"Sinbad. Sinbad, wake up." Sinbad slowly opened his eyes. He had placed a few cushions and blankets at the edge of the forest under a big tree and he had fallen in a deep sleep. The cold breeze on his face contrasted with the warmth of the blankets and he could not remember a time where the sleeping conditions were that satisfying. His favorite sorceress approached with a book in her hands. She sat next to him as he sat up, rubbing his eyes in an attempt to get rid of his sleepiness. "I think I found it." Maeve said as Sinbad was evaluating where the sun was. He had been sleeping for a few hours but it only felt like a few minutes. Maeve pointed to one of the pages in her book. "Here, the pied piper spell." Sinbad gave her a puzzled look.
- Did you sleep at all? He asked.
- Yeah, a little, she answered without taking her eyes off her book. This spell is used in black magic to lure children. It puts them in a trance!
- And… What is it for? Sinbad asked with a frown.
- I don't know…
Sinbad sighed. "Well at least we now know that someone using black magic is behind this." Maeve's eyes widened before she turned to look at him. "Do you think it's her?" Sinbad shrugged. She didn't have to say her name. He knew exactly who Maeve was referring to. "You tell me. You might know her better than I do. Frankly, I don't think children are her cup of tea." Maeve nodded.
Elie hugged her daughter tight. "Be careful, my child. I admire your courage as much as it terrifies me." Kai closed her eyes as she tightened the grip around her mother. "I'll be fine, mother. " As she pulled away slowly, Eyof placed a hand on her shoulder. "I won't leave your side. " He assured her. "I'll stay with you. " Maeve volunteered.
The crew settled at the campfire. They could vaguely see Eyolf's house from where they were, but Sinbad couldn't stop himself from staring in the house's direction. "Sinbad, Maeve is fine. " Doubar said in amusement. Firouz and Rongar chuckled. "I am just looking to see if they alert us." argued the captain. The men laughed as Sinbad shook his head.
In Eyolf's house, Kai was laying next to Freyja, trying to calm herself down to find some sleep. Eyolf was sitting on the floor in the doorway of the bedroom. Maeve was sitting a few feet away, in the main room, and Dermott was resting on the bedroom window ledge. "Is Kai sleeping yet?" Maeve asked in a murmur. Eyolf shook his head. Maeve sighed as she let her head rest back on the wall behind her. She was feeling more and more nervous at the perspective of facing her worst enemy. Eyolf observed her with his typical intense gaze, thinking she was just as beautiful as he remembered. He was thankful to share this private moment with her, as it had not been possible since they had arrived in his homeland. After a moment, she noticed Eyolf's gaze and laughed in embarrassment.
-What? She asked in a quiet voice.
- It's nothing. I'm sorry.
- Stop saying you're sorry, she laughed.
- Sorry, he replied involuntarily.
They both chuckled as they suddenly had an impression of déjà vu. "I just think you're very beautiful. " Eyolf simply murmured after a short silence. Maeve was surprised by his bold comment. She tried to divert the conversation. "So is your daughter. " Eyolf smiled and took a look in the bedroom, where Freyja was sleeping next to Kai. "I love her more than words could express." He said. "It has not been easy without her mother. " Maeve stayed silent for a while, inviting him to open up. "Sometimes I wonder if Freyja misses her mother's presence," said Eyolf. "Even if she doesn't know her." Maeve replied with a faith smile that expressed more sadness than joy.
At the campsite, the crew was starting to hear carillons. They worked to stop and return children to their home. Patiently, they waited for Kai to enter that mysterious trance. Around midnight, Kai exited her house. She was closely followed by Eyolf and Maeve. The sorceress waved a hand and a fireball appeared. Rongar nudged Firouz as he noticed the signal. The crew jumped to their feet and ran to catch up with the trio. They followed her in the forest. It wasn't easy to navigate through the darkness but they didn't want to light torches and risk being seen. Every once in a while, someone would trip over a log or a tree root. At one point, Firouz even hit his head on a tree branch. After what seemed an eternity, they reached the edge of a lake. On the other side, they could hear the sound of a waterfall. The sound of the water crushing the surface of the lake seemed even louder in the calm night.
Kai circled the lake, closely followed by her protectors. When they arrived on the other side, they were almost behind the waterfall. Kai stepped into the cold water and disappeared behind the waterfall. Eyolf followed her quickly. The crew gasped as their feet entered the cold water up to the middle of their shins. When they got behind the waterfall, they discovered a cave. Without the moonlight, it was so dark in there that they could not even see their hands. Sinbad led the crew as they were all holding on to each other. After a few steps, they turned a corner and a very dim light was visible at the end of a tunnel. They spotted Eyolf's dark figure and caught up with him. Maeve's body started trembling as she could feel the evil presence ahead of her. She took a deep breath and placed a hand around Eyolf's arm. At that moment, they reached the end of the tunnel and Maeve could see what was the source of light. "I feel something, a familiar voice said. Someone else is coming." Maeve reached out and grabbed Kai's arm, preventing her from moving further. She crouched and slid behind a big rock, bringing the young girl with her. Eyolf joined her and the others hid behind another adjacent rock. "I bet Sinbad and this pesky peasant witch found us." Rumina was standing in front of a rock that had the appearance of a large bath with its hole on top filled with water. Her arms were stretched out above the water as a magic ball of light was moving above the surface of the water. As she was chanting, small lightning strikes were forming in her hands and seemed to feed the light ball.
Eyolf woke his niece up and placed a finger on his lips to tell her to stay quiet. Maeve placed her hands on the top of the rock behind which they were hiding and slowly lifted herself up to see what was going on. At that moment, she heard a man's voice. "Don't worry my dear, nobody will find us here. We are miles away from this sailor's usual waters. " Turok then appeared from behind a big stalagmite. Maeve's heart sank and her knees dropped as the crew looked at each other with dispar. The sorceress turned her back and closed her eyes as she let her head hit the rock behind her. Sinbad clenched his jaw as he witnessed her desperation. He had never felt as much as a failure. He wanted to reach out to her so badly, as an apology for not only failing to kill Rumina but also not preventing Turok from coming back to life. How could this even be possible? He stretched his arm towards Maeve, but Doubar stopped him. There was too much risk of being seen. Sinbad reluctantly dropped his arm as he witnessed à tear running down Maeve's cheek.
