"SQUAWK! SQUAWK!"

"*Sigh* not again. IT'S 6:30 IN THE MORNING! WILL YOU QUIT IT FOR ONCE!" I tried to hug my pillow to my ears but to no avail. I could still hear their squawking loud and clear even if I was miles away. That's how much it haunts me.

"SQUAWK! SQUAWK! SQUAWK!" They were laughing at my despair.

"I ALREADY TOLD YOU I'M SORRY A MILLION TIMES! WHY WON'T YOU LEAVE ME BE!"

"SQUAWK! SQUAWK! SQUAWK! SQUAWK!" They were angrier this time.

The reason the Squawkabillies are constantly cursing me with frustration and early wake up calls is because I made a completely honest mistake! I accidentally messed up one of the Squawkabilly's hair when trying to play with him, but then the whole family came and now bring revenge our first days here in Cabo Poco on my mom and I for the knock against their pride. Just for messing up one's hair! Never mess with a Squawkabilly's hair I guess.

I heard my mom yelling from downstairs. "THAT'S IT! I'M GETTING THE BROOM! I AM NOT LETTING THEM TERRORIZE US ON YOUR BIG DAY JAKE!" Yeah, my mom's a badass. She had to take care of me all on her own after my dad died when I was 4. We had lived in Kitakami, a little region not far from Paldea, when it happened. All I heard was screaming when I was out with two of my childhood friends playing. Then, my mom found me and immediately took me on a boat to Paldea. She never told me the details of what happened, and I never saw my childhood friends again. I never bothered asking because whenever she brings up Dad, she gains a sorrowful look on her face. I just change the subject immediately because my care for my mom outweighs my curiosity of what happened.

"HELL YEAH GET EM MOM!" I yelled from my bed. I might as well get up since I have to get ready for my big day. I get to finally go to Naranja Academy for college! I'm going to become an officially certified pokemon trainer! I'm a little late to the game since one can become a trainer at 16 here in Paldea while I'm 18, but I am truly grateful to get the chance. My mom could barely make ends meet going from job to job, so throughout my childhood and teenage years, I had to work as well instead of go to school since we could not afford it. We've moved around Paldea for all my mom's jobs, but we have finally landed in Cabo Poco where my mom works as the head butler (or butleress? IDK) of the Garcia estate right next door. They have graciously offered my mom the position due to all her expertise of jobs ranging from cleaning dishes to folding laundry in our lifetime of moving around. The job finally gives her enough financial leeway to allow me to follow my dream of going to Naranja to become a trainer!

I've always loved pokemon since I was born. When I was a toddler, I would always sneak out our house in Kitakami to play with all the pokemon in the backyard like wooper and yanma. As I grew up, pokemon was my escape from all the work and financial issues we had once we moved to Paldea. I made some human friends once in a while, but we never clicked since I would move away mostly in less than a year and would work 24/7. I would bond with all the pokemon in the area instead that lived close to where I worked or the house. It always hurt to see them go when we moved, but I seem to find pokemon friends everywhere I go. I realized I had a knack for pokemon since I would bond with them pretty well, and it showed on the entrance exam when I passed the threshold to gain a starter pokemon even with no prior schooling experience (subtle flex). My talent and love for pokemon are the reasons why I want to go on a journey with pokemon as a pokemon trainer and make lots of other pokemon friends along the way. Oh, also to become champion. Duh.

As my mom was kicking those Squawkabilly's asses (Go Mom!), I was getting ready for when Director Clavell came with all the starter pokemon choices I had: Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. They're all great options, so I honestly have no idea who to pick! They're all great in their own ways! I do love grass types like Sprigitito and it's soooo cute, but Fuecoco is...

I started going down a rabbit hole about the starter pokemon like I usually do when talking about pokemon when my mom yelled, "Honey come down quick! Director Clavell is here early!"

"OH SHIT!" I was still only clad in boxers not even close to ready for the day! I grabbed my uniform and quickly put it on as my mom greeted the director. I ran down stairs probably looking, and smelling, like a homeless person when I lost my step and fell down the stairs right in front of the Director. Uh oh...

"Are you alright young man?" the director asked worriedly.

"Oh! Yeah I'm just fine no worries. I'm a little clumsy sir haha!" This is so embarrassing.

"Oh that's ok. As long as you aren't hurt. And call me Mr. Clavell," he said calmly. He's really nice!

"OOF what's that smell?" Mr. Clavell asked. Oh shoot! It's definitely me he smells! I haven't taken a shower!

"Oh that's just the Squawkabilly poop on the roof, haha. Mr. Clavell, why don't you and me go in the other room for some questions I have about the academy. I'm sure Jake over here needs some more time to make sure he has everything." Good save Mom! She gave me the death glare as she said this basically saying I was dead for this, but I got outta there as soon as I could.

"Sounds great Ms. Kami, I'm happy to answer any questions you may have."

As they were talking downstairs, I took the quickest shower and got ready as fast as I could, combing my straight brown bangs, while packing up all my essentials: a toothbrush, deodorant, non-uniform clothes, chapstick (very essential), some money, and my rotom phone. I was absolutely zooming as I packed everything, and I went back downstairs after five minutes.

"Alright! Everything is packed and I'm ready to go!" I said excitedly.

"Sounds great Mr. Kami! I have your starter pokemon ready for you outside."

"Well let's not keep you waiting Jake. I know how excited you get when anything pokemon related is in the equation!"

We went outside, and Mr. Clavell released the pokemon. They all looked so cool and strong! I brought out my rotom phone with a built in pokedex to check out all three. Sprigatito seemed very uncaring of what's going on around her just like any house cat honestly. Fuecoco was eyeing a berry in a tree a ways away right as he got out of his ball and seemed to just go with the flow. He would get what he wants and fight tirelessly for it. Quaxly seemed cool and confident as he messed around with his pompodour to make sure it was perfect.

"*sigh*, I wish I had hair like Quaxly," Clavell whispered.

"What did you say?"

"Oh! Nothing at all! I'm not jealous of Quaxly haha!" Clavell laughed.

"Ummmm... ok. Anyways, I wonder who I'm going to pick!" As soon as I said this, I heard wings flapping in the distance.

"SQUAWK SQUAWK!" It was the Squawkabillies again!

"Oh no! Everyone watch out!" I yelled. I got in front of all the starters to protect them from the five Squawkabillies soaring towards us.

"This rivalry ends NOW!" I yelled. Fuecoco hid behind me frightened while Sprigatito barely reacted as she was just licking her paws. Quaxly surprisingly looked ready to fight. He seemed just as angry as I was!

"You wanna go at em Quaxly!"

"Quax!" He responded eagerly, ready to fight.

"Let's do this buddy! Use water gun!"

The five squawkabillies all dodged the water gun and rolled towards Quaxly.

"Quick! Pound the ground!"

Quaxly looked at me funny but did it anyway. He sent a fist to the ground as they approached, and dirt shot up all around Quaxly right into the Squawkabillies in front of him.

"Squawk! Squawk!" They screamed in fright. The dirt got all over their hair! They started freaking out and flew off far away from our house so no one could see their pride and joy all dirty.

"Yeah fly away stupid birds! Oh yeah, and Quaxly's hair is much better than yours!" I taunted.

"Quax! Quax-Ly!" Quaxly agreed and hit what seemed to be his signature victory pose of slicking his hair back.

"Great job Quaxly! We make a great team don't we!"

"Quax!" He agreed while making sure he looked as cool as possible.

"Well done Jake! That was some quick thinking there with that hair trick!" my mom acknowledged.

"Yes indeed. You have lots of talent," Mr. Clavell agreed. "You and Quaxly make a great duo. Do you think you will choose Quaxly as your starter?"

"As long as Quaxly agrees, I would love to!" I remarked.

Everyone stared at Quaxly expectantly as he held a dramatic pause for suspense. He definitely felt like the main character of a superhero movie after saving the day.

"Quax!" He jumped and bumped me in the head in agreement.

"That's great Quaxly!" I replied. "We'll become champions in no time!"

"Congratulations honey! You're growing up so fast." She welled up a little bit.

"Ahhh, Mom. You know I'll come to visit plenty! Naranja Academy is really close to Cabo Poco. I promise to come back and show you my new and improved team!"

"You better! It's gonna be pretty boring without my favorite son!"

"Mom, I'm your only son." I rolled my eyes as I gave her one last hug. I was gonna miss her.

We exited our embrace as Mr. Clavell spoke up breaking the moment.

"Mr. Kami, are you ready to go now? I have somewhere I need to stop that I'm sure you'll be excited about."

"Oooh, intriguing. Yeah, I'm ready. Bye Mom love you!"

"Bye Jake, be good and make sure to be ready on time when you have somewhere to be!" She gave me a death glare, so I know she meant it after the little fiasco we had this morning.

"No worries, I promise." And with that I left my true home, my mother, and left for a new beginning.

"I know Mom will be real proud of me once we become champion right Quaxly?"

"Quax" He shrugged his shoulders and agreed nonchalantly.

I guess we'll see where this goes. A new adventure awaits!
