Chapter 2: Hunting Trip

Corvus had never been on a hunting trip before, most of his time was usually spent helping people out around the camp or training with Bruno or his mother, but he was happy that he was getting the opportunity to now. Bruno, a grizzled ex-huntsman moose Faunus with a scarred face and broken left antler, is a rather terrifying sight. He is one of the best fighters and hunters in the tribe and he is responsible for training people in both of those things, alongside Raven for the former. Right now he is teaching Corvus to hunt deer. He trains lots of people in the tribe but there are rarely ever children, the youngest members are usually around their late teens, so Bruno having to teach a five year old these things is an interesting experience to say the least.

As they trekked through the forest as silent as can be, Bruno spots tracks in the dirt and calls Corvus over to them.

"Corvus! See these tracks? They're fresh deer tracks, remember them 'cos you'll be tracking the Beast from here on out."

Corvus gave a quick 'yes Bruno' and set off in the direction of the tracks, following them attentively while keeping an eye out for any movement in the trees. Eventually the two of them caught up to the deer which was drinking from a stream, facing away from them.

"Good work boy" Bruno said in a deep whisper. "Now stay here and keep watch while I take it down."

The Faunus moved around the left side slightly upstream from the deer and notches an arrow in his compound bow before firing it and striking the deer in the eye, killing it instantly.

"That, boy, is what I'm going to be training you in until you have perfected it. Now help me pack this up, so we can continue"

After they packed their up their fresh kill Bruno hefted it over his shoulder like it weighed nothing, which it probably did to him. The two continued their search through the forest for more deer, occasionally foraging berries along the way, until they came upon a grisly scene. They had found another deer, but this one was mutilated and seemed like it had been savagely attacked by a much larger creature.

"Gods, what did this?" Corvus asked the older man.

"I don't know boy, I want to say it was a bear but these tracks…" he paused as he knelt down to examine the incredibly large and unusual footprints near the corpse. "… these are much to big to be any normal creature."

"So a Grimm?"

"It's possible, but not likely. Grimm attack people on sight but never really bother with animals, this is unusual indeed. We should head back to camp, we can venture out another time."

"Aww, I didn't even get the chance to get a kill" Corvus moaned disappointedly.

"You'll have your chance boy, but you must be patient. It is one of the most important virtues of a hunter, regardless of what prey you are hunting. Now come."

The trip back to camp was uneventful, thankfully, and the two had managed to bring back a decent amount of food. It wouldn't solve their shortage but it helps. Bruno took the food to elsewhere in the camp to be stored while Corvus went back to the large tent in the innermost area of the camp, where he and his mother reside.

Moving through the opening, he sees his mother sitting on her bed sharpening her blade. Hearing someone enter she looks up and a surprised look spread across her face before a gentle smile took its place.

"You're back early" she said as she stood up to embrace her son.

"There was something in the woods killing deer, it seemed too big to be a bear but Bruno said that it probably wasn't a Grimm either. We came back after that."

"Well as long as you're safe. Now you should get something to eat and then get some rest, we'll be sparring tomorrow and I have a few surprises for you over the winter." Raven says with a smirk

Corvus immediately looks excited. "Really!? What kind of surprises?"

"Well if I told you that then they wouldn't be surprises now, would they? Now come on, food then bed. Just because we aren't going to be raiding and hunting doesn't mean we're going to stop training, you need to be well rested and well fed if you want to beat me in a spar."

"Ok mom!" Corvus said as he left the tent, leaving his mother on her own. Raven was still reeling from the loss of her teammate, according to Qrow nobody had heard from Summer for a while and her semblance's link with the woman still hadn't come back like she prayed it would. She'd never lost someone she cared about before so grieving was new to her, she kept telling herself that she had to keep it together for Corvus' sake but she was struggling. Fortunately spending time with her son helps and the things she had planned for the winter for them would keep her from falling apart.

I am so sorry for this taking so long, I planned for it to come out sooner but I've not been able to upload it cos my internet's been down. I've got a very good outline of the next chapter so I'll get to working on that asap. I won't say when I expect it to be done cos I don't wanna set a deadline and then not deliver, y'know? I'm 100% still working on this story though so don't worry. Also sorry for not making this longer like I said I would but I didn't want to drag it out, this chapter was pretty much just sowing the seeds for future chapters so if it's 'meh' then that's why. I hope the next couple of chapters can make up for it.

I'd also like to give a quick shoutout to Kirino2-0! Two of my favorite stories of theirs, Being Normal 101 and Yang Branwen were two of the stories that inspired me to make this. You can find Kirino in the reviews and I highly suggest reading their stories.
