Once the house was completely quiet, Skye snuck out and looked around for the ax. She wanted out of there, and not because of anything Thor had done. Rather, she was so overwhelmed, she wasn't thinking clearly.
Thor hadn't really given her questions a second thought. He hadn't been able to pick up on what was going on.
Skye had searched everywhere and couldn't find it. She figured it must have been in his room. She sighed and went back to the bedroom she was staying in.
The next morning she heard Thor in the kitchen and figured this was her last shot. She snuck out of her room and went into his bedroom. She saw the ax and went over to it and took a breath. She wrapped her hand around the base of the handle and tried to pick it up.
Thor had heard her come out of her room and didn't pay much attention until he heard the creaks from above. His bedroom was directly above his bedroom. The floor creaked when someone was walking on it. He had no idea why the girl would be in his room, but he decided to go check it out. When he got to the door and saw her trying to lift the ax, he shook his head.
"Is this why you asked me those questions last night?" he asked.
Skye jumped. "Fuck."
"Go ahead, try and lift it," Thor said. He leaned against the door frame and crossed his arms
"I-I can't…" Skye said.
"Stormbreaker is designed to only work for people who are pure of heart and want to use it for the right reasons," Thor said.
Skye nodded slightly.
"Where did you want to go?" Thor asked.
Skye shrugged.
"You must have had a place in mind for it to have worked at all," Thor said.
"I just . . . I," Skye said.
"I can not help you if you do not tell me what is wrong," Thor said.
Skye shrugged.
"Downstairs, now," he said, his voice stern.
Skye went. As she passed him in the doorway he gripped her upper arm. It wasn't hard, just enough to hold her in place before he landed a hard swat to her backside.
Skye yelped.
"Stormbreaker is off limits to you. And do not curse," he said before he let her arm go.
Skye nodded and quickly went downstairs.
Thor followed, and they both sat down and ate breakfast. Once it was cleared up Thor looked at her. "Go get ready. We are going to help dig people out," he said.
Skye nodded and did so, putting on her warmest pants. They were lined with a warm material. She had received them as a gift from some donation thing at Christmas time. All the girls in the home at the time had gotten a pair. She also put on a hoodie and all the winter gear Thor had bought for her the day before. She went out with him, and she was handed a shovel. She worked with a couple of other people who had come out to help.
When they were finishing up with the final driveway Skye looked at Thor. "Couldn't you have used your ax or something to make it a quick job?"
"I could have, but then what lesson would that have been to you?" Thor asked. "And then the community would get used to me being here, and I'm not here often."
Skye nodded, "I would have done it either way. You wish you could be here more?"
"Yes. But I know that I need to be where the rest of the Avengers are to make sure the rest of the world is protected as well," Thor said.
Skye nodded, "You get homesick?"
Thor nodded, "Do you feel homesick?" he asked.
Skye shrugged not looking at him.
"Were you trying to go back home with Stormbreaker?" He asked.
Skye shrugged. She knew if she said anything she would break down.
They finished shoveling. Thor gently took the shovel from her and handed it back to the person they borrowed it from.
"There is hot cocoa being made for everyone. Do you want to go get some or go back to the house?" he asked.
"I could go for some cocoa," Skye said.
They both went and got some. Skye got lots of attention from the people she had helped. They thanked her, saying that she was a good kid for helping out so willingly.
Skye smiled, "I was happy to do it."
"Whoever has been raising you is doing a good job," an older gentleman said.
"I think it has more to do with who she is," Thor said from behind.
They talked with people for a bit before they started back for the house.
Skye smiled, "you think my DNA plays a role in the kind of person I am?"
"Maybe not DNA, but I do think the adults who have been in your life up till you met us haven't been that great to you," Thor said.
Skye shrugged a bit.
They got to the house and Thor started a fire in the fireplace in the living room. Skye came into the room after removing all the winter gear.
"I think we need to talk about what happened this morning," Thor said.
Skye nodded, "I'm sorry. I won't do it again."
Thor nodded, "were you trying to go back home?"
Skye had thought about it, and the answer was yes. She nodded.
"Well, let me see if you can. If you can, I will take you to see everyone for a day or whatever is allowed," Thor said.
Skye smiled and nodded.
"You need to speak to me when there is a problem," Thor said.
Skye nodded, "I'm sorry. I will from now on."
"Good," Thor said, "because I do not want to have to be hard on you."
"Well, You know you don't have to be," she said with a smirk.
"I do if you do not do what you are told or try and do something like what you did this morning or yesterday," Thor said. "You do not get away with things when you are with me."
Skye nodded. "Okay. I'll behave."
"I would appreciate that," Thor said.
Skye nodded. "I can do that for one of my favorite Avengers," she said.
"Ah, one of your favorites?" we asked with a big smile on his face.
Skye smiled and nodded.
"Who is the other?" Thor asked.
Skye chuckled, "Wanda."
Thor smiled and nodded. "I think she has great admiration for you, too."
Skye smiled, "I hope so."
There was a knock on the door.
"That is probably Valkyrie," Thor said.
Skye got up and went to open the door and let her in.
"Hey. Thor said you wanted to talk to me?" Valkyrie said.
"Yes. I want to apologize for taking off yesterday. It was rude. I'm sorry," Skye said.
Valkyrie nodded, "It's forgiven. Why did you do it?"
"I don't know. I was overwhelmed. And, I guess, a bit homesick," she said.
Valkyrie nodded, "I can understand that."
"Either way, I shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry," Skye said.
"It's okay," Valkyrie said. "I appreciate the apology, though. I would stay, but I have some work to get done," she said.
Skye smiled and said bye to her before she left. She went and sat back down in the living room with Thor.
They finished the day watching more Star Wars.
