his divine robes, leaving the armor in his inventory. Now he appeared to be on the same floor he left Demiurge on, the 8th Floor.

He could see Demiurge in the distance, writing something down on what seemed to be a scroll.

'I guess he already made some progress from the looks of it.'

Demiurge appeared to notice his appearance and proceeded to greet Ainz as he came closer. "Welcome back, Lord Ainz."

"I presume you progressed on the task I gave you?" He asked the devil. He already knew what to say. He smiled; telling his master what he found out overfilled him joyfully.

"Indeed. Might I show you what I discovered?"

"Please do, Demiurge."

The two of them walk to where Demiurge built his research station. And it was all very peculiar. Ainz didn't know what all of this was before him. But what he knew was the staff, which was integrated into a sort of golden socket, holding it in position without it floating around. Above the staff was an abstract device made of a golden material floating above the staff.

"I have found what might have caused a disturbance in the fusion. The staff needed a stabilizer and the right magic crystal to absorb all the amounts of energy." Demiurge explained, making Ainz put his hand to his chin. It somewhat made sense.

"Is that so?"

"Yes, my Lord. Above the staff, you see the machine I solely invented to withstand the staff's power." The apparatus Demiurge pointed to appeared made of several layers, all forming around one sphere and expanding to the size of a little table. In the center of the construct was a blue-colored crystal, and right under it was the leaf, held in the air by a sort of gravitational magic.

"Interesting. But does it work? Have you already tried it out?" That was the true question. After all, it seemed fancy, but did it function properly?

"I have waited until your arrival, my Lord. You just have to give the signal."

"Give it a go, Demiurge." With that said, the devil was quick to activate the machine.

"It would be my honor." He snapped his fingers, the machine responding to his snap, the layers of metal turning around the magic crystal as it slowly shone bright. The construct slowly descended onto the staff. Ainz expected the force to repel the leaf to be greater, yet it was almost all gone due to the crystal Demiurge uses to stabilize the process. There wasn't even any blinding light like before, simply a minor source from the fusion.

Ainz watched the spectacle with curious eyes, and so did Demiurge. He hoped it wouldn't fail for some illogical means. He thought it to be perfect, so it should work 100%.

As the leaf and the orb connected, it slowly encircled the divine globe, announcing the end of the merge. But then a crack could be heard as if glass split into a thousand pieces. Both turned their sight to the source.

"That is nothing but a side effect, my Lord. The energy emitted by the fusion seems to be too great for this type of crystal to handle. Unfortunately, there is no other way around it. But I will be quick to get another crystal from my tent."

"You may do so, Demiurge." Demiurge rushed to the nearby tent he built up, where he had all the resources needed. Now Ainz was yet again alone with his precious staff. He rested his gaze on it, first walking around it to inspect the upgrade.

"Just like when I did it." Slowly, he neared himself to the staff. And with a firm grip, he took the staff from its place, wielding it in his hands. He felt the change as the menu appeared again to let him choose another broken ability.

'I know exactly which one to pick. I already have [Temporary World Enemy], [Beyond Limits], [Magical Creation] and [Last Resort]. But now it's time for a more practical ability with little to show. But its efficiency is out of bounds, really.'

"I select [Time Defiance]" The staff glowed a bit, a divine light surrounding it until it returned to its normal state. And it was a success. He could feel it.

'[Time Defiance] is a somewhat broken ability, as it allows me to skip any cooldown from items, skills, spells, or abilities with just the cost of a tier 10 spell. Meaning I could spam Super-Tier spells now just by sacrificing the mana needed for a 10th-tier spell. Pretty useful for me. I could even spam [The Goal Of All Life Is Death] until I run out of mana, in theory. Quite broken indeed, hehehe… If I was still in Yggdrasil with this ability, I would be hunted down by the entire player base until I either deleted by character or returned to level 1. Luckily for me, I am not in Yggdrasil anymore, and I can do pretty much anything.'

He momentarily leaves these thoughts alone as Demiurge returns with a similar crystal.

"It is fine, Demiurge. I do not need to fuse another leaf with the crystal for some time. You may now focus entirely on your other duties."

"Of course, Lord Ainz." He switched the broken crystal with the new one, throwing the old crystal into his inventory. After that, Ainz asked him one last question before he left.

"Demiurge, do you think that was a wise move with the kingdom?" This question shattered the devil, his mind overloading to understand the meaning behind those words. Did he fail or succeed? He didn't know yet until his master revealed it.

"My Lord! I thought bringing such chaos to the capital would increase its downfall by about 50%! I only meant to bring fear of the name Ainz Ooal Gown into their hearts!" His pleading was heard, but Ainz wasn't pleased nor unpleased by his actions.

'So it was Demiurge's idea. Well, now I look like an absolute villain because of him. Could be my fault for letting a maniac of a devil be my tactician.'

"That was a risky move. It may deliver us what we want, or not, but it also fulfills its purpose of getting powerful entities out of their hiding spot." Ainz told from what he could get out of Demiurge's scheme, leaving some minor details out.

"That was exactly my intention, my lord!"

"Mmh, good. It may suffice for now. But I do not wish to appear so cruel again. Only to those who defy me. And good work on the staff by the way. I am impressed, but I can't say I didn't expect you to succeed." The praise Ainz suddenly gave Demiurge made him question if he did something good or bad, but he accepted it nonetheless.

"I simply did what you asked, my lord."

"Good. And what about the Prince? Is he safe?" Demiurge's facial expressions changed three times in a matter of a second until he answered the question.

"Yes, my Lord. He is still on the 5th floor."

"Then I'll leave you to it, Demiurge. Keep up the good work." He told the devil, a portal appearing behind the Overlord to welcome him to wherever he wanted to go.

"Always, my lord." He bowed, Ainz disappeared into the gate and appeared in a Colosseum. It seemed empty until a small dark elf jumped high into the sky and landed barely before Ainz, almost crashing into the giant of an Overlord.

"Welcome, Lord Ainz!" She greeted him with a pleasant smile. Ainz knows she's about 70, yet it would account for 10 or 12 years old in human years. He still didn't know for certain, but that wasn't the most important to find out right now.

"Hello, Aura. How do you feel today? Did you have a good day?" Ainz asked the guardian, which seemed more energetic than most days.

"I feel great, Lord Ainz! My day couldn't be any better! I just finished patrolling the outer skirts of the 6th Floor. I How about you?"

"Me? I guess now that I see that you're feeling good, I do as well." He let out a peal of laughter akin to a grandparent. "So, are you ready for our little journey?"

"I was made ready!" She answered, presenting an aura of pure readiness. Ainz only chuckled at her behavior, enjoying it to the fullest.

"You know, Aura, I do not expect you to be ready at every point. I wish for you to enjoy your time and make the best of it. But let's not waste any more time on my lectures. We have a monster to slay." He opens a gate near the two, implying Aura to enter it. "Go inside and wait for me there. I will come shortly after. I need to do something before." The dark elf child nodded and left into the abyss of the gate, leaving the Overlord alone for a moment.

"[Message]"

{Pandoras Actor? Are you there?}

{Yes, my Lord! What do you wish from your Creation?} To Ainz, his luck, Pandora didn't seem as cringeworthy as before, maybe exaggerating one sentence a bit, but nothing more.

{It's your time to shine. You'll play Momon from now on until I say otherwise. Do you understand the assignment?} He didn't want to include telling him not to speak German, hoping Pandora's Actor would know not to.

{As you wish, mein Lord!} There it was, Ainz's skeletal hands twitched at the German word, hoping Pandoras' Actor wouldn't continue with more.

{Mmh, good. I am counting on you you keep my identity hidden. Act casual, don't forget that.}

{I will never forget an order, my Lord!}

{Good. I'll see you once I'm back.} Ainz cut the connection as he left through the portal, following Aura to wherever it led him.

I wanted to point out how Ainz gains new levels and classes. I pointed this out in chapter 10, I believe, but I didn't say how he really gets new levels. Without interacting with the staff, the exp is still distributed to each new class he has, but it isn't unlocked. He needs to interact with it to unlock his classes, so he could be level 110 but technically still be level 100 because he never unlocked his 10 levels. Here are his current leveling classes:

Racial Level:

-⋏⟒ ⍀⍜⌰⍜⍀⎅ - 65/160

Job Classes:

-⏁⏃ ⏁⟟⏁⟟⏃⋏ - 87.5/120

-⏃⍀⋔⍜⍀⟒⎅ ⋔⏃ ⟒ - 66.5/120

-⎍⋏⊑⍜⌰⊬ ⋏⟟ ⊑⏁ - 62.5/120

-⊑⏃⋔⌿⟟⍜⋏ - 35.5/120

-⎅⟒⟟⏁⊬ - 26/200

They are hidden until he reaches level 1 in one of them.
