Elena woke up a few hours later in her room in Elijah's house. Elijah had suggested that she rest for a while and try to calm down, and she'd taken his advice. She fell asleep not long after laying down.

Elena sat up on her bed and grabbed her phone, which was sitting on the nightstand next to her. She saw that she had about a dozen missed calls a piece from Stefan and Bonnie. She also had one from Caroline. She put it back on the table. She had no intention of talking to Stefan or Bonnie right now. She'd call Caroline back later to let her know she was okay.

Elena got up and headed out of the room. She went downstairs to the living room and found Elijah sitting in a chair with a large, old looking book in hands. He appeared to be marking up the pages.

"Hi," Elijah said when he saw Elena. He placed the book he was holding on the table in front of him. "Are you feeling any better?"

"Yeah, a little. I'm still scared though," Elena said.

"I know the manifestation of your magic can be frightening, but there isn't really anything to be afraid of. It will be alright," Elijah assured her.

"Did you talk to Jenna?" Elena asked.

"I did. I told her I would be keeping you with me tonight, and she also agreed to let Jeremy spend the night. I'll pick him up right before dinnertime," Elijah told her.

Elena nodded before walking over and taking a seat on the couch. "What did you tell her?"

"That you had an anxiety attack due to how your friends have been behaving," Elijah said. He didn't like lying to Jenna. A part of him would actually like to tell her the truth. She deserved to know the truth, as she was Elena's family, but Elijah couldn't risk that. There was no telling how she would react. For all he knew, she would take the news of what Elena was badly, and Elijah would not put Elena through that right now. Perhaps in the future, he could consider it, but what was best for his daughter had to come first. Elena could not take any more possible rejection. Besides, he had the feeling what he told Jenna wasn't a complete lie. "There's some truth to that, isn't there?"

Elena reluctantly nodded before pointing to the book Elijah was looking at when she came in, desperate to change the subject. "What's that?"

"We'll discuss that soon. Right now, we need to discuss what happened today and why," Elijah said. He easily saw through his daughter's attempt to change the subject, and he wasn't having it.

"I told you what happened. I got mad. My magic must have become unblocked," Elena said.

"Yes, but I would like you to tell me why you got so angry. I can guess, but I'd still like you to tell me," Elijah said.

Elena sighed. "I was mad at Bonnie and Stefan. They don't want me to living with you. They've been trying to plot ways to keep you away from me. They don't listen when I tell them that that's not what I want. Bonnie said that they were doing what was best for me, as if somehow, they knew better than me! That's what made me so angry!"

Elijah looked over to see a vase on the fireplace start to shake. "Take a few deep breaths." He wasn't concerned about anything breaking, but he wanted to take the time now to help Elena control her magic.

Elena did as her father asked, and her emotions soon returned to normal. "Sorry."

"You have nothing to apologize for. You have every right to be angry. Your friends have not treated you with the respect you deserve. How long has this been going on?" Elijah asked.

"Since they found out about you. It's gotten worse in the last couple of weeks, partially because I'm getting closer to moving in with you, and partially because you've limited my time with them," Elena told him.

"Parents are meant to set guidelines. Your friends should understand that," Elijah said. He found it hard to believe that those children didn't follow any rules, with the exception of Stefan, of course. Then again, lack of structure might have something to do with Elena's friend, Bonnie, thinking it was acceptable to interfere with his relationship with his daughter.

"Yeah, I know. They don't accept you as my father. It's because you're a vampire. Bonnie hates vampires. She's better with Stefan, but even him, I think she only tolerates sometimes. It has a lot to do with how her grandmother died," Elena explained.

Elijah sighed. That only troubled him further. He had a feeling that Bonnie's issue with him was that he was a vampire. It was an issue many witches had, and while he didn't care what witches thought of his kind, it was a problem when his daughter was friends with one of them. How was his daughter supposed to retain any sort of self-esteem when her own friend believed that her kind was evil? How could he allow her to be exposed to that? "I can't let this continue, Elena. I can't let you stress yourself out like this. I can't allow the people your so-called friends to treat you this way. I will not allow it."

"You're going to make me break up with Stefan, aren't you?" Elena asked.

Elijah sighed. He wanted to. Stefan had clearly not heeded his warning, but he was willing to give it one more chance. "No, not yet, but I am going to put further restrictions on the relationship. You're only to see Stefan here when I'm home, and this is his last chance. I want you to understand that I am not doing this to punish you. I am doing this because this boy does not seem to know how to act when he is left unsupervised. I will not have him treating you this way and causing you stress. Should he prove himself trustworthy, we can reevaluate, but for now, this is the way it has to be."

Elena nodded that she understood. She should probably be more upset by it, but she wasn't. Maybe this would finally get Stefan to back off and see that Elijah was serious. Maybe if he spent more time around Elijah, he'd actually see that he was wrong about him.

"Your friend, Bonnie is actually the bigger problem. She's putting her issues onto you. I can't have that. I would like you to stay away from her for a while," Elijah said.

"But she's one of my best friends," Elena protested. She was mad at Bonnie right now, but she didn't want to lose their friendship.

"Elena, she has a bias against vampires. You are a vampire, even if not a typical one. I won't have you exposed to that. I won't have her forcing her opinions onto you. Now, you've said that it has to do with her grandmother's death. Hopefully, it's that simple. Hopefully, she can work through her issues and be the friend you deserve. If that happens, I'm more than willing to revisit this, but until then, it's my job to protect you," Elijah said firmly.

"I don't have a choice, do I?" Elena asked sadly.

"No, sweetheart. I'm sorry. I know this is hurting you. I'm sorry for that, but I've been left with no other choice," Elijah said.

Elena nodded. She was upset by it, but maybe she did need to take a break from Bonnie for now. She loved her friend, but she kept feeling like she had to choose between her friend and her father. She also often felt like she was being judged for what she was born as. "I can still talk to Caroline, right?"

"Was that the blond vampire I saw today?"

Elena nodded. "She's been a good friend. She's been really supportive."

"Then of course, you can. I don't want to take your friends from you. I just want you to have friends that treat you the way you deserve," Elijah told her.

Elena sighed in relief. "So, what do I do about my magic showing up? I don't want to risk losing control again."

"I'll be honest with you. You probably will lose control again. It's something you have to work at to gain control. However, there are techniques to controlling your emotions that should help you, so that hopefully, it won't happen in public too often. My mother used to have my siblings do breathing exercises. There is also meditation. We'll work on some of that tonight. If you're still not comfortable, I'll keep you home again tomorrow, but you will have to go back to school soon."

"Okay. Elijah, were you a witch before you turned?" Elena asked curiously.

"No, but two of my siblings were, and magic was practiced daily in our home," Elijah said before picking up the book he'd set on the table. "You wanted to know about this. This was my mother's grimoire. It contains spells and potions that she created. I'm going to give this to you, but there will be some ground rules."

"Okay," Elena said as she eyed the book eagerly. She really wanted to get a look at it. Suddenly, the prospect of magic got exciting, though it was still frightening too.

"I've marked pages with the spells you are allowed to try with my supervision. If I have not marked it, you will not even think of attempting it, is that clear?" Elijah asked. That was how his siblings were taught as well. His mother was very careful on how much Finn and Kol learned when they started out. Magic was dangerous, especially when too much was attempted too soon.

"Yes."

"As you get more experienced, I will mark up more pages. There are some spells that you will never try. My mother dabbled with some dangerous things, and I don't want you going down that road. Most of those spells, I'm not able to see. You are, but you will not use them," Elijah said firmly. He'd honestly thought very hard about even allowing her to have his mother's grimoire because of how dangerous some of the spells were, but he trusted Elena to obey him and use magic responsibly.

"How come you can't see them?" Elena asked curiously.

"Well, as I said, my mother dabbled in dangerous magic. She wanted to make sure that if her grimoire got into the wrong hands, no witch outside her bloodline would be able use those spells and rituals. I was not a witch, which is why you will be able to see them but I can't," Elijah explained.

"Can I still look at all the other spells?" she asked.

"Yes. I think it's important that you learn about them, but you will stick to my instructions. If I find out that you tried a spell without my permission, there will be severe consequences," Elijah warned.

Elena nodded. "I understand. Can I see?"

Elijah handed her the book. "I don't want you trying anything today. It's still too soon, but you can look at it."

Elena eagerly took the book and started exploring it.
