Masao found himself watching his friends as they excitedly babble at each other during lunch after Aizawa-Sensei's announcement besides Sunny who was sulking under his tail, even Haya seemed to be excited under all her nerves while Oswald (as Mineta insisted they call him) was more anxious like Sunny, he was unsure as to how he felt himself about the matter, the thought of being on tv didn't turn his stomach in knots the same way it was crippling Sunny.
But he also was not excited over the event the same way Togata and Hado were, maybe it was ambivalence he was feeling but he wasn't too sure that it was the right word for what he felt either, the training Hado and Togata were planning to do did sound interesting and he wouldn't mind since he wanted to get in some combat training.
They started right away given how ecstatic Hado was, she had all but strong-armed them all to one of the training fields "Alright, before we get started, we should tell each other about our quirks so we can avoid any accidents." Haya insisted and that would be a good idea since some quirks were better trained in isolation from what Midoriya-San told him.
"Okay! I'll go first, my quirk is called: Wave Motion. I can make spirals of energy from my hands and feet, I can control how much energy I put into the spirals which can change whether it's a ticklish kind of hit or knock you off your feet attack." Hado explained first letting off a small yellow spiral before turning her hand toward the dummy right next to her and blasting the thing by putting more energy into the spiral.
"Now your turn Haya-Chan! Come on bestie what's your quirk? You make energy arrows thingies right? Your quirk is like mine, right? How awesome is it that we have matching quirks Haya-Chan?" Hado excitedly peppered the girl with questions and Haya seemed conflicted about whether she liked the attention or not, especially with the girl right in her face.
"Actually, my quirk is Static Shot, I have special organs and glands in my hands that I can use to make arrows out of electricity, or if I build up the charge enough, a spear." Haya corrected clapping her hands together and when they pulled apart bright crackles of electricity snapping between them and leaping off a small solid black arrow shape that formed between them.
"Ooh! But our quirks still match though, we both make energy of some kind right and can attack with it, so our quirks are super similar!" Hado cheerfully told her, and Haya got rid of the arrow she made and rubbed the back of her neck "Well… I guess they are when you put it that way." Haya mumbled looking away, Hado took that as permission to tackle her in a hug while giggling.
"My turn then I guess, my quirk is: Permeation, I got it from my dad, and it lets me turn intangible and go through anything but that includes my clothes, so I'd probably end up flashing you if I used it right now." Togata said unbothered by what he said, which Masao didn't find too odd since Togata probably ended up running around in the nude a lot when his quirk first appeared.
"Well, that's kind of fucked, do you at least have a costume that stays on you?" Oswald asked, likely also seeing the obvious problem of someone in heroics being unprotected and Togata gave them a sheepish grin "My Permeation is stronger than my dad's and I can go through way more things, including my costume and I planned with that in mind but Bullet-Sensei scraped it, she told me that we could make a new costume from my hair so I'm not going to have a costume until after the festival." Togata answered messing with his ponytail.
"Who knew they could make DNA-based costumes?" Togata said laughing it off and Oswald and the girls' eyes went over to him, Masao thrilled "DNA costumes have been around for the last twenty years, they just aren't talked about much out of support circles." Masao commented, "Huh, you sure know a lot about heroics don't you Miyake?" Togata said pleasantly surprised by his wider knowledge of heroics.
Masao shrugged, Midoriya-San knew thousands of facts about heroics, and it was rather easy to have picked up on a few of those facts "My quirk is: Shingleback lizard, I have the same abilities as the namesake, but my tail is significantly longer due to my father's quirk." Masao explained moving his tail to demonstrate it, Oswald sighed and raised his hand and the fingers stretched out to twice their length.
"Guess it's my turn, my quirk is: Human Taffy, while I look more human than my mom but my body is completely made up of taffy, I can contort my limbs and break off small pieces in various shapes like so." Oswald told them forming a small pink shape that looked like a piece of bubblegum, which he offered to Masao, and he took the offered treat and popped it into his mouth.
Oswald's taffy tasted more like an off-brand watermelon than the bitter-salty strawberry of his mom and aunt's candy, perhaps he was a bit too used to no one questioning people offering up pieces of their body as food given the shocked looks from their other four friends "You taste like watermelon Oswald-San." Masao said before swallowing the piece and Oswald nodded "Yeah, mom told me I'd taste like the fruit I ate the most when I was a kid, or berry in her case." Oswald replied making another piece and eating it himself.
"So, are we going to be okay with casual cannibalism now? We're at that point in the friendship? Okay? Is it weird I wanna eat some of Oswald-Chan's hair? Can I even ask that? What is the social etiquette for eating your friends?" Hado asked before turning to Oswald and though he looked a bit exasperated the pinkette took a handful of a swirl in his hair and offered it the girl.
Hado cheered clapping her hands, taking the lock and happily taking a big bite out of it "It does taste like watermelon!" she exclaimed, her words coming out a bit wrong as her mouth was full, she continued to chew on the taffy fully in awe and Oswald's cheeks turned a bit pink clearly embarrassed "Yeah, yeah I'm made of candy and I don't mind letting you eat my scraps, deal with it. It's Amajiki's turn to tell us his quirk now." Oswald told the three that were still stunned, and Sunny shrank when he realized Oswald had put him in the spotlight.
"I think Amajiki-Chan has an animal shifting quirk, right? You looked super cute with those bunny ears!" Hado guessed and Haya frowned "No he could turn to stone before so it's not just animal shifting." Haya corrected and Sunny further hid away behind Togata who laughed it off "You're both half-right, Sunny's quirk is called Manifest. He can change his body into the things he ate until they are digested, and he can do both organic and inorganic matter." Togata explained for the boy and then nudged Sunny.
The boy startled but then plucked a flower, ate it and proceeded to grow a small bouquet of the flower in his palm "Oh my gosh! That's so cool! Wait, wait, wait! If Amajiki-Chan ate some of Oswald-Chan, then can he use Oswald-Chan's quirk?" Hado questioned looking between the two boys wide eyed and Togata was similarly wide eyed, Sunny's mouth opened and closed.
"I-I don't know, I've n-never… ate anyone before." Sunny timidly answered "Then we should total test it! If you can use someone else's quirk by eating part of them then that can change everything." Hado proclaimed with a big wave of her hands "B-but my quirk might n-not work that way, even if I c-can copy Oswald-San's quirk that might b-be just because he's made of t-taffy." Sunny pointed out and Hado blinked.
"Oh yeah, damn. How could we test if you can copy his quirk or his taffy? Maybe you should eat some of my hair then, I'm not made of candy so that should be a good way to test it right?" Hado suggested and Sunny turned pale "I-I'm going to throw up… " Sunny muttered, and Togata was quick to pat his back "I don't think that's a good idea Nejire-Chan, if it worked Amajiki wouldn't know how to use your quirk and might hurt himself." Haya said being a voice of reason.
Hado's shoulders slumped "Right, that would be super bad… and he'd have the same problem with you and Togata-Chan's quirks too." She admitted a bit gloomy, Masao tilted his head, slightly confused how things had spiraled so fast but he was willing to play along with this train of thought and he brought his hand to his arm and began to scratch.
"Dude what the fuck!" Oswald yelled bring everyone's attention to Masao and saw he was removing his scales and his arm was bleeding a little from how he was removing his scales "Amajiki-San has used animal parts before and my scales will grow back soon, I won't miss them." Masao assured though it didn't come out as comforting as he would hope.
"You're cutting up your arm!" Oswald protested pointing to his bleeding forearm and Masao spared a glance at the arm he took scales from "I have some band aids in my bag, and these are just surface level cuts." Masao brushed off and instead offered his scales to Sunny, Sunny looked rather uneasy at the prospect of putting the scales in his mouth.
"Sunny, you don't have to eat them if you don't want to." Togata told Sunny, Sunny bit his lip avoiding everyone's eyes as he ducked his head not saying anything or doing anything until he hesitantly reached out for the scales, Masao had to lower his hand so Sunny could reach them, Sunny took about three of them and slowly brought them to his lips.
Sunny swiped his over his palm and quickly swallowed the scales likely trying not to think about what he just put in his mouth and Masao couldn't quite blame him as he doubted his scales would be anywhere as tasty as Oswald's hair would be "Well, do you feel anything?" the pinkette asked "J-just give me a second." Sunny sputtered and he took a deep breath closing his eyes, Sunny frowned his eyebrows furrowed then slowly… indigo scales began to form on his cheeks and his hands.
Then when they were fully covered in scales Sunny unclenched his hands and slim black claws formed where his fingernails were, opening his eyes he looked back at them with reptilian eyes then upon seeing his hands gasped revealing sharp teeth like Masao's "Amajiki-Chan you can copy quirks! This is amazing! We have to help Amajiki-Chan train this part of his quirk. Amajiki-Chan do you think that you can learn to use my quirk at some point? Huh? Huh?" Hado asked.
Sunny gulped and leaned back away from her as Hado was leaning in far too close for comfort, stepping in Masao picked up Hado by the collar and held her away from the timid boy "We can test whether Amajiki-San can also copy Emitter quirks another time, for now why don't we focus on getting some training in as we planned." Masao reminded the girl, Hado blinked "Okay but you have to buy me more taffy and All Might spider pops." She told him and Masao nodded "Deal, now go train with Haya-San on your aim." Masao said putting her down and instead picking up Sunny with his tail and walking off to a random corner of the field which had a tree.
"I'm going to show you how to climb with those claws, watch me closely." Masao instructed and Sunny just stared at him which he took for agreement, turning to the tree Masao slowly dug his claws into the trunk then began to climb until he high up and he settled on a branch "Your turn Amajiki-San." Masao called from above, Sunny's mouth opened then closed instead of questioning him chose to try climbing up just as Masao had shown him.
Sunny slipped once or twice but he managed to make it all the way up to where Masao was after a small amount of trial and error getting his feet claws working right "Good, now we're going to climb down, you might want to see if you can grow a tail to hold onto the branches as we descend." Masao advised before he climbed down to ground, this time keeping pace with Sunny so he could easily catch Sunny if the boy were to slip.
