"What the hell?" She exclaimed as her soul prepared to leave her body. She helped, well, herself, up. But backed into a defensive position. She's not sure what to expect next but she's not taking any chances.
"Missed my out. Sorry. Wait- oh no." Deep purple eyes looked into each other. Bewilderment flashed on the younger ones, meanwhile deep thought mirrored on the oldest. The older woman reached for her comm, or what a modernized version of it was. She moved things around and pressed something.
"What do you mean by oh no?" Raven asked as the oldest looked around the place as if it were her own. Maybe it was. She went over to her bookcase and began searching for something.
"Huh. Overshoot over…how old are you?" The oldest turned to look at her, measuring her age.
"..almost nineteen." She replied dryly. The other woman turned again to look over her books. Could she be searching for-?
"Over fifteen years, great. I need your help. Can you find me our book? The one in ancient language with the runes." Raven felt uneasy by the request. No matter how much she looked like an aged version of her, she didn't know if she was her. She was told to guard that book with her life if necessary. If it fell into the wrong hands, all literal hell could break loose. Maybe she could deflect it and gain time to think of something that could prove that.
"I have a lot of books in ancient tongues, do you mind specifying?" Raven asked, trying to sound casual. The older woman sighed and put her hand on her waist.
"You know the one. I'm you. Stop stalling. The sooner I get out of here, the better for both of us. Or you. I don't even know." She tried to move over to her bed, where it was rightfully hidden. She could be her, no one else knew about the place where she kept it.
"Hm." She looked at the oldest with a skeptical face and put herself between her and the book.
"Right, you are distrustful. And within reason, to be honest. Ask away. I will answer what I can, to hopefully, not destroy the space-time continuum. Meanwhile, get me that damn book, I promise to give it back." The older woman gave up quite easily and backed down into her reading chair. With the moon's light illuminating her face Raven could see a little of the struggles of time. Some wrinkles, but not a surprising amount. She looks exhausted.
"So you say. Who are you?" Raven couldn't help to feel compelled by herself, but something didn't feel quite right in her gut. Something painful began building.
"I think that is obvious. You, probably. I'm close to being thirty-five next month." Her older self, adjusted her position on the chair, trying to look as non-threatening as possible.
"What were you sending just now?" She stopped and fixated on her. She had changed her custom, from what it looked like it. She was in full tactical gear. The pain continued to increase. Nothing unbearable, but now noticeable.
"I sent a retrieval signal, coordinates of sorts. So they can come and get me." She grunted and tried moving around the chair to find a comfortable position. It wasn't an uncomfortable chair. Could she have been feeling the same pain as her?
"Who are they?" Raven asked a little more forceful than necessary.
"The Titans. Our family?" The older woman answered sarcastically.
"Does that thing work for time traveling?"
"No idea. This is the first time something like this ever happened." She sounded truthful. Now to the next question. Almost no one except Titans knew about a similar experience, the mishap with Warp.
"Is this a Warp plot?" The woman didn't even bat an eye, as she was expecting the question.
"Not at all. Purely us, now move for Azar's sake." The woman exclaimed and put her hand on her stomach, exactly where her pain was radiating. Was she mirroring her?
"Oh?" She asked feigning normalcy when her head began pounding.
"Not an actual expression on Azarath." Her older self bent over and rubbed her eyes forcefully. She looked close to fainting. She was no better; the pain became stronger with each second. Something was definitely wrong.
"Wordplay? Me?" She made it to her bed and dropped to her knees to search for the book. All she could do was move slowly, breathe shallowly, and resist the pain.
"No one knows it isn't real. Well, except- nope can't tell you." The older Raven slid back into the chair and began breathing through her mouth. Everything was happening exceedingly fast, and she was feeling incredibly slow.
"'Nope', what happened to our lexicon?" She got to her feet and walked up to her. She passed the book to her. She moved her head from side to side and eyed the book. After some tense pain-filled minutes, she looked up.
"What?" Raven muttered, her voice as monotone as she could, but her face surely gave her away.
"Let's try this. I'm going to need you." She said as she moved her hands slowly. The pain went away as if it was never there. Maybe they were moving in the right direction.
"A dimension spell. Are you sure this will work?" Raven moved closer to the page, one that was more worn down than any other. One of her most used spells.
"Not at all, but technically time is the fourth dimension. That is how I got here, but I was aiming to go to last year, as a test." The other Raven stated matter of factly.
"Can we even do that? Move through time with this?"
"I mean, I am positive, I'm here; I just added this tiny variation to the focus, here." She flicked the pages to the end, a part she hadn't been able to decipher yet.
"How did you decipher this?" Raven's eyes read through the unknown characters.
"I had help." Her older self confessed.
"Where? Who?"
"You will get there, all in due time. If I recall correctly, you already know them. We went on a truly epic voyage to get a book that had both languages. Similar to what happened with the Rosetta Stone." That left Raven thinking about everyone she had met up to now.
The older Raven made preparations for the spell and pulled her younger version attention when she was done.
"What do you need?" The younger asked.
"Help me with the incantation. Just as normal."
Both women stared into one another as the magic began flowing through their selves. Their mantra sounded in unison, and both began levitating. The portal began forming, but the younger faltered. She tried to recover, but couldn't get back into rhythm, and the portal, with their remaining power, collapsed on itself.
"Argh, my powers. I can't channel them correctly. Can't you do this on your own?" She exclaimed frustrated. Her older version dusted and picked herself from the floor. She rested once again in the chair. Raven got to her feet and began pacing back and forth.
"No. I'm mostly depleted after the first try and now this. It is going to take me a while to recharge." She let her head hang and closed her eyes. The pain came back with force.
"Isn't there a spell for energy? Here." Raven asked through gritted teeth while tossing herself the book with the inscriptions.
"Let's try." The elder conceded, but the attempt lasted less than the other one. They weren't in sync even in the incantations. The spell backfired and threw both into the opposing walls of the room.
"Well, that could have gone worse." She got up and walked to get her younger self from the floor. She helped them both sit on the edge of the bed.
Reality began downing into Raven. The pain seemed to let go of them for a moment, but the waves came crashing faster every time. On top of that, the possibility of making her older return to her time quickly evaporated. Was she stuck with her? How much time can they spend like this? Is there a limit to the pain?
"I don't get it. Why did you do this?" The youngster asked the elder irritated with their current situation.
"I was trying to practice. I needed to get someone back." She said with a tinge of sadness.
"Who?" She demanded.
"I can't tell you. All you need to know is that I was willing to get lost for them." She closed her eyes. "I don't know what is going to happen. Hopefully, they come for me quickly, if not, I'm truly sorry." She looked like something finally downed on her.
"Is that all?" Raven spat at her. She could feel herself breathe again and treasured a pain-free breath, but she felt her fury rise. She followed her little comments. Tearing the space-time continuum, the mind-numbing pain, and the apology. It clicked. "Am I going to be my own destruction? Fatidic." Raven moved away from her, trying to compose herself at least somewhat.
"I'm sorry. I never thought I would end up here." She lifted the book off the floor, and flicked through the pages, reading slowly between paragraphs as if she probably didn't know the contents by heart.
"Fine. I'm over it." Raven sat and put on her earphones again, she looked at the floor. Angry music filled her head, but she couldn't form a single coherent thought. Her head was going a mile an hour, trying to come to terms with having her late-night wish conceded. And instead of feeling relief as she once thought, dread filled her. Minutes passed by and the feeling only increased.
At least she was doing this for a loved one. Someone she probably hasn't even met. Treacherous emotions began making their way to her throat.
And by the looks of it, her older self wasn't doing much better.
A/N: Next chapter will be up soon. The story may resolve shortly, as I don't expect it to become a long fanfic. Stay tuned.
