BigSmokeYeet: OOOffff... then you're not gonna like this one either. Thanks to this kind of reviews I know now to prevent this kind of chapters in the future.
Guest: Oh believe me, there's plenty of Hell Felix to come.
TheSlySage: I haven't played Halo and am not that familiar with their mythos. But I run on the idea that Locus and Felix are not Spartans but ODSTs or just normal soldiers. Everyone in Chorus had armors and most of them weren't related to the UNSC. I operate working with RVB lore only and just adding some sparkles of Halo since its a shared universe.
ItsYorkWho: Indeed.
Some asshole 4145: You're gonna smile more when you see what I have planned. Sorry this past chapters only follow team RWBY I promise next one will have Felix retake his spotlight.
Guess: Your wish has been granted!
After that show of power from Mister Arc, team RWBY sprang into action. Yang rocketed towards a trio of Beowolves, her teammates moving as other Grimm turned around the corner. She landed a right hook towards the snout of one of the mutts, and then gave a haymaker against one that was sneaking behind her back.
They dealt with the first bout pretty quickly. Grimm was child-play by now. Yang bashed skulls, Weiss pierced them or froze them with her rapier, Blake… she held her own pretty well despite her tiredness, and Ruby as always was a master with her scythe cleaving through them.
They gathered in front of Mister Arc, and Ruby gave him a thumbs up. "Easy cake."
"For now," Mister Arc said as he motioned to follow them. "This was just the first bout and I don't doubt we'll find more as we scout."
Said and done, the further they went into the city, the more Grimm they fought. And in Yang's opinion, they were more than welcome to meet her fists.
This is just what she needed after being inside the infirmary for so long and then with all the shit that has been pilling on her team during this semester. And that just didn't feet fair! Not when all they did was trying to help the city, help their… teammate.
Her eyes strayed for a moment towards Blake, who used her Shadow to avoid the hit from one of the Grimm she was fighting. Yang gritted her teeth and punched extra hard one of the Beowolves she was fighting, and then as if it was a sandbag she unleashed a barrage of punches on its torso that culminated on an uppercut and then a double hammer to its skull causing it to crack.
As she turned against another three, her thoughts kept straying to her partner's situation. Even if Blake was handling her own against the Grimm, people were a different thing, they would not lash out angrily, they will have technique and weapons on them not to discard the possibility of Semblances. And who knew what sort of things those two weird armored guys will have in them.
And yet she stubbornly refused help, she kept distancing herself from them, and yet she asked them to come here because of her 'research.' Yang had been seconds way from telling her off back at Beacon, but when professor Ozpin all but gave them a giftwrapped opportunity to make things right, they just couldn't say no…
Ugh, and then there was their assigned Huntsman. He didn't made a first good impression on Yang, scolding her sister like that. But then again, she supposed, Ruby had it coming by bringing Zwei—like, come on Rubes!
But the way he called her out like that didn't settle well with Yang. And she will admit, she had her doubts since he was Jaune's father. She didn't have anything against the missing boy, and if she did she wasn't as vocal with it as Weiss was… but he faked his records when all of them trained hard their whole lives to get where they are. He could have gotten himself killed.
So, the shock of seeing his father destroy a Grimm's skull in a single blow was mindboggling.
So yeah, in a nutshell, killing this Grimm was pretty therapeutic for her. Even if, by if… yeah she was starting to feel out of breath after so many rounds. This felt like a boss rush from one of Ruby's games.
"Need assistance?" She turned to see Mister Arc with approaching her with a water canteen on his hand.
"No, I got this," She brushed him off, dodging a Grimm that came in her direction and giving it a series of jabs accompanied by shots from Ember Celica that put an end to it.
Nicholas snorted and took a swing from the canteen. "I can tell you're not exactly fond of me. After the scolding I gave Ruby."
Yang flinched and lowered her arms. "Look, I get Ruby did a stupid thing. But you didn't have to be that harsh on her."
"In this kind of environment stupid either gives results or gives death," Nicholas said firmly, then he sighed and stroked his beard. "But I guess I could have tried to go a tad easier on her. Maybe then the Grimm wouldn't have found us no sooner than we put a foot here."
Well, at least he was apologetic about it. It was a start, she supposed.
As Yang looked at Nicholas her eyes widened and a bulb lit up on her head. "So… Mister Arc…?"
"Yes?" He asked crossing his arms.
"You studied with my dad, right?" She asked, treading this carefully. "So, you knew the whole team, right?"
He snorted. "Who didn't knew about Team STRQ back in the day? They were a group of first years who just made themselves know," he gave her a knowing look. "Kind of like you girls."
She chuckled awkwardly. "Yeah…" She had to get back on track. "So… did you know my mother… Raven?"
"Raven?" He blinked then stroke his beard in thought. "Oh, Raven… What do you want to know."
Yang blinked. H-He… He could actually talk about her? "E-Everything!"
"Well… She was always a loner. Team activity Summer did, team activity Raven walked away from. She didn't have any sort of sportsmanship, always belittling her opponents when she beat them. The only one who seemed to get through her was Tai. It's all superficial, as you can see her and I were never close."
Well… that was not as helpful as she thought. If anything, it was a bit discouraging hearing her do those sorts of things.
"Tell me something Yang," She looked back at him as he gave her a questioning look. "What do you think makes a Huntress?"
"Huh?"
"Why did you choose to be Huntress?" He asked. "It wasn't just because of a family thing, right?"
"Well, partially," She mulled it over after saying that. "But it's also because I'm a thrill-seeker. I want to travel around the world and get wrapped up in as many crazy adventures as I can. And if I help people along the way, then that's even better. It's a win-win, y'know?"
He hummed and nodded in acknowledgment. "I see," He looked around and gestured to a building. "This area has been cleared, go there as that will be our camping spot. I'll gather your teammates."
"Right…" He left and Yang did as told.
'Okay, maybe he isn't not that bad,' She thought to herself. 'Yet what was that question about… I didn't said anything wrong, right?'
Weiss impaled her last opponent and sighed while wiping sweat from her brow.
"Miss Schnee," She turned to see Mister Arc approaching with a water canteen. "Do you need some refreshment?"
She looked over and nodded. "Yes, thank you."
He handed her the canteen and she drank gracefully from it. She had been wrong in judging the man just on the impression his son left on her, it was the same as people judging her from her father's… less than moral choices in her company. The man proved to be a capable Huntsman with a good head on his shoulders and a perfect gentleman to boot.
"This might be bold for me to say, but I can tell you were the most skeptical about me out of the whole team, right?" Mister Arc declared.
Weiss almost choked on the water, but managed to hold it together before giving the Huntsman a shocked look. "W-What?"
"I could tell by the way you were looking at me," He said. "And your tone when talking about my son was clearly one trying to not offend me."
Weiss huffed and gave the canteen back to the man. "I do not wish to speak ill of those who are not present," she said. 'Not again after how things turned out with Pyrrha's team.'
"He did something to offend you, personally?" He asked casually, taking a sip from his canteen. Ugh, now that she thinks about it that pretty unhygienic to drink from the same vase.
But getting back to the point…
"He was… pretty pushy about dating me," She admitted. "That and how insulting it felt that he cheated his way into the academy, when all of us had to work hard for our positions in them."
'Some more than others…' She almost touched her scar at the reminder.
"I see… That confidence advice I gave him certainly went the wrong way," he said with a self-deprecating chuckle. "As his father I apologize for the inconveniences."
She sighed. "It's okay, mister Arc. Despite my personal opinion on him, I do hope he is just missing and that you find him one day," she said.
"Thank you," He responded with a kind smile. "Now, may I ask something personal if you don't mind."
A weird request, but she supposed it was a harmless one. "Of course."
"What is your drive to be a Huntress, miss Schnee?" Mister Arc said. "Or why choose to come to Vale instead of Atlas… got tired of the cold?"
The question was certainly out of the blue, and the small joke went over her head. She looked at Myrtenaster in contemplation before answering. "As a Schnee I have a legacy of honor to uphold. Once I realized I was capable of fighting, there was no longer a question of what I would do with my life. It was my duty."
Mister Arc hums in response before giving a nod. "I told Yang this before but our camping place is that way," he said, pointing to a specific building. "Grimm have been cleared out, take a rest."
His lack of response made Weiss feel confused and slightly disappointed. Was that not good enough? Her reasons were noble, her grandfather was a Huntsman before creating the SDC, and with her mother… not being adequate to follow on that legacy, her sister and her would certainly make up for it. And she will put the company in the right path again.
She clicks her teeth and palms her face. "But I didn't tell him that," She chastised herself. "I just told him that I wanted to keep its legacy… and right now its legacy was not on a bright light."
Well, that would soon change. One day she will be ready for it. That was what she was going to say if he asked again.
Blake growled as she dodged the swipe of a Grimm and stumbled back when another nailed her on the back. Damnit! Why there were so many! These stupid rejects of natures were getting in the way of their mission!
She jumped as she made a shadow to trick them and launched Gambol Shroud, wrapping it around the neck of one of them. She landed in a crouch and tugged her at her and used her sheath to chop its head away.
The remaining one jumped at her, she left a shadow behind to dodge, but as she stepped away she tripped and fell to the floor. The Grimm loomed over her and she tried to stand up again and fight it off. But felt her arms trembled and her knees failing.
'Why… No, not like this!' She thought in distress as the Grimm brandished its claws and Blake closed her eyes. Many, oh so many regrets pooling on her stomach.
Then the Grimm stopped, it crumpled down like a puppet with broken strings and she looked up to see Mister Arc with his axe out. He gave her a disappointed look and shook his head.
"Miss Belladona, what have you done to yourself?" He asked in an admonishing tone.
Despite having being in the face of death a few seconds ago. Blake felt irritation at the man's tone. "I'm fine."
"You are clearly not," Nicholas said, crossing his arms. "If a single Grimm causes you trouble, how do you expect to fight the Fang?"
"I just will!" She had to. She was the only one who could do this, to stop their plans. "I already had this discussion with Yang, you will not convince me otherwise. It's thanks to my research that I knew this place was important!"
"Useless in the end since Ozpin was going to sent you here regardless. A decision I am starting to question," He pointed out, much to her annoyance. "Do you think you'll be of help to your team in this condition."
She turned around and gave him a hiss. "As if you'd actually know what's at stake here!"
"You're not answering my question," He fired back.
Blake just gritted her teeth and whirled around, refusing to listen to this man. Who was he to question her motives? She had to fix the White Fang's mess she has to!
"With this stubbornness, I wonder why you decided to be a Huntress, or what do you plan to do when you become one," He questioned coldly.
She turns around to glare at him. "Why?! Because there's too much wrong in this world to just stand by and do nothing!" She answers. "Inequality, corruption... Someone has to stop it."
Nicholas gives her an unimpressed look. "Okay… How?"
She opens her mouth to respond but then she stops. How… She was going to… To… To put an end to it all, she was going to be… To…
She looks down at her feet as the thoughts swirl in her mind. How was she going to put a stop to all of it? The pacific White Fang didn't bring results, and the current one was working with a renewed criminal… So what path was she supposed to take.
Nicholas hummed and patted her shoulder. "Got over there, that's where our camp is. Think over it while you're at it."
With that, he leaves, leaving Blake alone with her thoughts.
"ZWEI! I CHOOSE YOU!"
"Bark, bark!"
"Use Cannon Ball!"
Zwei like the good boy he was, curled himself into a ball and jumped up just as Ruby aimed the nuzzle of Crescent Rose at him, loaded with a Gravity Dust ammunition—Thanks Weiss!—and with a shot the dog was propelled towards an incoming Beowulf, striking him straight into his face.
Ruby skidded back due to the blowback of the shot, yet she smiled in satisfaction seeing the beast fall down. She spun Crescent Rose and aimed it at the floor before firing another round of gravity that sent her flying high above the street. She changed cartridge mid-air and compacted her baby into its rifle form, firing a flame bullet at the head of the Grimm effectively piercing its head and making its body vanish.
She landed in a crouch on the floor and fist pumped the air. "Alright! Ruby and Zwei: A million, Grimm: Zero!"
"Arf! Arf!" Zwei waggled his tail happily as he ran circles around Ruby before leaping into her arms.
"Well, that's not something you see every day," Ruby tensed and looked back to see Mister Arc approaching.
"O-Oh, Mister Arc. I-I know that's not something most people would do to their dogs," Ruby stammered as she looked down at Zwei. "B-But I…"
"Ruby," She clamped her mouth when he spoke and rose a hand. "Does the dog… have a Semblance?"
Ruby looked at him in bewilderment for a moment before looking down at Zwei. "He does, he… Can withstand blunt hits. We learned when he jumped over the railing of the stairs and hit his back without a single chip to his aura. But… blades can hurt him as dad learned when he almost cut him up cutting his air."
Zwei whimpered and flattened his ears to his skull remembering that experience.
Mister Arc hummed. "Well, with a Semblance like that he's already more useful than most Huntsman I worked with," he reached out and petted Zwei's head, making him whine happily. "I guess I was too quick to judge, and too hard on the scolding."
Ruby smiled and fidgeted. "You were right though. I didn't have any plan bringing Zwei, I just thought it would be fun for to bring him during my first mission as a Huntress…"
Zwei snuggled into her arms to offer her comfort, making her smile a little.
"Well seeing as we were both wrong in our approaches, how about we start again, huh?" Mister Arc said with a smile, and Ruby felt a weight being lifted from her shoulders.
"Sure!" She said, more than happy to do so, and feeling relief that their assigned Huntsman didn't hated her.
"Good, now follow me," he said. "We'll set a perimeter around the camp where your teammates are, make sure there are no more Grimm lurking around."
With a skip to her step, Ruby followed the Huntsman. The day has been a rollercoaster of emotions from her, happy because they got Zwei, excited for the mission, tense for the mission, happy to be with a Huntsman she was acquaintance with, sad that said acquaintance called her out like that, and now excited again to be doing scouting for her teammates' sake.
When they turned around a corner, Ruby stopped and gasped at what she saw. "Woah… What are those?!"
She knew what they were: Grimm. A pack of giant Grimm were walking past the wilderness surrounding the mountain. Yet there were so many and looked somewhat… peaceful in their stride that Ruby couldn't help but feel marveled at them.
"Grimm, or more specifically, Goliaths," Mister Arc explained as he crossed his arms. "One of the oldest and strongest Grimm in recorded history."
Ruby's eyes sparkled and she loaded ammunition in Crescent Rose and took aim. "Let's kill 'em!"
"Down girl," Mister Arc said, putting a hand on her weapon and lowering it. "Nothing short of a whole team of Huntsmen, or heavy artillery could take down so many of them."
Ruby lowered her weapon and frowned. "But what if they attack us?"
"As crazy as it sounds, some Grimm do not attack humans at first sight," The Huntsman explained. "Some of them who have lived for so long start learning, and 'know' better. Know that if they attack a group of humans, more will come. They learned that our greatest weapon is not our blades or guns, or even our knowledge, its our adaptability and will to keep fighting. Kill one human and attack the borders, and more of us will appear and eventually kill them."
Ruby looked back at the Grimm and noticed one of the Goliaths staring at them. Then it just turned around and continued on its way with the rest of the pack.
"Of course, there have been attempts to just finish them off… but the surviving rate is less than twenty percent," The man's words cause Ruby to stiffen and turn her attention back to him. "So it's better to avoid unnecessary bloodshed with this and only act in retaliation."
"Then… why are they close to the city?" Ruby asked. "If they 'think' they won't gain anything from it?"
"They're waiting for the chance where we'll be vulnerable," Nicholas responds. "Reason why there's so many propaganda to ensure happiness."
Ruby hummed, maybe she should have paid more attention to Professor Oobleck's classes back in Beacon. She'll try better from now on, if only to learn about other classes of Grimm.
"Mister Arc?"
"Hmm?"
"I was wondering…" She started awkwardly. "Why ummm…"
Mister Arc looked at her and raised an eyebrow. "Is it that embarrassing of a question."
"I just don't want to upset you again."
"I promise I won't," he said with a kind smile.
"Why did you… become a Huntsman?" She finally blurted out.
"Well," He says as he starts to walk away from the border to continue their scouting. "Two reasons. I don't know if Jaune told you but… the Arcs go way back as Huntsman, from the times of the Great War, so it was a tradition. But the second reason is because I didn't want people to get hurt, and if I could do something about it… then why not?"
That last words were said with melancholy and Ruby noticed how his shoulders stiffened and his fists clenched. She moved to look at him, but he already had put on a serious, neutral face. "Mister Arc…?"
"It's… nothing," He said giving her a smile, though even she could tell it was fake. "Let's go, your sister and friends are waiting."
Even if he didn't say it, even if he didn't elaborate. Ruby had a pretty good guess of what he was thinking about moments ago, or rather of whom…
'Jaune…'
When they arrived to the meeting spot, they were greeted by the sight of a warm campfire and her friends preparing the rations for dinner. "Good, this shall do for the night," Nicholas said in satisfaction and giving them a proud smile. "Good job everyone."
"Ah, so warm…" Ruby said in delight as she sat in front of the fire. "It was starting to get really cold outside."
"Okay, let's enjoy dinner and go to bed," Mister Arc said, setting down. "Tomorrow the search continues and more thoroughly than before, we'll comb the entire city if needed."
The girls all nodded and Ruby felt giddy at all the terms their Huntsman used. Make it all sound so much more professional and amazing, like something out of the many movies she watched!
"Any volunteers for the watch or should I take it?" He asked.
"Yo," Ruby raised her hand. First watch was awesome, since no one would wake her up later on.
"Good, that's the spirit," Mister Arc said. "I'll keep scouting and be back in a moment, watch my back and contact me if you see anything abnormal."
"Okay!" She replied happily as the man left the building with a pack of food, while she jumped back to her feet and went to her post.
"Hey, Rubes?" Yang's voice stopped her in her tracks. She turned to her sister with a questioning 'Hm?' "Did he asked you… why you choose to become a Huntress?"
"Errr… No, not really," she said, as she remembered her patrol with the man. "Actually, I asked him about it. Why?"
"Umm… Nothing just curious," Yang brushed off and gave her a light pat on the head. "Go out there and tell us if you see something."
"Will do!" She said as she continued her way to her spot. Yet Yang's question and attitude left her a bit confused. "Weird…"
She sat down by a vacant windowsill of the room adjacent where her friends were getting ready to sleep. Zwei skipped next to her and nuzzled next to her. Ruby giggled and pet his head.
"I get the feeling tomorrow's going to be a crazy day, Zwei…"
The night however, wasn't as interesting. Aside from the passing Grimm who would look at their position but then continue to walk, or those who did came close but a single shot put dealt with them, nothing happened at all. Even Mister Arc came back after securing the perimeter and said he didn't found anything interesting.
So Yang came up to her and took her place to sleep. And Ruby was more than pleasantly surprised when she saw BLAKE of all people sleeping soundly.
"Is she…" Ruby asked.
"Do not wake her," Yang warned as she put a hand on her shoulder. "I think… that phase is finally over."
With that one good news, Ruby took her place in her sleeping bag and prepared herself to sleep. Hoping the rest of the day when the sun comes out would be more fruitful.
Yet it seemed a certain little fella that she brought along had other plans. Interrupting the blissful sleep she's been having, and ruining the whole reason she took the first watch.
Zwei licked her face and stood up, walking in small circles around her. "Zwei… is late," she yawned and whine at the same time. "Go back to bed…"
Sadly for her, he didn't obey. Instead ran out of the building, making Ruby sat up alerted. "Zwei!" She hissed.
She looked around, Yang was taking guard, and both Weiss and Blake were asleep. And she didn't want to interrupt them—specially Blake's sleep . So, with a groan, she sat up and grabbed her baby to chase after her dog.
She walked out of the building and ducked behind corner after corner to make sure Grimm didn't detect her. Not out of fear, or even caution, but because her gunfire and attacks and their roaring would alert her teammates and interrupt their sleep.
"Zwei!" She called in a hushed tone. "Zwei come back here!" She should have brought her whistle… Would that have an effect in Blake? Questions for later.
"Hey, where did this dog come from?"
Ruby tensed as she heard an unfamiliar voice from around the corner of one of the buildings. She pressed herself against a wall and peeked, her eyes widening and her heartbeat fastening as she saw two people, one of them holding her dog by the back of his neck.
Two White Fang grunts had her dog.
Screw caution, no one messes with her boy!
"Hey!" She said, stepping out from her hiding spot and unsheathing Crescent Rose. "Let my dog go!"
"A human?!" The one who wasn't holding Zwei said as he aimed his—totally normal and lame—gun at her. "This place is supposed to be desert!"
"Hell should I know!" The one holding Zwei said. "And who brings her pet to this place?! Super irresponsible, dude…"
Ruby huffed in annoyance at being scolded by that again, and by the bad guys no less! She aimed the nuzzle of Crescent Rose at them and loaded a round of lightning Dust. "Release him right now or—Agh!"
An arm wrapped around her neck and another covered her mouth, she dropped Crescent Rose out of reflex as a voice sneered at her. "Or what?"
Her eyes widened as her eyes caught who caught her, someone dressed exactly as the other two. 'There was another one…!'
"Red cape, big scythe…" The man holding her said looking at her. "This is one of the chicks that has given Torchwick so much trouble."
"Weren't they arrested?"
"They're human. They were let go with nothing but a warning…" The two members with Zwei glowered at her.
"Bark bark!" Zwei barked at them angrily, making the grunt holding him glare at him.
"Be quiet mutt!" The grunt growled and pointing angrily at him. This cost him a bite on the finger. "Owch! You little!" He got ready to strike.
Ruby bit her captor's hand, making him release her mouth, unfortunately the grip on her neck didn't lessen. "Leave Zwei alone!"
The grunts stopped, and the one holding her sneered. "You're lucky I'm a dog's person. Drop him. But make sure it doesn't follow."
The other grunt nodded and still struck Zwei across the face, sending him crashing to the floor with a whimper.
"Zwei!" Ruby said, in tears.
"Relax, he's just taking a nap," The partner of the dog-captor said.
"Now," The one holding her said, tightening his hold and making her supply of oxygen being caught. "You have explaining to do, young lady."
She felt her vision grow black before knowing no more.
She didn't knew for how long she was unconscious, but by the time her eyes opened again she felt herself held by the arms and dragged. She looked around and noticed that they were in the city, but something was… different… The sky wasn't a sky at all, it was ceiling made of rock. Yet there were buildings and streets around them.
She saw a train which was being loaded with… were those bombs…? Yep, they were bombs. And Atlesian Paladins grabbing and loading crates into it as well.
This must be their base, but… where was it? Will the others find her? She… really shouldn't have brought Zwei…
One of the grunts spoke, and just the sound of his voice forced Ruby to close her eyes and fight a headache. "Hey, boss? You might want to see this."
Another voice, a really familiar voice, responded. "Is it good or bad, Perry? Because let me tell ya, I have had a day…"
"Ummm… Is a little girl?"
She's not that little… she drinks milk!
The voice spoke again. "Ohhh, that'd be bad…"
Heavy footsteps marched towards her. Her head was grabbed and she was met face to face with one of the people wearing the armors. The same one who had stabbed her sister…
"The hell are you doing here?!" He demanded to know.
She could only stare at him with nervousness and fear.
