Chapter 5 : Komo-Rui
"Thank you for offering to help Raven. There aren't many experienced hunters left in Komo-Rui, so your assistance with this matter is appreciated."
"Well just count yourself lucky I brought Qrow along. If it was just me and my son I wouldn't have given this a second thought."
"Raven, I'm sure you'd like nothing more than to just spend time with him and by all means you are free to do so. Like I said, this Grimm problem isn't that big, just strange."
"The strangest problems are usually the worse ones Oran, I shouldn't have to tell you why. It's better that this is dealt with sooner rather than later. Tell me what's been going on."
The large man exhaled, taking a seat in the back room of the bar. "There's a Grimm that's been hanging around in these woods. It's territory is quite large, in fact the border of it is probably not that far from your regular camp locations Raven. Which is why I feel you'd want to help deal with it."
"The strange thing is…" he continued. "…is that it's not acting like a normal Grimm. As in, it's not rampaging around killing everyone it sees. Instead it… it kind of feels like it's messing with us."
"Grimm don't do that" Raven retorted. "Even the more intelligent ones don't 'mess with people,' you know this."
"Well this one does. I don't know what to tell you Raven but when I say that it's been messing with us, I mean it's been messing with us."
"Can you be more specific?"
"This thing's been going around killing our livestock and any animal it can find in the woods, caused us a lot of trouble when we were trying to stock up for the winter."
Raven wasn't happy to hear this, having heard from Bruno about animals with wounds from Grimm that he and Corvus encountered on their hunts. Realizing that her son came close to encountering this Grimm made her quite angry and gave her newfound vigor to end this problem before it gets worse.
"That's not even the end of it." Oran continued. "It's been sneaking around inside the village at night. You'd expect it to go around killing people left, right and center, breaking into houses and the like, but no. It's been destroying our crops, killing any poor thing, human or otherwise that wanders off alone and leaves their corpse in a brutal state. And when one of our guards catch a glimpse the monster, it just runs away. It's incredibly unsettling, I don't think I've seen anything like it before."
"Sounds like its trying to sow panic and fear." Raven deduced. "But what I don't understand is why it doesn't just kill everyone when it has its chance. If it's this smart, why waste the opportunity?"
"That's the thing Raven, its toying with us. That's what worried the people the most. Even those who know very little about Grimm know that they don't play with their food, so having one act this way terrifies them."
Raven sighs and pinches the bridge of her nose. "I thought you said this wasn't a big problem."
"A Grimm horde on our doorstep is a big problem Raven. While this isn't exactly a laughing matter, it's not an 'all hands on deck' situation either."
"I don't care what you call it, it needs to be dealt with." She snaps. "You said it comes around at night, right?" Oran gives her an affirming 'hmm'. "Then we'll see if we can catch it tonight."
"Alright. Come with me then, so I can show you where it frequents."
"Whadda you want, kiddo?"
"I… have no idea."
Corvus and Qrow were sat at a small restaurant they had found after a few minutes of wandering the village. Qrow already had planned out some things to do with Corvus but he figured they'd get lunch first.
"Can't make your mind up eh?"
"Actually I, um… don't know what most of this stuff is." Corvus said sheepishly.
"Right, shoulda figured that… Well, don't worry about it kiddo. Why don't we just order you something I know you'll definitely like?"
"Alright."
The waitress approached the two and took their orders and left, after which Qrow continued telling the story from earlier.
"Alright… where was I? Aw yeah, just about finished. Yeah, so as I said before this village is kind of a secret. Now I'm not sure why but the founders wanted to keep it that way, something about wanting to keep it hidden from the Mistral council. You'll come to find that most in the outer villages don't really like the council."
"Why not?"
"Cos they don't give a damn about most people out here. Mid-to-upper level Mistral, Argus and their closest villages they look after, anyone else is left to fend for themselves. This place used to be a sort of hub for hunters around here, they'd do missions for Komo-Rui and the surrounding territories when Mistral won't, cos the last headmistress tended to keep the hunters close to her chest, prioritizing the inner villages and neglecting the outer ones. That uh… it's caused a lot of trouble. But yeah, unfortunately this place has kinda fallen off as a hunter hub. Hunters still come here of course, but nowhere near as often as they used to. Most of the regulars were quite a bit older than your mom and I so they likely just decided to give up the hunter life, leaving only a few of them to look after the town. Still, it's a nice secret retreat if you need a few days off, especially if you're a hunter."
"Is that how you and mom got the rooms for free?"
"Yep. Hunter's discount is one thing, but being part of the group that made this village possible gives us some extra perks."
Qrow paused as the waitress was back with their orders. Corvus looked at the two plates as the lady put them down and saw two very different meals. The first, his, was slabs of what looked like bread covered in a viscous liquid, it actually looked somewhat appetizing. Qrow's however, looked disgusting. It looked like what you'd leave in an outhouse after a particularly bad stomach ache. He didn't know if the fact that they actually served this filth was more or less horrifying than how eagerly Qrow started eating it.
Qrow looked at up at Corvus as he was finishing his first forkful and nearly spat it out upon seeing his mortified expression. He swallowed his food and laughed.
"What's with that look kiddo?" He said trying to hold back from bursting out laughing again.
"That… looks disgusting." He said with a grimace on his face.
"It's not that bad. Sure it doesn't look appetizing but trust me, it tastes great."
"Sure it does. What even is it?"
"It's a chicken curry. A dish from south-east Mistral, wanna try some?"
"No thanks." Corvus said, leaning away from the offending food as if it was about to jump out at him.
"Why don't you try your own food? You'll love these kiddo, everyone does."
"And what are they?"
"Pancakes. They're a dessert."
"A what?"
"They're like treats, kid. You never had any?"
"Mom said any food we can get is a treat."
Qrow gave him a blank look before sighing. "Good thing she asked me to come along then…" he muttered under his breath.
"What?"
"Nothing kiddo, eat up. We're gonna have some fun today and you'll need a full stomach."
Corvus took a tentative bite out of his meal and found out he quite enjoyed it. He began scarfing down his pancakes so quickly that Qrow had to warn him to slow down.
The two continued to eat as they talked about various topics, with Qrow telling the occasional short story. Once the two had finished they left the restaurant, with Qrow leaving the waitress a generous tip, and the duo went on to explore the village.
"So kiddo, is there anything you enjoy doing other than training?"
"I enjoy hunting." he said with a shrug.
"Your Mom sends you out hunting? At your age?"
"I'm old enough to go hunting" he pouted. "And it's not like I go on my own. I go with Bruno."
"Bruno? That name sounds familiar… Is he your dad?" he said. While he was feigning ignorance about who Corvus' true father really was, the name Bruno was indeed familiar to him.
"He pretty much is, even though he isn't really my dad. He helped mom when I was growing up, he helped her train me on how to use swords and he's been teaching me to hunt too. And he's soo cool! He used to be a huntsman, like you and mom!"
Qrow was unsure what to think hearing his nephew fawn over this guy. While he's happy Corvus actually has some sort of father figure, he's worried about what's going to happen when he finds out about his real father and what said father will think. He decides to go along with Corvus for the meantime.
"Heh, he sounds like a pretty cool guy. Not as cool as me though."
"He is soo much cooler than you!"
"Oh really? Well I'm definitely gonna change your mind about that one day."
"I'd like to see you try!"
"Oh really? We'll alright then. At our next stop I'll show you exactly how cool I am kid."
"Where is our next stop?"
"You'll see."
"Here we are. C'mon Kid."
Corvus followed Qrow inside the building. Upon entering, he sees lots of different weapons on racks and in glass cases around the room. Behind the counter he sees a woman with the eyes of a snake and a very stony expression. Despite her intimidating appearance she still greeted Qrow in a somewhat friendly manner.
"Well, look who's back… Fancy seeing you again Qrow. What brings you here?" The Faunus said with a barely-visible smirk.
"Just on a little field trip. My nephew here likes weapons and such, so I though I'd show him what kind of stuff you've got here."
"Nephew? I thought he was your kid for a minute there."
"Ha" Qrow barked. "Surely you know me better than that Lynda. Nah, this is Raven's kid. His name is Corvus."
"I didn't know Raven had a kid."
"Yeah well, you know how she is."
Lynda looks at Corvus with a surprisingly gentle smile. "Nice to meet you Corvus, my name's Lynda. I run the training center and armory here in Komo-Rui."
"Why don't you have a look around at some of these weapons kiddo? I know you've been trying to decide what you want to use when you're older, you might see something you like." Qrow said as he leaned on the counter to talk to Lynda some more.
Corvus immediately started scanning the room for weapons that peaked his interest. He saw many different varieties of weapons of varying quality. Nothing really caught his eye though. Most of what he was seeing was either too shabby, too boring or too complicated. He had a rough idea of what he wanted, which was a dust sword, but that was about as much as he knows. Should he have one large sword? Two short swords? Or just one similar to his mother's? And what about the dust? How would that work with his weapon? He was always at a loss when he thought about it and it annoyed him to no end. He knows he needs to be patient, but part of him doesn't care. The sooner he gets his weapon the sooner he can start training with it, and he has a lot of training to do.
As he's finishing his train of thought a weapon catches his eye on the last wall he looks at. He sees a very large Nodachi, much larger than the one his mom uses. The weapon itself is very ornamental, being decorated with reds and whites with various patterns over the hilt and blade that he couldn't make out. It is the only weapon he's seen so far that has actually manage to capture his attention for long enough to actually consider using it in the future. He still wasn't entirely sure, but he was more sure than he's ever been. His thoughts were interrupted by Qrow speaking from beside him.
"Damn, that's a work of art right there. Good eye, kiddo"
Corvus couldn't help but agree, but before he could say anything, Qrow spoke up again.
"Alright, so now that you've had a nice look around, why don't we head into the training center 'round back?"
"Why?"
"So we can spar, dummy. We've got a few days to find you some new hobbies, we don't have to do it now. Let's have some fun first eh? We've got plenty of time. Besides, you wanted to see how cool your uncle Qrow was right? What better time to show you than now?"
