Author's Note: Forgot to mention in the first chapter, I am ignoring cannon things I don't agree with. None of the avengers have died. Everyone remembers Peter (hate that they did that). Steve didn't go back in time, etc. Also, it likely won't have many of the Marvel TV show characters unless they are directly connected to one of the Avengers.

Skye's alarm went off at seven a.m. that morning. She groaned and reached over, hitting the screen of her phone a few times until it shut off. A few minutes later a second alarm in the room went off. Skye groaned louder and put her pillow over her head to block out the sound.

Her roommate shut it off and threw a pillow over at Skye. "You know if we don't get up she will come in, and she is a bitch in the mornings."

Skye groaned and took her pillow off her head. "I'm so fucking tired."

"That's what happens when you sneak out and don't come back till almost one a.m.," her roommate said, getting out of bed

"Shut up, Kate," Skye whispered. Last thing she needed was the person who ran the group home to hear that.

"That's the third time this week you have done that. Kind of seems like you want to get caught," Kate pointed out.

"Yeah, that's what I want, to get caught," Skye said sarcastically.

They both got out of their beds and fixed them before changing into what they would be wearing to school and picking up their room. There was a daily check before school of all the rooms. If their room was a mess, that wouldn't go over well. Once they were sure the room would pass inspection they both went into the dining room, where a few of the other kids in the home were serving up breakfast. Everyone took turns doing the tasks around the house, and it switched up monthly.

Everyone sat down and ate before Skye and Kate did their chore of cleaning up the dishes. Room checks were done once everyone was ready. Skye and Kate passed, as they had expected. Morning meds were handed out. They were all soon in the classroom preparing for a day of learning.

Skye was having a hard time concentrating. Her mind kept drifting back to what had happened the night before. She had been attacked, and she had pushed a man three times her size across the alley. And Captain America . . . Captain . . . Fucking . . America – and the Winter Soldier – had seen her. The whole thing confused her. She wasn't strong. She wasn't regular strong, forget super strong. Maybe the whole event had been so traumatic that what she thought was her pushing him away was one of the two Avengers pulling him off her. That made much more sense, so that must have been what happened. Right? She was pulled out of her daze when the instructor said her name loudly.

"Skyler Smith," The instructor said. He had been trying to get her attention for over a minute.

Skye's attention came back into focus. "Sorry," She said.

"You have been distracted during the entire class. You okay?" The instructor asked.

"Yes, sorry." She said.

"Pay attention then," the instructor said before going back to teaching.

Skye let out a breath and forced herself to focus.

At lunch they were all dismissed and headed to the kitchen to make themselves a quick lunch. After lunch, those who took meds were called into the office and given what they were supposed to take.

Skye was diabetic and took insulin with every meal. She hated it. But once that was done, everyone went back to the group meeting room for afternoon group therapy and such.

After that everyone went to do whatever they wanted for an hour before evening chores were to start.

Skye flopped on her bed and started to scroll through her phone. Kate came into the room and started to change into a work uniform.

"I really need to get more sleep," Skye said.

"So, no more sneaking out and risking both of us getting in trouble?" Kate asked.

Skye sighed. "Fine."

"Because, unlike you, I have less than six months left in care. I can't afford to waste any time moving around in the system and not having a steady income from after school work," Kate said,

"Okay, I'm sorry. I'm done," Skye said.

"Thank you," Kate said. "See you later tonight."

"See ya," Skye said before she closed her eyes.

The Avengers had identified the girl as thirteen year old Skyler Smith, and they were trying to do a background check on her. She had been in the foster care system from birth. She had some health issues at birth and had eventually been diagnosed with diabetes. A child with a chronic life long health issue wasn't of interest to most people who were looking to adopt. By the time the girl was ten she had worked her way through ninety percent of all the foster homes in New York and its surrounding states because of her bad attitude and anger issues. She was back in New York. But she had been in group home after group home. Now she was getting into legal trouble with smoking, drugs, and sneaking out late at night. Her record showed suspected ties with a local gang.

"Juvenile delinquent with super strength. That's just what we need," Rhodes said.

"We have no idea what she has been through to make her act out," Wanda told them. "I think maybe she just needs someone who actually gives a shit about her."

"You don't think in the twenty-seven homes she has been in there has been someone who cared about her?" Rhodes asked.

"Maybe, but we don't know what she went through before she got to a home with people who cared. I went through hell in the orphanages. Do any of you need a reminder of what I would have done to Tony if someone hadn't shown me the truth and care that you all have," Wanda said.

"Okay. But she hasn't had the childhood you did. This is America," Cap said.

"And the American care system is far from perfect," Wanda said.

"Okay, before a fight breaks out, why don't we all agree that. no matter what this girl's record is, she is just that a girl who has super strength and who knows what other abilities. Someone needs to go talk to her," Nat said.

They all agreed.

"I'll do it," Cap said.

"I'll go with you," Wanda said. "And we can not let the people in charge of her know what is really going on. She could be at risk if they find out."

"What do you suggest we do?" Cap asked.

"I don't know," Wanda said.

"Well, we all know there are lots of kids out there with abilities. And there is the school for the 'gifted.' Maybe we should see about letting the guy who runs it know about her. I'm sure he would know how to help her." Tony said.

"Stark this girl. There is something about her. I just don't think pawning her off on someone else is the right choice." Steve said

"We could always start a mentoring program here," Bucky said. "That way we can keep an eye on her and help her make the right decision about which side to be on."

"But what will we tell the people who are responsible for her? To get this girl to trust any of us isn't going to be easy. And if we start the relationship with telling the people responsible for her that she was out past midnight, which I'm guessing they don't know, it won't happen," Nat said.

"We can say that we are wanting to start a mentoring program for teens. And because of her legal trouble and her record in the care system she is someone we think will benefit," Wanda suggested.

Steve nodded.

"What if you are asked how you found out about her record?" Tony asked.

"Let me make a call. I can get us a cover story," Rhodes said as he left the room. He came back in about twenty minutes later. "Just say the police mentioned that there were a lot of teens in the system who were falling through the cracks, and that we said we wanted to help. She was the first pick because she seems like a good kid who needs extra guidance," Rhodes said,

"Perfect," Steve said as he looked at Wanda. "You ready?"

"Yes, let's do this," Wanda said. They went to the group home where they knew Skyler was living and told the woman who was running the home the cover story they had developed.

"I think you are going to waste your time with that one, but go ahead," Ms. Torres told Steve and Wanda. She showed them a room where they could talk to her and called Skye to get her ass down there now.

Skye came down slowly. She wondered if she'd been busted.

"Go. In there. And consider yourself damn fucking lucky you are getting this opportunity. Don't fuck it up," Ms. Torres told her.

Skye went into the room and saw Steve Rogers and the woman. "You-you're Wanda Maximoff…Scarlet Witch." She was her favorite of the Avengers.

Wanda smiled. "Yes, I am. Just call me Wanda."

"Okay," Skye said with a small smile before she looked back at Steve Rogers. "And you're Steve Rogers, Captain America," she said.

Steve nodded. "Just Steve is fine."

"W-what are you doing here?" Skye asked.

"Straight to the point. I like it," Wanda said.

"You really can't guess?" Steve asked.

"Nope," Skye said. That was a lie. But, she was wondering how the hell they had found out who she was so quickly..

"You sure?" Wanda asked.

Skye nodded slowly.

"Skyler, come on. You really think I couldn't figure out who you were?" Steve asked.

Skye sighed as she sat down and put her head in her hands. "Are you going to rat me out?"

"Depends on how this conversation goes," Steve said.

"Don't worry. I won't let him," Wanda said with a smirk.

Skye chuckled.

Steve shook his head at Wanda.

"What did you want to talk to me about exactly?" Skye asked.

"How long have you known you have super strength?" Steve asked.

"I don't…." Skye said.

"Lying to us is pointless. We have footage of you using it," Wanda said.

"But… Wasn't that just you throwing him off me?" Skye asked.

"You really don't think you did that on your own?" Steve asked.

"I don't know. I didn't think it was actually possible. I thought I was remembering things wrong…" Skye said.

"No, you did it," Steve said softly.

"Well, I guess to answer your question then, I just found out.." Skye said.

"Okay. Now that you know, do you want to be able to learn how to use it when you need to?" Wanda asked.

"You think that there is any chance in hell I would be allowed to do that?" Skye asked.

"Well, it would have to be kept kind of quiet. We wouldn't be sneaking you out of the house or anything. But we are starting a mentoring program, and we think that you would be a good fit," Wanda said.

"What would you be telling my social worker and the people who run this place the mentoring program is for?" Skye asked.

"Teens who need a little extra help staying out of trouble," Steve said.

"Ah… So you did a background check," Skye said, looking down.

"We did," Wanda said. "And we are not judging you. We don't know what you have been through that isn't in your files."

Skye nodded.

"If you agree to do this, it isn't permission to go around using your strength on anyone you want. There will be rules and expectations," Steve said.

Skye nodded again.

"And that will include staying out of legal trouble and not being out past curfew and such," Steve said.

"Fuck," Skye said softly.

Steve took a breath.

"Oh, yeah, you do not want to swear in front of him," Wanda said with a chuckle.

Skye nodded "Okay, sorry," She said.

Steve nodded. "You shouldn't be swearing at all."

Skye nodded.

"But if he doesn't hear you, there's nothing he can do about it," Wanda said with a smirk.

Skye giggled.

Steve shook his head. "Are you interested in the mentoring program?"

"What will it actually entail?" Skye asked.

"Working on harnessing that ability and testing to see if you have any others," Wanda said.

"If necessary, it can extend out of that as well to homework help and such," Steve said.

Skye nodded again. "You mentioned rules?"

"Staying out of trouble. No drugs or smoking. Or drinking. Being home by curfew and staying away from people who are going to get you in trouble. School is your priority. That will not change. You don't get to use your abilities anytime you want. Unless it is a situation where you are in danger, you don't get to use them outside of when you are training with us," Steve said.

"And if I break those rules?" Skye asked.

"There will be consequences. What those are will correspond with what you have done," Steve said.

Skye nodded.

"That's easy to avoid, though. Just do what you're supposed to," Steve said.

Skye rolled her eyes.

"Respect will be a big thing, too," Steve said.

Skye bit her lip and looked down.

"Does all that seem reasonable?" Wanda asked.

Skye nodded. Honestly, as the conversation had continued, she had become more and more excited. But, she became more anxious about the whole thing, too.

Steve could see by the look on her face that she was nervous.

"Do you have any more questions?" Steve asked her.

"No," She said.

"You sure?" Wanda asked.

"It's just a lot to wrap my head around," Skye said.

Steve and Wanda nodded.

"We will be taking this slow. You will not be forced to do more than you are ready for when it comes to your ability," Steve said.

"You think I might have more abilities?" Skye asked.

"Maybe," Wanda said.

"We will figure that all out, together," Steve said.

Skye nodded.

"We will be in contact with your social worker and set up a time to bring you in for the first mentoring session. Until then, stay out of trouble, Skyler," Steve said as he and Wanda got up.

"Please call me Skye." Skye said.

Steve nodded. "Okay, Skye," He said with a smile.

They said their goodbyes before Steve and Wanda left, leaving Skye with a lot of information to work through and digest.
