A light shined in the darkness and pushed it away. In white sheets, a boy and a girl fell down through water with a splash. Their sheets glowed brightly and left their bodies. The boy had fluffy, wood-brown hair with a prominent ahoge and feminine, doll-like appearance. The girl has short, dark brown hair with a tint of green, and physically appeared to be a year younger.

The children stirred awake, their eyes the color of spring green, and righted themself before settling onto a dark platform. They looked around and took individual steps forward. There was a flash of blinding light as a large flock of birds rose from the platform, flying in all directions and scattering feathers everywhere. Both children shielded their eyes as the wind whipped at them.

They looked around and then saw a light falling from the darkness. The glowing orb flew into the cupped hands of the boy before dissipating into the form of a book. On the back was a symbol depicted as the outline of a heart with tips that curl inward at its top. The spine of the book displayed a Roman numeral for seven VII, along with the title "Liber Future Praeteritum" by Makoto and Komaru Naegi.

The Naegi siblings looked at each other with their frowns skewed. They both stood on an enormous, illuminated stained-glass pillar. One that depicted Makoto and Komaru opposite each other.

A room sat in silence with symbols and pictures lining the walls not covered in bookshelves. Upon a bed seated beneath a large window, laid Makoto, gazing at the ceiling. He wore a sleeveless white shirt with golden straps and a belt with the Twin's and Baku. Over this outfit, he wore green robes with detached sleeves, each possessing white buttons on them.

Green bell sleeves and white fingerless gloves adorned his arms. Makoto donned a short light-colored hakama with a belt with lines merging into a star-shaped emblem instead of trousers. He sat up with a sigh before he looked out the window and gasped upon seeing several shooting stars in the sky. The sixteen-year-old boy placed his hands on the glass in excitement. Makoto jumped off the bed and ran out of the room.

An Old School Building that bears a strong resemblance to the University of Tokyo fades in over a modern, urban world. The city appears fairly similar to the Bunkyō district of Tokyo, with some distinct variations and differences. As a glitch-like, disembodied voice says "Danganronpa," the name of the world appears in a blocky font with the word "City" in graffiti:

In another room, Komaru was asleep in her bed. A wooden desk with book storage above it, a few drawers, a single chair, a landscape picture, and a mirror were all included in the room. As the Naegi girl slept, her older brother poked his head over the edge of her bed.

"Komaru! Psst!" Makoto whispered. He got onto the bed and began pestering his fifteen-year-old sister, using his hands to bounce on her right shoulder. "Komaru! Wake up, wake up, wake up!" Komaru was still smiling in her sleep peacefully, and wanted to keep it that way.

"Onii-chan…! Go back to sleep…!" A drowsy Komaru said with a smile. Unfortunately for her, Makoto turned around and laid on his younger sister with his back.

"But I cannot, Komaru! I am awake because the sky's awake. So we must engage in play!" Makoto said dramatically.

"Or you can go play by yourself," said Komaru. She playfully pushed her brother off both herself and the bed, causing the older Naegi to land on the floor with a cute "oof!" The eyebrows of the bishōjo trap furrowed as he puffed his cheeks. He sat on the floor for a moment before he smiled again. Standing back up, Makoto crawled back into the bed a little and opened the sleeping, smiling Komaru's eye with his index finger.

"But there's a meteor shower~," Makoto sang. This made Komaru's smile grow wider when she finally opened her eyes.

Naegi House: Training Grounds

Hope's Peak City

.

Makoto and Komaru ran out of their three-story, shoin-zukuri style home and into the backyard, which served as their training grounds. Komaru was dressed in a hooded white-and-turquoise outfit with two little rabbit ears. Her skirt had turquoise ruffles on one side and checkered on the other, and she's wearing blue-striped biking shorts below. She was dressed in heavy belted black boots, thin white bangles on her left wrist, and a thick wristband on her right. The siblings look up at the stars with wide eyes and smiles.

"Wow!" They said as one. Makoto and Komaru laid down on the ground, Makoto folding his arms behind his head as they watched the shooting stars together. Under the night sky, the backyard was lined with trees overlooking the valley below. There was silence for several beats before Makoto asked, "Hey, Komaru."

"Hm?" She looked at her brother.

"According to the Future Past book, it is said that every star up there is another world," he said. "That the light is their hearts, and it's shining down on us like a million lanterns. So, suppose you get to another world. What would you do there?" Komaru furrowed her eyebrows as she looked upwards.

She then sat up and looked at the night's horizon.

"Well, I haven't really thought about it, Onii-chan. It's just…" she paused before holding her hand. A Keyblade flashed into her grasp. "I've always wondered why we have the Keyblade. If there are any other worlds out there, why were we chosen out of everyone else on this one? Not to mention that suppose there are other worlds… Then ours is just a little piece of something much greater. So we could've just as easily ended up somewhere else, right?"

"I suppose," Makoto shrugged from his tranquil lay.

"Exactly. I've been thinking we should go out there and find out," Komaru said. She dismissed her Keyblade and stood up. "Just sitting here won't change a thing. It's the same old stuff. After we solve the problem that is coming to this world, let's just go, Onii-chan." Makoto sat up and smiled at his sister.

"You've been thinking a lot lately, haven't you?" Makoto asked. To tell the truth, Makoto had been doing the same. Ever since they, according to the book, reacquired their Keyblades and powers, he and Komaru couldn't help but wonder what else was true. A world composed of many smaller worlds, all connected, stretching as far as the eye can see. It was a lot to believe when you grow up in a society where the truth is what you see with your eyes, not what you hear.

Makoto and Komaru only had the LFP's word for it, so they couldn't believe the Ultimate Fashionista was planning such a catastrophic nightmare. The Future Past dubbed it the Biggest, Most Awful, Most Despair-inducing Event in Human History. The first mutual killing game was initiated by the Ultimate Fashionista, who forced the Student Council at Hope's Peak Academy. All the members, except for one of her own and the council president, who was seriously wounded, were killed. Ultimate Fashionista then sparked a revolt among Reserve Course students against Main Course students.

She edited a video that could brainwash the audience into perceiving things through her own distorted perspective. She brainwashed most Class 77-B members into working for Ultimate Despair. Junko enticed the Reserve Course into destroying the Academy, before being stopped by Junko's command to commit mass suicide. As the movement spread over the world, an underlying oddity became obvious.

People became desensitized as the violence and death spread. The news was filled with death, and people ate while they watched. Terrorists and coups quickly arose, causing the hopelessness that is war. The overwhelming despair became a tsunami that engulfed the entire planet in the blink of an eye.

As a result, no solution to the problem was discovered. This was because of the existence of a certain set of people. It centered on certain kids who drove Hope's Peak Academy to its demise, a group known as Ultimate Despair. Their gifts, as acknowledged by Hope's Peak Academy, we're employed not 'for the goal of providing hope for mankind,' but 'for the sake of causing despair for humanity.' This is how the greatest, worst, and most horrific event in human history was created.

Fortunately, Makoto and Komaru were tasked by their LFP to prevent that from happening in this second chance. It was their duty as Keyblade wielders to use the Keyblade to protect what was left of the Realm of Light. This included the world of Hope's Peak City. Makoto smiled at his younger sister and said, "Well, we had a lot to consider with everything we learned. The Tragedy and the Keyblade War."

"If it wasn't for the book, I probably would've never thought of this," said Komaru. "I think I'm ready to do my part and I think you're ready, too, Onii-chan."

"Komaru… Thanks." Makoto wore a broad, closed smile, turning up to rosy cheeks.

"You're welcome," his sister giggled. "So, Onii-chan, since we're up and have to move to the city today, do you wanna spar?"

Komaru summoned Shinjitsu Key to her hand again and fell into the chūdan-no-kamae stance. After a moment of stillness, Makoto and Komaru rushed to each other and clashed their Keyblades. They pulled back before Makoto went in for a strike, but it was deflected by Komaru's blade. They collided twice before Komaru made a large underhand swing at Makoto, who flipped backward. Komaru swiped at her brother left and right, Makoto dodging both swings.

Makoto sliced at her, but she jumped back to dodge. He charged at Komaru again and she dodged, barely missing the blade. Komaru jumped back further, yet Makoto gave her no chance to breathe before he started running toward her once more. His younger sister readied herself and blocked a blow from Makoto. The Naegi siblings continued to exchange blows with each other as dawn broke over the land.

Soon, Makoto and Komaru were watching the sunrise, having finished their friendly bout. Makoto's eyes shimmered like green gemstones as he gazed at the work of art. He recalled the dream he and his sister had a while back and what one of their new friends gave them. He pulled out a five-pointed star-shaped charm made from stained glass. It had a silver frame and brown stitches with a brown cord tied to the topmost shell, and the token was a Lux, a star-shaped particle of light from the age of fairy tales.

A second, smaller star made of a rainbow of stained glass materials is attached to the opposite end of the cord. Makoto's "Thalassa shells" were predominantly forest green with spring green tips. Makoto took the charm into his left hand and held it up to the sun. Komaru looked at him with a smile before moving to do the same, her charm taking the colors of golden orange and sunshine yellow tips.

"Together…" said Makoto.

"… Always," Komaru finished.

At an airport in the city, a particular airplane was landing on a runway. Up front, a black Rolls-Royce luxury car pulled up to the curb where others were gathered to either board a plane or depart. The back door on the left opened up as a woman was heard. In the distance, a relatively tiny figure watched with a dark chuckle as the woman stepped out. They witnessed her throw a white leather clutch wallet on the bag seat.

They said in a cutesy tone, "Well, well! Look who's finally ready to play!"

The car drove away with the sounds of ticking unheard in the backseat, where a leather clutch purse ticked like a crocodile. After seven clicks, it exploded on one bridge of the airport. A crowd gathered at the entrance of the airport to destruction and death, with an energy in the air now, a question left in the back of everyone's minds. The ravishing, yet deadly flower of a model with strawberry-blonde pigtails walked away from her hedonistic crime unnoticed.

After the commotion calmed down a bit, the model sat on fifteen different colored suitcases stacked orderly on top of one another, waiting. Her name was Junko Enoshima, the Ultimate Fashionista. Just then, another young woman appeared before her from one gate, closely resembling Junko. However, with noticeable differences such as her lily colored eyes and short black hair bob.

"The other of the Despair Sisters - the smelly one: Mukuro Ikusaba," said Junko as she wrote in a small blue journal. The freckled Ultimate Soldier, Mukuro Ikusaba, came to a halt before her sister.

"Hey, Junko. I'm grateful you came to meet me and all, but what are you doing?" Mukuro asked, her tone devoid of much emotion.

"Duh! I'm doing the narration," Junko said. Neither sister had yet to notice a small and mysterious individual now stood between them.

"Oh… Okay, cool," she said, looking at her younger twin with a ghostly smile. Junko continued to write. Mukuro blushed with a smile as she looked at her younger twin. "Oh, Junko…"

"Oh, wow…!" A cutesy, androgynous voice sounded between them. The Despair Sisters snapped out of their thoughts, their attention drawn to the figure between them. They wore an ankle-length black leather coat with a huge hood that concealed their faces and long sleeves. The coat was closed at both ends by a huge silver zipper with pulls at the top and bottom. The hood was adorned with two silver drawstrings, each with a huge silver bead dangling from the end. A silver chain ornament with lobster claw clasps on either end fastens to loops on each side of the collarbone area.

"Oh, are you some kind of fan?" Junko asked. "I know that some of you are weird, but you must take the cake-"

"Your heart is filled with darkness. How adorable," the figure chirped. Unfortunately, that comment made Junko's smug attitude drop and her eyes grow wide. Junko wasn't, secretly, the Ultimate Analyst for nothing. She knew that darkness was just as much associated with despair as death, destruction, and chaos. What they said next only made them grow wider because, in the second she blinked, they were right next to her ear. Using her own laugh in a sickeningly cute tone.

"Upupu! This simply isn't fair, Junko-chan! How come you didn't tell me you were planning something so fun?"

Junko was so startled, she fell off all her suitcases as the figure did a backflip in the opposite direction.

"Junko!" Mukuro ran to her twin who was now partially buried under her own baggage. The attention of everyone in the airport was now drawn to the trio. Mukuro got into a defensive-combat stance as she helped Junko return to her feet. Junko didn't actually feign discomfort as she quickly got into character. She felt incredibly vulnerable.

"Okay, enough games. Who the flip are you, creep!?" Junko said, pointing a finger. Noticing security coming towards them, the figure held up an index.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hold that thought." The figure snapped their gloved fingers and said, "Stop!" Suddenly, everyone surrounding the three froze in motion. Almost as if time itself simply fell asleep. Junko looked around with furrowed eyebrows and her jaw dropped.

She had seen nothing like this before. That said… Mukuro has. In fact, she recognised the attire and annoying voice. The Ultimate Soldier's calm demeanor slowly turned to uncharacteristic teeth, grinding and growling.

"YOU!" Mukuro roared, making Junko flinch. Junko wasn't used to surprises because of her genuine talent. It allowed her to study her environment with near supernatural speed, deep thought, and memorization. Also, Mukuro was Junko's older twin sister and the Ultimate Fashionista knew she had the same personality as a gun in the Ultimate Soldier's hand. Cold, serious, reserved, and indifferent towards others unless it was Junko herself.

This behavior was incredibly out of the ordinary for the older Despair Sister. The figure tilted their head and asked, "Me? Do I know you?"

"You thought you could hide from ME!?" Mukuro yelled, ripping out her combat knife and handgun. "You'll pay for what you did! I will kill you, slowly, painfully and in all the ways you fear!" She released an intimidating roar before leaping forward.

The Ultimate Soldier charged the stranger who dodged her gunfire in place. As she moved to cut him down, he easily held her combat knife between his index and thumb.

"Pay for what? Do I owe you something?" The figure asked innocently.

"Don't mess with me!" Mukuro asked. "Have you forgotten how you ambushed me in Afghanistan!? Left me clueless to your superiors and embarrassed me to my commanders!?"

"Whoops! Sorry, I guess I did," they answered without a care in the world. "I usually always forget about the losers I've owned, after I change my underwear." Faster than the Ultimate Soldier could react, the figure spun around and kicked at Mukuro's face with the force of lifting dust from the floor. Mukuro jumped back and prepared to fight until she felt an unknown, yet familiar sensation on her right cheek. Reaching to touch it, she looked at her hand to see a red fluid on it.

Her eyes jerked to her face and saw the feeling on her skin… was blood. Her blood. Mukuro Ikusaba was not the Ultimate Soldier for nothing. Mukuro left her family in Europe when she was a young girl to be recruited and trained by the Fenrir Mercenary Group. She was never injured on the battlefield during her time in the group. And now, this… nobody… just comes into her life and insults her by doing something highly trained soldiers could only dream of!

They… cut… her!? Mukuro Ikusaba.

Mukuro took little pride in many things except her sister, however, she took some pride in being the Ultimate Soldier. She killed many people and worked long and hard to earn that title.

"Upupu! Gosh! This won't do," they said to Mukuro. "I was hoping you'd be more fun, but you're not!" Mukuro couldn't see their face, but she felt it in her soul that this figure was smiling at her. Like a cat would if it could express its smug pride.

"I am the Ultimate Soldier!" Mukuro said, her tone low. "I killed thousands on the battlefield, and yet… you think you can mess with ME?!" Mukuro charged at the stranger again.

"Ooh! Tough talk," they said in response to Mukuro's blind rage. "I hate when they do that. So annoying." The stranger spread out their hands, a dark aura slowly manifesting as the Ultimate Soldier closed in on him.

.

Suddenly, the duel was interrupted before it could even begin. Another mysterious figure dressed in a black coat fell from the ceiling and forced Mukuro to jump back over to Junko, gritting her teeth. However, Junko could definitely tell this one was actually female by their proportions and voice.

"Now, now, Onii-chan," she said to the first stranger. "There's no point in torturing the unfortunate." Junko could feel the vanity and vainglory rolling off this new enigmatic individual. It was as if this little Miss Thing thought she was better than everyone. The "brother" giggled at the sister's comment.

"Well, well! Good afternoon, darling little sister of mine! It took you long enough," he said. The sister walks over to her brother with a dark chuckle, shaking her head as she holds her hands behind her back.

"I'm pretty sure the boss instructed you not to play with your food because it wastes too much time," she said. Walked over to his right and held him close in a disturbingly close pose. "Now we have more important things to deal with than a couple of unimportant puppets of darkness."

"Well, that's fine! We can leave," the brother said. "Daddy and auntie were boring, anyway." As they spoke, Junko and Mukuro's eyes widened more and more.

"What? Daddy and…" Junko struggled to find the words. "Wait, what the hell!? Just who are you really!?"

The brother was suddenly right behind Junko as he said, "Who are we indeed! That is an excellent question." Mukuro slashed at him with her knife before trying to shoot him point blank. However, she missed both times as he dodged and jumped back, turning away from the Despair Sisters as he sauntered off a little with his arms outstretched. "To be honest, who I am doesn't matter to you. So I may tell you I'm a trickster while, in fact, I'm a superb artist or even a scholar."

"I may tell you I wish for world peace when, in fact, I intend to destroy it. What you see with your eyes, not what you hear, is the truth. Wouldn't you agree, Junko-chan?"

"SHUT UP AND DIE ALREADY!" Mukuro pointed her gun. She cocked the weapon, yet didn't move to pull the trigger. The Ultimate Soldier may have been angry, but following orders was still ingrained to her consciousness. At least she could look at Junko's face and see an equal amount of irritation. However, Mukuro also noticed that his sister seemed confused, as if Junko couldn't analyze the current situation.

"Riddles… I despise riddles…" Junko hissed. "Alright, what the hell do you want from us!?"

"What the hell do you want from us?" The sister said in a mocking tone to the Despair Sisters. "You two have nothing we want, but this world itself might. You see… we're here to see the door to this world, of course." The Despair Sisters were now officially confused.

Door to this world? What was this woman talking about? The sister continued, "This world has been connected."

"Yep, yep, yep! Tied to the darkness… soon to be completely eclipsed," the boy chirped. He was bouncing in place a bit, like a child having way too much fun. Junko scrunched her eyes and eyebrows downward as she gritted her teeth in an open frown.

.

🎵 Strange Whispers 🎵

.

"What are you talking about?" Junko growled. The mysterious figures looked at each other before they broke down into laughter.

"You, you don't have the slightest clue, do you? Oh, how exciting this must be," he said. "There is already very much to learn and you - the great Junko Enoshima, the Ultimate Analyst - understand so little. Poor baby…!" Junko glowered at the black coat before sneering, her well-manicured nails digging into the flesh of her palms in a tight fist. What were these two trying to say, exactly?

That she was the dumb one? She was Junko Enoshima! Her genuine gift enabled her to examine her environment at near superhuman speed, with deep reasoning and memorizing. She could gain and comprehend new abilities and talents by only seeing or studying them once if she wanted to. Junko only had the title of Ultimate Fashionita because her analytical skills assisted her in predicting trends. They allowed her to foresee what would become fashionable with society.

Months of extensive planning for others might be completed in a matter of minutes by her thinking. Junko could read people and manipulate them while sleeping! She could often foresee what someone would do before they did it, which she used to overcome opponents far stronger than her. And here this little twerp was calling her stupid when she could drive him to the depths of despair in a second? Junko finally said, "I understand little? Hahaha haha! Are you serious? You actually crack me up! Alright then, explain something to me?"

The male stranger tilted their head innocently.

"You're virtually oozing with potential, right? Can you do anything? So, like, say… you could suddenly die, leaving everyone in despair!" Junko pulled an ice pick out of nowhere and charged the eerie siblings with a mad grin. However, much like her sister before, the improvised weapon never made it past the boy's index and thumb.

"It's cute that you think so highly of me that anyone would actually miss me," he said. His tone so sickly sweet as he inched forward, his face nowhere to be found. "However, if I were to kill you, that would cause much more of that despair you crave." Junko's eyes twitched as the boy walked away and continued his speech. "For example, if I killed you with a gun and left your sister alive with no other evidence that she didn't shoot you with the gun on her person, she would fall into despair. Or if I kill both of you, but I left no clue who I am or where we went or who we work for, people will look for someone to blame, right?"

The male stranger held his arms behind his back and tilted her head coyly, while either leaning forward off angle. He said, "The only clue they could find is a note so vague that it could be interpreted as a terrorist threat from any country. Pinning others against each and leading to war! Because if you were to kill me… no one would panic since I don't exist."

"But if I say one little fashion model died, the crowds go wild!" The boy leaned forward towards Junko. "But you already knew that. Just like you know how predictable the despair you crave truly is… Junko Enoshima!" Junko gave the stranger a derisive sneer, very much like a supervillain. She had to give the little guy his kudos, though - he knew how to play the evil mastermind with his attitude.

However, even though the Ultimate Fashionista had little room to talk, the kid was crazy. Her - Junko Enoshima - boring and predictable? What, is he a rejected philosopher or something? She laughed as she said, "And you say I don't get it. I guess with cold hard reasoning, not all roads lead to Rome."

Junko tilted her head back up, her ice-cold eyes glowing eerily from the shadows of her strawberry blonde locks. "You see… Despair is the great unknown. A girl can only be this smart for so long before ennui set's in, that's the curse of being bright. Everyone goes on and on about Hope, but what they really mean is 'status quo!'" She slowly approached the strangers as Mukuro stood back, glaring at the duo.

"Ah, but Despair is the big o' mystery box! There's nothing like it to get the blood pumping, synapse's firing, the senses tingling…!" Junko cupped her cheek as she drooled, a blush painted across her face. "It straight up shatter's the status quo and paves the way for chaos! It's as you said, don't you think? When a single assassin's bullet can plunge humanity into world war, none of us are as far from the abyss as we like to tell ourselves!"

"Embrace that simple fact and Voila! You're in for the ride of your life! Look at me, every nerve ending is at eleven and Despair did that!" Junko squealed as she marched towards the mysterious boy and inched her face closer with crazy eyes. With an eerie seriousness, she said, "Come on, pumpkin pie. Some part of you has to understand." There was silence between them again. Then…

"Heh… Heh heh… HAHAHA HAHAHA!" The boy laughed. Not the cutesy giggle he was making before. A maniacal laughter that felt so empty, it actually made Junko's skin crawl. Red and blue irises illuminated from the darkness of his hood. He made it worse by running an index down to the tip of her chin, and she noticed something disquieting…

His hands were as cold as ice, similar to the chilling tone of his voice as he said, "A meaningless effort. One who knows nothing can understand nothing."

He threw his hand behind him and a massive orb of dark energy appeared from nowhere. The girl went in first as her brother walked backwards to it.

"You do not yet know… what lies beyond the door…" he said finally. Then, as the portal consumed him, it disappeared and time returned to normal. Noticing this, Mukuro hid all of her weapons faster than the blink of an eye. She ran up to her younger twin sister.

"J-Junko…?" Mukuro called to her as Junko chewed her nails frantically with a deep scowl on her face.

"Who… were they? He knew the truth about me," she hissed beneath her breath. "How did he know everything only Muku-nee and I know? This… This isn't how it's supposed to be. Any of it." Mukuro frowned, but she couldn't deny that there seemed to be a certain logic to what Junko just stated. If this mysterious boy somehow knew everything about them… what else was he hiding?

Mukuro reached forward to grab onto her sister's shoulder.

"What should we do, Junko? Assume the worst and make plans just like always?" Mukuro scowled at the space the strangers left. She wasn't even sure if they were truly gone. What if they were hiding in the shadow's, watching everything unfold from afar like hawks. Laughing in amusement as they watched their prey struggle to escape?

Waiting for their perfect opportunity to strike?

"No," the younger twin responded, still staring at the spot the strangers had vanished from, too. "Let's just wait. After all… this might be interesting. But this might not even be important in the long run… who knows? Maybe he will show up again."

First District

Hope's Peak City

.

The bulk of the world was a quaint and calm city divided into several districts. All of it was embellished with many bright lights and included many shops for the public. They catered to a variety of lifestyles and interests befitting its vibrant and diverse culture. The city has cobblestone streets and has a transit system with streetcars following a groove in the roadway. Most of the buildings are brick, only a few stories in height, and bore a resemblance to Tokyo.

The First District's streets were being adorned for the 300th Anniversary Celebration. Makoto and Komaru were going through it all with an amazed Komaru in front, proudly displaying red, yellow, and green streamers and balloons. An old shopkeeper was putting up a sign that said "WELCOME TO HOPE'S PEAK ACADEMY!" in big red lettering for all the incoming first years.

"Wow…! So this is Hope's Peak Academy," said Komaru, the brightest smile she could muster. She pointed to a poster. "And look, Onii-chan! A festival and parade? That sounds fun!"

"You're so adorable, Komaru! But you're right, I think it sounds like a lot of fun." Makoto giggled before he looked up with a head tilt. "Although, I can't help but wonder why the festival wasn't included in our book. Also, the parade sounds like nothing we wrote in the book, too. I actually see the plans for floats."

"Quiet, you! Stop taking a good thing and make it sound boring by bringing the book into this," Komaru complained.

"E-Excuse me, the name's Naegi, isn't it?" The siblings stopped walking and looked at each other before turning around to see who called them out. Komaru's jaw fell to the floor while her brother tilted his head as his eyes fell upon the young woman before them. A teenage beauty with skin white as snow and hair a blue color of the deep accompanied by eyes to match. She asked, "We went to the same middle school?"

"Miss Maizono…?" Makoto asked, his head still tilted off kilter. Sayaka Maizono smiled at the Naegi boy while slightly covering it with her hand.

"What a relief! There's someone here I know," said Sayaka. The Ultimate Idol could have sworn she saw a question mark suddenly form in and out of existence over his head. Must have been a trick of light.

"Wait… Do you remember me?" Makoto looked up, furrowing his eyebrows. "I recall us seeing each other around the school, but we never actually talked face to face." Before Sayaka could start teasing, a starry-eyed Komaru was suddenly in her face. After she launched her brother across the street with inhuman strength.

"Nice to meet you, too, Komaru," the idol greeted slowly but kindly. "You just tossed your brother across the street. Is he going to be alright?"

"Oh, he's fine! Just look - ACK!" Komaru's smile cringed into a frown as she turned to look at her brother.

"Hmm? Wh-What wr - AHH!" Sayaka yelped. Across the street where Makoto was launched, Makoto was slowly opening his eyes before he looked up.

"What on earth…!" A tall and slender young man rose to his hands and knees as he rubbed his canary blonde head. He positioned one of his hands - failing to notice the small yelp from underneath him - as he picked up his glasses and placed them over his lapis blue eyes. Unfortunately for both parties involved, this allowed him to see that he was in a very indecent position. To make matters worse, the hand holding the blonde teen up was atop the beauty's chest. A bead of sweat formed with the snappily dressed blonde as his forehead turned pale as a scowl spread over his fallen jaw.

"U-Um, a-apologies for -"

"Overprotective IMŌTO KICK!"

Komaru never thought in her wildest dreams that her idol of all people would join her in an Overprotective Imōto Kick. Best day ever. The two sent the poor Reserve Course teen flying as they kicked him in the face. While Sayaka ran over to brutalize the offender, Komaru fell to one knee and held her brother's hand like a gallant knight defending her princess.

"Oh, Onii-chan! Are you alright? I'm sorry," she said. Makoto stared at Komaru for several beats before he closed his eyes, furrowed his brows, and sighed heavily with a broad frown. His sister really was something else. Despite knowing well enough that Makoto can properly take care of himself, she goes overboard in any effort to protect him. Not only is it a problem when engaging with others, causing misunderstanding, but it was also a problem for the siblings' work dynamic.

Makoto didn't want to be treated like a damsel in distress; he wanted to be equal. He wielded the Keyblade too, after all.

"Komaru… You know that this is technically your fault, right?" Makoto scolded. "Don't go attacking others for misunderstandings you caused. After all, you're the one who threw me at this poor man Sayaka is currently trying to murder for no reason in broad daylight!" Makoto pointed at the couple and the Idol indeed had her hands wrapped around the blonde's scrawny neck with unexpected strength. "From now on, please take accountability and responsibility for your own actions."

"I'm just trying to protect your innocence…" Komaru whimpered.

"That's not an excuse," said Makoto. He then turned to Sayaka who froze in her place, dropping the young man she was strangling as she was covered in sweat. "As for you, Miss Maizono, whatever personal feeling you have mustn't cause you to lose your manners." Although she was smiling, it was wobbly, and a tear fell from her eyes.

"Yes, sir…" she whined a bit. The blonde sat up right as he rubbed his neck and groaned, almost growling. He leveled an icy glare at the idol who flinched under it.

"You barbaric brute! What gives you the right to assault me!? Over a misunderstanding, no less!?" The blonde demanded. Sayaka now sat on her knees. As her forehead turned a pale blue, she sweated profusely. Sayaka Maizono, the Ultimate Idol, just straight up assaulted someone, and from the way he spoke, there was no doubt he was probably someone really rich. So not good. If word of this got out, the scandal would be so bad, her career as an Idol would be all but over.

She could see the headlines now. 'Ultimate Idol assault's Rich Asshole at Hope's Peak Academy Festival!'

Sayaka hyperventilated until her Makoto tapped the blonde on the shoulder with a smile.

"Excuse me, I'm sorry for all the trouble my sister and Miss Maizono cause." Makoto performed a keirei bow with an inclination of about 30° of the upper body. "I'm certain they didn't mean any harm, but if there is anything I can do to help, then let me know." He pointed his hand out to the right and suddenly a massive pyramid of 10,000 yen notes appeared next to him, around ¥800,000,000. "I will gladly compensate them for any damages or pain they might have caused."

"In return, please forgive their impulsiveness…" As Makoto bowed again, the others were in various expressions. As she kneeled, Komaru was quiet as tears flowed from her closed eyes. Sayaka, now back on her feet, contorted her face hilariously as her jaw dropped and eyebrows furrowed. Byakuya scowled at the money, a bead of sweat trickling down his temple.

Normally, he would be offended and refuse if it wasn't for a few things. For example, they could easily spin this situation in their favor by claiming they were trying to assault the young woman in the… bizarre kimono. The second problem… was the money appearing out of nowhere. How in the world does money just appear out of nowhere? He was from one of the richest families in the world and even he knows money comes from somewhere.

The Naegi Sibling also knows this. Komaru thought, "Onii-chan, do you know how many Heartless we're going to have to go through later to get that back?"

"Who's fault is it I am giving this much Munny away, dear sister?" Makoto asked. Yes, that's right. Munny - an ancient and magical currency that is used all over the worlds. Golden cubic-orbs capable of transmuting into the currencies of various worlds. Best part was that the yen was legitimate thanks to its magic power and no one could tell the difference.

With a sharp inhale, the blonde sighed, "You know what, let's forget this… all of this happened. I don't even want the money, I just want out." Makoto raised his eyebrows as frown skewed with his head tilt.

"Are you certain? You're here as a main course student for Hope's Peak Academy, right? I'd rather not have any possible bad blood with a potential classmate," the Keyblade Wielder asked.

"Correct! The name is Byakuya Togami," he introduced himself. "I am the heir of the Togami family's global financial corporation, and so the Ultimate Heir. Despite the odds stacked against you, for… personal reasons of mine, the reason I am still standing here is that you have piqued my curiosity. What's your name?" Makoto gasped before smiling at the Heir of the Togami Corporation.

"My name is Makoto Naegi, and I am joining Hope's Peak Academy as well!" Makoto said, "I actually won a lottery. I'm the Second Ultimate Lucky Student." Togami narrowed his eyes slightly, however didn't comment further. The blonde then looked up at Sayaka once more.

"And you, if I recall, you're that B-list idol from that group, right? Sayaka Maizono, I believe."

"We're called Wasurenagusa (Forget-me-not)!" Sayaka pouted.

"And you are?" Byakuya turned to Komaru… who was drinking soda with a straw.

"I'm Makoto's little sister, Komaru. Reserve Course," she said. Byakuya pushed up his glasses as the Little Sister of Hope casually sipped her soda and lazily stared back.

"I'll remember that name properly. Especially after your display," the Heir said. "Now, out of my way, plebeians. I have better things to do than converse with people below me." He then took his leave while pushing past them without looking at anyone but a single glance to Makoto. Byakuya then turned his attention ahead of him and walked away towards Hope's Peak Academy.

Sayaka placed her hands on her hips and scowled in Byakuya's direction. She asked, "What was his problem? What a jerk!" The Idol turned to Makoto with a smile. "Sorry for making you look bad, Naegi."

"There was nothing to apologize for. To be fair, I'm a bit more concerned about you," Makoto said, his smile dropping a bit. "You should be more careful, given your reputation as the Ultimate Idol, Miss Maizono." Sayaka twitched a smile as that point was thrown out in the open. She then turned toward Makoto and laughed drily.

"Yeah, I shouldn't. My job is to give strength to others," she said. Makoto frowned as Sayaka's smile became downcast, her right hand rubbing her left biceps. However, she shook her expression away and replaced it with a bright smile. "No, it's nothing! I'm fine, honest."

"It's alright if you aren't." Before Makoto could say anything further, Sayaka placed her arms behind her back and tilted her head coyly, leaning closer towards Makoto.

"That aside, Naegi, are you really heading to Hope's Peak too?" Sayaka asked.

Makoto sighed before he nodded and replied, "Yes, I am. I received an invitation to attend as the Ultimate Lucky Student." He started walking down the sidewalk, gesturing for Sayaka to join them. As Komaru moved to his right-hand side, Sayaka side by side on his left.

"Really? How sweet! We're going to be classmates then!" Sayaka clasped her hands together with a bright smile before bringing a finger to her lower lip, looking up. "But it's kind of strange, you know? I never thought I'd really talk to you like this. throughout middle school, you never talked to me. In fact, you never even looked at me."

"It's because you were already famous by then. I couldn't just stand there staring at you…" Makoto's smile dropped as he paused and turned to the Ultimate Idol. "Hold on, how do you know I didn't look at you?"

"Because I looked at you all the time…"

Sayaka wore a flat frown, conveying no laughter as Makoto's eyes grew wide after that statement. Unbeknownst to the Ultimates, Komaru . exe was suffering a nosebleed and seemed to stop processing. For Makoto, he stared at the Idol for a moment as his hand clenched above his heart and cheeks lightly flushed red. After several beats…

"Huh…?" he said intelligently.

"I was always looking for an opportunity to talk to you," said Sayaka, smiling. The snow white skin of her cheeks were flushed an ever so light red.

"You… wanted to talk to me? But… Why me?" Makoto asked. Sayaka clenched her fist light by her chin and tilted her head away a bit.

As she walked ahead, the Idol asked, "Do you recall that enormous bird that got into the school pond during our first year in middle school?"

"Do you mean that crane?" Makoto asked. That's right! During their first year of junior high, a crane wandered into the school pond.

"Yeah, that's right! That's exactly what it was," said Sayaka, raising hand over her mouth. "The teacher didn't know what to do because it was so large. You guided it into the woodland behind the school. You aided it in finding its way out." Makoto tilted his head before cupping his cheek.

"Ms. Maizono, anyone in my place would have done it," Makoto explained. "They had me do it because I was already in charge of caring for the animals at school." Pfft! Komaru turned away and covered her mouth to hide her smile. Such humility was just like her Onii-chan; never accepting praise or reward for anything good does. Poor guy doesn't understand that it can easily come across as braggadocio.

As they all continued on their path to Hope's Peak Academy, Makoto pouted at Komaru, as if he could read her mind. Similarly, Sayaka giggled at the pouty young man and said, "I also remember that about you. Downplaying your compassion for others." However, as the Ultimate Lucky Student blanched, Sayaka looked down with furrowed eyebrows. "I should have said thank you then, but… is it okay if I do it now?"

Makoto turned his attention from Komaru to the Idol, raising his eyebrows furrowed with his little sister doing the same. What was she talking about? Thank him for what? She explained, "I'm that crane, you see. I want to return the favor. Here, let me make you a cloak…" The Naegi Siblings stared half-lidded at Sayaka with beads of sweat before she quickly stuck her tongue out. "Teehee. Just kidding!"

"Y-Yeah, I kinda figured…" Makoto giggled with his sister.

"Yet, to be honest, I was blown away…" said Sayaka. "That's why I've always wanted to speak with you, even if only once. I never imagined this would be how I got my chance…" Komaru grinned as she went backwards to face her brother. She placed her arms behind her back and leaned in close, dipping her head coyly.

"She's right, Onii-chan! Meeting on the way to the same high school sure makes for a nice dramatic reunion," said Komaru. Makoto giggled before full on laughing, soon joined by Komaru and Sayaka. Alas, as life, all good things must end. In the blink of an eye, Makoto and Komaru turned and glared down a street leading to another part of town.

"Is something wrong, you two?" Sayaka asked. The Naegi Siblings turned to each other and nodded. They then turned to the Ultimate idol and performed a keirei bow with an inclination of about 30° of the upper body. Then, they both looked her dead in the eyes.

"Apologies, Miss Maizono. However, some important business just popped up that we must attend to," said Makoto. The frown on Sayaka's turned skewed, but before she could question them, Makoto and Komaru turned and headed off to the southwest alley. The Ultimate Idol laid her fist on her chest as furrowed her raised eyebrows at the direction of the Naegi Sibling.

Hope's Peak City

.

Monaca Tōwa was born an unwanted child by her parents, the president of the Tōwa Group, and her mother, his lover out of wedlock. Her mother abandoned her and took her into the family, but Monaca was always unwanted and made Haiji feel sick. She pretended to be paraplegic and was treated with kindness, even though she was disliked in the family. Monaca was part of the "trouble-makers' class" along with Nagisa Shingetsu, Masaru Daimon, Jatarō Kemuri, and Kotoko Utsugi. She planned a group suicide, but never planned to commit it herself.

So why, pray tell, did it seem like the being she assumed wanted her soul was conspiring against her the most. Dark monsters with humanoid bodies encircled the Warriors of Hope. They had round, spherical heads and round, bright yellow eyes. Each of their two long, twisted antennas twitched as three claws jerked. Except for their eyes, the creatures' bodies were entirely black.

They twitched and jerked as they stared at the quivering children with their lifeless, empty eyes.

Nagisa stood in front of Monaca with his arms spread out. The blue-haired boy stuttered, "D-Don't move, you guys. M-Maybe they'll just go away if we stay still…" The living Shadows leapt at the poor boy whose blue eyes grew as wide as that of a frightened kitten.

"Nagisa…!" Monaca cried out, but the sound of her angelic voice didn't reach the Li'l Ultimate Social Studies. Not this time, as the icy claws of the Shadow reached out to Nagisa's chest. For a split second, the world looked to be progressively devoured by Darkness until a light twinkled into existence. It began little but quickly grew to fill Nagisa's vision with tremendous brilliance. The Li'l Ultimate Social Studies opened his eyes and looked at an older… boy…? who slashed the Shadow in half with ease.

What the adolescent was using was the most bizarre and ludicrous weapon they he had ever seen. One that defied cutting logic. A key-shaped weapon composed of a Fraxinus tree as the blade's shaft and small branch full of sakura flowers for its teeth. The older Boy-Girl glared at the Shadows and said, "Enough."

"Woah…! I dunno who that is, but they're so cool!" Masaru cheered, his eyes sparkling. Suddenly, in the corner of his eye, Nagisa saw a girl jump over Kotoko and crush another Shadow with her own "key" designed in Monochrome checkered patterns. The teenage girl took a protective battle stance over the Li'l Ultimate Drama.

"Stupid Heartless… Back off the kids…" she hissed.

"Another one! And they're both totally adorbs, too!" Kotoko's eyes sparkled. The girly boy gasped as the Shadows moved together, soon joined by thousands more that emerged from the ground.

"Kids, you all need to get out of here and find safety. It's about to get ugly," the older boy said as calmly as he could. Sure enough, the Heartless erupted from the earth as a Demon Tide - a mass wavelike formation of Shadows swirling in a wicked dance on par with the mythic Wild Hunt.

"U-Ugly… r-really ugly…" said the masked boy, Jatarō. Monaca's jaw had dropped, her eyes painfully wide and twitching wildly. This was all illogical, even impossible, like something from the pages of a fairy tale. One of the darker ones anyway as it was more of a waking nightmare than the cheesy, dreamy fairy tales Monaca heard of. But seeing these Shadows appear and swarm the streets of their home, the girl couldn't find any word.

The Li'l Ultimate Homeroom gulped down hard before turning to her classmates. She said, "Well, we can't just stay here and let this thing harm us, am I right? Let's get to safety, everyone!" The Warriors of Hope ran off to the First District without another thought in their heads. Meanwhile, Makoto and Komaru dashed towards the Demon Tide with Elpis Lux and Shinjitsu Key respectively in hand.

Storyteller: 🙋 Storyteller, here!

Pupla: And my name is Pupla!

Storyteller: So, Pupla! How much have you learned about Kingdom Hearts now since I first mentioned it to you?

Pupla: 😅 Well… Darkness sure exists…

(Pause for several beats.)

Storyteller: 𓁹_𓁹 Just shooting in the dark there, huh? But fun facts about darkness! Though darkness is mainly employed by villains and is thought to be pure evil, it is not wholly malicious. Several heroes use the darkness to some extent, ranging from accessing the Corridors of Darkness to unleashing dark energy blasts. Even Disney's patron saint of heroes, Mickey Mouse, uses the Kingdom Key D, which originates in the Realm of Darkness. Spirit Dream Eaters love Sora and Riku despite their being embodiments of darkness.

Pupla: Well, canon has yet to show us a good user of darkness. Aside from the heroes, that is.

Storyteller: Hold on, now! What about Halloween Town? One theme of Halloween is darkness, isn't it? So, Jack Skellington should be able to use darkness just like Oogie Boogie, right?

Pupla: I mean, in theory, I guess, but I don't remember him ever using it, which is a bit of a shame. Plus, is it really darkness and not a variant? Like Shadow or Shade?

Storyteller: (sigh) Fair enough… Despite all beliefs, they are different things…

Storyteller: 😈 You'd think with this title, I'd be introducing RWBY. But, mmm, nope!

Pupla: 😓 Oh boy, this is gonna be a wild one. I mean, of course, the theme fits perfectly, but considering the franchise's reputation nowadays… You see what I mean?
