Chapter One: Viral
NYC, Night Time
Chaos was going on in New York City as Penn Station was being quarantined after a viral outbreak with several dead already.
It's said to be caused by a terrorist among the dead but those watching over the scene have yet to share any information.
In a morgue of Gentek, to study the bodies of the dead from the outbreak, two bodies lay on slabs for dissection. Two men who died first but not of the virus but of gunfire. The only other thing they have in common is that they have the same leather jacket.
One was a 29 year old man with slicked back curly brown hair and blue eyes, with slightly tanned skin though it was paled due to death. His attire consists of three layers of clothes in addition to plain blue jeans and black shoes; a button-up white shirt with a protruding collar kept partially buttoned, a plain gray hoodie, and a black leather jacket with a red interior, two horizontal white lines on each sleeve, and a loopy red winged insignia on the back. This is Dr. Alex Mercer
The other body was a young man, ten years younger at 19, with messy red hair dyed black and blue eyes. His skin was lightly tanned. He wore white sneakers, blue jeans, a black t-shirt tight enough to show his muscles, a unzipped red hoodie, and the exact same leather jacket as Alex. This is Jason Todd.
Two male scientists in hazmat suits came into the morgue.
"Hey, I knew this guy", one says, pointing to Alex Mercer, "He was Blacklight."
"Yeah", the other responds, "well now he's ex-Blacklight".
"his name is... Mercer, Alex J.", the first guy says, reviewing his paperwork on the clipboard, "Next of kin, Mercer, Dana A. is that his wife?".
"Don't know", the other replies, preparing their equipment.
"Do you think this has anything to do with the test subject on 51?", the first one questions.
"I have no idea, and even more, I don't want to know", the other dismisses, "Just give me the 8" blade", to which the first guy does, "We'll start going in through the torso".
However, Jason suddenly gasps awake, startling the two Gentek scientists. He sits up as they back away, knocking things over.
"Get the fuck out!", the first one yells and the duo run away.
"Get the kill-team in here now!", the other yells as Jason stumbles off the dissection table.
The alarm blares as Jason gets to his feet, touching the body of Alex in the process before following the scientists out the still open door. He follows the scientists path till he's going out the front door. He goes around some boxes off to the side of the buildings courtyard as a helicopter lands on the ground.
"Move, move, move!", the leader calls out as the soldiers disembark the copter.
One of the hazmat scientists was arguing with the commander with said commander was ordering them to be detained and they were authorized to shoot and burn their corpses if they didn't listen. To which the soldiers soon did on the scientists.
"Ahh shit", Jason groans out before soldiers noticed him.
"All points, priority target, priority target!", they called, "Take him down!", and they all opened fire on Jason.
He screams in pain as bullets went through him and splattered the area in his blood.
However, he soon got to his feet as though he wasn't injured, "What's happening to me?!", he hen looked ot his left at a tall concrete wall with barbed wire and went to traverse over it to escape the soldiers that tried to kill him.
"Get him!", the commander called before they opened fire again. Jason had jumped onto the dumpster before the wall then jumped over the wall in a single bound.
"That was... easy", Jason notes. He can barely remember his life before today but he knows he never jumped like that before.
Looking to his current left, he notices as metal gate that lead to the road with cars driving by.
"I need to get the fuck out of here... I don't know how long I can keep this up", Jason groans before heading for the gate. He prepared to jump as these black and red aura of some kind surrounded his legs before he then jumped over the gate.
Just then, another helicopter appears to his right, from the east.
"No, no, no!", Jason grunts, their were civilians around him and these fuckers were all to trigger happy from what he's seen.
Jason began running down the street, towards the west, faster than he normally could. He ran for about three block without tiring as the copter shot at him. Eventually, the shot a rocket at him that missed but struck a taxi parked off to the side of the road. It was sent flying at Jason to which he instinctively caught it, with his arms coated in the black and red aura.
He held the taxi for a moment as he speaks, "What the hell are you going to throw at me next, huh? What do you want from me?!", before throwing it at the helicopter as some men propelled out of it.
"I can't believe what I just did", Jason says as he doesn't believe he could do that before, "God, I hope no one was in that car." He then ran for a wall before anyone could shoot, but somehow he was then running up the wall. Not taking a moment to process he decides he needs to get to higher ground. He then traverses to the tallest building near him, with the same aura covering his limbs as he climbs, taking a moment to simply cling to the wall, before continuing to the roof.
Some more helicopters soon approach after he gets onto the roof, "Great, now I got to kill them to", Jason sarcastically comments. He then grabs the conditioners and the roof and tosses them at the two copters, damaging their blades and causing them to explode and fall as the pilots call out for help.
"This can't be happening", Jason got down from the building and was walking down the street, his hoodie zipped up with the hood over his head. He thought about the day as he remembers more of his life before New York. Remembering his time on the streets of Gotham as the year as Robin, working with Batman. How he died and came back before eventually leaving Talia for New york, everything afterwards is a blur, he doesn't know how he got like this or who was attacking him.
Eventually, he stumbled into an alley before laying against a wall as he was still filled with bullet holes right now. While drifting into unconsciousness, another one of the soldiers approaches him from in front.
"Hostile sighted, contact imminent", he says into his radio, his rifle trained on Jason.
"On sight, Ghost Team reporting visual", a voice sounded out from the radio and the soldier fired a shot into Jason's head. Jason slumped over, as if dead and the soldier turned around, "What's the situation on that, over?"
"Tango down", the soldier answers his radio, "Terminated".
"Stand by, over", the radio states as Jason quietly gets to his feet behind the soldier.
The soldier turns back to Jason but he grabs him by his torso and throws him overhead and into the ground, breaking his neck. Then black tendrils come from Jason's body and absorbs the soldier into him. Jason painfully grunts in exertion as the soldier disappears into his own body. He then hears another soldier approaching the alley.
Not wanting to get shot again, Jason's body then changes into the soldier he absorbed, clothes and all, this ability is called Consume. He was also fully healed from Consuming, though he could also super heal from not taking damage.
The commander in lighter colored gear soon approaches Jason, "Report!", he stops before the transformed Jason, "Where the fuck is the target?!", Jason then grabs him by the neck, "Ah, put me down!", Jason then smashes him into the ground as he screams, being absorbed into Jason like his fellow soldier. This time however, Jason got memories from the consumed.
The man was Lt. Charles Perri. They had detained Dana Mercer, brother to Alex Mercer, along with where she's at.
Jason transform back to his true appearance, "Dana Mercer, her brother is behind this. He knew... I know where she is.".
He grabs the dropped rifle and begins to make his way to her location, "Dana... hopefully she'll be able to tell me something, anything", he stuck to rooftops and alleyways to avoid attention as much as possible. he shortly arrives on a rooftop to see a soldier blockade around the apartment complex she's at.
'Soldiers... I need a better view of the area', Jason thinks to himself before heading for another roof just across from the apartment, 'think about this.. they might know I'm coming here". He then transforms into the soldier he previously consumed, 'now I can get in undetected'.
Carefully making his way back to street level, Jason carefully but calmly walked into the apartment as though he was one of the soldiers, being saluted as he was a commander.
The building was practically empty as he transforms back to himself as he makes his way to Dana's room.
He arrives to see her being held from behind by one of the soldiers.
Dana has short, brown, spiked hair, while her eyes are silver blue. She wears a grey hoodie with a grey and black striped shirt underneath. She also wears a short denim skirt with a pair of black
tights and a pair of red sneakers.
"Get the fuckoff me", she yells to her captor.
"Dana!", Jason calls out, drawing the soldier's attention.
Dana takes the opportunity to head butt him with the back of her head, disorienting him and losing his grip on her. Jason rushes forward and punches straight through the man, causing Dana to scream in horror.
"I'm not going to hurt you", Jason tells her as she backs away in fear.
Jason gets her away from the area and sat her down in an sewer access tunnel, "I need your help. What do you know about your brother?".
Dana was sitting against a wall with her knees to her chest, "Jesus, i knew something fucked up as going at GENTEK. I've been researching that whole fucked up organization for weeks, I was poking around to get Alex information. He wanted to find out what was going on at the highest levels of GENTEK -- Anything about the Director of Research.", she explains. Jason gets a flash of memories, probably from the soldiers, about a DR. Raymond McMullen. "You okay?", she asked him.
"Do you know what happened? What's going on?", Jason asked her.
"I haven't seen him for five years till he just showed up at my door last month", she denies.
Jason processes before asking, "Is there somewhere we can go?".
"Yeah. I, um... I know a place", she replies as helicopter pass overhead.
Dana's Safehouse
"So, come in...", Dana says as she ushers Jason inside behind her, "It's, uh, it's a friend's place. They're gone for a year. Patagonia, or something".
Jason could see that she was been using this place as a base of operations due to already having a conspiracy wall of information
"Any idea what this all means?", Jason asks her.
"No, but I'm going to find out", Dana reassures, "I mean this is the story of the century, so somebody's got to know what the fuck is going on here", before looking to Jason, "You know...
they were waiting for me at my place, so... they're most definitely at my brothers", she probably doesn't know he died yet, but it could be another place to get some information.
"Where does he live?", Jason asks her.
"Uh, there", she answers, pointing to a marked location on the nearby map.
"you going to be here when I get back?", he asks her, "It's best you stay put for now -- they're probably combing the whole city for the both of us".
"Yeah", Dana replies, "I'll be here".
Jason soon leaves the building through the roof access.
'They'll be waiting for me. They think they're in control ', Jason thinks, 'but they have no idea what I'm capable of.'
Jason traversed the city on foot, since he doesn't have the League or Bat gear to use. Which was a pain despite having enhanced physical capabilities. Falling resulted in Jason learning that he was more durable, cracking the ground and causing it to shake, this lead to him staying on low buildings as to not draw attention, eventually cutting across Central Park to get to Alex Mercer's place
"So this is his home", Jason comments at the building he soon arrived at in the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
Alex Mercer's Apartment
Jason soon arrives to the apartment and easily enters, being cautious for enemy troops.
He looks around to see a wall of photos along with a certificate from the University of New York. There was a computer set-up in the far end, next to a white-board with formulas and equations written on it with and full book shelf next to it.
Looking to one of the photos, he sees Alex with a blonde woman. Taking the photo off the wall and taking the picture from te frame, he saw that Alex had written the names on the back. Karen Parker.
Suddenly, the apartment is blown up and Jason is sent flying out of the building and into the street below.
Jason gets up and sees a VIP being placed into a tank about a block north, "He's the one", he
remarks, targeting the man.
Troops were propelling down from copters to attack Jason, "Goddammit, that thing's still moving! Target...", but Jason quickly dealt with the more army dressed soldiers, unlike the tighter clothed versions from earlier. Again, they didn't seem to care about civilian casualties as much as Jason. One nearly called in a Strike Team from a "Red Crown" but Jason quickly dealt with him. He hid behind a wall where no one could see him and changed into one of his soldier forms as a disguise.
He then heard his radio, the soldier's radio, state, "All Sigma Units, converge on Central Park for immediate extraction.".
Jason then runs for the extraction point, near the center of Central Park, for the man who ordered the attack on him, remaining in his disguise as to not draw attention from the soldiers.
He then arrives to find him still in the tank, 'Got to get him out of there'. SInce he was still in a soldier get up, complete with a radio, he called in to give the all clear.
Soon after, the agent left the tank and began walking though a nearby underpass with a small escort to get to the chopper. jason was having none of that though and immediately went and grabbed him before consuming him.
"NOOOoOoo!", the man yells as he is consumed by Jason.
Jason then saw the memories of Cptn Mac Marshall about the virus and something happening in Idaho, another virus outbreak. This was stored into his new Web of Intrigue, where the memories of those Consumed are stored as to not effect Jason's own mind.
The first guy he consumed, 1st Lt James Goodwin, had thoughts about the militia he worked for, Blackwatch.
'I can see what he saw, know what he knew. His memories are my memories', Jason notes before he was brought back to reality due to the army and Blackwatch shooting at him.
Deciding to just evade them for now, Jason ran to another underpass, away from view, and changed his appearance once again.
He thought about what has been going on since he awakened, 'Gentek... Blackwatch... they have a hand as to what's going on'
Jason soon... evolved. His speed and jumping increased and he gained an Airdash ability and soon after, a glide ability. These would make traversing the city much easier. He also gained a
Critical Mass ability, which increases his physical attacks when he consumes beyond needed.
Finally, he had acquired a shield, due to his need to not get shot. it was a little painful when he first used it but got the hang of it quick. he could also use it in front of him as he ran to use like a battering ram. He can't wait to use it in combat.
Dana's Safehouse
Jason went back to Dana to discuss what he had found out. He quietly arrived and approaches her from behind as she worked at the computer she had.
"Find anything?", he asks her, freaking her out.
"Jesus Christ! Don't do that! Jeez... uh", Dana exhales as she calms down.
"Sorry", Jason apologizes, doing this is kind of a trademark of being trained by Batman.
"Ok. What about his apartment?", she asked him.
"There's nothing left. They blew it sky high when I got there", Jason informs.
"Well, it doesn't matter", Dana dismisses, "I got Alex's laptop".
"Laptop?", Jason asks, looking closer at the item in question over her shoulder, causing her to lean away.
"Yeah", she states, "It came in a package the day after he went AWOL. Look", she brings up classified information involving an Elizabeth Greene.
"I... I think I've seen her before", Jason mutters, but he can't remember where he saw her, maybe from one of the consumed.
"Well i dont know about that", Dana assures, "But there are two names in the file -- one is Alex's. The other is this woman: Elizabeth Greene... She's still in isolation at the GENTEk building. do you know who she is?"
Jason shrugs, "Hey, whoever she is, she knows more than I do."
Dana looks at the picture of Elizabeth, looking around 17, "my god, she's just a girl What kind of fucking monsters are these people?".
"Don't know. Probably power hungry assholes", Jason says.
Blackwatch HQ - Red Crown Command, Battery Park
General Randall and his Blackwatch Elite, The Specialist, Captain Robert Cross.
Randall was dressed in full camo military attire with a black turtleneck, he was missing a majority of his left arm
Cross was in a specially designed Blackwatch gear with his head exposed. He was equipped with a wrist mounded grenade launcher, ala Deadshot style.
Randall was giving orders over a flat screen to a col. Taggart.
"AXIOM will sweep to the river. BRIMSTONE will encircle the entire sector and detain anyone moving through the area. I want this contained by daybreak.", Randall orders.
"But sir, there are nearly 100,000 people in the blue zone.", Taggart informs Randall
"I'm not interested in excuses Get it done!", the general dismisses.
Randall then turns to Cross, "We have a situation I think your team is well suited for, Captain. How long until your men are in place?"
"We're prepped and waiting for orders", Cross informs him, "We can be wheels up and boots on the ground anywhere in the city in fifteen", he then takes a moment to be frank with the general, "With respect, sir, a suppression operation in a city of over a million is slightly more than my men can handle."
Randall replies, "The situation has already evolved, Captain. You're not participating in the containment action. Your team has a single target: codenamed Prototype.", showing pictures off the hooded Jason, "He's carrying a new strain. He's eliminated fifty of my men and smashed through a two-foot steel door. You interested?"
"I'm your man, sir", Cross agrees to the mission.
"I don't need to telly you what's at stake.", Randall says, 'And I don't want those damn costumed freaks involved either'.
Chapter End
AN: Some timeline things will be changed with [PROTOTYPE, about ten years. the first game took place in 2008 so these events will be in 2018, when Jason is 19 years old. so instead of Dana Mercer being born in 1988, she was born in 1998, a year before Jason.
The Blackwatch codename for Jason will be Prototype, might change to Hades later, I never really liked the Zeus codename, it never felt as though it was suited for the powersets. Felt like it belonged to Cole in inFAMOUS.
Resident Evil will also be have a change of timeline, with the first games taking place after this.
I might add some DCeased into this.
