The command tent made for an impromptu family gathering as Lucina stood awkwardly under her father's gaze. The prince kept looking between her, Cynthia, and Morgan. Eventually, the silence burst with a royal sigh.
"So, you're my daughter as well."
"Yes, Father."
"And you," He looked to Morgan, "Are her daughter?"
"Yep," She nodded energetically.
"He married my daughter, Sumia," Chrom bemoaned to his wife, "If he were here I'd punch him."
"Now, now, he didn't know. Lucina didn't even know."
"I'm sorry, Father," Lucina bowed her head, "I knew ever since I rejoined, but…I did not want to interfere. More than that…I was afraid of how people would react. How…Robin would react."
"Hey," Chrom pulled her into a hug, "Don't apologize for being human, but know that you can trust me. I'll support you however I can."
"Thank you, Father."
"Hey!" Morgan popped up between the two on her tiptoes, "So, you're grandpa Chrom?"
"Er, hi," Chrom pulled away a bit, "And you're Morgan, yes?"
"You betcha!" She grinned, "Royal Tactician extraordinaire. For all your tactical and royalty needs."
"You're a tactician?"
"Mmm hmm," Morgan nodded enthusiastically, "I trained under Father. I'm the best there is aside from him."
"I see. I'd hate to ask, but maybe you could help finish some of the plans he left."
"Sure thing! Is he on some top secret mission?"
The prince looked to Lucina, "You didn't tell her?"
"I…no. Morgan, perhaps we should talk. Will you join me on a walk."
"Huh? Sure," Morgan shrugged and followed along without any fuss. This left a concerned royal family to wait and see what would happen.
Lucina took Morgan a short ways into the surrounding forest. She wanted to be out of earshot of the camp, but more than anything, she was stalling. No one should have to tell their child one of their parents was gone, but Lucina still felt a level of guilt. Perhaps this was only fitting.
"So what did you need to tell me?" Morgan asked as she skipped along beside her. She seemed so innocent. What had her life been before that had led her to this point? Perhaps it was better not to remember.
"Morgan," Lucina stopped her daughter by placing her hands on her shoulders, "There is something you need to know about your father. About Robin."
"Oh? Is he even more awesome than I remember?"
"No, it's not that," Lucina took a deep breath, "In our last major battle…the odds were against us. We were hitting a stalemate. Your father, he saw a way out, but it was dangerous. He…bought us the time we needed, but in order to do so, he…he did not make it back."
"W-what do you mean?" Morgan's carefree face fell, "Like…he's late?"
"No," Lucina shook her head, "I'm…so sorry."
"N-no, he…no!" Morgan clutched her head. Lucina hesitated, but she pulled her daughter close.
"I know…better than most, that this may not provide much comfort, but he was a hero. We owe our lives to him. Several times over at this point." Lucina was right. Her words did little to ease Morgan's pain. Instead, she offered herself for the girl to cry into. All the while being eaten away at by her own guilt, but she could not bear to tell Morgan her own part in Robin's fate. Morgan did not need the additional suffering anyway.
"Sorry," Morgan pulled away, still sniffling, "Everyone's probably trying their hardest. I shouldn't break down like that, should I?"
"No," Lucina wiped her daughter's tears away, "It's natural and healthy. I cried for what felt like days when I lost my father."
"Thanks, I…weren't you like ten?"
"Close, but the sentiment holds true," Lucina smiled softly, "Cry all you need to."
Morgan shook her head, "No. I have to be strong. Grandpa said he left plans, right? Well, I might be the only one here that can finish them. I'll make sure this army he fought for will make it to the end!"
"Are you certain? That is a great burden."
"Yeah, I know, but, hey, it's my duty to use my abilities to my fullest, right?"
Lucina swallowed. Her duty, "I suppose so. Just…do not be afraid to state when you are overwhelmed."
"Don't worry, Mom. I'll be fine."
"Yes, I hope so."
"So what do we do now?" Yarne asked his companions after a long bout of silence. They had been this way since they decided to hide after Morgan blew their cover. Fortunately, the information was not widely disseminated yet, but it was only a matter of time.
"I don't know," Owain swept a hand through his hair, "I'm still coming to terms with Lucina having a kid."
Severa snorted, "She was definitely one of the last ones of us I expected to have one."
"Yes, I'm sure you expected to have a couple yourself first," Inigo wagged his eyebrows making Severa clench her fists.
"What's that supposed to mean, Loverboy?"
"Oh, just that I found something interesting when I was tending to the group's weapons. I'm sure that he-eep!" Inigo quickly shut up as he found said sword at his throat.
"Not. Another. Word."
"Please say another word," Nah grinned.
"We are getting off point," Laurent sighed in frustration, "The fact of the matter is we're faced with a choice. I doubt that Chrom will force the issue, but, honestly, they will likely surmise that we are at least not from this world. Still, we can choose to ignore any rumors as best we can. There is also the matter of Lucina's wishes."
"So what should we do?" Noire asked quietly.
"Whatever you wish," All eyes turned to Lucina, and they noted Morgan by her side. A few were suspicious, but stayed their tongues. Lucina smiled at her loyal friends, "I am sorry for what I put you through for my own selfish sake. However, now that the truth is out, I leave the decision to you. Whether to embrace this world or not, I won't stand in your way."
"I suppose it would be nice to talk to them," Inigo sighed before blushing, "But the thought makes me really self-conscious."
"I do want you to remember," Lucina addressed them, "This world is not the same one we left. However," Lucina smiled at her daughter, "The bonds we share are just as real. Bound by birth or not, we can be family. If you so choose."
The others looked around, a bit uncertain, "As I said. I will not force you. Cynthia and I will introduce ourselves publicly. It is impossible to hide that much now at least. Your relations are yours to disclose or keep secret."
"Thank you," Owain smiled and nodded at his cousin, "We will think on it."
"That's all I ask."
"Oh, and…it's good to have you back."
Lucina frowned, "I'm not sure I am, but my behavior was shameful. I shall endeavor to remedy that. Thank you for not abandoning me."
"Wouldn't dream of it."
Lucina tried not to draw attention to herself as she walked through camp. It had been so long since she openly carried Falchion like this, but with their secret out, she finally wielded her family blade again. She did not feel worthy to do so, but she would fight for her daughter. If nothing else, she would keep going for her.
Speaking of which, Lucina was trying to find her. She was hoping to spar to see what Morgan was capable of. If she was going to come with them, she needed to be able to defend herself. There was also the question of Falchion, and if Morgan could wield it.
With a sigh, Lucina finally found her in the command tent. She was busy scurrying about, looking over notes and making her own. She could see Robin in her alright, and the sight made her melancholy. So much so, she did not act on her plans and just watched for some time before Morgan finally noticed her.
"Oh, Mom! How long have you been there?"
"Not too long," She shook her head, shaking unpleasant thoughts loose, "I see you're hard at work."
"Dad did most of the work," Morgan moved some papers around to reveal the map, "All I really need to do is pick our battlefield. I've narrowed it down to two that could give us an advantage."
"I see. I admit, I led troops, but strategy was never my strong suit."
"Oh, well, that's fine. Like I said, Dad did most of the work."
"Yes, just be careful not to overwork yourself. Would you like…to get lunch?" Fighting could wait. For now, they could just talk.
"I guess it could not hurt. I was about ready to give my recommendation to Gramps anyway."
Lucina smiled at the nickname, "I'm sure it will be a good one. You are so much like Robin after all."
"Well, I got some stuff from you too. Like being super duper strong. Dad always said I had your stubbornness too."
"Oh did he now?"
"Well, you said I got his too. I think. I wish I could remember more clearly. It's still only bits and pieces. Father's memories are so crisp and clear, but I still remember you. It's just…fuzzier. More than I can say about most things though."
Better than she felt she deserved, "Do not rush it. We'll manage. I know what it is like to look back into your past and see nothing. At least you have some memories to ground you. We may never find out why you came here, but while you are here, I'll protect you with everything I have."
"Hey now, I'm not a child. I'll protect you too."
Lucina smiled, "Very well. May we continue together."
A/N: So I forgot I had that bit about Robin at the beginning, so I edited the last chapter.
