Monday night Allison, Asher and Leo were hanging out at home.
"Mooo," Leo yelled as Allison went to grab a glass of milk.
"Fuck you," Allison snapped holding up her middle finger.
"Allie don't react," Asher said as he grabbed cookies from the pantry.
"Why is he such a jerk," Allison whined.
"Ignore," Asher said, "are we watching that show?"
"Down stairs," Allison suggested.
"Hey slut," Leo said, "quit whining."
"Leo I don't want to do this," Allison said, "at least I'm not high."
"He's high," Asher said, "Allie just leave him, you can't reason with him when he's high. It's not good for you or for our baby. Let's grab our snacks and watch downstairs."
"Down stairs so you two can mess around," Leo yelled.
"Leo back off," Asher tried, "Allison is tired, I worked all day, just give us some space."
"Tired, what did you do all day," Leo yelled.
"I went to school, finished my last family studies project and my history paper, worked for a few hours made and cleaned up dinner," Allison snapped.
"Enough," Owen roared coming in from the garage, "this is not what I want to come home from work to. All three of you."
"Dad," Leo yelled, "they want to go down and fool around."
"Leo, you have no idea how uncomfortable I am right now," Allison yelled, "I just want to watch our movie in peace."
Owen tried to diffuse the volatile situation between the teens, "have you had dinner."
"I made chicken stir fry with veggies," Allison said, "Leo refused to eat."
"It's not real food," Leo argued.
"There's leftovers in the fridge for you and Teddy," Asher said, "we didn't know when you would be home."
"I'll heat up some," Owen said, "thank you for making dinner you two."
"It was all Allie," Asher said.
"Leo upstairs," Owen commanded.
"Why," Leo yelled.
"Because I heard how you were talking to Allison," Owen said.
"Dad he's high," Allison said.
"I'm not," Leo yelled.
"I'll be the judge of that," Owen said.
Owen strode over to Leo and looked closely at his son.
"What did you take," Owen asked.
"Nothing illegal," Leo said.
"What did you take," Owen repeated.
"Nothing illegal," Leo snapped.
"Tell me or we go for a test," Owen replied.
"No," Leo refused.
"Allison, Asher downstairs now," Owen commanded. Observing Leo he decided his son wasn't fully high but had definitely used something.
The young couple took their snack downstairs.
"Your dad is going to lose it," Asher said when they closed the basement door.
"He is," Allison agreed, "and he's nicer than mom about it."
"It's pot," Asher said.
"I know we smelt it," Allison said, "it's way too strong."
"Relax and let your dad deal with it," Asher said, "we have your chips, cookies, the weird banana and yogurt combo you like. "
In the living room Owen yanked Leo off the couch, "I'll spare you the embarrassment of doing this in front of Allie and Asher."
"Don't baby them," Leo yelled.
"They know you're on something," Owen said, "I'm saving your dignity. Tell me what you took or we go to the hospital for a drug test."
"Weed," Leo said, "just weed."
"From where," Owen asked.
"It's legal," Leo assured, "the dispensary by work."
"I don't care that it's legal," Owen roared, "we do not use any type of drug in this house."
"Yet you give my sister psychoactive drugs," Leo roared.
"Antidepressants as prescribed by a physician and overseen by her drs," Owen said, "why Leo?"
"You don't care," Leo snapped.
Owen changed his tactic, "why? What's bothering you?"
"I'll never be the girls," Leo said, "they're both really moms and Allison is really yours. I'm not. The girls get knocked up and you celebrate. I have a girl in my room and mom loses it."
"Leave Annie out of this she was 29 and married when she had Ellie. Allison, we were shocked but your mom and I made a choice to support her," Owen said, "this isn't about the girls, this is about you and your choices. When did it start?"
"October," Leo said, "my friends were."
"You can not use it in this house," Owen said, "you do not come into this house high on anything. That is an expectation of every person in this house. Leo, you need help."
"You can't operate on this," Leo snapped.
"I can't," Owen agreed, "but there are things we can do to help you. If you want them."
"Like what," Leo asked.
Owen replied , "rehab, support groups, counseling. Medication if needed. We will get you the help you ask for, you just have to tell us you want it."
"If I don't," Leo asked, "it's pot, it's not a problem. It's not addictive."
"Go 48 hours without it," Owen said, "when was the last time you used."
"After dinner," Leo said, "not that that was dinner."
"Your sister loves stir fry right now and lots of veggies. It's healthy," Owen said.
"I'm a guy," Leo said.
"So am I, so is Asher," Owen said, "we'll eat it because Allison made it. You want something else you cook. It was Allison's night to cook and shop tomorrow is yours."
"When did this start," Leo asked.
"We've told you and you never step up so your very pregnant sister is covering for you," Owen said, "Allison can't do her turn for the week and yours when she's exhausted with a newborn. You need to do your turn. Plan the menu, see what we have then I'll take you to get what you need when you sober up."
"Make Allison do it," Leo said, "she's the one who messed up."
"Yes they made a choice they wouldn't have made sober," Owen said, "but they have stepped up, they have made the mature decision to raise their baby and be together."
"What does that have to do with me cooking," Leo snapped.
"We all take a turn, Allison, Asher, me , mom, you, then there's Sunday dinner and mom or I sort out the other night," Owen said, "you are 19 years old, you are a man. I was the man of the house at 9. You can make a meal. One meal, do your own laundry, mom should not be doing your laundry."
"She did Allison's," Leo said.
"Yes she will move your laundry from the washer to the dryer if she needs the washer," Owen said, "you will do your own laundry, take your turn to cook and clean up dinner and get to work on time."
"I just spent three weeks with the army, cut me a break," Leo snapped.
"Were you high there," Owen asked.
"I was too scared to use," Leo said.
"Then don't do it here," Owen said, "you have a choice and we can help you but I cant make you want help. I am here when you want it. Leo this is a hard road and a lonely one."
"Whatever," Leo said.
"You know you can go without it so do it," Owen said, "do it for yourself."
"I can," Leo said, "I don't want to. It's not hurting anyone."
"I'm not compromising," Owen said, "you come in this house high again you will find another place to live."
"Leo," Teddy said coming in.
"He says cannabis," Owen said, "I want a test."
"Why," Teddy asked.
"Because no one notices what I do," Leo said.
"We do," Teddy said sitting beside him. She knew Owen had been playing bad cop so she would play good cop to get Leo to do what they needed him to.
"I'm 19," Leo said, "you took Annie back at 19."
"Yes thats when I started to see her," Teddy said, "Leo theres a lot of that story that you don't know. Things even I don't know."
"What about Dan why did him and his wife give her back," Leo asked.
"Annie had another sister named Jessica, she died 10 years ago," Teddy said, "Jessica had a brain tumor and multiple mental health issues. Jessica tried to kill Annie on at least 2 occasions. She nearly succeeded the summer Annie was 19. Dan and Leslie were overwhelmed. Annie clung to me. Then I don't know the details of what happened between them when Annie was in med school. Leo I'm not Leslie and dad isn't Dan."
"I want to meet my birth mom," Leo said, "I need to know what shes like."
"Leo she's dead," Owen said, "we told you that. Her name was Brittney and you came into the hospital with her after she overdosed."
"What about her family," Leo asked.
"They tried for two years to locate them," Teddy said, "we don't know. I'm sorry I wish we had answers."
"Can we find out anything about them," Leo asked.
"You could do a DNA test and see what that shows test for ancestry and disease markers," Teddy said, "Annie did because we can't get information on her biological father. We know his name but he refuses to believe she's his even with the DNA test. We can help you get as much information as we can. Dr Baliey did Annie's test but there's easier ways now. Leo, we can't help you right this second. We need you to be sober to do it. Go bring me what you have and I'll get rid of it."
"I don't have more," Leo lied.
"Nothing," Teddy said, "you know that there is no drug use in this house. You use your out. That is the bare minimum we expect from all three teens in our house."
"Asher," Leo asked.
"You live in this house thats the rule," Owen said.
"Leo your laundry is in the dryer," Teddy said, "I don't do your laundry."
"You did Allison's," Leo tried to argue.
"Yes I did a basket of hers while she was at work last night," Teddy said, "she doesn't have many clothes that fit and when she had tried to do laundry during the day I was doing laundry so I said I would do it. She had made the effort to do it but the machines were in use."
"We know your upset," Owen said, "we want to help."
"Tell us how you need us to help," Teddy said, "we are here. Leo I love you and I am never ever going to let you go."
"We are always going to be here buddy," Owen assured, "we love you."
Downstairs Allison was sitting on an exercise ball bouncing.
"What are you doing," Asher asked.
"Amanda said bouncing on the exercise ball would make it easier for the baby to drop," Allison said, "they're due in 10 days."
"Are you rushing them," Asher asked.
"No," Allison said, "but I'm done being pregnant. I feel like it's been an entire year."
"Just the school year," Asher said, "10 days babe."
"I want to meet them," Allison said, "I know their movements and how they push against me when they wake up."
"I want to meet them two," Asher said sitting on the coffee table and putting his hands on her bump.
"They like that," Allison said.
"I can feel them," Asher said, "hey little one, not much longer until we can see you. Your mom and I have everything ready for you. We just need you now."
"They like when you talk to them," Allison smiled.
Asher slid onto the floor so he was eye level with her bump, he kept talking to the baby making Allison giggle.
"Are you laughing at me," Asher asked.
"No," Allison said, "so boy or girl?"
"I still say boy," Asher said, "right Alex?"
"Everly," Allison argued, "right princess?"
"Princess," Asher asked.
"I can't wait for them to smile and laugh," Allison said.
"I just want to see them," Asher said.
"What about," Allison said, "I don't know if I can handle labour."
"We can do it together," Asher said, "I will be with you every moment."
"But we don't sleep in the same room," Allison said.
"Then you call me as soon as you think it even could possibly be labour," Asher said.
"They say most start in the middle of the night," Allison said.
"Amanda said you need to be relaxed," Asher said, "how do I help you stay relaxed."
"This," Allison said, "I might keep coming down at night."
"I hate lying to your parents," Asher said.
"I'm trying to convince mom that you can move to my room," Allison said, "maybe when they come."
"Can you stop bouncing so we can talk," Asher asked, "you're going to wear yourself out."
"It feels good," Allison said.
"I have other ways to make you feel good," Asher said.
"A massage," Allison asked.
"I can," Asher said, "are you sore again?"
"Always now," Allison said, "I can't do this much longer Ash. I can't keep feeling like this."
"What can I do Allie," Asher asked.
Allison began to cry, "I don't know. My back hurts, I haven't slept properly in weeks. I want real sleep. I don't want to wake up because I have to pee for the 25th time, I want to actually sleep and were looking at months of me not sleeping to feed them."
"Isn't that why we bought the pump," Asher asked, "so I can do some nights and let you sleep."
"I just want to sleep now," Allison cried.
"Come lay with me," Asher said, "let's go lay on my bed and leave the door open. On top of the blanket, fully dressed so if they come down and your parents will they don't get mad. Your dad would not take that well today."
"We almost got caught two nights ago," Allison said, "dad would snap tonight."
"What do you need right now," Asher asked.
"I want you to hold me," Allison said, "I can only fall asleep when you hold me right now."
"Lets go lay on my bed for a bit and you can get a bit of sleep," Asher suggested.
"Will you rub my back," Allison asked.
"I will," Asher promised.
