Chapter 7: Deadly Sands
The supervillains do not stop appearing! It's been a while since Electro's attack. Little by little, criminals have appeared who have acquired super powers or use highly advanced technology. These subjects have caused problems for both the police and our favorite hero. The security of the city was in the hands of a teenage boy who had spider powers. Well, he was the only one capable of stopping the mutants that were appearing. Unfortunately, more powerful beings appear every day. And in fact, we will meet one of the most powerful enemies that Spider-Guppy will face.
It was a dark night on the outskirts of the city of New Bubble York. It was a lonely, empty and dark place. In this place, we can see several police patrols watching all over the place. They used police dogs and flashlights to find someone. Or at least, that's the plan.
"Have you found any clues?" A police officer asked.
"Negative sir. But we're on the lookout for any sign" Another agent answered.
"Arf Arf Grrrr Arf" Some police dogs began to bark when they detected a mysterious figure running from the police.
"We found him! Go get him!" Some officers yelled. At that moment, they started a police chase to catch the mysterious criminal. They were willing to hunt down the fugitive criminal. After several minutes of chasing, they managed to corner him towards a security fence.
"Uh oh!" The mysterious man said worriedly.
"Flint Marko, you are surrounded by the police! Give up! There is no escape" One commander shouted at him. The criminal was a light-skinned, brown-haired adult guppy using an iconic green-striped shirt. Without much thought, the criminal decided to quickly scale the security fence and managed to enter the mysterious complex. The policemen were planning how to quickly enter the place. What Flint didn't know was that maybe entering that place was a big mistake. Why do I say this? Maybe it's because of the sign he didn't see.
"Restricted Access: Nuclear Test Zone. No passing"
Marko ran as fast as he could in order to lose the policemen who were chasing him. The good news is that he managed to lose his pursuers. The bad news is that he didn't pay attention to where he was walking and fell into a mysterious well.
"Ahhhhh!" He screamed as he fell. Interestingly, the bottom was covered in sand. Therefore, the fall was not painful "Ugh….Well I was lucky. Now I have to get out of here" He told himself before something unfortunate happened. It turns out that all this time, Flint was trapped in a huge radioactive centrifuge.
"Systems in Operation. High Radiation Levels"
"What?! No! NO! WAIT! I´M HERE! I´M HERE!" The man screamed desperate and terrified. It seems that in the main computers some scientists were doing nuclear tests with sand. It seems that they activated the systems of the nuclear centrifuge without knowing that someone was inside. The radiation began to affect Flint and he noticed how his molecular composition was being altered little by little. He noticed how his fingers, his fin and the rest of his body were gradually turning into fine sand. His entire body was being mutated "NOOOOOOOOO!" At the end of the process, he turned into pure sand and fell apart in the well.
A new day has begun in New Bubble York, but we will focus on an eccentric place, the enormous Bubble Bugle building. The major journalism company. Where we can see certain well-known characters discussing work.
"Sales have improved since that masked menace appeared! And profits are skyrocketing ever since those superpowered freaks came out" The head of the press, Grumpfish Jameson, commented.
"Shouldn't we worry that more and more powerful criminals are appearing?" A brown fish asked. By the way, his name is Robbie Robertson. which was a major publisher.
"As long as those lunatics keep making me rich…..Plus we can't do much. Since that wall-crawling criminal appeared, these crazy people come out more and more every day" Grumpfish commented seriously.
"But Mr. Jameson, as the unofficial Spider-Guppy photographer I can assure you that he is not a threat and he is a hero" Gil defended his hero. Or rather, he was defending himself without anyone knowing.
"That masked criminal has only caused trouble. You haven't seen all the property damage Spider-Guppy causes alongside psychics like Rhino, Vulture and I won't forget the electrical failures caused by the Electro guy" Mr. Grumpfish replied.
"Spider-Guppy simply confronted them to stop them" Gil answered.
"Yeah Yeah…Anyway….Do you have the photos I asked for?" The big green fish asked him.
"Here are the pictures. Just as you wish, sir" Gil delivered the photos he took.
"Just the way I like them. I will expose that wall-crawler as the criminal that he is. You can go, Parker. And don't forget the photos for next week!" He ordered him. Gil just sighed and withdrew. It was useless trying to convince his boss that Spider-Guppy wasn't as much of a threat as he claims. He decided to find the secretary Betty Brand to get paid for the photos.
"Very good, Gil. The photos come out better every day" Betty commented happily.
"Hehe thanks! And that's why I plan to get myself a more modern professional camera. Imagine how they will be" Gil commented his plan happily.
"I'm glad to hear you like to improve. It is something admirable. It will be hard to save for that camera but I know you will make it. Alright, here's your payment. I'll see you soon" The snail woman said happily.
"See you soon, Betty Brand!" Gil said before quickly leaving to go back home and spend some time with his only family. With his beloved Aunt May.
Gil came home after his student, work day and of course, after his heroic day.
"Hi there, Aunt May…." Gil said happily. What he did not expect is that his aunt received him with a slightly serious face.
"Gil…We must talk now…Where were you? And why have you been coming home late?" May asked worriedly.
"Oh well…Uhhh…I fell asleep in the library...I did a lot of homework and...well...I also had to deliver some pictures to Jameson. You know, studying and working hard" He said with a nervous smile. Strangely, he didn't lie to her at all. He just didn't mention that he had to stop some thieves in the afternoon and evening.
"Oh Gil! I have already told you that you should not overload yourself with so many responsibilities. Look, you shouldn't work to help the house. Just studying is already a lot of responsibility. You should do normal teenage things like hang out with friends and even date someone special" May told him.
"Auntie, don´t worry about me. I like to help you with the house in every possible way. You are the most important to me. So don't worry about me" Gil wanted to calm her.
"(sigh) I bet you won't change your mind. You're a bit stubborn, just like your Uncle Ben...Hehehe...You have a certain resemblance to him..." The old woman said with a tiny smile. Gil smiled at her in response.
"Let's eat something together and I'll go to sleep" The young guppy told her.
They both shared a quiet and simple dinner. And after that, Gil went to bed so he could rest. And just at that precise moment, he received a call.
RING! RING!
"Ugh…Mmmmm…Hello?" Gil answered the call.
"Hi there, buddy"
"Goby? Why are you calling me at this hour? Do you know what time it is?" Gil asked with a sleepy tone of voice.
"I know, dude. But I have to tell you some news that you will like. Tomorrow I'm going on a date with Deema Stacey!" Goby Osborn said happily.
"Oh yeah yeah…I´m happy for you….Congratulations….But you could tell me tomorrow" Gil said tiredly.
"I am calling you now because it concerns you too. Tomorrow I will go out with Deema... but we will not go alone. Molly Jane Watson is coming with us...And I thought I'd extend the invitation to you, man. Strangely...it was Molly who told me to tell you" Goby said with a mischievous tone of voice.
"Wait, really? That sounds perfect. It's like a double date! It's just not a date itself. Sounds more like a friendly outing... But it sounds good" Gil said, a bit happy.
"That's right! See you tomorrow!" Goby said before cutting the call.
"Bye….Well….Sounds like tomorrow will be a big day for Gil Parker" He smiled and fell asleep.
A new morning arrived and Gil knew perfectly well that it would be a different and special day. He would finally see Molly Jane Watson on a friendly date. It would have been better if Goby and Deema weren't around, but to connect once with the girl he loved for a long time, it's a good start. The boy said goodbye to his dear aunt and told her about his plans for that day. May was happy that Gil was spending time with his friends (and with the girl he liked. That's right, May knows perfectly well that her nephew liked her neighbor). Young Parker decided to leave the house, saying goodbye to his aunt with a kiss on the cheek. Curiously, Gil would not run into Molly, but Goby. Both agreed to meet in that place. The "date" would be in Central Park. Both boys arrived there and according to the plan, the girls would arrive. Both boys were waiting for the girls for a few minutes.
"Are you sure they were coming? Don't you think we should have gone to pick them up?" Gil asked curiously.
"They will be here soon. At least Deema told me she'd go get Molly and I'd pick you up" Goby told him.
"How odd. If Molly and I live close to her...why did Deema pick her up when I could?" Parker asked confusedly.
"(sigh) Girls" Osborn just shrugged. He supposed they wanted to talk before the impromptu friendly date.
"So speaking of us behind our backs...that's not nice" Both boys were surprised to see that the two girls they were talking about appeared behind them in no time.
"Ahhh!" Gil and Goby gasped surprisedly. It was Deema with her arms crossed. When she saw that both boys were scared, she started to laugh.
"Hahaha! You should have seen the faces you made! It was so funny" Deema said funnily.
"So funny" Goby rolled his eyes.
"I was just playing with you. Wasn't it fun?" Deema Stacey smiled.
"That was kinda funny" Behind Deema, our beloved pink-haired guppy appeared. Molly Jane Watson. For Gil, those seconds were eternal. It is as if time and space had stopped while she was appreciating the beauty of her best friend. At that moment, she approached Gil and Goby "Hi, guys! I'm glad you were able to come" She said with a smile.
"We are glad that you invited us. Isn't that right, Gil?" Goby answered with a confident smile. He turned to see his best friend who was motionless. His cheeks were completely red and he was in some kind of trance.
"Uhhhh Huhhh" Gil couldn't articulate a word as he was stunned to see Molly who had dressed up simply but it was enough to leave him speechless.
"Gil…Gil!...GIL PARKER!" Goby decided to nudge his best friend's shoulder lightly.
"Huh?! Oh yeah! Yeah! Huh? Euhhh…H…Hi, girls" He smiled nervously. Goby just facepalmed himself.
"Hi, Gil! Nice to see the Spider-Guppy photographer again!" Deema winked at him.
"I'm glad you were able to come. I...well...wanted to see you for a long time. I just know that you have been busy with your work as a photographer" Molly gave him a sincere smile.
"Well... Hehehe... " Gil touched his neck nervously. Goby and Deema saw how things were going, so they decided to intervene before another stupid thing happened.
"How about we walk in the park?" Deema proposed fastly.
"Sounds good, right?" Molly accepted.
"Of course!" Goby answered. The four friends decided to go out together in the park. They decided to sit together. They all ate ice cream while chatting. It was evident that this meeting was not a coincidence. Goby and Deema had planned everything so that Gil and Molly would be together. And it seems that things were slowly progressing.
While this was happening, we returned to the nuclear test complex where Flint suffered an accident regarding a radiation sand experiment. We can see the pit filled with sand. Immediately, a hand made entirely of sand appears. Little by little, a mysterious figure made of sand stood up and began to move awkwardly. He was just getting used to having a tail and body made of pure sand. It was evident, he was scared of himself. He became another mutant like the famous Electro. Only this time, he was a monster made of sand. He didn't know what to do, until he noticed an object on the ground. It was a very moving photo. It was him with his little daughter. Daughter who was in an orphanage because her mother had died. Not to mention that her father entered the world of crime. Being a wanted thief. He looked at the photo with melancholy, because what would his little girl think when she saw that her father was a mutant? But Flint remembered something else: his mission. The reason why he became a criminal. He NEEDED money to be able to pay for the treatment and medicines for his little daughter who is sick and worse, dying little by little. Marko thought it through. He couldn't leave his little girl, even though he was a monster now. So, he had an idea: Take advantage of his new powers to take back his thefts. And this time, no one could arrest him again. With that in mind, he started to walk... towards the city!
The friend's date was going well. Goby and Deema had planned to leave Molly and Gil alone. What they didn't plan was what they were going to do while that happened. Goby wasted no time proposing that they both could have fun. That way, they went out together. Gil and Molly were on a bridge on the lake looking out at the scenery. No one said a single word. Evidently, the blue-haired boy was dying of nerves while Molly remained very thoughtful.
"I wonder where Goby and Deema are" Gil asked himself.
"Who knows? Possibly those two are having a great time. Deema seems interested in your best friend" Molly smiled funnily.
"Hehe you can't imagine what Goby says about her when we're alone. He literally melts for her" Gil commented with a smile. She giggled.
"The Great Goby Osborn is interested in Deema Stacey. It's good news for her. Sounds like that's bad news for ALL the girls in high school. They all die for him" Molly remembered his friend´s popularity.
"All the girls, right? Including you?" Gil asked nervously. Molly thought a bit about it.
"Hmmmm well…..He is a nice and charismatic boy...Handsome and not to mention he is rich. The perfect combination for any girl to be interested in. I admit that I like him. He is a good and nice friend. He's nothing like the smug rich kids on TV…." Molly explained a bit. Gil felt tense and even discouraged to hear that she might have feelings for his best friend "...However, even though he's a good choice...He's not my type. I only see him as a friend, and he seems to feel the same way about me. And that makes me happy"
"Hehehe yeah. Besides, you're already an engaged girl. I mean, you're the girlfriend of the famous Dash Thompson, right?" Gil said that innocently. But the girl was silent for a few seconds. That didn't make her feel good.
"Oh….Gil….I don't think I've told you before but...Dash and I...we're not a couple anymore. He and I broke up" Molly told him.
"R…Really?" He was surprised. Ultimately, that's good news for him.
"Yeah, I can't believe I wasted my time with him. He…he just wasn't the guy I thought he was" Molly said her reasons.
"(I'm surprised you've noticed until now)" Gil said it in his mind.
"He only saw me as a pretty face and a trophy. I am more than just that! Also...I found out that he was a jerk...with many guys...including you...Gi...Gilly...forgive me" For a moment, Molly shed a few tears. Gil was very surprised to see that reaction.
"Huh? Why are you apologizing? You have done nothing wrong to me" Gil asked shocked.
"Of course I did bad things. I put you aside from my life when we entered high school. I wasn't with you when you needed me. I haven't been the "best friend" that I'm supposed to be since we were kids. God, I let Dash put you down for so long! And you know? I feel like sh*t not being with you when your uncle died! I only got to go to his funeral, which I feel was not enough. I….I….I…." That was a hard moment. Molly was cruel to herself, remembering what she did and didn't do. Gil decided to approach slowly and took her hand to calm her down.
"Stop! Don't blame yourself! Stop hurting yourself like that! Look, I admit that it hurt me when you stopped being so close to me. But still I have not kept any negative feelings towards you. Listen, I don't feel any resentment or remorse towards you. And well, if that's not enough, then I'll say the words that will make you feel better: I forgive you" Gil said all of this with a comforting tone of voice.
"Oh…I…I…Thanks, Gilly" Molly smiled at him.
"It was nothing, Molly. I can't be mad at my best friend" The blue-haired guppy said happily.
"Of course….Best friends" She smiled awkwardly. Both teenagers looked shyly into each other's eyes. They smiled at each other but neither had the courage to go far. They were best friends, any move could be risky.
"M…Molly…"
"Y..Yes, Gilly?" The moment would have been sweet and romantic if not for a loud cry.
"AAAAAAHHHHH!" The two teenagers were startled to identify the source of the scream. It was Deema who was running alongside Goby. They both looked terrified and agitated.
"That was close!" Goby said agitated.
"Wh..What happened?!" Molly asked worriedly.
"You are not going to believe this. A car almost crushed us. A huge sandstorm is happening in the city. That makes no sense!" Deema answered very quickly and scaredly.
"(Mmmm a sandstorm in the middle of the city? Sounds like something I should investigate immediately)" Gil thought about it seriously. Unfortunately, it was time together to say goodbye to his friends and invent an excuse to leave them and go investigate using his alter ego "Guys, I'm so sorry but I have to go now. My aunt just texted me and she wants me to come home because of what's going on right now with this sandstorm. I'm sorry!"
"B..But Gilly…." Molly wanted to stop him.
"I´m sorry! Goodbye!" He simply ran to flee the scene quickly. The boy managed to hide in an alley. He made sure that no one was near him and decided to take the suit off of him. It was time to be a hero!
On the other hand, we can see that the city was facing a natural (not so natural) disaster. A sandstorm was sweeping through the city. But that was not a normal phenomenon, the sand was making violent eddies and finally gathered in one area, causing it to take on the physical form of an adult male guppy. He managed to intercept an armored truck from a bank and stopped it. He wanted to take the huge sacks of bills that it carried.
"Hands up sir! You are under arrest!" A couple of police officers threatened him with their firearms pointed at him.
"Don't get in my way" Flint said, bothered. He decided to attack the policemen with his bare hands. They shot Marko, but something weird happened. The bullets didn't hurt him because Flint's body was made of pure sand. He managed to hit and knock them down without much trouble "Hmmm too easy"
"Don't tell me, you must be the sandbox"
"Huh?!" Marko was confused. In front of him our beloved superhero appeared once more "Hmm Spider-Guppy….I should have assumed that you would come" Flint said seriously.
"Well...a bank robber who causes sandstorms isn't supposed to go unpunished" Spider-Guppy answered.
"Listen, I don't want to have problems with you. I just want the money. I don't even wanna hurt nobody" The man said seriously.
"Tell it to the officers and the people you have hurt with your strange power" The masked hero said sarcastically.
"Because they got in my way. And the same will happen to you if you don't leave me alone!" He threatened him. But he noticed that the hero did not think of backing down "So you don't plan to leave either?"
"Not while you're a threat to everyone" Gil said seriously.
"Grrrrr. Leave me alone!" He stretched out his fist and it turned into a big fist of sand and tried to hit Spider-Guppy. Luckily he managed to dodge it in time.
"Woah! Alright, let's play in the sandbox...Sandman!" Spider-Guppy looked at him.
Both started the fight. Spider-Guppy vs. Sandman! It started out as a very complicated battle. Flint Marko, now named Sandman, managed to turn many parts of his body into sand. Which managed to move easily on the battlefield. Also, his shapeshifting ability was useful for avoiding and counterattacking. Spider-Guppy was worried that his melee attacks were ineffective. And the cobwebs didn't help much. In one part of the fight, the hero managed to hit him in the face, leaving a large crater on his cheek. But immediately, the masked man was surprised when the mark of the hit began to regenerate using sand. Marko just looked at him seriously.
"Hmm my turn!" He turned one of his hands into a large sand hammer and attacked the spider hero. The blow managed to send Spider-Guppy flying who crashed into a wall, leaving him injured.
"GRUAHH!" Spider-Guppy slowly got up and continued the fight which was evidently at a disadvantage. He tried to damage him, but for more super strength than he has, Sandman possessed superior resistance and his almost impenetrable body was a great challenge. Sandman managed to hit him with his bare hands and used shapeshifting to change the type of attacks. For example, his hands could turn into hammers, morning stars, and even blades. And those various attacks put Spider-Guppy at a disadvantage. Unfortunately, these attacks left our superhero very weak.
"Hmmm easy. I don't want to do this to you but I know you'll keep getting in my way" Sandman said that before turning his two hands into two big hammers to finish off our hero. Spider-Guppy managed to get up and decided to do something very smart and logical. He opted for a tactical withdrawal. He used his web shooter to escape his opponent. The mutant guppy simply smiled as he saw the masked man run away "Better run away! Because next time you won't end well!"
The Sandman simply fled the scene with the stolen money. Everything indicated that it was the first defeat of Spider-Guppy. He had never faced a subject as powerful as this one. From facing maniacs in technological suits to fighting mutants. Gil decided to hide on the roof to catch his breath. He decided to take off his mask and shook it off because he noticed that his suit was full of sand, as a result of the fight.
"Where do all these guys come from?" Gil asked himself in a rhetorical way. Luckily, his regeneration and resistance ability made the pain bearable and gradually eased. However, our hero's number one priority is to stop the superhuman criminal "Hmmm This enemy is too powerful. Neither my blows nor my cobwebs have been enough. He is literally invulnerable to everything...wait! Invulnerable to ALMOST everything!" He said that while touching a few grains of sand. The boy carefully thought of a plan to stop him. Looks like he came up with something nifty.
It didn't take long for Flint Marko to decide to make another attack. He held up a state bank where he took sacks full of money. Obviously, bank security and the police tried to stop him, but to no avail. His sandy body was immune to bullets. He started to escape without much trouble until he saw someone who was in a building waiting for him.
"Are you going somewhere? I don't think you made a legitimate banking transaction" Spider-Guppy told that joke before shooting his web shooter at him and managed to cover the criminal in a sticky trap "Ha! easy!"
"Oh you think so?" Sandman smirked before he used his shapeshifter power to turn himself into a pool of sand to free himself from the webs and then reverted to his physical form "You're going to be very sorry, spider!"
"Uh Oh!" Gil said in fear before being hit with a huge fist of sand. That blow threw him several meters until he hit a car. He just woke up sore "Ugh! Ugh! Tell me, sandbox….Is it all you have?" He said with a provocative tone of voice.
"Hehehe…This gonna be fun" Saying this, Flint turns his hands into blades and runs straight for Spider-Guppy.
Thanks to his spidery instinct and his agility and speed, he manages to dodge the Sandman's lethal thrusts. He changes the blades for spike balls to crush him, but he manages to dodge the attacks and lures him into a construction zone. The combat begins to intensify when Sandman sees that the area contains a lot of sand. He just smiles evilly and uses his power to absorb the sand and turns into a 3 meter tall muscular monster.
"It was a mistake to bring me here. Now I am much stronger!" Flint said as he tried to crush Spider-Guppy with his bare hands. Well now he is bigger and stronger. Gil managed to dodge it.
"Maybe….but you are also slower" Spider-Guppy smirked under his mask. His plan was working little by little. Taking advantage of his enemy's slowness, the hero managed to reach a hydrant and broke the valve to release a powerful jet of water. And using his super strength, he managed to aim the water jet at Sandman. The force of the water managed to alter the Sandman's physical form, causing the sand on his body to turn to mud. In that unstable form, he tried to move and return to his physical form, but he only managed to turn into a miserable puddle of mudd.
"Nooo! Ughh! Gruaahh! What is this?! Graaahhh!" Marko was screaming as he tried to return to his normal physical form, but his mud body is extremely unstable.
"It is not obvious? Sand plus Water equals Mud. Now, only the final touch remains" Spider-Guppy decided to take two sacks of cement and decided to pour the contents into Sandman's clay body. That made the body begin to harden little by little.
"NOOOOO!-" Sandman yelled furiously before turning into a motionless concrete figure. In this way, the mutant had ceased to be a threat. Spider-Guppy simply left the scene before the police arrived with reinforcements to arrest Marko. They decided to take the cement figure to a special cell that Oscorp was developing for mutants. It's funny how Oscorp develops technology to apprehend criminals with powers. I guess it's an alliance between Oscorp and the Police Department.
With the Sandman defeated and arrested, it was time for Spider-Guppy to go back to being Gil Parker. He supposed that it was too late to go back to his friends. So he decided to return home but not before recovering the hidden cameras that he had around the city to verify if his battle against the sand mutant had been photographed. And in this way, send the photos to his boss. After a long time, he came home a little tired and weak from his fight. Evidently, his aunt was worriedly waiting for him.
"Where were you? I was so worried about you!" Aunt May scolded him softly. She was very concerned.
"Oh….Sorry. I´m so sorry. I was stuck in the center of the city by the emergency of that crazy man of sand. The one that was on the news" Gil told her the truth. At least….a half truth.
"Honey, don't scare me like that. That is totally dangerous. I thought you were with your friends. I was worried when Goby and Molly called me on the phone" May said worriedly.
"Yeah, I was. But I had to break away and hide when he came out. There were many sandstorms through the city" The blue-haired guppy said quickly.
"(sigh) I don't like that you are in such dangerous situations. Lately, very lethal criminals have appeared. I think we are blessed to have our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Guppy to stop them" The old woman said quietly.
"You´re right. So…(yawn) It´s a bit late. I´ll go to bed. Good night, auntie" Gil said fastly.
"But dear…Don't you want something to eat before you go to bed?" She asked.
"Oh no…I´m fine...Have a good night" He said before he entered his bedroom. He was very tired and he quickly lay down on his bed. He checked his cell phone once before sleeping when he noticed the messages and missed calls from his friends Molly, Goby and Deema. They were worried about him leaving them in the middle of the Sandman emergency. He just sighed sadly "(sigh) It just can't be. I lost a unique moment with Molly. Not to mention I'm worrying everyone around me. My friends, my aunt...I would like to clear everything up just by telling you the truth...But...No...I can't do it. Just no one can know my identity" Without much thought, the boy fell asleep. That would be a problem that he would have to deal with frequently. A hero's social life is constantly in jeopardy and Gil couldn't risk anything. Ultimately, it's a matter of responsibility.
Meanwhile, in a high security prison, we can see the powerful Sandman locked in a special cell. It was a cell made of very strong glass. The criminal managed to free himself from the cement after it lost his strength due to the persistence and effort of the Sandman. When he broke free, he tried to hit the glass hard. But it was a special cell for him, so it wouldn't break. He literally felt trapped like snow in a snow globe. After several efforts, everything was useless.
