Chapter 1: Welcome to Hell Week
The sun blared against the concrete, a hot summer afternoon her street was eerily quiet as she stood in front of her driveway, shielding her eyes from the offensive sun, emerald coloured trees stood high against a clear blue sky, providing no shade or reprieve from the hot summer day. She watched a single car drive slowly as the onlookers hid their eyes from her, she shook her head and turned her back, walking back up the driveway. She struggled to lift the heavy box, heaving she hoisted the tan coloured box in her arms into the back of the rental car.
She paused, looking back at the house and sighed "Well that's it" she thought
She tucked a loc of hair behind her ear, and walked back towards the car door, she gave her home one final look before opening the door harshly and climbing in. She looked back at the sleeping child in the backseat, a sad smile tugged at her lips as she drove onto the street, she turned and darted down the normally quiet street.
She slid her window down, and tossed the old house keys out the window as she rolled to a stop. She watched the small kids run past her car, laughing happily as they kicked around a bouncing red ball, she chewed her lip patiently waiting for them to pass. She pressed her foot lightly on the gas as she faced the open street, she heard a faint buzzing sound coming from her purse.
She eyed the bag, and kept one hand on the steering wheel as she reached over and rummaged through the bag.
She pulled her phone from the overfilled bag, and answered the call.
Tucking the phone into the cup holder, she placed the call on speaker.
"Hey!" she said tiredly
"Hey girl! Just checking to see if you've made it into the city"
She hummed, as she turned a corner. "I just left the house, I had to pick up the last few boxes"
"I thought Inuyasha was going to spring for a mover?"
She cleared her throat "Nope, don't need a mover if you don't have furniture"
"WHAT?!"
"Sango, Shippou's sleeping" she shushed her friend
"Wait Kagome, what exactly are guys going to sleep on"
"I'm sure the motel has some furniture" she said quietly, as she pulled onto the highway
"Kagome, what are you talking about? I thought you found a place"
She sighed and said "I did but uhm Inuyasha isn't paying the deposit so I lost the place"
She heard rustling on the other line, and said softly "I signed a prenup San remember so technically he isn't required to do anything for me"
"And Shippou? That's his son!" Sango said firmly
She pressed her lips into a line, and looked back at the sleeping child. She sighed and said "According to him and his lawyer, he's not! Shippo's adopted and Inuyasha isn't his birth father, therefore he's isn't obligated to do anything for either of us" her voice repeated the words her ex husband's lawyer had said, robotically, the words leaving a metallic taste in her mouth.
"Fucking asshole" Sango sighed
"Yeah, totally" she sniffled as she looked out the rearview mirror, watching the suburban town shrink.
"Okay you're coming here" Sango said
She shook her head, and said "Sango I couldn't, it's fine okay we'll figure it out"
"Bullshit! You're my best friend, and your asshole ex left you with nothing! You're staying here!" Sango said pointedly
"San-" she began
"Kagome we're here to help, let us help" a voice said calmly
A sad smile tugged at her lips, as she heard the familiar voice. She said "Hey Kagura"
"Hey chicken, now bring your ass out here! I'll clean out my office space, and see if we can't get you a bed"
Tears pooled in her eyes, as she drove over the bridge. She sniffled, and said quietly "Okay"
"Okay, do you remember how to get here"
She said "Yeah"
"Okay, call me when you're close! Kagura and I are going to run and see if we can't get you both things"
She held back a sob, and said weakly "Okay"
She listened to Sango's plan as she drove over the large bridge, she watched the city come into her view. Her eyes widened as she watched the sun shine against the skyscrapers, her breath was caught in her throat.
She was awed by the beauty of the New York city skyline that laid out in front of her as she drove towards the bustling city. Since moving to the east coast she hadn't really visited the city, she'd normally opted to meet her friend halfway from her comfortable suburb, sometimes Sango would spend the night whenever Inuyasha suggested he stay in the city. He'd say the commute was lengthy and he was tired, so he'd stay with his dad, assuring her that he'd be home the following day.
She didn't know it then, but that was the beginning of their end.
She sighed, as she looked through her side window, watching the sun shine against the roaring river below. She held her breath as she crossed the famed bridge, her new life coming into view; busy streets, people rushing into traffic as drivers honk their horn;she followed the flow of traffic, sighing at each stop light.
"I forgot how insane the city was" she thought
"Mama are we there yet" a small voice shook her from her thoughts
Blue eyes peered into widened green orbs, her frown softening as a small smile tugged at her lips.
"Hey baby, we're almost there okay"
She watched the little boy's ginger mop shake as he nodded.
Looking into the soft blue eyes warmed her heart as she continued to drive down the busy street. She allowed her thoughts to wander as she navigated through the city; she tried to prepare herself mentally for the inevitable challenges that lay ahead of them. She was now a single mother of a small demon child, and she didn't exactly have a job or a plan! Inuyasha hadn't exactly given her much time to pull everything together, he had pushed forward with the divorce and since she had stupidly signed a prenup, he left her with the clothes on her back and a broken heart.
The last few months had been a shit show between the constant fights, divorce proceedings and packing, she hadn't had a moment to think. She had left behind every piece of who she used to be; the wife of Inuyasha Tashio, the housewife, the perfect neighbor! The woman who attended neighborhood watch meetings, the woman who baked vegan gluten free cupcakes for her son's bake sale. The woman who scheduled in sex with her husband, and massaged his tired feet while diligently listening to him complain about his parents.
She had been the perfect wife or at least she thought she had been, she remember the day he told her of his infidelity. The shook had frozen her in place, as he droned on and on about what he had done and how long it had been going on for. She remembered just wanting to escape, wanting him to shut up; so she locked herself in the bathroom, she sat on the cold tile floor angry and confused. She hadn't even seen Inuyasha before she left, the coward hadn't been home in the past few weeks.
She sighed as she pulled up to a brownstone walk-up,copper stone stood tall against the brick outlay, the arched doorway laid out beautifully as she stared at the oddly coloured green door, she parked along the sidewalk and sat in the rental car quietly, taking in a deep breath before she dialed her dear friend again.
"Hello"
"Hey Kagura, it's me. Is Sango there" she asked tilting her head back, eyelids sliding closed.
"She ran to Bed Bath and Beyond, are you here?"
"Yeah I'm outside" she said quietly
"Okay, I'm coming"
She hummed listening to the line disconnect; she waited as the exhaustion of the week finally began to seep into her bones. She jumped at the sound of a light tapping on her window, she looked up and smiled at the wind socresses waving. She took the keys, and unlocked her door before climbing out of the rusted car.
"Hey" Kagura said softly, pulling her into a tight hug.
She sunk into the demoness embrace, allowing her to hold her in place.
"How are you?" Kagura asked, concern shining in her ruby eyes
"Fine" she lied, earning a questioning look from the demon, she exhaled when the raven haired woman's gaze found the small boy in the backseat.
"He's hungry, and a little cranky" she said apologetically.
Kagura shrugged, and opened the backseat peeking her head into the rusted shit bucket.
"Hey little man, you remember you're Aunty Kagura?" Kagura said softly unbuckling the quiet boy from his booster seat. She pulled him from his seat, and balanced the small child on her hip easily, she ruffled his hair lovingly.
"Hello Aunty Kagura," Shippou said quietly, his wide blue eyes finding his mothers.
"Why don't we get inside? I called Naraku, he's going to swing by and help us unload everything" Kagura said walking towards the townhouse.
"Oh Kagura, I can do it! Just give me a few hours" she said standing on the sidewalk, watching the demoness walk up the brown steps.
Kagura looked down at the blue eyed beauty, and shook her head. She turned around and kept walking up the steps, stopping at the door she looked over her shoulder and said teasingly "Just come inside chicken! "
Kagome sighed, and followed her, she jogged up the steps pausing to take one more look at her new street before disappearing behind a green coloured door.
"Did you find the place alright?" Kagura asked leading her into the living room
She nodded as her eyes wandered throughout the large living room; a mauve coloured rug covered the floor shielding her feet from the cold wooden floor beneath. Two velvet couches framed space, allowing for plenty of room to move around, a large bookcase sat comfortably against the wall beside a wooden desk.
"The place is pretty big, so you two can have some space" Kagura said bouncing Shippou happily
She nodded as she turned around and spotted two big beautiful bay windows, a smile tugged at her lips as she watched strangers pass.
"That's Sango's very part of this walk up, the windows" Kagura swooned
She turned around gingerly, facing the demoness she said sincerely"I promise we will be out of your hair in barely a few weeks"
Kagura frowned and rolled her eyes, looking up at the small human she said firmly"Stop that! You both are welcome here for however long it takes for you to get back on your feet"
"Kagura I don't-"
"You're not chicken, just accept the help and shut up" Kagura chuckled, placing the ginger haired boy on the comfy couch.
She folded her arms, and sighed "Argh I hate that nickname"
Kagura laughed, and said "Tough"
She opened her mouth but was cut off by a loud shriek, she jumped at the sharp sound, widened eyes softened as they laid upon her oldest friend.
"San" she said quietly
Sango rushed forward, arms open wide, quickly embracing her tightly.
"You're home now" Sango whispered against raven hair
The dam, she built in her mind, broke at those three cried hysterically gripping Sango tightly, she hadn't allowed herself to feel any of the pain that bubbled inside of her, she simply put on a brave face a soldered forward. She didn't have time to break down, the whirlwind of her divorce had kept her busy but standing in her new "home" holding her friend, suddenly her reality dawned on her.
"Shush it's okay, you're home now" Sango repeated holding her tightly
She sniffled pulling away from Sango, she sighed as she wiped her face, she looked over to Shippou who snuggled closely on the couch, fast asleep.
"So the little man just likes to sleep eh?" Kagura chuckled
She laughed, and smiled as she said "Yeah he loves a good nap"
"So basically he's like every man" Sango said
"Can I get a old fashion, and a bourbon neat" a woman spoke firmly
He nodded, his hands moving robotically as he prepared the requested drinks.
"Sesshomaru we've got a problem"
He poured the old fashion, and placed the glass infront of the woman clad in a business casual jacket.
He looked over at the waitress, eyebrow cocked and he said "What?"
"Jak called in again" Rin huffed
He rolled his eyes, and stated "He was dumped again'
She nodded, and said "Yep and now we all have to pay for it"
"Hn i'll call Sango" he said pointedly, as he poured the bourbon neat
"27.50" he said bracing himself against the cool countertop
The woman nodded, and handed him a fifty dollar bill, she said "You're cute, keep the change"
He nodded, and took the money before turning around and rolling his eyes.
"That woman is old enough to your mom" Rin said as she leaned against the bar
He chuckled and said "Don't let Kimi hear you say that"
"Where is the Queen Mother?" Rin laughed
"In the back, she's changing our menu" he said
"Again?" she sighed
He shrugged, and pulled out his cell phone, dialling the familiar brown haired woman, he waited for her to answer.
"Hey" Sango said
"Can you come in tonight?"
"Oh gee hello to you too, I'm great actually! Thanks for asking" Sango said sarcastically
He rolled his eyes, and leaned against the bar "Jak called in, he was dumped"
"Damn again?!"
"Hn"
"Alright, I'll come in but I need a favor"
"What kind of favor?"
"I have a friend who needs a job and -"
"I don't need another waitress" he said firmly
"Then she can work the bar with you, come on Sesshomaru! She really needs a break" Sango huffed
"Why can't she get a job somewhere else?"
"She's new to the city"
"She's never worked at a bar" he stated
"Well no but-"
"Sango, we're incredibly busy! Summer is about to start which means we will be swamped, I can't afford to train someone whose never worked in a bar or at all for that fact" he said bitterly
"Sesshomaru come on, she really needs some help! She's going through a lot and-"
He stopped, closing his eyes firmly, he bit his lip and said pointedly "bring her with you, tell her to wear black"
He hung up, and cursed softly under his breath, he stretched his back and said "Watch the bar, I'm going to back"
He walked past Rin's confused face, and pushed through two black swinging door, into the busy kitchen. Dodging the staff, as they pumped out order after order, silver hair swinging freely behind him as walked. He leaned against the doorway, eyeing the older demoness sitting behind the desk, he huffed, shaking his bangs away from his eyes.
"Yes Sesshomaru," Kimi said, looking up at her son through her eyelashes.
"Incoming new bartender" he said boringly
Kimi frowned, and said "When did you interview someone?"
"It's Sango's friend"
"You hired her without speaking to her, Sesshomaru-"
"Yes I did, hand me the black apron" he said stifling a groan
She huffed pushing herself up from the chair, she grabbed a black apron and tossed it over to her son. She sat down, and crossed her legs, eyeing the demon in front of her; it was unsettling how alike they looked, if she didn't know better she would've thought she created this ethereal being on her own.
"If only" she thought
"Sesshomaru-" she said
"Mother"
She groaned, and rolled her eyes "I hate it when you call me that"
He chuckled dryly "Hn"
"Argh quit it with monosyllabic responses"
"Hn" he smirked
"Oh just go!" she huffed, training her eyes onto the laptop
"Aren't you supposed to be on a date?" he asked
"I'm not going" she said
A slender eyebrow cocked as he said "why pray tell is that?"
"I just don't want to go"
"Mom, you should go. It would be good for you to get back on the horse again"
She rolled her eyes and said "I'll date when you do"
He huffed, and said "Well guess we will be in the nursing home together"
She choked, and laughed wholeheartedly.
"I'll be changing your diaper, while we watch reruns of golden girls"
"Oh god, just shoot me now" Kimi laughed as she watched her son disappear from her line of sight.
The evening went by quickly, the bar had a consistent stream of regulars and newcomers since it's opening five years ago. They're growing popularity was both a blessing and a curse, they certainly made a ton of money but the work itself was tiring and taxing on the pair. They had a small staff, hiring people who either desperately needed a break or needed the money, they remained loyal to their staff and in turn they were rewarded with it. They had five waitresses in total: Sango, Rin, Mirkou, Jak and Ayame; and eight kitchen staff; they happily alternated everyone so they could all have enough days off to enjoy with their families or school, whatever they needed. The rustic bar had been Sesshomaru's idea, he had graduated university and decided that working for someone was simply not in the cards for him. His mother had been working as a sous chef in a hotel restaurant for years, and he thought it was a waste of her talent. He worked plenty of unsavory jobs, and applied for hundreds of different grants to finally bring his vision to life; and now the bar not only paid for itself but allowed him to open a tattoo parlor in Brooklyn. The Up & Up was not only a tourist attraction but provided a hot spot for locals in Harlem, and The Moonbeam tattoo parlor was quickly gathering attention as the best place in Brooklyn.
Sango and Kagome arrived quickly, and in the nick of time as patrons poured into the bar.
"Sango grab tables one, five and seven quickly; once their orders are in! Help the back prep limes we are out" Sesshomaru ordered
"Okay! This is Kagome, Kagome this is Sesshomaru"
He looked over at her quickly only to double take, he took in the dainty woman beside the bar. Long flowing ink coloured waves cascaded down her body, and shined against the rose coloured lighting. Her oceanic blue eyes danced behind thick eyelashes clashing against pale skin, a small blush pinkened her cheeks, as his eyes found pouty rose lips.
He cleared his throat, and said pointedly "You're with me, grab that apron and I'm going to walk you through everything while we handle this rush"
She nodded, grabbing the black arpon on the bar.
"Good luck" Sango whispered shoving their purses behind the bar
She tucked a loc of hair behind her ear, and pushed past the silver haired man
"Do you know basic drinks?"
She nodded, cracking her knuckles and said "Yes I do"
"Okay, make a vodka tonic, and two mojito's! Each glass is coloured based on the tables, even numbers are red and odd are blue. Even numbers are placed on the right and odd on the left! Tonight we have Sango, Rin and Mirkou as our wait staff. Mirkou is handling the even numbers and Sango and Rin are handling our odds! Understand?" he said coldly
"Yeah I get it"
She turned around and grabbed the bottle of vodka, pouring it into the glass and chasing it with tonic. She garnished the glass with mint, and continued to work through the orders as Sesshomaru shouted them at her.
She huffed as she moved quickly, trying to keep up; she placed a red glass on the counter and turned around to make the next one.
"Kagome, red glasses on right!" Sesshomaru said firmly, moving the glass
"Sorry, sir"
He rolled his eyes, and said coldly "I'm not your father, it's just Sesshomaru"
She bit her lip, as his tone froze her briefly.
She sighed and continued moving; trying to prove her worth; much to Sesshomaru's surprise she picked everything quickly, only spilling the liquor a few times, and forgetting a few orders. They worked alongside each other in tandem as the night dwindled on, she sighed as she made her last drink for the night, her hands sticky and arms heavy. She walked over to the sink and sighed as the warm water woke her tired muscles.
She watched a small woman bounce over to her, a smile beaming on her face.
"Hey I'm Rin" Rin said excitedly, her hand shot out
Kagome smiled, and shook her hand softly "Kagome"
"That's Mirkou, and Ayame" Rin said pointing at the arguing pair sitting at the empty table
"They're always arguing, they need to just shut up and screw already," Sango said, leaning against the bar.
"Oh god no! They'd make a shit couple" Rin laughed
"Yeah well not all of us are you and Koga" Sango laughed
She and Sango stood behind the bar, as a silver haired woman appeared from the backroom. She was slightly taken back, the beautiful woman moved gracefully towards the bar, grabbing a glass and pouring herself a drink.
"We always do a shot after a busy night" Sango said happily, she grabbed two shot glasses and pour the clear liquid.
Rin followed suit, and poured four tequila shots.
She eyed the drink, and shot it back quickly. The liquid burning as it descended down her throat, she coughed.
"Oh another virgin down" Ayame laughed
Rin grabbed the tip jar, and began counting quietly as they chatted around her.
"Welcome to the Up & Up Kagome" Mirkou smiled, taking her hand, caressing it softly
"Mirkou if you don't stop touch her, Ayame is going to kick your ass" Sango laughed
Kagome took her hand back, and watched the pair yell at each other once again, she looked over at Sango who merely shrugged.
"4'569$ in tips" Rin said excitedly as she finished counting the pool
Sesshomaru hummed, as he locked the door tightly and shut off the front lights, his back turned as he said "Not bad for a Wednesday"
Kimi placed small white envelopes on the bar, and divided the tips into small amounts between the amount of people who worked tonight.
"Alright there's four waitresses tonight, one hostess, one bartender and four kitchen staff so you all get 456.90$ each" Kimi said separating the change from the bills
Kagome's blue eyes widened as her mouth hung agape, she whispered "four hundred fifty six dollars"
"Mhm yep and that's on top of our bi weekly paycheck" Rin beamed, jumping happily
"Wait, we get paid hourly too?" she said shocked
"Yeah, Sesshomaru and Kimi are pretty great" Sango said smiling at the elder demoness
Kagome watched the pair behind the bar, she noticed the identical markings that adorned their pale faces.
"They own this place? and they're related?" she whispered asking her friend
"Yeah! they do, and they're mother and son" she said clarifying
"You did good tonight" Kimi said, placing the white envelope in front of her.
She touched the white paper delicately, as she bit her lip.
"What's your availability? We need your SSN and a direct deposit form-'' Kimi droned on as she zoned out. The sound of the demoness' voice muted as tears pricked her eyes, she opened the small envelope and sucked in a breath as a single tear slid down her cheek.
"Honey, are you okay" Rin's voice rang through her ears, shaking her from her trance.
She wiped her face, and said "Yeah sorry it's been a long day"
"Sango said you're new to the city-" Rin said
"Rin" Sesshomaru chastised
"What?! I'm only asking what everyone wants to know" Rin shrugged
"Yeah I'm new, and can I email you a copy of my SSN? I also need to set up a bank account"
"We can do that tomorrow together" Sango said reaching over, and rubbing her back lovingly
She nodded
"You don't have a bank account?" Rin asked
"Rin! Nevermind her, she's noisy as hell" Kimi said glaring at the small human
"Just text it to me, Sango has my number," Sesshomaru said, turning on his heel, his back disappearing behind swinging black doors.
Kimi nodded, and said "Can you work tomorrow night? we need someone for the rush since Sesshomaru's got a few back to back appointments"
She nodded, looking up into amber eyes "Yeah of course Mrs.'s " she said, waiting for a response
"Just Kimi" Kimi said waving her arm dismissively
"Kimi got it! Thank you again, for taking a risk on me"
"Don't thank me sweetie, Sesshomaru's the one who made the call"
She looked up to thank the silver haired man, only to be rewarded with the view of his back as he disappeared in the backroom.
Okay so it's my first time doing a Sesshomaru and Kagome pairing, and there will be a ton of twists and turns! So hold on, it's a bumpy ride!
As for Bad blood and The Longest Ride, they will be updated next week. Work will be revving up, as well as classes after the holiday so I will be updating once a month, and if I can twice.
