Making Changes 1: Graduation

It took a little over four years, but the big day was finally here; Minato Amamiya's College Graduation! The eldest Amamiya child graduated high school with no idea what he wanted to do in life, but after trying a vast assortment of jobs, he eventually decided to become a doctor after spending a day working with Dr. Tae Takemi. Minato ended up become Takemi's star pupil, working with her whenever he had time off from school and selling her Love Potion to the student body of Nagoya University, the college that he attends. Minato was an even better student at Nagoya University. Not only was he a part of the school's research team, but also graduating with the honor of Summa Cum Laude. To say that Ren, Ann, Kimiko, and Morgana, and by extension the rest of their respective friend group, were proud of Minato would be the understatement of the millennium.

Now it's finally time for Minato to graduate and the Amamiyas, the Sakamotos, the Kitagawas, the Mishimas, the Yajimas, the Tanakas, the Watanabes, and even other folks that grew familiar with Minato over the years like Sojiro Sakura, Akihiro Hagiwara and his wife and infant son, Wataru Koyama, Sae, Ryuta, Yutaka, Sadayo Kawakami, Yamato Hashimoto, and Dr. Takemi herself, were heading up to Nagoya so they could watch Minato graduate.

This tale begins at the Amamiya Residence where Ren, Ann, Kimiko, and Morgana were getting ready to go to Nagoya so they could attend Minato's graduation ceremony. While Kimiko was in the shower, Ren and Ann were in their bedroom getting ready. Ann was in front of the vanity applying make-up while Ren was sitting on the bed behind her, looking through a trunk. Ann saw her husband fussing around with the trunks contents and she turned around to face him. In Ren's hand, he was holding something small and made of cloth. It was a badge that depicted the Phantom Thieves logo.

"Ren, come on, we've got to get ready," Ann said, "I don't want to miss a second of our baby boy's graduation."

"Huh?" went Ren, "Oh, sorry, Ann. I was just looking at this old memento from our days as the Phantom Thieves."

Ann sat right next to her husband so she could gaze upon the badge as well.

"Oh yeah," Ann said, "That's our logo from back in the day."

"I bought it a few days after the Metaverse got closed up for good," Ren said, "I found the store where Akane acquired all of that Phantom Thief memorabilia in her room, and that's where I bought this."

"We've come a long way since those days haven't we?" Ann asked.

"We sure have," Ren nodded in agreement, "I never would've dreamed back then that I'd be married with two beautiful children, one of them graduating from college today."

"That's life for you, babe," Ann smiled, "One minute you think you're going to get one thing, and the next, surprise, you're getting a different, but nonetheless much better, thing."

"Took the words out of my mouth, love," Ren said as he gave his wife a peck on the lips before putting the badge back in the trunk, making sure to hide it beneath the trunk's other contents. He then closed the trunk and put it back under the bed. The trunk in question has something engraved on it; Ren's Special Box, "I'd better finish getting ready."

"And I'd better finish applying the finishing touches on my face," Ann said as she went back to her vanity to apply mascara.

"Not that I'm judging you, babe, but are you sure it's a good idea to put on mascara for something like that?" Ren asked.

"What do you mean?" Ann asked.

"I'm just saying in moments like this, you have a tendency to turn on the waterworks," Ren said, "Remember Kimiko's high school graduation last year?"

"Oh, babe, don't remind me," Ann said, emotions coming back to her, "I'm going to start crying all over again."

"Hey, it'll be okay," Ren said in a comforting tone as he hugged his wife, who hugged him back.

"Oh, Ren, it all happened too fast," Ann lamented, "What happened to those two little bundles of joy that I used to be able to cradle in my arms?"

"Yeah, I understand," Ren said in a sympathetic tone, "We just have to remember that no matter how old Minato or Kimiko get, they'll always be our kids, and we'll love them like any parent would love their kids."

"Yeah, I guess," Ann said as she stopped hugging her husband so she could kiss him on the lips before returning to her vanity to apply make-up while Ren finished getting himself ready by picking out a tie, "At least Minato will be back home by the end of the day and he can get to work on finding a job that'll use his medical degree. And Kimiko's gap year is almost up, and she should be applying for colleges around here pretty soon. The Amamiya Family will be together again."

"We sure will, Ann," Ren smiled, excited for his son's return.

Little did Ann and Ren know, their daughter Kimiko was considering going to school in Kyoto while Minato had other plans in mind…but that'll be saved for later. The couple finished getting ready, and once they, along with Kimiko and Morgana, were dressed in their Sunday best, they hurried off for the bullet train to Nagoya so they could attend Minato's graduation ceremony.

Upon arriving at the auditorium at Nagoya University, the Amamiya clan showed their tickets to the doorman who let them inside so they could partake in the ceremony. Upon entering the auditorium, they looked and saw the Sakamotos, the Mishimas, the Yajimas, both branches of the Watanabe Family (Daisuke's family and Ryuta's soon-to-be family), the Kitagawas, the Tanakas, Dr. Takemi, Wataru Koyama, Akihiro and his family, and Sojiro Sakura. They all beat them there and had reserved seats for the four Amamiyas. The only ones missing were Sadayo Kawakami, Yamato Hashimoto, and perhaps the strangest of all, Nariko Watanabe, Shiho and Daisuke's daughter, is absent.

"Look, there's everyone," Kimiko said as she pointed at the crowd of her friends and their families.

"Guys, over here!" Ann called, causing their friend group to look in their direction.

"Well look who finally decided to show up," Ryuji teased as the four Amamiyas came to give their greetings and take their seats.

"Sorry we're a little late," Ren said.

"Hey, what matters is you're here," Yuuki said.

"Hey there, half-sister of mine," Akihiro said to Kimiko.

"Hi, Akihiro," Kimiko waved, "Hey, Rika. And hello to you, Masaru, my cute little bean."

Kimiko's cute greeting towards the baby made Masaru giggle.

"We're so glad that our baby took such a shine to you, Kimiko," Rika smiled, "Both Akihiro and I agree that you'll make a great mother some day."

"I hope so," Kimiko smiled before looking over at Mana and Mitsu, who were nearby, "So, Mana, Mitsu, how do you feel knowing that Minato is about to graduate?"

"It feels awesome, Kimiko," Mitsu said, "Just seeing our boyfriend become a man by accepting his degree and paving the way for a bright future for him and us."

"We also heard he'll be doing a speech," Mana chimed in, "Can't wait to hear that."

"But more than anything, we're just glad that he'll be coming home to us at the end of all of this," Mitsu added.

"The long distance thing was fun and romantic," Mana chimed in, "But it's nothing like having the real thing in front of you. On that note, we heard you're thinking about going to Kyoto to study."

"Thinking about it, yeah," Kimiko said, "Not only are the acting schools there top notch from what I've heard, but I get to be closer to Kaito, who is also attending school there."

"Did he ask you if you wanted to move in with him?" Mitsu asked.

"Now that you mention it, last year during prom Kaito tried multiple times to tell me something that was on his mind," Kimiko said, remembering her prom night, "You think that's what he wanted to tell me?"

"We can't be certain, but there's a high chance," Mitsu said, causing Kimiko to give off a cute little smile; the thought of moving in with her boyfriend and starting a life with him exciting every fiber of her being. Kimiko stopped smiling however when she realized that Nariko Watanabe was missing. She looks to see Kaito not far from her and she gives her boyfriend a hug and a kiss.

"Hey, babe," Kimiko said.

"Hey, Kim," Kaito greeted back, "All set for Minato's big day?"

"Am I ever," Kimiko smiled before getting back on more serious matters, "I just want to know where Nariko is. She was the first friend Minato made after all, and I didn't think that she of all people would miss this event."

"It's the strangest thing," Kaito said, "She woke up feeling very nauseous this morning and she decided to stay close to home in case she really is sick."

"Aw, man, poor Nariko," Kimiko frowned, "You think she'll be okay for Minato's graduation reception later?"

"It's hard to say, really," Kaito said, unsure of what's ailing his sister.

With Ren and Ann, they're talking with some of the other adults of their friend group.

"How are you holding up, Ann?" Makoto asked.

"I'm doing my best," Ann answered, "But I have a whole wad of tissues in my purse just in case I can't hold my emotions back."

"Trust me, you won't be able to hold back your emotions," Hifumi said, "When Hotaru graduated recently, both Hayato and I were weeping messes when we saw him walk on stage to accept his diploma."

"Just thinking about it makes me want to cry some more," Hayato sniffled.

"All of our kids are growing up, guys," Ichiro said, "They're not babies anymore. They're becoming full fledged members of society, and soon they'll be looking at careers, maybe even marriage and kids of their own."

"Are you trying to make all of us cry, Ichiro?" Shiho asked.

"Yeah, come on, dude, this is supposed to be a happy time," Wataru said, "Save the tears for later!"

"Wataru's right," Haru said, "We have to keep our heads. Minato wouldn't want to make his speech over the sound of all of our blubbering."

"We should think of happier thoughts," Daisuke said before looking over at Ryuta and Sae, "Such as you guys' marriage! How's that coming along?"

"We already rented a venue and booked the Wilton Hotel Ballroom for the reception," Sae answered.

"The Wilton Ballroom?" Yusuke asked, "We'll be seeing a lot of that place this month. We're heading there after this for Minato's graduation reception, right?"

"Yup," Ren and Ann both said.

"That's great and all, but what about the bachelor party?" Ryuji asked, "Where are we having it? What kind of food will be served? Will there be girls?"

"Settle down, Ryuji," Makoto said as she rubbed her husband's back.

"Ryuji, I promise you, I'm working everything out in that regard," Ryuta said, "But I guarantee that the night of my bachelor party will be a night that you gents won't soon forget. And, since the likes of Minato, Hotaru, Riku, and Kaito are in their 20s, I don't see why we can't bring them along."

"My son's first bachelor party," Daisuke said in amazement, "This'll be interesting."

"Just make sure you keep a close eye on him, Daisuke," Shiho said, "A lot of crazy things can happen at a bachelor party, and I want both you and our son to come home in one piece."

"You can count on me, babe," Daisuke smiled.

As the adults continued talking, from the corner of their eyes they saw Sadayo Kawakami, Yamato Hashimoto, and a girl around Yutaka's age (10 years old) come up to them.

"Hey, everyone," Sadayo said with a smile and a wave, "Here we are!"

"Ms. Kawakami," Yuuki said happily, "Nice, glad you could make it."

"Excuse you, Yuuki," Sadayo said, "But it's Mrs. Hashimoto now."

"Wait, Mrs. Hashimoto?" Ren asked, "You mean, you two got married?!"

"Mmm-hmm," Yamato said with a smile and a nod, "I proposed to her after Kimiko's senior prom wrapped up. I've never seen a smile as big as Sadayo's when I popped the question."

"Congratulations you two!" Haru smiled before finally noticing the little girl that was with them. The little girl had curly, hip length black hair, amber eye color, and gray-framed, oval shaped glasses, "Who's this?"

"Oh, well, Sadayo told me that one of her dreams in life was to become a mother," Yamato explained.

"But since my 'biological clock' went off a while ago, conceiving a child with Yamato will prove to be fruitless," Sadayo chimed in, "Fun, but fruitless."

"That's when we decided to adopt a kid of our own," Yamato said, "Everyone, say hello to our adoptive daughter, Nayoko."

"Hello, everyone," Nayoko said in a polite tone of voice, "It's very nice to meet you all."

"My, what nice manners," Makoto said, impressed.

"Her manners are what drew us to her to begin with," Sadayo said, "Nayoko really is a good girl."

"Are these some of the people you taught in the past, Mama Sadayo?" Nayoko asked.

"Some of them, anyway," Sadayo said, "And I even taught their kids when they went to Shujin Academy. And someday, when you become old enough, I'll be teaching you too."

"Excellent," Nayoko smiled.

"Looks like you and our adoptive son Yutaka will be going to school together then," Ryuta said.

"Your son?" Nayoko asked.

"Yeah," Ryuta nodded, "Yutaka seems to be about your age. Would you like to meet him? It's always nice to have friends in your corner ready to back you up."

"Okay!" Nayoko said with a smile.

"Yutaka, come over here," Sae called over to hers and Ryuta's adoptive son, who came over.

"Yes, Ha-Ha," Yutaka asked.

"We have someone we'd like you to meet," Ryuta said, "Someone who you might end up going to school with, and we thought that you two should become acquainted. Say hi to Nayoko Hashimoto, son."

"Nayoko, huh?" Yutaka asked as he started looking around for the girl in question, "That's a pretty cool name. So where is she-"

Yutaka stopped talking when he saw Nayoko, and their respective gazes met. They looked at each other in blissful awe; it was love at first sight. They walked up to each other to say hello, a small blush on both of their faces.

"H-Hi," Yutaka stammered, "I'm Yutaka."

"N-Nayoko," Nayoko answered, "I like your haircut."

"Those glasses look good on you," Yutaka complimented, "So, you're adopted too?"

"Y-Yeah," Nayoko said bashfully.

"Maybe I can tell you the story about how I met my parents sometime," Yutaka smiled.

"I'd like that," Nayoko smiled.

The grown ups were watching how the two kids were acting around each other and immediately knew they were falling for each other.

"Well would you look at that," Yamato said, looking at Sae and Ryuta, "Looks like your boy has a thing for our girl and vice versa. Can you imagine if they started dating when they grow-up?"

"Yeah," Ryuta chuckled.

Suddenly, they saw the dean walk on stage, and they knew the ceremony was about to begin.

"Attention, everyone," the dean went, "If you'd all be so kind as to take your seats. The ceremony is about to begin."

The crowd did as they were told and they plopped themselves down in their seats. Once everyone was seated, the graduated students entered the auditorium wearing their cap and gowns; green for the boys and white for the girls. As everyone applauded when the students showed up, the main gang looked to see Minato pass them by.

"Minato, hey!" Kimiko whispered as she waved to her brother, who happily waved back at her, their friends, and their family.

"Man, it seemed like only yesterday Makie and I were babysitting him when he was just a baby," Ryuji said, "Now look at him."

"Where does the time really go?" Makoto asked, sympathizing with her husband.

Once all of the graduates sat themselves down, the dean continued to talk.

"Welcome one and all to the graduation ceremony for Nagoya University's Class of 20-" the dean said before the microphone started to give him feedback, cutting him off, "Sorry, sorry, old microphone. Anyway, here to make a rousing graduation speech is this year's class valedictorian, graduating Summa Cum Laude with his Bachelor of Medicine, please give a round of applause for Minato Amamiya!"

As Minato stood up to walk up on stage, everyone, especially Ren, Ann, Kimiko, and Morgana started clapping. Minato got up on stage and looked into the audience, a big smile on his face. A big smile which only grew when he saw all of his friends and family in the audience. With a deep breath, Minato started talking.

"Thank you all for coming," Minato began, "Over the course of these last few years we have grown a lot. We started as folks fresh out of high school, not sure what will come next in life, to a group of proud individuals graduating from college who know exactly what they want from life and are going to do everything in their power to get it. I personally remember how I was when I graduated high school; lost, unsure, and with the sole intention of skating by in life. But, thanks to my friends and especially my family, I was able to pick myself back up and realize my dreams and what I want to do in life. While I, as well as all of my fellow classmates, still have a long way to go before we become the best version of ourselves, I know that if we keep believing in ourselves, helping each other when necessary, and have the love and support of the people who care about us the most, the sky's the limit! Once again, I want to thank you all for coming, and to all of my classmates graduating with me this year, don't stop fighting for your dreams and what you believe in. If there are naysayers in your lives looking to put you down, turn their 'You can't' into an 'I can'. Prove them all wrong and strive to accomplish the impossible so that way when you finally get everything you want from life it'll be that much sweeter. Thank you, everyone."

When Minato finished his speech, he gave a bow as the audience gave a thunderous applause.

"YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!" Kimiko cheered.

"That's my boy!" Ren shouted proudly.

"Minato! I love you, sweetheart!" Ann cheered as she wiped a tear from her eyes.

"Way to go, Minato!" Morgana cheered.

The Amamiyas watched as the dean came up to Minato with his degree. The authoritarian figure handed the eldest Amamiya child the degree and he faced the audience so they could take pictures. As Ren and Ann applauded their child and took pictures of him with their phones, for a brief moment they saw something that warmed their hearts; for a split second they saw a five-year-old Minato wearing the cap and gown and holding the degree instead of the modern day 23-year-old one. No matter how old and mature he gets, Ren and Ann will always see their son as the cute little boy that they raised. Nevertheless, the two parents continued to applaud their son as he held up his degree in pride, knowing that this current chapter of his life had ended and he's more than ready to start the next one.

After the ceremony, everybody took the bullet train back to Tokyo so they could take part in Minato's graduation ceremony that night in the Wilton Hotel Ballroom, and what a turn out it was!. Everyone Minato had ever met or heard of was there! On top of the people that attended his graduation ceremony, there was Ichiko Ohya, Lala Escargot, Munehisa and Kaoru Iwai, Naoya Makigami and his reformed older brother Kazuya Makigami, most of the staff from Shujin Academy, Shinya Oda, Zenkichi and Akane Hasegawa, all of Daisuke and Watanabe's family, Eiko Takao, Ann's rival Mika and the Vague Magazine photographer Kenzo, Ryuji's mother Nanami and her boyfriend Koji, Hayato's mother Reina, Hotaru's film making buddies (Saburo from 'Now What?' being one of them) and so many more.

Fortunately for everyone there, there was plenty of food and beverages to go around, with Sojiro's famous curry being one of the things served. The ballroom was decorated in silver and gold balloons and streamers with a banner that read, 'Congratulations, Minato!' hung up on the ceiling.

Minato himself was seen dancing with Mana and Mitsu in the middle of the dancefloor.

"We missed you so much, Minato," Mana said.

"I missed you girls too," Minato smiled.

"But now you're graduated, and we can cherish you and love you to the fullest," Mitsu said.

"Actually, girls," Minato began, "There's something I've been meaning to tell you, and I'm not sure if you're going to be all that thrilled to hear it."

"What is it, Minny?" Mitsu asked.

"I'm sure it can't be that bad," Mana said.

Minato was about to elaborate more on what he had to tell the Kitagawa Twins when Sojiro started calling over to him.

"Hey, Minato, come over here," Sojiro was heard saying as he stood next to Ren and Ann.

"Oh, hold that thought, girls," Minato said as he ran over to his parents and Sojiro, "What's up, guys?"

"Nothing much, Minato," Sojiro said, "I just want to give my congratulations for graduating college. I was there for when your parents and their friends graduated high school and college, but I never thought I'd be around long enough to see you and your friends graduate college and start lives of your own. I feel honored and blessed knowing that I lived long enough to witness such a momentous occasion."

"I'm glad you could be here, Uncle Sojiro," Minato said as he shook Sojiro's hand, "I've known you since, wow, since I was in diapers. And now here we are."

"You've grown up into a proud young man, Minato," Sojiro said, "Your parents should be proud."

"Believe us, Sojiro, we are," Ren smiled.

"And since you're all grown up now, Minato, there's something I want to give you that all grown-up men should have," Sojiro said as he reached behind himself and grabbed his white trilby hat with the red-white-and-blue hat band, giving it to Minato.

"You're giving me your hat?" Minato said, touched.

"Of course," Sojiro smiled, "A true sign that you're a grown-up now, Minato. And don't worry, I have plenty more at home. I know you'll take good care of that one though."

"Oh believe me, I will," Minato said excitedly as he put the hat on his head, "Well mom and dad, how do I look?"

"Very dapper," Ren said as Ann said, "Very handsome."

"Awesome!" Minato smiled, "I've gotta show my friends this. This is so cool! Thank you, Uncle Sojiro!"

Ren, Ann, and Sojiro watched as Minato ran into the party to show off his new hat.

"May he make us all proud," Sojiro said warmly before turning to Ren and Ann, "Which reminds me, did Minato tell either of you what his plans are now that he's graduated?"

"He hasn't really said anything," Ann said, "But we'll probably help him find a job that uses his degree sometime later this week."

"Has he said anything to you, Sojiro?" Ren asked.

"Nope," Sojiro shook his head.

Meanwhile, in the corner of the room, we see Riku playing a song on a piano while Wataru sang to a group of party goers, among them were Yusuke, Futaba, Yuuki, Mai, Shiho, Daisuke, and Kaito. The song was just wrapping up as Riku was playing the final notes while Wataru sang the final verse.

"Someone to watch…over me," Wataru sang, ending the song so the group he and Riku were performing for could give a round of applause.

"Thank you, thank you," Wataru said as he gave bow, "I couldn't have done it without my wonderful piano player Riku Mishima. Say, son, why don't you do something more with those piano playing skills of yours."

"I've thought about it," Riku said, "But playing and making video games is more my speed."

"It's true," Yuuki said, "Riku just got upgraded to full-time at Sunny Interactive Studios and is raking in a lot of money."

"Enough to move out of my parents place and into a place of my own," Riku said, "And maybe I'll bring Nariko with me. Speaking of which, where is Nariko?"

"Her stomach is still bothering her," Shiho said.

"Aw man, poor Nariko," Riku frowned, "Maybe I should step out for a bit and go see how she's doing."

"Before we left Nariko said that we shouldn't worry about her, and that we shouldn't make you worry," Kaito said, "She didn't want her current state to dampen anyone's spirits."

"That Nariko," Daisuke said, "Always looking to make sure to put everyone else's happiness first."

"Even still, if she's still feeling horrible tomorrow I should make a point to go pay her a visit," Riku said.

"Good idea son," Yuuki said before turning to his wife, who had a small look of sadness on her face, "Hey, Futaba, what's wrong?"

"Huh?" Futaba said, looking up at her husband, "Uh, nothing's wrong, babe. Everything is fine."

"Are you sure?" Mai asked, "You look a little sad. Want us to get you something to eat? Those cookies that Auntie Haru bought are quite scrumptious."

"No, Mai, I'm fine. Thank you," Futaba said, her sour mood deeply worrying those around her, especially her husband and children.

"I think I'm going to go find, Kas," Mai said, "I haven't seen her that much since we got here."

As Mai went to go look for her girlfriend, she saw Kas' parents, Sumire and Ichiro, talking with Naoya and Kazuya Makigami, and Eiko Takao.

"You're really still competing in gymnastics tournaments, Ichiro?" Eiko asked.

"Yeah, why not?" Ichiro asked.

"It's just that you're reaching your mid-40s," Naoya said, "Most athletes usually retire long before that."

"I have my reasons for why I'm still going strong," Ichiro said, "I say that as long as there are still competitions to participate in, why stop now?"

"This dude's unstoppable," Kazuya said in awe.

"Sumire, how does it feel to be married to someone as determined and passionate about gymnastics as him," Naoya asked.

"Pretty darn good all things considered," Sumire said before turning to her husband, "Just promise me you'll be safe when you compete. I know you're in excellent shape, but this really can't last forever, babe."

"Sumi, you worry about me too much," Ichiro said, "I'll be just fine, and it'll take an act of God to stop me from competing in gymnastics competitions."

"Hey, Uncle Ichiro, Auntie Sumire," Mai said as she walked up to the two gymnasts, "Have either of you seen Kas anywhere? I haven't been able to find her."

"I think she's outside getting some fresh air," Sumire said as Mai started to make her way outside.

Outside the Wilton Hotel, we see Kas talking to herself. Not because she's crazy mind you, but because she's trying to figure out the words to use when proposing to Mai! The young red haired woman was looking down at the wedding ring that she bought her, a gold band ring with a diamond on it, in hopes that it would give her the inspiration she needed.

"Come on, Kasumi, you can do it!" Kas said to herself as she tried to think of a good speech, "Mai, you are one awesome chick…no, no, too casual…um…My darling, Mai, you're more beautiful than a sunset on a clear cloudless evening…no, that's too sappy…uh…Mai, do you want to be my wife…no, too simple! Ugh, why do movies make wedding proposals look so easy?"

Suddenly, Kas heard the hotel door open up and she quickly hid her ring in her pocket before turning around to see who it was. She was relieved to see that it was only Minato, who only came out to show his friend the hat Sojiro gave him.

"Oh, Minato, it's only you," Kas said with a sigh of relief, "Nice hat by the way."

"Sojiro gave it to me," Minato said, "I heard you were out here and I wanted to show it to you. Why are you out here anyway?"

"I'll tell you if you promise to keep it a secret," Kas said, "Especially from Mai."

"My lips are sealed, Kas," Minato said.

"Alright," Kas said as she took the wedding ring out of her pocket and showed it to her friend.

"What a lovely ring!" Minato said in awe.

"Thanks," Kas said, "I've been saving up for a while to pay for it. I even went so far as to sell a few of my things to make some of the money. Anyway, I was hoping to propose to Mai sometime soon now that we're all graduating from college and moving forward with our lives. The only problem I have is trying to figure out the words to say when proposing to her. Why can't wedding proposals just be like, 'Yo, babe, you wanna get hitched or what'?"

"If only life were that simple, Kas," Minato said.

"Got any advice," Kas asked her friend.

"You can't just have someone make a wedding proposal for you, Kas," Minato said, "A wedding proposal has to be personal, a vocal representation of pouring out one's heart and soul to another. Believe me, Kas, I'd love to help you, but this is something you have to figure out on your own."

"Well thanks for nothing, Mr. Graduate," Kas pouted as Mai came outside. When Mai appeared, Kas quickly put the wedding ring back in her pocket before she could notice.

"Kas, there you are!" Mai smiled, "I've been looking everywhere for you."

"Hey babe," Kas smiled as she and Mai hugged and gave each other a kiss.

"What are you doing out here?" Mai asked.

"Just needed to get a little fresh air," Kas said, "But I think I'm ready to go back inside."

"Great," Mai smiled, "Because I want to have at least one dance with you tonight."

"You got it!" Kas said as she and Mai ran back to the ballroom, with Minato walking in behind them.

As Minato, Kas, and Mai rejoin the party in the ballroom, we see some of the other conversations the other party goers are having. For starters, we see Shiho talking with Sadayo, Yamato, Sae, and Ryuta.

"So, another season of volleyball is on the rice, Mrs. Head Coach," Ryuta said, "Are you excited."

"A little bit," Shiho said, "I just need to find a new player to replace Akiyama. Last season was her last one before she retired. I've been holding tryouts all week to find her replacement, but no one has really wowed me so far."

"Keep your head up, Shiho," Yamato said, "I'm sure the perfect replacement will come when you least expect it."

"Thanks for believing in me, Yamato," Shiho said with a smile.

"You know, I've got to say, Shiho," Sadayo said, "I remember all those years ago when you…you know."

"It's okay, Sadayo," Shiho said, "It happened, there's nothing we can do to change it, and ignoring it won't make what happened go away."

"Okay," Sadayo said, "But, after you jumped off the school roof, I wasn't sure if you'd ever make a full recovery or live a successful life. I, as well as many others, feared for the worst. But, here you are now; Married with children and head coach of the Woman's Volleyball Team after your own successful career in the sport. You must be proud with all you've accomplished."

"I really am, Sadayo," Shiho nodded, "Thank you."

The group of five then looked in the distance to see Yutaka and Nayoko playing with each other by chasing a balloon around the ballroom.

"Your kids look like they hit it off well," Shiho said as she watched the two 10 year olds play.

"Yeah," Ryuta nodded.

"I knew they'd be good friends," Yamato said.

"Maybe if they stick together long enough they could become more than friends," Sae teased, causing Ryuta to join in.

"One thing at a time," Sadayo said, "Baby steps."

In another part of the ballroom, we see the likes of Yusuke, Haru, Himari, Hotaru, Makoto, Ryuji, Hayato, Hifumi, Nanami, Koji, and Reina conversing.

"So, what's been going on with you guys lately?" Koji asked.

"Well, for starters, as of about a week ago, I'm officially retired from the police force and I'm able to start collecting pension," Makoto said.

"Oh, word?" Hotaru asked.

"Yeah," Makoto answered, "I joined the police force after graduating college when I was in my 20s, now I'm in my 40s and the rule is I must complete at least 20 full years of service before I can start reaping the benefits."

"So, since it's a pension plan, you basically get paid monthly by the government as a reward for your hard work as police sergeant," Hayato asked.

"Pretty much, yeah," Makoto said.

"Wow, retired," Haru said, "So, now that you have a lot more free time on your hands, what do you plan on doing with it?"

"Well, spending time with my family and friends is a must," Makoto said, "But then…I don't know."

"Well you must have some idea of what you want to do with your life now that your job at the Shibuya Precinct is done," Nanami said, "As wonderful as it is to hang out with your friends and family, there's more to life than just that."

"I'm sure something will come up," Makoto said, an unsure look on her face, "So what about you guys? Anything interesting going on in all of your lives?"

"Yusuke is getting another one of his paintings hung up at the Mori Art Museum," Haru announced.

"For real?" Ryuji asked.

"That's great!" Hifumi smiled.

"That's such great news, Yusuke," Hayato congratulated his friend.

"Yeah, excellent work," Hotaru said.

"Thank you, everyone," Yusuke said gratefully, "I couldn't have done it without the support of you guys, and especially you Haru."

Yusuke gave Haru a kiss on her cheek, causing her to giggle cutely.

"Speaking of art, Hotaru is ready to present his newest short film at the Shibuya Film Festival tomorrow," Himari announced.

"Yup," Hotaru said, proudly, "lt took a dozen cups of coffee and an all-nighter here or there, but I managed to create the perfect short film."

"Babe, you say every short film you make is perfect," Himari teased.

"Well this time I mean it," Hotaru said.

"What's it about?" Reina asked.

"It's a dramatic tale about a brother and sister who survive after the apocalypse," Hotaru said, "Armed with nothing but a few guns, limited food and water, and the clothes on their backs, they travel across a ruined world in search of something resembling a sanctuary."

"That does sound like a dramatic tale," Yusuke said, "I'll admit I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic stories. There's something hauntingly beautiful about them."

"Then I think you'll really like this one, Uncle Yusuke," Hotaru said.

"You'd better believe we'll be there to check it out," Makoto said.

"Thank you, Auntie Makoto," Hotaru smiled, "I will be the first to admit that I am a little nervous."

"What do you have to be nervous about, babe," Himari asked, "This isn't your first rodeo."

"That may be, but this is the first time I'm attending a film festival and a CEO for a major film company is going to be there," Hotaru said.

"Really?" Nanami asked, "Who?"

"Rumor has it that International Studios (Universal Studios) CEO Hideki Yamagata will be at the film festival in search of new, up-and-coming directors to take on board," Hotaru explained, "I would love nothing more than for Mr. Yamagata chose me, but there are so many other competitors who pour all of their heart and soul into their films that the likelihood of him picking me is so small, I have a better chance of going outside during a thunderstorm and dodging rain."

"Don't talk like that," Hifumi said to her son,

"You're counting yourself out before the contest even starts," Hayato chimed in, "That's never a good attitude to have."

"And besides, if you win first place then that big wig CEO will have to take you on board," Ryuji said.

"Not necessarily," Hotaru said, "There were a few times when a CEO showed up to a film festival and he took on the second place, and sometimes even third place winner. It's not about who has the best credentials, it's about who has the most passion in their work."

"Babe, I want you to listen to me," Himari said, "You are a very talented filmmaker. You are going to go places with that talent, and if this CEO doesn't take you on, then it's his loss because he missed out on one hell of a future director."

Hotaru smiled and gave his girlfriend a hug.

"Thanks, babe," Hotaru said, "I really needed to hear that."

"You know me, Hotaru," Himari said, "I'm always here for a pep talk whenever you need it."

(End BGM)

The adults watched Hotaru and Himari hug each other until they suddenly heard the sound of microphone feedback. Everyone looked at the center of the ballroom to find Minato ready to make a speech, microphone in one hand and a drink in the other.

"Hello, may I have everyone's attention, please," Minato began as everyone looked over at him, "I would like to propose a toast to all of you; my friends, my family, my lovers, and anyone else in between all of that. I just want to say how lucky I am to have people like you in my life, always willing to support me and my dreams no matter how crazy or outlandish they sound. This day will be one that I will cherish for the rest of my days, mostly because you were all there to experience it with me. I don't know what awaits me on the road ahead, but I for one can't wait to see just what life has to throw at me."

Everyone began to applaud and Minato took the time to let everyone finish singing their praises of him before he continued talking. As the applause kept going, Ann got herself a glass of wine while Kimiko took a big long sip from a glass of lemonade. When the cheers started to die down, that was when Minato continued talking.

"Now then, with all of that out of the way, I'd also like to use this opportunity to announce my next move in life," Minato said as everyone awaited his plan with open ears, "Over the years, I've learned to grab life by the horns and say yes to new experiences and life-changing opportunities, with this next move being one such potential new experiences. And so, I'm proud to announce that in one month…Dr. Takemi and I will be going to Africa for five years as part of her 'Doctors Without Borders Program'!"

What followed was a mixed reception from the crowd. Some of them applauded and cheered, but most of the other party goers, especially those who were close to Minato were in shock.

"WHAT?!" Mana and Mitsu yelled as Ann dropped her wine glass on the floor, causing it to break, and Kimiko did a spit take with her lemonade.

"You're leaving us, again?!" Ryuji exclaimed, "But you just got back!"

"Dude, you can't leave!" Kas exclaimed.

"I know this news is sudden, everyone," Minato said with some remorse in his voice, "And I understand if some of you are against this decision, but it's one I have to make for the sake of advancing my life. But I assure you that I'll be just fine, and I'll try and keep in touch as much as I can over the course of the next five years."

"Five more years…without…Minato?" Mana said, sadness and despair filling her heart.

Just like that, Mana burst into tears and ran out of the ballroom with Mitsu, Haru, and Yusuke chasing after her.

"Mana, wait! Come back!" Mitsu called after her sister as she and her parents chased after her.

Minato's heart broke a little knowing that his announcement made one of his girlfriends cry, and it only broke more when he saw the heartbroken look on the faces of his family, Ann especially.

"No way," Ann thought to herself, "This can't be happening."

Minato gave one last look at all of the party goers before wrapping up his speech.

"Well, that's my plan," Minato said, "Again, I'm sorry if it's not what you all were expecting, but…it is what it is."

"'It is what it is' he says," Ann said in disbelief as Ren rubbed her shoulder in an attempt to calm her down, "Unbelievable."

"Well, I'm officially uncomfortable," Kaito said as he came up to Kimiko and Morgana, "I'm going outside to get some fresh air and take my mind off of things. You two want to come with me?"

"Sure," Kimiko said as she and Morgana followed Kaito out of the ballroom and out to the front of the hotel.

Once outside, Kimiko and Kaito sat themselves down on the bench with Morgana hopping up on Kimiko's lap so she could pet him while she talked with her boyfriend.

"Man, I can't believe Minato," Kimiko said, "He gets home after spending most the last four years away from us, and now he wants to spend five more in Africa. At least before we could just hop in the car, or take a bus or a train to see him, but now he's going to be an ocean apart and it'll be almost impossible to see him face-to-face. I can only imagine how Mitsu and especially Mana must be feeling right now."

"I hate to bring down your mood even further, babe, but did you really think Minato would stick around forever?" Kaito asked, "He's an adult now fresh out of college. He's free to make his own decisions and carve his own path. And if this is what needs to be done for him to do so, then so be it."

"God, I hate when you're right," Kimiko said as she let her boyfriend's words sink in.

"But you love me regardless, right?" Kaito asked in an attempt to bring her spirits back up.

"You better believe it, sexy," Kimiko smiled as she gave Kaito a kiss, "I guess I just miss the days when Minato and I were inseparable and we were each others' ride or die. Sure we argued every now and again, but what pair of siblings don't? I just feel like we've been drifting further and further apart ever since he left for college. I won't lose him, Kaito."

"We're not going to lose, Minato, Kim," Kaito said as he hugged Kimiko, "He's never going to forget about us, just like we won't forget about him. And trust me, these next five years are going to go by fast. Minato will be back home with us before you even know it, then everything will be nice and peaceful, just like they used to be."

"Yeah," Kimiko smiled, "Nice and peaceful."

The couple and cat just sat in silence for a few minutes, enjoying each other's company before Kaito opened his mouth again.

"So," Kaito began, "Are you still thinking about attending school in Kyoto?"

"Yeah," Kimiko answered, "I still haven't gotten around to telling my parents yet. I just don't know how they'll react, especially after the news Minato dropped on us."

"Well, when you do decide to tell them, maybe you can also tell them the answer to the question I'm about to ask you," Kaito said.

"What question?" Kimiko asked.

"I've been meaning to ask you this question for quite some time," Kaito said before Kimiko cut him off.

"Does this question involve you and me moving in together?" Kimiko asked cutely.

"Who-Who told you?" Kaito asked in shock.

"I remember back in my senior prom when you tried to ask me a question multiple times," Kimiko said, "Then earlier today, Mana and Mitsu wanted to know if you asked me if I wanted to move in with you. I assume your question was about that notion?"

Kaito nodded and said, "Yes, Kim. We've been together for so long, and we've been very close friends for an even longer amount of time. And now that I'm a college student, and you're a soon-to-be college student, this feels like the perfect time to take our relationship to the next level and share a living space. So, what do you say, Kimiko? Would you like to move in with me?"

Kimiko had a big smile on her face. She remembered hearing from her mother about how great life was when she and Ren moved in together, and she wanted something very similar to that. She quickly gave Kaito a hug, and that action gave Kaito his answer.

"Oh, yes, Kaito!" Kimiko exclaimed, "I'd love to move in with you!"

"Really?" Kaito asked happily, "Oh, this is great! Just think, you and me, a pair of stalwart lovers living together in Kyoto, I love it!"

"I love it too," Kimiko smiled, "But not as much as I love you!"

"I love you too, Kim," Kaito said as she and Kimiko kissed each other to celebrate.

Morgana, however, was still seated in Kimiko's lap, meaning he overheard everything.

"Oh man," Morgana thought to himself, "Lady Ann is not going to be happy about this."

Later that night, after the party wrapped up, we cut to the Amamiya Residence where we see Ren and Ann setting Akihiro, Rika, and Masaru up in the guest bedroom as they offered it to them so they could save money on renting a hotel room for the night. Morgana was also with them, and Minato and Kimiko were elsewhere in the house, likely their bedrooms.

"Thanks for letting Rika, Masaru, and I crash at your place for the night, Ren," Akihiro said as he and Rika finished setting up Masaru's travel crib.

"Hey, you're basically my son by blood, Akihiro," Ren said, "It's the least I can do for you and your family."

"Speaking of family, how are you guys holding up after Minato's little announcement at the party?" Rika asked.

"Well, I'd be lying if I said we weren't surprised," Ren said, "But, we knew that Minato wouldn't want to hang around here forever and he'd want to try and make it on his own."

"Oh, yes," Ann said, still a little irate, "We knew he'd want to make it on his own, we just didn't know he'd want to make it on his own while living halfway across the goddamn world!"

"Babe, it's only for five years," Ren said, trying to reason with his wife, "It's not like Minato is going to stay in Africa forever."

"A lot can happen in five years," Ann said, "What if he loves it so much there he decides to move there permanently? What if he meets another woman over there and calls it off with Mana and Mitsu? Bet you weren't thinking about those factors, were you?"

Ann then looked over at Rika and Masaru.

"Don't get too attached to your son, Rika," Ann said, "Once he turns 18, he's just going to leave you to never return and break your heart. Seriously, Ren and I raise Minato and nurture him over the last 23 years of his life and this is the thanks we get; just leaving us high and dry?"

"Ann, you need to relax," Ren said, "I know this news is upsetting, but we have to accept the fact that Minato is not a little boy anymore. He's a grown man who is capable of making his own decisions. Sure, those decisions could be ones we don't necessarily agree with, but they're his decisions to make. We have no say in them."

"It's just too soon for him to be going off on his own," Ann said, calming down a little, "Especially to a faraway land like Africa. It's not like I can be by his side should something bad happen to him. At least when he was in Nagoya it was just a quick bullet train ride or a four hour car trip there. This is a whole different ball park entirely."

"I understand your fears, babe," Ren said, "But we just have to trust that Minato knows what he's doing and that he'll be okay no matter what happens."

"He seemed pretty sure of his decision when I talked with him towards the end of his graduation party," Akihiro chimed in, "I think my half-brother knows exactly what he's doing."

"And besides, we still have Kimiko to dote over if you need to smother anyone with motherly love," Ren said in a joking manner…and Ann just looked at him with a deadpan expression.

"My baby is moving thousands of miles away from home, and you're over here cracking jokes!" Ann pouted.

"If you think you're upset now, Lady Ann, wait until you hear what Kimiko wants to do," Morgana said.

Ren and Ann looked at Morgana quizzically just as they heard footsteps approaching.

"Oh, that's probably Kimiko now," Morgana said, "You didn't hear anything from me."

Just as Morgana predicted, Kimiko appeared in front of the guest bedroom doorway to talk with her parents.

"Hey, guys," Kimiko said.

"Hey, Kim," Ren said, "What's up?"

"There's something I've been meaning to tell you," Kimiko began, "It's about my plans with college."

"Don't tell us you're having second thoughts about going to college, half-sister of mine," Akihiro said.

"No, I still plan on going to college," Kimiko said before taking a brief pause. She took a moment to collect her thoughts before continuing, "But I'm choosing to attend college in Kyoto, and I'll be moving in with Kaito so we can start a life together."

Hearing that greatly surprised Ren, Akihiro, and Rika, and further upset the already stressed out Ann.

"So, you're leaving too?" Ann asked her daughter.

"Not until the next semester begins," Kimiko said, "But, listen, I'm 19 years old now. I'm legally an adult and I want to go out and experience life. The best way for me to do that is to not only attend an acting school outside of Tokyo, but also to take the next step in my relationship with Kaito and move in with him. Kaito and I will still make a point to visit often, but for the most part, we'd both like to go out there and see what life has to offer for us."

The four adults, one cat, and one baby just stared at Kimiko in stunned silence before Ren finally spoke up.

"Well, I'm sure you have your reasons for wanting to go out on your own," Ren said, "You are right about being an adult now, Kimiko. And 19 was the age your mother and I were when we first moved in together. So, whatever you think is best, we support it."

Ann looked at Ren completely aghast. First Minato announced that he was leaving for home, now he just gave Kimiko the green light to move out.

"I think this is the best course of action for me, dad," Kimiko said, "Thank you."

With that, Kimiko left and returned to her bedroom. As soon as she left, all eyes were on Ann who was glaring at Ren in complete outrage.

"Are you kidding me, Ren?" Ann asked, feeling an untethered rage that hadn't experienced in the longest time, "First, you support Minato's decision to move to Africa, and now you're supporting Kimiko's decision to move out of the house?! You're pulling out all of the stops to prove you're 'Father of the Year' aren't you?! In three months from now Minato is going to be hanging out in some village somewhere, while Kimiko is snuggled next to Kaito in Kyoto, and neither of them are going to give us a second thought!"

Ren just looked at his wife absolutely dumbfounded. He'd never seen Ann this angry before, especially at him.

"I bet you didn't even stop to think about the plans I had for all of us when the holidays rolled around!" Ann continued, "We were going to build gingerbread houses, and watch Christmas movies, and sip hot chocolate! Minato and Kimiko love hot chocolate, and now they're leaving, and what are we going to do for Christmas!?"

Ren continued to look at his wife as he tried to come up with an answer.

"Uh…we could always build a float for the Christmas Parade in Shibuya," Ren said, hoping that would perk up Ann's mood somewhat…but, of course, that just made things worse.

"A parade," Ann asked in disbelief, reaching a new level of anger in the process, "I don't want build a goddamn float for the fucking Christmas Parade in fucking Shibuya! I want to turn back the goddamn clock to when Minato and Kimiko were eight and four years old and you and I were their whole goddamn world! But now they're about to be gone and there's nothing I can do! HOLY SHIT THE HUMANITY!"

With that, Ann stormed out of the guest bedroom and went off to the master bedroom, leaving Ren and the Hagiwaras in stunned silence.

"You could've just said 'no'!" Ren said before he and Morgana followed after her, "Babe, come back! Can't we talk about this?!"

With Ren gone, that leaves Akihiro, Rika, and Masaru alone in the guest bedroom.

"Yikes," Rika said, "Looks like Ren's in the doghouse now."

"What we just witnessed, my love, is the perfect example of what menopause can do to a woman," Akihiro said, trying to lighten the mood.

"I hope I don't get that bad," Rika said as she and her husband continued to put Masaru down for bed before they themselves turned in for the night.

As that was going on, we cut to the Mishima Residence where we see Yuuki, Futaba, Riku, and Mai return home from the graduation party.

"Aw man, that was some party," Riku said.

"I just can't believe Minato is going to Africa," Mai said, "How do you think Uncle Ren and Auntie Ann are taking the news?"

"Ren is pretty laid back, so I'm willing to bet he's taking it all in stride," Yuuki said, "Ann on the other hand, I'm not so sure about."

"Well, regardless of how they feel, we can all agree that Mitsu and especially Mana were devastated," Mai said, "Did you see how Mana ran out of the ballroom in tears?"

"I imagine news like that isn't easy to hear," Yuuki said, "Especially if you've been apart for as long as Mana, Mitsu, and Minato have."

"He'd better have some plan in the works if he wants to make it up to them," Riku said.

"Minato loves both of them dearly, Riku, I'm sure he's already thinking of something if he hasn't thought of a plan already," Riku said, "But enough about that, how about a quick game of Superb Shatter Dudes Ultimate before bed, everyone?"

"Sounds like a plan!" Riku smiled.

"Now you're talking our language," Mai said.

"Uh, you guys go ahead," Futaba said, still looking rather glum, "I think I'm going to turn in a bit early tonight."

Futaba headed upstairs as her family stared after her in worry. They've never seen her act this depressed before, and they weren't sure what was wrong with her.

"She's been like this all day," Mai said, "What do you guys think is wrong?"

"I'll go check it out," Yuuki said as he went upstairs to the master bedroom to talk with his wife.

When Yuuki made it to the master bedroom door, he knocked three times saying, "Futaba, babe, can we talk?"

"Fine," Futaba was heard on the other side of the door.

Yuuki opened the door and walked inside to find Futaba on the bed lying on her right side, facing away from the door. Cautiously, Yuuki joined her on the bed and lovingly rubbed her shoulder.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Yuuki asked in a soothing tone.

"It's over, Yuuki," Futaba said, "Glitch, the website that I stream on, it's filing for bankruptcy. The website got shut down three days ago meaning I'm out of a job, and one that I enjoyed very much."

"I see," Yuuki said, finally understanding his wife's dampened spirits. After giving her a peck on the cheek, he continued talking, "I understand this is upsetting news, sweetheart, but it's not the end of the world. You'll find another job, another site to stream on, maybe I can help you make one of your own."

"I appreciate the thought, but, I don't know if I have it in me," Futaba frowned, "I've spent so many years building up a follower base only for it all to come crashing down on me at this very moment. Now what, I'm expected to find a new site and start over? And who's to say that the other sites won't become defunct too? I don't know what I'm going to do."

"If you're worried about how we'll do financially, don't worry," Yuuki said, "I still have my blogs, I'm still making money from my Phantom Thieves documentary, and this time next year Riku and Mai will be out of the house and living on their own. We'll get by just fine."

"I don't care about getting by, Yuuki. I care about having a purpose in life," Futaba said, "Not only am I losing my job, but, like you said, Riku and Mai are going to be moving out soon. They're all grown up and they don't need us anymore. With no job and no kids to take care of, what does that leave me? I have no purpose in life."

There was a brief moment of silence so Yuuki could take in his wife's words. He felt so sorry for her at this moment in time and he wasn't sure how to make things better. But despite this, he's still going to try and lift her spirits because that's what a good husband does.

"Everything will be okay, Futaba," Yuuki said as he gave his wife another kiss on the cheek while holding her lovingly, "We'll find you another purpose in life. It's like what my grandfather used to say, 'When one door closes, another one opens'. Glitch may be gone and your time as a mother might be over, but something else might come along that'll be ten times better."

"You really think so?" Futaba asked.

"I know so," Yuuki said, "Trust me, the universe has an interesting way of working things out. Mark my words, this time next year, things will be looking up for you."

Yuuki and Futaba gave each other a kiss before spending the next couple of minutes cuddling each other's worries away until they both fell asleep in each other's arms.

As that was going on, we cut to the Watanabe residence where we see Shiho, Daisuke, and Kaito arrive home to Nariko, who was currently upstairs. In Shiho's hand was a grocery bag containing ginger ale and some saltines.

"Nariko, we're home," Daisuke called out.

"I'm in the bathroom!" Nariko said from the upstairs bathroom, "How was the party?"

"It was great, sis," Kaito said, "We wish you could've been there."

"We'll elaborate more when you come down here," Daisuke said.

"We bought some crackers and ginger ale for your stomach," Shiho said, "Are you feeling any better?"

"Uh, kind of," Nariko responded.

"Do you need any help up there?" Daisuke asked.

"No," Nariko said, "No, dad. I'm fine."

We then cut to the upstairs bathroom where we find a shocked looking Nariko as she sits on the toilet…while holding a pregnancy test that reads 'positive'; Nariko is pregnant with hers and Riku's child!

"Oh, Nariko," Nariko asked herself as she stared at the positive pregnancy test, "You really did it this time."

At this moment, Nariko had two things on her mind. First, what would her parents think about this? And second, and most importantly, what would Riku think about this? She inevitably decided to keep it a secret from her parents, but to tell Riku as soon as possible.

After throwing the pregnancy test in a nearby wastebasket, making sure it was on the bottom of the bag concealed by the rest of the trash, Nariko left the bathroom and joined her family downstairs.

TO BE CONTINUED…
