Chapter 4: Stupid
Kirinmaru sat anxiously in his office chair, peering out the window. He watched the sunrise beyond the horizon and sighed as the light reflected off the buildings; it had been five years since he had been back in this bustling bustling city. After spending so much time abroad, soaking up the culture, food and enjoying the solitude; he was less than eager to return to his previous lifestyle of late nights in his lab, bad takeout and meetings that should've been an to his sabbatical he had been a man who believed in hard-work, and dedication; work hard to play hard but as he got older the shadow that haunted his dreams seemed to follow him into the day and suddenly his work was no longer his solace; golden eyes followed him everywhere he went further letting him realize that he had spent his entire life pining after someone he could never have; on principle.
In order to chase away the shadows he started drinking heavily and when that no longer worked he started using drugs to wash away the feelings of loneliness. He'd cling to anything with legs, and bury himself in them in an effort to block her sad eyes from his mind. He didn't understand why after all those years why she was such a trigger for him but after his mental breakdown; he realized it was because he was still in love with her.
It felt like a cruel joke when he bumped into Kimi at the train station the night he returned. He supposed the fates were testing his resolve, and he failed; instead of walking away and ignoring her presence, he approached her and then found her workplace and demanded to see her. Now he was calling her every night, and taking her out for dinner, breakfast whatever time she could spare,he wanted. Her scent clung to his clothes after she embraced him, and for the first time in years he had slept peacefully; in the same clothes.
"I've got fucking issues" he thought to himself as he groaned, he pushed himself up from his chair and walked over to the door. He gave the skyline one last look before exiting his safe space, and walking into the piranha tank that was Tashio Industries. People smiled sweetly as he walked by, women swooned at the sight of him; in his youth he had been women repellant. Urkel glasses and lanky but he hit thirty with a vengeance and he became a magnet, his unruly curly red hair seemed to calm and was a luscious wavy curtain; his chest and shoulders widened and filled out; thanks to a personal trainer and the right foods. He towered over many, with an air of playful mischievousness and if his body wasn't enough to lure women in for a night of debauchery; his smile certainly was. He seemed to master his sexy smirk, paired with his innocent seeming pale green eyes; he was like a sex weapon on every woman expect the one he truly wanted.
During his life he grew to love tattoos, and the meaning behind every piece. He spent thousands on the art that filled his skin; under his suit he was marked up like a subway in Harlem, which only added to his bad boy appeal.
He reached the conference room, and was greeted with pleasantries. His eyes reached the back of the room and found Toga nestled at the head of the table; everyone watched their exchange with interest as he gravitated towards the silver haired alpha. A full smile sat on Toga's face, causing him to frown at the sickly sweet greeting.
"Toga" he said firmly, he watched the argent haired demon rise from his seat and greet him. He shook the hand presented to him, and nodded, taking his seat beside the man, he leaned against the office chair and willed himself to care about the presentation in front of him.
"We're very excited to announce Takahashi Industries 20th annual gala's theme this year will be decadence. An all white party for many of our partners and their wives to enjoy a night of opulence. We will be honoring our Co president Kirinmaru Oka, and his return with the Humanitarian of the Year award"
He chuckled internally as board members clapped robotically, he simply nodded in acknowledgment and allowed the intern to drone on about the preparations. He gazed at his old friend briefly, he frowned at the pursed lips and sudden tight appearance Toga had, he looked entirely uncomfortable; which was strange considering everyone here was kissing his ass.
"Wonderful! get intouch with our event team and get started on the preparation" Toga said loudly as he rose from his chair. Kirinmaru watched him cautiously, and followed the speeding demon, he nodded at the board members and followed his old friend out the door.
He passed through a slew of employees, and waved as he moved through the crowd. He stood in front of Toga's assistant and said sweetly"Can you hold his call for the next hour sugar", the woman blushed deeply and nodded. He pulled open the large wooden door and shut it abruptly, he watched the silver haired demon chug a glass of amber liquid quickly. He sighed and leaned against the door.
"Tiring of the attention already" he said, smirking, earning a chuckle from the dog demon, he watched Toga walk over to the chair nestled beside the window.
"When did you return? I would've sent a car" Toga said, shielding his face as he looked out the window.
Kirinmaru raised his eyebrow, and scoffed at the thought. He said " A while ago, I needed to tie up a few loose ends before returning to real life"
Toga hummed and motioned for him to sit; he walked towards the dog demon and sat across from him. Crossing his leg quietly he waited for the dog demon to speak; Toga leaned against his chair and looked over at his friend. It had been five years since he'd seen his friend and business partner, the dragon demon had suffered a mental breakdown. Toga had found him on the floor of his penthouse apartment, surrounded by empty bottles, drug paraphernalia and hookers; he never considered himself a man of faith but after dragging his friend into the bathtub to wake him from his drugged haze, he started praying.
They never talked about that night, he had demanded that the red haired demon take a sabbatical and clear his mind; rehab was the first part of it.
"How are you feeling?" Toga asked carefully
Kirinmaru laughed before he said "I'm not going to break Toga, I'm fine."
Toga sighed, and looked over at the wall intensely wanting to avoid the dragon's gaze.
"We never talked about what happened Kiri" he said softly
Kirinmaru sighed and leaned back against the chair, he rolled up his sleeves and said "Do we have too?"
Toga frowned "I found you on the floor of your apartment covered in vomit, half dead! Yes we fucking having to talk about" his voice cracked as he remembered the day vividly, acid burned his throat as the images passed through his mind.
"I was so focused on this place, the contracts and the money that I didn't even noticed that you were having a hard time" he whispered
Kirnmaru sighed, and unbuttoned his jacket nervously, he cleared his throat and said "I'm not your responsibility Toga"
Toga groaned, and tilted his head back "It's not about that! Alright I've let things slip between the cracks, I've chosen the wrong things" Toga said frantically earning a look of confusion from the red headed man.
"Toga, I'm fine alright! If anything comes up I'll-"
"You will come to me! I don't care how small Kiri, I can't lose you too" Toga said softly, concerned, shrouding his face, his head falling into his hands.
Slightly taken back, Kirinmaru nodded. It had been a long time since Toga had called him that childish nickname.
"What's going on Toga?" Kirinmaru pushed
Toga looked up at him, and said "What do you mean?"
Kirinmaru sighed "I've known you a long time Toga, you're not the kind of man that gets weepy over shit like this! What's on your mind?"
He shook his head and said quietly, his voice cracking "I'm an idiot"
"Yes, what the point" Kirinmaru laughed
Toga looked up at him, golden eyes filled with tears. Kirinmaru stretched his shoulders, and nervously adjusted in his seat, he'd only seen Toga cry one; when his son had been born. An eerie feeling passed through him, as he watched tears roll down pale cheeks.
"Talk to me old friend" he said softly
"I'm about to be fifty and I'm looking back on my life and realizing that I've made so many mistakes! They haunt me Kiri" Toga blurted out
Kirinmaru craned his head, trying to understand and waited for him to continue.
"I've worked myself to the bone to succeed, and provided some sort of legacy but what has that gotten me! An idiot for a son, a robot for a wife and a hole in my heart the size of Russia" he gasped as tears slid down his face.
Kirinmaru hummed, and listened to his friend attentively.
"I don't know what to do" Toga whispered
"What happened while I was gone?" he asked
Toga closed his eyes, and said "Inuyasha cheated on his wife, and abandoned her and his son"
The words hung in the air; the air became thick with a sudden shrill of sadness and longing. Kirinmaru shook his head in disbelief as he slowly started to understand Toga's sudden outburst. He swallowed his words and took a deep breath as he tried to steady his heart
"He's your son Toga, it seems to run in the family! As for your wife, she's the one you chose and that's something you have to live with" he said coldly as he rose from his seat, he looked down shamefully at his friend and scoffed.
"Quit chasing the past Toga, you did what you did! Move on, I'm sure they have" he continued, as he walked over to the door, pulled open the heavy wooden door.
"Kiri I made a mistake, I have to do something! It's driving me crazy" Toga cried
Kirinmaru slammed the door shut, and whipped around; anger brimming through his forest coloured eyes.
"Don't beat around the bush Toga! Do what? Hmm? Start a new family, get a new wife and son? That'll be 3-0" he said harshly
Toga glared through his tears, and said lowly "Low blow Kirnmaru"
He rolled his eyes, and folded his arms in front of his chest. He said angrily "Say what you mean Toga! No else is here, you can fucking admit! Be a man, and fucking admit it"
"I MISS HER OKAY" he roared loudly causing the images on the wall to shake, Kirinmaru stood in front of the emotional dog demon completely unfazed.
Toga racked his hands crazily through his hair, and whispered "I miss both of them"
Kirnmaru chuckled dryly "It's been 20 something years Toga, it's a little late"
"You don't understand, you don't have children" Toga said quickly, instantly regretting his words.
"You're right I don't" Kirinmaru said numbly
"Kiri I didn't mean-"
Kirinmaru shook his head, and said "Drop it! Just do me a favor, and quit looking for a reason to walk away! You want your marriage to work, then do the work! You want your son to be a better person, show him what a man is and for fucksake! Quit chasing ghosts"
He turned on his heel, leaving the silver haired alpha alone with his thoughts. He rolled his shoulders, and pulled his jacket walked towards the elevators fuming, avoiding the glances and bewildered stares. He darted into the metal container, and kept his composure until the doors slid shut. He groaned loudly, and rammed his fist into the door, he clenched his jaw tightly and punched it again and again until his hand was reddened by the force.
He swallowed the lump forming in his throat, as he felt tears prickle in his eyes. Toga certainly knew how to push his buttons, and gain a reaction from him. The pair had been friends since they were kids, and the asshole secretly knew him better than anyone. The selfish idiot always got whatever he wanted, with just a flash of his smile leaving him with crumbs he left behind.
He was tired of Toga's toddler-like antics; normally he would've stayed and comforted the dog demon but the last few years had changed him completely. He pushed the guilt that crept into his mind, down and concentrated on his breathing. He knew he should've told his old friend that the woman Toga was craving had stumbled back into their lives but selfishly the words died on his tongue.
The loud ding of the elevator shook him from his thoughts, he exited the metal container and nodded at the door man before exiting the building; a black town car waited for him. The driver opened the back door and slid inside; he allowed his head to dip back against the headrest.
"882 Jamaica Avenue" he said sternly
He closed his eyes, and struggled to even breathe. His heart thumped in his chest loudly as he struggled to keep the tears from spilling, his mind whirled around those simple words.
"You don't understand, you don't have children"
He always wanted a family, some kids and a wife to come home too but he had stupidly given his heart to someone who never noticed him. Toga was the one who didn't want any of it, he acted like a child that would never want to settle down but as fate would have it. It was Toga who ended up with what he desperately wanted, leaving the redhead to watch the love of his life love another allowed the bitter thoughts to run through his mind, as a tear slid down his cheek. It had been torture watching his old friend hold her, and kiss her so passionately. She captured his heart effortlessly; a simple soft smile and lull of her voice captured him completely. Though it never mattered because she never loved him, and she never would.
"Now who's chasing ghosts" he thought
He felt stupid.
He sat comfortably against the seat allowing the tears to slide down his cheek, he was completely lost in his thoughts, he hadn't felt the car stop. He jumped at the sound of tapping on his window, he opened his eyes and squinted adjusting to the light spilling into the car.
"Shall I roll down the window sir?"
He cleared his throat, and wiped his face quickly "Yes Barnabas", he sniffled as the window rolled down. He bit his lip, and glaring golden eyes stared back at him as he tried to force a smile.
She frowned, and said "You've been sitting in front of my place for thirty minutes" she said, wrapping her shawl around her curvy frame. Her eyes dragged down along his face, as she took in his disheveled appearance; the red surrounding his emerald green eyes, the puffed skin and tear stains caused her to bite the inside of her lip. She reached inside the car, and pulled the lock open, swung open the door and slid into the car.
"Could you drive down Jamaica Avenue towards the pier?" she asked the driver kindly
He smiled and said "Of course madam" the darkened divider slid up giving them privacy
He bounced his leg anxiously, his head fell back onto the headrest, eyes trained onto the ceiling of the car,his fingers arched as he dug into the italian leather beneath him. He took in a deep breath, and tried to ease himself into numbness; a state he was all too familiar with. Although it appeared less effective without the drugs.
"Stupid sobriety" he thought dryly
He licked his lips, and swallowed the lump in his through
"Kiri baby" she said quietly, she slid her hand across the seat and gently rested her fingers atop his hands.
His breathing hitched, as he felt her small fingers lace through his; he hated that nickname from anyone else's lips. Tears slid down his cheek, as he listened to her breathing, his ears straining to hear the lull of her heartbeat.
"What's wrong? Are you okay?" she asked concerned
He shut his eyes, and thought "you, you're what's wrong with me!"
He sniffled and said quietly "Can we just sit here? I just need a second"
She nodded, and took his hand into hers, she placed the large hand in her lap and traced her finger along the tattooed line work along the top of his hand. She hummed a familiar tune, providing some semblance of comfort to the dragon demon; unbeknownst to her that with every flick of her wrist he fell deeper and deeper into her trance.
"I love you Kimi, and I'm such a fool for you" he thought as he cried continuously
"A little more to the left," Kagome said, as she chewed on the base of the pen. She watched Sesshomaru and Koga adjust the large heavy mirror that they managed to hoist onto the wall, she craned her head as she tried to figure out what was wrong with it.
"Sessh can you bring it down on your end? '' she asked, crossing her arms in front of her chest.
He nodded, and pulled it down following her orders. He looked over at her stoically, trying to train his eyes on her face. She stood in front of him in a cropped top and some short shorts, that we're clearly a little too short, they hung loosely on his trim hips and dipped slightly as she bounced on her heels.
" 'Gome, how long is this gonna take? I still have to run some errands" Koga said frantically, craning his head
She frowned and asked "What errands, Rin said you were free?"
Sesshomaru smirked, and said "He's has to pick up her gift, their anniversary is on Thursday"
Her lips formed an o,and she nodded her head.
"It's fine! Looks great, thanks Koga" she said quietly, as he nodded and sprinted out of the door.
Sesshomaru carefully released his side, and rolled his shoulders. He reached for the bottle of water on the floor, as she watched her slide onto the bed, her face unreadable.
"Kagome? Is something wrong?" he asked
She shook her head, and cleared her throat "Nah, you can go too! I'm gonna just throw on some pj's and watch a movie" it was a quiet night since Sango took Shippou out to the park, to give her a second to unpack and put together some of the things she bought recently .
He arched his eyebrow, and said "Or you can tell me what's bothering you?"
She waved her hand dismissively, trying to hide the misty look she had in her eyes.
He sighed, and sat on the floor in front of her, crossing his legs he yawned and said "You know I'm old, and sitting on the floor isn't good for my back"
She chuckled, and sniffled "You're only thirty"
He shrugged, and motioned for her to continue talking. He rolled his shoulders and watched her quietly.
She sighed, and said "I guess I'm a little jealous"
He scoffed, and said "of Rin" he looked at her with a confused look on his face, he didn't remember ever seeing her and the wolf demon speak. He cleared his throat "You like Koga?" he asked cautiously.
Her blue eyes widened, and said frantically "Oh my god no no! I just meant that it's hard to see everyone else so happy and in love when you're single and alone"
He nodded, and stated "You miss your husband"
She waved her hands, and groaned "Fuck no! Inuyasha was never romantic! He frequently forgot our anniversary. I think I'm a little lonely"
He hummed as her words hung loosely in the air, his eyes fell into his lap as he allowed a single clawed finger to trace the floorboards. Kagome was a beautiful woman, he'd have to be blind to not notice the slight curve of her hips, and how her jeans appeared painted on most nights. Aside from that, he was attracted to her fiery feisty attitude; although that attraction was slowly growing into something deeper as if he wasn't already having a hard time ignoring the hunger she ignited inside of him.
"He's an idiot, and you should move on when you're ready" he said carefully
She nodded, sniffling quietly; he looked up and noticed her tears, he shot up and walked over to her quickly. He climbed onto the bed and sat next to her, he pulled her close and said "I apologize, I overstepped"
She waved frantically, and said "No it's okay, I'm not crying because of him. It's more like a much needed release"
He nodded, and tucked her head underneath his chin. He held her close to his chest, and they sat in silence. He listened to the sound of her heartbeat, and rhythmic breathing, he rubbed her arm slowly; his eyes slid closed as he felt her lean against him.
It had been sometime before the pair fell back onto the bed, and allowed sleep to overtake them.
"Mama" a small voice rang through the room waking beckoning her from sleep's sweet embrace.
"Mama" she heard as she groaned, feeling tiny hands grip her hair tightly, she squinted her eyes and struggled to pull herself up. Something heavy pinned her to the bed, she struggled to wiggle herself from it's embrace. Blue eye peeled open, and she smiled softly at the tasseled ginger hair glaring in front of her.
"Shippou, what time is it?" she asked as she stretched
"Mama, who's that man?" Shippou asked curiously, eyeing the large demon who held her tightly to his chest.
She looked down at her torso, and her eyes widened at the sight of an alabaster arm wrapped around her midriff tightly. She felt a cool breath on her neck, and stilled from a moment, she bit her lip and gently lifted the large clawed hand as she tried to slide out of the bed. She sighed and sat up straight, she looked back at the sleeping demon and smiled. Sesshomaru laid in her bed nestled into her pillow comfortably, she bit her lip at the serene look on his face.
"Mama, come on!" Shippou said
"Mama, come on! Papa's here" Shippou said quickly grabbing her hand, she frowned at the little boy as he pulled her up on her feet.
She struggled to follow the diligent little boy, as she stumbled down the hallway.
"Honey, whose here?" she asked
"Papa" he said firmly, dragging towards the stairs, she followed after him and halted her movement as she stood atop the staircase. Shippou ran down the stairs, bouncing excitedly as he jolted towards the snowy haired man; she stared at the intruder, blue eyes found honey coloured ones.
"Inuyasha" she said quietly watching her ex husband place the small boy back on the ground.
She tucked her hair behind her ears, and grabbed the railing trying to steady herself. She hadn't seen Inyasha since he blurted out that he was having an affair, he hadn't bothered to show up at the divorce proceedings, or when she had started packing, or when she left. She felt her blood pumping quickly, as her face heated, she blocked out all the noise around her as she walked towards the half demon, a wave of emotion flooded forwards, unstabling her. She had pushed the thoughts of her and Inuyasha, to the darkest space in her mind, but just one look at him now, it threatened to destroy her. She reached the last step, and felt her hands tremble as she planted her feet onto the wooden floor.
"Kagome" Inuyasha said, his deep mahogany voice reverberating through the hallway. She kept her eyes trained onto honey coloured orbs as she stood still, her breath shook as she tried to will herself to speak.
"Papa, can we go to the park?" Shippou asked excitedly bouncing on his heels
Inuyasha looked down at the kit, and nodded quietly as he hesitantly placed a heavy hand on his son's head. He ruffled Shippo's hair and said "Sure, let me just talk to your mom a second okay"
Shippou bit his lip, and nodded before disappearing up the stairs, walking past the stunned woman.
"Hey Kagome uhm you look good" he said nervously
She stared at him, the half demon's slender frame looked out of place in the Harlem townhouse. His shiny suit jacket clung to his body effortlessly, his white hair was pulled away from his face allowing her to stare at him without obstruction.
Her eyes traced the scrunched skin on his nose, the darting of his eyes and the tension around his lips. He stood uncomfortably in front of her, and she chuckled dryly at the way he shuffled his feet nervously.
"Toga sent you" she stated, shaking her head as she crossed her legs; her gaze fell to the ground momentarily.
He scoffed, folding her arms defensively across his chest, frowning at the sound of his fathers name. "Keh I came because I wanted too"
She rolled her eyes, and said "Right after months, you chose now to see your son"
He huffed and scowled "Don't start Kagome okay! I'm here now, can't you just accept that"
She looked up at him, fire dancing in her sapphire eyes "DON'T START WHAT?! Hmm holding you accountable for your fucking shit behaviour" she shouted
Inuyasha's ear flattened against his head, and he said "Can we not do this right now? I just want to see my son and see if we can't have some sort of parenting-like relationship!"
She clenched her jaw and took a step forward, she said lowly "He's not a toy Inuyasha, you can't just pick him up and put him back down whenever you fucking want! He's been a mess since you left, he's been broken and angry"
He scoffed "Him? Or You" he spat
She shifted her weight, and looked at him intensely; she shook her head and said "This isn't about me, you-"
"No it is! You just had to run to my father and pull the victim card"
"The victim card?! I never-" she repeated angrily
"Yes you did, you were angry that I left this sham of a marriage and actually had the balls to be happy so you ran weeping to my father!" he spat frustratedly, running his hand across his face.
She clenched her jaw, and looked at him disgustedly as she voiced, her voice dripping with venom "Lets not get confused, if there's one thing you don't fucking have. It's balls Inuyasha"
His face reddened as he took a step closer to her, a creak came from behind her and he looked up at the little boy standing sadly on the steps, holding an unfamiliar hand. He pulled his eyes from his son, and looked up at the scowling faced man standing beside Shippou.
"Who the fuck is that" Inuyasha said, glaring at the man moving down the stairs.
Kagome's head whipped around, a shocked expression sat on her face. She had momentarily forgotten about the silver haired demon, her tense shoulders relaxed at the sight of Sesshomaru. She sighed as she watched tears slide down Shippo's face, his chubby hand curled around Sesshomaru's finger.
Sesshomaru reached the bottom of the steps, and shot Kagome a stern look before his cold eyes found the owner of the booming voice that awoke him from his peaceful voice.
He arched an eyebrow as he looked at the snowy haired half demon, and said "It would do you well to cease your incessant shouting"
Inuyasha's frown deepened, "Who the fuck are you to tell me how I should talk to my wife" he said angrily
Sesshomaru smirked, and said "Oh she's your wife? She hadn't mentioned anything"
Kagome moved to stand between the two fuming men, she looked over to Sesshomaru and shot him a knowing look. She used that moment to take in the difference between the two dog demons, Sesshomaru stood tall looking down on her and Inuyasha, he was at least several inches taller than her ex husband. Inuyasha's slender frame was due to a life as a runner and a child of wealth, Sesshomaru's muscles that rippled against his white tank top were due to his life as a man who worked with his hands, lifting beer taps and hauling cases of food and wine in and out of the bar.
She was silently amazed at the contrast of the two; Inuyasha's unruly hair was tamed by a million products, and a hair stylist he frequented. Sesshomaru's silver hair fell effortless down his shoulders, a curtain of silver perfection.
"Inuyasha we'll talk another time okay, as for Shippou. Now isn't a good time, he's got school tomorrow" she said, cocking her hip, and placing her hands on her hips.
"Mama please!" Shippou whined, his blue eyes widening as he cried.
She sighed, and frantically looked over at her crying son.
Sesshomaru knelt down, and turned the little boy to face him, his heartbroke as he watched the little boy try to run over to his father.
"He'll come back on Saturday, and play with you all day" he said softly, he looked over at the half demon, glaring at him coldly.
"Won't you" he implied
Inuyasha huffed and said "Kikyo and I-"
"You will be back on Saturday" Sesshomaru repeated, blood red seeping into his eyes as he flexed his shoulders, tilted his head and growled lowly.
Kagome looked at the normally stoic demon, and raised her eyebrows slightly taken back by the demon's behavior.
Inuyasha cleared his throat, and said "Keh I'll be here Saturday!"
Sesshomaru turned his attention back to the small boy, red leaving his eyes and soft gold looking to teal. He smiled quietly and said "Why don't you take my phone and FaceTime Mama Kimi"
Shippo's face lit up, and he rubbed his eyes quickly, earning a laugh from the stoic alpha demon. Sesshomaru handed him his phone, and dialed his mother; Shippou grabbed the phone and ran up the stairs before the other line answered.
Sesshomaru rose to his feet, and looked over at Inuyasha. Anger was apparent on his face, as he closed the gap between himself and the half demon.
"I will make myself clear and brief! If you do not keep your promise to that little boy, I will find you and beat the living crap out of you! Do you understand me?" he said looking down at Inuyasha, his nose barely touching the half demon's face.
Inuyasha smirked "I'd like to see you try"
Sesshomaru smiled coldly, "After I am done with you, your father will have a daughter"
Inuyasha stilled at the strange look on Sesshomaru's face, and backed up an inch. He looked over the mammoth sized man, and said "Whatever, I'll be here. I'll call you Kagome later, we need to have a discussion.
She shrugged, and said "I won't hold me breath"
Inuyasha turned on his heel, and opened the wooden door before disappearing into the late afternoon.
Kagome let out a breath, and shook her head before walking into the living room, she dropped onto the sofa and sunk into the velvet seats. She covered her eyes with her arm, and sighed loudly.
"He's certainly charming," Sesshomaru said, leaning against the wooden beam. He watched her petite frame stand out against the large sized couch.
"He wasn't always like that, or maybe he was and I was just a love sick idiot" she said dryly, tears prickling. He walked over to the couch, and pulled her up earning a groan; he sat against the couch and forced her to look at him.
"You're aren't an idiot Kagome, you were in love" he said factually
She huffed, and looked at him with glassy eyes, she swallowed the lump in her throat and struggled as she said "But apparently it was all a lie" tears slid down her face, as she hung her head.
He watched her curiously, waiting for her to continue,he placed his hand atop her bare knee trying to comfort her.
"He said he wasn't happy and that our marriage was a sham" she cried as he head hung lowly
"Kagome-" he began
She waved her hands as she said "Don't okay, it doesn't matter"
He cupped her chin gently, forcing her to look him in the eyes. He stared into her blue eyes, that tugged at his heart strings and said "I won't claim to be a master at relationships but I believe it takes two, to screw things up"
She nodded, and sighed as she leaned her head against his cold hands
"I thought I was over it all, but then he comes here and finds a new way to break my heart"
Sesshomaru shook his head, and gently said "He can't take what you don't give him access too"
"Easier said than done" she said dryly as she wiped the tears from her face, he nodded and pulled her into his side as he fell into the couch. They remained still, as the evening sky darkened the room; he watched her lip tremble as she cried quietly against his chest, he held her tightly and tried to comfort her.
He couldn't understand how her ex husband could be so utterly foolish, to abandon his wife and child as if they were simply toys to be degraded. He felt a certain kinship to Shippou, he understood the pain and confusion the young boy must have felt watching his father shout at his mother. He had been awoken frantically, and greeted by a tuft of ginger hair and tear filled eyes; he had followed the sound of shouting as Shippou held his hand tightly. He had stood atop the stairs, watching a familiar scene as Kagome and Inuyasha argued. His heart ached when his eyes fell to the fox demon, whose lip trembled and sobs wracked his body.
The evening brought back memories that he had long forgotten, and with those memories came the faint throb of pain that was etched into his heart.
"I don't know if it's a good idea," Kagome said, her voice filling the silence and shaking Sesshomaru from his thoughts.
He took in a deep breath and said "What isn't a good idea"
She sat up, and looked into his golden eyes as she said "Letting Shippou spend the day with Inuyasha. I just don't want him to get hurt"
Sesshomaru paused, and wracked his hands through his man, he said "There's a lot in life that you can shield him from but not this Kagome"
She frowned, and crossed her arms infront of her chest
"He's my son, and I'm supposed to protect him"
Sesshomaru turned his body to face her, and said "You're right but it will get easier if you explain to him what is going on. Perhaps protecting him from this is what's causing the friction"
Kagome shot up to her feet, a frown marring her face. She huffed "He's five years old, he doesn't understand what's going on! He's only a child, his whole world has been blown up and you expect me to sit him down and give him all the sordid details!"
Sesshomaru sighed, and pushed himself off the couch, he stood infront of the fuming raven haired woman.
"He will need answers, if you chose to limit the interaction between him and his father"
"LIMIT?! He's the one who hasn't seen him in MONTHS! Now you're expecting me to just hand my child to him! You're out of your fucking mind" Kagome yelled, she turned her back to the demon.
Sesshomaru remained calm, and took a cautious step forward allowing his body to shadow her in the darkness of the living room.
"Kagome, I know first hand how divorces can really screw you up. Believe me, he deserves the truth! It will help him understand why his father isn't coming around, it's hard for a child not to blame themselves for the mistakes of their father"
Kagome turned to face him, and said "How could you possibly know that Sesshomaru? Did Shippou say something to you"
Sesshomaru sighed, and bit his lip. He closed his eyes as memories passed through his mind, not many people knew about his past or his parents. He was a master at keeping people at an arm's length; his closest confidant was his mother in fact. He wasn't one to talk about his father or the adventures of his childhood.
He looked at her softly and said " My parents divorced when I was six, my father left my mother and never looked back"
Kagome's jaw slacked slightly, as she listened to him speak. She hadn't known much about Kimi or Sesshomaru's past prior to the bar. They never spoke about his father; she had assumed the mystery man had died.
Sesshomaru looked up at the ceiling as he said quietly "I woke up one day and he was gone. He never wrote or called, I never saw him again and once we moved from New Orleans my mother stopped talking about him. The last picture I had, I burned in junior high. I don't remember what he looks like"
He chuckled dryly, and continued "He could be standing beside me in a crowdful of people, and I wouldn't know" a familiar pang of pain spread through his chest as his eyes slid closed for a moment.
"Sesshomaru I had no idea, I'm so sorry" she said sympathetically
He shook his head, and said "It happened a long time ago! All I'm trying to say is that the truth could help him understand and possibly set him free. I blamed myself for years, until my mother told me the truth about what transpired between her and my father! It hurt but eventually the pain subsided and I moved on"
Kagome sighed, and shook her head.
"You're mom is an incredible woman"
He smiled softly, and said "She raised me on her own, and even surrounded by the shards of her broken heart, she was nothing but less than what a mother is supposed to be"
She nodded, "Yeah that sounds like Kimi"
"I should get going, I have to open the Moonbeam in the morning"
She nodded and followed him as he walked towards the door, she watched him slide on his loafers.
"What was the truth, if you don't mind me asking?" she asked, as she hugged herself tightly
He shot her a confused look, as he pulled his jacket on.
She waved her hand, and said "You said your mom told you the truth about what happened between her and your dad. What is the truth?"
He nodded, and said plainly "That my father cheated on my mother, and left her for another woman"
