Rival for Rolf
Now that the power to Lumiose City is restored, the gate between Route 13 and Lumiose City is now once again, operational, allowing Kevin, Rolf, Jonny, and Nazz to go through it. Soon, the group find themselves back in Lumiose City. The group went to the Pokemon Center to get their Pokemon treated after their battle with Team Flare at the Kalos Power Plant. After that, Rolf went to the PokeMart to the counter.
"Excuse me; but do you know what this is?" Rolf asked a clerk, holding out the red plate he found at the Kalos Power Plant.
"That would be a Flame Plate." said the clerk.
"What does this Flame Plate do?" asked Rolf.
"It boosts the fire type attacks of the Pokemon holding it." replied the clerk.
"You should give that to your Braixen, man." said Kevin.
"Yes; this would be useful to her." said Rolf and he puts the Flame Plate in his backpack. After the group ate at the cafeteria and picked up their Pokemon, the group leaves the Pokemon Center. Rolf lets Braixen out of her pokeball and gives her the Flame Plate; after that, he returns Braixen to her pokeball.
"Now let's find that gym." said Jonny. As they look around the city, they can't help but be astounded by how large it was.
"How are we supposed to find the gym in a city this big?" asked Kevin.
"This is why Rolf prefers the country; less overwhelming, more peaceful." said Rolf.
"Sounds boring." said a voice from nearby. They look to where the voice came from and see a teenage boy with a red, flat top, hairstyle, wearing a blue, denim vest over a white t shirt that had a red pokeball design on it, blue denim pants, and black ankle boots, sitting on a chair with his feet on a small table near a cafe; on the table was a can of soda pop, and also on the table was a black, one strap backpack that also had a red pokeball design.
"Who might you be?" asked Rolf.
"Name's Austin; and personally, I prefer the city lifestyle." said the boy, now identified as Austin. "I mean, city life is exciting; country life is so dull and boring." Rolf begins glaring at Austin with his left eye twitching. "And all those farmers wasting their lives and busting their backs, toiling the field, growing crops, raising Miltanks and Gogoats." Rolf's face turned red with fury, he was grinding his teeth, and his fists were clenched and shaking. "Talk about a lame lifestyle."
"YOU DARE INSULT ROLF'S IDEAL LIFESTYLE?!" said Rolf, rolling up his sleeves.
"If I am, what are you going to do about it?" asked Austin as he stood up from his chair.
"Rolf challenges you to a duel!" replied Rolf.
"You mean a Pokemon battle?" asked Austin. A blank look appeared on Rolf's face.
"Yes; Rolf challenges you to Pokemon battle." said Rolf. 'Might as well; Rolf did not bring fish to duel with.'
"Fine then; I know where there's some battle arenas here." said Austin as he grabs his backpack. "Follow me." He walks off with the group following.
Later in a park, Rolf and Austin were each standing on an end of a battle arena while Kevin, Jonny, and Nazz sat on a bench and watched.
"Let's see how a country bumpkin like you does in a Pokemon battle." said Austin.
"Rolf will have no trouble beating a, um.." said Rolf before turning towards Kevin. "Kevin, what do people call city people?"
"I think they call them 'city slickers'." said Kevin.
"Thank you." replied Rolf. He then returns his attention to Austin. "Rolf will teach this city slicker a lesson he'll never forget! How many Pokemon will we be using?"
"We will use three Pokemon." replied Austin. "Whoever beats the other's Pokemon wins."
"Rolf accepts the condition." said Rolf. Austin pulls out a pokeball that was blue on top and had a red V with three yellow vertical lines in it.
"What kind of pokeball is that?" asked Nazz.
"A Lure Ball; great for catching Pokemon you fished up." replied Austin. "It helped me catch this Pokemon. Relicanth, come out!" He tosses the Lure Ball and releases a brown and tan, fishlike Pokemon. Kevin points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Relicanth, the Longevity Pokemon. A rare Pokémon discovered during a deep-sea exploration. It has not changed in over 100 million years." said the pokedex.
"What type of Pokemon is this Relicanth?" asked Rolf.
"It's part water, part rock." replied Kevin. Rolf pulls a pokeball out of his pocket.
"Skiddo, Rolf chooses you!" said Rolf as he throws Skiddo's pokeball and releases him.
"Okay, Relicanth; use Take Down!" said Austin. Relicanth leaps at Skiddo and rams into him, knocking him back.
"Get ready for recoil damage!" Kevin calls out to Relicanth. But to the group's surprise, Relicanth looked just fine.
"Why does Relicanth look okay?" asked Nazz.
"Relicanth has the Rock Head ability. It makes him immune to recoil damage." said Austin.
"Whoa, that's handy." said Kevin.
"Skiddo, use Seed Bomb!" said Rolf. Skiddo launches a bunch of large seeds at Relicanth which explode on contact with it, doing lots of super effective damage, due to Rose Incense powering up his grass type moves and grass type moves being strong against both water and rock type Pokemon. Relicanth struggled to stay conscious.
"Relicanth, use Rock Tomb!" said Austin. Relicanth drops a bunch of rocks onto Skiddo, hurting him, and lowering his speed.
"Skiddo, use Synthesis!" said Rolf. Skiddo starts drawing in energy to heal himself.
"Relicanth, use another Take Down!" said Austin. Relicanth charges at Skiddo again.
"Skiddo, dodge it and use Vine Whip!" said Rolf. Skiddo jumps to the side to avoid Relicanth's attack and releases a couple of vines from his mane which strike it, doing enough super effective damage to knock it out.
"You did it, Rolf!" said Jonny.
"Good job, man!" said Kevin.
"Rolf is pleased!" said Rolf. Skiddo smiles before he freezes up. "What is wrong with Rolf's Skiddo?" Rolf got his answer when Skiddo started to glow.
"Skiddo's evolving!" said Nazz. Everyone watches as Skiddo starts to change. When he finished, he was now a Gogoat.
"Rolf has a mighty Gogoat!" said Rolf. After Austin got over his shock from his loss and Skiddo's evolution, he returns his Relicanth to its Lure Ball.
"Not bad for a country boy." said Austin as he puts Relicanth's Lure Ball away and pulls a Great Ball out of his pocket. "But let's see if Gogoat can handle the heat. Go, Heatmor!" He tosses the Great Ball and releases an anteater-like Pokemon with a beige head and a red body with yellow stripes. Kevin points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Heatmor, the Anteater Pokemon. It draws in air through its tail, transforms it into fire, and uses it like a tongue. It melts Durant and eats them." said the pokedex.
"Heatmor, use Incinerate!" said Austin. Heatmor releases a fireball from its mouth, and it hits Gogoat, doing super effective damage.
"Gogoat, use Rock Smash!" said Rolf. Gogoat charges towards the Heatmor, rears up, and slams his head onto Heatmor, damaging it, and weakening its defense.
"Hurry and use Flame Burst!" said Austin. Heatmor unleashes a stream of fire from its mouth up into the air and it forms into a ball; it then bursts, sending multiple streams of fire onto Gogoat, hitting him, and knocking him out.
"Dude, that's harsh." said Nazz.
"Yeah, deal with it." said Austin, making everyone frown at him. Rolf returns Gogoat to his pokeball.
"Rolf is proud of you, Gogoat." said Rolf. He puts the pokeball back onto his belt and pulls off another one, then throws it, releasing his Diggersby.
"Heatmor, use Lick!" said Austin. Heatmor runs at Diggersby with its tongue sticking out and licks him when it got close enough. Diggersby suddenly starts to shudder.
"Yeah, I wouldn't want to be licked like that either." said Jonny.
"It's not disgusted, it's paralyzed." said Austin. "It's a secondary effect of Lick."
"Keep fighting, Diggersby!" said Rolf. Diggersby suddenly breaks through paralysis, surprising Austin.
"How did it do that?" asked Austin.
"Rolf and Diggersby have that kind of bond, dude." said Nazz. "We saw some stuff like that during the Eds' battles during that Lily of the Valley Conference."
"That is good." said Rolf. "Diggersby, use Mud Shot!" Diggersby releases a large glob of mud at Heatmor, hitting it, and doing super effective damage. Suddenly, Heatmor takes out a yellow berry with a green stem and eats it.
"What did that Heatmor eat?" asked Jonny.
"A Shuca Berry." said Austin. "It reduced super effective damage from ground type moves. And just so you know, my Heatmor has the Gluttony ability which makes him eat berries sooner when its at half its stamina or less."
"Yes, well Mud Shot also makes the Pokemon it hit slower." said Rolf. "Diggersby, use Double Kick!" Diggersby runs at Heatmor and hits it with two strong kicks to its torso.
"Heatmor, use Fury Swipes!" said Austin. Heatmor slashes at Diggersby repeatedly with its claws.
"Diggersby, use Strength!" said Rolf. Diggersby runs up to the Heatmor and uses his ears to pick it up and throws it past Austin and into the barricade around the arena, knocking it out.
"Awesome!" said Nazz.
"Just one more to go, Rolf!" said Jonny. Austin growls as he returns his Heatmor to its Great Ball.
"Rolf is doing well." said Rolf. Austin puts his Heatmor's Great Ball back onto his belt and pulls out another one.
"Maybe; but let's see you beat this Pokemon." said Austin. He then throws the pokeball, releasing a purple, quadrupedal Pokemon with a long horn coming out of its forehead. Kevin takes out the pokedex and points it at the Pokemon.
"Nidorino, the Poison Pin Pokemon, and the evolved form of a male Nidoran. An aggressive Pokémon that is quick to attack. The horn on its head secretes a powerful venom." said the pokedex.
"It's a poison type, dude." said Kevin. "Diggersby has an advantage."
"Very good." said Rolf.
"But Diggersby is part normal type, so let's see it handle this move." said Austin. "Nidorino, use Double Kick!" Nidorino charges at Diggersby and lands two solid kicks to his body, doing super effective damage.
"Do something, Rolf!" said Jonny.
"Diggersby, use Flail!" said Rolf. Diggersby starts swinging its ears around wildly, eventually landing a strong blow to Nidorino. After that, Diggersby started to look ill.
"I should tell you that Nidorino has the Poison Point ability." said Austin. "That makes it so that any Pokemon that hits him with a part of its body could end up getting poisoned."
"Remind me not to let my Pokemon hit another one with that ability." said Jonny.
"Good call, dude." said Kevin.
"Nidorino, use Horn Attack!" said Austin. Nidorino charges at Diggersby and jams his horn into Diggersby's belly, hurting him. Diggersby tries to recover, but the poison going through his body takes its toll and he passes out.
"Oh, poor Diggersby." said Nazz. Rolf then returns Diggersby to his pokeball.
"Rolf is pleased with your strength, Diggersby." said Rolf. He puts Diggersby's pokeball back onto his belt and pulls off another one; he then throws it, releasing his Braixen.
"Remember that Nidorino's Poison Point ability, man!" said Kevin. Rolf looks towards Kevin and nods, then focuses his attention back on the battle.
"Briaxen, use Psybeam!" said Rolf. Braixen holds out her branch and a beam of psychic energy comes out and hits Nidorino, doing super effective damage. All of a sudden, Nidorino starts stumbling around.
"It's confused, Rolf!" said Jonny.
"Nidorino, Poison Sting!" said Austin. Nidorino gets through his confusion and unleashes glowing purple darts from his mouth, and they hit Braixen. "My Nidorino's holding a Poison Barb, which powers up his poison type attacks." It suddenly turns purple under Braixen's eyes. "And it looks like Braixen's poisoned." Briaxen coughs and loses some stamina from her poisoning.
"Fire Spin!" said Rolf. Braixen holds out her branch and releases a stream of fire from it that circles around Nidorino, damaging him.
"Hurry and use Fury Attack!" said Austin. Nidorino tries to charge at Diggersby, but it trips over his own feet, making it fall to the ground. Braixen coughs and loses more stamina.
"Braixen, use Ember!" said Rolf. Braixen holds out her branch again and this time, bits of fire, which are now powered up thanks to Braixen's new Flame Plate, come out and hit Nidorino. He tries getting back up, but he reaches his limits, and he passes out.
"Rolf won!" cheered Nazz.
"Righteous!" said Kevin.
"Rolf is the victor!" said Rolf. Austin growls as he returns his Nidorino to his pokeball. He then walks over to Rolf and gives him pokedollars.
"You got lucky this time." said Austin.
"Perhaps Austin would like a rematch." said Rolf as he glares at Austin.
"We can settle this at the Kalos League." said Austin, surprising everyone.
"You're going for the Kalos League?" asked Kevin.
"Yeah, I just beat the gym here and got my fifth badge." said Austin.
"Speaking of the gym here, do you know where it is?" asked Nazz.
"You see that building over there?" asked Austin as he points towards a tall tower at the center of Lumiose City. "That's the gym."
"Rad." said Nazz. Austin then frowns at Rolf who frowns at him back before he turns and walks away.
"Looks like you got a rival now too, Rolf." said Jonny.
"Yes. Rolf will be ready if we battle at the Kalos League." said Rolf.
"So, what now?" asked Jonny. Kevin looks up at the sky and sees it was getting dark.
"Let's call it a day, dude." said Kevin. "Besides, Rolf needs to get his Pokemon healed after that battle."
"Rolf agrees with Kevin." said Rolf. "Rolf's Pokemon should be at full health before facing the gym leader."
"And I'm getting kind of hungry." said Nazz.
"Let's go then." said Kevin as the group head back to the Pokemon Center.
Rolf now has a rival of his own. What awaits their possible rematch at the Kalos League? Wait and find out.
