Hello.

I originally wrote this fanfiction in 2016. I recently found some old pages from it scribbled in a notebook somewhere and remembered that I really enjoyed the concept, so I've decided to rewrite it. If you get a notification that this fic updated after 8 years, my God, thank you for sticking around!

I hope you all enjoy the new version. Thanks for reading!

Sweat ran down his forehead, running into his eyes and blurring his vision. But that was okay, he didn't need to see for much longer. He was almost to the end of the dock. He was almost free from the monsters that chased after him. The black lake stretched out before him in nearly every direction, the full moon lighting his path down the wooden planks. He glanced over his shoulder. They had jumped the wire fence; they were twenty feet behind and gaining ground fast.

"Stop!"

He didn't answer. His breath came in ragged gasps as he sprinted ever closer to the edge of the dock. He didn't dare look over his shoulder again. He could hear them scrambling down the bank behind him, tripping over stones and bushes. The water rocked against the pilings supporting the dock.

He managed a small, crooked grin despite the shrieking panic slowly filling his head. A giddy laugh clawed its way out of his throat. Soon he would be free from those disgusting villains. Their voices barked his name, demanding that he stop running. Absolutely not.

His throat was raw from sucking down lungfuls of cold night air; the exertion from running was catching up with him. He paused at the edge of the dock for only a moment, cast a wild glance back at his tormentors, and dove into the water. The immediate icy shock nearly made him inhale a gallon of water instead of air. Flailing, he found his way to the surface and turned back to look at the dock. The goons tailing him stopped at the edge, completely flabbergasted.

"Koppel!" the tall one cried, hunched over with his hands on his knees, winded. "Damn it…Get back here! We're gonna be in so much trouble…"

The short one panted, swiping hair out of his face. "Do-...Do we have a boat? We could-"

"We don't have a boat! You can swim, right? Go out there!"

"What do you mean we don't have a boat?! We're right on a lake!"

He flashed them a middle finger. His heart pounded like a drum in his ears as he focused all his energy and adrenaline on swimming. He knew he was too far out now for them to retrieve him. He could still faintly hear them bickering, but nothing they said mattered now. It was late enough at night that they'd have to send for a boat in the morning, or risk contacting the police. The big boss hated when police got involved. By the time the sun rose, he'd surely be miles away from there.

That, or he'd be dead.

Either way, he had escaped.
