Paper Planes:
"Eraserhead, Thirteen." A low, smooth baritone accompanies an ever increasing dark fog, and ominous miasma. A pair of glowing, yellow eyes in a pair of darkness; a darkness full of things. Hungry, nasty things with no real shape or form. The villains are plentiful and intense, and look at them with malicious intent. "According to the teacher's schedule we received yesterday, All Might was supposed to be here. And yet..."
"Where is he...?" A villain speaks with a voice drier than even the hottest deserts; colder than the arctic during a winter solstice. " We went through all this trouble and rustled up so many of us to bring along..." The villain's voice drags like chains over gravel. "You can't tell me All Might, the Symbol of Peace, isn't here." The man's head snaps around, making unnaturally quick and awkward movements, "I wonder if he'll show up if we kill some kids?"
"Sensei! What about the intruder alarm sensors?"
Thirteen's eyes widened on her mask, "Of course we have some set up, but...!"
Todoroki, true to one half of his quirk, remained cool. "Are they only here or also at the main building?" He thought aloud, not expecting nor getting a response. He took several steps forward, giving the plaza a sweeping glance. "Either way, if the sensors aren't working, it has to be one of their quirks at play here. This place is far from campus," He continues on, but his voice takes on a sharp edge. "And they picked a time where there'd be fewer people here. So maybe, they're not as dumb as they seem. They must have an objective, because this is a very well-coordinated sneak attack."
Aizawa takes the boy's words into consideration and swears under his breath, "Thirteen, evacuate the students! And try calling the school. The villains know how to get around the sensors! There's a chance there's an electrowave guy jamming everything. Kaminari!" The boy visibly flinches at his name, "Try using your quirk to contact the school too!" Aizawa takes a step forward, adjusts his goggles and prepares to leap before someone calls out to him.
"Sensei! Are you gonna fight them all?! Let me help!" Izuku shouts, his voice echoing in a strange way. "I can fly above you and be an extra set of eyes and -"
"Absolutely not, Midoriya. I'm not risking a student's life for a little support." Aizawa barks.
"But - but," Something courses under Izuku's veins, something strong, righteous. "Even if you suppress all of their quirks, there's so many of them! Your style is to capture after erasing their quirks, not -"
"Midoriya," Aizawa says, a bit softer but no less stern. "No good hero is a one trick pony. Thirteen, I'm counting on you!" With that, the man takes a leap of faith into the fray, uncoiling his scarf mid-fall and lashing out at anyone who dares to oppose him.
The students watch in awe. Aizawa is nothing short of a nightmare for his enemies, erasing quirks, constricting his scarf around villains and defeating them in such a fluid motion, that it was almost enough to fill Izuku with hope.
Almost.
"He can't do that forever, Midoriya." He hears a collection of voices echo within One For All, and then a feeling. It's nearly all-encompassing and impossible to ignore, and such a loud, resounding call that Izuku feels himself hovering. It's a call he knows well; a call to action. He floats a bit higher, ignorant to the outside world. One For All is the only thing he can make out through-out the turbulence in his soul.
And then, his vision is overtaken by deep, dark purples and blacks and the scent of aged wine and dust.
"I'm afraid that leaving isn't an option," the mist becomes dark and wider with puffier edges like an inverted cloud, "Greetings," it says, feigning gentle politeness, "We are the League of Villains, please forgive our audacity, but we've come here to UA High-School, this bastion of heroism to end the life of All Might, the Symbol of Peace," he started to take a more vaguely humanoid outline before continuing on. "With All Might absent, my role remains unchanged." More and more mist begins to spread until it surrounds them; it's all Izuku can see, and the scent of a wind-swept ozone assaults his nostrils.
Kacchan and Kirishima leap forward before anyone else.
An explosion and a hardened slash intercept the mist at its core, momentarily stopping the spread.
"Bet you didn't think we'd be able to do you in before you got the chance!" Kirishima says, feigning confidence. Izuku can see it on his face, his furrowed brows and the beads of sweat racing down his face. Kacchan is as steady as a rock, snarling and sneering.
"That was quite perilous," the mist reforms once again, taking on an even sharper form until a metal bracer with a white shirt and tie can be seen through it, "To be expected, of course. You are children, but you are also the hero world's golden eggs. It's all for nought, I'm afraid."
The mist starts to expand again, fast this time. Thicker.
Thirteen futility reaches her hand out to the students, "It's no use! Run!"
The fog engulfs them, "Begone. Writhe in torment until your last breath."
When the fog clears, Izuku realizes rather quickly that he's falling. He's above a pool of water and descending rapidly, but thankfully catches himself several meters up before he can hit the surface. A shout from above drags his attention skyward and his eyes go wide when he sees two other falling bodies.
Izuku doesn't hesitate. The water's surface reflects his intent clear as day, and ripples as he takes off. He's careful to move fast, but not too fast, lest he turn the person he was trying to rescue into a cloud. The first person he grabs is Tsuyu, who shoots her tongue out when she sees him glide toward her. It feels weird to have her appendage wrapped around his relatively thin flight suit, but he shakes off the discomfort to pull her closer to him.
"Thank you, kero." She says, positioning herself to be more comfortable in Izuku's arms. "There's one more."
Izuku knows and shifts the girl to his back, swooping down much lower and faster, but not fast enough. Mineta hits the water with a loud splash and villains immediately surround him from all sides like a group of hungry piranhas. The boy screams and flails around, losing his battle with the water as the villains get closer.
"Hold on tight," Izuku says before releasing his quirk. Gravity begins to take hold and his body, along with Tsuyu's extra weight, make them fall faster until, at the last second, Izuku activates Float to gain a burst of speed, hitting the water like an olympic diver. Flying underwater is different than he expected; more drag, less visibly and infinitely more wet, but he can maneuver just as easily with Tsuyu smaller form keeping him level. He needn't tell her anything, instead he flies close enough to Mineta she could snatch him up with a single extension of her tongue. She pulls him in and Mineta clings to Izuku like a second skin, and holds even tighter when Izuku flies upwards and out of the water. He gasps for air upon surfacing. "Are you two alright? Mineta? Asui?"
"Call me Tsu," the girl says flatly, "Yes, I am fine. We're in a bit of a pickle though."
Mineta sputters out something that sounds like a confirmation, but it's hard to make out over the boy's incessant yelling about heights.
"There's a ship over there, Midoriya. We should land."
Izuku does, and the second his feet hit the wooden deck, it's his mind that takes off. "They knew our schedules somehow... The simplest explanation is that they were the cause of the media rush the other day." Izuku thinks aloud. "It's like Todoroki-san said, they were waiting for this chance and they were well prepared."
"But - but, there's no way they'll be able to kill All Might!" Mineta frantically shouts, "Once All Might arrives, they'll be sorry!"
"Mineta... they must've figured out a way to kill him." Asui says bluntly, "Otherwise, it'd be absurd to come all this way just to get flattened. And it's not exactly beneath villains to do that," she continues. "Will we really be able to hold out until All Might arrives? If he does come... will he be alright?"
Tsuyu's words, whether intention or not, frighten Mineta to his very core. So much so that the boy starts to shake.
"Come back here, brats! I'll kill you!" A villain with a wide mouth and shark-like face breaks the water's surfaces and sneers at them.
One For All bubbles within his soul, tempering the flames of anxiety that threatened to burn him from the inside. Tsuyu was right, he realized. Be it an act of confidence or stupidity, the villains seemed sure that they'd kill All Might with whatever they had planned. He had many questions, and even less answers, but he couldn't spend too much time on it, not now. One For All spurred him on, "You have to soar. You have to fight."
And he will, and he did.
"Hmm, I can't contact Aizawa or Thirteen..." All Might hums in discontent. "...whatever reason why, I suppose Gran was right. I should relinquish my post as a teacher after work hours are done. I did a very foolish thing.
He continues from the nurse's office to the teacher's lounge and shakes his head, "I'll go when school's ending, but what should I tell them? I've got about ten minutes left..." He buffs up and shakes the thoughts away. "I'll go anyway!"
"Hold your horses!" A voice squeaks.
"Mr. Principal!"
"Yes, it's me! The guy you can't make out if he's a mouse, a bear or a dog. Oh, don't give me that look, these ears aren't for show, All Might!"
The hero crouches down, "I see your fur is nice and neat today!"
Nezu chuckles at the flattery, "It's the keratin, humans just can't achieve this level of luster! Flattery aside," Nezu pulls out a tablet from God knows where and shows All Might the screen. All Might internally winces. It's a headline from this morning, detailing his exploits. "Even after your arrival, there are still droves of evil-doers in this town, but the fact that you push off reflexively to dive head first into danger is so like you! You really haven't changed at all from the old days."
All Might sighs, "Unfortunately, it would seem not."
Nezu continues on in his lecture unimpeded, but something strange happens to All Might the moment he chooses to deflate. There, in that fraction of a second, One For All shouts at him in a way it hasn't done before.
Danger.
It forces a chill down his spine and puts his head on a swivel. "Mr. Principal..." Toshinori lightly interjects. "How secure is U.A.? For curiosity's sake."
"Very!" Nezu said without missing a beat. "I spared no expense when designing the security system. It would be easier to rob the National Bank of Japan than it would to get into U.A. Pray tell, why do you ask?"
Toshinori looks down at his hand and calls forth his quirk, looking for another sign of the strange behavior. He gets no response.
"A bad feeling, I suppose."
"Are you sure it isn't tied to you pushing your limits?" Nezu points out jovially. "After all, you are immensely low on time, and had you not been an instructor, you would've long since rested."
Toshinori looks down, thoughtful, "I suppose."
Iida recovered first. In an instant, his classmates were gone, scattered like leaves in the wind. "Wh - Where is everyone!? Can we confirm their locations!?" He clenched his fist to help ease his trembling.
"They're scattered around, but I can confirm they're all still here." Shoji, having calmed down the most, said while turning his extra extremities to ears.
"Physical attacks are no good," Sero called out. "This guy's quirk is really tough."
"Iida!" Thirteen's entire upper body snapped to him. "Your job is to run back to the school and report what's happening." Iida looked mortified at the implication. "The alarms haven't sounded and the phones aren't working. The alarm uses infrared tech and the fact that it hasn't activated even though Senpai - that Eraserhead is down there nullifying their quirks means that whoever is interfering with the system has hidden themselves as well. That being said, going back is the best option since you're the fastest!"
"But - but I can't just abandon my class!"
Sato just shook his head and shoved Iida. "She said go! Out the emergency exit!"
"Please use your quirk to save us all." Thirteen said while turning her back to him and staring down Kurogiri.
"Yeah!" Uraraka, even in such a situation, put on a strong face, even if Iida knew it was a facade. "We can provide all the support you need! And we will!"
Iida looked positively stressed out.
"I may or may not be able to stop him," Kurogiri's voice felt a few octaves lower and any hint of cordial conversation had long since left, "But still, I'm surprised there are still simpletons among us who would spout off their plans in the presence of an enemy!"
Thirteen flips the caps from her gloves and points at the mist creature, "Isn't it obvious? We let you hear us because it's not a problem if you know!"
"This is already takin' too long, no one mentioned anything about a flier." The villain - tall, well-built man wearing a black, full body wetsuit with shoulder pads - says while raising his arm. "Whatever, at least now I can have a bit more fun." His face, pale and noseless with grooves under each sunken eye, makes his sinister smile seem way more gaunt and unsettling. It makes Izuku want to fly away, even if One For All is tugging his soul in the other direction.
The villain floats on the water until half of his body is breaking the surface. Water runs up and down each of his arms, moving like an octopus' tentacles before the man's whips a blade of water towards the boat.
Izuku moves quicker than the attack, bursting into Tsuyu's side and tackling her out of the way of an attack that left a large, deep cut on the ship's fiberglass hull. Mineta screams.
"Hold on!"
Izuku pushes off of the deck with Mineta and Tsuyu clinging to either side of him and takes to the skies. He doesn't have a plan, not really, but he knows that they need to escape this situation as soon as possible.
"Not today, runt!" The villain's body becomes more encompassed with water until the Flood Zone's pool is half full, and the excess water molded itself around the man, making a titan that was nearly as tall as Izuku's cruising altitude. "In the water, I'm unbeatable!"
Izuku's eyes go wide. A water tentacle slowly raises and swipes at him, but despite the extra weight slowing him down, Izuku's training with Gran has made his ability to turn on a dime something to be feared. He shifted a full ninety degrees, watching in awe as the tidal wave slammed into the boat and turned it into a pile of wood and shrapnel. The force of the wave carries on long after the attack ends and crashes into the plaza like a tsunami. Many villains are taken down and swept away and Aizawa, and his quick thinking, uses his scarf to anchor himself to the fountain near the middle of the USJ.
"What an insane power...!"
"What'll we do, Midoriya?"
"We're gonna die!"
"Just hold onto me! Water is too slow!"
The villain has the gall to laugh, "We'll fuckin' see about that, brat!"
Izuku flies in a zig-zag pattern and then begins to revolve around the beast like a moon caught in its planet's gravity. The villain takes this as a challenge, lashing out with more tendrils of water in wide, sweeping attacks. A few get close, and Izuku is forced to quickly change direction when a small, faster jet of water clips his arm and throws him off course.
He tumbles and regains himself, but in the brief moment, the villain had accumulated more water and created an attack that was wider than anything he'd done before. It resembled an attack one would see from Mt. Lady and Izuku gasped. He swiftly flies downwards, at an angle and hovers near the end of the pool, muttering rapidly to himself as he does. Mineta clings to him even tighter.
"What the hell are you doing, Midoriya!? MOVE!"
"DIE!"
The tidal wave comes down with a loud and heavy boom, thousands of gallons of water falling at once. Izuku blinks and calls upon One For All in his time of need. The water seems so slow when he opens his eyes. In an instant, he flies upwards and into the attack, keeping his body as straight as a bullet. "Sensei!"
"A little head's up would've been nice, Midoriya!" Aizawa shouts back, seeing a second, larger tsunami crash into the plaza. Villains are being swept away by the currents and ragdolled all around. Those heavy enough to withstand the force of the waves as assaulted by the various pieces of wood and concrete that moved with the flow.
"Damn it, Hanzo!"
"Who's side are you on!?"
The main villain and his partner, the beast with black skin and an exposed brain, are among those that are nearly swept up in the current. The beast holds its master above its head and remains unmoving.
The villain, Hanzo, pays them no mind. "Learn to fuckin' swim! Don't blame me!"
Izuku, now so, so very high above it all, lets his quirk go for a second time. And then it sparks. One For All sparks.
Tsuyu feels it when lightning courses jump from Midoriya's body onto her's. The fine hairs on her arms, neck and spine all stand up. It feels like if she breathes, vapor should appear from her breath. Light the bracing of something frigid in her lungs, so cold. Too cold.
She can hear a low, subsonic buzzing, like static, getting louder and louder, until the sound itself is almost tangible. A strong vibration across her skin and in her ears and down to her very bones. She feels as though she should be afraid, but she isn't. The opposite. She feels oddly peaceful, like being in the eye of the storm. She leans into the electricity, fascinated by it.
She didn't even notice when Midoriya picked up speed.
Izuku's eyes are locked on his target. Hanzo sees him coming and sinks himself within his water, but it's too late. With everything moving so slowly, Izuku was positive that the villain couldn't have hidden even in the ocean. He shoots across the skies like a meteor, lightning masquerading in human form.
"If you're gonna copy my technique, you should at least use the name." Nana teases. "It's called..."
"Jet Black Hawk!"
If there's an impact, Tsuyu doesn't feel it, having been too entranced by the lightning. She recalls a scream, a splash of cool water and then nothing and when she blinks and the lightning dies down, the liquid kaiju is falling like an indoor rain. The villain who controlled it is firmly planted somewhere across the USJ if the long, destroyed line is to any indication.
"...kero."
Midoriya lands in a roll on the floor, trying his hardest to shield her and Mineta from the brunt of the impact. To his credit, she barely feels a thing, even if Mineta can't say the same.
"Damn it, Midoriya!" Mineta cries out. "Why do you have to be so cool!?"
"I agree."
Izuku lays on his back and coughs up a bit of water, a small grin on his face, "Heh, thanks."
"Your leg, man!"
Pain shoots up his body the second the words process. He was hesitant to look down, but he could feel the state of his leg. Walking was likely out of the question but, "It's fine," he says, in a voice that's not totally his, "I can fly."
"Are you sure?"
"Ye - yeah. Help me up, we have to decide on what to do next. We should call for help now that the plaza is clear," Izuku says through gritted teeth. His leg is still partially hidden behind his pants, but he can see large, red splotches through the fabric.
"Your quick thinking means that Aizawa-sensei has far less villains to deal with. Most of them washed away, kero."
"That's good. I'm not saying we jump into the fray but..." Izuku hobbles and tries to put as little weight as possible on both his leg and Tsuyu. "Let's see if there's anything we can do for Sensei."
"Nomu. You can put me down now," Shigaraki says, annoyed. "I hate water levels."
Aizawa finally comes from his perch atop the fountain, refreshed and renewed. Midoriya, the crafty kid, really relieved a ton of stress from his shoulders and he's immensely thankful for that. He'll be giving the kid an earful when this is over, make no mistake, but it'll only be a logical ruse. After all, he had to admit, he was starting to struggle.
"Well, this is annoying. I was hoping to count down the seconds until you couldn't use your quirk anymore, but I guess someone forgot to turn the water off." Shigaraki starts to scratch the back of his neck, keeping his eyes on the pro before him. He could feel his quirk fading, and the itchiness fading with it. "I hate it when heroes live up to the hype."
"So, you're the boss here?" Aizawa asks, flicking out his scarf and huffing when it's easily caught. He yanks it back, moving forward as he does and meets the villain head-on. He's too slow to react to an elbow that lands in his stomach.
Or so Aizawa thinks.
His elbow was caught in the villain's palm as he stared vacantly at him from behind his hand-mask. "As if I'd be that easy, Eraserhead."
Aizawa winds back and uses his free hand to land a strong, satisfying punch across the villain's cheek. He reels but quickly regains his composure, and then moves like a blur, closing the distance between them both far faster than Aizawa figured he should've. It's his turn to block an attack from the man, an opened palm strike aimed at his face. Aizawa moves his head from the center-line, crouching and springing up like a boxer and lands two strong hooks to Shigaraki's ribs and face. The villain reels again. "You really are too cool, Eraserhead..." The villain says again. "But unfortunately, I'm not the main boss here."
The last thing Aizawa sees before he feels a world of pain is a wall of black and the scent of decay.
A/N: Hey, I'm back with the milk. Oops, forgot the eggs. I'll be back.
