Chapter 15: Dead Tree Tales

An Overlord and a Dark Elf walked through a dense forest, the Forest of Tob, to be more precise. It was a place filled with monsters waiting for a victim to befall. But this time, the two were the monsters on the hunt.

"So, Aura. How is the relationship between you and your brother?" Ainz asked out of the blue. The silence was unbearable, so he did what every average person would. Try to start a conversation. He had to at least try, even if he wasn't the best at it.

"Uhm, I think the two of us have it nice. But if only he would listen to me sometimes! He can be such a crybaby!" Out of her anger, she punched a tree to her left, punching a hole in it. From her reaction alone, everyone should be able to tell there was something between her and her brother.

"You know, Aura. It is fine to get annoyed sometimes. And I'm sure you would love to try to change that about your brother, wouldn't you?" Ainz asked, looking at the dark elf.

"Sure, if I could," Aura said.

Ainz put a hand to his chin. "Mmh, well, I don't believe I can as well. You know, when your brother was created, his personality was made as well. And to change that is rather difficult. Even for me." Aura looked at Ainz with a confused look.

"But, can't you do something Lord Ainz? You're the Supreme One. There should be nothing you shouldn't be able to do, right?" She wasn't sure anymore, and for that, Ainz thought he successfully convinced an NPC that he wasn't almighty once.

"Mmh, maybe I can. But that is not the point. The point is that your brother has a set personality and that personality has been made by a Supreme Being." Before he could tell more, Aura intercepted him quickly.

"I understand it now, Lord Ainz! If a Supreme Being wanted Mare to be like that, it must stay like that forever!" She said with confidence, but for Ainz, this was yet another failure in communication as he palmed his head with his skeletal hand.

"Seems I need to choose my words carefully. So, how do I get myself out of this one." He thought, but soon an answer came to mind. "Aura, that may be so. But, you should always try to improve, even out your traits, and develop new ones. You should flourish and develop further than your creators imagined. Only so will you make your creator proud. Because that is something all of them wished for." He lied, but he knew they would say something similar. What father wishes not for his child to develop its character and grow beyond his wishes.

"So, the Supreme Beings want us to change?" Aura asked, getting everything mixed up as her brain overloaded slowly.

"Yes, that is also what I want. If you or your brother stay like this forever, you will be annoyed for eternity by his attitude. To avoid that, both of you have to change." He said seeing the mimic change on Aura's face gave him a sense of success to finally influence the character of an NPC for good. "If this works, then I might also try this with Albedo. Some smart wordplay, and I can have her of me in an instant. I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I should say it was a mistake to change her settings." He began thinking of how to lose Albedo's insatiable lust for him, but just before he was about to walk off a cliff, he got back to his senses.

"Woah." He heard Aura say, and as he looked to the horizon, he saw it. Its shadow is massive, its size three times as big as Gargantua. A giant of nature, no less.

"That must be the Evil Tree we heard about," Ainz remarked. The creature was colossal, nothing exaggerated by the Adventurers Guild. It was a simple tree, yet so big that it dwarfed everything in its vicinity. "Treants also existed in Yggdrasil, so for them to exist here would be a possibility."

"Where would such a big tree come from…" Aura muttered to herself, not noticing that Ainz picked up her talk.

"That tree is a treant, a race which was also in Yggdrasil. It could have come here through some unknown methods or is just an inhabitant of this world. I cannot say for sure." He saw many of them on Alfheim, and they were pretty big, but not as big as this one. "The biggest treant boss I fought was about 50 meters high, but this here is over the top!"

"Aura, if we want to kill this tree, we need to deal a great amount of damage to it." Ainz used [Life Essence] to see how much health the tree had and was honestly not surprised. "Do you see that, Aura?" He asked the Ranger, who was already inspecting the creature.

"Yes, Lord Ainz. It seems that its HP is off the charts. But from its other stats, I would say he is about level 80, maybe." She evaluated, meaning only its health was that massive, and the rest low to mid.

"It must be some racial bonus. As for its size, it certainly needs that much HP, but its agility is probably lower than level 20." He assessed. "You could do that in Yggdrasil as well. Level in job and racial classes, which provided more health than usual. They were usually inefficient in dealing damage but were used more as tanks. This tree, however, I don't know if I would want to be a tree, even with that much health."

"Aura, we will attack with ranged attacks first, making the tree come to us. And that is why I brought you here. Is this position good for you?" Ainz asked. He knew the perfect position could change the outcome of a battle. And this cliff seemed pretty good as a sniping spot.

"No problem! The treant is about a kilometer away, and with that size, I sure will not miss." She assured with a thumbs up.

"Mmh, good. And, Aura, I have something for you." Ainz's hand disappeared into his inventory, and as soon as he took out the Item, Aura was almost jumping from excitement. Shalltear had received a gift and now was her time.

It was a bow of divine quality, no less. It was carved out of redwood, solidified with golden linings on the edges. It was pretty decorative, looking like a piece out of a legend held by the Goddess Artemins, no less. Its string was made out of pure light, shooting magical arrows from itself. And the best was that it didn't need any ammunition. It wasn't as powerful as Peroronchino's bow, but it was powerful nonetheless.

"This bow, called [Flaming Light], shoots forth magical arrows that deal fire-type damage. And a useful ability of this bow is that its damage is increased the longer you hold it. Meaning you can deal much damage to a slow creature like the Evil Tree." He held out the bow with both hands, inviting Aura to take the bow for herself.

"L-Lord Ainz, I-I don't know if I should accept this!"

"It is fine, Aura. This is a gift from me. Take it." If her master said so, then it was what she had to do. Slowly, she picked up the bow and inspected it carefully. The bow automatically adjusted itself to her size, making her handle it easier. "This bow will help us defeat the Evil Tree on this mission. And you will keep it afterward for your future tasks. It is quite a useful weapon, and I want my subordinates only to have the best of the best." He said, not seeing that Aura desperately tried to hold her tears.

"Thank you, Lord Ainz! I will guard the bow with my life." Aura exclaimed, using her finger to wipe her tears away before they could drop to the ground.

"Let us hope it will never get to that point. Now, can you identify the Evil Tree's current state?" Changing the subject, Aura quickly inspected the creature again, determining its state with her many skills.

"The tree isn't emitting any signs of activity. It is asleep, or something like that. Maybe gathering some energy for a fight or two."

"Well, I hope he didn't see us coming then. With the tree in such a state, we can easily surprise him with a powerful attack. But another thing, Aura."

"Yes, Lord Ainz?"

"We might need some of your pets ready. They will be useful to distract the creature when close." He was confident the bow alone wouldn't do as much damage to kill it before it arrived at their location. The tree was slow, but at its size, it was still going faster than a running man.

"Sure, I can call 5 or 10 here." She answered.

"Then do that. We will need them." As Ainz said that, Aura whisted, trying to call her tamed beasts from near Nazarick. "That may take some time. But we can wait."

"They will try to be here as fast as possible!" She reassured her Lord with a thumbs up.

"I could have just teleported them here. But I can't do much if they are already on their way." Aura's beasts would've arrived quicker, but the tree didn't seem to be in a rush. "So, do you want to practice with the bow before your tamed beasts arrive?" Ainz asked.

"Sure, but do we want to do that here? I mean, the tree is right there. What if it has some connection with the other trees in the area, like some information field that tells it if something happened?" She said, making Ainz see just how fast she was learning from the books he gave her about Yggdrasil wildlife.

"You're right, Aura. We can't risk that. Then, Let us simply fly into the sky, and I will create some targets for you, alright?" Aura nodded, and Ainz was quick to cast [Fly] on both of them. He guided her into the air until she felt comfortable flying alone. They went up about 100 meters until they thought it was safe. "Here, I will create some floating objects, and you will try to hit them." He said and cast [Create Item] to make an orb float 50 meters away from Aura. She pulled the string, and to her surprise, an arrow made of fire appeared, getting bigger the longer she held the line. She let go, and the arrow flew toward the orb, destroying it in one hit.

"Well done, Aura." He said, while creating another ten pairs of orbs, this time 100 meters away for her to hit them. And, as Ainz predicted, she didn't miss a single one. That was the benefit of a level 100 NPC.

They would go further to more obscure targets. For once, Ainz summoned a wraith for her to hit, but she argued that it was ethereal and she wouldn't hit it. Ainz reassured her that her bow could hit ethereal and physical targets, as the bow had the ability to even hit ethereal targets. With that knowledge, Aura shot forth an arrow toward the wraith, which died in one simple hit.

The next thing they tried was moving targets. He commanded his summoned wraiths to each carry an aiming platform. But even in movement, Aura could hit each target and even kill the wraiths behind them.

"Good. Even if this is easy for you, it is always good to test out new equipment before using them in a real fight." He patted the dark elf on her shoulder, teaching her yet another lesson from his pvp mindset. "And it seems that your beasts arrived." Ainz pointed down to the ground, where many different creatures stood, from a dinosaur to an oversized lizard to a chameleon the size of an elephant. The diversity was quite noticeable. But that was of little importance in this mission.

They returned, and Ainz told Aura where to position her beasts. "Put five of them to our left and the other five to our right. When I signal you to release them upon the tree, I want you to tell your beasts immediately." He said, this time, serious so no mistakes would happen.

"Yes, Lord Ainz." She said, sending her beasts away to where Ainz told her to put them.

"And after the Evil Tree is dead, I will use [Avarice and Generosity] to extract the treants exp, is that clear?"

"Clear as ice!" She responded, energetic as ever.

"Good, we will begin with the attack in one minute. Until then, I will cast some spells on you that will increase your damage output and some spells on our surroundings." He said. He began infusing Aura with several buffs he knew would be best. And when he finished, he did the same with the terrain, putting some spells all over the place.

"And before I forget anything else." He looked at his right hand, seeing that his [Greater Experience] ring was still on his finger. "Good, now the spell."

"[Extend Magic: Greater Experience]" With that done, Ainz felt confident starting the ambush.

"You may begin, Aura." He said, and the dark elf started to procure a projectile with her bow. It grew in size, and if Ainz had to guess, with it grew, the damage it would do as if it was increasing in tiers. He assumed that the maximum damage it could do would rival a 10th Tier spell, beginning at a 5th Tier shot if just spammed.

After holding the string for too long, the bow grew unstable, and Aura was drawn to release the arrow. It made a sound like no other, as if it was piercing the air around itself. And when it hit its target, it let off an explosion like no other.

"Good shot," Ainz said. But his words were quickly silenced by a terrifying growl from the creature before them. It seemed to be in pain and just awoke from its deep slumber. Slowly, it turned around to face Ainz and Aura. Its mouth and eyes make it a terrifying enemy to face. It was ugly as it was big.

"Again," Ainz said, and Aura started to shoot another arrow at the tree. Somehow, it knew exactly where the shot came from and directly faced the duo.

Aura shot the treant thrice, making it halt with every hit she made. But the tree came closer nonetheless. Now, it was slightly more than 500 meters away from them.

"Again."

Aura shot more arrows, but the tree only came closer every minute. Now, it was only 200 meters away, its shadow already covering the both of them. Ainz could see its veins going towards them, but he had something planned if that were to happen. Just when the treant's veins were to come closer, massive explosions set off all around Ainz and Aura, destroying all of the treant's veins and dealing some damage to itself. But when the smoke settled, the tree was still there, a bit damaged but alive. It tried to shoot some of its seeds toward Ainz, but he quickly produced a [Wall of Skeleton] before him, stopping any incoming seeds from hitting him or Aura. But the wall didn't hold for long, as Aura's blast hit right through it, hitting the tree in its mouth. It created a huge explosion, and smoke could be seen exiting the treants every hole. It let out a growl different than the first as if it was in great pain. But the tree didn't give up.

The treant had regenerated its veins and reshot them at the two.

"Aura, now!" That was the signal, and Aura quickly blew her beasts to attack. They took all the Evil Tree's attention to themselves, distracting the veins from Ainz and Aura. "It worked. Go on!" Aura began shooting again, hitting the tree with more arrows. "It might not be enough." As he saw how much health the tree had left, he thought he had to improvise a little bit. "Its health is lower than half, meaning that we need to do even more damage now that it is close." He thought carefully about what to do. He could cast spells upon the creature, but that was not the plan. "I got it!"

With his right hand, he took the [Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown] out of his inventory, calling on its power to summon an elemental of great power.

"[Summon: Primal Fire Elemental]"

Before Ainz, a fiery being emerged, its flames hot enough to burn even the strongest metals. Its Level was higher than the tree, and it focused solely on dealing with damage instead of having a vast HP bar. Meaning even it alone should be able to take care of it.

"Attack!" Ainz commanded, and the primal elemental was quick to follow. And just when Aura's summons were defeated or injured, the elemental was able to take the tree's attention. It entered the battle with a fire breath towards the treant, which let the tree let out a cry of pain as a tornado of flames hit its body. The flame breath hit the tree right into its mouth, heating it up so that it began burning from the inside out. It tried to block the flames with its veins, but they were nothing compared to the inferno of the primal elemental, and they were quick to burn to ash.

Aura was ready to unleash another arrow upon the creature, but Ainz dismissed her. "Do it." He said, Aura releasing the string, finishing the fight finally.

A growl like no other escaped the depths of the treant until it lost any movement and seemed to appear like any other tree, lifeless.

"It seems it is over," Ainz said, seeing that the tree's life essence was done with. But before they could celebrate, Ainz used Avarice to get the experience from the tree. "Avarice, you may take." As if it was sucking the soul out of the tree, an essence was drawn out of it and into the gauntlet, symbolizing that he successfully took the experience of the Evil Tree for himself.

"This experiment was successful, thanks to you, Aura. Without you, I would have a harder time killing that thing."

"I am eager to server, Lord Ainz." She responded.

"Then you may as well organize for the tree remains to be brought to the 6th Floor. It might have some rare materials I want to collect." He knew most treants didn't have the biggest loot as they were similar to golems and were used to defend stuff. But maybe Demiurge could use its leftovers somehow.

"Sure!" Aura replied thumbs up.

"Good. I will leave back to Nazarick then." He opened a gate and found himself in his favorite room where peace was a thing that existed for the Ruler of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. In here, he could do stuff he usually couldn't. Now, looking at his gauntlet, Generosity, he thought about something. "Should I use it now? Maybe I will be able to use the exp for something else. But there are surely other entities I could kill for the experience. Fuck it. I want to level up. That's the only thing I have an interest in right now."

"Generosity, you may give." Suddenly the essence he trapped in the world item went inside his body, traversing his whole being and adding itself to Ainz's experience.

"Did I level up?" He felt something, and that something was that he was stronger, he could feel the difference exactly. Even if the feeling of his alter self diminished by the minute, he knew he had changed. "But how do I see my levels even? There's no menu, nothing." But something told him, called him to touch his staff. Whatever it was, he could feel the need for it. So he did precisely so. He took his staff out of his inventory.

"What?!"

Before him appeared a menu cast by the staff itself. He recognized the design from the last time he added another ability. And what he found was most impressive.

[Level up]

[New Job Classes Unlocked]

-Tactician(Genius)

-Armored Mage

-Dark Knight

-Champion

[New Racial Classes Unlocked]

[Error: Class could not be unlocked]

"So I got four new levels? But how? I thought I could only level up one Level after another?" He needed clarification about why this was so. He tried to expand a class, and just as he thought of that, he could see each class in more detail.

[New Job Classes]

[Tactician]-Lv 1(130.5/240)

[Armored Mage]-Lv 1(106.5/240)

[Dark Knight]-Lv 1(102.5/240)

[Champion]-Lv 1(75.5/240)

[⎅⟒⟟⏁⊬]-?

[New Racial Classes]

[⋏⟒ ⍀⍜ ⍜⎅]-Lv 1(Locked)

"Now I understand the principle of leveling up! Its investing experience points in each class separately, just like in real life! If I would farm carrots for a long time, no wonder I would have levels in farmer. Meaning the system to level up is from this world, meaning I just need to invest time in things. But what about the locked racial class? The only way I can explain that is if I lack a necessary class or Level. So I need to level up or find the right class to ascend into a new race. Wouldnt be so easy, heh?" Before he turned to each separate class, he pressed the notification button to receive what new skills he possessed.

[New Skill List]

[Tactician]-Lv 1-Passive Skill: [Critical Thinking]

[Dark Knight]-Lv 1-Active Skill: [Dark Blade]

[Champion]-Lv 1-Active Skill: [Guiding Swordhand]

"It doesn't feel as if I just learned this information. I kind of felt these abilities before, just when I leveled up. This here seems to be information pure. But what is this?" He was drawn to a nearby button that shimmered red every two seconds as if it wanted to get his attention. And as he pressed it, a new menu appeared.

[Notice: Possibility to extend class rarity of existing classes]

[Tactician]-5 Lv-[Master Tactician(Genius)]-10 Lv

[Dark Knight]-5 Lv-[Darkest Knight]-10 Lv

[Champion]-5 Lv-[Unholy Champion]-10 Lv

Please press [Yes] or [No]

"Again, this staff keeps putting me in situations where I have to decide what's best. But how do I know? Wait, it says that it wants to extend my gained classes with my existing ones, meaning it wants to put an alignment of sorts on them. As I have a more unholy build, it adapted my new classes with the existing ones, finding any possible class that could lead to me getting a rare class that is only obtainable through a certain build! Of course, I press; Yes!" Without hesitation, he pressed [Yes] and saw how his classes were changed forever.

"Now, let's see what I can do with these classes."

[Master Tactician(Genius)]

Lv 2:

"Wow, not as overpowered as I expected, but still. To believe my avatar would experience any classes than the ones I had is refreshing. [Master Tactician] allows me to get better at tactics, [Armored Mage] allows me to wear light armor and cast the first Tier with it, [Darkest Knight] is a warrior-oriented class, giving me an ability and boost to my stats, and finally [Unholy Champion], which doesn't give me much, but more damage capability is always appreciated. But the Genius tag is something I have never seen before. It gives me an experience boost to that same class, weird. But why complain? It only serves me."

He went further into the possibilities of his new classes and what he could achieve with them, and he didn't notice time flying by. Hours passed, and he was still looking at them.

"What I would like to test are the capabilities of myself as a warrior now. I have two levels in a warrior class, so I should be able to hold a sword now." He went to his nearest deposit of swords. They all looked the same, but that was to be expected of some low-level swords. As he expected, he picked one up and successfully made a swing attack without [Perfect Warrior]. "It is still weaker than when I do it with [Perfect Warrior], but it works." For him, this was a success. But he wondered. "How do classes work exactly? Am I now a warrior? Do I know how to fight? I have the feeling I know a thing or two, probably because of the two levels I have in [Darkest Knight] and [Unholy Champion], but that is all. It seems the classes transfer some sort of knowledge to me that comes instantly. I should test this." Without saying anything further, he teleported to the 6th Floor, where he was met with a beautiful starry night.

Quick, he put on his Momon armor and told the Dragonoids to bring some dummies for him to test his abilities on.

"[Perfect Warrior]"

In an instant, Ainz felt strength fuel him like no other. Now, he had some knowledge of how to act as a warrior. "If my classes and Cocytus are to be believed, I should be a capable warrior now."

He turned towards the dummies and activated an ability he gained with [Darkest Knight].

"[Darken]" As he activated the skill, he could feel his two greatswords change into pure darkness, making them suck in all light around them. He used them to slash at the dummies with speed far greater than before and precision a veteran warrior would show. But, he still wasn't as capable of a warrior as many believed him to be.

"I seem to have improved. This knowledge of fighting with a sword came to me just like I learned how to utilize magic. How it works, no clue. But that it works, that is important." He jumped in the air and landed with a sword in a dummies head. "Well, that was certainly fancy. That was a warrior skill I just used. Incredible. What about the other from the [Unholy Champion] class, [Guiding Swordhand]?" He thought of how to utilize said skill, but he didn't know exactly how. "Just trying it out on a dummy. Let's see what it does."

"[Guiding Swordhand]"

Suddenly information flooded his brain like nothing before. As if on instinct, his body moved automatically to hit the dummy with the best possible attack, decapitating the dummy in an instant.

"So that was an experience. I never thought I use warrior skills. But they are pretty cool." This time, he looked at the destruction he made with basic skills. "And, as I have the [Time Defiance] ability from my world item, I can spam my skills. Like [Guiding Swordhand], it could help me look like a real warrior instead of a skeleton playing as one. It certainly is one handy ability I got."

He played enough to see that he was now closer to a real warrior than ever, something he could use to his advantage. He would be unstoppable if he could become as proficient with the sword.

{Lord Ainz?} A voice sounded in his head, right on time as well.

{Yes, Narberal?}

{The kingdom seems to begin pulling troops from E-Rantel. They seem to have accepted the fate of the city already.}

{Good news. Exactly as I predicted.}

{Should we begin occupying the city, My Lord?}

{No, we promised them they had one month to give the city up. We will wait until then before we act further.}

{As you wish, My Lord}

Narberal cut the connection as soon as she could, not daring to use any more of her Lord's time.

"So the kingdom has chosen the better option. A shame. I could've farmed some good exp if they sent a decent army after me. But whatever, better to kill monsters than to antagonize me with the inhabitants of this world." Before he went on with his day, a thought pierced his mind. "Wait! With every Level comes a Super-Tier Spell, just after lvl 70. I should have four new Super-Tier spells, but how do I even learn them? I got no menu to help me, except…" He pulled out his staff again, trying to focus on Super-Tier spells. And just as he thought, the staff answered diligently.

[New Super-Tier Spells available]

"What now? It shows me I got four new spell slots for Super-Tier spells, but what of it?" He tried focusing his thoughts again, but nothing happened. Now he decided to press on everything he could find until.

[Archive loaded: SUPER_TIER_SPELLS]

And then he saw loads and loads of Super-Tier spells even he didn't recognize, each with different effects he never heard of. "This is amazing. I wonder if this works with normal spells as well. As I just got four levels, I should be able to get 12 new spells or skills." He scrolled down, reading every spell carefully. He picked four out that he was interested in the most.

-[Simulacrum] Creates an exact copy of the caster.

-[Symbol of Death] Boosts the skills of any undead in a specific area.

-[Doomsday] An AOE spell that creates massive earthquakes and storms, signaling the world's end.

-[Pan-Necronium] Summons 6 lvl 80 [Deathbringer].

[Are you sure?]

[Yes] [No]

He pressed yes, finalizing his answer, and suddenly he felt the spells being added to his being as if he always had them.

"That's done with the Super-Tier spells, but what about spells and skills? I should be able to learn three new spells or warrior skills per Level, meaning 12 of them should be unlocked. I hope the staff can do that too." He focused on the staff to show him how he could gain new spells, and even for that, it had a solution.

The list continued, and Ainz could only fathom what kind of power the staff possessed. It seemed it downloaded some type of backup from the restricted Yggdrasil servers to be able and give him these new abilities, skills, and spells. But the Developers forgot to nerv the [Leaf of Yggdrasil]. Ainz could only praise the inability of the Devs.

"Okay, select specialized spells and skills. Uhu. Mmh. I take this one, and this one…" Again, he selected all kinds of spells and skills to fill up his 12 free spell slots. For him, it brought him back to when he was still a low-level player, fascinated by all the different and vast spells he could learn. But with his experience, he could choose only the best of the best now.

[Yes] [No]

Again, he pressed yes, confirming his selection and getting a feeling of knowledge added to his being. It was strange for an undead to feel something again, but this feeling was more than an emotion. It was growth. Ainz Ooal Gowns growth.

"Incredible. This feels like a dream, but it feels so real. Just like back in the game, Im leveling up. After all that time I spent at lvl 100, it finally happened again. Growing beyond the lvl cap is proof of the greatness of Ainz Ooal Gown."

So here it is another chapter for my beloved fanfiction. Ainz finally leveled up not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times! Again, please tell me with your reviews how your liking the story and if there is something disturbing you. I'll try to update soon, but I cant promise anything.
