12. The Fairy Judgement

Chapter 12: The Fairy Judgement

After winning his third badge at the Vermillion Gym and parting ways with Arata, Gilbert, Yolanda and Sakura prepared to set off for their next destination. "Okay, gang, Arata said he was going to Celadon City in order to meet up with Aubrina." Gilbert said. "So, you suggest that we should go to Celadon City for your next gym battle?" Sakura asked. "Maybe. But there's also the choice of Saffron City. I heard from my brother that the Gym Leader's gotta better since his last visit." Yolanda said. "Hmm. This choice could be a doozy." Gilbert said. They thought about it for a while before Sakura made a decision. "Maybe we should go for Saffron City next. It's well along the way while we head for Lavender Town next." She said. "Good idea. We can head for Lavender Town first and head to Saffron City from there." Yolanda said. "Then it's settled then. First Lavender Town, then Saffron City." Gilbert said.

With that settled, the gang headed out on their way. "So, as we continue on this path, we'll come across a big fishing dock. It's a very popular hangout for fishermen trainers. Then we head upwards to Lavender Town from there." Sakura explained. "Great. And when we get to the dock, we can get some training in, maybe catch some Water-Type Pokémon, battle these fishermen trainers and head for Lavender Town." Gilbert said. "I like the sound of that." Yolanda said. Suddenly, Clefairy popped out of her PokéBall. "Fairy!" She squealed. "Clefairy, what're you doing out?" Yolanda asked in confusion. Just then, Clefairy took off into the forest. "Clefairy, come back!" Yolanda cried, taking off after her Pokémon. "Clefairy!" Gilbert called as he and Sakura followed. As the gang followed Clefairy, they finally caught up with her. They also found a young girl around their age with red hair giving Clefairy gentle pats on the head. "Oh, hello. Is this your Clefairy?" The young girl asked. "Yes. She's my Clefairy." Yolanda said. "Well, it's a pleasure to meet this Clefairy and its trainer. I'm Aria Mistheart." The young girl, Aria, introduced. "Hi, I'm Yolanda." Yolanda introduced. "I'm Gilbert." Gilbert introduced. "And I'm Sakura." Sakura introduced.

After introductions and getting Clefairy back, the gang sat down with Aria. "So, you guys are on your way to Saffron City?" Aria asked. "Yes. I just recently won my third Gym Badge at the Vermillion City Gym and we're going for my fourth." Gilbert said. "We were on the path towards the dock before our unexpected meeting." Sakura said. "Really? That's nice." Aria said. "Yeah. But Clefairy, you really should know better than to just wander off like that." Yolanda said. "Fairy." Clefairy said with apology. "Nah, don't be so hard on her. We all get like that at times. Even my own Pokémon have had their share of running off when I started traveling." Aria said. "Have you had any share of gym battles, Aria?" Sakura asked. "I've had my share. But after winning a few badges, I've decided to take a break and express the beauty of nature." Aria explained. Gilbert, Yolanda and Sakura were in awe at that. "Speaking of battles, what say we have a battle right now? I will face all 3 of you, one at a time." Aria said. "Sounds like an idea." Sakura said. "Sure. It'll help me get some training for Saffron City." Gilbert said. "Excellent. Then my first battle shall be against…you, Yolanda." Aria said, pointing to Yolanda. "Alright. Then let's see what you got." Yolanda said.

Later, Yolanda and Aria took their positions. "Okay, ready, Clefairy?" Yolanda asked. "Clefairy!" Clefairy squealed as she hopped to the center. "Alright. So, since you're using Clefairy, I'll go with…Slurpuff!" Aria called as she tossed a PokéBall. "Slurpuff!" Slurpuff barked as she was released. "What kind of Pokémon is that?" Sakura asked. "Let's check it out." Gilbert said as he took out his Pokédex and scanned Slurpuff.

Slurpuff, the Meringue Pokémon, a Fairy-Type and the evolved form of Swirlix. Slurpuff have an exceptionally keen sense of smell can sniff out things 100 million times better than an average human nose. They also use that sense of smell to tell a person's metal and physical conditions.

"So, she's using a Fairy-Type Pokémon from Kalos." Gilbert said. "This should be interesting. I heard Slurpuff can use many different types of moves aside from Fairy-Type moves." Sakura said.

"You ready to battle, Yolanda?" Aria asked. "Ready when you are." Yolanda said. "Great. Since I challenged, I'll let you make the first move." Aria said. "Alright. Let's do it, Clefairy. Use Pound!" Yolanda called. "Fairy!" Clefairy squealed as she leapt towards Slurpuff, her right arm glowing white, ready to use Pound on Slurpuff. "Block it with Cotton Guard." Aria said. "Slurpuff." Slurpuff inflated the cotton on her body and blocked the Pound, pushing Clefairy back. "Alright then. Let's try this, Clefairy. Use Present!" Yolanda said. Clefairy raised her hand and formed a multi-colored ball in it. Aria and Slurpuff were confused. "Why would she use Clefairy's egg move?" Sakura asked. "I don't know but that's a really big 50-50 chance of either healing or dealing damage to Slurpuff." Gilbert said. Clefairy tossed it at the confused Slurpuff and it exploded, covering Slurpuff in smoke. "Yes! We got her!" Yolanda cheered. "Clefairy!" Clefairy cheered as she hopped up and down. But as the smoke cleared, Slurpuff was barely scratched from the explosion. Yolanda and Clefairy were shocked. "Alright, Slurpuff, use Moonblast." Aria said. Slurpuff formed a ball of pink energy in front of her mouth and fired it at Clefairy, hitting her hard as it exploded. "Clefairy!" Yolanda cried. Clefairy was fainted on her back. "And that gives me the win." Aria said.

Gilbert, Yolanda and Sakura raced over to Clefairy as she started to recover. "Clefairy, are you okay?" Yolanda asked. "Cle…fairy." Clefairy said sadly. "Hey, you did your best, Clefairy. But we'll continue to get better together." Yolanda assured. "Clefairy." Clefairy squeaked happily. "There's my girl. Now get a nice rest." Yolanda said, returning Clefairy to her PokéBall. "Good work, Slurpuff. That's another win for us." Aria said. "Slur." Slurpuff said, blushing before Aria returned her back to her PokéBall. "I gotta say, Aria, your Slurpuff sure is strong." Yolanda said. "Thanks. Slurpuff and I have been training together since I was little and she was a Swirlix. And since then, we've grown and gotten stronger together." Aria said. Gilbert, Yolanda and Sakura were amazed by this. "So, who wants to battle me next?" Aria asked. "I'll battle you next." Sakura said as she stood up. "Alright. Let's see what you got, Sakura." Aria said.

Sakura and Aria took their positions. "I wonder what Pokémon Aria will use this time." Gilbert said. "Considering how strong Slurpuff was, it'll probably be a Pokémon that's equally strong." Yolanda said. "Okay, Espeon, I choose you!" Sakura called, tossing her PokéBall. "Espeon!" Espeon barked as she was released. "Espeon, huh? Then I shall choose…Florges!" Aria called as she tossed a PokéBall. "Florges." Florges said gently as she was released. "What is that?" Yolanda asked. "It's another Pokémon from Kalos." Gilbert said as he took out his Pokédex and scanned Florges.

Florges, the Garden Pokémon, a Fairy-Type and the evolved form of Floette. Florges worked together with nobles long ago to create gardens for their kingdoms. The flower gardens Florges protect are known to contain healing properties for the body and spirit.

"Florges and their whole evolution line are also known to come in 5 different petal colors. Red, blue, yellow, orange and white." Gilbert explained. "And Aria's using a Red Flower Florges." Yolanda said. "And if I'm right, it'll be just as strong as her Slurpuff." Gilbert said.

"Like I did with Yolanda, you have the first attack, Sakura." Aria said. "Very well. Okay, Espeon, use Psybeam!" Sakura called. "Espe…on!" Espeon fired Psybeam from the gem on her forehead. "Flower Shield." Aria said. "Flor." Florges' body glowed bright pink as red flower petals formed and surrounded her, blocking Espeon's Psybeam. The group was surprised at what happened. "What just happened?" Sakura asked. "Flower Shield. It raises my Florges' defense and protects herself from your attacks." Aria explained. "I see…Don't let up, Espeon! Swift attack!" Sakura called. "Espeon!" Espeon's tail glowed yellow as she summersaulted, firing energy stars. "Magical Leaf." Aria said. "Flor!" Florges raised her arms and fired energy leaves, intercepting the Swift attack. "Okay. Let's try a Tackle attack!" Sakura called. "Espe, Espe, Espe!" Espeon charged towards Florges, ready to tackle her. "Grass Knot." Aria said. "Flor." Florges' eyes glowed lime green as the grass blades tied into a knot. Espeon tripped on the knot, messing up her Tackle. "Espeon!" Sakura cried with worry. "Now, Florges, it's time for our special double move. Energy Ball and Moonblast, double blast!" Aria called. "Flor…ges!" Florges formed an Energy Ball in her right hand and a Moonblast in her left hand, and fired them both at Espeon, causing an explosion. "Espeon!" Sakura cried. As the smoke cleared, Espeon fainted from the blow. "And that's win number 2." Aria said.

Sakura hurried over to Espeon to check on her. "Espeon, are you okay?" She asked with worry. "Espe…on." Espeon said as she slowly recovered. "I know you gave it your all, Espeon. We'll keep training and get stronger together. Now get a good rest." Sakura said, returning Espeon to her PokéBall. "Your Espeon is quite amazing, Sakura." Aria said. "Thank you, Aria. I raise her since she was an Eevee." Sakura said. "Oh, that takes me back too. I've had Florges since she was a Flabébé. Like with Slurpuff, we got strong together, even up to when she evolved into Floette and finally into Florges." Aria explained. "Flor." Florges agreed as Aria returned her to her PokéBall. "Now then, I guess that leaves just you left to battle, Gilbert." Aria said, turning to Gilbert. "Right. And I'm ready to battle." Gilbert said.

Gilbert and Aria took their positions. "So, you ready for a challenge, Gilbert?" Aria asked. "Always ready, Aria." Gilbert said. "Good. Then choose your Pokémon." Aria said. "Already did. Ivysaur, I choose you!" Gilbert called as he tossed his PokéBall. "Ivysaur!" Ivysaur called as he was released. "An Ivysaur, eh? Very nice choice. Then I'll go with…Mawile!" Aria called as she tossed a PokéBall. "Mawile." Mawile said as she was released. "Whoa. Mawile." Gilbert said as he took out his Pokédex and scanned Mawile.

Mawile, the Deceiver Pokemon, a Steel-and-Fairy-Type. Mawile use their non-threatening appearances to deceive their foes, and then attack them with its jaw-like appendages. Its jaws are strong enough to bite a whole iron beam in half.

"Mawile could be tricky. So, let's be careful of those jaws, Ivysaur." Gilbert said. "Saur." Ivysaur nodded. "Good to caution your Pokémon about my Mawile. But it won't be enough. So, you have the first attack, Gilbert." Aria said. "Alright. Ivysaur, use Petal Dance!" Gilbert called. "Ivysaur!" Ivysaur fired pink petals from his bud. "Iron Defense." Aria said. "Maw!" Mawile unhinged her jaws in front of her as her body glowed in solid metal, blocking the petals. "Alright. Now use Fire Fang." Aria said. "Mawile!" Mawile's jaws became coated in fire as she lunged for Ivysaur. "Use Vine Whip to jump!" Gilbert called. "Ivy…saur!" Ivysaur used his vines to leap over Mawile's jaws, dodging the attack. "Maw!" Mawile gasped in shock. "Ivysaur jumps?!" Aria asked in shock. "Now Razor Leaf!" Gilbert called. "Saur!" Ivysaur fired leaves from his bud, slicing Mawile. "Nice. Now fight back, Mawile! Flash Cannon!" "Maw. Mawile!" Mawile recovered from the Razor Leaf, gathered energy in her jaws and fired a silver beam at Ivysaur. "Ivysaur, quick! Intercept with Energy Ball!" Gilbert called. "Ivy…saur!" Ivysaur fired an Energy Ball from his mouth, colliding with the Flash Cannon. "Pretty good attempt." Aria said. Just then, Mawile's Flash Cannon broke through the Energy Ball. "But not good enough." She added. The Flash Cannon struck Ivysaur. "Ivysaur!" Gilbert cried with worry. Ivysaur fainted from the blast. "And that gives me win number 3." Aria said.

Gilbert rushed over to Ivysaur as he slowly recovered. "You okay, Ivysaur?" Gilbert asked. "Saur." Ivysaur said. "I'm really proud of you, buddy. You did well with that jump and the Energy Ball. Now you get a good rest." Gilbert said, returning Ivysaur to his PokéBall. "I admit, Gilbert, you are one amazing trainer. And your Ivysaur is quite the battler. You caught me and Mawile off-guard with that Vine Whip for a bit." Aria said. "Mawile." Mawile agreed. "Thanks, Aria. But you really handed it to me with that Flash Cannon." Gilbert said. "Thank you. We've had a lot of practice when perfecting the move." Aria said. Suddenly, her stomach growled, causing her to blush in embarrassment. "Oops! All this battling sure makes a girl hungry." She said. Just then, Mawile's stomach growled too. "Maw-ha-ha." Mawile chuckled as also she blushed in embarrassment. "I guess this is the perfect time to have a lunch break to refuel from some intense battling." Yolanda said. "Good idea." Sakura said. "It'll be good for us and our Pokémon too." Gilbert said.

A while later, the gang, Aria and their Pokémon were relaxing while eating lunch. Yolanda had made everyone sandwiches and fruit punch. As Aria ate, she took a glance at the other Pokémon. Aside from Ivysaur, Gilbert had Beedrill, Hoothoot, Sandshrew, Machop and Sneasel. "I must say, Gilbert, you have quite the team there." She said. "Thanks, Aria. I've raised them well." Gilbert said. "And seeing a Hisuian Sneasel, so unusual." Aria said, eyeing Sneasel. "Yeah, there was a pack of them causing trouble in Vermilion City when we got there. But we managed to help them and now I got my own Sneasel." Gilbert explained. "Well, I think you're well deserving of such a rare Pokémon." Aria said. "Thank you, Aria." Gilbert said.

Suddenly, there was a familiar laugh in the air. "Who's that?" Sakura asked. "Oh no." Gilbert said, knowing who it was. "Well, well, well. If it isn't the little smart guy who caught my Beedrill in Viridian Forest." Jimbo said as he and his Blaziken walked up. "Jimbo." Gilbert said venomously. Beedrill buzzed in anger. "You know this guy?" Yolanda asked. "Unfortunately. We met in the Viridian Forest. His Blaziken attacked my Beedrill and scared him by burning him. He has no respect for the game." Gilbert explained. "And I see that you've managed to gain a loser group of your own, kid." Jimbo said, gesturing to Yolanda and Sakura. Just then, he noticed Sneasel. "And where did you get that Sneasel?" He asked with a sudden interest. "Caught him in Vermilion City." Gilbert said. "Then how about giving it to me?" Jimbo asked suddenly and selfishly. The group was shocked at this. "You're crazy if you think I'm giving Sneasel to you!" Gilbert exclaimed. "Snea!" Sneasel exclaimed, readying his claws. "Alright. Then how about I battle you, beat you and take it from you? After all, I've heard how you've managed to win at 3 gyms in a row. I figured since you're a basic Pallet Town brat, you won by pure luck." Jimbo said. Gilbert was about to argue back, but Aria blocked him with her arm. "Then clearly you're a person with terrible hearing." Aria said. "What was that? And who are you anyway?" Jimbo asked. "Aria Mistheart from Kalos. And I'll be the one battling you." Aria said. "Mawile!" Mawile said, standing with her trainer. "Very well. Let's show this girl how the toughest trainer in the world battles for real, Blaziken." Jimbo said. "Blaze." Blaziken said with a small hint of hesitation.

Aria and Jimbo took their positions as Mawile and Blaziken prepared to battle. As the group and their Pokémon watched from the side, Gilbert got out his Pokédex and scanned Blaziken since he forgot to scan him last time.

Blaziken, the Blaze Pokemon, a Fire-and-Fighting-Type, and the evolved form of Combusken. Blaziken's very powerful legs allow it to jump over 30-story buildings. When their old feathers burn off, new supple ones grow back in their place.

"What do you think? You think Aria might be able to win? I mean, Blaziken's a Fire-and-Fighting-Type and it's got a huge advantage against Mawile since she's part Steel-Type." Sakura said with worry. "I have a feeling that Mawile will be just fine." Gilbert said. "What do you mean, Gilbert?" Yolanda asked. "When I battled Mawile, I noticed a sleeve with a very familiar gemstone attached to her." Gilbert said.

[Flashback]

Ivysaur used his Vine Whip to leap over Mawile's jaws. Suddenly, Gilbert noticed Mawile had a sleeve on her left arm. And locked in it was a Mega Stone.

[Flashback End]

"A Mega Stone?" Sakura asked in surprise. "That's what it looked like to me." Gilbert said. "Then here's guessing that Aria might use Mega Evolution against Jimbo." Yolanda said.

"So, shall we get started or what?" Jimbo asked. "Alright. Since you're so insistent, I'll let you make the first move." Aria said. "That's all I need since the first move's the only move to win. Blaziken, Overheat!" Jimbo ordered. "Blaziken!" Blaziken's body glowed crimson before he fired a powerful fire beam towards Mawile. "Use your jaws to jump!" Aria called. "Maw…wile!" Mawile used her jaws to leap over the Overheat. "What the?!" Jimbo exclaimed in shock. "She jumped!" Yolanda said. "Just like Ivysaur did!" Sakura said. "Got that right. Learned that strategy from you, Gilbert." Aria said, winking at Gilbert. "Thank you, Aria." Gilbert said, feeling flattered. Blaziken watched this friendship with interest. "Who cares about him! Blaziken, use Blaze Kick when Mawile comes down!" Jimbo ordered. Blaziken's feet coated with fire as Mawile started to come down. "Do it." Aria said. "Maw." Mawile nodded. As Blaziken threw his Blaze Kick, when Mawile landed, she caught his foot in her jaws! "What?!" Jimbo exclaimed in shock. "Mawile caught Blaziken's foot right in her jaws!" Gilbert exclaimed. "Makes sense. Mawile's jaws are quite powerful. When they bite down on something, they don't let go." Yolanda said.

"Get free of that mouth, you stupid creature!" Jimbo ordered. Blaziken tried to pull his leg free, but Mawile clamped down tightly. "Give him a toss, Mawile." Aria said. "Maw…wile!" Mawile tossed Blaziken to the ground. "Get up! Get up! How are we to become the most powerful if you end up losing!" Jimbo exclaimed. The group didn't like how Jimbo was treating Blaziken. "You need to learn some manners on how to rightfully treat Pokémon. And I have just the lesson." Aria said, revealing her Key Stone on her ring. As she activated it, Mawile's Mega Stone glowed in sync with it. "Let our hearts beat as one. Mega Evolve!" Aria called. Mawile's body glowed magenta as it began to Mega Evolve. "Mawile!" She bellowed as she Mega Evolved. "So, that's Mega Evolution." Sakura said in awe. "That's so cool." Yolanda said, amazed. "To think Ivysaur will be able to do that when he evolves." Gilbert said. "As if Mega Evolution will make a difference. Blaziken, let's be done with this! Use Flare Blitz!" Jimbo ordered. "Blaze." Blaziken's body engulfed in red fire. "Get ready, Mawile." Aria said. "Mawile." Mawile got ready. "Blaze!" The fire turned bright blue as Blaziken charged towards Mawile. "Iron Head." Aria said. "Maw…wile!" Mawile's head glowed in iron white and charged towards Blaziken. The 2 collided, creating an explosion. The group looked on with concern for Mawile. When the smoke cleared, Mawile and Blaziken were standing on their feet. Just then, Blaziken dropped to his knees and fainted. "I win." Aria said. "Mawile." Mawile said proudly as she devolved back to normal. "She did it." Sakura said. "She beat Jimbo." Yolanda said. "Mega Evolution is incredible." Gilbert said. Even the Pokémon were in awe.

Jimbo returned Blaziken to his PokéBall. "You're still as useless as the rest." He said rudely. Just then, Aria walked up to him and looked at him right in the eyes. "Now you listen to me. If you continue to walk down this path of power and mistreatment, you're going to end up meeting a very bad end." She warned. Jimbo, stunned by what she said, walked away. But then, he switched his stunned face to an 'I-don't-care' face. "Shows what you know. I will be the strongest trainer in the world. And none of you will stand in the way." He muttered.

Afterwards, Aria and the gang prepared to go their separate ways. "Thanks for the great battles, you guys. I can't remember the last time I had a battle so much fun." Aria said. "No problem, Aria. We had fun too." Yolanda said. "Hopefully, we can battle again someday." Sakura said. "I'd like that too." Aria said. "Hopefully, that'll be the last we see of Jimbo for a while." Gilbert said. "Yeah, I did not like that guy's attitude." Yolanda said. "Don't worry about him for now. You'll all get your chance at him." Aria assured. "Yeah, you're right." Sakura said. "Until we meet again, Aria. And I hope to battle Mega Mawile one day too." Gilbert said, offering his hand. "Likewise, Gilbert." Aria said, accepting his handshake. With that new friendship formed, Gilbert and his friends continued on their way to Saffron City as Aria and Mawile waved them goodbye and wished them a good luck on their journey.
