Masaru has been known as unremarkable for as long he can remember, his childhood was very bland even after he got his quirk which let him make small explosions of acid, for the first two decades of his life Masaru was just that guy off to the side whose name you couldn't quite remember but swore it was on the tip of your tongue.
And that was fine, as introverted as he was he preferred to be out of the spot light but that blandness wasn't much of a boon in the world of fashion, his parents had asked him over and over again if he was sure he wanted to go into such an overly toxic industry that's lifeblood was scandal and regularly tore the people in it apart, and yes he had his reservations but there was something so gripping about designing clothes that he chose that he just had to risk it.
His beginning work in the world of fashion had been soul-crushing but necessary however grueling it was, establishing a brand was a difficult thing when you're poor and have no real ties to anyone in the business, but Masaru made do and worked hard at his part time job to afford to make ends-meet while trying to make a name for himself.
After four years of toiling though Masaru managed to make his debut and had moderate success right before his twenty-second birthday. He had some scares during the following years, but Masaru maintained his new status in the industry over the next couple of years, at which point the most unbelievable thing that has ever occurred happened to him.
He had agreed to work on some special release dresses for a charity show and while sorting through some accessories that would pair well with the first dress he made when Mitsuki, a young rising star had strutted up to him and made some lewd comments about him to his face.
Masaru couldn't remember much of the few minutes after since he could only scream his head about it, in his defense though how was he supposed to be prepared for any woman being so forward with him, and after the event Masaru had tried to forget about it and brushed it off as maybe the woman was just a flirty person.
Yeah... that plan went out the window pretty quickly when Mitsuki began modeling his clothes and continued to flirt very aggressively with him the entire time, after a month she had eventually bullied him into agreeing to go on a date with her, he had only agreed believing she'd lose interest once she saw how boring he really was and he wouldn't have to deal with her making his face red every time they saw each other.
But then the date went well, a bit awkward during the first few minutes since he had no idea what they were going to be doing but the movie they went to watch was nice and gave them something to talk about at dinner, and before he knew it, he was standing outside Mitsuki's apartment holding the cheek she had kissed a few seconds ago and had agreed to a second date.
Those two dates turned to three then three months later Mitsuki was bragging on tv about having the perfect boyfriend which so happened to be him and wondering how this gorgeous woman had fallen for him of all people.
He wasn't complaining though, Masaru wasn't confident enough to ask anyone out the few times he had caught feelings for someone so Mitsuki's brashness had been something he liked about her, Mitsuki had often taken the lead back then and Masaru would be lying if said he disliked it.
It was probably two months in when Mitsuki had her first fit around him and would've attacked another model if he hadn't stepped in and held her from behind, Mitsuki hid away for two weeks and wasn't replying to any of his texts and that terrified him as he worried about her.
Mitsuki ended up sulking with Inko believing she'd ruined their relationship and that prompted Inko to ask he meet with her to talk things out and being a bit of a desperate simp Masaru had quickly agreed.
That afternoon was the first time he'd had met Inko, Mitsuki's sister and she explained to him about Mitsuki's ED, something that caused her to lash out sometimes when she was stressed and would make her unspeakably angry because of a chemical miswiring in her brain, Inko also probed him asking some questions about the incident and in hindsight Masaru knew she was actually checking to see if he'd be good for Mitsuki.
He did manage to convince Inko to let him see Mitsuki and he spent a couple hours reassuring Mitsuki through a door that he still want to be with her and that a black eye wasn't enough to chase him away, there were a few incidents like that as their relationship went on and he got more confident in his actions around her but still preferred to let her take the lead.
Honestly the first time he took an active role was after they'd been together for about a year and decided he wanted to be by Mitsuki's side for the rest of his life, he'd asked Inko to help him find a ring and despite being very busy with her coursework Inko made the time to help him find the perfect ring, settling on a custom made ring of blue zircon between two black metal bands.
Inko also showed him the perfect place to propose to Mitsuki, the place was hard to get to considering it was on a mountain that didn't have any trails but the burn in his legs was well worth it considering he'd never seen Mitsuki so happy before then, Masaru just wished he was more fit back then, so he could've fully enjoyed the moment.
The wedding was a small but beautiful wedding of ten people including them and Inko somehow held back from crying as she led Mitsuki down the aisle, that day when she took his name and was one of his favorite moments in his life.
The next happiest came two years later when their son Katsuki was born after Mitsuki put herself through almost a year without her medication just to have him, those months had been horrible on her psyche as her ED came back in full swing during the time.
Katsuki had been a spirited baby that started crawling very early getting himself into many things babies had no business being around, introducing him to Izuku had calmed the boy somewhat and for the first time Masaru had ever seen Katsuki would voluntarily take his naps if he could take them with Izuku.
God did his miss those days sometimes, before when the time for their quirks were supposed to come and everything had gone so wrong.
Katsuki had troubles with interacting early on when a kid's personality was first starting to come through and it had been Inko who suggested that Katsuki might've gotten Mitsuki's ED, something that devastated Mitsuki for a while because she hated the idea their son would have to go through what she did as a child.
They had tried their best to help Katsuki handle all the volatile emotions but in all honestly the person who did the most of the heavy lifting had unfortunately been Izuku.
Just being around the boy seemed to calm Katsuki in a way but it had a tradeoff of Katsuki being aggressively protective over the boy, before their quirks came in it wasn't uncommon for them to be called to the kindergarten because Katsuki would've bitten another kid for being mean to Izuku.
That behavior was why none of them bat an eye when Izuku told them his injuries were from Katsuki defending him from bullies, something that wasn't always a lie from what Katsuki had told them in family therapy.
Katsuki would sometimes find kids waiting to play some cruel prank on Izuku and he'd lose it on them, Izuku would often interrupt not knowing anything other than Katsuki was attacking someone and Katsuki never had the heart to tell him about the downright awful things those kids planned.
It was a heart-breaking to hear just what kind of things their classmates planned to do to Izuku and Mitsuki would often leave for a few minutes because the things hit too close to home for her, when Masaru asked why Katsuki never came to them about it if it really got that bad the boy shamefully confessed that it was an issue of pride.
He was supposed to be a hero and what hero let other people deal with their problems when they were perfectly capable of protecting their partners themselves?
It... admittedly wasn't the worst answer Katsuki could've given them but there was this underline of self-loathing to it as Katsuki was clearly blaming himself for not being able to better protect Izuku and probably some guilt over his horrid actions during that time.
But Katsuki has been improving almost immediately once he had some professional help and was removed from that clearly toxic school life, he and Izuku were trapped in, his changes just weren't as obvious as Izuku's but were real all the same.
Which brought Masaru's thoughts back to the present as he continued to prepare lunch for four people, this morning before Katsuki left for school, he had told him he planned to bring over the pair of kids he somehow managed to befriend and to not be embarrassing, something that had made him excited because this would be the first time Katsuki brought anyone home other than Izuku.
And Masaru might've put off his work to make an emergency grocery shopping trip just so they would have enough stuff for their guests to eat since Katsuki mentioned one of them was strictly carnivorous, it would be fine though, Masaru would just have to spend a couple more hours later working on his designs.
Glancing at the clock he saw he wouldn't be waiting for long for the kids to return so he checked on the other things he was prepping to make sure they were coming along knowing that Katsuki will be back any minute.
The sound of the door opening a minute later confirmed Masaru's thought as Katsuki stomped over planning on going straight to the other room with another person following behind him much more hesitant, the most notable thing about the other child was his head being like that of a bird's, Tokoyami if he remembered the boy's name right.
"Welcome home Katsuki." he called out and Katsuki stopped for a second to yell back "Yeah, yeah old man. Patchy and Potty are going to study with me in the living room."
Masaru nodded "Just leave me some space on the coffee table Katsuki." he requested getting a grunt back from the boy as Masaru got to work slicing and dicing the slab of meat he bought earlier.
Halfway through the task Masaru almost jumped when he saw something shyly peeking behind a wall corner, it was bird shaped being made almost entirely of semi-solid shadows and had two glowing yellow eyes.
It took him a second, but Masaru calmed himself as he got back to work since the little thing didn't seem to be threatening, slowly and carefully the shadow being crept closer keenly watching as Masaru continued to prepare the meat until it was peeking over the counter with his talons on it much like a child would.
"Would you like to try some?" Masaru offered and the little shadow gave a high chirp and ducking out of sight before peeking back over.
"C-can I?" a soft, barely there voice asked, Masaru nodded gently motioning the little shadow over with one hand for them to come closer, hesitantly they floated closer revealing the shadows lack of legs and that it's body stretched out and round a corner.
Picking up a pair of chopsticks Masaru took a small chunk of meat and offered it to the shadow unconcerned about it being raw knowing most carnivorous mutant quirked individuals had strong bacteria in their stomachs that prevented most diseases like salmonella.
The shadow opened their beak revealing something that seemed darker than the black shadows that made the being's form and Masaru dropped the little morsel in the void, the shadow's mouth closed and gulped it down before giving a soft happy chirp "Thank you Bakugou-San." they muttered, and Masaru chuckled.
"It's no problem, since you seem so interested would you like to help me make lunch little one?" Masaru asked and the yellow eyes widened slightly. "Can I? I've never cooked before." the shadow told him back and Masaru nodded "Of course, I'm not making anything too complex so I can easily show you everything to do." Masaru confirmed.
Nervous but clearly excited the shadow quickly agreed and Masaru instructed the little being through cutting up the meat and how to measure the spices before adding them to the pot they'd placed the diced meat in to cook, small bits and pieces of meat being fed to the shadow so they could taste as the meat's flavor changed.
Masaru guided the small shadow hand as they stirred the meat until all of the food was ready and the shadow helped him plate up everything looking incredibly happy as they stared at their work, smiling Masaru gently placed his hand on the shadow's head and stroked the soft wispy feathers he felt there, the shadow flinched at first but ultimately melted into the affection with little happy chirps.
"Could you help me carry this out to the boys, little one?" Masaru requested and he gave an energetic nod "Yes!" the shadow chirped quickly picking up two of the four bowls and floated out of the kitchen and over to the living room where the two boys were sitting at the coffee table.
"Dark Shadow?" Tokoyami questioned staring at the shadow connected to his body utterly confused and slightly concerned "Ah, is that what this little one's name? They were quite a big help in the kitchen." Masaru commented as he sat on the couch across from the boys.
"Tch, that's the quirk's name, not Potty's name old man." Katsuki responded as he took a bowl from him and began to eat after setting aside his homework.
"I see, so what is your name little one?" Masaru asked placing the other bowl he was carrying down in front of Tokoyami.
Tokoyami glanced at his familiar and they both seemed to be surprised at the question "My name?" the little shadow asked, Katsuki tsked rolling his eyes.
"Familiar quirks usually have a personal names unrelated to the damn quirk their made from Potty. I'd be more surprised if Patchy here didn't name you." Katsuki commented rudely pointing his chopsticks at Tokoyami.
The two avians proceed to share a glance before the shadow spoke, "My name's Sadi, it's n-nice to meet you Bakugou-San." their voice meeker as they introduced themself.
"It's nice to meet you too Sadi." Masaru replied as he pushed the bowl filled only with meat towards them and they seemed to be surprised "Go ahead and eat up, Sadi. You should enjoy the meal you helped to make." Masaru encouraged.
Sadi hesitated but contently started eating the meat by placing their face into the bowl ignoring the chopsticks inside, gleefully enjoying every bite as he started a simple conversation to get to know Tokoyami a bit better, with Katsuki adding his two cents occasionally.
