Chapter 8: Rumble in the Jungle, Part 1
Redwood Forest, California, USA
Everyone in the area stood watching in horror as the Bigfoot in front of them healed its wounds and Altered itself with such casual ease. The hunters started to grow uneasy. They expected hunting Bigfoot to be difficult, but never did they think it would be outright impossible!
"Be honored, humans!" the Bigfoot growled, as he grabbed the sword in his leg and ripped it out, tossing it aside. "None before you have seen my people draw upon the Great Changing's power before, and you shall be the last!" With a loud, bestial snarl, the Sasquatch roared and immediately surged forward with speeds incomprehensible for most of the humans present. He appeared in between a large group and sent ten of them flying with a single swipe. Blood spurted from their wounds as they screamed in pain. The Sasquatch swung his other arm at more, but Axel was instantly there to block the swipe.
The Bigfoot growled. "Not this time!" he roared and pushed Axel away. The Gladiator grunted as he skidded across the ground, knocking several hunters down, but the Bigfoot was on him in an instant, his muscles on its arm growing to impossible proportions. With a wild swing and a loud roar, the towering behemoth slammed his fist into Axel's stomach. The hound of Tempus exclaimed in pain, spittle flying out of his mouth as he was sent barreling into the house they had fortified. He hit the roof and sailed through it with little trouble and continued for a few more feet.
The Bigfoot then stomped on the ground, breaking it, leading some hunters to be crushed by the rocks. He spun to claw the torsos of more hunters, but his own chest instantly was split open with a rush of wind and a sharp ringing. He roared in pain and looked at his attacker. Vesper didn't allow him time to recover as he rapidly slashed at the Sasquatch's torso, each swing whistling through the air, as the accompanying displacement of air made the Cryptid stumble backwards. Each cut hit its target, but they only made shallow cuts.
Bigfoot snarled and quickly healed himself. Vesper frowned and ran his fingers down his blade, charging it with lightning. However, the massive simian was ready and vanished as the Scholar thrust his sword forward. Vesper gasped in realization as Bigfoot appeared behind him and grabbed his head. Vesper grunted as his head was squeezed, but Jaune, having retrieved his sword, quickly came to his rescue, and slashed Crocea Mors against the Bigfoot's fingers, using Aura Amp to increase its cutting power.
The Sasquatch roared in anger as the blade sliced into two of its digits, but he quickly hardened his skin, forcibly stopping the blade short of removing his fingers. He swung his other fist at Jaune's face, but Jaune, in an act of quick thinking, flooded his face with Aura and amped it up as high as he could. The fist connected with a massive distortion of air, but Jaune didn't move. Bigfoot narrowed his eyes at the human before him before he reared back and slammed his fist harder into the lesser being's face.
Again, Jaune didn't move. However, Jaune was forced to grit his teeth. 'Dammit! He's getting stronger!' he thought. 'I need to think of something fast!' The Bigfoot wound up another hit, making Jaune desperately reinforces his Aura with Aura Amp. The fist connected but was deflected. The Bigfoot stared at Jaune in confusion.
Before the Cryptid could do anything else, Magni came up behind Bigfoot, holding an origami figure. With a spark of energy, he threw the figure at Bigfoot, and the origami figure grew until it was a dragon the size of the redwoods. The Bigfoot growled as it dropped Vesper and removed Jaune's sword from his hand. He then turned and grabbed the dragon's fangs, halting its movements. "You're through!" Magni shouted and snapped his fingers.
"No!" With a surprising maneuver, Bigfoot spun the jaw away from himself, aiming it high as flames spewed out of the maw. Then with a show of strength, he ripped the dragon's jaw off! Magni watched this in shock as the Sasquatch rushed him. He tried to defend, but Bigfoot went low and grabbed his leg, lifting him upside down. "This farce must end!" he shouted and squeezed hard.
Magni screamed in pain as his femur and tibia were brutally crushed by the monstrous strength. "Magni!" Tempus screamed and rushed to assist. However, Bigfoot spun and threw screaming Magni away from the village, far into the woods. The simian scoffed and turned to face them, only to feel someone grab him by the fur and spin him around.
Axel stood before him, growling angrily. His face mask was up, and the hard light dog ears shined atop his head. "You just made a big mistake, pal!" he snarled and slammed his fist into the Bigfoot's gut. He gasped out in surprise and pain, but he didn't have time to retaliate as Axel threw three more punches to his chest, each rising slightly until Axel lashed out with a brutal uppercut, causing the Cryptid to see stars and some teeth to be dislodged.
The simian gritted his teeth. 'His attacks are getting stronger!' he thought. 'How is this possible?!' With snarl, he intercepted a kick from Axel and threw him into the lake.
"Whoa!" the demihuman cried as he broke water and sunk beneath the waves.
The hunters, now boldened by Tempus's actions, started to surround the Bigfoot. Josiah led his gang forward, Crescent Rose held in front of him, as his men opened fired. The Sasquatch hardened his skin to defend against the bullets and roared at the group. He charged forward, easily throwing Valentine into a house with a single swing of his arm as he trampled over the others. The ones to the sides tried to fire on the Bigfoot, but he simply held out his sharpened claws and gashed them deeply.
Mark and his friends were next in the line of fire, but unlike the Valentine gang, they had a strategy in mind. Mark distracted the Squatch with rapid fire pistol shots to its face. Annoyed, it turned to the man with a snarl and tried to attack him, but it was thrown off balance when Wade fired a sniper round into his eye. The Bigfoot roared in pain as his eye was destroyed, and blood poured from the wound. Jack and Bob ran up and opened fired on the Cryptid's face, and while Jack's bullets only bounced off, some of the buckshot from Bob's shotgun broke through the Bigfoot's skin, making him roar in anger.
Glaring at the group of four, the Bigfoot ducked under another shotgun blast and punched Bob in the leg, making him cry out as he fell. Then, the Bigfoot launched himself forward, landing a solid hit to Wade's chest. The tall man gasped in pain as he was sent flying away as Bigfoot spun swiped at the approaching Mark. Mark screamed in fright as he ducked, which was lucky as it allowed him to avoid a fatal blow, but he wasn't fast enough and got clawed in the face. Jack rushed to his aid, but Bigfoot responded by punching him in the shoulder. Jack cried out in pain as he was thrown backwards.
Altare closed in on the Sasquatch and took aim but was forced to dodge a swipe at his head. Suddenly, his phone rang. Biting back a curse, he jumped away from the fight and answered. "Hello?!"
{Raguuuuussss!} came a loud cry from the other end.
"Kobo?!" Altare's eyes widened as he stared at his phone in shock. His eyes were immediately drawn to the Bigfoot, who jumped forward to punch him. He quickly dodged it. "I'm kind of busy at the moment!" He yelped as he weaved another swipe. "What do you want?!"
{I want to play Valo!} the Hololive Idol of Indonesia, Kobo Kanaeru, shouted at him. The Guild leader yelped as he jumped away from a hunter who started running towards the Bigfoot.
"Kobo, I'm kind of busy at the moment!" Altare told her, sidestepping a hunter that was thrown at him. "Can I get a rain check-Agh!" he cried as he ducked under a dismembered hunter tossed his way.
{Nnnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooooo!} Kobo screamed as Altare was forced to dodge several more strikes from the Bigfoot. {Raguuussss!} Altare bent at the waist to dodge a haymaker to his head as Kobo dissolved into a rapid-fire Indonesian rant.
Forced to sloppily deflect a swing at his head, Altare again shouted into the phone, "Kobo! Can we do this another time?!" He cursed as he jumped away from the Cryptid.
Kobo was still complaining. {…Kamu selalu melakukan ini padaku, Ragus! Anda selalu membatalkan, mengatakan Anda sedang sibuk!} Altare ducked under a hail of gunfire from the remnants of the Valentine's gang, who finally decided to rejoin the fight.
"Kobo! This is so not the time!" Altare hissed.
{But I wanna play Valoooo!} she whined. Altare quickly opened his video call and pointed the camera at the Bigfoot.
"KOBO! I'M BUS-SSSYYYYYYYYY!" Altare shouted, but he was cut off when he was grabbed at the waist and thrown into a tree, making him groan in pain.
Kobo huffed. {Ok, fiinnee! Valo later! Byyyyeeeee!} The line went dead, and Altare groaned in relief. However, that changed when a large claw grabbed him by the collar and hefted him into the air. The Bigfoot growled in his face and tried to stab Altare. Vesper and Jaune tried to rush and save him, but the cryptid swung the Guild leader around and knocked them to the side. They cried out in surprise as they landed hard on their sides.
Axel returned from his dip in the lake and tried to punch the Bigfoot, only for the beast to throw Altare in the way, forcing Axel to hiss and redirect his hit, only to be kicked into the house again. Mark and his friends returned to the fray, only to be thrown to the side by the Bigfoot swinging Altare around.
"Enough of this!" the Sasquatch roared and started squeezing Altare by the neck, making him choke. "Die, worm!"
Suddenly, before he could pop the human's head off, he froze. A dark, malevolent presence paralyzed him in place as the blue haired human glared at him. He felt his muscles spasm uncontrollably until he felt something hit the side of his face and send him spiraling to the ground. Altare fell to the ground, gasping for breath. He gripped his neck as he coughed when a loud roar made him look up. He gasped.
"Another one?!" he heard Axel shout as another Bigfoot, this one a lighter brown than the one they were fighting, let out another roar and charged the darker one.
The dark furred one snarled. "Of course, it would be you to show up!" He Altered his arms, increasing their muscle mass, and charged the light furred Bigfoot. The second Sasquatch glowed a dull gold and suddenly vanished, reappearing as he grabbed the dark furred Bigfoot at the waist and slammed him into the ground, making a massive crater. The dark one snarled and slammed his claws into the light one's head. It snarled in pain as the dark one returned to his feet and threw the light one into a house.
The light one flipped back to its feet, but the dark one charged it and rammed it through to the other side of the house. The dark one followed after the light one, and the two retreated further into the darkness of the woods. The sounds of battle faded quickly, but the forest was a still quiet, nothing, not even the bugs, made a sound.
Altare quickly regained his breath and returned to his feet. Axel, Vesper, and Jaune joined his side a moment later. "Well, this just a lot more complicated!" Axel said bluntly, stating the obvious.
"Two Sasquatches. It was lucky that they seem more interested in each other," Vesper concluded. The other three nodded and looked around the area. Several hunters were now either dead or severely injured. Jaune gritted his teeth as he noticed Josiah getting fished out of the house he had been thrown into.
"Hey guys!" The Tempus Guild turned to see Mark and his friends run up to them with varying injuries. "You boys doing ok?"
"About as well as can be expected," Altare mumbled, rubbing his neck again.
"I want that fucker found!" they heard Josiah scream.
"Sir! There's two of them now!" one of his men protested.
"Then find both! Two Bigfoots means double the reward!" Valentine retorted. He waved Crescent Rose at the man and said, "Take a squad out there and find them!"
"Yes sir!" several men shouted and rushed into the darkness.
"We can't let Valentine win! After them!" a hunter shouted, causing a few others to shout in agreement.
"Hey, wait!" Jaune tried, but more people rushed out of the village. "Dammit!" He turned to glare at Josiah, who ran off into the woods with more of his men.
"He's going to get his men killed out there!" Vesper growled. "This is getting worse by the minute!"
"Yeah," Altare groaned. "With a second Squatch in the area, we now have a bloodbath waiting to happen!"
"What's the plan, Leader?" Axel asked.
"We need to regroup, and fast," Altare said. "I hate to follow their poor example, but we need to cover as much ground as we can and get the hunters back. So, we're going to have to split up and hope like hell we reach the groups before a Bigfoot finds us. Axel, you go find Magni. You're the strongest among us and have the best chance of surviving a Sasquatch attack solo. Ves, Jaune, and I will gather the hunters, hopefully we can catch them before they get too far. We need safety in numbers."
"And add that to the black furred Bigfoot seems to be searching for some ruins, running off in the woods is a bad idea, especially since he wants blood for it," Vesper added.
"Right. They're now open targets. Best to get everyone back here," Altare agreed.
"What do you want us to do?" Mark asked, gesturing to him and his friends. The Tempus leader turned to them.
"See what you can salvage here," he told them. "Weapons, medicine, the whole nine yards. Tend to the wounded and get them in our fortified house over there." He gestured to the afore mentioned house. A portion of the roof caved in more. "…Or maybe find another one to hunker down in."
Mark gave him a thumbs up. "Got ya!" He turned to his friends and said, "Let's go guys!"
"Good luck out there!" Jack called out as the four moved to their new objective. Altare turned to his teammates.
"We best get moving too. It's still dark out, and we've got a lot of people to corral," Altare told them.
"Right! I'll go get Mags! Be right back!" Axel told him as he raced off into the night.
"I'm going after Valentine!" Jaune told him and started walking, but he was stopped by Altare.
"I don't think that's a good idea," the Hero commented.
"He has something that doesn't belong to him, and I intend to get it back!" Jaune told him.
"The scythe, right? I'll take care of it, trust me," Altare promised. "As bad as it is to admit, we can't lose Josiah. He commands the most people here, and without him, the others won't work with us. If you go to find him-"
"It's likely to end bad," Jaune finished for him. He cursed. "I hate it, but you're right. But I…I can't let him keep Crescent Rose. It belongs to Ruby."
"You let me worry about the scythe," Altare said. "But we're burning moonlight. We got people to save! Let's go, boys!"
"Right!" Vesper and Jaune nodded, and the three quickly ran in opposite directions, each hoping to reach the hunting parties before it was too late.
"Gah! Damn that primate!" Magni growled as he injected his leg with a potion of his own creation. Slowly, the pain in his leg began to increase as his limb repaired itself. "Even with nearly half of my Elixir and a dose of my Hyper Regen Formula, my leg still won't be fully healed for at least another hour! Ugh! Shit!"
He growled to himself and pulled out an oval flask filled with a reddish liquid. Pulling the cork, he took a sip. "I guess it can't be helped," he sighed. "Besides, probably best to preserve some healing for the others, just in case." He took another sip and sighed again. "Ah, good ole Copium. What would I ever do without you?"
Distantly, he started hearing something deep within the silent woods. He quieted down and listened intently. Sure enough, he heard the faint sounds of screaming, people in agony. "Sounds like the hunters left the safety of the village and tried hunting a Squatch in the dead of night," he grumbled. "Idiots!" He sighed and quickly transmuted a stick into a crutch. "This just keeps getting better and better!"
Suddenly, he heard a growl behind him. He turned, and his eyes widened when he saw a brown bear roaring at him! "Oh, come on!" he whined.
He growled in anger as he stomped on the head of another foolish human. He was running out of time. He had to find the alter! Thankfully, he was able to incapacitate Rowraka for a while, which gave him a moment's respite.
Now that he thought about it, Rowraka hunting him was quite fortuitous. His death would accelerate and further stabilize the ritual. Yes. His intervention was unforeseen but welcomed.
He scoffed at the dead humans around him and started to walk away from the area when he felt an odd hum in the area. His eyes widened as he turned to his right and ran through the trees. He quickly found himself in a small clearing with a ring of large stones erected in a circle atop a small incline. His mouth split into a savage grin.
"Fortune is smiling upon me this night!" he snarled gleefully as he walked up to the alter.
An: Part 1 is complete! I hope everyone enjoyed it, especially the Kobo call to Altare! I had fun with that!
And as for the light furred Bigfoot's name, I kind of just thought up a name based off the Wookies, so I apologize if it's terrible. If anyone has a better name, please let me know! Next chapter will finish up Jaune's adventure, as well as introduce some new mysteries and a special cameo! 'Till next time!
